Knowledge on selectivity is considered essential for an adequate management of the trawl fishery. This paper compares the selectivity of conventionally used codends of 44 mm diamond mesh, 40 mm square, and hexagonal mesh for Atlantic horse mackerel, European hake and greater forkbeard in the eastern Mediterranean. Data were collected using the covered codend method and analyzed using the logistic equation with the maximum likelihood method. Mean selection curves were analyzed and compared using the between-haul variations model. The mean L 50 v alues of diamond, square and hexagonal mesh codends are 14.7, 15.9 and 17.1 cm total length (TL) for horse mackerel, 10.4, 14.4 and 11.0 cm TL for hake and 12.2, 15.8 and 12.7 cm TL for greater forkbeard, respectively. For horse mackerel, the differences among the codends are statistically significant (P   <   0.05); however, the L 50 values for all three meshes are higher than the minimum landing size (13 cm TL). For hake and greater forkbeard, the L 50 value for the square mesh codend is significantly different from the values for diamond and hexagonal meshes (P   <   0.01), whereas there is no significant difference between diamond and hexagonal meshes (P   >   0.05). Regardless of the mesh shape, L 50 values were substantially lower than the minimum landing size or size at first maturity for hake and greater forkbeard. To enable more effective solutions, research on species-selective trawls is required for the Mediterranean demersal trawl fishery.  相似文献

There are two factors affecting long-term fluctuation of planktotrophic pelagic fish: environmental fluctuation and interspecific competition. Long-term catch data of planktotrophic pelagic fishes in Japan suggest that the chub mackerel (species B) was replaced by the sardine (A), A was replaced by the anchovy, Pacific saury and horse mackerel (Group C), and species in group C were replaced by species B. If species A defeats B, B defeats C, and C defeats A in interspecific competitive ability, then the abundance of these three groups fluctuate forever and dominate in the same order. We call this cyclic advantage hypothesis for species replacement. In this model, environmental fluctuation affects the species replacement as a trigger. Environmental fluctuation does not determine the next dominant species but greatly affects when the next replacement occurs.  相似文献

The diet of blue whiting, hake, horse mackerel and mackerel off Portugal   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper deals with the diets of blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou (Risso 1810), hake Merluccius merluccius (L. 1758), horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus (L. 1758), and mackerel Scomber scombrus (L. 1758) off Portugal and explores variations in fish length, water depth, latitude and season. All four species feed on fish; however, hake and mackerel are the first and second most important predators, respectively, blue whiting being the most important fish prey for both species. The diets of blue whiting and horse mackerel are composed mainly of crustaceans. Diet variations according to predator fish size are more important than either latitude or depth. In the diets of blue whiting, hake and horse mackerel, prey importance increases with predator size. For blue whiting and horse mackerel, diet variations with fish length and water depth are correlated: small fish are closely associated with coastal areas where they feed on copepods and decapod larvae. Seasonality in the diet is apparent for blue whiting, hake and mackerel. For blue whiting, the decapod Pasiphaea sivado is the most important prey in summer and autumn, being replaced by the euphausid Meganyctiphanes norvegica in winter. In the diet of hake, seasonality was characterised by the major importance of Macroramphosus scolopax in autumn, whereas the diet of mackerel consisted of zooplankton in summer, fish and decapods in autumn and decapod larvae in winter. Seasonal changes in the diet of horse mackerel correspond to a higher diversity of prey in autumn compared to other seasons (although euphausids are the main prey in all seasons). Seasonality in feeding activity is not as marked for the other species as it is for horse mackerel; the percentage of empty stomachs of horse mackerel is greatest in winter, when spawning takes place at the Portuguese coast.  相似文献

Three indicators quantifying interactions between species are developed for an upwelling system to provide useful measures for the comparison of marine ecosystem structure and function. Small pelagic fish are dominant in upwelling systems, and by definition, they are pivotal in a wasp-waist upwelling system. The indicator of interaction strength (IS) quantifies the effect that a change in biomass of one group has on abundance of other groups. The functional impact (FI) indicator quantifies the trophic impacts of species on their own and other functional groups or feeding guilds. The trophic replacement (TR) indicator quantifies the trophic similarity between a species that is removed from an ecosystem and other species in that ecosystem, i.e. it quantifies the ability of one group to trophically replace another. A trophic model of the southern Benguela ecosystem is used as an example for the application of the indicators. The strong similarities in trophic functioning of the southern Benguela ecosystem in the anchovy-dominated system of the 1980s, and the 1990s when there was a shift towards greater sardine abundance, are explained by the mutual trophic replacement abilities of anchovy and sardine. Differences between the proposed indicators and mixed trophic impact assessment are highlighted, mainly resulting from the static versus dynamic nature of the models upon which they are based. Trophic indicators such as those presented here, together with other kinds of ecosystem indicators, may assist in defining operational frameworks for ecosystem-based fisheries management.  相似文献

This research investigated effects of changing the diamond mesh size on codend selectivity in Mediterranean fisheries. The selectivity of a typical 50‐mm diamond knotless polyethylene (PE) codend used in the Turkish fishery in the Aegean Sea was measured for commercially important species, in particular hake (Merluccius merluccius), horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius) and John Dory (Zeus faber). Fishing trials were carried out on the commercial trawler ‘Hapulo?lu’ between 9 and 12 December 2006 using a modified trawl net. Selectivity data were collected by the covered codend method and analysed by means of a logistic equation (Maximum Likelihood Method). The mean selectivity curve was estimated from individual hauls, taking between‐haul variations into account. Mean mesh size of the codend was 49.4 mm as measured by digital calliper. Mean values for 50% retention length of hake and horse mackerel were estimated to be 11.4 and 15.6 cm total length; corresponding selection ranges were 4.1 and 5.5 cm respectively. The 50‐mm diamond mesh codend showed adequate selectivity compared to the minimum landing size (MLS) for horse mackerel, while for hake it selected specimens in a size range far lower than the MLS. No selectivity values could be determined for anglerfish or John Dory. To design a more selective codend for the Turkish demersal trawl fishery, not only mesh size regulations but also other codend characteristics and netting material properties must be urgently considered.  相似文献

Consumption of raw or thermally inadequately treated fishery products represents a public health risk, with the possibility of propagation of live Anisakis larvae, the causative agent of the zoonotic disease anisakidosis, or anisakiasis. We investigated the population dynamics of Anisakis spp. in commercially important fish—anchovies (Anisakis), sardines (Sardina pilchardus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius), whiting (Merlangius merlangus), chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus), and Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus)—captured in the main Adriatic Sea fishing ground. We observed a significant difference in the numbers of parasite larvae (1 to 32) in individual hosts and between species, with most fish showing high or very high Anisakis population indices. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that commercial fish in the Adriatic Sea are parasitized by Anisakis pegreffii (95.95%) and Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (4.05%). The genetic structure of A. pegreffii in demersal, pelagic, and top predator hosts was unstructured, and the highest frequency of haplotype sharing (n = 10) was between demersal and pelagic fish.  相似文献

To assess fish stocks boundaries and state, the tools of population genetics have been widely used, contributing to the evaluation of relevant parameters such as the identification of stock boundaries, the assessment of gene flow and the estimation of effective population size. Also, increasing evidences show that the monitoring of the genetic diversity level is a reliable method to check the status of fish stocks. However, genetics cannot answer all the questions. For example, in high gene flow species the genetic approach could have not enough resolution to identify stock limits, while the use of parasites as biological tags could provide insights into stock structure. Even better, the so-called holistic approach, applying simultaneously a wide range of complementary techniques, is the only one considered able to provide a reliable and complete picture of fish stocks and to address a sustainable exploitation of marine resources. The work will present some examples from multidisciplinary studies concerning commercially relevant species with different biological features: the demersal European hake (Merluccius merluccius), the small pelagic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) and the large pelagic swordfish (Xiphias gladius). In all these case studies merging genetic, parasitological and environmental data helped to reveal the real patterns of stocks structure.  相似文献

Feeding habits and gill raker morphology were examined for the three major planktivorous pelagic fishes, Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus , Pacific round herring Etrumeus teres and Japanese jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus , off the northern and western coasts of Kyushu, in the north‐eastern part of the East China Sea in the summer months of 2001. Using fishes in the same size range (80–140 mm, standard length), the stomach contents of the three fish species were compared. The diet of the Japanese anchovy mainly consisted of Oncaeidae copepods, while the diets of the Pacific round herring and Japanese jack mackerel were dominated by calanoid copepods at all stations. Comparisons between prey size in the stomach, zooplankton size in the water and gill raker morphology suggested that the stomach contents of the three species were characterized mainly by the difference in the feeding behaviour between Japanese anchovy (filter‐feeding) and the other two species (particulate‐feeding), rather than by the difference in the morphology of feeding apparatus only. It was concluded that behavioural adaptations in the feeding of these pelagic fishes brought about trophic partitioning to some degree in this pelagic ecosystem in summer. Although the diets of these three species overlapped to some extent, there was still little likelihood of competition between the Japanese anchovy and the other two species. The potential for competition between the Pacific round herring and the Japanese jack mackerel is discussed.  相似文献

Upwelling regions where nutrients are transported from deep to surface waters are among the most productive in the oceans. Although it is well known that the upwelling affects fishery production through bottom-up trophic cascading, it remains unexplored how temporal variation in its intensity alters overall trophic energy flows within a focal food web. In the present study, we demonstrate that inter-annual variation in the intensity of upwelling-like bottom intrusion alters food web properties in coastal waters of the Uwa Sea by focusing on the levels of δ13C and δ15N for a demersal fish predator, Acropoma japonicum. This approach integrates information on prey–predator interactions. In the season following a stratification period when pelagic productivity is limited by nutrient availability, A. japonicum showed lower levels of δ13C in years with high bottom intrusion intensity than in those with low intensity. One possible cause for this isotopic depletion is that the bottom intrusion-induced nutrient supply enhances pelagic productivity and consequently facilitates a foraging shift by A. japonicum from ordinary benthic prey to supplementary pelagic prey with a lower δ13C. In conclusion, the increased intensity of bottom intrusion results in coupling of two major trophic energy flows, pelagic and benthic food chains, through the demersal predator’s foraging shift.  相似文献

Chile imports from Spain 100s of metric tons of frozen sardine Sardina pilchardus fished in European oceans, which, with several other clupeids, are presumed susceptible to infection with viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV). The frozen sardines are directly introduced into the sea as bait to catch southern hake Merluccius australis in the same areas where wild and pen-raised salmonids are present. A simulation model was therefore developed to evaluate the potential risk of infection of wild Chilean southern hake with VHSV from imported bait. The model indicated that VHSV-susceptible fish species present in Chilean waters, like southern hake, are not at immediate risk of infection. However, sensitivity analyses showed that infectious doses at lower concentrations of VHSV combined with higher VHSV-prevalence import scenarios could likely result in VHSV infections of a moderate number of indigenous southern hake (> or =54 fish yr(-1)).  相似文献

Concentrations of 210Po, a natural alpha-radiating radionuclide were determined in various Black Sea fish species sampled along the coastal zone and in the bays of Sevastopol from May to June, 1999. Its value increased in the ecological row from the bottom through the demersal to pelagic region. Among the pelagic species, the Black Sea anchovy and sprat displayed the highest concentrations of 210P. In fishes, the liver was the 210Po accumulating organ.  相似文献

The diet of jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) off southern-central Chile is described to examine potential biases in the determination of their main prey. Specimens were collected from catches using different fishing gear (jigging, trawl and purse-seine), from July 2003 to January 2004, and from December 2005 to October 2006. The stomach contents were analyzed in terms of frequency of occurrence, number, and weight of prey items and the diet composition was analyzed using Detrended Correspondence Analysis. In the industrial purse-seine fleet for jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi), the dominant prey of D. gigas was T. murphyi. In the industrial mid-trawl fishery for Patagonian grenadier (Macruronus magellanicus), the dominant species in the diet of D. gigas was M. magellanicus. Similarly, Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi) was the main prey in the diet of D. gigas obtained in the industrial trawl fishery for Chilean hake; and, in both artisanal fisheries (purse-seine for small pelagics and jigging), small pelagic fish and D. gigas were the main prey in the stomach contents of D. gigas. Cannibalism in D. gigas varied between different fleets and probably is related to stress behavior during fishing. The Detrended Correspondence Analysis ordination showed that the main prey in the diet of D. gigas is associated with the target species of the respective fishery. Consequently, biases are associated with fishing gear, leading to an overestimate in the occurrence of the target species in the diet. We recommend analyzing samples from jigging taken at the same time and place where the trawl and purse-seine fleets are operating to avoid this problem, and the application of new tools like stable isotope, heavy metal, and fatty acid signature analyses.  相似文献

Background

In the southeastern tropical Pacific anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and sardine (Sardinops sagax) abundance have recently fluctuated on multidecadal scales and food and temperature have been proposed as the key parameters explaining these changes. However, ecological and paleoecological studies, and the fact that anchovies and sardines are favored differently in other regions, raise questions about the role of temperature. Here we investigate the role of oxygen in structuring fish populations in the Peruvian upwelling ecosystem that has evolved over anoxic conditions and is one of the world''s most productive ecosystems in terms of forage fish. This study is particularly relevant given that the distribution of oxygen in the ocean is changing with uncertain consequences.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A comprehensive data set is used to show how oxygen concentration and oxycline depth affect the abundance and distribution of pelagic fish. We show that the effects of oxygen on anchovy and sardine are opposite. Anchovy flourishes under relatively low oxygen conditions while sardine avoid periods/areas with low oxygen concentration and restricted habitat. Oxygen consumption, trophic structure and habitat compression play a fundamental role in fish dynamics in this important ecosystem.

Conclusions/Significance

For the ocean off Peru we suggest that a key process, the need to breathe, has been neglected previously. Inclusion of this missing piece allows the development of a comprehensive conceptual model of pelagic fish populations and change in an ocean ecosystem impacted by low oxygen. Should current trends in oxygen in the ocean continue similar effects may be evident in other coastal upwelling ecosystems.  相似文献

We performed a captive feeding experiment using California sea lions to assess biases associated with estimating pinniped diet using scats and spews. Sea lions were fed nine of their natural prey species: anchovy, sardine, Pacific mackerel, jack mackerel, hake, steelhead smolts, shortbelly rockfish, pink salmon, and market squid. Recovery percentages varied among prey species using otoliths and were improved for adult salmon and sardine using the all‐structure method. Numerical and graded length correction factors provided better estimates of number and size of prey consumed. Four models used to determine the proportions of prey species consumed by a sea lion population were tested. The all‐structure method and variable biomass reconstruction model, in conjunction with numerical and graded length correction factors, provided more accurate estimates than without. We provide numerical correction factors for all prey species, including correction factors for specific salmon bones: vertebrae, branchials, radials, teeth, gill rakers, and hypurals.  相似文献

The study aimed to evaluate sorting grids of 10 and 15 mm bar spacing specifically for separation of deep water rose shrimp, but including other species, in a Mediterranean multispecies demersal trawl fishery. Data were collected 15–25 October 2008 in S??ac?k Bay, Eastern Aegean Sea with the commercial trawler, ‘Hapulo?lu’, using a modified bottom trawl net. A total of 22 valid hauls (12 with 10 mm, ten with 15 mm grids) were obtained. The separation rate of anglerfish was highest, with 100% for weight and number in both codends among all species. Grid elimination of broadtail short‐fin squid showed differences between 95.3 and 80.3% in terms of weight, and 89.7 and 66.2% in terms of number for 10 and 15 mm, respectively. Separation ratios for hake, silver scabbard fish, and horse mackerel were between 96.3 and 100% in terms of weight, and 92.2 and 100% in terms of number in both codends. Shrimp separation was in total calculated as 60.8 and 37.0% by number, and 70.7 and 44.4% by weight in 10 and 15 mm bar spacing trawl grids, respectively, demonstrating that substantial improvement in species selectivity (deep water rose shrimp from others) is possible to achieve by adding sorting grids in the Mediterranean demersal trawl fishery. To optimize the overall selection performance in such fisheries, a variety of grid systems, bar spacings and materials as well as the economic consequences need to be evaluated.  相似文献

Feeding peculiarities of mass pelagic everyphagous fish Atlantic Chub mackerel Scomber colias, Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, Cunene horse mackerel Trachurus trecae from the Canary upwelling and the frontal zones of Mauritania were investigated. Atlantic Chub mackerel feeds mainly on fish inhabiting the zone of epipelagial, crustaceans and other organisms distributing in the sound scattering layers and also detritus and detritus–algal mixture. Cunene horse mackerel and Atlantic horse mackerel feed on mesopelagic fish and the organisms from the sound scattering layers. Feeding competition between these species does not occur due to non-concurrence of the places for concentration and nourishment. Correlation of food components, their occurrence and nourishment change for all species in conformity with fish sizes, physiological conditions and the season.  相似文献

Purpose

The purse seine fishery for sardine is the most important fishery in Portugal. The aim of the present study is to assess the environmental impacts of sardine fished by the Portuguese fleet and to analyse a number of variables such as vessel size and time scale. An additional goal was to incorporate fishery-specific impact categories in the case study.

Methods

Life Cycle Assessment methodology was applied, and data were collected from nine vessels, which represented around 10 % of the landings. Vessels were divided into two length categories, above and below 12 m, and data were obtained for the years 2005 to 2010. The study was limited to the fishing phase only. The standard impact categories included were energy use, global warming potential, eutrophication potential, acidification potential and ozone depletion potential. The fishery-specific impact categories were overfishing, overfishedness, lost potential yield, mean trophic level and the primary production required, and were quantified as much as possible.

Results and discussion

The landings from the data set were constituted mainly by sardine (91 %), and the remainders were other small pelagic species (e.g. horse mackerel). The most important input was the fuel, and both vessel categories had the same fuel consumption per catch 0.11 l/kg. Average greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprint) were 0.36 kg CO2 eq. per kilo sardine landed. The fuel use varied between years, and variability between months can be even higher. Fishing mortality has increased, and the spawning stock biomass has decreased resulting in consequential overfishing for 2010. A correlation between fuel use and stock biomass was not found, and the stock condition does not seem to directly influence the global warming potential in this fishery. Discards were primarily non-target small pelagic species, and there was also mortality of target species resulting from slipping. The seafloor impact was considered to be insignificant due to the fishing method.

Conclusions

The assessment of the Portuguese purse seine fishery resulted in no difference regarding fuel use between large and small vessels, but differences were found between years. The stock has declined, and it has produced below maximum sustainable yield. By-catch and discard data were missing but may be substantial. Even being difficult to quantify, fishery impact categories complement the environmental results with biological information and precaution is need in relation to the stock management. The sardine carbon footprint from Portuguese purse seine was lower than that of other commercial species reported in.  相似文献

Trophic niche overlap in native and alien fish species can lead to competitive interactions whereby non‐native fishes outcompete indigenous individuals and eventually affect the viability of natural populations. The species Erythroculter mongolicus and Erythroculter ilishaeformis (belonging to the Culterinae), which are two commercially important fish species in the backwater bay of the Pengxi River in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), were threatened by competition from the non‐native Coilia ectenes (lake anchovy). The latter is an alien species introduced into the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China and now widespread in the TGR. The trophic consequences of non‐native lake anchovy invasion for E. mongolicus and E. ilishaeformis were assessed using stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) and associated metrics including the isotopic niche, measured as the standard ellipse area. The trophic niche of native E. mongolicus had little overlap (<15%) with the alien fish species and was significantly reduced in size after invasion by lake anchovy. This suggests that E. mongolicus shifted to a more specialized diet after invasion by lake anchovy. In contrast, the trophic niche overlap of native fish E. ilishaeformis with the alien fish species was larger (>50%) and the niche was obviously increased, implying that fish in this species exploited a wider dietary base to maintain their energetic requirements. Thus, marked changes for the native E. mongolicus and E. ilishaeformis were detected as the trophic consequences of invasion of non‐native lake anchovy.  相似文献

Chaenocephalus aceratus (Family Channicthyidae) is one of the dominant species of demersal fish living on the South Georgia shelf where it is caught in low numbers as by-catch in the mackerel icefish and Antarctic krill commercial fisheries. Data collected during 14 demersal fish surveys, from 1986 to 2006, are analysed to investigate biomass, distribution, growth and diet. Biomass estimates from a swept area method ranged from 4,462 to 28,740 tonnes on the South Georgia and Shag Rock shelves although few fish were caught at Shag Rocks. Analysis of length frequency data indicated that growth was fast in the first five years with males and females attaining lengths at first spawning of 440 mm TL and 520 mm TL. The diet was comprised of fish and crustaceans, with an ontogenetic shift in diet from Euphausia superba and mysids to benthic fish and decapods observed to begin at 250 mm TL. In larger fish (>500 mm TL) the diet was dominated by fish. C. aceratus diet is sufficiently different from the other species of channichthyids around South Georgia to suggest that these species have undergone resource partitioning.  相似文献
