The reproduction of summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus (L.), occurring in the Middle Atlantic Bight was studied from 1974–1979. Males dominated the length interval between 21–35 cm t.l. and were essentially absent in samples >55 cm t.l. Females were more abundant in all length intervals >45 cm t.l. Length at maturity ranged from 24–27 cm t.l. for males and from 30–33 cm t.l. for females which coincided with length at age two. Ovarian egg diamerter frequencies indicated summer flounders are serial spawners and the trend in mean and maximum maturity indexes (% ovary weight of total fish weight) indicated spawning began in September and continued through February in 1975 and probably into March in 1976. Annual condition cycle of males peaked in September and was lowest in April while females' cycle reached a maximum in October which coincided with peak spawning time. Fecundity was related to length, weight and ovary weight for 1974–1977 and the length-fecundity equation F = 0.0007975 L 3.402 was found to be the best predictive relationship. The overall reproductive strategy of summer flounder was discussed and apparently tends to maximize reproductive potential through an extended spawning season, early maturation, high fecundity, serial spawning and extensive spawning migrations.  相似文献

Reproduction in fish of the Weddell Sea   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Reproductive characteristics of 28 fish species were obtained during EPOS leg 3 in the inner Weddell Sea The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of female notothenioid fish was 15–30% at spawning. GSI in males was much less. Length at first spawning was attained from c. 70% of the maximum total length onwards. As in species of the low-Antarctic Zone gonad maturation was obviously a biennial process. More species in the high-Antarctic Zone spawn in summer and winter than in the low-Antarctic Zone where spawning in autumn/winter prevails. Fecundity was positively correlated with fish length and weight among most species. Fecundity exceeds 10,000 eggs only in a few nototheniid species. Egg diameter is commonly 3.5–5.0 mm with icefish having the largest egg sizes. Eggs of most species are probably left unattended, but nest guarding was suspected in the less fecund species. The results are discussed in comparison to reproduction in notothenioid fish inhabiting the low-Antarctic Zone.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Patagonotothen tessellata (Richardson 1845) in the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina was analysed from weekly captures over a 3-year period (1987–1989). The spawning periods and lengths thereof were analysed using GSI curves and monthly percentage distributions of maturation stages. Two gonadal maturation cycles and two spawning periods (winter and summer) within 1 year were defined. Also discussed is whether the same specimens are able to mate successfully in winter and summer, and whether the reproductive effort varies between the seasons. Male parental behaviour and the likely consequences on their energy levels are considered.  相似文献

During their 3–4 first years of life, triploid sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax grew in a similar fashion to diploids in fork length but more slowly than diploids ( P <0·05) in body weight, even when the diploids reached full sexual maturity. However, from 48–53 months of age triploids exhibited non-significantly higher instantaneous growth rates, and thus when fish were 4 years or older, differences in weight with diploids were no longer apparent, suggesting that triploidy could be of benefit in the culture of large (>1 kg) sea bass. The condition factor was reduced in both ploidies during the spawning season which took place in winter when the temperature was low. These observations suggest that any growth advantage in triploids, which were functionally sterile, may be offset by unfavourable environmental conditions. Thus, the potential gain of triploid fish, because they do not direct energy to gonadal growth, could not overcome the effects of low temperature on somatic growth, which coincided with the spawning season. This suggests that the low growth of this species during winter is more a consequence of low temperature than of the energetic cost associated with reproduction. On the other hand, the lower hepatosomatic index in triploid females in contrast to diploid females might be indicative of the lack of gonadal oestradiol-mediated hepatic synthesis of vitellogenin. Also, erythrocyte and haematocrit measurements showed an increased nuclear and cellular volume in triploids, but with similar cell numbers to those of diploids, respectively.  相似文献

The bathymetric distribution of Merluccius merluccius was studied as a function of length, age and maturity of specimens caught by commercial trawl and longline in Different seasons. Males matured first at 28·8 cm (3 years old), and females at 38·0 cm (3·5 years old). Reproductive activity was noted practically throughout the year with its most pronounced spawning peak in the autumn. Most fish <37–40 cm were males and >46 cm were females. Specimens occurred between 50 and 750 m depth, although density was low at >400 m. Adults were found at all depth strata studied. Recruits and juveniles were limited to inshore waters <400 m, most were found between 100 and 200 m. Spring and summer were the preferred seasons for recruitment; although for both seasons there was some interannual variation. Adult distribution also varied, according to the season. Young adults were spread over the entire depth range, with the biggest ones concentrated at the edge of the shelf (150–350 m), especially in autumn and winter. The main spawning peak coincided with this concentration of adults suggesting that spawning occurred in autumn/winter at the edge of the shelf.  相似文献

Fecundity of perch estimated from a regression of egg. number on fish length varied from 6711 for a fish of 14.5 cm to 77978 for a female of 34. 5 cm. Other independent variables related to egg number were age, gonad weight and somatic weight. Mean egg diameter varied from 0.94 to 1.62 mm. Males matured in their second year at a length of 6 cm and above while all females spawned at age four at a length of 15–18 cm. A proportion of females at Davan spawned one year earlier than at Kinord and were also slightly smaller on spawning. Faster growth of Davan fish may have encouraged earlier maturation. Spawning behaviour is described from film material.  相似文献

The movements of pikeperch in a shallow reservoir   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The movements of 12 female (62–74 cm) and eight male pikeperch (55–64 cm) radiotagged in early March 1997 in the shallow and turbid Bygholm Reservoir, peaked during the summer, but all fish were also active during the winter. Females moved more than males and their activity was correlated with water temperature. Rate of movement was correlated positively with body size for both male and female pikeperch. During the breeding season (April–May) males became stationary for 14–47 days. Spawning sites, inferred from movements of males, were at depths of 2·0–2·5 m on hard substrata, mainly gravel in areas with many submerged trees and shrubs. Males tended to use the same spawning site the next year. Diel activity pattern varied seasonally but activity was highest from 1800 to 2400 hours.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of growth, lipid deposition and lipid depletion were studied in anadromous Arctic charr from a north Norwegian population. Samples were collected in late May when fish were migrating between fresh water and the sea, and in mid-July when the fish re-entered fresh water. A sample of maturing fish captured in mid-July was held in captivity until late September to assess lipid mobilization linked to the final stages of maturation. The fish increased substantially in weight during their 40–50-day summer residence in sea water (immatures from c . 300 to 600 g; maturing fish from c . 500 to 800 g), and body lipid stores were increased approximately fivefold. The carcass (head, skeleton and skin) was the major lipid depot, accounting for c . 50% of the total lipid content when the fish re-entered fresh water from the sea. The muscle of the ascending charr contained 35–40% of the body lipids, whereas the gut and liver each held 4–5%. Body lipid decreased 30–40% during the period between the re-entry of the fish to fresh water and spawning; although lipids were depleted from all depots the carcass and muscle were quantitatively the most important. By the time of spawning, the gonads of the females held almost 25% of the body lipid, whereas in the males the gonads accounted for <3% of the total lipids. Females lost c . 80% of their body lipid during spawning and overwintering, and, consequently, the lipid depots were severely depleted by the early spring. By contrast, lipid depletion in the males amounted to 50–55% of total lipid in the same period. These data suggest that the combination of spawning and overwintering in fresh water imposes a greater load on the females than on the males. It may be that the severity of the depletion prevents females from spawning in successive years.  相似文献

Opercular bones of 261 pike from the River Stour and 117 from the River Frome were used for age and back-calculated growth determinations. The annuli were laid down during late April and early May and most growth occurred between May and September. Pike growth in the two rivers was comparable with the fastest growth in other waters, though Frome pike grew slightly faster than Stour pike. Spawning occurred from the end of March into May. Elaboration of the ovaries commenced in September and was virtually completed by February, whereas the testes reached their maximum weight in October and maintained it until spawning. Immature pike had an annual cycle of condition reaching a maximum in May and a minimum during the winter. The gonad cycle affected the condition of mature females which had their minimum condition in mid-summer. The fecundity of Stour pike is expressed by the formula: log10 egg number =3.56 log10 fish length (mm) – 5.40. Approximately 75% of all Stour pike were sexually mature by age II and these fish were, on average, larger than immature pike of the same age. The most numerous items in the diet of pike were small cyprinids, 30–80 mm fork length, although pike over 700 mm long ate larger fish. Few salmonids appeared in the diet of either Frome or Stour pike. The percentage of empty stomachs was highest in Stour samples taken during the summer, shorter digestion times and longer feeding periods in this period are suggested as reasons for the apparent anomaly.  相似文献

The factors influencing the selection of food by flounders, Platichthys flesus (L.), have been investigated by analysing collections made in the Severn Estuary for 1 year and the results of experiments. Flounders measuring between 6–0 and 35 cm fed heavily on the polychaete Nereis diversicolor in February and on the amphipod Gammarus salinus between February and April. Thereafter these species were replaced by the mysid Neomysis integer with the decapod Crangon vulgaris. Flounders shorter than 6.0 cm, fed mainly on Neomysis integer regardless of month. Numerous factors were involved in the choice of the food including (1) the maximum and minimum length of prey, (2) its spatial distribution in the water column, (3) its degree of concealment, (4) its motility and ability to escape predation, (5) conditioning of the flounders for certain foods, (6) the fish's swimming speed and (7) the turbidity and temperature of the water.
Although the average length of ingested prey remained unchanged as the fish grew in size, an increase in the maximum and minimum lengths was observed. The percentage of stomachs that contained no identifiable remains in flounders greater than 6–0 cm averaged 80–95 % during part of the winter and 60% in the summer and between January and March. These changes partly reflected the influence of low water temperature on the metabolic rate and availability of prey. The dry weight of the stomach contents in flounders longer than 6–0 cm was lowest in winter but high values were recorded in the spring. This latter feature was probably because the rate of feeding was greater than that of digestion. During the summer, under more normal feeding conditions, the weight of the stomach contents remained relatively low compared to other fish populations. Flounders shorter than 6–0 cm always contained more food in their stomachs on a unit weight basis than larger individuals, reflecting metabolic rate and hunting efficiency.  相似文献

The food consumption and egg production of 26 adult (13 female and 13 male) Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) were monitored during prespawning, spawning and postspawning periods. Females spawned from late January to mid-April. Feeding activity occurred from December to early January and ceased for females, on average, 36 days (15–54 days) before the onset of spawning. The duration of spawning by females was, on average, 42 days (10–61 days) and feeding was suppressed by both sexes during the first three-quarters of each female's spawning period. Mature females went, on average, 70 days or 19% of the year without eating. An abrupt increase in feeding activity, particularly by females, occurred during the last quarter of spawning or shortly after the release of the last egg batch (on average, feeding started again after 91% of a female's eggs had been released or 82% of egg batches). Females consumed greater quantities of food than males during both winter and postspawning feeding periods. During spawning, females lost, on average, 29% of their body weight and males 14%. Fecundity ranged from 0.75 to 3.97 million eggs per female. The volume of eggs produced by four individual females (range = 1285–5995 ml in four to 11 batches) ranged from 99 to 195% (mean 150%) of a female's postspawning body volume. Six immature cod fed throughout the experimental period and gained, on average, 8% of initial body weight. Laboratory results were supported by stomach fullness index values of Georges Bank cod exhibiting different maturity states.  相似文献

The yellow snapper ( Lutjanus argentiventris ) in the SW Gulf of California is being heavily fished and little information exists on status of this exploited population. From August 2001 to May 2003, 440 specimens in the size range of 10.8–59 cm were collected from four fishing areas: Huizache-Caimanero, Mazatlan, Marmol and Santa María la Reforma in the SW Gulf of California. Specimens were collected from fishermen and obtained by sampling with gill nets, hook and line and spear gun fishing. Gonadal stages, spawning season and length-at-first maturity were estimated for female yellow snapper through histological analyses and relative gonadosomatic (GSI) and hepatosomatic (HSI) indexes. Six gonadal stages were identified and gonadal development was asynchronous. Gonads in advanced stage VI of vitellogenesis occurred during summer and winter together with the highest values of the GSI and HSI, indicating that spawning occurred during these seasons. Mean maturity length was determined to be 32.6 cm total length. The yellow snapper population was being adversely affected considering that the species was exploited throughout the year, including the reproductive seasons, and that organisms as small as 10 cm were found in fishermen's catches and at fish markets. Minimum capture sizes of 33 cm and a closed season during the reproductive periods of summer and winter are suggested as measures to reduce the adverse affects of this exploitation.  相似文献

Abstract. The majority of tagged colonies of Pseudoplexaura porosa in Bermuda were reproductive over 2 months in the summer. They spawned 5–8 d after the full moon, with a peak on the sixth day, similar to colonies in Panama. The months of spawning were August and September in 1998, but July and August in 1999 and 2000. This temporal difference between the months of spawning corresponded to inter-annual variations in seawater temperature profiles. Initial gamete development each year occurred only when the daily mean seawater temperature during the month before spawning exceeded 27°C. There was a significant positive relationship between reproductive effort (gamete volume) of colonies and rising seawater temperature in the month preceding spawning; this was true for both the initial and the second spawning months. The end of the reproductive season each year was triggered by the decline in seawater temperature past the summer maximum. The duration of the reproductive season of conspecifics at the central Caribbean reef of Panama is 2 months longer than in Bermuda. This can be explained by the smaller annual temperature range at the lower latitude and the earlier onset of temperatures favorable for gamete development. Fecundity estimates for members of P. porosa (mean oocyte and spermary densities) in Bermuda were lower than for conspecifics in Panama. The shorter reproductive season in Bermuda, in addition to the lower fecundity of colonies, indicates that reproduction in P. porosa is compromised at this high latitude reef.  相似文献

The feeding habits of the megrim, Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis , from the central Adriatic Sea were investigated with respect to fish size and seasons. Stomach contents of 510 specimens, 9.0–28.9 cm total length (TL), collected by bottom-trawl from 2004 to 2006 were analyzed. The percentage of 97 empty stomachs varied significantly with season (maximum during the winter, 32.1%; minimum during summer, 7.4%). The food composition suggests that the megrim is a carnivorous fish. Prey items identified in the stomachs belong to four major groups: Teleostei, Decapoda, Mysidacea and Cephalopoda. Teleosts were the most important (%IRI = 82.2), especially in fish larger than 14 cm TL. Mysidacea constituted the main prey for fish less than 14 cm TL. At the species level, the teleost Antonogadus megalokynodon (%IRI = 1.5) and decapod Processa canaliculata (%IRI = 0.9) were the most frequent prey. The mean weight of stomach contents increased significantly for fish larger than 14 cm TL, while the mean number of prey items did not differ significantly among size classes. Diet composition showed little seasonal variation; teleosts were the most important prey in all seasons, especially during spring. The lowest intensity of feeding recorded in winter could be related to the lower sea temperature and to the spawning period.  相似文献

Effects of fish size on spawning time in Norwegian spring-spawning herring   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
During October-January in a northern Norwegian fjord system and in February-March at the main western Norway spawning grounds, an index I G of gonad weight of spring-spawning herring Clupea harengus in percentage of expected gonad weight at full maturity for a given total length L T, tended to increase with L T in the range 27–31 cm as the proportion of recruit spawners decreased. Insignificant differences in I G were found between L T groups in the range 32–37 cm (repeat spawners). This is contrary to that suggested in other studies and signifies that generally the stock spawns in only two waves, repeat spawners first and the recruit spawners second. I G also increased with somatic and total condition factor, which signifies that spawning time may be influenced by summer feeding conditions.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the history of commercial exploitation of roundnose grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris in the North Atlantic. Length frequencies of C. rupestris in 1993, from 400 to 1200 m on the slopes of the Rockall trough indicate a reduction since the 1970s in the modal length of fish found at 700–1000 m. Ages ranged from 2 to 50 years for males and 2 to 60 years for females, with most between 10–38 years. Females attained a greater asymptotic pre-anus length ( L =19.5 cm) than males ( L =15.5 cm) and had a greater weight for a given age (male W =761g, female W =1132g). This species may have a protracted spawning period. Using pre-anus lengths, 50% of male fish were mature at 10 cm (ages 8–10) while 50% of female fish were mature at 12 cm (ages 9–11). At the greatest depths sampled the length frequency of fish was bimodal with a hiatus between 9 and 11 cm (ages 8–12). Highest catch rates occurred on the Donegal slope in September at a depth of 800–1000 m.  相似文献

The influence of freshwater inflows and salinity on spawning success of black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri (Sparidae) was investigated over 2 years in a small estuary on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia. The individual spawning seasons experienced quite different freshwater inflows; 2004-2005 was characterized by low flows throughout the season whereas during 2005-2006 there were three relatively large discharge events in the first part of the season. Macroscopic gonad staging of adults was used to define the spawning season and daily increment analysis of otoliths from recently settled recruits was used to backcalculate spawning dates. Gonad staging indicated that adults were in spawning condition over a 3 to 4 month period during spring and summer. The timing and duration of successful spawning, however, differed markedly between years and was linked to the timing of freshwater inflows and salinity conditions, with successful spawning occurring during periods of low freshwater discharge and when salinities in the upper estuary were above c. 15. Growth rates of the recently settled recruits did not differ between years, nor did the timing of spawning within the season influence growth rates. While the latter finding was unexpected, especially given within season temperature variability, these results imply that by the onset of winter earlier spawned fish would be larger than later spawned individuals, potentially conferring advantages for survival and competition for food. Climate change predictions for eastern Tasmania indicate a decrease in river flows in spring and an increase during summer, potentially increasing environmental variability between and within years, with implications for spawning success and subsequent recruitment.  相似文献

Spawning of the Hawaiian coral-reef goby Asterropteryx semipunctata was diurnal, occurring at various times throughout the day. Mean length of eggs deposited in nests was 0·76 mm (range 0·67–0·84); mean egg width was 0·47 mm (range 0·41–0·52). Clutch size varied from 296 to 1552 eggs (mean=886±309), and was independent of standard length, total body weight, and body condition. Mean relative clutch size was 1·59 eggs mg-1 total body weight (range 0·84–2·43). Clutches hatched 4–5 nights after being deposited in a nest. Mean notochord length of newly-hatched larvae was 1·88 mm (range 1·60–2·04). The minimum period of time that elapsed between egg deposition and subsequent growth of a new batch of oocytes to spawning size was 5–6 days, providing a reasonable estimate of minimum spawning interval. Compared with other gobiids, tropical species tend to have shorter incubation periods, smaller eggs and smaller larvae at hatching.  相似文献

Otolith analyses were used to back-calculate young-of-the-year (YOY) yellow perch Perca flavescens hatch-date estimates to interpret broad length distributions observed within a small Great Lake, Lake St. Clair, and a small inland lake, Lake Opinicon, during 1998. For the Great Lake, the earliest observed hatch date occurred 2 weeks after suitable water temperatures and latest hatch dates occurred the same week temperatures were considered too warm for spawning. For the inland lake, the earliest hatch date occurred 4 weeks after suitable water temperatures and the latest hatch dates occurred 2 weeks after the water temperatures were considered too warm for spawning. It is inferred that spawning in each lake had a duration of >9 weeks. This suggests that natural perch populations can protract their spawning season opportunistically under the appropriate environmental cues. During 1998, these cues involved a shortened winter, earlier spring, and slow warming to typical summer temperatures, caused by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Time of YOY hatch determined the absolute opportunity for growth and resulted in a match or mismatch with optimal foraging conditions and contributed to the development of the observed YOY length distributions.  相似文献
