We studied sexual dominance and seasonal differences in aggressiveness of individuals in intraspecific competition for shells of the hermit crab Pagurus filholi in terms of size of contestants and duration of the attempt to deprive other crabs of their shell. Experiments were conducted using paired intrasexual and intersexual contests in the pre-breeding and post-breeding seasons. Size ratios between contestants were systematically varied to assess the sexual difference in size and owner advantages. In both intrasexual and intersexual contests intruder crabs tended to win the contests more often as their size increased, that is, size advantage overcame owner advantage. Although we did not recognize a sexual difference in size and owner advantages in contest outcomes, male intruder crabs took a shorter time to deprive female owners of a shell than to deprive male owners. Furthermore, male individuals in the pre-breeding season had significantly longer fight durations. Fighting is costly. Thus males can afford to expend more energy and time fighting, indicating that males are dominant over females in shell fights as both intruders and owners. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Resource ownership often increases an individual's aggressiveness and its probability of defeating a competitor. Individuals contesting resource owners could therefore incur higher costs, making individuals reluctant to compete with owners. We tested the hypothesis that animals use asymmetry in resource ownership as a cue for contest costs and adjust contest decisions accordingly. Using a mangrove rivulus fish (Kryptolebias marmoratus), we staged (1) contests with a randomly assigned asymmetry in resource ownership (one fish was provided with a shelter) and (2) contests in which neither fish had a shelter. Owners that were in their shelters at the contest start showed a greater tendency to fight and won more contests than their intruder opponents; those outside the shelter at the start did not. Compared with fish in contests with no shelters at stake, shelter owners had a higher tendency to fight whether or not they were in their shelters at the start; intruders, however, had a lower tendency to fight only against owners that were inside the shelter at the start. These results demonstrate (1) that ownership status influences both owners’ and intruders’ contest decisions (and in opposite directions), producing a detectable ownership advantage and (2) that intruders required confirmation of their opponents’ ownership status before retreating without challenging them. Theory predicts that asymmetry between contenders influences their ability to defend resources. More recently, some theoretical approaches have also examined the circumstances that might promote sharing of the disputed resources. We tested these hypotheses in males of the ball roller beetle Canthon cyanellus cyanellus. Males fight for possession of a food ball, which is a vital resource used for nesting. We evaluated the role of food resource ownership, body size and reproductive status on the outcome of contests (win, lose or share) between males that rolled a food ball (owners or finders) either alone or with a female partner, when faced with male intruders (or joiners). Large owners of a food ball had a higher probability of victory than small intruders, and small owners had a high probability of losing when faced with large intruders. The reproductive status of both contenders also influenced their chances of winning: previously mated owners of a food ball had a higher probability of winning than virgin owners. Males of a similar size tended to split the food ball, thereby sharing the resource. Our results suggest that competitors may adjust the intensity of their aggression depending at least on their own resource holding power (RHP), the value of the resource in dispute and perhaps even the RHP of their opponents. Sharing the food ball emerges as a fresh solution between similarly matched contestants.  相似文献

The burrow defense behaviors in a sand-bubbler crab, Scopimera globosa, living on a tidal flat, were experimentally examined. Body size and prior residence influenced the results of struggles for the burrows, and large individuals or the burrow owners won in most cases when the intruders were not significantly larger than the owners. Most large owners defended their burrows by directly fighting their opponents. On the other hand, small owners defended their burrows in three different ways. (1) Owners fought directly against same-sized or smaller intruders. For larger intruders, (2) most owners returned to their burrows when the owner was nearer to the burrow than the intruder (returning behavior), and (3) owners sat motionless when the intruder was nearer to the burrow than the owner (sitting behavior). Success ratios of the three types of burrow defense were 38.2%, 88.5%, and 100%, respectively. It was considered that sitting behavior of the cryptically colored S. globosa has evolved because intruders cannot see motionless owners and consequently cannot detect the owner's burrow. Over a broad range of animal systems, male reproductive successdepends on resource holding potential (RHP) and resource quality.In a field study, we randomly combined males of different sizeswith nests of different sizes to investigate the relative roleof resource holding potential and resource quality in determininga sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus, male's nest tenure. Individuallymarked small and large males were given either small or largeflowerpots for nests in isolation and were exposed to intrudersafter they had built nests. We found that nest tenure was longerfor big males and owners of big nests. In most cases (34 of51) the original nest owner was replaced by a bigger male. Thesereplacements by larger males were probably due to takeoversby stronger intruders. Replacement males were larger at bignests. Our results support resource defense theory, as individualswith higher RHP and more valuable resources defended their nestfor longer. On nine occasions males abandoned their nests. Ownersof these nests were larger than the nest owners that were replaced.Hence, our results may provide an example of a situation inwhich sand goby males are able to judge the reproductive valueof their current situation and act accordingly.  相似文献

Game theory models predict that individuals in contests adjust their strategy appropriately to the current value of the contested resource and the resource holding potential (RHP) of their opponent. In the current investigation, I examined interactively operating, multiple contest asymmetries on dyadic disputes for precopulatory guarding positions in the crab spider Misumenoides formosipes. In contests between equally sized adult males with no previous contest experience, residents had clear advantages in fighting success over intruders. Asymmetries in experience predicted outcome when tested against residency status, and experience operating in concert with residency status predicted resolution when tested against size asymmetries. Data from this investigation suggest that crab spiders learn strategies through experience rather than rely solely on the assessment of their opponent's RHP before determining contest effort.  相似文献

Winter feeding territories were more profitable to owners than intruders. Even when intruders landed on a territory undetected they failed to achieve a profitable feeding rate because they fed in areas recently depleted by the owner. For intruders therefore, ownership was a sign of unprofitability. Intruder scalled ‘chis-ick’, apparently to find out if a territory was occupied. Owners replied ‘chee-wee’ and this was usually sufficient to cause the intruder to retreat. Only owners called ‘chee-wee’. Owners reacted more aggressively to tape-recorded broadcasts of the ‘chee-wee’ call played on their territory than to broadcasts of ‘chis-ick’.  相似文献

Asymmetries in competitive ability can determine the outcome of social interactions in animals and are often expressed through differences in sexual traits. Competitive ability (resource holding potential, RHP), trait expression and ultimately reproductive success may vary with an individual's age or experience. In some species, reproductively mature males delay acquisition of some adult traits and thereby signal their young age. Theory on animal contests predicts that individuals assess the RHP of an opponent relative to their own, such that escalation is more common between evenly matched opponents. Here, we test predictions from this hypothesis that males respond to a territorial intruder based on their RHP relative to the intruder's RHP. We simulated white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) intruding into the territory of a recruit or return. Playback of a song repertoire simulating a young male (recruit) elicited a weaker response from established territory holders (return), but a stronger response from recruits. Playback of a single song type simulating an older male elicited the opposite responses. This indicates that males distinguished between simulated young and old intruders based on song, and responded differently depending on their own experience. Our study highlights the possibility that receiver as well as sender traits should be considered when interpreting animal interactions.  相似文献

The Costs of Confronting Infanticidal Intruders in a Burying Beetle   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Infanticide by unrelated adults is a complex behavior in burying beetles (Nicrophorus spp.) serving multiple functions (resource competition, access to mates, cannibalism). The costs of confronting an infanticidal intruder are likely to vary with context. To assess these costs for a single female parent (Nicrophorus pustulatus), we systematically manipulated the sex of a conspecific intruder and the timing of the intrusion. Male intruders were a greater takeover threat than female intruders, and infanticidal takeovers were more common earlier in the breeding cycle. Even though a male intruder posed a greater threat to the brood, a female intruder was a greater threat to the reproductive success of the resident female. Female intruders that took over a carcass excluded the resident female from the resource. When a male intruder took over a carcass, the resident female was able to recover much of her loss by producing a replacement brood. Even when females successfully defended their broods, they suffered decreased reproductive output relative to control females that never had to confront an intruder (expt 1), but the mechanisms underlying this cost were unclear. To test the hypothesis that defeated female intruders attempt to parasitize late‐stage broods, female intruders whose eggs could be identified by a fat‐soluble dye were introduced to resident females caring for larvae (expt 2). Fifteen of 20 intruders oviposited eggs and the number of eggs were related to intrusion pressure. Because resident females rarely produced eggs while caring for larvae, it is uncertain whether the behavior of the defeated female should be characterized as brood parasitism, a failed takeover attempt, or an attempt to use the remains of the depleted resource. This study provides the most complete picture of the changing costs of confronting an infanticidal threat throughout the vulnerable period of offspring development.  相似文献

Hermit crabs fight for ownership of shells, and shell exchangemay occur after a period of shell rapping, involving the initiatingor attacking crab bringing its shell rapidly and repeatedlyinto contact with the shell of the noninitiator or defender,in a series of bouts. The temporal pattern of rapping containsinformation about the motivation and/or relative resource holdingpotential (RHP) of the initiator and acts as a repeated signalof stamina. Here we investigated the role of the force withwhich the rapping is performed and how this is related to thetemporal pattern of rapping by rubberizing the external surfaceof shells. Initiators that are prevented from rapping withtheir usual level of force persist with the activity for longer over the whole encounter but use fewer raps per bout and areless likely to effect an exchange than those supplied withcontrol shells. The fact that the force of rapping affectsthe likelihood of a crab being victorious suggests that eitherthe force of rapping contains information about motivation orRHP or that force directly affects noninitiators, reducingtheir ability to maintain an adequate grip on their shells.The data suggest that shell rapping is an agonistic signalrather than one that provides information useful to the noninitiator,as has been suggested by the negotiation model of shell exchange.  相似文献

Residency is an important predictor of success in contests with ownership asymmetries. Residency often can interact with a winning experience. However, given that some residents lose a contest even when showing an ownership advantage and that the process leading to loss often determines the loser's subsequent success, prior ownership might also interact with a loss. Here, we staged experimental contests between males of the hermit crab Pagurus minutus with a similar-sized weapon (i.e., cheliped) to examine this possibility. Male–male contests in this species occur between a solitary intruder and an owner guarding a mature female. We evaluated (a) whether resource ownership and female value affect the contest outcome and (b) whether the probability of winning after losing differs depending on the initial role of the loser (i.e., owner or intruder) by using precopulatory guarding pairs of P. minutus collected from the field. In the first fighting trial, we found an ownership advantage and increasing owner success as the body size of his partner increased. Although some owners lost the fight, in contrast to our prediction, the frequency of losing in the second fighting trial did not differ between prior owners and prior intruders. Because losers from the first fighting trial of male–male contests have no female regardless of their initial role, this shared solitary status might be related to the lack of difference in success in the second fighting trial. Moreover, unlike in other animals, resident status might not always assure greater fighting ability in P. minutus males because guarding Pagurus males can avoid male–male contests by climbing up objects in the field. Losers in the first trial, therefore, may have been weaker contestants based on traits other than size, regardless of whether they were owners or intruders.  相似文献

Although aggressive conflicts over hosts occur among femalesin many species of insect parasitoids, few studies have examinedthe mechanisms by which these contests are resolved. In Trissolcusbasalis, a parasitoid of pentatomid bug egg masses, femalesco-exploiting an egg mass (patch) encounter one another repeatedlyand fight for possession of the patch. We investigated the resolutionof pairwise contests by experimentally varying the release timeof females and the size of the patch. Logistic regression showedthat the female arriving first on the patch was more likely towin both the first agonistic encounter and to retain overallpossession of the patch. This advantage to the first femalesuggests a resource-correlated asymmetry in favor of the firstfemale, due to her having invested more offspring in the patch.Although escalations were more common when the asymmetry inarrival times was small, the majority of encounters within all contestswere nevertheless resolved without escalated fighting, withthe resident attacking and the intruder backing down. Thus contestresolution basically followed a "bourgeois" rule. Residentstolerated intruders more frequently when the patch size waslarger and the second female was released later, illustratingthe trade-off faced by residents between defending the patchand continuing to exploit it.  相似文献

European black redstarts, Phoenicurus ochruros, vigorously defend all-purpose territories and exhibit delayed plumage maturation, most subadult males looking exactly female-like in their first breeding season. We tested the hypotheses that such dull subadult male plumages are beneficial in order to reduce aggression of adult males either by deception or by honest signalling of subordinance status, and that, in turn, conspicuous (adult) plumage colorations are able to intimidate contenders because they act as a signal of fighting ability and aggressive motivation. Adult and dull yearling black redstart territory owners were confronted with intruders mimicked by stuffed mounts of either a conspicuous adult or a dull subadult male. Our results do not support the hypotheses tested: dull plumages of young intruders did not reduce aggression from adult territory owners and aggressiveness towards intruders was significantly higher in yearling territory owners as compared with adult owners. Conspicuous intruders did not deter dull territory owners and we found no indications that conspicuous male coloration is a signal of fighting ability or aggressive motivation in this species. Instead, the amount of aggressive response to intruders showed considerable individual variance within age classes regardless of the plumage of the intruder and the status of the owner.  相似文献

Resource holding power (RHP), as expressed by gaining dominance, can be affected by extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Extrinsic factors that increase the RHP include e.g. prior exposure to the contest area. The pay-off asymmetry hypothesis was tested according to which there is an asymmetry in the value the resident's territory has for the resident and intruders, i.e. the resident loses more than intruder opponents when losing the contest over a territory in which it has invested much energy during the exploration of food and shelter resources, during the settlement of conflicts with territorial neighbours, etc. This asymmetry will increase the resident's chance to win the fight over intruders. If the resident-intruder asymmetry is enhanced by presenting resource-rich territories to e.g. fish (structurally diverse or 'rich' aquariums), the hypothesis predicts that the resident's dominance chance (probability to win the fight) will be higher than in structurally 'poor' aquariums. It was found that residents were proportionately more often dominant (fight winners) than intruders in the rich compared to the poor aquariums in all seven tested fish species. This demonstrates that a high territory resource value (aquarium enrichment) significantly facilitates the expression of the resident's dominance advantage (prior residence effect). In contrast to dominance, aggressive behaviour before the dominance settlement did not generally differ between residents and intruders when compared in rich and poor aquariums. This suggests that dominance in itself and aggression prior to dominance settlement are at least partially guided by different motivational systems.  相似文献

Most hermit crabs depend on empty gastropod shells for shelter; competition for appropriate shells is often severe. This study determined whether shells that have been drilled by naticid gastropods are suitable for occupancy by the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus. Differences in the characteristics of empty shells and those occupied by hermit crabs were assessed at two adjacent field sites in Nahant, Massachusetts. Drilling damage was far more frequent in empty gastropod shells than in shells occupied by hermit crabs, suggesting that individuals of P. longicarpus avoid drilled shells. They did not appear to avoid shells with other forms of damage. Laboratory experiments confirmed that these hermit crabs preferentially chose intact shells over drilled shells, even when the intact shells offered were most suitable for crabs half the weight of those tested. Final shell choices were generally made within 1 h. The hermit crabs apparently discriminated between intact and drilled shells based on tactile cues, since crabs kept in the dark showed the same preference for intact shells. The hermit crabs strongly avoided, to nearly the same extent, artificially drilled shells, naturally drilled shells, and shells with holes artificially drilled on the opposite side of the shell from where they would normally be located. Possible selective forces causing P. longicarpus to show such strong behavioral avoidance of drilled shells include increased vulnerability of crabs in drilled shells to osmotic stress, predation, and eviction by conspecifics.  相似文献

The effects of growth hormone (GH) implants on aggression, and ability to win dyadic territorial conflicts were studied in brown trout Salmo trutta parr. Bovine GH or vehicle (C) was given to either the territory owner or the intruder in four treatment combinations: C and C, C and GH, GH and C, GH and GH (owner and intruder). GH‐treated intruders initiated significantly more conflicts compared to control intruders. Furthermore, GH treatment of either the owner or intruder tended to increase aggression of the intruder. This indicates that intruders have more scope for motivational increase, while the motivation of owners is already at a maximum. The GH treatment, however, did not affect the outcome of the conflict. It thus appears that growth enhancement increases intruder aggression without increasing the chance of winning the conflict, which may have implications for the effect of growth‐selected or growth‐enhanced farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar on wild populations.  相似文献

Male-male conflict is common among animals, but questions remain as to when, how and by whom aggression should be initiated. Factors that affect agonistic strategies include residency, the value of the contested resource and the fighting ability of the two contestants. We quantified initiation of aggression in a fish, the desert goby, Chlamydogobius eremius, by exposing nest-holding males to a male intruder. The perceived value of the resource (the nest) was manipulated by exposing half of the residents to sexually receptive females for two days before the trial. Resident male aggression, however, was unaffected by perceived mating opportunities. It was also unaffected by the absolute and relative size of the intruder. Instead resident aggression was negatively related to resident male size. In particular, smaller residents attacked sooner and with greater intensity compared to larger residents. These results suggest that resident desert goby males used set, rather than conditional, strategies for initiating aggression. If intruders are more likely to flee than retaliate, small males may benefit from attacking intruders before these have had an opportunity to assess the resident and/or the resource.  相似文献

Males and females commonly compete for limited resources. When interaction costs are similar for both sexes and there are no sexual differences in resource value estimation, a non‐sex‐biased dominance is expected. Moreover, only non‐sex‐biased assessment of contenders fighting ability (Resource Holding Potential, RHP) should influence contest decisions. To test these predictions, we evaluated non‐breeding agonistic intra‐ and intersexual dyadic interactions in the weakly electric fish, Gymnotus omarorum. During the non‐breeding season, resource value is not expected to depend on individuals’ reproductive status and should thus be equal for males and females. In addition, as G. omarorum presents no sexual differences in body size, interaction costs can be considered symmetric between sexes. We confirmed that body size differences, but not individuals’ gender, is the best predictor of dominance. We correlated RHP asymmetries with contest duration and evidenced that body size but not sex influences assessment in intrasexual and intersexual encounters. All dyads tested engaged in agonistic interactions (N = 33) in which a clear dominant emerged. The analysis of conflict phases evidenced the submissive role of electric displays. Electric organ discharge (EOD) interruptions appear early in the contest as an electric hiding attempt, whereas chirps are post‐resolution signals of subordinate status. Interestingly, the decision of interrupting the EOD was also influenced by RHP asymmetries, whereas chirping activity was influenced by the intensity of the attacks received. Our results confirm that body size is the best RHP proxy in non‐breeding intra‐ and intersexual contests of this monomorphic species and demonstrated a sequential pattern of submissive signalling by means of two different electric displays.  相似文献

In the hermit crabClibanarius signatus, the influence of both shell status and social context on agonistic behavior was examined. The experimental hermits were of the same size and sex, but differed in the status of the inhabited shell, which was either optimal, sub-optimal or damaged. The evidence from this experiment suggests that the agonistic behavior ofC. signatus is influenced to a great extent by asymmetries in the resource value; attacks are mainly performed by crabs which inhabit shells in a relatively poor condition and are mostly directed towards opponents with better-fitting shells. However, this effect differs according to the social context, being more pronounced when the potential gain is greater. Shell fights are decidedly more complex than most animal combats; more work is certainly needed to understand the mechanisms underlying resource assessment and decisions made during hermit crabs' interactions.  相似文献

We investigated in the present study the neuroendocrine correlates in intruder and resident rats of a social confrontation. Adult male Wistar rats (intruders) were introduced into the home cage of a well-trained resident to induce characteristic agonistic interactions including physical attacks prior to separation by a wire mesh. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity and the intrahypothalamic release of arginine vasopressin (AVP) were monitored via chronically implanted jugular venous catheters and microdialysis probes aimed at the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), respectively. Based on the behavioral data collected during the 30-min confrontation, intruders and residents were additionally classified into two different subgroups: intruders which showed almost no freezing behavior (active copers) versus those showing pronounced freezing behavior (passive copers) and residents which were either predominantly aggressive or non-aggressive. The neuroendocrine data show that social confrontation caused a significantly increased secretion of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) into plasma in both intruder subgroups, independently of their coping strategy. In contrast, plasma ACTH in residents was increased in response to social confrontation in non-aggressive animals only, whereas aggressive residents failed to mount an ACTH response. Interestingly, plasma AVP decreased in response to social confrontation in active intruders. As measured in microdialysates, the two groups of residents and passive intruders failed to show significant changes of intra-PVN release of AVP. In contrast, an increased release of this neuropeptide within the PVN could be monitored for active intruders. The data of the present study suggest that the different interpretation of an aversive encounter results in differences in the neuroendocrine response and intrahypothalamic vasopressinergic signaling in intruders versus residents.  相似文献
