In order to evaluate genotypic variation, we measured leaf photosynthetic rate (Pn) and its associated factors for the rice diversity research set of germplasm (RDRS) selected from the Genebank in National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS). Pn showed large genotypic variation from 11.9 to 32.1 micromol m(-2 )s(-1). The variation in stomatal conductance to CO2 (Gs) explained about 50% of that in Pn, while that in nitrogen concentration (N) in leaves explained about 35%. The genotype group which mainly consists of aus type indica tended to have higher Gs, and the genotype group which corresponds to japonica had a higher nitrogen concentration (N) in leaves. The relationships of Pn with Gs and N were not significantly different among genotype groups, suggesting photosynthetic efficiencies are similar among genotype groups.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess genotypic variation in soybean chlorophyll (Chl) content and composition, and to test if these data could be used as a rapid screening method to predict genotypic variation in leaf tissue N content. Chl contents and composition were examined among 833 soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) accessions and related to SPAD meter readings and leaf N content. In the initial year of the study (2002), the relationship between leaf Chl and leaf N contents (r 2 = 0.043) was not sufficiently close for Chl to be useful as a predictive tool for leaf N content. Therefore, leaf N content was not determined in 2004 but samples were again collected for determination of Chl content and composition. In 2002, the soybean accessions separated into two distinct groups according to leaf Chl a/b ratios, with the majority of a mean ratio of 3.79. However, approximately 7 % (60) of the genotypes could be readily assigned to a group with a mean Chl a/b ratio of 2.67. Chl a/b analyses in 2004 confirmed the results obtained in 2002 and of 202 genotypes, all but 6 fell into the same group as in 2002.  相似文献

Soil drying causes leaf rolling in rice, but the relationship between leaf rolling and drought tolerance has historically confounded selection of drought‐tolerant genotypes. In this study on tropical japonica and aus diversity panels (170–220 genotypes), the degree of leaf rolling under drought was more affected by leaf morphology than by stomatal conductance, leaf water status, or maintenance of shoot biomass and grain yield. A range of canopy temperature and leaf rolling (measured as change in normalized difference vegetation index [ΔNDVI]) combinations were observed among aus genotypes, indicating that some genotypes continued transpiration while rolled. Association mapping indicated colocation of genomic regions for leaf rolling score and ΔNDVI under drought with previously reported leaf rolling genes and gene networks related to leaf anatomy. The relatively subtle variation across these large diversity panels may explain the lack of agreement of this study with earlier reports that used small numbers of genotypes that were highly divergent in hydraulic traits driving leaf rolling differences. This study highlights the large range of physiological responses to drought among rice genotypes and emphasizes that drought response processes should be understood in detail before incorporating them into a varietal selection programme.  相似文献

Although leaf size is one of the most responsive plant traits to environmental change, the functional benefits of large versus small leaves remain unclear. We hypothesized that modification of leaf size within species resulting from differences in irradiance can allow leaves to acclimate to different photosynthetic or evaporative conditions while maintaining an efficient balance between hydraulic supply (vein density) and evaporative demand. To test this, we compared the function and anatomy of leaf hydraulic systems in the leaves of a woody angiosperm (Toona ciliata M. Roem.) grown under high and low irradiance in controlled conditions. Our results confirm that in this species, differential leaf expansion regulates the density of veins and stomata such that leaf hydraulic conductance and stomatal conductance remain proportional. A broader sample of field-grown tree species suggested that differences in leaf venation and stomatal traits induced by sun and shade were not regulated by leaf size in all cases. Our results, however, suggest that leaf size plasticity can provide an efficient way for plants to acclimate hydraulic and stomatal conductances to the contrasting evaporative conditions of sun and shade.  相似文献

Night-time leaf conductance ( g night) and transpiration may have several adaptive benefits related to plant water, nutrient and carbon relations. Little is known, however, about genetic variation in g night and whether this variation correlates with other gas exchange traits related to water use and/or native habitat climate. We investigated g night in 12 natural accessions and three near isogenic lines (NILs) of Arabidopsis thaliana . Genetic variation in g night was found for the natural accessions, and g night was negatively correlated with native habitat atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPDair), suggesting lower g night may be favoured by natural selection in drier habitats. However, there were also significant genetic correlations of g night with daytime gas exchange traits expected to affect plant fitness [i.e. daytime leaf conductance, photosynthesis and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi)], indicating that selection on daytime gas exchange traits may result in indirect selection on g night. The comparison of three NILs to their parental genotypes identified one quantitative trait locus (QTL) contributing to variation in g night. Further characterization of genetic variation in g night within and among populations and species, and of associations with other traits and native habitats will be needed to understand g night as a putatively adaptive trait.  相似文献

We examined functional coordination among stem and root vulnerability to xylem cavitation, plant water transport characteristics and leaf traits in 14 co-occurring temperate tree species. Relationships were evaluated using both traditional cross-species correlations and phylogenetically independent contrast (PIC) correlations. For stems, the xylem tension at which 50% of hydraulic conductivity was lost (psi50) was positively associated (P < 0.001) with specific conductivity (K(S)) and with mean hydraulically weighted xylem conduit diameter (D(h-w)), but was only marginally (P = 0.06) associated with leaf specific conductivity (K(L)). The PIC correlation for each of these relationships, however, was not statistically significant. There was also no relationship between root psi50 and root K(S) in either cross-species or PIC analysis. Photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (g(s)) were strongly and positively correlated with root psi50 in the cross-species analysis (P < 0.001), a relationship that was robust to phylogenetic correction (P < 0.01). A and g(s) were also positively correlated with stem psi50 in the cross-species analysis (P = 0.02 and 0.10, respectively). However, only A was associated with stem psi50 in the PIC analysis (P = 0.04). Although the relationship between vulnerability to cavitation and xylem conductivity traits within specific organs (i.e. stems and roots) was weak, the strong correlation between g(s) and root psi50 across species suggests that there is a trade-off between vulnerability to cavitation and water transport capacity at the whole-plant level. Our results were therefore consistent with the expectation of coordination between vulnerability to xylem cavitation and the regulation of stomatal conductance, and highlight the potential physiological and evolutionary significance of root hydraulic properties in controlling interspecific variation in leaf function.  相似文献

Leaf area expansion, thickness and inclination, gas exchange parameters and relative chlorophyll content were analysed in field‐grown fig (Ficus carica L.) leaves over time, from emergence until after full leaf expansion (FLE). Ficus carica leaves showed a subtle change in shape during the early stages of development, and FLE was reached within ca. 30 days after emergence. Changes in leaf thickness and inclination after FLE demonstrated good adaptation to environmental conditions during summer in areas with a Mediterranean climate. Changes in gas exchange parameters and relative chlorophyll content showed that F. carica is a delayed‐greening species, reaching maximum values 20 days after FLE. Correlation analysis of datasets collected during leaf expansion, confirmed dependence among structural and functional traits in F. carica. Pn was directly correlated with stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration (E), leaf area (LA) and relative chlorophyll content up to FLE. The effect of pruning on leaf expansion, a cultural technique commonly applied in this fruit tree, was also evaluated. Although leaf development in pruned branches gave a significantly higher relative leaf area growth rate (RGRl) and higher LA than non‐pruned branches, no significant differences were found in other morphological and physiological traits, indicating no pruning effect on leaf development. All studied morphological and physiological characteristics indicate that F. carica is well adapted to semiarid conditions. The delayed greening strategy of this species is discussed.  相似文献

The coordination of veins and stomata during leaf acclimation to sun and shade can be facilitated by differential epidermal cell expansion so large leaves with low vein and stomatal densities grow in shade, effectively balancing liquid‐ and vapour‐phase conductances. As the difference in vapour pressure between leaf and atmosphere (VPD) determines transpiration at any given stomatal density, we predict that plants grown under high VPD will modify the balance between veins and stomata to accommodate greater maximum transpiration. Thus, we examined the developmental responses of these traits to contrasting VPD in a woody angiosperm (Toona ciliata M. Roem.) and tested whether the relationship between them was altered. High VPD leaves were one‐third the size of low VPD leaves with only marginally greater vein and stomatal density. Transpirational homeostasis was thus maintained by reducing stomatal conductance. VPD acclimation changed leaf size by modifying cell number. Hence, plasticity in vein and stomatal density appears to be generated by plasticity in cell size rather than cell number. Thus, VPD affects cell number and leaf size without changing the relationship between liquid‐ and vapour‐phase conductances. This results in inefficient acclimation to VPD as stomata remain partially closed under high VPD.  相似文献

We examined the relationships among productivity, water use efficiency (WUE) and drought tolerance in 29 genotypes of Populus x euramericana (Populus deltoides x Populus nigra), and investigated whether some leaf traits could be used as predictors for productivity, WUE and drought tolerance. At Orléans, France, drought was induced on one field plot by withholding water, while a second plot remained irrigated and was used as a control. Recorded variables included stem traits (e.g. biomass) and leaf structural (e.g. leaf area) and functional traits [e.g. intrinsic water use efficiency (Wi) and carbon isotope discrimination (Delta)]. Productivity and Delta displayed large genotypic variability and were not correlated. Delta scaled negatively with Wi and positively with stomatal conductance under moderate drought, suggesting that the diversity for Delta was mainly driven by stomatal conductance. Most of the productive genotypes displayed a low level of drought tolerance (i.e. a large reduction of biomass), while the less productive genotypes presented a large range of drought tolerance. The ability to increase WUE in response to water deficit was necessary but not sufficient to explain the genotypic diversity of drought tolerance.  相似文献

This study investigated the mechanisms involved in the regulation of stomatal closure in Douglas-fir and evaluated the potential impact of compensatory adjustments in response to increasing tree height upon these mechanisms. In the laboratory, we measured leaf hydraulic conductance (K(leaf)) as leaf water potential (Psi(l)) declined for comparison with in situ diurnal patterns of stomatal conductance (g(s)) and Psi(l) in Douglas-fir across a height gradient, allowing us to infer linkages between diurnal changes in K(leaf) and g(s). A recently developed timed rehydration technique was used in conjunction with data from pressure-volume curves to develop hydraulic vulnerability curves for needles attached to small twigs. Laboratory-measured K(leaf) declined with increasing leaf water stress and was substantially reduced at Psi(l) values of -1.34, -1.45, -1.56 and -1.92 MPa for foliage sampled at mean heights of approximately 20, 35, 44 and 55 m, respectively. In situ g(s) measurements showed that stomatal closure was initiated at Psi(l) values of -1.21, -1.36, -1.74 and -1.86 MPa along the height gradient, which was highly correlated with Psi(l) values at loss of K(leaf). Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that relative abundances of embolized tracheids in the central vein increased with increasing leaf water stress. Leaf embolism appeared to be coupled to changes in g(s) and might perform a vital function in stomatal regulation of plant water status and water transport in conifers. The observed trends in g(s) and K(leaf) in response to changes in Psi(l) along a height gradient suggest that the foliage at the tops of tall trees is capable of maintaining stomatal conductance at more negative Psi(l). This adaptation may allow taller trees to continue to photosynthesize during periods of greater water stress.  相似文献

Effects of nitrogen (N) supply on the limiting step of CO(2) assimilation rate (A) at 380 μmol mol(-1) CO(2) concentration (A(380) ) at several leaf temperatures were studied in several crops, since N nutrition alters N allocation between photosynthetic components. Contents of leaf N, ribulose 1·5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and cytochrome f (cyt f) increased with increasing N supply, but the cyt f/Rubisco ratio decreased. Large leaf N content was linked to a high stomatal (g(s) ) and mesophyll conductance (g(m) ), but resulted in a lower intercellular (C(i) ) and chloroplast CO(2) concentration (C(c) ) because the increase in g(s) and g(m) was insufficient to compensate for change in A(380) . The A-C(c) response was used to estimate the maximum rate of RuBP carboxylation (V(cmax) ) and chloroplast electron transport (J(max) ). The J(max) /V(cmax) ratio decreased with reductions in leaf N content, which was consistent with the results of the cyt f/Rubisco ratio. Analysis using the C(3) photosynthesis model indicated that A(380) tended to be limited by RuBP carboxylation in plants grown at low N concentration, whereas it was limited by RuBP regeneration in plants grown at high N concentration. We conclude that the limiting step of A(380) depends on leaf N content and is mainly determined by N partitioning between Rubisco and electron transport components.  相似文献

Advanced lines of Pima cotton ( Gossypium barbadense L.) bred for higher yield potential and heat resistance have higher stomata conductance and smaller leaf areas than those of obsolete lines. In controlled experiments, five commercial lines of Pima cotton having increasing lint yield and heat resistance showed a gradient of increasing stomatal conductance and decreasing leaf size. In field experiments, heat-sensitive, low yield Pima lines showed a lower stomatal conductance than high yielding, advanced lines. This indicates that selection for high yield potential and heat resistance has imposed a selection pressure for higher stomatal conductance and smaller leaf areas. The higher stomatal conductance and smaller leaf area in the advanced lines resulted in a lower leaf temperature in both controlled environments and in the field. The largest leaf temperature differences between obsolete and advanced lines were observed in the afternoon. These differences coincided with the largest differences in stomatal conductance and the highest air temperatures. Measurements of stomatal conductance and leaf temperature in field-grown progeny from a cross between the advanced line, Pima S-6. and the obsolete line, Pima 32, showed that genetically determined differences in stomatal conductance resulted in corresponding differences in leaf temperature. None of the altered physiological traits were selected for in the breeding program, indicating that selection for the desired agronomic traits imposed selection pressures on the altered physiological traits. The increases in stomatal conductance and decreases in leaf area could represent an integrated response to selection pressures on enhanced evaporative cooling, ensuing from selection for heat resistance.  相似文献

Aims With a close association with plant water availability, foliar δ 13 C had been investigated extensively in alpine regions; however, foliar δ 15 N has rarely been concurrently used as an indicator of plant nitrogen availability. Due to the positive correlations between leaf nitrogen content and foliar δ 13 C and δ 15 N found in previous studies, we expected that they should show consistent patterns along an altitudinal gradient. Methods To test our hypothesis, we measured foliar δ 13 C and δ 15 N in conjunction with multiple key leaf functional traits of Quercus aquifolioides, a dominant species of alpine forest on the eastern slopes of the Sygera Mountains, southeastern Tibetan Plateau from 2500 to 3800 m.Important findings (i) Contrary to our hypothesis, foliar δ 13 C exhibited a significant positive linear relationship with altitude; in contrast, foliar δ 15 N initially increased and subsequently decreased with altitude, the change in trend occurring around 3300 m. (ii) Our analyses indicated that leaf internal resistance and stomatal conductance, rather than photosynthetic capacity indicated by leaf N concentration, apparently explained the altitudinal variation in foliar δ 13 C, while differences in foliar δ 15 N were likely the result of soil N availability. (iii) Principal component analysis revealed a clear association between δ 13 C and a tradeoff between water loss and carbon gain, indicated by traits related to gas exchange such as leaf thickness, density, stomatal properties. In contrast, the second axis was associated with δ 15 N and nitrogen acquisition strategy in Q. aquifolioides across its altitudinal distribution, represented by traits related to nitrogen concentration and stomata per gram of leaf nitrogen.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Rapid leaf area expansion is a desirable trait in the early growth stages of cereal crops grown in low-rainfall areas. In this study, the traits associated with inherent variation in early leaf area expansion rates have been investigated in two wheat species (Triticum aestivum and T. durum) and three of its wild relatives (Aegilops umbellulata, A. caudata and A. tauschii) to find out whether the Aegilops species have a faster leaf area expansion in their early developmental stage than some of the current wheat species. METHODS: Growth of individual leaves, biomass allocation, and gas exchange were measured on hydroponically grown plants for 4 weeks. KEY RESULTS: Leaf elongation rate (LER) was strongly and positively correlated with leaf width but not with leaf elongation duration (LED). The species with more rapidly elongating leaves showed a faster increase with leaf position in LER, leaf width and leaf area, higher relative leaf area expansion rates, and more biomass allocation to leaf sheaths and less to roots. No differences in leaf appearance rate were found amongst the species. CONCLUSIONS: Aegilops tauschii was the only wild species with rapid leaf expansion rates similar to those of wheat, and it achieved the highest photosynthetic rates, making it an interesting species for further study.  相似文献

Poplar genotypes differ in transpiration efficiency (TE) at leaf and whole‐plant level under similar conditions. We tested whether atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) affected TE to the same extent across genotypes. Six Populus nigra genotypes were grown under two VPD. We recorded (1) 13C content in soluble sugars; (2) 18O enrichment in leaf water; (3) leaf‐level gas exchange; and (4) whole‐plant biomass accumulation and water use. Whole‐plant and intrinsic leaf TE and 13C content in soluble sugars differed significantly among genotypes. Stomatal conductance contributed more to these differences than net CO2 assimilation rate. VPD increased water use and reduced whole‐plant TE. It increased intrinsic leaf‐level TE due to a decline in stomatal conductance. It also promoted higher 18O enrichment in leaf water. VPD had no genotype‐specific effect. We detected a deviation in the relationship between 13C in leaf sugars and 13C predicted from gas exchange and the standard discrimination model. This may be partly due to genotypic differences in mesophyll conductance, and to its lack of sensitivity to VPD. Leaf‐level 13C discrimination was a powerful predictor of the genetic variability of whole‐plant TE irrespective of VPD during growth.  相似文献

Success of improving the salt tolerance of genotypes requires effective and reliable screening traits in breeding programs. The objective was to assess the suitability of various physiological traits to screen wheat genotypes for salt tolerance.Thirteen wheat genotypes from Egypt,Germany,Australia and India were grown in soil with two salinity levels(control and150mmol/L NaCl)in a greenhouse. The physiological traits(ion contents in leaves and stems,i.e.Na~ ,Cl~-,K~ ,Ca~(2 )),theratios of K~ /Na~ and Ca~ /Na~ in the leaves and stems, net photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, chlorophyll content(SPAD value),and leaf water relations, were measured at different growth stages. The physiologicaltraits except for Na~ and Cl~-in stems and the leaf transpiration rate at 150 mmol/L NaCI showed a significant genotypicvariation, indicating that the traits that have a significant genotypic variation may be possibly used as screening criteria.According to the analysis of linear regression of the scores of the physiological traits against those of grain yield, however, the physiological traits of Ca~(2 )and Ca~(2 )/Na~ at 45 d and final harvest with the greatest genotypic variation were ranked atthe top. From a practical and economic point of view,SPAD value should be considered to be used as screening criteriaand/or there is a need to develop a quick and practical approach to determine Ca~(2 )in plant tissues.  相似文献

Understanding the distribution of gas exchange within a plant is a prerequisite for scaling up from leaves to canopies. We evaluated whether leaf traits were reliable predictors of the effects of leaf ageing and leaf irradiance on leaf photosynthetic capacity (V(cmax) , J(max) ) in field-grown vines (Vitis vinifera L). Simultaneously, we measured gas exchange, leaf mass per area (LMA) and nitrogen content (N(m) ) of leaves at different positions within the canopy and at different phenological stages. Daily mean leaf irradiance cumulated over 10 d (PPFD(10) ) was obtained by 3D modelling of the canopy structure. N(m) decreased over the season in parallel to leaf ageing while LMA was mainly affected by leaf position. PPFD(10) explained 66, 28 and 73% of the variation of LMA, N(m) and nitrogen content per area (N(a) ), respectively. Nitrogen content per unit area (N(a) = LMA × N(m) ) was the best predictor of the intra-canopy variability of leaf photosynthetic capacity. Finally, we developed a classical photosynthesis-stomatal conductance submodel and by introducing N(a) as an input, the model accurately simulated the daily pattern of gas exchange for leaves at different positions in the canopy and at different phenological stages during the season.  相似文献

Thirteen wheat genotypes from Egypt, Germany, Australia and India were grown in soil with two salinity levels (control and 150 mmol/L NaCI) in a greenhouse. The physiological traits (ion contents in leaves and stems, i.e. Na^+, Cl^-, K^+, Ca^2+), the ratios of K^+/Na^+ and Ca^+/Na^+ in the leaves and stems, net photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, chlorophyll content (SPAD value), and leaf water relations, were measured at different growth stages. The physiological traits except for Na^+ and Cl^- in stems and the leaf transpiration rate at 150 mmol/L NaCI showed a significant genotypic variation, indicating that the traits that have a significant genotypic variation may be possibly used as screening criteria. Cultivar differences in leaf photosynthesis of rice bred in Japan   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
The grain yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.), as well as of other cereal crops, is limited to a large extent, by the supply of photosynthates produced during grain filling period. In this study, flag leaf photosynthesis (LPS) after heading was compared among 32 cultivars bred during the past century in Japan, to determine if the improvement of LPS has occurred with the breeding advance of high yielding cultivars. Measurement of LPS was made for 5 consecutive years in the paddy field, on the flag leaf of the main stem, at heading (LPS-0), and 2 weeks (LPS-2) and 4 weeks (LPS-4) after heading. LPS decreased with advance of leaf senescence from LPS-0 to LPS-2, and then to LPS-4. However, if nitrogen was top-dressed at the heading time, high LPS-2 was maintained, particularly in the newer cultivars. A significant positive correlation between LPS and the released year of cultivar was found at LPS-2, especially in the nitrogen top-dressed plot, but not at LPS-0 or LPS-4. Cultivar difference in LPS of the senescing leaves were not stable through the different years, whereas LPS-0 was stable over years, suggesting that the LPS in the senescent leaf is susceptible to the environmental variation due to the effects on leaf senescence. Cultivar difference in LPS at any stage was closely associated with mesophyll conductance to CO2, and stomatal conductance was also associated with cultivar difference in such a high LPS as LPS-0 and nitrogen top-dressed LPS-2. Significant correlation between LPS and specific leaf weight was not observed at any stage of the flag leaf.Abbreviations CV coefficient of variation - gm mesophyll conductance - gs stomatal conductance - LPS apparent photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area (leaf photosynthesis) - LPS-0 LPS at heading - LPS-2 LPS at active grain filling - LPS-4 LPS at maturity of grain - NT non-top dressed plot - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - rm mesophyll resistance - rs stomatal diffusion resistance against CO2 - rs(H2O) stomatal diffusion resistance against H2O - RuBisCO ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase - SLW specific leaf weight - TD nitrogen top-dressed plot  相似文献
