The aim of this study was to investigate when adult distribution patterns are established in the barnacles Chthamalus stellatus and C. montagui. Adult ‘zones’ were identified by analysing field counts of both species at mid and upper shore heights. Monthly collections of cyprids, < 1 month old metamorphs and recruits (all metamorphosed individuals older than approximately 1 month) were made for C. stellatus and C. montagui in natural barnacle beds at six shores in SW Ireland. This was carried out over one year in 1996/1997, using a hierarchical sampling design. Abundance of total recruits (0-3 months old) was compared between adult zones after the main settlement season had ended. In addition, scales of variability in 0-3 month recruitment into adult zones were compared between the species at two scales: shores (1000s of metres) and sites within shores (10s of metres). Older recruits of each species, up to 11 months of age, were also compared between adult zones. The majority of settlement (measured as attached cyprids) occurred between August and October 1996. In October, there was no effect of adult zone on the abundance of total (0-3 month) recruitment up to that point in either species. Despite this homogeneity in recruitment between adult zones, significant spatial variation was found in 0-3 month recruits of both species at both of the scales examined. In C. stellatus the amount of variation associated with the larger scale (shore) was more than twice that of sites or of the residual variation (replicates within sites). 0-3 month recruitment in C. montagui was also most variable at the scale of shores but the residual variability (between replicates within site) was of similar magnitude to that of shores. Variability in 0-3 month C. montagui recruitment was relatively low at the scale of sites. There was a small but consistent input of recruits to adult zones over 9 months of the year, complicating the assessment of when adult patterns were set-up in these species. By June 1997, characteristic patterns of adult dominance had been established at all shores. Settlement had completely ceased by this time and individual barnacles were potentially 11 months old. Neither settlement nor early recruitment are significant in determining adult zonation patterns in these species. Instead, differential mortality patterns in individuals up to the age of 11 months are implicated in determining patterns of distribution of both species. 相似文献

Chthamalus montagui and Chthamalus stellatus are abundant barnacles in western Europe. Tidal settlement of Chthamalus in SW Ireland and SW Portugal was studied in relation to a night and day factor and at different temporal (dates) and spatial (shores and sites) scales. Based on the identifiable cyprids and metamorphs, Chthamalus settlement in SW Ireland was comprised mainly of C. stellatus but was composed of C. montagui only in SW Portugal. In SW Ireland and SW Portugal, settlement rates of Chthamalus (mean number of settlers per 25 cm2±S.E.) were higher after one day tidal cycle (597±158.7 in SW Ireland, 144±23.6 in SW Portugal) than one night tidal cycle (55±12.1 in SW Ireland, 13±2.2 in SW Portugal), but significant differences were only detected in SW Portugal. Different models were proposed for explaining this pattern related to night and day variability of the physical processes responsible for transporting cyprids to shore (1), and/or of pre-settlement behaviour (2) and/or of settlement behaviour of cyprids (3).Spatial patterns of tidal settlement of both species or at both locations seem similar with small scale variability (between sites, 5 to 30 m apart) in settlement of Chthamalus being the only spatial scale at which variability was detected in both locations. The composition of Chthamalus cohorts settling during one tidal cycle differed considerably between locations/species: settlers of C. stellatus were mainly cyprids; settlers of C. montagui during the day (when most settlement occurred) were essentially metamorphs. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation in the recruitment of the intertidal barnacle Chthamalus malayensis was examined over one year (September 2003-August 2004) on the equatorial shores of southern Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. A nested sampling design was applied for the first time on these shores, over three spatial scales - hundreds of kilometres, kilometres to tens of kilometres and tens of metres - and temporal variation was determined through monthly sampling of recruits. Shores within 2° north of the equator on the East and West coasts of southern Peninsular Malaysia and the southern coast of Singapore were selected as study sites. Generally, all three coasts recruited throughout the year, with varying intensities. There was a clear regional pattern, where the largest number of recruits was found on the East Coast of Malaysia, and the least in Singapore. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) showed that variability occurred on the smallest scale, but only in nine of the twelve months examined, consequently resulting in significant temporal and spatial interaction. Calculated variance components indicated that small-scale variation accounted for most of the overall variability. The potential causes of the spatial and temporal patterns of C. malayensis recruitment, and implications on tropical-temperate comparisons will be discussed. 相似文献

Discontinuities in distribution of sessile species due to changes in available habitat have rarely been investigated. In the English Channel, soft sedimentary rocks including chalk could potentially present a barrier to eastward range extension of the southern barnacle Chthamalus montagui. To test the effect of rock type on recruitment and mortality, prepared settlement tiles of four calcareous rocks that form important platforms close to existing limits of distribution were fixed to the shore at a site in south-west England, known to have consistently high larval settlement. Prior to fixation, the roughness parameter “Ra” and Potential Settlement Sites (PSS) index was measured. Recruitment was monitored photographically on four occasions during the settlement season and subsequent mortality for 7 months after the settlement season. By the end of the settlement season, recruitment on the hard Kimmeridge Cementstone was significantly less than on the other three rock types and attributed to low surface roughness and fewest Potential Settlement Sites (PSS), yet only 28% of variance could be attributed to PSS. Post-recruitment mortality was more variable, however after 7 months there were significant differences between rock types. Simultaneous surveys of post-recruitment mortality in natural populations showed that although recruitment on chalk can potentially be high, survivorship was relatively low. Thus rock type could be influential in setting species geographical limits. 相似文献

Reproduction in Chthamalus montagui Southward and Chthamalus stellatus (Poli) has been compared along gradients of wave exposure and tidal height. The proportion of barnacles carrying egg masses was greatest at low shore levels in both species, although the difference between levels was more pronounced in C. stellatus. Both species were found to breed between the beginning of May and the end of September. The mean number of broods released per season in both species ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 at high shore levels, from 2.2 to 3.2 at mid shore levels, and from 2.6 to 4.4 at low shore levels. C. stellatus predominated low on the shore at an intermediately exposed site and on the mid and low shore at the most exposed site. At these places it produced more broods per year than C. montagui. Development of the embryos of the two species was complete after 3 wk in vivo at 15°C. Eggs containing embryos of C. stellatus were larger than those of C. montagui, and within each species, larger barnacles produced larger eggs. Egg masses of C. stellanus included more eggs than those of C. montagui. Brood size in both species was greatest in shelter and least in exposure. Egg production was, however, similar in the two species when adjusted for differences in body mass. Egg production per unit body mass was greatest at an intermediately exposed site. 相似文献

Population dynamics of many intertidal organisms are strongly affected by the abundance and distribution of larvae arriving on the shore. In particular, not only absolute numbers of settlers but also the degree of synchronisation of settlement can have a strong influence on whether density-dependent or density-independent processes shape adult shape populations. Temporal variation in rates of settlement and recruitment of the mussel Perna perna on the south coast of South Africa was investigated using a nested spatial design at different temporal scales. Variability in settlement at spring tides was examined at two temporal scales: lunar (to investigate the effect of state of the moon on settlement) and tidal (to investigate the influence of state of the tide on mussel settlement). Recruitment over neap tides was examined at one temporal scale, fortnight (to investigate the effect of date on mussel recruitment).Strong temporal variation was evident for both settlement and recruitment, but not at all time scales. Distinct peaks of settler/recruit abundance were observed during the lunar and neap tide studies. Recruitment intensity differed over the course of the year, and pulsing of recruitment was generally synchronised among locations. However, the strength of pulsing differed dramatically among locations, giving a significant interaction between fortnight and location. The finest temporal scale, investigated in the tidal study, did not reveal a significant effect of the state of the tide on settlement. The state of the moon (new or full) was not significant as a main factor (p = 0.052), although generally more settlers arrived on the shore during new moon. Phase of the moon appeared to have an effect on settler abundances, but only when and where densities were high. 相似文献

Juvenile and adult sporophytes of Ecklonia radiata were counted on in-shore and off-shore reefs at Marmion (Perth, Western Australia), across spatial scales of kilometres, 10s of metres and metres. The position on in-shore reefs vs. off-shore reefs did not influence recruit and adult kelp density. There was considerable site-to-site (kilometres) variation in densities of recruits but not adults. The majority of variation in both recruit and adult densities was found between quadrats separated by a few metres. There was no relationship between abundance of recruits and abundance of adult sporophytes at any of the spatial levels of investigation, suggesting a decoupling of recruitment and canopy processes. The results emphasise the patchy nature of kelp canopy distribution and suggest that relatively small-scale processes, acting on scales of a few metres, are of primary importance in generating heterogeneity in the canopy of these kelps. 相似文献

We investigated interactions between two dominant invertebrate species of intertidal soft-sediment environments of the northwest Atlantic, the mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta and the burrowing amphipod Corophium volutator, on a mudflat of the upper Bay of Fundy, Canada. Distribution of I. obsoleta on the mudflat was highly patchy and negatively correlated with density of C. volutator. Manipulation of snail density in cages showed that I. obsoleta influences C. volutator; specifically, increasing density of snails reduced density, increased patchiness in distribution, decreased recapture rates and decreased immigration of C. volutator. Ilyanassa obsoleta seems to be affecting C. volutator through an influence on survival rate and emigration rate, although temporal variation in these effects was observed. Given that both I. obsoleta and C. volutator show a preference for tide pools, an important microhabitat on mudflats, snails might have a profound impact on C. volutator population dynamics. 相似文献

Two co-occurring chthamalid barnacle species occur on the rocky shores of continental Portugal: Chthamalus stellatus (Poli) and Chthamalus montaguiSouthward. In the present study, patterns of distribution and abundance (density and percentage cover), both vertically (tidal level) and horizontally (wave action), were studied for each species on headlands (more wave action) and not on headlands (less wave action) and at two spatial scales (shore and site) and three tidal levels (low, mid and upper). Chthamalus montagui was significantly more abundant than C. stellatus in both degrees of wave action and at all tidal levels. Despite this great difference in abundance and considering each species individually, C. montagui was more abundant at mid tide-level, while C. stellatus was more abundant at the low tide-level, and C. montagui was less abundant on headlands, while C. stellatus was more abundant on headlands. Small-scale variability (between sites, tens of meters) of abundance of each species was detected, while differences on a larger scale (between shores, tens of kilometres) were not significant. 相似文献

The rocky intertidal has been a model system for experimentally testing hypotheses regarding the factors that structure natural communities. Many ecologists have proposed that changes in the intensity of recruitment of individuals into a community should influence community structure. Past work investigating this hypothesis has primarily been surveys of recruitment and community structure across large spatial scales. Surprisingly, no researchers to date have manipulated recruitment into a rocky intertidal community to assess the response of interactions of the whole community to variation in recruitment intensity. We manipulated the densities of Balanus glandula and Chthamalus spp. recruits across a four-fold difference at two sites spanning the Monterey Bay, California, USA, to experimentally test if differences in recruitment intensity influenced initial changes in community composition and if these changes persisted through time. The results of this work indicate that differences in recruitment influence community composition initially, but that these changes can be short-lived. 相似文献

Although possibly indigenous to Nova Scotia, the ascidian Ciona intestinalis has become a problem for local mussel aquaculturists. The local population ecology of the ascidian was studied by recording the depth, distribution, and timing of recruitment of C. intestinalis at four different locations (high wave exposure, low wave exposure, recently fallowed, and historically heavily fouled with tunicates) on a mussel farm at Indian Point, Nova Scotia. Animals were collected weekly from 11 collectors deployed at a depth of 4.5 m over two seasons (June-December 2003 and 2004). Recruitment occurred in two peaks during both seasons: the first peak lasted from late June to late July while the second peak lasted from early September to mid-November. Recruitment was highest in the sheltered and historically fouled location, intermediate in the fallowed site, and lowest in the site with highest wave exposure. Collectors were also deployed at different depths. Recruitment was highest at 4.5 m and to a lesser extent at 8.5 m. Little recruitment was seen at the surface (0.5 m) or in deeper water (12.5 and 16.5 m), except during the second peak in 2004. Overall, these results seem to indicate an abbreviated larval dispersal phase with young recruits settling very close to the pool of adults located on the mussel lines. 相似文献

The barnacle Balanus glandula was introduced in Argentina in the 1970s, and today it dominates the high intertidal level in most Argentinean rocky shores. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the type of substrata and intertidal height on a population of Balanus glandula by conducting field surveys and one-year field experiments in which we combined different substrata (hardness: hard and soft, and texture: smooth and rough) at two intertidal heights (mid and high). In natural populations, the highest density of adults and recruits occurred on soft-rough substratum and in the high intertidal. The different textures were important only on the soft substrata and high intertidal, and the density of barnacles of the soft-rough substrata was higher than soft and smooth ones. The most suitable experimental substratum was the soft-rough of the high intertidal, which had the highest recruitment, survival and final density of barnacles at the end of the experiment. In contrast, the hard and smooth of the high and middle intertidal were the least suitable in all cases. Although the recruitment of B. glandula occurred throughout the year, it was higher in the high intertidal, and it showed a recruitment peak in the winter and a second in the summer. While most studies on this barnacle investigated the effects of granite or other volcanic hard substrata, our study also focused on soft substrata. The effects of soft substrata are particularly important because soft sedimentary rocks characterise the southern Atlantic coast of South America and the presence of soft rocks appears to optimize the success of Balanus glandula. 相似文献

Successful fisheries management is underpinned by an understanding of the processes that underlie the population dynamics of exploited stocks. This study considered the effects of experimental harvesting on recruitment of Mytilus galloprovincialis along the west coast of South Africa, where harvesting of this alien species is being contemplated. In particular, the role of settlement habitat availability in the form of adult mussels was analysed. To track the effects of a spectrum of harvesting intensities, five treatments were implemented: F = 0 (i.e. a control), F = 0.3, F = 0.6, F = 0.9 and F = 1. At these harvesting intensities 0%, 30%, 60%, 90% or 100% of mussel biomass was removed respectively at the outset of the experiment. A significant negative exponential relationship (p < 0.01) was found between M. galloprovincialis recruit density and harvesting intensity, with intensities greater than F = 0.3 dramatically reducing recruitment. This pattern was recorded throughout the intertidal zone and remained temporally constant over 2 years. Significant positive linear relationships (p < 0.01) between recruit density and adult mussel biomass or density indicate a strong correlation between availability of settlement habitat and recruitment. It is likely that the high recruit density recorded at low harvesting intensities (2000-20 000 per 0.01 m2) exceeds the level required for population maintenance. However, if settlement habitat is eliminated or significantly reduced, as was achieved by F = 0.3 or above, recruitment may become limiting. Thus, to protect stock replenishment, harvesting of M. galloprovincialis in this region should take place at intensities less than F = 0.3. 相似文献

In its freshwater amphipod host Gammarus duebeni celticus, the microsporidian parasite Pleistophora mulleri showed 23% transmission efficiency when uninfected individuals were fed infected tissue, but 0% transmission by water-borne and coprophagous routes. Cannibalism between unparasitised and parasitised individuals was significantly in favour of the former (37% compared to 0%). In addition, cannibalism between parasitised individuals was significantly higher than between unparasitised individuals (27% compared to 0%). Thus, parasitised individuals were more likely to be cannibalised by both unparasitised and parasitised individuals. We discuss the conflicting selective forces within this host/parasite relationship, the implications of parasite mediated cannibalism for host population structure and the impacts this may have on the wider aquatic community. 相似文献

Effects of two presumably dominant competitors, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis and the barnacle Balanus improvisus on recruitment, population dynamics and community structure on hard substrata were experimentally investigated in the subtidal Kiel Fjord, Western Baltic. The hypothesis that blue mussels and/or barnacles are local dominants and strongly influence succession and community structure was tested by monitoring succession in the presence and absence of simulated predation on either or both species. Manipulations included blue mussel removal, barnacle removal, combined blue mussel and barnacle removal, as well as a control treatment for natural (non-manipulated) succession. In the second part of the experiment, recovery from the treatments was monitored over 1 year.During the manipulative phase of the experiment, blue mussels had a negative effect on recruitment of species, whereas barnacles had no significant effect. Even so, a negative synergistic effect of blue mussels and barnacles was detected. Calculation of species richness and diversity H′ (Shannon Index) showed a negative synergistic effect of blue mussels and barnacles on community structure. Additionally, diversity H′ was negatively affected by the dominant competitor M. edulis. These effects were also detectable in the ANOSIM-Analysis. The non-manipulative phase of the experiment brought about a drastic loss of diversity and species richness. Blue mussels dominated all four communities. Barnacles were the only other species still being able to coexist with mussels. Effects of simulated predation disappeared fast. Thus, in the absence of predation on blue mussels, M. edulis within a few months dominates available space, and diversity of the benthic community is low. In contrast, when mussel dominance is controlled by specific predators, more species may persist and diversity remains high. 相似文献

The ultrastructure of septa and septum-associated septal pore caps are important taxonomic markers in the Agaricomycotina (Basidiomycota, Fungi). The septal pore caps covering the typical basidiomycetous dolipore septum are divided into three main phenotypically recognized morphotypes: vesicular-tubular (including the vesicular, sacculate, tubular, ampulliform, and globular morphotypes), imperforate, and perforate. Until recently, the septal pore cap-type reflected the higher-order relationships within the Agaricomycotina. However, the new classification of Fungi resulted in many changes including revision of existing and addition of new orders. Therefore, the septal pore cap ultrastructure of more than 325 species as reported in literature was related to this new classification. In addition, the septal pore cap ultrastructures of Rickenella fibula and Cantharellus formosus were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Both fungi have dolipore septa associated with perforate septal pore caps. These results combined with data from the literature show that the septal pore cap-type within orders of the Agaricomycotina is generally monomorphic, except for the Cantharellales and Hymenochaetales. It appears from the fungal phylogeny combined with the septal pore cap ultrastructure that the vesicular-tubular and the imperforate type both may have arisen from endoplasmic reticulum. Thereafter, the imperforate type eventually gave rise to the perforate septal pore cap-type. 相似文献

Isoenzyme electrophoresis was employed to examine the relationships of 21 individuals representing four populations of Astragalus gossypinus complex as well as 20 individuals representing five populations of Astragalus persicus complex. A total of 27 bands from three enzyme systems (superoxide dismutase, esterase, and peroxidase) were obtained. UPGMA clustering method resulted in two distinct clusters for different populations corresponding to the two species complexes analysed. In both species, populations distributed on Alborz mountain range in northern Iran form separated clusters from those distributed on Zagros mountain range in the West. The results also show that both species complexes exhibit a high diversity based on Shannon–Weaver diversity index (H′) compared with other species of Astragalus reported previously. The mean number of bands per each presumed isoenzyme ranges from 2.14 to 3.57. The value of Euclidean distance ranges from 1.251 to 3.152. Our data suggest that both species should be circumscribed wider than that treated by most taxonomists, and several taxonomic names should be reduced under synonymy of the corresponding species. 相似文献

The identification of the conventionally accepted species of Clavulina (Cantharellales, Basidiomycota) in Europe (Clavulina amethystina, Clavulina cinerea, Clavulina cristata, and Clavulina rugosa) is often difficult and many specimens are not straightforwardly assignable to any of those four species, which is why some authors have questioned their identity. In order to assess the status of those species, a morphological examination was combined with the molecular analysis of the ITS region. The same six major clades were obtained in the Bayesian and parsimony phylogenetic analyses, and all six clades were well-supported at least by one of the analyses. Morphological characters, such as the overall branching pattern, the presence and intensity of grey colour, the cristation of the apices, and basidiospore size and shape were to various extents correlated with the phylogenetic signal obtained from the ITS region. The congruence between the molecular analyses and morphology, rather than geographical origin, suggests the existence of several species that can be delimited using a combined phylogenetic and morphological species recognition. The analyses revealed that C. cristata and C. rugosa are well-delimited species. In contrast, more than one taxa could be subsumed under the names C. amethystina and C. cinerea, the taxonomical complexity of which is discussed. The ITS region is proved to be adequate to separate phylogenetic species of Clavulina. 相似文献

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) are associated with strictly entomochoric and mutualistic fungi. We studied the mycobiota associated with Scolytodes unipunctatus, ambrosia beetles that infest Cecropia trees in Central America. Isolates were characterized using morphology and rDNA sequences (ITS region, LSU, and SSU rDNA). Four species are described here: Raffaelea scolytodis sp. nov. (Ophiostomatales), Gondwanamyces scolytodis sp. nov., Custingophora cecropiae sp. nov., and Graphium sp. (Microascales). The genus Custingophora is emended to include Knoxdaviesia anamorphs of Gondwanamyces based on uniformity of DNA sequences and phenotype. 相似文献
