A method for measuring K, the coefficient of thermal conductivity, for a variety of dog tissues is described. The values of K for muscle and liver are larger than that for water, the value of K for lung is smaller than that for water and the values of K for brain, plasma, and blood are about the same as that of water. PurposeTo demonstrate a method of simulating mammography images of the CDMAM phantom and to investigate the coefficient of variation (CoV) in the threshold gold thickness (tT) measurements associated with use of the phantom.MethodsThe noise and sharpness of Hologic Dimensions and GE Essential mammography systems were characterized to provide data for the simulation. The simulation method was validated by comparing the tT results of real and simulated images of the CDMAM phantom for three different doses and the two systems. The detection matrices produced from each of 64 images using CDCOM software were randomly resampled to create 512 sets of 8, 16 and 32 images to estimate the CoV of tT. Sets of simulated images for a range of doses were used to estimate the CoVs for a range of diameters and threshold thicknesses.ResultsNo significant differences were found for tT or the CoV between real and simulated CDMAM images. It was shown that resampling from 256 images was required for estimating the CoV. The CoV was around 4% using 16 images for most of the phantom but is over double that for details near the edge of the phantom.ConclusionsWe have demonstrated a method to simulate images of the CDMAM phantom for different systems at a range of doses. We provide data for calculating uncertainties in tT. Any future review of the European guidelines should take into consideration the calculated uncertainties for the 0.1 mm detail.  相似文献

Population genetic characteristics were estimated in the Alatyr' raion (administrative district) of the Republic of Chuvashia, which has long been populated by three ethnic groups. The ethnic assortativeness values in the town of Alatyr' and the rural area of the district were 1.17 and 1.21, respectively, for Russians; 1.14 and 4.82, respectively, for Chuvashes; and 1.33 and 2.45, respectively, for Mordovians. Wright's statistics were as follows: F st = 0.00358, F it = 0.00178, and F is = 0.00134. The migration indices were 0.0264 for Alatyr' and 0.0178 for the district. The endogamy indices for the total and the Russian populations of Alatyr' were 0.47 and 0.53, respectively. The parameters of isolation by distance were a = 0.000189 and b = 0.009591 for the urban and a = 0.000318 and b = 0.00919 for the rural area. Schemes of the genetic landscape were constructed. The influence of the polyethnic composition on the genetic structure of the population is discussed.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Comparisons were made of the functional responses of mature larvae of Perlodes microcephalus, Isoperla grammatica, Dinocras cephalotes and Perla bipunctata. Experiments were performed in stream tanks with natural substrata and glass bottoms, so that feeding could be observed above and below the substratum. There was one stonefly per tank and one of 10 prey densities between 20 and 200 larvae of either Chironomus sp. or Baetis rhodani per tank. Consumed prey were replaced in a first set of experiments but not in a second set. Additional experiments assessed intraspecific interference between larvae of each predator species (two to five predators per tank). 2. The number of prey eaten increased curvilinearly with prey density. The relationship was described by two models, a Type II instantaneous model and its integrated equivalent, for experiments with and without prey replacement, respectively. Handling time did not change significantly with prey density, and was the same for experiments with and without prey replacement. Estimates of attack rate were similar for the two models, but varied between prey type and predator species. Handling time varied considerably but was normally distributed for each prey type and predator species. Mean handling time varied for Chironomus from 39 s for Isoperla, which rarely ate a whole larva, to 57 s for Perlodes and for Baetis from 116 s for Perlodes to 167 s for Perla. All predators were more efficient at capturing Baetis, but the longer handling time for Baetis ensured that more Chironomus were eaten. It was concluded that these variations in attack rate and handling time were related to activity and growth differences between the predator species, and that experiments with and without prey replacement could both be relevant to the field, depending on how the predators searched for food. 3. In the interference experiments, mean handling time did not change with increasing predator density, but attack rate decreased curvilinearly, the decrease varying from negligible for Isoperla to marked for Perlodes. Prey capture decreased with decreasing attack rate. Therefore, interference reduced prey consumption, but this effect was negligible for Isoperla and increasingly severe in the order Dinocras, Perla and Perlodes.  相似文献

Puerto Rican populations of two species of sea anemones (Bunodosoma cavernata and B. granulifera) which had previously been considered one were assayed electrophoretically for enzymes encoded by 12 loci. The two species shared no common allozymes at 6 of the 12 loci. Genetic distance and identity values based on these allozymes were computed for the Puerto Rican populations and for B. cavernata from Florida and B. granulifera from Panama. The Puerto Rican populations of both species had much higher genetic identities for their geographically distant conspecifics than for each other. These results indicate that the two species are reproductively isolated and should be considered as separate valid species. Average heterozygosities are presented which are the first published for coelenterate species.  相似文献

Activities and characteristics of digestive enzymes of polar and subtropical echinoderms are similar. Specific adaptations to facilitate digestion at low temperature were not observed. Levels of chymotrypsin and β-glucosidase of digestive tissues of the Antarctic asteroids Odontaster validus and Odontaster meridionalis, and the Antarctic echinoid Sterechinus neumayeri, are comparable to levels of the asteroids Henricia downii and Astropecten articulatus from the Gulf of Mexico. α-Glucosidase activities are similar for S. neumayeri and A. articulatus. The pH of maximal activity is 7.5 for disaccharidases and 8.5–9.5 for chymotrypsin for both polar and subtropical species. Affinities for substrates were higher at 25°C than at 0°C for disaccharidases of all species. However, Km values for chymotrypsin increased from 0 to 25°C. Lack of sufficient adaptation by polar echinoderms to facilitate digestion at low temperature may reduce their capacity to digest food. Received: 24 July 1996 / Accepted: 31 January 1997  相似文献

Protoplasts from leaflets ofin vitro cuttings were electroporated in osmotically adjusted and buffered solutions containing plasmid DNA: pABD1, carrying thenptII gene for resistance to neomycin; pGH1, carrying a mutant acetolactate synthase gene,als, for resistance to sulfonylurea; and pGSFR781A, carrying a synthetic phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (pat) for resistance to phosphinothricin (Basta). Gene transfer was repeatedly efficient, without use of carrier DNA, in the range of one transformant for 105 to 104 protoplast-derived cell colonies. This was probably due to the high plating efficiency (30%) of protoplasts in our culture process. Selection for expression of foreign genes was applied in liquid medium and repeatedly achieved with 30 M paromomycin for NPTII, 200 nM chlorsulfuron for the mutant ALS ofArabidopsis and 25 M phosphinothricin for PAT expression. Integration of foreign genes into genomic DNA of resistant poplar trees was demonstrated by Southern blot hybridizations, which revealed that for some transformants practically no other part of the vector plasmid than the selected gene was integrated.Effective processes for protoplast culture, efficient selection at the cell colony stage and gene transfer will provide new possibilities in poplar breeding.  相似文献

1. The maximum rate of production of p-nitrophenol (Vmax.) for both papain- and ficin-catalysed hydrolyses of p-nitrophenyl hippurate is independent of methanol concentration up to 2m for papain and 1·5m for ficin. 2. The observed catalytic constant (k0) for the production of hippuric acid for both papain- and ficin-catalysed hydrolyses of methyl hippurate decreases with increasing methanol concentration, 1/k0 being linearly dependent on the methanol concentration. The kMeOH/kH2O ratio is determined. 3. These results provide strong evidence against general base catalysis for the rate-determining step in the deacylation of hippuryl-papain and hippuryl-ficin and probably for other specific acyl-papains and acyl-ficins. 4. The rate-determining step for the deacylation of the non-specific trans-cinnamoyl-papain appears to be different from that for the specific hippuryl-papain, and is probably subject to general base catalysis. It is possible, however, to accommodate all these observations in a single four-step reaction pathway. 5. Propan-2-ol did not influence the rate of production of hippuric acid for the papain-catalysed hydrolysis of methyl hippurate. A similar result has previously been reported for the ficin-catalysed hydrolysis of methyl hippurate. Ethanol and of course methanol (see 2) decrease the rate of production of hippuric acid for both papain- and ficin-catalysed hydrolyses of methyl hippurate. It is suggested that the secondary alcohol is incapable for structural reasons of approaching the bond to be hydrolysed.  相似文献

Three 1-methoxy analogs of CP-47,497 (7, 8, and 19) have been synthesized and their affinities for the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors have been determined. Although these compounds exhibit selectivity for the CB2 receptor none have significant affinity for either receptor. Modeling and receptor docking studies were carried out, which provide a rationalization for the weak affinities of these compounds for either receptor.  相似文献

It takes about 2 months for the molding process of Katsuobushi (dried bonito) production. A model of a short-term system for the molding process was desirable for the efficient selection of useful fungi for Katsuobushi production by evaluating the flavor change in the model system.

A liquid culture system using Nijiru (waste fluid of Katsuobushi sterilization), which is obtained from the Kezuribushi (sliced Katsuobushi) manufacturing process and contains abundant phenolic compounds of smoke tar, was found to be suitable for the short-term evaluation of a 10 day culture.  相似文献

Duggleby [Duggleby, R.G., 1979. Experimental designs for estimating kinetic parameters for enzyme-catalyzed reactions. J. Theor. Biol. 81, 672-684] discussed the “design of several replicate measurements of the velocity at as many experimental conditions as there are parameters to be estimated.” He discussed the application of this method to Aproducts, without and with competitive inhibition, and commented briefly on A+Bproducts. The availability of computer applications that can solve large sets of simultaneous equations makes it possible to use this method to calculate kinetic parameters for more complicated enzyme mechanisms. This article is concerned with rapid-equilibrium rate equations, but this method can also be used with steady-state rate equations. Computer programs are provided for the calculation of the three kinetic parameters for ordered A+Bproducts from three velocity measurements and for the calculation of the four kinetic parameters for random A+Bproducts from four velocity measurements. Computer programs are also provided for competitive inhibition, uncompetitive inhibition, and mixed inhibition of ordered A+Bproducts.  相似文献

A "translation" of the phenomenological permeability coefficients into friction and distribution coefficients amenable to physical interpretation is presented. Expressions are obtained for the solute permeability coefficient ω and the reflection coefficient σ for both non-electrolytic and electrolytic permeants. An analysis of the coefficients is given for loose membranes as well as for dense natural membranes where transport may go through capillaries or by solution in the lipoid parts of the membrane. Water diffusion and filtration and the relation between these and capillary pore radius of the membrane are discussed. For the permeation of ions through the charged membranes equations are developed for the case of zero electrical current in the membrane. The correlation of σ with ω and Lp for electrolytes resembles that for non-electrolytes. In this case ω and σ depend markedly on ion concentration and on the charge density of the membrane. The reflection coefficient may assume negative values indicating anomalous osmosis. An analysis of the phenomena of anomalous osmosis was carried out for the model of Teorell and Meyer and Sievers and the results agree with the experimental data of Loeb and of Grim and Sollner. A set of equations and reference curves are presented for the evaluation of ω and σ in the transport of polyvalent ions through charged membranes.  相似文献

The influence of bracteoles on the germination response of asalt marsh annual, Atriplex prostrata, and a salt desert perennial,A. griffithii, was determined. Attached bracteoles did not inhibitgermination of A. prostrata but completely inhibited germinationof A. griffithii seeds. Germination of seeds ofA. griffithiiwas also somewhat inhibited in the presence of detached bracteoles.The osmotic potential of dissolved substances in water-saturatedbracteoles was -4.8 ± 0.05 MPa for A. griffithii and-2.4 ± 0.15 MPa for A. prostrata. Ash content of bracteoleson a dry weight basis was 28.7 ± 0.37% for A. prostrataand 30.0 ± 0.29% for A. griffithii. The presence of relativelyhigh concentrations of dissolved salts in bracteoles may explainthe reduced germination of A. griffithii. Germination of seedsof the perennial A. griffithii may also be inhibited mechanicallyby the presence of persistent bracteoles, whereas the annualA. prostrata has ephemeral bracteoles that may serve to limitgermination in the autumn but are not present during the normalspring germination period. Bracteoles could affect the dispersalof seeds by water since some fruiting structures of A. griffithiiand A. prostrata are able to float in 1.0% NaCl solutions for5 and >30 d, respectively, compared with a maximum of 4 and3 d for seeds without bracteoles. Fruiting structures of A.prostrata floated for longer over a range of salinities thandid those ofA. griffithii ; this may play a significant rolein the dispersal of this salt marsh species. The minimum width and the length of each diaphysis of the hand were measured on serial radiographs of 20 boys and 20 girls. These radiographs were taken close to each birthday at ages from 3 to 13 years inclusive. The corresponding length-width ratios were calculated from these parameters. The b values (indicating rates of change) were calculated for width and length-width ratio in each diaphysis in each child. Communality indices (mean r between b values) were calculated for individual diaphyses. These communality indices reflect the associations between each diaphysis and all the other diaphyses of the hand in their rates of change in width and length-width ratio. The sex differences were not statistically significant for mean b values but they were significant for the communality indices for width (boys higher) and length-width ratio (girls higher). Statistically significant neighborhood effects were present in communality indices for widths within rays for the girls and for ratios within rays for both sexes. There were statistically significant marginal effects in communality indices for widths in the girls within rows and for length-width ratios in the boys within rays.  相似文献

Summary The accumulation of NH3 and NO3 during incubation, under standard conditions, of nine mineral soils was determined following one week and 12 weeks air-dry storage.NH3 accumulation was usually slightly greater whilst NO3 accumulation was usually less during incubation after 12 weeks than after one week of air-dry storage. However, for the soils as a whole there were only small differences in either constituent accumulating during incubation due to period of air-dry storage.Total mineral nitrogen accumulation (NH3 +NO3 N) was very similar for four of the soils, was lower for three of the soils, and was higher for two of the soils during incubation following 12 weeks than following 1 week of air-dry storage. The effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and silicon on growth of five species of marine benthic diatoms, namely Navicula patrickae, Nitzschia panduriformis, Navicula thienemannii, Nitzschia longissima and Navicula atomus were studied by single factor experiments and the optimal concentration ratios of the four nutrient elements beneficial for diatoms growth were screened out separately using the L9 (34) orthogonal design. The results highlighted that nitrogen, phosphorus, iron and silicon all had highly significant effects on growth of five diatoms while the diatoms growth rates reached the highest averagely in the 2nd to the 6th culture day. In addition, the optimal concentrations (mg/L) of four nutrients suitable for diatoms growth were found higher than that in f/2 medium except that Nitzschia longissima had the same concentration of nitrogen as that in f/2 medium which is optimal for growth. Moreover, the optimal growth concentrations of four elements for five diatoms varied in the range of 12.36–74.16 mg/L for nitrogen, 1.70–3.98 mg/L for phosphorus, 2.00–4.00 mg/L for iron, 23.01–69.03 mg/L for silicon, respectively. By means of the orthogonal test of four nutrients for five benthic diatoms, the optimal concentration ratios N:P:Fe:Si (mg/L) were obtained as follows: 74.16:2.27:3.33:23.01 for N. patrickae; 37.08:3.98:4.00:11.50 for N. panduriformis; 49.44:3.98:3.33:34.51 for N. thienemannii; 12.36:1.70:4.00:11.50 for N. longissima; 74.16:2.27:4.00:69.03 for N. atomus.  相似文献

The Chou-Fasman method for calculating the secondary structure of F and Le interferons from their amino acid sequences predicts several regions of homologous structure in the two interferons. Those areas tend to be located in the middle and C- terminal ends of the molecules. Total predicted content of α helix is 55% for Le interferon and 36% for F interferon. Patterns with of body size and mass age variation in five gastropod species of Buccinidae family from Ussuriisky Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) were studied. Equations of body size and mass correlation were obtained for each species, Bertalanffy's equations of group growth were estimated, and specifics of rates of linear growth and of body mass with age variation were considered. It was determined that in the survey area, the life span for Buccinum bayani bayani was nine years; for B. verkruzeni, 11; for Neptunea constricta, 17; for N. lyrata lyrata 18; and for N. polycostata, 16.  相似文献

Tables for Bonferroni-adjusted significance levels of Student's t are provided for r = 3(1)30(5)50 etc. and alphas of 0.05, 0.01 and 0.001. The tables are suggested for various applications, for example in replacing analysis of variance of k samples by r simultaneous t tests. Use of the tables is shown by numerical examples. The adjustment of alpha for improving the efficiency of testing is made by WILKINSON for orthogonal comparisons and by HOLM for nonorthogonal comparisons.  相似文献

Comparison of plant uptake and plant toxicity of various ions in wheat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effects of varying solution concentrations of manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), iron (Fe), gallium (Ga) and lanthanum (La) on plant chemical concentrations, plant uptake and plant toxicity were determined in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in a low ionic strength (2.7×10–3 M solution culture). Increasing the solution concentration of Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Fe, Ga and La increased plant concentrations of that ion. Asymptotic maximum plant concentrations were reached for Zn (10 mg kg DM–1 in the roots), Ga (2 mg kg DM–1 in the tops and 18 mg kg DM–1 in the roots) and La (0.4 mg kg DM–1 in the tops and 4 mg kg DM–1 in the roots). Plant ion concentrations were, on average, 3 times higher in the roots than the tops for Mn and Zn, 7 times for Cu, 9 times for Fe, 12 times for Ga and 15 times for La. In contrast, B concentrations were higher in the tops than the roots by, on average, 2 times. The estimated toxicity threshold (plant concentration at which a rapid decrease in yield occurred) in the tops was 0.4 mg g DM–1 for B, 2 for Zn, 0.075 for Cu and 0.09 for La and in the roots 0.2 mg g DM–1 for B, 5 for Zn, 0.3 for Cu and 3 for La. Plant uptake rates of the ions (as estimated by the slope of the relationship between solution ion concentrations and plant ion concentrations) was in the order B 250 mg kg DM–1 M –1). Plant toxicity was estimated as the reciprocal of the plant concentration that reduced yield by 50% (change in relative yield per mg ion kg DM–1).
