The clasper gland of the Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina, was examined over a 1-year period, covering an entire reproductive cycle. Changes in clasper gland tissue architecture, fluid production, and cell proliferation were assessed. No changes in tissue architecture were observed. Evidence of cell proliferation in the gland epithelium was not detected using immunocytochemistry for proliferating cell nuclear antigen, a cellular marker of mitosis. Epithelial cells were not observed to undergo mitosis, and cell membranes remained intact. The lack of structural changes and epithelial cell proliferation supports the proposed merocrinal mode of fluid secretion. Rays captured in nonbreeding months had clasper glands that exhibited tubules with reduced lumens. In contrast, rays caught during the breeding season had clasper gland tubules with enlarged lumens. Clasper gland fluid production was quantified through measurements of the fluid area and tubule area calculated from digital images. Clasper gland fluid production was significantly higher during the mating period than during months not associated with copulatory activity. These data support the notion that the clasper gland is involved in stingray copulatory activity. This study adds to the limited amount of literature focused on this poorly understood component of reproduction in skates and rays.  相似文献

The clearance and excretion of creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium by the kidney was evaluated in 62 owl monkeys using timed urine collections and quantitative urinalyses. The endogenous clearance of creatinine was determined for each monkey. Urinary electrolyte excretion and fractional electrolyte excretions (FE) were measured. Linear regression analysis was used to calculate the correlation between urinary excretion and FE for each electrolyte. The coefficient of determination for each analyte was significant (P ? .0001). Determination of FE was found to be an appropriate indicator of the renal handling of electrolytes and, when viewed in conjunction with urinalysis and other serum parameters, an aid in evaluating renal function in the owl monkey. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Thirteen men were submitted to graded exhaustive cycle exercise to determine the kinetics of proteinuria in the recovery period. Venous blood samples were analysed for haematocrit, lactate, creatinine, total protein and albumin for 1 h following exercise. Urine samples were collected during a 3-h recovery period. Total protein, albumin, and creatinine levels were determined for these samples. Total protein and albumin urinary excretion increased to 581 and 315 micrograms min-1, respectively, at the end of the 1st h of recovery as compared to 42 and 15 micrograms.min-1 for resting values. Plasma volume returned to pre-exercise levels between 30 and 60 min after cessation of exercise, while urinary total protein and albumin content still remained above the resting values for the following 2 h. Both post-exercise urinary total protein and albumin excretion followed a logarithmic decline with the same half-life of 54 min, thus requiring about 4 h to regain resting values. The reduction of plasma volume and the degree of dehydration do not seem to be involved in the process. The present study indicates the delayed recovery of protein handling by the kidney, as compared with other biochemical parameters, and provides accurate information on the kinetics of post-exercise proteinuria.  相似文献

The antihypertensive effect of Brand's Essence of Chicken (BEC), a popular chicken extract used as a traditional health food, was examined with stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSPs). The animals were maintained from 6 to 25 weeks of age on drinking water with or without BEC. The BEC-fed group showed a significant reduction in the development of hypertension when compared with the control animals. The levels of blood urea nitrogen and plasma creatinine in the BEC-fed group were significantly lower than those in the control group, suggesting that the renal glomerular function had been improved by the daily administration of BEC. It thus seems likely that BEC would be useful as a prophylactic treatment against the development of hypertension and renal injury.  相似文献

The age, growth and maturity of bonnetheads Sphyrna tiburo inhabiting the estuarine and coastal waters of the western North Atlantic Ocean (WNA) from Onslow Bay, North Carolina, south to West Palm Beach, Florida, were examined. Vertebrae were collected and aged from 329 females and 217 males ranging in size from 262 to 1043 mm and 245 to 825 mm fork length, LF, respectively. Sex‐specific von Bertalanffy growth curves were fitted to length‐at‐age data. Female von Bertalanffy parameters were L = 1036 mm LF, k = 0·18, t0 = ?1·64 and L0 = 272 mm LF. Males reached a smaller theoretical asymptotic length and had a higher growth coefficient (L = 782 mm LF, k = 0·29, t0 = ?1·43 and L0 = 266 mm LF). Maximum observed age was 17·9 years for females and 16·0 years for males. Annual deposition of growth increments was verified by marginal increment analysis and validated for age classes 2·5+ to 10·5+ years through recapture of 13 oxytetracycline‐injected specimens at liberty in the wild for 1–4 years. Length (LF50) and age (A50) at 50% maturity were 819 mm and 6·7 years for females, and 618 mm and 3·9 years for males. Both female and male S. tiburo in the WNA had a significantly higher maximum observed age, LF50, A50 and L, and a significantly lower k and estimated L0 than evident in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). These significant differences in life‐history parameters, as well as evidence from tagging and genetic studies, suggest that S. tiburo in the WNA and GOM should be considered separate stocks.  相似文献

Shark populations tend to be highly vulnerable to overexploitation due to low fecundity and slow growth rates. Recent fishing pressure on the smooth dogfish in the northwest Atlantic has created a necessity for more information about their basic biology. Length and age at maturity, fecundity, and reproductive season were estimated. Total length at 50% maturity was 102cm for females, and 86cm for males. The majority of females were mature at age 4 or 5, and all males were mature at 2 or 3 years of age. Females had an 11–12 month gestation with parturition occurring in May, ovulation occurring between May and July likely in late May and early June, and mating occurring between May and September. Fecundity ranged between 3 and 18 pups per litter, and was positively related to length and age, with a mean of 9.53 pups per litter. Sperm was found in the terminal zone of the oviducal gland of females throughout the year.  相似文献

Summary Fluvial salmonids have evolved to use the diversity of habitats in natural streams for different life history stages and at different seasons. Required freshwater habitat of Atlantic salmon can be classified generally as that suitable (i) for spawning, (ii) for feeding during the major growing period, and (iii) for overwintering.Spawning habitat of salmon is usually in rapid water at the tail of pools on the upstream edge of a gravel bar, ideally with depths about 25 cm, in mean water velocities of about 30–45 cm s-1, with maximum velocities about 2 body lengths s-1, and with a substrate of irregularly shaped stones of cobble, pebble, and gravel.Underyearling salmon (<7 cm TL) are most common in shallow (<15 cm) pebbly riffles, whereas older and larger parr (>7 cm TL) are usually in riffles deeper than 20 cm with a coarse substrate. Depth preference increases with size. Multiple linear regression models quantifying parr habitat have identified substrate as an important variable, with a positive relationship to an index of coarseness. Negative relationships were found with mean stream width, range of discharge, and overhanging cover. Water chemistry, especially alkalinity, nitrates, and phosphates, are important regulators of production. Although similar variables had importance, coefficients among rivers differed. Interactions occur among variables. Further studies are required to quantify productive capacity of habitat for parr. Results suggest that useful models can be derived and if a river system is mapped, and stratified by habitat, then smolt yield could be predicted and the required egg deposition could be estimated. In winter, young salmon shelter among coarse substrate or move to pools, but continue feeding, with larger parr being more active.Feeding is in general opportunistic. Food consists mainly of insects, taken primarily in the water column, but also from the surface and at the bottom. Young salmon in flowing water are highly territorial but are less so in slow or still waters. In fast water, parr use their large pectoral fins to apply themselves to the substrate, allowing them to occupy this type of habitat with little expenditure of energy. Height above the substrate decreases with water velocity, but increases with temperature and social status. Although riffles are preferred habitat, and are relatively more productive, lentic waters can be occupied where there are few predators or severe competitors and may provide significant smolt yield in some systems. Selective segregation minimizes competition between salmon and brook charr or brown trout, but brook charr and brown trout may have negative effects on underyearling salmon, and on parr in pools, whereas salmon have negative effects on small brook charr and brown trout in riffles and flats. Competition by both interference and exploitation results in interactive segregation when the resource, mainly food, becomes limiting.Limited downstream movement of underyearling salmon may occur during the summer. Older juveniles may make upstream movements, but generally migrate downstream, with most movements in the spring, and a lesser peak of activity in the autumn. Dispersal tends to be mainly downstream, indicating that for full distribution, spawning areas are best located upstream. High densities of yearling parr may have negative effects on growth and survival of underyearlings in some river systems, but apparently not in others, so that future research is required in this regard. Density-dependent growth is evident where food is limiting, and can provide an indicator of densities of cohorts so that if a quantitative relationship has been derived, mean size from a sample can give an estimate of the density at that station, with minimum size occurring at carrying capacity. Such regressions vary between habitats with differing productive capabilities, so that future research could provide useful models for assessing productive capacity of a habitat, and optimum densities. Life history strategies can change with changes in density-dependent growth rates. Present stock-recruitment functions do not take environmental variables into consideration, and have limited applicability. Further research is required to determine optimum spawning requirements for salmon in different types of river systems in different geographical areas.  相似文献

The recently described Lutz's stingray Hypanus berthalutzae is endemic to the Brazilian Province, including oceanic islands. Although it is expected to have life-history traits similar to the southern stingray H. americanus, little is known about its reproductive biology. Here we present the first observations of courtship behaviour (n = 4), copulation (n = 3) and an induced parturition of H. berthalutzae at the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, an insular Marine Protected Area from the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The mating event records included (1) ‘chasing/close following’, (2) ‘biting/precopulatory biting’, (3) ‘insertion/copulation’ and (4) ‘separation’. These results are especially relevant considering that records of reproductive behaviour in the wild are rare for elasmobranchs in general. Mating events occurred in different months, suggesting that the reproductive cycle of H. berthalutzae in this insular system is asynchronous, as observed for other stingray species in regions with favourable environmental conditions and abundant food throughout the year. The opportunistic documentation of the induced parturition allowed for direct nonlethal observation of the two pups at or near full term in late May. Although preliminary, these observations should be considered in future management plans as they provide relevant data about the life-history traits and mating behaviour of this endemic and threatened species.  相似文献

Summary Atlantic salmon may return to the sea after spawning in fresh water. These fish, known as kelts, reportedly show a limited ability to hypoosmoregulate. However, this study shows that fresh-water-adapted kelts exposed to seawater demonstrate rapid adaptation (within 48 h) in osmoregulatory parameters to values characteristic of seawater-adapted salmonids. The urine flow rate falls from 1.2 to 0.2 ml·kg-1·h-1 within 24 h. Over the same period, urine osmolality increases from 48 mosmol·kg-1 to become isosmotic with the plasma, and Mg2+ secretion by the kidney tubules elevates the urine concentration from 0.5 to 100 mmol·l-1. As is characteristic for marine teleosts, kelts drink seawater and process the ingested water in the gut to replace body water lost by osmosis to the hyperosmotic medium. Seawater exposure causes a marked hypoxia, arterial oxygen tension falling by 43% within minutes and persisting for at least 4 days at this low level. This is associated with large changes in blood pH and acid-base balance. The physiological mechanisms involved in adaptation to a hyperosmotic external medium are discussed, and the osmoregulatory capacity of kelts is compared with that of salmon at other stages of the life cycle.Abbreviations FW fresh water - GFR glomerular filtration rate - Hb haemoglobin - Hct haematocrit - MCHC mean cell haemoglobin concentration - pHa pH in arterial blood - P aO2 partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood - SEM standard error of mean - SW seawater - UFR urine flow rate  相似文献

Synopsis Dasyatis laosensis, a new species, is described from the Mekong River where it forms the border between Laos and Thailand. It is the first member of the genus Dasyatis to be described as an endemic freshwater species from Southeast Asia. Bright orange color on the ventral surface of the disc and similar meristic characters indicate that it may be closely related to Dasyatis akajei, a marine species from southern Japan and China, and to Dasyatis sp. undetermined, from the West River in Guangxi, southern China.  相似文献

The reproduction of the sandbar shark Carcharhinus plumbeus in the U.S. south‐eastern Atlantic Ocean including the Gulf of Mexico was examined using a combination of histological and morphological characteristics of C. plumbeus collected through fishery‐dependent and ‐independent sampling programmes (n = 1,567). Indices of maturity were constructed using measurements of gonads, reproductive tracts and claspers, and sandbar sharks exhibited 50% maturity sizes of 140 and 148 cm fork length for males and females respectively. Gonado‐somatic indices and variation in reproductive tract condition were used to determine seasonal trends in reproduction of mature C. plumbeus. Sandbar sharks have discrete seasonal reproductive cycles in which males produce sperm from January to May with a peak in May and females develop eggs from January to May with ovulation occurring in June. Females were shown to exhibit a >2 year reproductive cycle. Embryonic development was assessed through measurements of masses and lengths of uterine contents. Gestation was 12 months, from July to the following June, with parturition in late June. This research highlights a difference from previously reported data on the periodicity of female reproduction in C. plumbeus in the U.S. south‐eastern Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, which may have major effects on future C. plumbeus stock management.  相似文献

During low-water period, freshwater stingray Paratrygon aiereba collected in the whitewater (WW) of the River Amazon showed higher urea content, osmolality, Na+ and Cl concentrations in plasma and perivisceral fluid than those caught in blackwater (BW) of the River Negro. Gills and kidney Na+–K+-ATPase activities were significantly lower in WW than in BW fish. The high level of kidney Na+–K+-ATPase activity in P. aiereba may minimize ion loss and generate diluted solute-free urine in ion-poor BW environment.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate reproductive and population parameters of the spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias for the south‐western Atlantic Ocean. In total, 2714 specimens (1616 males and 1098 females) were collected from surveys carried out using research vessels. Males ranged from 225 to 861 mm total length (LT) and females from 235 to 925 mm LT. The size at maturity of females (651 mm) was significantly greater than that of males (565 mm). The maximum proportion of mature individuals (Pmax) of the gestation ogive was <1, which indicates that a proportion of mature females was not in gestation. This inactivity may be explained by the occurrence of resting periods between cycles or by the asynchrony of the reproductive cycle. The estimated Pmax for the maternity ogive suggested that about one third of mature females were in the maternity stage (i.e. with embryos >156 mm). The temporal and spatial co‐occurrence of non‐gravid adult females at different stages of ovarian development, as well as gravid females at all embryonic development stages would indicate that the female reproductive cycle in the south‐western Atlantic Ocean is asynchronous. The results indicate that S. acanthias is susceptible to fishing pressure on account of its length at maturity, extended reproductive cycles and low fecundity.  相似文献

The biological function of anatomical specializations in the mechanosensory lateral line of elasmobranch fishes is essentially unknown. The gross and histological features of the lateral line in the Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina, were examined with special reference to its role in the localization and capture of natural invertebrate prey. Superficial neuromasts are arranged in bilateral rows near the dorsal midline from the spiracle to the posterior body disk and in a lateral position along the entire length of the tail. All dorsal lateral line canals are pored, contain sensory neuromasts, and have accessory lateral tubules that most likely function to increase their receptive field. The pored ventral canal system consists of the lateral hyomandibular canal along the disk margin and the short, separate mandibular canal on the lower jaw. The extensive nonpored and relatively compliant ventral infraorbital, supraorbital, and medial hyomandibular canals form a continuous complex on the snout, around the mouth, and along the abdomen. Vesicles of Savi are small mechanosensory subdermal pouches that occur in bilateral rows only along the ventral midline of the rostrum. Superficial neuromasts are best positioned to detect water movements along the transverse body axis such as those produced by tidal currents, conspecifics, or predators. The pored dorsal canal system is positioned to detect water movements created by conspecifics, predators, or possibly distortions in the flow field during swimming. Based upon the stingray lateral line morphology and feeding behavior, we propose the Mechanotactile Hypothesis, which states that the ventral nonpored canals and vesicles of Savi function as specialized tactile mechanoreceptors that facilitate the detection and capture of small benthic invertebrate prey. Cetorhinus maximus aggregations recorded during extensive aerial survey efforts off the north‐eastern United States between 1980 and 2013 included aggregations centring on sightings with group sizes of at least 30 individuals. These aggregations occurred in summer and autumn months and included aggregation sizes of up to 1398 individuals, the largest aggregation ever reported for this species. The aggregations were associated with sea surface temperatures of 13–24° C and chlorophyll‐a concentrations of 0·4–2·6 mg m?3 and during one aggregation, a high abundance of zooplankton prey was present. Photogrammetric tools allowed for the estimation of total body lengths ranging between 4 and 8 m. Characterization of these events provides new insight into the potential biological function of large aggregations in this species.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine the circadian rhythm of active renal and biliary excretion of ampicillin. Sprague-Dawley male rats, housed under a light-dark (12 h: 12 h) cycle, were used in these studies. Rats received an i.v. bolus of ampicillin (50 mg/kg) at 0800, 1200, 1600, 2000, 2400, and 0400. Plasma, bile, and urine were collected. There was a significant circadian rhythm in the renal and biliary clearances of ampicillin. Clearance was increased approximately twofold during the active cycle compared with the resting cycle. No change in volume of distribution was noted. Therefore, the mean residence time of ampicillin was significantly lower during the active cycle. Since the majority of ampicillin that is excreted into the urine and bile is actively secreted via the anion carrier-mediated pathway, the circadian rhythm of glomerular filtration cannot explain the variation observed in this study. Changes in renal/hepatic blood flow could explain, in part, the circadian rhythm observed in these studies; however, variability in either the capacity of the anionic carrier or the binding affinity of the drug for the carrier cannot be ruled out.  相似文献
