Summary The contents of 21 trace and major constitutents in the leaves or leaf blades of three species of deciduous trees, sycamore, horse-chestnut and beech, have been studied at regular intervals throughout the season. The various elements can be grouped into three categories: (A) Co, Ni, Fe, V, Ti, Cr, Pb and Al, (B) Mn, B, Si, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Mg, and (C) Cu, Mo, Zn, P, K, and Na. The Group-A elements, including most of those whose essentiality has not been established, together with Fe, show a fall in concentration in the leaf early in the season, probably as a result of dilution due to increase in dry weight as the absolute amount per leaf rises slightly, followed by steady rise until senescence, when a further fall occurs. In Group B, in which Si Sr, and Ba are considered non-essential, there is a continual rise both in concentration and absolute content until late in the season. In Group C, all the elements of which, except possibly Na, are essential, there is generally a gradual fall followed by a period when the content remains relatively constant, although Na and Zn, together with Pb from Group A, show an unexpected increase at senescence.Group-A elements show a decrease in concentration with height, which can only partly be explained by dilution due to increase in dry weight with height, while Group-B and -C elements are relatively constant at all heights. Results are also presented for some petioles and inflorescences. There does not appear to be any systematic transfer from leaf to inflorescence at any stage of growth. The only elements whose contents could be used systematically for diagnostic purposes appear to be those in Group C, during the midseason period of constant concentration.  相似文献

While drying, detached leaves produced ultrasound acoustic emissions (UAE) comparable to emissions from stem and twig wood. Experiments on Ilex aquifolium L. showed that the main source of these signals was cavitation in the veins, to which conduits and fibres probably both contributed. Regions of the leaf blade with abundant mesophyll and only small veins emitted few signals. More signals were counted on the adaxial side of the midrib than on the abaxial one and on the proximal third than on the distal one, in accordance with the anatomical structure. Sound attenuation was pronounced. Eight species were compared with respect to cavitation behaviour, field water relations and pressure–volume curves, and the data showed differences in cumulative number of events and resistance of leaves to cavitation. Data were generally in good agreement with anatomical structure and habitat preferences. The number of signals per conduit counted on cross-sections was in some leaves much higher than unity, which suggests short xylem elements or an acoustic activity of cells other than conduits. There was no correlation between cavitation threshold or cumulative number of signals and the degree of sclerophylly; unexpectedly, there was a correlation between the cumulative number of signals at a water potential of -1.3 MPa and the bulk modulus of elasticity.  相似文献

The composition of leaf carotenoids in the leaves of 25 species of trees were studied during the whole growing season. The presence of 22 carotenoids was determined. In the autumn, the carotenoids found are mainly xantophyll epoxides (mutatochrome, mutatoxanthin, flavoxanthin, luteoxanthin and auroxanthin) and apocarotenals like apo-12′-violaxanthal.  相似文献

Summary The DNA content of nuclei from meristematic root tip cells of five coniferous and one deciduous tree species and, for comparison, ofVicia faba was cytophotometrically determined. The DNA values of diploid nuclei fromGinkgo biloba are approximately a quarter lower than those fromVicia faba. The nuclear DNA values of the other tree species are merely a third to a ninth part of those ofVicia faba. In three tree species, as well as diploid, we have found nuclei of different polyploid level.The reliability of different cytochemical methods, which are used for determination of the nuclear DNA content, is critically analyzed. The DNA values of the investigated tree species are discussed in connection with the evolution of the DNA content in higher plants.Dedicated to Professor Dr. F. 1. Leaves of a number of species were hydrolysed with aqueous sulphuric acid and the resulting mixtures of sugars were fractionated by chromatography on activated charcoal. Paper chromatography of the fractions showed the presence in all the hydrolysates of minor constituents with R(F) values similar to or greater than those of the common hexoses and pentoses. 2. Two of these were identified as 2-O-methylxylose and 2-O-methylfucose. Estimates of the amounts present in whole leaves, and in fractions prepared from them, showed that they were associated with the hemicelluloses. 3. A third constituent was identified, by the formation of its di-isopropylidene derivative, as apiose. It also was associated chiefly with the hemicellulose fraction; none could be found in aqueous extracts from leaves of Tilia vulgaris, nor in aqueous extracts of Zostera marina, in which apiose is a major constituent of the water-insoluble polysaccharide. 4. A further constituent, after further purification by preparative paper chromatography, was tentatively identified, by gas-liquid chromatography of derivatives, as 3-O-methylgalactose, and was probably accompanied by small amounts of 4-O-methylgalactose. 5. These observations confirm the widespread occurrence of 2-O-methylxylose, 2-O-methylfucose and apiose, but 3-O-methylgalactose was hitherto known only in slippery-elm mucilage, and 4-O-methylgalactose in soil polysaccharides. Some experiments on the digestion of leaf hemicellulose fractions by snail crop-juice suggested that the mono-O-methyl sugars might confer resistance to enzymic degradation.  相似文献

Abstract The boundary layer conductance of brass models of leaves exposed in a wind tunnel was determined from their cooling characteristics. Conductances were generally very low, as expected from large leaves. Nusselt numbers were calculated from the rates of heat loss, so that the results could be compared with established theory. There was generally good agreement between observed and calculated values. Leaves with veins displayed an apparent transition from a laminar to a turbulent boundary layer, and so did leaves inclined at an angle from the horizontal. In still air the observed rates of heat loss by natural convection were substantially higher than those calculated.  相似文献

In this study, 56 (14 control and 42 addicts) adult human subjects of both sexes of different periods of heroin dependence were subjected to the measurement of whole blood, serum, and red blood cell levels of some trace elements (zinc, managanese, iron copper, and bromine), as well as some major elements (phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, potassium, and chlorine). This was done by the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique, in which copper and bromine showed a significant rise in whole blood (male) (22 and 32%, respectively), while zinc, iron, manganese, calcium, sulfur phosphorus, potassium, and chlorine showed a significant drop (49, 8, 25, 34, 21, 51, 61 and 72%, respectively) in proportion to the period of heroin intake (6 yr) and in comparison with the control group. No significant sexual variation has been reported.  相似文献

Dormancy release and thermal time to budburst as affected by duration of chilling outdoors, followed by different flushing temperatures and daylengths in a phytotron, were studied in cuttings of several northern tree species. In Betula pubescens, B. pendula and Prunus padus vegetative buds were released from dormancy already in December, in Populus tremula in January, whereas in Alnus incana and A. glutinosa dormancy was not released until February. Thermal time (day degrees >0°C) to budburst decreased non-linearily with increasing duration of chilling (i. e. duration outdoors), and the slope of this relationship differed among species. The estimated effective base temperature for accumulation of thermal time varied from + 1°C in P. tremula to −4°C in P. padus . The use of 0°C as base temperature is recommended. Long days reduced the thermal time to budburst at all flushing temperatures (9, 15 and 21°C) in all the above species and in Corylus avellana , whereas Sorbus aucuparia and Rubus idaeus showed no daylength response. Since the chilling requirement of all species was far exceeded even in a winter with January-March temperatures 6.5°C above normal, it is concluded that under Scandinavian conditions, the main effect of climatic warming would be earlier budburst and, associated with that, a longer growing season and increased risk of spring frost injury.  相似文献

Shoot and leaf growth rate as well as shoot hydraulic conductance per unit leaf area (KSL) were measured on three evergreen (Viburnum tinus L., Prunus laurocerasus L., Laurus nobilis L.) and three deciduous (Corylus avellana L., Juglans regia L., Castanea sativa L.) trees growing under the same environmental conditions. The times required to complete shoot growth (27 days for P. laurocerasus to 51 days for V. tinus) and leaf expansion (24 days for C. sativa to 42 days for C. avellana) were very different among the studied species. These species also differed in KSL that ranged between 1.5 and 3.5 e-4 kg s-1 m-2 MPa-1 in C. avellana and C. sativa, respectively, with intermediate values recorded in the other species. A strong, negative and statistically significant correlation was found to exist between KSL and the time required for complete leaf expansion. This suggests that duration of leaf growth is shortened by the high hydraulic efficiency of the shoot. In contrast, no statistically significant relationship was found to exist between KSL and shoot growth rate. Whether a high leaf growth rate can be interpreted as advantageous to plants or it is only an epiphenomenon of the high efficiency in the vertical water transport is discussed.  相似文献

Leaves of common deciduous trees: Aesculus hippocastanum and Tilia spp. from three parks within the urban area of Belgrade (Serbia) were studied as biomonitors of trace elements (Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) atmospheric pollution. The seasonal trace elements accumulation (September/May) in the leaves, and their temporal trends, were assayed in a multy-year period (2002–2006). Significant seasonal accumulation was evident in samples of A. hippocastanum for: Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Pb, as well as in Tilia spp. leaves, except for Zn. For Cu, no regular seasonal accumulation was observed in leaves of the studied species. Decreasing temporal trend in leaf tissue concentrations were evident for Pb in A. hippocastanum (16.0 μg g?1 in September of 2002 to 4.6 μg g?1 in September of 2006) which is in accordance with the bulk atmospheric deposition measurements. The leaf Cu concentrations were the highest at one of the studied sites, also marked previously with extremely high atmospheric Cu loadings by some other monitoring (bulk deposition, particulate matter, moss) surveys. Decreasing Cu concentrations temporal trend at that site in the leaves of A. hippocastanum was evident through the studied years and also confirmed with the bulk deposition measurements. The Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn leaf tissue concentrations remained at about the same level in the studied species throughout the experiment and no agreement was observed with the bulk deposition data. Comparing the studied biomonitors, the leaves of A. hippocastanum showed significantly higher elements accumulation and more consistency than Tilia spp., so it may be considered as more suitable species for assessment of Pb and Cu atmospheric pollution.  相似文献

Changes in the content of microelements in blood, heart and liver after a single subcutaneous injection of aquatic suspension of highly dispersed powder and copper sulphate in different doses were investigated. Injection of highly dispersed powder and copper sulphate was shown increase phase fluctuations of copper, zinc and iron level in all organs under study. It was demonstrated that irrespective of the form and dose of injection copper does not break interrelation modus between zinc and copper, characteristic of the control and does not change zinc/copper ratio. Bioavailability of highly dispersed copper powder injected in organism at the dose 0.2 mg/kg was found to be somewhat higher than that of sulphate.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the concentrations of macronutrients and the mineral and trace element composition in maternal milk of Japanese women. We collected human milk samples from mothers living throughout Japan from December 1998 to September 1999, and defined as group A the 1197 samples among them that met the following conditions: breast milk of mothers who were under 40 years old, not in the habit of smoking and/or using vitamin supplements, and whose babies showed no symptoms of atopy and whose birth weights were 2.5 kg or more. We then analyzed their contents individually. We also analyzed the amino acid and free amino acid composition of the breast milk of pooled samples from various lactation stages. Large differences were found to exist among the contents of individual human milk samples. The mean contents of each component were as follows: energy, 66.3+/-13.3 kcal/100 mL; solid matter, 12.46+/-1.56 g/100 mL; ash, 0.19+/-0.06 g/100 mL; total nitrogen, 0.19+/-0.04 g/100 mL; lipids, 3.46+/-1.49 g/100 mL; carbohydrates, 7.58+/-0.77 g/100 mL; lactose, 6.44+/-0.49 g/100 mL; pH, 6.5+/-0.3; osmotic pressure, 299+/-14 mOsm/kg.H2O; chloride, 35.9+/-16.2 mg/100 mL; sodium, 13.5+/-8.7 mg/100 mL; magnesium, 2.7+/-0.9 mg/100 mL; phosphorus, 15.0+/-3.8 mg/100 mL; potassium, 47.0+/-12.1 mg/100 mL; calcium, 25.0+/-7.1 mg/100 mL; chromium, 5.9+/-4.7 microg/100 mL; manganese, 1.1+/-2.3 microg/100mL; iron, 119+/-251 microg/100 mL; copper, 35+/-21 microg/100 mL; zinc, 145+/-135 microg/100 mL; and selenium, 1.7+/-0.6 microg/100 mL. The content of each component varied greatly as the duration of lactation increased. In conclusion, it appears to be necessary to evaluate individual differences of human milk in order to perform valid research regarding infant formula.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of the seasonal and physiological variations on the Cu, Zn, Mg, Fe, Se, Ca, K, Na, Cl, and P concentrations and their relationships with the estradiol and progesterone levels in Sakiz-Ivesi sheep. For this purpose 34 healthy Sakiz-Ivesi crossbreed sheep were divided into two groups. The first group (n=22) was mated and the second group (n=12) was not mated. They were raised under pasture conditions and without any dietary supplementation. Their serum samples were collected four times a year at each season and under each physiologic condition. The periods are 1=early pregnancy (October), 2=late pregnancy (January), 3=lactation (April), and 4=dry season (July). The results of this study indicated that (1) Mg concentrations in serum vary with seasonal variations but not physiological variations, (2) Fe and K concentrations in serum vary only with physiological variations, (3) the Cu concentration changes not only pregnancy but also through some other hormonal changes not caused by pregnancy, (4) Ca, P, and Se concentrations could vary with both physiologic and seasonal variations, (5) Zn, Na, and Cl were almost identical for both groups and altered depending on neither season of the year nor the physiologic status, (6) both increased estradiol level and increased progesterone level can raise Cu levels in serum, and (7) increased serum Ca concentrations are related with increased estradiol and decreased P and Mg levels. These observations suggest that seasonal and physiologic variations and sexual cycle have to be taken into consideration for a correct ***DIRECT SUPPORT *** A02Q2015 00006 interpretation of elements status. If sheep are maintained at pasture conditions, the nutritional requirements must be supplemented during certain periods. Apart from the essential trace element iodine, which is the central constituent of thyroid hormones, a second essential trace element, selenium, is required for appropriate thyroid hormone synthesis, activation and metabolism. The human thyroid gland has the highest selenium content per gram of tissue among all organs. Several selenocysteine-containing proteins respectively enzymes are functionally expressed in the thyroid, mainly in thyrocytes themselves: three forms of glutathione peroxidases (cGPx, pGPx, and PH-GPx), the type I 5-deiodinase, thioredoxin reductase and selenoprotein P. The thyroidal expression of type II 5-deiodinase still is controversial. As thyrocytes produce H2O2 continuously throughout life an effective cell defense system against H2O2 and reactive oxygen intermediates derived thereof is essential for maintenance of normal thyroid function and protection of the gland. In experimental animal models long-term and strong selenium deficiency leads to necrosis and fibrosis after high iodide loads. Combined iodide and selenium deficiency such as in central Zaire is thought to cause the myxedematous form of endemic cretinism. Inadequate selenium supply and prediagnostically low serum selenium levels are significantly correlated with the development of thyroid carcinoma and other tumors. Though selenium supply controls expression and translation of selenocysteine-containing proteins no direct correlation is found between selenium tissue content and expression of various thyroidal selenoproteins, indicating that other regulatory factors contribute to or override selenium-dependent expression control, e.g., in thyroid adenoma, carcinoma or autoimmune disease. As both trace elements, iodine and selenium, were washed out from the upper layers of the soil during and after the ice ages in many regions of the world adequate supply with these essential compounds needs to be provided either by a balanced diet or supplementation.  相似文献

The concentrations of 22 major and trace elements in livers from rats aging from 5 to 113 weeks old were determined. The rats investigated were the same rats previously reported with respect to 29 elements in bones (femur) and 26 elements in kidneys. The samples were decomposed with high-purity nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Seven elements (Na, Mg, P, K, Ca, Fe and Zn) were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), and 15 elements (Mn, Co, Cu, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, Pb and Bi) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) for age variations indicated that the concentrations of many elements, such as Mg, P, K, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sr, Mo and Cd, were almost constant across the ages of the rats with the exception of 5 weeks old (p > 0.05). Arsenic, Pb and Bi showed significant increasing trends, while Na and Co showed decreasing trends (p < 0.01). Selenium showed a decreasing trend except at the initial stage of 5–9 weeks old. Calcium, Rb, Sn, Sb, Cs and Ba showed significant age-related variations, but their patterns were not monotonic. The liver clearly contrasts with the kidneys, in which many elements showed significant age-related variations with increasing trends. The concentration ranges of Mg, P, K, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Mo were controlled within 15% across all ages of rats. The homeostasis of the aforementioned elements may be well established in the liver. The toxic elements, such as Cd, Pb and Bi, showed a narrow concentration range among age-matched rats.  相似文献
