Ovoviviparity or viviparity has evolved independently in animals and involves adaptations in females to accommodate developing embryos for a prolonged duration in their bodies, a condition which has likely to have influenced the evolution of the male genitalia. We aimed to ascertain whether the elongated male genitalia of the ovoviviparous free‐living earwig species Marava arachidis (Dermaptera: Spongiphoridae) delivers sperm directly to the female ovaries where fertilization occurs. Males mated coercively with females by grabbing the female antenna with their mouth parts. Although females resisted the mating attempts, pairs mated 3.3 times on average over 15 h. The elongated intromittent organ, known as a virga, was inserted into the long‐tubed spermatheca during insemination. Surgical ectomy of the spermatheca confirmed that sperm migrated from here to the ovaries with a variable delay. A pair of sclerites in the male genitalia frequently inflicted wounds near the spermathecal opening, while the single, thin virga sometimes broke off during mating. However, unlike earwigs bearing a ‘spare’ virga, damage was restricted to the tip of the virga, without which the males could still inseminate the females. We discuss the evolution of the genitalia in this insect in the light of sexual selection and sexual conflict over mating and fertilization.  相似文献

Very unusual genitalia of the species Zorotypus caudelli are described. It contains the unique configuration of two different intromittent organs, one of them strongly elongated. Hyper elongated genitalia are known in different groups of insects. Males have to accommodate these unwieldy structures in the limited spaces of the abdomen and manipulate them acutely during copulation. A crucial question is how do species with elongated genitalia cope with these requirements? To investigate this, we studied key features enabling storage, insertion, and withdrawal of the elongated genitalia. The co‐existence of an elongated narrow tube and a bulky spermatophore is a highly unusual and apparently paradoxical condition. However, we demonstrate that the tube is not involved in sperm transmission, whereas the large spermatophore is transferred to females by a membranous fold of the genitalia. The movement of the spermatophore is caused by haemolymph pressure, which likely also promotes the insertion of both intromittent organs. A comparison with the genital anatomy and reproductive mode in related groups suggests that the elongated tube and its accommodating pouch is a de novo structure, and that the ancestral sperm transport via spermatophore is a preadaptive condition for the acquisition of this unusual structure. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 112 , 40–54.  相似文献

Chondrichthyes possess an evolved type of spermatozoa. Their flagellar apparatus is characterized by the presence of flagellar roots which form the axis of the midpiece, and the existence of one or two lateral elements associated with the axoneme. Osteichthyes, mainly teleosteans, show a great diversity of spermatic forms. The primitive spermatozoon with a 9 + 2 pattern flagellum is common. The primitive spermatozoon has evolved along different lines. The spermatic diversity which results from this is mainly evident in the structure of the flagellar apparatus. In the animal kingdom the primitive spermatozoon with a 9 + 2 pattern flagellum, present in primitive metazoa, is retained in phyla where external fertilization is maintained. The main evolutionary tendencies--elongation, aflagellarity or biflagellarity--are generally connected with the acquisition of internal fertilization. These evolutionary tendencies are found in teleosteans. It is not possible to link aflagellarity or biflagellarity of the gamete in certain fishes to this method of fertilization. Only the elongation of the spermatozoon is connected, in certain cases, with internal fertilization, but this cannot be taken as general.  相似文献

. Two strains of the Leishmania braziliensis complex have been adapted to grow extracellularly at elevated temperature as amastigote-like forms in a cell-free medium. These parasites can be serially cultivated and maintained at 32°C for L. panamensis (WR442; L. braziliensis panamensis ) and at 28°C for L. braziliensis (M5052; L. braziliensis braziliensis ). Several observations are presented that the forms adapted at elevated temperature are amastigote-like. Morphologically, the amastigote-like organisms appear rounded to ovoid and are immotile and smaller than promastigotes; the flagellum of the amastigote-like forms does not extend beyond the flagellar pocket. In comparison, the promastigotes are very elongated, with a nucleus at mid-cell length and a very long flagellum. By electron microscopy, the short flagellum of the amastigote-like form is within a distended flagellar pocket; the 9 + 2 axonemal configuration is present but the paraxial rod is not observed. By contrast, the flagellum of the promastigote has a paraxial rod which extends from the axosome level. In addition, these amastigote-like forms of Leishmania are able to infect, to survive and to divide within the macrophage cell line J774.  相似文献

This work comprises the first comparative study of the morphology and cytology of the sperm transmission organs in males of 14 species of viviparous clinid fishes (Clinidae, Blennioidei, Teleostei). The form and dimensions of these organs differ among the various species studied. The organs are composed of intra-abdominal ampullae, into which the sperm ducts and urinary bladder anchor, and an external protruding intromittent papilla used for insemination. The form of the ampullae differs among the various species, from pear-shaped to horseshoe-shaped. It increases in dimensions with increasing length of the male. In all the species this organ is covered by a connective-tissue tunic that encompasses both circular and longitudinal striated muscle bundles. The lumina of the ampullae harbor the epididymis, a strongly convoluted and plicated duct, which becomes filled with spermatozeugmata during reproduction. From here, the epididymis continues into the protruding intromittent papillae, where its folds gradually straighten at the apical part of the intromittent organ. The form and dimensions of this copulatory organ also differ in the various species. Papillae bearing taste buds are found on the apical parts of the intromittent organ, and it is probable that these, together with the difference in forms of the organ, help to prevent interspecific copulation.  相似文献

Complex genitalia are ubiquitous among arthropods, but little attention has been given to the fact that the evolution of such elaborate structures may have led to biomechanical constraints that hinder their usage. In the rove beetle, Aleochara tristis, the male's intromittant organ consists of a long flagellum that is more than twice the body length. It is introduced into the spermathecal duct of the female during copulation. The flagellum apparently functions as a guiding rod for a tube growing from the spermatophore that the male deposits in the female's genital chamber. The extraordinary length of the intromittant organ poses a unique physical challenge for the male. During its retraction from the female after mating, the flagellum is under considerable tension. Any sudden release of this tension would result in the flagellum becoming severely entangled, preventing the male from mating again. In response to this novel physical challenge, males have apparently evolved a specialized behavioural adaptation that prevents entanglement after copulation. While retracting the flagellum from the female, the male secures it between a wing shoulder and the pronotum ('shouldering'), holding it taut for about one half of its length. This allows the stepwise retraction of the flagellum from the female and allows it to be retracted back into the male's body in an orderly fashion. This is, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of a behavioural adaptation that has evolved to ameliorate the biomechanical problems caused by exaggerated genital morphology.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 307–312.  相似文献

Acanthotrema felis n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae) is described from adult flukes recovered in the small intestine of stray cats caught in the southwestern part of the Republic of Korea. The worms were characterized by minute body size, the presence of a bipartite seminal vesicle, and a ventral sucker associated with a ventrogenital sac, which enclosed 3 sclerites (2 long and pointed, and I short and thumblike), and an unarmed gonotyl. They were assigned to Acanthotrema Travassos, 1928, which currently contains 4 species. The new species resembles A. acanthotrema, the type species, because both have 3 sclerites on the ventrogenital sac. However, all 3 sclerites in the new species are armed with minute spines on their base, whereas only 2 sclerites in A. acanthotrema have minute spines near their tips. Three species of Stictodora Looss, 1899, namely,Stictodora tridactyla Martin and Kuntz, 1955, S. cursitans Kinsella and Heard, 1974, and S. tanayensis Velasquez, 1973, are transferred to Acanthotrema, and the new species is distinguished from them particularly in terms of the number and shape of its sclerites. The generic diagnosis of Acanthotrema is emended.  相似文献

The males of invertebrates from a few phyla, including arthropods, have been reported to practise traumatic insemination (TI; i.e. injecting sperm by using the copulatory organ to penetrate the female''s body wall). As all previously reported arthropod examples have been insects, there is considerable interest in whether TI might have evolved independently in other arthropods. The research reported here demonstrates the first case of TI in the arthropod subphylum Chelicerata, in particular how the genital morphology and mating behaviour of Harpactea sadistica (Řezáč 2008), a spider from Israel, has become adapted specifically for reproduction based on TI. Males have needle-like intromittent organs and females have atrophied spermathecae. In other spiders, eggs are fertilized simultaneously with oviposition, but the eggs of H. sadistica are fertilized in the ovaries (internal fertilization) and develop as embryos before being laid. Sperm-storage organs of phylogenetically basal groups to H. sadistica provide males with last male sperm priority and allow removal of sperm by males that mate later, suggesting that TI might have evolved as an adaptive strategy to circumvent an unfavourable structure of the sperm-storage organs, allowing the first male to mate with paternity advantage. Understanding the functional significance of TI gives us insight into factors underlying the evolution of the genital and sperm-storage morphology in spiders.

Sexually dimorphic head shape is common in vertebrates from teleosts to mammals. Herein we document that cephalic sexual dimorphism is also found in the cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes). Male bonnethead sharks develop a prominent bulge along the anterior margin of the cephalofoil at the onset of sexual maturity. This contrasts with the uniformly rounded anterior margin of adult females and juveniles and embryos of both sexes. The anterior cephalic bulge is produced by elongation of the rod-like rostral cartilages, and its appearance corresponds temporally with the elongation of the rod-like cartilages of the male intromittent organs (claspers). We propose that the rostral cartilage elongation is a byproduct of endocrinological changes at the onset of sexual maturity that stimulate growth of the clasper cartilages. The basal location of the chondrichthyan fishes within the vertebrate clade extends the earliest appearance of cephalic sexual dimorphism among the vertebrates.  相似文献

Both sexes of the earwig Euborellia plebeja (Dermaptera: Anisolabididae) mate frequently. The elongated intromittent organs of males are as long as their bodies. Previous studies have revealed that this organ is used to remove rival sperm from the female sperm-storage organ (spermatheca), the length of which is twice that of the female body. The fitness benefit of sperm removal was quantified using two mating experiments with paternity analysis. As expected, given that the sperm-removal organ is shorter than the sperm-storage organ, males gained only about 20% of paternity per single mating with sperm-saturated females. The significance of frequent repeated matings with the same female by males is discussed.  相似文献

Male genitalia evolve through sexual selection and, in insects, tend to show negative static allometry, low phenotypic variation, and are usually relatively small. Much less is known about the genetic variation and heritability of male genitalia. Additionally, in instances where the intromittent organ is greatly elongated, it is unclear whether typical patterns of genital scaling and variation also apply. In the present study, we investigated the allometry, variation, and heritability of male genital length in the seedbug, Lygaeus equestris , a species with a greatly elongated intromittent organ (i.e. almost as long as male body size). We found that genital length was negatively allometric, in spite of its great length, and was no more variable than nongenital traits. Additionally, genital length was significantly heritable and had considerable evolvability.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 400–405.  相似文献

The permineralized corystosperm pollen organ Pteruchus is described from the early Middle Triassic of Antarctica. Pteruchus fremouwensis consists of an axis bearing numerous, helically arranged microsporophylls, each of which terminates in a distal flattened head. The axis is 1–2 mm in diameter and eustelic. Spherical to elliptical secretory cavities are present in the ground tissue of the axis, microsporophyll, and pollen sac wall. The basal stalk of the microsporophyll is vascularized by a C-shaped strand that gives rise to a midvein and numerous lateral veins in the distal head. At least 38 pollen sacs are borne on the abaxial surface of the microsporophyll head. These are arranged in pairs on either side of lateral veins. Each pollen sac is sessile, elongated, and uniloculate. The pollen sac wall is several cell layers thick early in ontogeny, but reduced to a single layer in thickness when mature. Dehiscence is longitudinal along the inner surface. Pollen is monosulcate and bisaccate, and of the Alisporites-type. The Triassic specimens are the first structurally preserved pollen organs of the Pteruchus-type and can be related to the associated corystosperm stem and leaf genera based on the presence of unique secretory cavities. The morphology of Pteruchus and the relationship of this pollen organ with other Mesozoic and Paleozoic pollen organs is discussed.  相似文献

A detailed study of the exoskeleton and musculature of the phallic organ of Oxyartes lamellatus (Kirby, 1904) (Phasmatodea: Necrosciinae) is here presented - the first study of this kind for Phasmatodea. The asymmetrical phallic organ shows a highly complicated morphology, with several sclerites and many formative structural elements, of which a sclerotised bulb in the ejaculatory duct wall and a long flagellum arising from near it are among the most conspicuous. Four extrinsic and 20 intrinsic phallic muscles were found; many of these are quite compact bundles or sheets, while a few others are diffuse groups of fibres. Phallic morphology in Oxyartes is compared with the literature data on male genitalia in other Phasmatodea, but this is limited by the superficial treatment of phallic organs in the few relevant previous contributions. Yet, phallic organs appear as a useful new character system for phylogenetic reconstruction and species distinction in Phasmatodea. Comparison with phallic organs in other ‘orthopteroid’ insects shows that these organs are too different among orders as to allow for sound homologisation of phallic substructures. Consideration of development of phallic organs does not help in this aspect. There is no evidence of phasmatodean phallic organs being pedomorphic.  相似文献

The climbing habit in palms: Biomechanics of the cirrus and flagellum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Climbing palms in the Arecoideae (Desmoncus) and Calamoideae (rattan palms) both evolved cirrate leaves armed with hooks and grapnels for climbing. Some species of Calamoideae develop a different climbing organ known as the flagellum, which also bears hooks. The present study indicates that geometry and mechanical properties of the cirrus vary between species. Cirrate leaves are constructed to optimize bending and torsion in relation to the deployment of recurved hooks. Hook development, size, and strength vary along cirri and flagella and are consistent with observations of these attachment organs functioning as a ratchet mechanism: hooks increase in strength toward the base of attachment organs and always fail before the axis in strength tests. Hook size and strength differ between species and are related to body size and ecological preference. Larger species produce larger hooks, but smaller climbing palms of the understory deploy fine sharp hooks that are effective on small diameter supports as well as large branches and trunks. The ephemeral nature of climbing organs in palms provides a challenge to their life-history development, particularly in terms of mechanical constraints and remaining attached to the host vegetation; these differ significantly from many vines and lianas having more perennial modes of attachment.  相似文献
