High-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) has been successfully applied to the preparative separation of corilagin and ellagic acid in one step from the Chinese medicinal plant Phyllanthus urinaria L. by use of direct and successive injections of a crude methanolic extract. Seed production and patterns of sex allocation were studied in female and hermaphroditic plants in two gynodioecious populations of Geranium sylvaticum (Geraniaceae). Females produced more flower buds and seeds than hermaphrodites in one of the two study populations. The other female traits measured (pistil biomass, seed number per fruit, individual seed mass) did not differ between the gender morphs. The relative seed fitness of hermaphrodites differed between the study populations, with hermaphrodites gaining less of their fitness through female function in the population with a high frequency of females. However, the amount and size of pollen produced by hermaphrodites did not differ between populations. The number of flower buds was positively correlated with seed production in females, whereas in hermaphrodites a positive correlation between number of buds and seed production was found in only one of the two study populations. These results suggest that fitness gain through female function is labile in hermaphrodites of this species, and is probably affected by environmental factors such as the sex ratio of the population.  相似文献

红背山麻杆(Alchornea trewioides )为山麻杆属植物,作为传统的中药被用来减轻疾病和身体不适,但它的药效物质基础尚未完全清楚。为了全面掌握红背山麻杆药效物质基础,采用80%丙酮对其新鲜叶进行提取,并利用 MCI gel CHP 20P、Sephadex LH-20等色谱柱进行分离共得到9个化合物。这些化合物的结构经氢谱与碳谱比较分析鉴定为鞣花酸(1)、3-O-甲基没食子酸(2)、decarboxyellagic acid(3)、1-O-没食子酰基-β-D-葡萄糖(4)、1,6-二-O-没食子酰基-β-D-葡萄糖(5)、柯里拉京(6)、叶下珠鞣质 D(7)、furosonin(8)、老鹳草素(9)。其中化合物2~9均为首次从该属植物中分离得到。  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: For the maintenance of gynodioecy (i.e. the coexistence of female and hermaphroditic plants), females need to compensate for the lack of pollen production through higher seed production or better progeny quality compared to hermaphrodites. In Geranium sylvaticum, females produce more seeds per flower than hermaphrodites. This difference in seed production might be modified by biological interactions with pollinators and herbivores that may favour one sex and thus affect the maintenance of gynodioecy. METHODS: Sexual dimorphism in flower size and flowering phenology, and in attractiveness to pollinators, pre-dispersal seed predators and floral herbivores were examined in natural populations of G. sylvaticum. KEY RESULTS: Pollinators preferred hermaphrodites 25 % more often than females in two of the three study populations, and floral herbivores attacked hermaphrodites 15 % more often than females in two of the six study populations. These preferences might be explained by the larger flower size of hermaphrodites. In contrast, seed predators did not prefer either sex. CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that pollinator preference does not benefit females, whereas the higher floral herbivory of hermaphrodites might enhance the maintenance of females in G. sylvaticum. Thus, although the data support the view that ecological factors may contribute to the maintenance of gynodioecy, they also suggest that these contributions may vary across populations and that they may function in opposite directions.  相似文献

A new natural product, 3,4,8,9,10-pentahydroxy-dibenzo-[b,d]pyran-6-one was isolated from the flowers of Tamarix nilotica which also contains the known compound ellagic acid, 2,3,7,8-tetrahydroxy [1]benzopyrano[5,4,3-cde][1]benzopyran-5,10-dione. The structure of the new compound was determined by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The 13C MNR spectrum of ellagic acid was recorded and assigned.  相似文献

Potato virus X (PVX) is modified by incubation with chlorogenic acid and polyphenoloxidase. The product made at pH 7 (PVX-Q1) is grey in colour, retains about 2/3 of its initial infectivity, and contains, on average, 1 molecule of bound chlorogenic acid per protein subunit. The product made at pH 7.8 (PVX-Q2) is blue, retains at least 13 of its infectivity, and contains approximately 2 molecules of chlorogenic acid per subunit. Both preparations contain a proportion (18–42%) of cross linked subunits. Brief exposure to trypsin converts subunits of both types of PVX-Q to a form with a slightly lower MW; the reaction goes more extensively with PVX-Q1 (80% converted) than with PVX-Q2 (45% converted). Prolonged exposure to trypsin degrades both forms of PVX-Q to free quinic acid and peptides, apparently only one of which contains chlorogenic acid. It is argued that, in PVX-Q1, predominantly one specific lysine ε-NH2 has been modified with chlorogenoquinone. The structure of PVX-Q2 is less clear.  相似文献

Guided by anti-degranulation assays, we isolated from leaves of Camellia japonica an ellagic acid glucoside named okicamelliaside. The structure was elucidated as 3,4-dioxoloellagic acid 4′-O-β-D-glucopyranoside by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Okicamelliaside was 12,000 times more potent than the antihistaminic drug, ketotifen fumarate, in inhibiting the degranulation of RBL-2H3 cells.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Geranium thunbergii is a traditional East Asian medicine for stomach diseases including dysentery and stomach ulcers in East Asia and has been reported to possess biological activity. The benefits of G. thunbergii in gastric cancer are unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that G. thunbergii extract suppresses proliferation and induces death and G1/S cell cycle arrest of gastric cancer cells. Proliferation was significantly inhibited in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Cell cycle arrest was associated with significant decreases in CDK4/cyclinD1 complex and CDK2/cyclinE complex genes expression. In addition, the protein expression of caspase-3 was decreased and that of activated poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) was increased, which indicated apoptosis. The expressions of the Bax and Bcl-2, which are apoptosis related proteins, were upregulated and down-regulated, respectively. The results indicate that G. thunbergii extract can inhibit proliferation and induce both G/S cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of gastric cancer cells. Also, the induction of apoptosis involved the intrinsic pathways of the cells. Take the results, we suggest that G. thunbergii extract has anti-gastric cancer activity and may be a potential therapeutic candidate for gastric cancer.  相似文献

Both ellagic and gallic acids non competitively inhibited guaiacol oxidation by turnip peroxidase. The Ki values were 3 and 26 μm for ellagic and gallic acid respectively. Enzymatic oxidation of gallic acid by the isolated major turnip peroxidase was characterized with respect to spectral behaviour, affinity constant and pH effect. The Km for H2O2 and gallic acid are 2.5 and 8.0 mM for turnip peroxidase. The pH optimum for gallic acid oxidation is about 6.5 and the rate constant k4 decreased with the increase of pH in presence of both guaiacol and Gallic acid. When the gallic acid oxidation products were subjected to chromatographic analysis, it was found to be converted mainly to ellagic and an unknown quinone.  相似文献

We evaluated the neurotrophic activity of dietary polyphenols by using primary cultures of fetal rat hippocampal neurons in a serum-free medium. Among the tested compounds, chlorogenic acid and its metabolite, m-coumaric acid, together with catechins and flavanone, were found to promote neuronal differentiation comparable to the phytochemical, honokiol, which has been reported to show potent neurotrophic activity. The present findings may contribute to the development of further neurotrophic studies on dietary polyphenols and their metabolites.  相似文献

l-Ascorbic acid-[UL-14C] has been used to follow the appearance of 14C-labeled oxalic acid and tartaric acid as metabolic products of oxidative cleavage of ascorbic acid in geranium apices (Pelargonium crispum). The enantiomeric specificity of ascorbic acid metabolism was established in geranium by comparing the incorporation of d- and l-ascorbic acid-[6-14C] in the presence of l-ascorbic acid-[4-3H]. l-Ascorbic acid-[4-3H] has been used to demonstrate the retention of 3H during biosynthesis of l-(+)-tartaric acid in the geranium and its exchange with water during biosynthesis of l-( +)-tartaric acid in the grape.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Physical dormancy in seeds of species of Geraniaceae is caused by a water-impermeable palisade layer in the outer integument of the seed coat and a closed chalaza. The chalazal cleft has been reported to be the water gap (i.e. location of initial water entry) in innately permeable seeds of Geraniaceae. The primary aim of this study was to re-evaluate the location of the water gap and to characterize its morphology and anatomy in physically dormant seeds of Geraniaceae, with particular reference to G. carolinianum.

Methods

Length, width, mass, anatomy and germination of two seed types (light brown and dark brown) of G. carolinianum were compared. Location, anatomy and morphology of the water gap were characterized using free-hand and microtome tissue sectioning, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dye tracking, blocking and seed-burial experiments.

Key Results

Treatment with dry heat caused a colour change in the palisade cells adjacent to the micropyle. When placed in water, the ‘hinged valve’ (blister) erupted at the site of the colour change, exposing the water gap. The morphology and anatomy in the water-gap region differs from those of the rest of the seed coat. The morphology of the seed coat of the water-gap region is similar in G. carolinianum, G. columbinum, G. molle and G. pusillum and differs from that of the closely related species Erodium cicutarium.

Conclusions

Dislodgment of swollen ‘hinged valve’ palisade cells adjacent to the micropyle caused the water gap to open in physically dormant seeds of G. carolinianum, and it was clear that initial water uptake takes place through this gap and not via the chalazal opening as previously reported. This water gap (‘hinged valve gap’) differs from water gaps previously described for other families in morphology, anatomy and location in the seed coat.  相似文献
