3,3′-di-O-Methylellagic acid 4-O-rhamnoside from the roots of Prosopis juliflora

From the roots of Prosopis juliflora a new glycoside, 3,3′-di-O-methylellagic acid 4-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside, and procyanidin have been characterized.     

Alkaloids from the flowers of Erythrina americana

The two alkaloids, α- and β-erythroidine have been identified in 0.034 and 0.11 % yield in flowers of Erythrina americana and could be responsible for the hypnotic activity of flower extracts.     

The amino acid composition of gum exudates from Prosopis species

The amino acid compositions of the proteinaceous components of the gum exudates from Prosopis alba, P. chilensis, P. glandulosa, P. laevigata, P. torreyana and P. velutina, and for a sample of commercial gum mesquite, are presented. In agreement with data published previously for the polysaccharide components of their gums, only minor differences in composition are shown by these species. The amino acid compositions are characterized by very high proportions of hydroxyproline and by high proportions of proline and serine; these three amino acids account for 62.5% of those present in the gum from Prosopis velutina. The amino acid compositions of these Prosopis gums are remarkably similar to that established recently for the gum from Acacia senegal (gum arabic).     

An ellagic acid glycoside from the pods of Prosopis juliflora

From the fresh pods of Prosopis juliflora, a new glycoside has been isolated and characterized as ellagic acid 4-O-α-L-rhamnosylgentiobioside.

From the pods of Prosopis juliflora a new glycoside, ellagic acid 4-O- rutinoside, has been characterized.     

Alkaloids in seeds of four Erythrina species

The alkaloids present in the seeds of four Erythrina species, E. brucei, E. cochleata, E. thollonia and E. caribaea have been screened by GC/MS. A new alkaloid, erythrocarine, has been isolated from E. caribaea and characterized as a methylenedioxy analogue of the known dienoid alkaloids erysoline and erysonine.     

Biosynthesis of a β-(1 → 4)-mannan in fenugreek seedlings

A particulate enzymatic preparation, extracted from fenugreek seedlings (Trigonella foenum-graecum) catalyses the transfer of mannose from guanosine diphosphate-[U-¹⁴C]mannose and its incorporation into an alkali-soluble polysaccharide. Chemical and enzymatic study of this polysaccharide reveals the presence of only one type of osidic linkage, namely β-(1 → 4)-s-mannopyranosyl. The influence of some factors on this biosynthesis was studied, as well as the MW of the polysaccharide and the existence of an endogenous acceptor.     

Alkaloids of Thermopsis Lupinoides

Ammodendrine, together with seven other known lupin alkaloids, was isolated from Thermopsis lupinoides. (+)-Lupanine (+)-17-oxolupanine occurred together with (?)anagyrine, (?)-baptifoline, (?)-cytisine, (?)-N-methylcytisine (?)N-formylcytisine. These alkaloids have the opposite stereochemistry to that of (+)-lupanine and (+)-17-oxolupanine. The distribution of alkaloids in fresh flowers, leaves, stems roots of this plant was also examined.     

Alkaloids of South African samples of Calpurnia aurea subsp. Sylvatica

Two new alkaloids, calpurmenine (12β,13α-dihydroxylupanine) and its 13α-pyrrolylcarboxylic acid ester have been isolated from a South African sample of Calpurnia aurea. The alkaloid 10,13-dihydroxylupanine, earlier found in Cadia purpurea but absent from Ethiopian material of Calpurnia aurea, was also identified.
