Lake ülemiste, the drinking water reservoir of Estonia’s capital city Tallinn, was biomanipulated by manual removal of cyprinids in 2004–2006 and its impact on water quality in the vegetation period was studied. A total biomass of 156 tonnes corresponding to 160 kg ha−1 of fish, predominantly cyprinids, were removed. A decline in the unit catches of fishing was observed. The removed fish biomass versus phosphorus concentration of the lake was considered sufficient to reduce the impact of cyprinids on water quality. The phosphorus removed within fish biomass corresponded to 38 μg l−1 and 21% of the external phosphorus load of the fishing period. The mean total phosphorus concentration dropped from >50 to ≤36 μg l−1. However, the densities of planktivorous young-of-the-year percids remained high and the role of zooplankton grazing in improving water quality was found non-significant or transient. The cladocerans biomass decreased and the small-sized Daphnia cucullata remained almost the only daphnid in Lake ülemiste during and after the manipulation. Predomination of filamentous cyanobacteria was replaced by a more diverse phytoplankton composition and co-domination of micro- and pico-sized colonial cyanobacteria during summer. Mean phytoplankton biomass decreased from 15 to 6 mg l−1 primarily as a result of decreased in-lake TP availability. The Secchi disc transparency increased only in May 2005–2007. The effects of coincidental events, a decline of external loading of phosphorus and a simultaneous flushing induced by heavy rainfall, on lake water quality are discussed with some implications to the future management of the reservoir.  相似文献

Phytoplankton is widely recognized as being regulated mainly by resources (nutrients and light) and predation by higher trophic levels. In reservoirs, these controls also can be modulated by hydrology, for example through the influence of flow pulses generated by the operation of the dam. In this study, we tested the influence of light, nutrients, and zooplankton grazing pressure, and also hydrology (as water residence time) on the phytoplankton biomass in eight tropical hydroelectric reservoirs, which differ in size, morphometry, location, trophic state, and water residence time. Our hypothesis was that, as these reservoirs are used for hydroelectric purposes, the control that would otherwise be exerted on phytoplankton biomass primarily by resource availability and grazing will also be modulated by hydrology. Low phytoplankton biomass (range of system medians = 12–299 μg C l−1) occurred in most systems, except for one highly eutrophic reservoir (median = 1331 μg C l−1). Our data showed that phosphorus was more often likely to be the limiting nutrient in these systems, as assessed through nutrient limitation indexes (nitrogen and phosphorus), based on concentrations and ratios. For most reservoirs, excluding the eutrophic system with high cyanobacteria biomass, seasonal water residence time was the variable that best explained phytoplankton variation among the several environmental variables analyzed in this study (P < 0.0001; adjusted r 2 = 0.38). Hydrology was an important and additional factor modulating phytoplankton in these tropical reservoirs, directly removing phytoplankton populations and their potential zooplankton grazers by washout, and also affecting nutrient availability.  相似文献

Ciliate and bacterial densities and their link with eutrophication were studied in fourteen shallow lakes in northwest Spain. Total phosphorus (TP) in these lakes varied between 30 μg l−1 and 925 μg l−1 and chlorophyll a concentration (chla) between 0.5 μg l−1 and 107 μg l−1. Bacterial abundance ranged from 1 × 106 to 14 × 106 cells ml−1, while ciliate abundance ranged from 0.6 cells ml−1 to 229 cells ml−1. Lakes were classified into three trophic types from their TP and chla concentrations. Bacterial abundance was significantly correlated with trophic type, as well as with TP and with chla separately, whereas ciliate abundance was only correlated with chla. No significant relationship could be established between bacterial and ciliate abundance across the trophic gradient. A general pattern was observed in the ratios of bacterial abundance to TP and chla concentrations, of decreasing ratios with increases in the nutrient loading. This pattern was not found for ciliates. The dominant zooplankton group in 13 of the 14 lakes studied was Rotifera, which accounted for a mean of 71% of total zooplankton abundance (41% of zooplankton biomass). The positive correlation between bacteria and ciliates with this group, and the absence of any relationship with Cladocera suggest that top down control by cladocerans was weaker in our lakes than previously shown in northern European shallow lakes. Rotifers could be important predators of bacteria in the high-nutrient lakes of our study. Higher slopes of regressions on bacterial abundance towards the hypertrophic range indicate that top-down control was weaker in our lakes than in northern European shallow lakes.  相似文献

The principal environmental factors influencing the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton were examined from September 1997 to July 1998 in three stations along a 26-km stretch of the lowland course of River Adige (northeast Italy). Nutrient concentrations did not appear to be limiting for the phytoplankton growth. Annual minimum concentrations of reactive and total phosphorus, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen were 22 μg P l−1, 63 μg P l−1 and 0.9 mg N l−1, respectively. The most critical forcing factors were physical variables, mainly water discharge and other variables related to hydrology, i.e. suspended solids and turbidity, which acted negatively and synchronously by diluting phytoplankton cells and decreasing light availability. Higher algal biomass was recorded in early spring, in conditions of lower flow velocity and increasing water temperature. In late spring and summer, higher water discharge caused a decrease in phytoplankton biomass. Conversely, low algal biomass in late autumn and winter, during low discharge, was mainly related to low water temperatures and shorter photoperiod. Physical constraints had a significant and measurable effect not only on the development of total biomass, but also on the temporal dynamics of the phytoplankton community. Abiotic and biotic variables showed a comparable temporal development in the three sampling stations. The small number of instances of spatial differences in phytoplankton abundance during the period of lower flow velocity were related to the increasing importance of biological processes and accumulation of phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

The methylthiotriazine herbicide, simetryn, is commonly used in Japan, and its concentration in surface water is often high enough to affect natural phytoplankton. To estimate how the plankton community in eutrophic systems respond to short-term exposure of realistic concentrations of simetryn, we collected plankton from a eutrophic lake and exposed them to low (20 μg l−1) and high (100 μg l−1) concentrations of simetryn for 12 days in microcosm tanks (50 l). High concentrations significantly lowered total phytoplankton biomass, particularly green algal density. Consequently, the species composition was severely modified by simetryn application. However, there was no apparent impact of simetryn on microbial food-web components, bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF), and ciliates. Despite the decreased abundance of algal food, the zooplankton community showed subtle changes with simetryn application. The results indicate that the direct impact of simetryn on planktonic organisms other than phytoplankton, particularly on microbial food-web components, is weak. The indirect impact of simetryn on zooplankton through the change of food quality and quantity was also small. It has been suggested that the persistence of microorganisms, alternative food for zooplankton, probably dilutes the indirect impact of simetryn on zooplankton by compensating for the loss of food phytoplankton. Consequently, the plankton community in eutrophicated systems is resistant to the herbicide at a feasible concentration for a short period of time.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The abundance and composition of entomostracan zooplankton were studied between 1977 and 1984 in relation to abiotic and biotic conditions in Lake le Roux (LLR), a large silt-laden reservoir on the Orange River formed in 1976. The community consisted of Metadiaptomus meridianus, Lovenula excellens (Calanoida), Daphnia gibba, D. barbata, D. longispina and Moina brachiata (Cladocera), and various Cyclopoida. 2. Zooplankton biomass varied seasonally from winter lows below 50 mg m?2 dry wt at temperatures of 9–10°C to summer peaks generally above 1000 mg m?2 at 21–23°C. It correlated strongly and positively with prevailing water temperature and transparency but only weakly with chlorophyll concentration. 3. Mean annual zooplankton biomass, which varied four-fold (97–408 mg m?2) in 7 years, increased with annual mean transparency (23–75 cm Secchi depth) and especially with summer heat content (33–230 degree-days above 20°C) which was itself positively correlated with transparency. 4. Daphnid species showed most annual variation in abundance. Large forms(D. gibba and D. barbata) were scarce or absent in two years of very low transparency and low planktivore abundance. The smaller D. longispina developed once during clearer conditions when more fish were present. Copepod biomass also varied inversely with turbidity, but was not as severely reduced at high turbidities. 5. Smallmouth yellowfish(Barbus aeneus: Cyprinidae) is the principal planktivore and candidate fishery species in LLR. It feeds selectively on Lovenula and large daphnids. Catches and growth rates of yellowfish varied directly with the abundance of zooplankton, particularly large food forms, and with water transparency. High turbidity and associated food limitation seems to reduce standing stocks especially of the daphnid zooplankton more than the effects of fish predation. 6. Spawning of yellowfish depends upon the release of water from an upstream reservoir which concurrently reduces transparency and thus zooplankton availability in LLR. Transparency values above 30–35cm SD appear necessary for the development of sufficient and suitable zooplankton to benefit the fishery.  相似文献

The dynamics of crustacean zooplankton in the littoral and pelagic zones of four forest lakes having variable water qualities (colour range 130–340 mg Pt l−1, Secchi depth 70–160 cm) were studied. The biomass of zooplankton was higher in the littoral zone than in the pelagic zone only in the lake having the highest transparency. In the three other lakes, biomass was significantly higher in the pelagic zone than in the littoral zone. In the two lakes with highest transparency, the littoral biomass of cladocerans significantly followed the development of macrophyte vegetation, and cladoceran biomass reached the maximum value at the time of highest macrophyte coverage. In lakes with lowest transparency, littoral zooplankton biomass developed independently of macrophyte density and decreased when macrophyte beds were densest. The seasonal development of the littoral copepod biomass did not follow the development of macrophytes in any of the lakes. The mean size of cladocerans in the pelagic zone decreased with increasing Secchi depth of the lake, whereas in the littoral zone no such phenomenon was detected. Seasonally, when water transparency increased temporarily in two of the lakes, the mean size of cladocerans in the pelagic zone decreased steeply. For copepods, no relationship between water transparency and body size was observed. The results suggested that in humic lakes the importance of the littoral zone as a refuge decreases with decreasing transparency of the water and that low water transparency protects cladocerans from fish predation. All the observed between-lake differences could not be explained by fish predation, but were probably attributed to the presence of chaoborid larvae with variable densities. Feeding efficiency of chaoborids is not affected by visibility and thus they can obscure the relationship between water quality, fish density, and the structure of crustacean zooplankton assemblages. Rhamnolipid biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas nitroreducens isolated from petroleum-contaminated soil was investigated. The effects of carbon, nitrogen and carbon to nitrogen ratio on biosurfactant production were examined using mineral salts medium as the growth medium. The tenso-active properties (surface activity and critical micelle concentrations of the produced biosurfactant were also evaluated. The best carbon source, nitrogen source were glucose and sodium nitrate giving rhamnolipid yields of 5.28 and 4.38 g l−1, respectively. The maximum rhamnolipid production of 5.46 g l−1 was at C/N (glucose/sodium nitrate) of 22. The rhamnolipid biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water from 72 to ~37 mN/m. It also has critical micelle concentration of ~28 mg l−1. Thus, the results presented in our reports show that the produced rhamnolipid can find wide applications in various bioremediation activities such as enhanced oil recovery and petroleum degradation.  相似文献

Poor water quality affects the biogeochemistry functions and the biological community structure of coastal ecosystems. In this study we investigated the effect of water quality on: (a) The exchange of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) between floodwater and mangrove forests, (b) the abundance of sediment bacteria, (c) the microbial community composition, and (d) the microbial catabolic activity. We selected six mangrove forests that were flooded by creeks with differing water qualities to test for thresholds of nutrient concentrations associated with changes in DOC dynamics and the microbial community. Our results show that in sites flooded by water high in soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) (>20 μg l−1) and NH4 + (>30 μg l−1) the DOC concentrations in the floodwater were higher than in ebb water, suggesting DOC import by the mangroves. In contrast, in sites flooded by water low in SRP (<20 μg l−1) and NH4 + (<30 μg l−1), DOC concentrations in the floodwater were lower than in the ebb water, suggesting DOC export by the mangroves. Bacterial abundance was higher in sediments with low bulk density, high organic carbon and when flooded by water with low N:P (1–2), but the microbial composition and total catabolic activity assessed using Biolog Ecoplates™ did not differ among sites. The relationship between water quality, microbial communities and DOC exchange suggests that, at least during some periods of the year, poor water quality increases bacterial abundance and modifies DOC exchange of mangrove forests with floodwater and thus, their role in supporting near-shore productivity.  相似文献

The study is based on monitoring data on the seasonal variation during four (1996–1999) vegetation periods, as well as long-term summer data on submerged vegetation, nutrients, light, phytoplankton and zooplankton in Lake Krankesjön, a shallow, calcium-rich, moderately eutrophic lake in southern Sweden. The lake has been in the clear water state with abundant submerged vegetation since the end of the 1980s. Somewhat lower summer biomass of submerged macrophytes during 1997 and 1999 indicates a temporary instability of the clear water state. During these 2 years, summer transparency was about 1.2–2.1 m, while concentrations of total phosphorus and chlorophyll (Chl) a were about 26–40 and 8–18 μg l−1, respectively.Summer biomass of submerged macrophytes was higher during 1996 and 1998. In both years, a distinct increase in light availability and decrease in concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll occurred simultaneously with the development of dense Chara vegetation. Summer values for transparency were about 2.0–2.5 m, while concentrations of total phosphorus and Chl a were about 20–32 and 4–11 μg l−1, respectively.Summer biomass of crustacean zooplankton was below 250 μg l−1 during all 4 years. A peak abundance of Cladocera (mainly Bosmina longirostris) during May or June caused only a short-term reduction in chlorophyll concentrations that was more pronounced in 1997 than in 1996.Measured light attenuation during 1999 was closely correlated with light attenuation calculated from the amount of suspended solids, chlorophyll concentrations, and water colour. Detritus contributed most to the total amount of suspended solids, while chlorophyll was the main contributor to light attenuation.A long-term decrease of the ratios between chlorophyll and total phosphorus suggests that phytoplankton in the clear water state is limited by factors other than total phosphorus concentrations. Increased sedimentation rate, carbon limitation, allelopathy and a lower bioavailable fraction of the total amount of phosphorus are possible explanations, while nitrogen limitation and grazing from zooplankton probably are of minor importance.Possible reasons for the “instability” of the clear water state during 1997 and 1999 are discussed. Unusually high water level as well as cold and windy weather during the spring of 1996–1999 may have caused a slow and late growth of the plants and thus a temporary instability. However, a tendency for an increase in total phosphorus concentrations and sediment accumulation along the wind-protected shores during the clear water state indicate the possibility of a long-term destabilization which contradicts the alternative stable states model.  相似文献

Phyto/zooplankton composition, chlorophyll a, and some water quality parameters were investigated in a spring-originated pond in Central Anatolia between February 2001 and January 2002. Water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, Secchi depth, total and calcium hardness, nitrate-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen, ammonia-nitrogen, total phosphorus, and soluble reactive phosphorus levels were analyzed. A total of 49 species belonging to Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Cryptophyceae, and Dinophyceae were identified. The highest phytoplankton abundance was found in August, whereas the lowest was determined in January. Phytoplankton abundance increased from February to August and declined in the following months. The Bacillariophyceae were dominant in the phytoplankton community. A total of 21 species of Rotifera, 2 species of Cladocera, and 1 genus of Copepoda were found. The zooplankton community was dominated by Rotifera. The highest abundance of zooplankton was recorded in July and the lowest value in November. The annual mean concentration of chlorophyll a was measured as 1.90 μg l−1. In spite of these eutrophic levels (mean values of total phosphorus and nitrate-nitrogen: 0.069 mg P l−1 and 0.68 mg N l−1), phytoplankton cannot grow satisfactorily because of the short water retention time (0.6 day−1). The shallowness of the pond together with the low phytoplankton biomass and the high concentrations of nutrients are discussed.  相似文献

We examined the impact of five silver carp biomass levels (0, 8, 16, 20, and 32 g m−3) on plankton communities and water quality of Villerest eutrophic reservoir (France). We realized the experiments using outdoor mesocosms. The presence of silver carp led to changes in zooplankton and phytoplankton assemblages. High fish biomass strongly reduced cladoceran abundance (through predation). Silver carp inefficiently grazed down particles < 20 μm. More importantly, however, the suppression of herbivorous cladocerans resulted in the increase of small size algae which were relieved from grazing and benefit from high nutrient concentrations. In contrast, in mesocosms without fish, the dominance of cladocerans (mainly Daphnia) controlled small size algae and probably also larger size algae (colonial chlorophytes, cyanobacteria). Thus, the Secchi disc transparency increased markedly. Through cascade effects, the modification of grazers communities led to changes in the utilization patterns of the added nutrients by phytoplankton communities. In high fish biomass treatments, nutrients were more efficiently accumulated into particulate fractions compared with no-fish and low-fish biomass treatments that were characterized by higher dissolved nutrients concentrations. Zooplankton was an essential source of food for silver carp. The productivity of zooplankton sustained a moderate silver carp biomass (up to 16 g m−3). In the presence of the highest fish biomass, the productivity of zooplankton was not large enough and silver carps fed on additional phytoplankton. Although mesocosms with high fish biomass were characterized by a slight cyanobacteria development compared with other fish mesocosms, silver carp was not effective in reducing cyanobacteria dominance. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that submerged macrophytes provide a refuge for zooplankton against fish predation, whereas the role of emergent and floating-leaved species, which are often dominant in eutrophic turbid lakes, is far less investigated. Zooplankton density in open water and amongst emergent and floating-leaved vegetation was monitored in a small, eutrophic lake (Frederiksborg Slotssø) in Denmark during July–October 2006. Emergent and floating-leaved macrophytes harboured significantly higher densities of pelagic as well as plant-associated zooplankton species, compared to the open water, even during periods where the predation pressure was presumably high (during the recruitment of 0+ fish fry). Zooplankton abundance in open water and among vegetation exhibited low values in July and peaked in August. Bosmina and Ceriodaphnia dominated the zooplankton community in the littoral vegetated areas (up to 4,400 ind l?1 among Phragmites australis and 11,000 ind l?1 between Polygonum amphibium stands), whereas the dominant species in the pelagic were Daphnia (up to 67 ind l?1) and Cyclops (41 ind l?1). The zooplankton density pattern observed was probably a consequence of concomitant modifications in the predation pressure, refuge availability and concentration of cyanobacteria in the lake. It is suggested that emergent and floating-leaved macrophytes may play an important role in enhancing water clarity due to increased grazing pressure by zooplankton migrating into the plant stands. As a consequence, especially in turbid lakes, the ecological role of these functional types of vegetation, and not merely that of submerged macrophyte species, should be taken into consideration.  相似文献

The southern Barents Sea is considered to be the most productive area in the Arctic Ocean; however, there are no assessments of daily production rates in the coastal waters. During the summer and autumn of 2007, we investigated the variation of mesozooplankton community structure relative to environmental conditions at 12 coastal stations. Copepods dominated the total zooplankton biomass and abundance during both periods. Diversity indices and the total biomass of zooplankton communities differed significantly between the two seasons. Cluster analyses revealed two distinct groups of stations which were associated with Ura Bay and the adjacent open sea, respectively. Daily production rates of the copepod species examined were calculated using three methods based on: (1) a temperature-dependent equation and (2) two multiple regressions that consider temperature, body weight, and chlorophyll a concentration. Significant seasonal differences for daily production rates were found using all three model equations (p?<?0.05): 358?±?188–1,775?±?791 versus 198?±?85–1,584?±?559?μg?dry?mass?m?3?day?1. Results of principal components analyses demonstrated that the abundance and biomass of herbivorous species were related to variation in chlorophyll a concentration while the abundance and biomass of other species (omnivorous copepods and Ctenophora) were related mainly with water temperature and salinity. Mesozooplankton biomass was higher during this study relative to previous studies. Computed copepod production rates were higher compared with other Arctic seas confirming a high productive potential of the coastal southern Barents Sea.  相似文献

The filamentous fungus Gliocladium virens is able to produce fructooligosaccharides (FOS), fructose-containing sugars, used as functional ingredients to improve nutritional and technological properties of foods. In this work we evaluated FOS production by G. virens when grown in a wide range of sucrose concentrations (10–400 g l?1). High sucrose concentrations increased both biomass and FOS production, including 6-kestose, a trisaccharide comprising β (2 → 6) linked fructosyl units, with enhanced stability and prebiotic activity when compared to the typical FOS β (2 → 1) linked. The highest 6-kestose yield (3 g l?1) was achieved in media containing 150 g l?1 sucrose after 4–5 days of culture, production being 90% greater than in media containing 10, 30, or 50 g l?1 sucrose. After 5 days, FOS production declined markedly, following complete sucrose depletion in the medium. Although most of the β-fructofuranosidases preferentially catalyze sucrose hydrolysis, FOS production in G. virens grown in high sucrose concentration, might be attributed to a reverse hydrolysis by these enzymes. In conclusion, high sucrose concentrations increase growth of G. virens whilst 6-kestose accumulation in the medium seems to be controlled both by specific properties of β-fructofuranosidases and on the sucrose concentration.  相似文献

Cultures under nitrogen limitation for Chlorella vulgaris were kept under different light quality (white, blue, yellow and violet) at 70 and 140 µE m?2 s?1; to evaluate the effect on fatty acids profiles and biodiesel quality. The results showed a maximum biomass and cell density at 140 µE m?2 s?1 of: white light (0.69 g L?1 and 6.5?×?106 cells mL?1, respectively) and blue light (0.65 g L?1 and 8.0?×?106 cells mL?1, respectively); compared to violet and yellow light. The chlorophyll concentration (µg mg?1 biomass dry weight) at 70 µE m?2 s?1 were in the order of light: white (25.61)?>?violet (17.10)?>?yellow (11.68)?>?blue (11.40) and, at 140 µE m?2 s?1 were: violet (23.64)?>?white (10.20)?>?yellow (9.66)?>?blue (7.99), suggesting the violet light stimulates the increase of chlorophyll a at higher intensity. The maximum lipid content (% w/w) were present under blue light (43.11), yellow (70.92) and violet (83.87) at 140 µE m?2 s?1. The different wavelengths did not have a negative effect on the quality of the biodiesel, however; violet light presented greater productivity and the indicators such as CFPP were related to the oxidative stability value and low PUFA content, leading biodiesel to good oxidative stability.

Cholera epidemics are thought to be influenced by changes in populations of estuarine Vibrio cholerae. We investigated the abundance and distribution of this bacterium, as ??free-living?? (<20???m fraction) and associated with microphytoplankton (>20???m) or zooplankton (>60???m), in the Karnaphuli estuary of Bangladesh during pre- and post-monsoon seasons. Cultivable Vibrio populations were ~102?C104 colony forming units (CFU) ml?1 in the high saline zone (19?C23 practical salinity unit, PSU) and declined in freshwater (<101?CFU?ml?1). Culture independent detection of toxigenic V. cholerae O1 and O139 serogroups revealed a higher abundance of ??free-living?? (104?C105 cells?l?1) than those attached to plankton (101?C103 cells?l?1). However, ??free-living?? O1 and O139 cells were sometimes absent in the medium saline and freshwater areas (0.0?C11 practical salinity unit [PSU]). In contrast, plankton samples always harbored these serogroups despite changes in salinity and other physico-chemical properties. Microphytoplankton and zooplankton were dominated by diatoms and blue-green algae, and copepods and rotifers, respectively. Toxigenic V. cholerae abundance did not correlate with plankton abundance or species but had a positive correlation with chitin in the <20???m fraction, where suspended particulate matter (SPM), V. cholerae and chitin concentrations were highest. C:N ratios indicated that organic matter in SPM originated predominantly from plankton. The differential occurrence of ??free-living?? and attached V. cholerae suggests a pivotal function of plankton in V. cholerae spreading into freshwater areas. The probable association of this pathogen with organisms and particles in the nanoplankton (<20???m) fraction requires validation of the concept of the ??free living?? state of V. cholerae in aquatic habitats.  相似文献

The algal, protozoan and metazoan communities within different drift-ice types (newly formed, pancake and rafted ice) and in under-ice water were studied in the Gulf of Bothnia in March 2006. In ice, diatoms together with unidentified flagellates dominated the algal biomass (226 ± 154 μg ww l−1) and rotifers the metazoan and protozoan biomass (32 ± 25 μg ww l−1). The under-ice water communities were dominated by flagellates and ciliates, which resulted in lower biomasses (97 ± 25 and 21 ± 14 μg ww l−1, respectively). The under-ice water and newly formed ice separated from all other samples to their own cluster in hierarchical cluster analysis. The most important discriminating factors, according to discriminant analysis, were chlorophyll-a, phosphate and silicate. The under-ice water/newly formed ice cluster was characterized by high nutrient and low chlorophyll-a values, while the opposite held true for the ice cluster. Increasing trends in chlorophyll-a concentration and biomass were observed with increasing ice thickness. Within the thick ice columns (>40 cm), the highest chlorophyll-a concentrations (6.6–22.2 μg l−1) were in the bottom layers indicating photoacclimation of the sympagic community. The ice algal biomass showed additional peaks in the centric diatom-dominated surface layers coinciding with the highest photosynthetic efficiencies [0.019–0.032 μg C (μg Chl-a −1 h−1) (μE m−2 s−1)−1] and maximum photosynthetic capacities [0.43-1.29 μg C (μg Chl-a −1 h−1)]. Rafting and snow-ice formation, determined from thin sections and stable oxygen isotopic composition, strongly influenced the physical, chemical and biological properties of the ice. Snow-ice formation provided the surface layers with nutrients and possibly habitable space, which seemed to have favored centric diatoms in our study.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to describe the biogeochemical characteristics in the waters of Mongolian lakes, particularly those related to parameters limiting phytoplankton growth and the trophic state. Investigations into the distribution of chemical and biological parameters were carried out in the following 18 lakes: Har Us, Har, Hovsgol, Achit, Dalai, Bayan, Tolbo, Holboo, Bust, Sangiyn Dalai, Tunamal, Dorgon, Uureg, Telmen, Hyargas, Uvs, Erkhel and Oygon, all of which showed a wide range of salinity between 0.16 and 24.9 g l−1. Lake water was classified into four types: six fresh (less than 0.5 g l−1 salinity), three subsaline (0.5–3 g l−1), seven hyposaline (3–20 g l−1) and two mesosaline (20–50 g l−1) lakes. Predominant cations and anions in the order of dominance were Ca, Mg > Na > K and HCO3 > SO4, Cl in freshwater lakes, Na > Mg > Ca, K and HCO3, Cl > SO4 in subsaline lakes, and Na > Mg > K, Ca and Cl, SO4 > HCO3 in hyposaline and mesosaline lakes. Nitrogenous and phosphorus nutrients in the waters were low, seemingly caused by the low loads from their watersheds, where the ground was free of vegetation with an extremely low level of human activity. The present investigations revealed some 234 taxa of phytoplankton and 38 of zooplankton. The PC:PN:PP stoichiometric ratio by weight was (22–202):(3–27):1. Phosphorus was assessed as the potential limiting parameter in eight lakes, nitrogen in six and both nutrients in four others. Twelve lakes showed an oligotrophic character, while six were mesotrophic type. The six oligotrophic lakes seemed to be subject to phosphorus limiting phytoplankton growth, four to nitrogen and two to both limitations. In the mesotrophic lakes, on the other hand, phosphorus limitation was verified in two lakes, nitrogen in two others and both in two lakes.  相似文献
