The family Labridae is one of the largest and most important groups of reef fishes in the Southern Atlantic. There is a remarkable ecologic interest in this family because of their complex interactions in the reef environment. Predictions of genetic variability in fish based on biological patterns have often been contradictory. The present work aimed to increase the cytogenetic data about the family and verify the possible correlation between larval pelagic phase and chromosomal rearrangements based on the putative basal Perciformes karyotype (2n = 48a). Therefore, cytogenetic analyses were performed in the species Halichoeres brasiliensis (2n = 48, 48a, FN = 48); Halichoeres radiatus (2n = 48, 48a, FN = 48) and in three populations of Halichoeres poeyi (2n = 48, 4m + 44st-a, FN = 52) from Brazilian coastline. A conserved diploid number was observed in all species and populations. Single NORs were identified in H. brasiliensis and in two populations of H. poeyi (BA and RJ), while multiple NORs were observed in H. radiatus and in H. poeyi from Rio Grande do Norte. The constitutive heterochromatin is reduced and distributed over centromeric and pericentromeric regions. The ribosomal sites allowed differentiating two groups of H. poeyi along the Brazilian coast; one of them comprising the population from RN, bearing multiple NORs, and another representing the populations from BA and RJ, bearing single NORs. The recently separated species, H. brasiliensis and H. radiatus, although presenting similar diploid numbers and chromosomal formulae, could be distinguished by the number of NOR-bearing chromosomes. The results revealed an evolutionary pattern chiefly derived from pericentric inversions. The correlation between larval pelagic phase and cytogenetic data on Labridae indicates that the degree of karyotypic diversification reported within this family, ranging from a highly conserved to a derived pattern, is probably influenced by the species-specific duration of larval pelagic phase.  相似文献

Damselfishes (Pomacentridae) are among the most common of reef fishes in tropical seas, comprising 320 species in all, with 268 species alone in the Indo-West Pacific regions. 15 genera (Abudefduf, Amblyglyphidodon, Amphiprion, Chelioprion, Chromis, Chrysiptera, Dascyllus, Pristotis, Dischistodus, Hemiglyphidodon, Neoglyphidodon, Neopomacentrus, Plectroglyphidodon, Pomacentrus, Stegastes) and at least 39 species inhabit the waters of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. They are important ecologically because many species are extremely abundant in reefs, and also economically, as several are collected in large numbers for the lucrative aquarium trade. This demand has led to some fishermen using destructive methods in obtaining the fishes, to the point that original standing populations may not be recoverable. This threat poses a need for conservation of the reefs. The present study based primarily on fishes collected from the waters of Singapore and specimens from the Zoological Reference Collection at the National University of Singapore, will serve the dual purpose of establishing a current species list for Malaysia and Singapore, and to update and clarify the local taxonomy of the group. An annotated list (with localities) is provided of the known or reported species to aid studies on reefs.  相似文献

B chromosomes occur in several Neotropical fish species. Cytogenetic analysis of 27 specimens (15 females and 12 males) of Astyanax scabripinnis paranae from the Araquá river (a small headwater tributary of the Tietê river) shows that this population has 2n=50 chromosomes (4M+30 SM+4ST+12A), two chromosome pairs with NORs and conspicuous C-band positive blocks in the terminal position of the long arm of four chromosome pairs. In this population, eight females presented 2n=51 chromosomes and the extra chromosome was a large metacentric similar in size and morphology to the first chromosome pair in the karotype. This accessory chromosome is entirely heterochromatic in C-banded metaphases and shows a late replication pattern evidenced by BrdU incorporation. There was no significant correlation between the presence of B chromosomes and increased NOR activity at the P>0.05 level. Some aspects related to these B chromosomes are discussed.  相似文献

Here we report on 16 microsatellite loci designed for the damselfish Dascyllus aruanus. All loci were tested on 98 individuals and were polymorphic (seven to 35 alleles). Expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.705 to 0.942. Six loci showed Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium due to the occurrence of null alleles. Cross-species amplifications conducted within the genus Dascyllus (D. carneus, D. strasburgi, D. trimaculatus) lead to polymorphic fragments in 32 out of 48 tests. These 16 loci will enable future research into the behavioural ecology and population ecology of Dascyllus aruanus throughout the Indo-Pacific.  相似文献

Fin shape strongly influences performance of locomotion across all swimming styles. In this study, we focused on the diversity of the pectoral fin morphology in damselfishes of the Eastern Pacific. Underwater observations and a review of literature allowed the characterization of ten behavioral groups. Territorial and non-territorial species were discriminated easily with traditional morphometrics. Five ecomorphological groups were recognized by geometric morphometric analyses. Geometric data segregated the outgroup from the damselfishes and allowed the distinction of mean morphologies from extreme ones within territorial and non-territorial species. Additionally, geometric morphometric data split Abudefduf into two groups: (1) A. troschelii is similar to C. atrilobata and (2) A. concolor and A. declivifrons are close to Stegastes. Solitary territorial species (e.g., Stegastes) show rounded and high fins whereas non-territorial species living in groups (e.g., Chromis) present long and curved pectoral fins. In the range of morphological variation, the morphologies of Microspathodon (elongate with highly curved hydrodynamic trailing edge) and Azurina (long, slender and angular) represent the extreme morphologies within territorial and non-territorial species, respectively. Our study revealed a strong relationship between the pectoral fin shape and the behavioral diversification in damselfishes.  相似文献

Otolith-based reconstructions of daily larval growth increments were used to examine the effect of variation in larval growth on size and age at settlement and post-settlement growth, survival and habitat preferences of juvenile bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus Poey). During August 1992 and 1994, newly settled S. partitus were collected from Montastraea coral heads and Porites rubble piles in Tague Bay, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands (17 degrees 45'N, 64 degres 42' W). Daily lapillar otolith increments from each fish were counted and measured with Optimas image analysis software. S. partitus pelagic larval duration was 23.7 d in 1992 (n = 70) and 24.6 d in 1994 (n = 38) and larval age at settlement averaged 13.0 mm total length both years. Analysis of daily otolith increments demonstrated that variation in larval growth rates and size and age at settlement had no detectable effect on post-settlement survivorship but that larger larvae showed a preference for Montastraea coral at settlement. Late larval and early juvenile growth rates showed a significant positive relationship indicating that growth patterns established during the planktonic stage can span metamorphosis and continue into the benthic juvenile phase. Larval growth rates during the first two weeks post-hatching also had a strong effect on age to developmental competence (ability to undergo metamorphosis) in both 1992 and 1994 with the fastest growing larvae being 8 d younger and 0.8 mm smaller at settlement than the slowest growing larvae. These differential growth rates in early stage larvae established trajectories toward larval developmental competence and may prove important in biogeographical studies of larval dispersal.  相似文献

Five species of potential predators of D. aruanus were trained in aquaria using a simple reward versus no-reward training technique in which D. aruanus (no-reward) and a variety of alternative prey species (reward) were presented simultaneously to the former. All the predators tested exhibited an ability to learn to approach the reward species of fish in preference to D. aruanus. Results are discussed in relation to the recently proposed theory that potential predators may learn in the field not to attack D. aruanus but to concentrate on alternative and more easily caught prey.  相似文献

The threespot damselfish, Eupomacentrus planifrons, defends differently sized territories against individuals of different species. Tests were conducted in the field to determine the mechanism(s) by which this interspecific recognition occurs. It was found to be based largely on visual cues, the most important of which was body form. Both colour and movement had different effects for intra- and inter-specific intruders. Based on these data, it is proposed that different mechanisms underlie the recognition of and territorial defence against the two groups. Further, interspecific territoriality need not be an ‘accidental’ form of intraspecific territoriality nor a transitional phase in the divergence of already established species, but, rather, may be a stable system based on the simple need to defend an area against non-related competitors.  相似文献

Cichlids possess a complex pharyngeal jaw apparatus, the osteological components of which are two upper pharyngeal jaws, articulating with the neurocranial base, and a single lower pharyngeal jaw. Quantitative cinera-diography revealed that pharyngeal food processing in Oreochromis niloticus involves transport, mastication, and swallowing, effected by cyclical pharyngeal jaw movements. Transport and swallowing occur by simultaneous retractions of both upper pharyngeal jaws. Food reduction (mastication) is effected by lower jaw elevation (compression) and protraction (shear) during upper jaw retraction. Each movement cycle contains a transport, reduction, and swallowing component, although their relative importance may vary within a feeding sequence. The upper and lower pharyngeal jaws show opposite anteroposterior movements during most of the cycle. Variations in the amplitudes and the durations of the different movement components reflect the consistency and the size of the food.  相似文献

Epinephelidae (groupers) is an astonishingly diverse group of carnivorous fish widely distributed in reef environments around the world, with growing economic importance. The first chromosomal inferences suggested a conservative scenario for the family. However, to date, this has not been validated using biogeographic and phylogenetic approaches. Thus, to estimate karyotype diversification among groupers, eight species from the Atlantic and Indian oceans were investigated using conventional cytogenetic protocols and fluorescence in situ hybridization of repetitive sequences (rDNA, microsatellites, transposable elements). Despite the remarkable persistence of some symplesiomorphic karyotype patterns, such as all species sharing 2n=48 and most preserve a basal karyotype (2n=48 acrocentrics), the chromosomal diversification in the family revealed an unsuspected evolutionary dynamic, where about 40% of the species escape from the ancestral karyotype pattern. These karyotype changes showed a relation with the historical biogeography, likely as a byproduct of the progressive occupancy of new areas (huge diversity of adaptive and speciation conditions). In this context, oceanic regions harboring more recent clades such as those of the Indo-Pacific, exhibited a higher karyotype diversity. Therefore, the karyotype evolution of Epinephelidae fits well with the expansion and geographic contingencies of its clades, providing a more complex and diverse scenario than previously assumed.  相似文献

Caucasichthys kumaensis gen. et sp. nov., a representative of a new monotypic perciform family Caucasichthyidae, from the Middle Eocene (Bartonian, Kuma Horizon) of the North Caucasus (Gorny Luch locality) is described. The new family is characterized by elongated body, strong preopercular spine in adults, absence of supraneurals, large pelvic fins, long caudal peduncle, and anal fin longer at the base than soft dorsal fin. Scales vary from cycloid to spinoid on different parts of the body. Caucasichthys shares a number of apomorphic features with members of certain percoid families, most notably the Priacanthidae. However, because of its unique combination of features, the new family cannot be properly placed within any existing perciform suborder and it is placed incertae sedis among the Perciformes.  相似文献

We studied the recovery of juvenile fat snook (Centropomus parallelus) after subchronic exposure to different concentrations of copper. Healthy juveniles (1.98 g) were exposed to 25 or 50 μg Cu/L for 30 days (12 replicates with 5 fish in each one), and recovery was observed at 0, 4, 10, and 30 days after exposure (3 replicates with 5 fish in each one). Copper genotoxicity in exposed individuals was observed using a micronucleus assay, and recovery was not observed even 30 days post-exposure. Copper accumulation was observed in fish exposed to 25 or 50 μg/L of copper in the gills (14.4 and 34.4 μg/g, respectively) and muscle (5.7 and 5.5 μg/g, respectively), and a return to normal copper levels (6.0 μg/g for gills and 2.5 μg/g for muscle) was observed 4 and 30 days post-exposure in the gills and muscle tissues, respectively. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) was 80% inhibited in individuals exposed to copper and returned to normal levels for fish exposed to basal concentrations within 10 days. Although copper accumulation in tissues dispersed 30 days post-exposure, no recovery from genotoxicity was observed during this time. Thirty days was not enough to recover juvenile fat snook following subchronic exposure to copper.  相似文献

Cytogenetic studies were performed on specimens of Atherinella brasiliensis from Laranjeiras Bay (Paraná State, Brazil). All specimens had a diploid number of 48 chromosomes, with a karyotype constituted by 4m+14sm+18st+12a and fundamental number of 84. The C-positive heterochromatin was distributed over the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the centromeric regions and on short arms of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. Most of this heterochromatin was AT-rich, except in the NORs, which were rich in GC, as detected by double staining with chromomycin A3/4'-6-diamin-2-phenylindole. Single NORs were located at terminal positions of a submetacentric pair, as confirmed by fluorescent in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA probes. Both techniques showed a size heteromorphism between the homologous chromosomes. The 5S rDNA clusters were located in terminal positions on two chromosomal pairs and also displayed a size heteromorphism. Despite the conserved diploid number, the data on the karyotype microstructure help characterize the cytogenetic profile of this group.  相似文献

Synopsis Billfishes have long been known to impale a great variety of objects, but there are only two brief, obscure records of marine turtles being speared. Details are presented on these two, as well as on two other confirmed records; data from two additional unconfirmed records are also presented. In total, three species of marine turtles are known to have been impaled by three species of billfishes; a fourth species of fish and a fourth species turtle are listed in an unconfirmed case. Records come from the eastern and western Pacific as well as the eastern Atlantic. Of the four confirmed cases, the turtles survived in two, and apparently died as an effect of the spearing in the other two. In three confirmed cases only the impaled rostrum was encountered, and in one confirmed case the entire fish was found, with its rostrum piercing the turtle. There is no obvious advantage — or clear disadvantage — involved in impaling turtles. It is argued that these attacks are accidental, and the result of attempts made by the billfish to capture prey that are near the turtle. These spearings indicate that the chelonians serve as shelters for prey animals on the high seas, and thus, are further evidence of the pelagic existence of marine turtles. The impalings are evidence of a singular ecological role of the turtles — as live fish aggregation devices.  相似文献
