Climate change is producing an increase on extreme weather events around the world such as flooding, drought and extreme ambient temperatures impacting animal production and animal welfare. At present, there is a lack of studies addressing the effects of climatic conditions associated with energy intake in finishing cattle in South American feed yards. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of environmental variables and level of metabolizable energy intake above maintenance requirements (MEI) on performance and carcass quality of steers. In each experiment (winter and summer), steers were fed with 1.85 or 2.72 times of their requirements of metabolizable energy of maintenance. A total of 24 crossbred steers per experiment were used and located in four pens (26.25 m2/head) equipped with a Calan Broadbent Feeding System. Animals were fed with the same diet within each season, varying the amount offered to adjust the MEI treatments. Mud depth, mud scores, tympanic temperature (TT), environmental variables, average daily gain, respiration rates and carcass characteristics plus three thermal comfort indices were collected. Data analysis considered a factorial arrangement (Season and MEI). In addition, a repeated measures analysis was performed for TT and respiration rate. Mean values of ambient temperature, solar radiation and comfort thermal indices were greater in the summer experiment as expected (P<0.005). The mean values of TT were higher in steers fed with higher MEI and also in the summer season. The average daily gain was greater during summer v. winter (1.10±0.11 v. 0.36±0.06) kg/day, also when steers were fed 2.72 v. 1.85 MEI level (0.89±0.12 v. 0.57±0.10) kg/day. In summer, respiration rate increased in 41.2% in the afternoon. In winter, muddy conditions increased with time of feeding, whereas wind speed and rainfall had significant effects on TT and average daily gain. We conclude that MEI and environmental variables have direct effects on the physiology and performance of steers, including TT and average daily gain, particularly during the winter. In addition, carcass characteristics were affected by season but not by the level of MEI. Finally, due to the high variability of data as well as the small number of animals assessed in these experiments, more studies on carcass characteristics under similar conditions are required.  相似文献

Sixty male Friesian calves were weaned from milk at 5 weeks of age. From 3 to 11 weeks of age, the calves were offered a diet of barley, meat meal, urea and 15% oat straw, supplemented with sodium chloride (NaCl) or sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). The sodium (Na) contents of the diets supplemented with NaCl were 0.3, 1.1, 1.9 and 2.8%. The sodium contents of the diets supplemented with NaHCO3 were 1.1 and 1.9%.The performance of the calves fed on the diets containing 0.3, 1.1 and 1.9% Na from NaCl was similar, but the organic matter intake and weight gains of the calves fed on the diet containing 2.8% Na were significantly lower between 5 and 11 weeks of age. The feed intake of the calves fed on the diets containing 1.1 and 1.9% Na from NaHCO3 was 8 and 15% greater than the feed intake of the calves fed on the diet containing 0.3% Na. However, there was no significant difference in the intake of organic matter, the efficiency of feed conversion ratios or the weight gains of the calves. The sodium treatments resulted in no significant differences in the concentration of volatile fatty acids in the rumen. The addition of NaHCO3 to the diets altered in acid—base balance in jugular blood.  相似文献

Vinca (Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don.) is an important medicinal plant species from which antineoplastic alkaloids such as vinblastine are extracted. However, neither abiotic stress nor inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) has been evaluated on the accumulation of vinca alkaloids under controlled conditions. This study evaluated the effects of AMF and/or abiotic stress induced by the application of potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) and/or sodium chloride (NaCl) on plant growth, and on total content of phenolic compounds (TCPC), total antioxidant activity (TAOX), and total content of vinblastine alkaloid in leaves of vinca. TCPC, TAOX, and vinblastine were measured via spectrophotometric methods. After 75 days under greenhouse conditions, either the AMF inoculation without abiotic stress or the application of KHCO3 (2.5 and 7.5 mM) resulted in significantly (P?≤?0.001) enhanced plant growth, TCPC, TAOX, and total content of vinblastine. The application of NaCl significantly diminished plant growth, but did not stimulate the content of vinblastine. The combined application of NaCl and KHCO3 significantly decreased AMF-colonization in roots. The sole inoculation of AMF or the single application of 7.5 mM KHCO3 induced the accumulation of vinblastine in leaves of vinca.  相似文献

In two separate studies, 60 beef heifers (379 kg BW) and 60 beef steers (348 kg BW) were randomly assigned to six treatments in 2×3 factorial arrangements. The treatments were with or without Synovex® implants combined with either a control diet or diets supplemented with 200 ppm Zn from ZnSO4 or zinc methionine (Zn-Met). Near the mid-point of the feeding periods, cattle were vaccinated with a modified live virus and subsequent titers and concentrations of immunoglobulin G (IgG) were measured. Liver and blood samples were obtained 1 week prior to the start of the experiments and at intervals during the experiments. In experiment 1, average daily gains of beef heifers were (P<0.05) affected by the interaction of implant and source of dietary Zn. Compared to control and ZnSO4 treatments, supplementation with Zn-Met increased (P<0.05) the concentration of Zn in serum. Antibody titers and concentrations of IgG in serum were highest (P<0.05) in heifers fed ZnSO4 compared to heifers fed the control or Zn-Met supplemented diets. The Synovex-H® implant reduced the concentrations of Zn and Cu in liver. In experiment 2, Synovex-S® implants improved (P<0.05) weight gains of steers supplemented with 200 ppm dietary Zn from ZnSO4 compared to non-implanted steers. However, the implant had no effect when Zn-Met was the dietary Zn source. The implant increased (P<0.05) concentrations of Zn in liver of steers supplemented with 200 ppm dietary Zn and reduced Zn in liver of steers fed the control diet. Implanted steers had higher (P<0.05) Cu status and IgG concentrations in serum than non-implanted steers. Steers supplemented with either ZnSO4 or Zn-Met had greater (P<0.05) concentrations of Zn in liver and plasma than steers fed the control diet. These results indicate both the level and source of Zn supplementation in diets of feedlot cattle affect their response to growth implants.  相似文献

Research has addressed the issue of type of shade mainly on feedlots and high-producing dairy farms, but more studies are needed on the impact of shade on grazing beef cattle in a low-to-medium plane of nutrition. A 63-day grazing study using 24 British steers (268±4 kg) was undertaken in Uruguay (33°14'S, 54°15'W) to determine the effect of type of artificial shade on tympanic temperature (TT), behaviour and performance during summer. Cattle were allocated to six paddocks with an area of 2.5 ha each (four steers/paddock) continuously grazed. Treatments (two paddocks/treatment) were unshaded (US) and shaded with either 35% (35S) or 80% (80S) blockage of solar radiation. TT was recorded during 12 days placing an automatic device near the tympanic membrane inside the animal’s ear. Animal behaviours were measured by live observations of animals every 15 min from 1100 to 1600 h six times during the experimental period. According to the temperature–humidity index (THI), cattle was in the ‘normal’ category (THI<70, absence of heat stress) during 50% of the time, the rest being exposed to some degree of heat stress including 15% of the time with environmental conditions. Black globe temperature and surface soil temperature decreased as solar protection increased under the shade structure. Steers spent more time under the 80S structure than under the 35S between 1100 and 1600 h (83% and 49% of the time, respectively). Average 24-h TT did not differ among treatments (mean±s.e. 38.79±0.04ºC). Minimum TT was registered at 0700 h for all treatments (37.92±0.08ºC), whereas maximum TT was reached at 1700 h for both control group (39.73±0.18ºC) and 35% shade (39.48±0.12ºC) and at 1900 h for 80% shade (39.57±0.15ºC). Neither the provision nor the type of shade affected animal performance (0.622±0.060 kg/a per day), indicating the ability of cattle to acclimate and/or compensate for eventually short-term severe heat stress events. The results of this experiment suggest that the provision of shade with either 35% or 80% of blockage of solar radiation is recommended for the improvement of cattle well-being (expressed through changes in behaviour) without significantly affecting animal performance and TT. However, the overall results of the 63 days of the study can mask or dilute punctual effects of short heat stress events on cattle. More powerful experimental designs are required to address this issue in temperate regions.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine: (1) the effect of wheat dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) inclusion, and (2) dietary feed enzyme (FE; Econase XT) supplementation in a finishing diet containing wheat DDGS on fatty acid profile of the pars costalis diaphragmatis muscle of beef cattle. A total of 160 crossbred yearling steers with initial BW of 495±38 kg were blocked by BW and randomized into 16 pens (10 head/pen). The pens were randomly assigned to one of the four treatments: (1) control (CON; 10% barley silage and 90% barley grain-based concentrate, dry matter (DM) basis); (2) diet containing 30% wheat DDGS in place of barley grain without FE (WDG); (3) WDG diet supplemented with low FE (WDGL; 1 ml FE/kg DM); and (4) WDG diet supplemented with high FE (2 ml FE/kg DM). The pars costalis diaphragmatis muscle samples were collected from cattle at slaughter at the end of the finishing period (120 days) with a targeted live weight of 650 kg. No differences in organic matter intake, final BW and average daily gain were observed among treatments. However, steers fed WDG had greater (P<0.01) feed conversion ratio than those fed CON, and increasing FE application in wheat DDGS-based diets tended (P<0.10) to linearly decrease feed conversion ratio. In assessing the effects of including WDG diets without FE, concentration of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in muscle tended to be greater (P<0.10) for steers fed WDG than steers fed CON. In addition, inclusion of wheat DDGS into the diet increased (P<0.05) concentration of CLA and vaccenic acid (VA) in muscle and also resulted in a higher (P<0.05) ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFA compared with that from steers fed CON diet. Increasing FE application in wheat DDGS-based diets did not modify the concentrations of individual or total fatty acids. These results suggest that inclusion of wheat DDGS in finishing diets may improve fatty acid profile of beef muscle which could benefit human health.  相似文献

Six steers (3/4 Charolais×1/4 Brahman) (mean body weight 314±27 kg) and six spayed heifers (3/5 Shorthorn×2/5 Red Angus) (mean body weight 478±30 kg) were used to determine the effects of climatic conditions and hormone growth promotants (HGP) on respiration rate (RR; breaths/min), pulse rate (beats/min), rectal temperature (RT; °C), and heat production (HP; kJ). Cattle were exposed to the following climatic conditions prior to implantation with a HGP and then again 12 days after implantation: 2 days of thermoneutral conditions (TNL) [21.9±0.9°C ambient temperature (TA) and 61.7±22.1% relative humidity (RH)] then 2 days of hot conditions [HOT; 29.2±4°C (TA) and 78.3±13.2% (RH)], then TNL for 3 days and then 2 days of cold conditions [COLD; 17.6±0.9°C (TA) and 63.4±1.8% (RH); cattle were wet during this treatment]. The HGP implants used were: estrogenic implant (E), trenbolone acetate implant (TBA), or both (ET). Both prior to and following administration of HGP, RRs were lower (P<0.05) on cold days and greater (P<0.05) on hot days compared to TNL. On hot days, RTs, were 0.62°C higher after compared to before implanting. Across all conditions, RTs were >0.5°C greater (P<0.05) for E cattle than for TBA or ET cattle. On cold days, RTs of steers were >0.8°C higher than for the heifers, while under TNL and HOT, RTs of steers were 0.2–0.35°C higher than those of heifers. Prior to implantation, HP per hour and per unit of metabolic body weight was higher (P<0.05) for cattle exposed to hot conditions, when compared to HP on cold days. After implantation, HP was greater (P<0.05) on hot days than on cold days. Under TNL, ET cattle had the lowest HP and greatest feed intake. On hot days, E cattle had the lowest HP, and the highest RT; therefore, if the potential exists for cattle death from heat episodes, the use of either TBA or ET may be preferred. Under cold conditions HP was similar among implant groups.  相似文献

The objective was to investigate the effect of intake before fasting on concentrations of metabolites and hormones, respiratory quotient (RQ) and fasting heat production (HP) using the washed rumen technique and to compare these values with those from the fed state. Six Holstein steers (360±22 kg) were maintained at 21°C and fed three different energy intakes within a replicated 3×3 Latin square design with 21-day periods. Steers were fed alfalfa cubes to provide 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0×NEm during 19 days of each experimental period. Steers were placed in individual metabolism stalls fitted with indirect calorimetry head-boxes on day 20 of each experimental period (FED steers) and fed their normal meal. On day 21 of each period the reticulorumen was emptied, washed and refilled with ruminal buffer (NaCl=96; NaHCO3=24; KHCO3=30; K2HPO4=2; CaCl2=1.5; MgCl2=1.5 mmol/kg of buffer) aerated with 75% N2 and 25% CO2 before introduction to the rumen (steers were not fed; WASHED steers). Each gas exchange was measured over 24 h. HP for 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0×NEm were 479, 597 and 714 kJ/daykg0.75 (s.e.m. =16), respectively. The plateau RQ was 0.756, 0.824 and 0.860 for the 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0×NEm intakes for the FED steers, respectively. After rumen washing, fasting HP was 331, 359 and 400 kJ/daykg0.75 (s.e.m.=13) for 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0×NEm intakes before fasting, respectively. The RQ for WASHED rumen steers was 0.717, 0.710 and 0.719, respectively. Cortisol and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations in WASHED rumen steers did not exceed threshold levels for severe energy deficit and stress as can be induced from prolonged fasting. This study demonstrates that a fasting state can be emulated using the washed rumen technique, minimizing the time required as opposed to traditional fasting methodologies, without causing a severe energy deficit and stress.  相似文献

The influence of feeds containing varying dietary cation–anion differences (DCADs) with and without supplements of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) on urine pH and excretion of macro minerals was determined in fistulated crossbred steers (mean live weight 315 ± 45 kg). A basal forage diet comprising lucerne hay and wheat chaff was used, to which varying quantities of MgCl2 or K2CO3 were added to achieve four levels of DCAD: −300, 50, 150 or 250 mEq/kg dry matter (DM). Steers were allocated to one of six treatments, one treatment for each diet and a further treatment for both the 50 and 150 mEq/kg DCAD diets, which were supplemented with 25(OH)D at a rate of 3 mg/steer per day. Urine pH from steers offered the diets comprising DCADs of 50, 150 and 250 mEq/kg ranging from 8.3 to 8.8. In treatments not containing 25(OH)D with DCADs of 50 to 250 mEq/kg, there were no significant differences in urine pH or Ca excretion. However, steers offered the diet with a DCAD of −300 mEq/kg DM produced urine with a significantly lower pH (6.5 to 7.5). Daily output of Ca in urine was also significantly higher from steers given this diet. Supplementation with 25(OH)D significantly increased urinary Ca excretion from steers offered diets of DCADs 50 and 150 mEq/kg DM. Estimates of daily urinary Ca excretion, calculated using the ratio of creatinine to Ca in ‘spot’ urine samples, were less variable than those based on total collection (residual mean square of 0.54 and 0.63, respectively).  相似文献

The culture vessels with multiplying shoots of Achras zapota L. on Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) medium containing 8.88 M 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) with or without sucrose were kept under varied CO2 concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 40.0 g m–3 using different concentrations of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3), and potassium carbonate (K2CO3) in small acrylic chambers. Complete absence of carbon source caused death of shoots within 20 d. Under elevated concentrations of CO2 (10.0 and 40.0 g m–3) the shoots grew photoautotrophically on sucrose-free medium. The growth of cultures was better at 40.0 g (CO2) m–3 than on 3.0 % sucrose under ambient air of growth room. However, the best response was obtained at 10.0 g (CO2) m–3 and 3.0 % sucrose where maximum number of shoots, shoot length, fresh and dry mass, total number of leaves and leaf area was observed.  相似文献

Six Angus steers (319 ± 8.5 kg) were assigned to one of two groups (hot or cold exposure) of three steers each, and placed into two environmental chambers initially maintained at 16.5–18.8°C air temperature (T a). Cold chamber T a was lowered to 8.4°C, while T a within the hot chamber was increased to 32.7°C over a 24-h time period. Measurements included respiration rate, and air and body (rectal and skin) temperatures. Skin temperature was measured at shoulder and rump locations, with determination of sweat rate using a calibrated moisture sensor. Rectal temperature did not change in cold or hot chambers. However, respiration rate nearly doubled in the heat (P < 0.05), increasing when T a was above 24°C. Skin temperatures at the two locations were highly correlated (P < 0.05) with each other and with T a. In contrast, sweat rate showed differences at rump and shoulder sites. Sweat rate of the rump exhibited only a small increase with T a. However, sweat rate at the shoulder increased more than four-fold with increasing T a. Increased sweat rate in this region is supported by an earlier report of a higher density of sweat glands in the shoulder compared to rump regions. Sweat rate was correlated with several thermal measurements to determine the best predictor. Fourth-order polynomial expressions of short-term rectal and skin temperature responses to hot and cold exposures produced r values of 0.60, 0.84, and 0.98, respectively. These results suggest that thermal inputs other than just rectal or skin temperature drive the sweat response in cattle.  相似文献

Studies of cytochrome oxidase in isolated mitochondria of Blastocladiella emersonii Cant. and Hyatt show that the enzyme was present in zoospores and throughout the development of ordinary colorless sporangia and of resistant sporangia. The enzyme activity was present in KCl, NaCl, NH4Cl, and KHCO3 induced resistant sporangia, and was shown to be as active or more active than the enzyme found in ordinary colorless sporangia and zoospores. Interfering substances causing difficulties in the measurement of cytochrome oxidase activity were found in whole cell homogenates of KHCO3 grown resistant sporangia, but not in KCl, NaCl, or NH4Cl grown thalli. These substances could be removed by dialysis or by sedimentation of the mitochondria.  相似文献

Bicarbonates are often utilized in the food industry to avoid fermentation and to improve pH, flavor, and texture. In the same manner, bicarbonates have been demonstrated to control postharvest phytopathogens; however, there are no reports describing the effects of these chemical compounds either on soil-borne pathogens such as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum or on antagonist fungi such as Trichoderma species. This study evaluated the antifungal effect of increasing concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 25, and 50 mM) of potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) on the growth of Trichoderma sp. strain R39 and S. sclerotiorum under in vitro systems. Applications of KHCO3 greater than 8 mM significantly inhibited (P < 0.001) the growth of both fungi. Concentrations of KHCO3 lower than 25 mM did not affect the antagonistic effect of Trichoderma on the growth of S. sclerotiorum; however, this fungal interaction was not observed when exposed to 50 mM KHCO3 because of its strong inhibition of fungal growth. In addition, KHCO3 concentrations higher than 8 mM caused significant (P < 0.001) reduction of the sclerotium formation of S. sclerotiorum. Sclerotium germination and de novo sclerotium formation were significantly (P < 0.001) inhibited as the concentrations of KHCO3 increased. Results show the potential benefits of potassium bicarbonate for controlling both growth and development of S. sclerotiorum, although it also exerts negative effects on the Trichoderma strain that is a natural antagonist to S. sclerotiorum.  相似文献

The effects of chronic dietary sodium chloride (NaCl) consumption on renal function and brain dopamine receptors were studied in adult, male normotensive rats. Compared to rats maintained on the normal NaCl (0.33%) diet, animals maintained on the low NaCl (0%) diet for 4 weeks exhibited significant increases in plasma aldosterone, chloride and changes in urinary electrolyte excretion. In contrast, rats maintained on the high NaCl (8%) diet for 4 weeks demonstrated significant increases in urine volume and urinary sodium, chloride and dopamine excretions and water intake. Rats fed the high NaCl diet displayed a 42–59% decrease (p<0.001–0.05) in D1 binding in the nucleus accumbens (NA), olfactory tubercle (OT) and the striatum (STM), without any effects on D2 binding in these brain regions. Rats maintained on the low NaCl diet also demonstrated decreased D1 binding in the ventral (24%, p<0.02) and lateral (29%, p<0.01) STM, but not in the OT, NA, entopeduncular nucleus and substantia nigra. Rats fed low or high NaCl diets exhibited a 35–180% increase (p<0.01–0.05) in D2 binding in several mid-brain areas (e.g. hypothalamus, thalamus and hippocampus) and hindbrain regions (e.g. superior colliculus and nucleus tractus solitarius) without affecting the D1 binding. These data indicate that chronic modification of dietary salt intake profoundly affects the renal handling of sodium/water excretion and leads to selective up- and/or down-regulation of DA receptor subtypes in different areas of the brain. These findings may have relevance to centrally-mediated hypertension, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and other brain disorders involving dopamine and dopamine receptors.  相似文献

Mixed rumen bacteria, isolated by centrifugation from the rumen of steers fed a roughage (R) or concentrate (C) diet, were used to determine if lectins are present on rumen bacteria, based on hemagglutination (HA) and HA inhibition assays in vitro. Rumen bacteria from steers fed either diet agglutinated erythrocytes from cattle, sheep, pigs, and rats, suggested that lectins exist on rumen bacteria. Bacterial HA titers from steers receiving the R diet were much higher (p<0.001) than those from steers fed the C diet, depending on the erythrocyte source used. Centrifugation at 20,000xg for 30 min fractionated the rumen bacteria into upper (U) and lower (L) layers. The HA titers of the U bacterial fractions were significantly higher (p<0.001) than those of the L fractions. A remarkable reduction or complete disappearance of HA titers following treatment of rumen bacteria with protease, trypsin, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or sodium periodate indicates that rumen bacterial lectins are probably glycoproteins. Lectin specificity for saccharides (galactose, lactose, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine, methyl-alpha-D-galactopyranoside and methyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside) and glycoproteins (mucin, fetuin, and thyroglobulin) was found in the RU, RL, and CU bacterial fractions; no specific binding was determined in the CL fractions. The potential role of lectins in mediating the attachment of rumen bacteria to feed particles, rumen epithelia and other microorganisms is discussed.  相似文献

Growth characteristics ofDeleya halophila (CCM 3662T), were determined using a defined medium.Deleya halophila presented its optimal growth at 7.5% (wt/vol) total salts when it was grwon at incubation temperatures of 32° and 42°C; when the temperature was lowered to 22°C, it had optimal growth at 5% (wt/vol) total salts. This bacterium had an absolute requirement for the Na+ cation; it could not be replaced by other cations. NaBr, Na2SO4, or Na2S2O3 could be substituted for NaCl in the growth medium, but, when MgCl2, KCl, LiCl, NaI, NaF, or NaNO3 was substituted for NaCl, the medium did not support growth. Growth rates of the strain were diverse when NaCl was partially replaced by other sodium salts. Finally,D. halophila suffered loss of viability when the culture was diluted into different low NaCl concentrations (0, 0.5%, and 1%, wt/vol) at various incubation temperatures.  相似文献

Feeding dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), a feed high in fat and protein, to lactating beef cows can alter milk production and composition, resulting in improved pre-weaning growth of progeny. This alteration in milk profile may consequently alter the growth and carcass composition of the offspring after weaning. Therefore, Angus×Simmental steers (n=48) whose dams were fed one of two diets supplemented with either DDGS or soybean meal (CON) from calving to mid-lactation were placed in a feedlot to determine the effects of maternal nutrition during lactation on progeny development and carcass composition. Cow–calf pairs were allotted to two treatments at birth based on cow and calf BW, breed and age. Maternal diets were isocaloric (3.97 MJ/kg NEg) and consisted of rye hay supplemented with DDGS at 1% of BW (19.4% CP; 8.76% fat) or rye hay and corn silage supplemented with CON (11.7% CP; 2.06% fat). After conclusion of the treatments at 129 days postpartum, cow–calf pairs were comingled and managed as one group until weaning at 219 days postpartum. Steers were then transitioned to a common diet composed of 60% DDGS, 34% corn silage and 6% vitamin/mineral supplement and were placed indoors in individual pens with slatted floors. An intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was performed 134 days after feedlot entry on 16 steers (CON, n=7; DDGS, n=9) to determine the effect of maternal diet on glucose and insulin sensitivity. Steers were slaughtered at a target BW of 645 kg. Categorical and continuous data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX and MIXED procedures of SAS, respectively. Steers from DDGS dams tended to be heavier on day 85 of feedlot finishing (P=0.09) compared with steers from CON dams. However, there were no differences in final weight, average daily gain, dry matter intake or efficiency (gain:feed, P⩾0.18). Maternal treatments did not affect progeny days on feed (P=0.15), despite a mean difference of 9 days in favor of DDGS. Glucose and insulin concentrations and area under the curve of progeny as measured by IVGTT were not affected by maternal diet (P⩾0.16). Maternal DDGS supplementation decreased marbling score (P=0.04), but did not influence carcass grading percentage or any other carcass characteristic (P⩾0.17).  相似文献

Effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) inclusion on rumen fermentation characteristics and ciliate protozoal population in high concentrate-fed lambs were studied. Twenty-four weaner (90 days old) Malpura lambs divided into four equal groups (G1, G2, G3 and G4) were fed basal (25:75 roughage and concentrate) diet (G1) or basal diet supplemented with 0.75% (G2), 1.50% (G3) and 2.25% (G4) sodium bicarbonate for 90 days. Daily dry matter (DM) intake and digestibility of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), gross energy and plane of nutrition were similar in all the groups while cellulose digestibility was higher in G4 than in G2 and G1. Ruminal pH increased (P<0.05) with increasing levels of dietary sodium bicarbonate. Concentrations of total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), total nitrogen and trichloroacetic acid-precipitable nitrogen (TCA-ppt.-N) were higher while ammonia nitrogen was lower in the rumen fluid of G4 and G3 than in G2 and G1. The number of total protozoa, Isotricha, Dasytricha, large and small spirotrichs were higher (P<0.01) in the rumen of G4 and G3 than in G2 and G1. Total live weight gain and average daily gain were also higher in lambs supplemented with sodium bicarbonate. It is concluded that sodium bicarbonate inclusion at the rate of 1.50% of total ration increased cellulose digestibility, ciliate protozoal number, ruminal pH and total nitrogen concentration resulting in improved growth of lambs maintained on high concentrate diet.  相似文献

Dietary potassium is an important modulator of systemic blood pressure (BP). The purpose of this study was to determine whether dietary potassium is associated with an altered abundance of major renal sodium transporters that may contribute to the modulation of systemic BP. A unilateral nephrectomy (uNx) was performed in male Sprague-Dawley rats, and the rats were fed a normal-salt diet (0.3% NaCl) for 4 wk. Thereafter, the rats were fed a high-salt (HS) diet (3% NaCl) for the entire experimental period. The potassium-repleted (HS+KCl) group was given a mixed solution of 1% KCl as a substitute for drinking water. We examined the changes in the abundance of major renal sodium transporters and the expression of mRNA of With-No-Lysine (WNK) kinases sequentially at 1 and 3 wk. The systolic BP of the HS+KCl group was decreased compared with the HS group (140.3 ± 2.97 vs. 150.9 ± 4.04 mmHg at 1 wk; 180.3 ± 1.76 vs. 207.7 ± 6.21 mmHg at 3 wk). The protein abundances of type 3 Na(+)/H(+) exchanger (NHE3) and Na(+)-Cl(-) cotransporter (NCC) in the HS+KCl group were significantly decreased (53 and 45% of the HS group at 1 wk, respectively; 19 and 8% of HS group at 3 wk). WNK4 mRNA expression was significantly increased in the HS+KCl group (1.4-fold of control at 1 wk and 1.9-fold of control at 3 wk). The downregulation of NHE3 and NCC may contribute to the BP-attenuating effect of dietary potassium associated with increased urinary sodium excretion.  相似文献

High solubility of certain trace minerals (TM) in the rumen can alter nutrient digestibility and fermentation. The objectives of the present studies were to determine the effects of TM source on 1) nutrient digestibility and ruminal fermentation, 2) concentrations of soluble Cu, Zn, and Mn in the rumen following a pulse dose of TM, and 3) Cu, Zn, and Mn binding strength on ruminal digesta using dialysis against a chelating agent in steers fed a diet formulated to meet the requirements of a high producing dairy cow. Twelve Angus steers fitted with ruminal cannulae were adapted to a diet balanced with nutrient concentrations similar to a diet for a high producing lactating dairy cow for 21 d. Steers were then randomly assigned to dietary treatments consisting of 10 mg Cu, 40 mg Mn, and 60 mg Zn/kg DM from either sulfate (STM), hydroxychloride (HTM) or complexed trace minerals (CTM). The experimental design did not include a negative control (no supplemental Cu, Mn, or Zn) because the basal diet did not meet the National Research Council requirement for Cu and Zn. Copper, Mn, and Zn are also generally supplemented to lactating dairy cow diets at concentrations approximating those supplied in the present study. Following a 14-d adaptation period, total fecal output was collected for 5-d. Following the fecal collection period, rumen fluid was collected for Volatile fatty acid (VFA) parameters. On the following day, the same diet was provided for 14 d, without supplemental Cu, Zn, and Mn. This period served as a wash-out period. A pulse dose of 100, 400, and 600 mg of Cu, Zn, Mn, respectively, from either STM, HTM, or CTM, was administered via ruminal cannulae to the steers on day 15. Over a 24-h period ruminal samples were obtained every 2-h. Following centrifugation, the supernatant was analyzed for Cu, Mn, and Zn. Ruminal solid digesta samples from times 0, 12, and 24 h after bolus dosing were exposed to dialysis against Tris-EDTA. Digestibility of NDF and ADF were lesser in STM vs. HTM and vs. CTM supplemented steers. Steers receiving HTM and CTM had greater total VFA concentrations than STM, and molar proportions of individual VFA were not affected by treatment. Ruminal soluble Cu and Zn concentrations were greater post dosing in STM and CTM supplemented steers at 2, 4, and 6 h for Cu and 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 h for Zn when compared to HTM supplemented steers. The release of Cu and Zn from ruminal solid digesta following dialysis against Tris-EDTA at 12 and 24 h postdosing was greater for steers receiving HTM compared to those receiving STM or CTM. Results indicate trace mineral source impacts: 1) how tightly bound Cu and Zn are to ruminal solid digesta; 2) fiber digestion; 3) and ruminal total VFA concentrations.  相似文献
