There exist few empirical rules for the effects of introduced species, reflecting the context‐dependent nature of biological invasions. A promising approach toward developing generalizations is to explore hypotheses that incorporate characteristics of both the invader and the recipient system. We present the first general test of the hypothesis that an invader's impact is determined by the system's evolutionary experience with similar species. Through a meta‐analysis, we compared the taxonomic distinctiveness of high‐ and low‐impact invaders in several aquatic systems. We find that high‐impact invaders (i.e. those that displace native species) are more likely to belong to genera not already present in the system.  相似文献

Although the number of studies on invasive plants and animals has risen exponentially, little is known about invasive microbes, especially non-pathogenic ones. Microbial invasions by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protists occur worldwide but are much harder to detect than invasions by macroorganisms. Invasive microbes have the potential to significantly alter community structure and ecosystem functioning in diverse terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Consequently, increased attention is needed on non-pathogenic invasive microbes, both free-living and symbiotic, and their impacts on communities and ecosystems. Major unknowns include the characteristics that make microbes invasive and properties of the resident communities and the environment that facilitate invasions. A comparison of microbial invasions with invasions of macroorganisms should provide valuable insights into general principles that apply to invasions across all domains of life and to taxon-specific invasion patterns. Invasive microbes appear to possess traits thought to be common in many invasive macroorganisms: high growth rate and resource utilization efficiency, and superior competitive abilities. Invading microorganisms are often similar to native species, but with enhanced performance traits, and tend to spread in lower diversity communities. Global change can exacerbate microbial invasions; therefore, they will likely increase in the future.  相似文献

With ecosystems increasingly supporting multiple invasive species, interactions among invaders could magnify or ameliorate the undesired consequences for native communities and ecosystems. We evaluated the individual and combined effects of rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) and Chinese mystery snails [Bellamya (=Cipangopaludina) chinensis] on native snail communities (Physa, Helisoma and Lymnaea sp.) and ecosystem attributes (algal chlorophyll a and nutrient concentrations). Both invaders are widespread in the USA and commonly co-occur within northern temperate lakes, underscoring the importance of understanding their singular and joint effects. An outdoor mesocosm experiment revealed that while the two invaders had only weakly negative effects upon one another, both negatively affected the abundance and biomass of native snails, and their combined presence drove one native species to extinction and reduced a second by >95%. Owing to its larger size and thicker shell, adult Bellamya were protected from crayfish attack relative to native species (especially Physa and Lymnaea), suggesting the co-occurrence of these invaders in nature could have elevated consequences for native communities. The per capita impacts of Orconectes (a snail predator) on native snails were substantially greater than those of Bellamya (a snail competitor). Crayfish predation also had a cascading effect by reducing native snail biomass, leading to increased periphyton growth. Bellamya, in contrast, reduced periphyton biomass, likely causing a reduction in growth by native lymnaeid snails. Bellamya also increased water column N:P ratio, possibly because of a low P excretion rate relative to native snail species. Together, these findings highlight the importance of understanding interactions among invasive species, which can have significant community- and ecosystem-level effects.  相似文献

This report presents, results of a feasibility study of use of allelopathic aquatic plants for aquatic weed management. In order to establish a list of potential allelopathic plants, we selected 16 aquatic plants native to the southeastern United States and subjected them to two bioassays — one involving lettuce seedlings and one involving the aquatic plantLemna minor as the target species. The lettuce seedling bioassay was selected because it is a widely used, experimentally simple assay to determine allelopathic activity. However, it uses lettuce, a terrestrial plant, as the target species, and thus may be less appropriate for use with aquatic plants. TheL. minor assay involves an aquatic plant as the target species and so is more appropriate for our goals, but it is experimentally much more complex and time-consuming. The plants selected for study wereBrasenia schreberi, Cabomba caroliniana, Ceratophyllum demersum, Eleocharis acicuiaris, Eleocharis obf usa, Hydrilla verticillata, Juncus repens, Limnobium spongia, Myriophyllum aquaticum, Myriophyllum spicatum, Najas guadalupensis, Nymphaea odorata, Nymphoides cordata, Potamogeton foliosus, Sparganium americanum, and Val/isneria americana.Nymphaea odorata (leaves and petioles) inhibited 78 % of lettuce seedling radicle growth and 98 % ofL. minor frond production. Brasenia schreberi inhibited 82 % of lettuce seedling radicle growth and 68 % of L. minor frond production. These results suggest thatN. odorata andB. schreberi are both highly inhibitory and are therefore candidates for use in aquatic weed management. Results also suggest that the simple lettuce seedling assay is a reasonable first “easy” one to use in an attempt to determine allelopathic potential of aquatic plants.  相似文献

In the work, we evaluate the performance of machine learning approaches for predicting successful eradication of aquatic invasive species (AIS) and assess the extent to which eradication of an invasive species depends on the certain specified ecological features of the target ecosystem and/or features that characterize the planned intervention. We studied the outcomes of 143 planned attempts for eradicating AIS, where each attempt was described by ecological and eradication-strategy-related features of the target ecosystem. We considered several machine learning approaches to determine whether one could produce a classifier that accurately predicts weather an invasive species will be eradicated. To assess each learner’s performance, we examined its tenfold cross-validated prediction accuracy as well as the false positive rate, the F-measure, and the Area Under the ROC Curve. We also used Kaplan–Meier survival analysis to determine which features are relevant to predicting the time required for each eradication program. Across the five typical machine learning approaches, our analysis suggests that learners trained by the decision tree work well, and have the best performance. In particular, by examining the trained decision tree model, we found that if an occupied area was not large and/or containments of AIS dispersal were employed, the eradication of AIS was likely to be successful. We also trained decision tree models over only the ecological features and found that their performances were comparable with that of models trained using all features. As our trained decision tree models are accurate, decision makers can use them to estimate the result of the proposed actions before they commit to which specific strategy should be applied.  相似文献

The problems of controlling exotic species have been acknowledged as serious threats to an indigenous ecosystem as well as to society. In response to these threats, various management programs of exotic species have been proposed for supporting eradication in many regions. Although eradication is regarded as the first-best solution, such attempts have been unsuccessful in reality due to mainly two factors: (1) stock-dependent catchability, and (2) uncertainties. This article demonstrates when to aim at eradication through addressing an optimal adaptive management strategy in the framework of a bio-economic model with the aforementioned factors. The study sets out that the sensitivity of catchability in response to a change in the existing stock determines whether or not aiming at eradication is justified. The results also show that process uncertainty associated with stock growth significantly affects the timing of removal actions for eradication, and an increase in the degree of uncertainty could help achieve eradication in a cost–effective manner if we optimally adapt our removal actions to the uncertainty.  相似文献

The Merck Research Laboratories' Fermentation Pilot Plant was constructed and commissioned in the early 1980's. It is a highly instrumented and automated facility which serves to maximize data collection for a variety of experimental batches. To continue successful and versatile operation as the facility ages, various improvements in equipment, maintenance, instrumentation, cleaning and sterility have been implemented. We examined variation at MHC Class IIB genes in a recently established population of dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) in a coastal urban environment in southern California, USA relative to an ancestral-range population from a nearby species-typical montane environment. The founding population is estimated to have been quite small, but we predicted that variation at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) among the founders would nevertheless be preserved owing to the high functional significance of MHC. Previous studies of MHC in songbirds have had varying degrees of success in isolating loci, as passerines show extensive MHC gene duplication. In order to compare diversity in the two populations, we employed two published approaches to sequencing MHC Class II exon 2: direct sequencing with exon-based primers, and traditional cloning and sequencing with intron-based primers. Results from both methods show that the colonist population has maintained high levels of variation. Our results also indicate varying numbers of alleles across individuals, corroborating evidence for gene duplication in songbird MHC. While future studies in songbirds may need to take a genomic approach to fully understand the structure of MHC in this lineage, our results show that it is possible to use traditional methods to reveal functional variation across populations.  相似文献

Unmethylated cytosine-phosphorothioate-guanine (CpG) containing oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG-ODN) are known to act as adjuvants and powerful activators of the innate immune system. We investigated the therapeutic effect of CpG-ODN on a variety of established mouse tumors including AG104A, IE7 fibrosarcoma, B16 melanoma, and 3LL lung carcinoma. These tumors are only weakly immunogenic and notoriously difficult to treat. Repeated peritumoral injection of CpG-ODN resulted in complete rejection or strong inhibition of tumor growth, whereas systemic application had only partial effects. The CpG-ODN-induced tumor rejection was found to be mediated by both NK and tumor-specific CD8(+) T cells. Comparison of parental tumors and variants rendered more antigenic by transfection with tumor Ags suggested that the efficiency of the CpG-ODN therapy correlated with the antigenicity of the tumors. Peritumoral CpG-ODN treatment was even effective in a situation where the immune system was tolerant for the tumor Ag, as shown by breakage of tolerance and tumor elimination. These results suggest that peritumoral application of CpG-ODN acts locally by inducing NK cells, and also leads to efficient presentation of tumor Ags and stimulation of CD8(+) effector and memory T cells, thus providing a powerful antitumor therapy that can be also applied without knowledge of the tumor Ag.  相似文献

1. The Laurentian Great Lakes are among the most invaded freshwater ecosystems in the world. Historically, the major vector for the introduction of non‐indigenous species (NIS) has been the release of contaminated ballast water via transoceanic ships. Despite regulations implemented in 1993, requiring vessels carrying fresh ballast water to exchange this water with saline ocean water, new reports of invasions have continued. 2. NIS often have a wide environmental tolerance allowing them to adapt to and invade a variety of habitats. It has been hypothesized that NIS with broad salinity tolerance may be able to survive ballast water exchange (BWE) and continue to pose an invasion risk to the Great Lakes. 3. We tested the short‐term salinity tolerance of eight recent invaders to the Great Lakes, specifically three cladocera (Bosmina coregoni, Bythotrephes longimanus, Cercopagis pengoi), two molluscs (Dreissena polymorpha, Dreissena rostriformis bugensis), and one species each of the families Gammaridae, Mysidae and Gobidae (Echinogammarus ischnus, Hemimysis anomala, Neogobius melanostomus) to determine if they could have survived salinities associated with BWE. 4. Overall, short‐term exposure to highly saline water dramatically reduced survival of all species. Two different methods of BWE tested, simultaneous and sequential, were equally effective in reducing survival. Species that survived the longest in highly saline water either possess behavioural characteristics that reduce exposure to adverse environments (valve closure; both Dreissena species) or are reported to have some degree of salinity tolerance in their native region (Echinogammarus). Given that exposure in our trials lasted a maximum of 48 h, and that species in ballast tanks would typically be exposed to saline water for c. 5 days, it appears that BWE is an effective method to reduce the survival of these NIS. These results provide impetus for tightening policy and monitoring of BWE, in particular for ships entering the Great Lakes from freshwater ports.  相似文献

Loss of immunogenic epitopes by tumors has urged the development of vaccines against multiple epitopes. Recombinant DNA technologies have opened the possibility to develop multiepitope vaccines in a relatively rapid and efficient way. We have constructed four naked DNA-based multiepitope vaccines, containing CTL, Th cell, and B cell epitopes of the human papillomavirus type 16. Here we show that gene gun-mediated vaccination with an epitope-based DNA vaccine protects 100% of the vaccinated mice against a lethal tumor challenge. The addition of spacers between the epitopes was crucial for the epitope-induced tumor protection, as the same DNA construct without spacers was significantly less effective and only protected 50% of the mice. When tested for therapeutic potential, only the epitope construct with defined spacers significantly reduced the size of established tumors, but failed to induce tumor regression. Only after targeting the vaccine-encoded protein to the protein degradation pathway by linking it to ubiquitin, the vaccine-induced T cell-mediated eradication of 100% of 7-day established tumors in mice. The finding that defined flanking sequences around epitopes and protein targeting dramatically increased the efficacy of epitope string DNA vaccines against established tumors will be of importance for the further development of multiepitope DNA vaccines toward clinical application.  相似文献

The South American country of Chile has been subjected to relatively few invasions in historic times. In comparison to the ca 610 vertebrate species found in continental Chile, only 24 species (3.9%) have invaded the country. Except for two bird and two or three mammal species that expanded their range and crossed the Andean Ranges from Argentina, the remaining 20 species were all introduced, or aided, by humans. Of the 24 invader species that currently occur in Chile, 11 (46%) were first introduced in central Chile, two (8%) in the northern part of the country, nine (38%) in the southern part, and two (8%) in Juan Fernández Archipelago. For ten (42%) of those species there is no information about their effects on the native flora, vegetation, or fauna. For eight species (33%), the information regarding the effects of the invaders is anecdotal. For six species (25%), there is adequate quantitative documentation available on their effects. Of a total of seven convincingly repo rted cases, two involve positive effects (increase in the prey base for native predators) and five have negative effects, of which three are on native vegetation and the remaining two on native fauna.  相似文献

Preclinical studies demonstrated that certain cytokines are potentially useful for the induction of antitumor immune responses. However, their administration in clinical settings was only marginally useful and evoked serious toxicity. In this study, we demonstrate that the combination of autologous inactivated tumor cells expressing IL-12 and IL-10 induced tumor remission in 50-70% of mice harboring large established colon or mammary tumors and spontaneous lung metastases, with the consequent establishment of an antitumor immune memory. Mice treatment with tumor cells expressing IL-12 was only marginally effective, while expression of IL-10 was not effective at all. Administration of the combined immunotherapy stimulated the recruitment of a strong inflammatory infiltrate that correlated with local, increased expression levels of the chemokines MIP-2, MCP-1, IFN-gamma-inducible protein-10, and TCA-3 and the overexpression of IFN-gamma, but not IL-4. The combined immunotherapy was also therapeutically effective on established lung metastases from both colon and mammary tumors. The antitumor effect of the combined immunotherapy was mainly dependent on CD8+ cells although CD4+ T cells also played a role. The production of IFN-gamma and IL-4 by spleen cells and the development of tumor-specific IgG1 and IgG2a Abs indicate that each cytokine stimulated its own Th pathway and that both arms were actively engaged in the antitumor effect. This study provides the first evidence of a synergistic antitumor effect of IL-12 and IL-10 suggesting that a Th1 and a Th2 cytokine can be effectively combined as a novel rational approach for cancer immunotherapy.  相似文献

An experimentally derived prediction tool is under development which aims to assess potential deactivation of diquat caused by water and deposits on plant leaf surfaces in New Zealand water bodies, where aquatic weeds are targeted for diquat treatment. Optimising the use and success of diquat is important not only in managing public confidence in the use of aquatic herbicides, but also in minimising financial risk from failed treatments. Our approach focuses on characterising lake water quality and plant condition factors in these lakes to identify parameters that might be useful indicators of diquat deactivation potential. Water samples have been collected at 3-month intervals from lakes receiving large scale treatment for weed control. Samples have been analysed for turbidity, suspended solids, chlorophyll a, conductivity and dissolved anions. Samples have also been spiked with 1 mg l−1 diquat to measure loss from adsorption and/or absorption. Shoot samples were also collected from targeted weed species at each sampling site and the amount of organic and inorganic deposits on plants has been measured and then added to a second diquat spiked sample to assess potential additional diquat loss from these deposits. Our results have shown deactivation from deposits on plant surfaces which is highly correlated with turbidity, including inorganic suspended solids and total suspended solids. A plant “dirtiness” scale has been devised to help predict the likely success or risk of diquat failure prior to any decision to proceed with treatment. Deactivation in water was only weakly linked to total suspended solids. Our failure to find significant correlation with the water quality factors measured may reflect the need for more detailed analysis of the particle size and composition of suspended solids and future research will address these issues.  相似文献
