The existence of egg banks not only ensures the survival of zooplankton through harsh periods, but could also affect microevolutionary dynamics. Whether zooplankton at high latitudes can build up an egg bank in sediments, as occurs at lower latitudes, is still unknown. The distribution and age of viable resting eggs of the calanoid copepod Boeckella poppei Mrázek in sediments of two small freshwater lakes on King George Island were determined by slicing sediment cores at 1-cm intervals. Most viable resting eggs were found near the sediment surface, with abundance sharply declining to very low values at the depth of 5?cm, although eggs were present as deep as 9?cm in the sediments of Yanouhu Lake. The egg abundances in Xihu Lake and Yanouhu Lake were estimated to be 9.2?×?104 and 7.2?×?104?eggs?m?2, respectively. 210Pb dating indicated a relatively constant sedimentation rate (0.023?cm?year?1) in Xihu Lake, which was used to estimate the mean age (46.8?year), the maximum age (195.7?year), and the mortality rate (1.64?% year?1) of resting eggs of B. poppei in Xihu Lake. The accumulation of resting eggs with long-term viability in sediments provided the first evidence for the existence of egg banks in two Antarctic maritime lakes. An egg bank may serve as an overwintering strategy for B. poppei in Antarctica, enhance their ability to cope with random extreme changes, and contribute to their broad distribution.  相似文献

Many planktonic calanoid copepod species have been proved to spend a part of their life cycle as benthic resting eggs. In addition to avoiding seasonally occurring unfavourable conditions resting stages may also be used as a long-term survival strategy. The aim of this study was to find out for how long eggs of calanoid copepods retain their viability in the sediments of the Baltic Sea. The occurrence of viable copepod eggs in sea bottom sediment was studied in Pojovik Bay, SW coast of Finland. Eggs were found throughout a 25 cm deep core but deeper than 20 cm they were very scarce. Eggs were incubated at 12 °C in order to check the viability, and their age was estimated by determining the sediment accumulation rate with 137Cs-method. Viable eggs were estimated to be 10–13 yrs old, some possibly even 18–19 yrs. Most eggs in the top 8 cm were viable, their age being up to 7–8 yrs. Nauplii that hatched from the eggs belonged to Acartia bifilosa and Eurytemora affinis, A. bifilosa dominating the hatchers of the top sedment layers and E. affinis the deeper layers. Preliminary evidence is presented that E. affinis produces true diapause eggs in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Early life history patterns were studied in the dominant euphausiids from the northern Gulf of Alaska (GOA) in 2001-2004. Gravid females of Thysanoessa inermis were observed in April and May. Brood size varied from 10 to 1021 eggs with an average of 138 ± 19 (95% CI) eggs female− 1. Most gravid females started to release eggs within the first 2 days of incubation. The average number of eggs released per female was similar in incubation Day 1 and 2, but significantly smaller on Day 3 and 4. About 25% of the females were continuously releasing eggs over 3 days rather than producing a single distinctive brood. In contrast, gravid females of Euphausia pacifica were observed from early July through October. Most gravid females released eggs on the first day of observation, while only 2% of females produced eggs repeatedly. Brood size varied from 20 to 246 eggs with an average of 102 ± 12 (95% CI) eggs female− 1. The relationship between E. pacifica brood size and ambient chlorophyll-a concentration was sigmoidal (r2 = 0.73), with food saturated brood size of 144 ± 14(SE, P < 0.001) eggs, and half-saturation occurring at 0.46 ± 0.02(SE, P < 0.001) mg chlorophyll-a m− 3. The average interbrood interval of E. pacifica reared at 12 °C and satiated food conditions in the laboratory was ∼ 8 days, suggesting their potential individual fecundity in the GOA was 1148-1530 eggs per spawning season. Hatching and early development (from egg to furcilia stage) was studied under 5 °C, 8 °C and 12 °C. Hatching was nearly synchronous and lasted 3-6 h, depending on incubation temperature. Development times from egg to the first furcilia stage ranged between 20 and 33 days for T. inermis, and 15 and 45 days for E. pacifica at 12 °C and 5 °C, respectively.  相似文献

All species of Daphnia (Cladocera) produce, at some stage in their life cycle, diapausing eggs, which can remain viable for decades or centuries forming a “seed bank” in lake sediments. Because of their often good preservation in lake sediment, they are useful in paleolimnology and microevolutionary studies. The focus of this study was the analysis of cladoceran resting eggs stored in the sediment in order to examine the ephippial eggs bank of Daphnia pulicaria Forbes in six mountain lakes in the High Tatra Mountains, the Western Carpathians (northern Slovakia and southern Poland). Firstly, we analyzed distribution, abundance and physical condition of resting eggs in the sediment for their later used in historical reconstruction of Daphnia populations by genetic methods. To assess changes in the genetic composition of the population through time, we used two microsatellite markers. Although DNA from resting eggs preserved in the High Tatra Mountain lake sediments was extracted by various protocols modified for small amounts of ancient DNA, DNA from eggs was not of sufficient quality for microsatellite analyses. Distribution curves of resting eggs from sediment cores correspond to the environmental changes that have occurred in the High Tatra Mountains area during last two centuries (atmospheric acid deposition, fish introduction) and demonstrate their influence on natural populations. Evaluation of ephippia physical condition (the most common category was empty ephippial covers) suggests that the majority of resting eggs hatched to produce a new generation of Daphnia or may be due to failed deposition of resting eggs by Daphnia to the chitinous case. In conclusion, age, low quantity and poor physical condition of resting eggs from these Tatra lake sediments proved to be unsuitable not just for use in genetic analyses, but also the possibilities of autogenous restoration of Daphnia populations from the resting egg banks in the Tatra sediments are negligible.  相似文献

This is the first demonstration that sediment contaminants can influence the reproduction of amphipods. Groups of Paracorophium excavatum from a slightly contaminated estuarine site were held within laboratory mesocosms containing four copper-spiked estuarine sediments (Cu 14-46 μg g−1 dry weight) and a control sediment (Cu 5 μg g−1 dry weight) at 15 °C for 28 days. Copper sediment concentration did not affect the amphipod sex ratio. Female maturation was inhibited within copper-spiked sediments but female length was similar. Juvenile recruitment occurred only in sediments containing less than 20 μg g−1. Males were significantly larger than females in the control sediment (Cu 5 μg g−1 dry weight) and male length decreased linearly with increasing copper concentration. The copper concentration within whole body tissues increased with dry body dry weight in all sediments except the highest copper concentration. Following 28 days of exposure, none of the female amphipods from the copper-dosed sediments was brooding embryos. In contrast, brood size of females in the control sediment (Cu 5 μg g−1) was similar to field samples. Because low concentrations of sediment copper affect the maturation and growth rates of male and female amphipods differently, these life-history traits could affect the population structure of amphipods exposed to copper contaminated sediments.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of sediment grazing and burrowing activities of natural populations of Mictyris longicarpus on benthic metabolism, nitrogen flux and irrigation rates by comparing sediments taken from minimum disturbance exclusion cages and adjacent sediments subject to M. longicarpus activities. M. longicarpus reduced sediment surface chlorophyll a (approximately 77%), organic carbon (approximately 95%) and total nitrogen concentrations (approximately 99%) in comparison to ungrazed sediments. Consequently, they significantly reduced gross benthic O2 production (about 71%) and sediment O2 consumption (approximately 46%). Mean N2 fluxes showed net effluxes (276-430 μmol m−2 day−1) in the presences of M. longicarpus and net uptakes (194.09-449.21 μmol m−2 day−1) where they were excluded. The net uptake of N2 was most likely due to cyanobacteria fixing of N2, as dense microbial mats became established over the sediment surface in the absence of M. longicarpus grazing activity. Sediment irrigation/transport rates calculated from CsCl tracer dilution indicated greater irrigation rates in the exclusions (12.12-16.22 l m−2 h−1) compared to inhabited sediments (6.33-11.73 l m−2 h−1) and this was again was most likely due to the lack of grazing pressure which allowed large populations of small burrowing polychaetes to inhabit the organic matter rich exclusion sediments. As such, the main influence of M. longicarpus was the interception and consumption of transported organic material, benthic microalgae and other small infaunal organisms resulting in the removal of approximately 0.06 g m−2 day−1 of nitrogen and 12.12 g m−2 day−1 of organic carbon. This “cleansing” of the sediments reduced sediment metabolism and the flux of solutes across the sediment water interface and ultimately the heavy predation of M. longicarpus by transient species such as stingrays, results in a net loss of carbon and nitrogen from the system.  相似文献

Here we present a quantitative study on the density, age and viability of the diapausing egg banks of the rotifer species complex Brachionus plicatilis in the sediments of 15 water bodies from Eastern Spain. Sampled ponds, located in coastal and inland areas, varied in salinity and ranged in size, depth and permanence. By identifying ‘hatched’, ‘deteriorated’ and ‘viable’ diapausing eggs in the sediment samples, we estimated production, hatching and deterioration in relation to the habitat properties of each pond. Our results indicate the presence of large numbers of diapausing eggs in the sediments of almost all of the ponds studied (2-115 eggs cm− 2). Inland ponds tended to have higher densities than coastal lagoons. The vertical distribution of eggs in the sediments frequently showed a non-decreasing pattern, which suggested a high among-year variation in egg production. Despite maximum age of eggs of 60-80 years, the median age (3-30 years) suggests that rotifer egg banks are young in the studied ponds. Egg senescence is suggested by the declining abundance of ‘healthy-looking’ eggs with depth. The proportion of ‘deteriorated’ eggs ranged 75-99% suggesting that deterioration rates in the sediments are high and vary among habitats. Hatching and deterioration rates, as estimated from the counts of ‘hatched’, ‘deteriorated’ and ‘healthy-looking’ eggs in the sediments, largely varied among ponds. An association between hatching and deterioration rates is suggested by our data. This is in agreement with the hypothesis that hatching rates of diapausing eggs depended not only on the risks associated with the water column, as initially expected by the general theory on diapause, but they are also related to the incidence of deterioration processes in the sediment.  相似文献

A shading experiment was conducted over a growing season to measure the effects of light reduction on Vallisneria americana in Perdido Bay on the Florida-Alabama border and to determine the response of heterotrophic bacteria in the rhizosphere. Plants subjected to 92% light reduction showed the most pronounced effects in chlorophyll a concentration, above- and below-ground biomass, and leaf dimensions. These results further suggested that the V. americana life cycle, as exhibited in temperate waters, was impaired. Heterotrophic bacteria were enumerated and identified (i) from the roots and sediments of fully illuminated plants and from unvegetated sediments at three intervals and (ii) from the roots of plants that have been subjected to 92% light reduction for 3 months. Up to two orders of magnitude greater numbers of bacteria were enumerated from root samples than sediment samples on a dry weight basis. Bacteria enumerated from the roots of plants subjected to light reduction (1.3±1.1×108 CFU g−1) were significantly higher than numbers of bacteria enumerated from the roots of fully illuminated plants (4.8±1.8×107 g−1 in the summer) or sediment samples (1.4±0.03×106 g−1). This suggests the roots of seagrasses stressed by light reduction provided more nutrients for bacterial growth. Higher percentages of Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from roots (up to 85% in the fall) than sediments (0-15%). Examination of isolates for traits characteristic of rhizosphere bacteria (siderophore production, formation of the phytohormone indole-3-acetic acid, and antifungal activity) did not show a clear distinction between root-associated and sediment isolates. Taxonomic identifications of root-associated bacteria based on MIDI analysis of fatty acid methyl esters were consistent with bacteria known to be associated with other plants or found at oxic-anoxic interfaces. In addition, the bacterial identifications showed most species were associated with only roots or only sediments. These results support studies suggesting seagrass rhizospheres harbor distinct bacterial communities.  相似文献

The erosion and transport of juvenile softshell clams (Mya arenaria) was studied in a laboratory flume in relation to free-stream velocity (0, 7, 16, 29 and 35 cm s− 1), shell length (0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 mm) and type of sediment (mud, sandy-mud, sand and gravel). Our results showed that these factors interact together on the erosion of clams from the sediment. Juveniles were eroded in great numbers in sand while mud retained them more easily. Bedload transport was initiated at speeds of 16 cm s− 1. Most of the clams were eroded in sandy sediments at speeds of 29 and 35 cm s− 1. The smallest individuals were highly vulnerable to erosion compared to the other size classes studied. A results-based model using the logistic regression statistics was proposed. This allowed the estimation of erosion probabilities for a given hydrosedimentary environment. A field validation of the model was then carried out. Field results confirmed the importance of free-stream velocity, shell length and type of sediment on the erosion rate of clams. The differences observed between predicted and field results suggest that the model underestimated the erosion rate in the field. Results are discussed in the context of hydrosedimentary environments found off the eastern coast of Canada.  相似文献

The influence of temperature and chlorophyll concentration on egg production, hatching success, female survival and body size of the copepod Temora longicornis was investigated in situ in the coastal waters of the Eastern English Channel. Twenty samples were collected between February and July 2003 three to four times per month. The maximum daily level of egg production of 75.5 eggs female−1 was observed in March, with minima of 10 eggs female−1 in February and July. Between February and March egg production increased with chlorophyll concentration. At the end of March a decrease in egg production corresponded to a strong increase in chlorophyll concentration that indicated a Phaeocystis-dominated bloom. After this period egg production closely followed the temporal variation in chlorophyll concentration with a maximum of 55.3 eggs female−1 in April during a second peak of chlorophyll concentration. Hatching success varied between 60% and 80% and was not influenced by chlorophyll concentration, in situ temperature or any other biological parameter considered in this study. Increases in temperature from February to July paralleled a decrease in body length and an increase in the percentage of spawning females. Mean female survival followed the variation of both temperature and chlorophyll concentration only between April and July. Temperature and chlorophyll concentration affected the reproductive parameters of T. longicornis differently. Female survival and body size were negatively correlated with temperature, while the highest chlorophyll concentrations were not always favourable for egg production. Therefore the quality of food should not be associated with chlorophyll quantity. Furthermore, the maximum values of egg production in this study are the highest recorded for T. longicornis. This study, conducted for the first time in the Eastern English Channel, showed high levels of productivity of T. longicornis despite a decrease of egg production during a Phaeocystis sp. dominated bloom in April.  相似文献

Rotifers are cyclical parthenogens that produce sexual diapausing eggs at some stage in their life cycle. These eggs are encysted embryos that remain viable for extended periods in lake and pond sediments, thus acting as an egg bank with many ecological and evolutionary consequences. Despite its importance to rotifer evolution, there are no studies on resting egg deterioration and associated processes in natural environments. In this study, more than 4000 diapausing eggs of species from the Brachionus plicatilis complex, which includes several closely related cryptic species, were collected from different sediment depths in 15 ponds in eastern Spain and were classified according to three features thought to be related to their viability: shell integrity, embryo size, and embryo colour. A positive association was found between embryo size and hatching success in those eggs having an intact shell. Diapausing eggs that showed good shell integrity and no more than a 25% reduction of multinuclear embryo maximum size were classified as healthy and 98.9% hatched. Darkening of diapausing egg embryo was an indicator of viability loss. A decreasing frequency of healthy-looking diapausing eggs was observed with increasing sediment depth, although some exceptions were found.  相似文献

The egg production of the copepod Acartia bifilosa was measured and related to environmental variables and food availability in two estuaries located in the same biogeographic region (Bay of Biscay) but showing very strong differences in abiotic and biotic features: the Gironde estuary (France) and the estuary of Mundaka (Spain). The study was conducted during the spring-summer-autumn period of 1994. Food availability was evaluated by analysing the chlorophyll a (Chl a), the particulate organic carbon (POC) and the easily extractable macromolecular compounds such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids of the seston. The egg production of copepods was estimated from field incubations with natural water, and phytoplankton feeding of adult females was estimated by means of the gut fluorescence method. The nutritional environment of the Gironde was characterised by high amounts of suspended particulate matter (SPM) with low food value, emphasising the mainly detrital origin of the organic matter (OM). In Mundaka, the higher contribution of phytoplankton to the seston led to marked increases in particulate food value accounting for up to 35% of organic matter. The weight-specific egg production was found to be sharply higher in Mundaka (ranging from 0.2 to 0.63×10−3 day−1) than in the Gironde (ranging from 0 to 0.13×10−3 day−1), but the seasonal trend of variations was similar, the highest weight-specific egg production rates occurring in early summer and the lowest in autumn in both estuaries. Egg production was not correlated linearly with temperature since maximal egg production occurred at intermediate temperatures. In Mundaka, the egg production showed a significant positive correlation with the chlorophyll and the Chl/SPM and the POC/SPM ratios. This coupled with higher values of algal food availability (Chl a/SPM: 10 to 1870 μg g−1) and gut fluorescence (between 0.12 and 0.38 ng Chl a Eq ind−1) indicate that a herbivorous diet could cover the energy requirements of A. bifilosa and support egg production. In the Gironde, the algal food availability and the gut fluorescence were lower (Chl a/SPM: 10 to 80 μg g−1; GF: 0.09 and 0.25 ng Chl a Eq ind−1), and the egg production showed significant positive correlation with the particulate food value, suggesting that other sources of carbon rather than phytoplankton were responsible for the observed changes in egg production. Results indicate that the particular seston properties of each system may be responsible for the noticeable differences in A. bifilosa fertility among estuaries.  相似文献

The maintenance of species and genetic diversity within zooplankton egg banks may be crucial to the re-establishment of zooplankton communities following historical disturbance, such as anthropogenic acidification which globally caused widespread damage to ecological communities. Despite this, no other study has described basic characteristics of zooplankton egg banks among lakes with different acidification histories, such as variation in resting egg concentration. Theoretically, habitats with frequent periods of harsh environmental conditions are expected to select for resting egg production or prolonged dormancy in zooplankton, which would increase the size of the resting egg bank in lake sediments. In this study, we compared abundances of viable and inviable calanoid copepod resting eggs among three freshwater lakes with different acidification histories. While Swan Lake underwent major chemical and biological changes from acid and metal deposition, Teardrop and Bat lakes were relatively unaffected by historical acidification and had comparatively constant, but different pH over time. We also tested the effect of age on the viability of resting eggs. As predicted, higher numbers of viable resting eggs were found in recent sediments from acid-recovering Swan Lake compared to study lakes with relatively temporally constant environments (Teardrop and Bat lakes) when the total number of eggs was held as a covariate. We detected this result in spite of similar pelagic abundances of Leptodiaptomus minutus, the dominant species in zooplankton communities of these lakes. This pattern did not necessarily hold for inviable egg concentrations since these eggs were more abundant in both Swan and Bat lakes compared to Teardrop Lake in older sediments (1939–1951, 1800s). Within study lakes, the abundance of viable resting eggs declined with increased egg age. Further study is required to test mechanisms underlying these patterns. Handling editor: S. I. The present study employed simultaneously methods to investigate particle and solute transport and reaction rates in sandy sediments inhabited by two worms (2500 m− 2) with different feeding modes. Heteromastus filiformis is a head-down deposit-feeder and the main activities exerted by this worm are transport of particles as faecal pellets from subsurface to surface sediments and burrow ventilation. Marenzelleria viridis is a surface deposit-feeder that actively searches for food by burrowing near the sediment surface, producing a network of ventilated galleries in this zone. M. viridis exhibited 1.5 to 2.2 times higher particle mixing rates (Db = 3.3 to 4 × 10− 3 cm− 2 d− 1) compared to H. filiformis. In M. viridis treatments, continuous advection (eddy diffusion) was the major factor influencing solute transport resulting in apparent diffusion rates (Da = 2.2 cm− 2 d− 1), which were 3 times higher than molecular diffusion within the sediment. In H. filiformis inhabited sediments, the transport of solutes was discontinuous and driven by a surprisingly high nonlocal exchange (α = 1.1-1.3 d− 1), emphasizing its strong irrigation effects. Accordingly, the enhancement of solute fluxes was more pronounced for H. filiformis compared to M. viridis. Depth integrated TCO2 production derived from diagenetic modelling, which takes into account three reaction zones, is in good agreement with rates obtained from measured fluxes, indicating the applicability of both approaches to get reliable rates. However, the reaction rates showed that the presence of animals had a modest effect on microbial carbon oxidation. The results proved that transport conditions are deeply related to feeding modes. Exchange of solutes was the most important transport process by H. filiformis, while M. viridis affected both mixing and solute transport.  相似文献

Tolerance and remedial function of submersed macrophyte Vallisneria spiralis to phenanthrene in freshwater sediments were investigated by manipulating initial phenanthrene concentrations in sediments from 8 to 80 mg kg−1 dry sediment. The biomass growth of V. spiralis on phenanthrene-spiked sediments was not adversely affected until initial phenanthrene concentrations in sediments increased to 80 mg kg−1 dry sediment. V. spiralis might evolve adaptive mechanisms to toxic contaminants in sediment, and then could change the growth patterns in order to decrease the toxicity on its growth. The removal efficiencies of phenanthrene from the planted sediments were 18% higher than those from the sediments without plant even under an initial phenanthrene concentration of 80 mg kg−1 dry sediments. The enhanced removal of phenanthrene in sediments by the plant might be achieved mainly by the synergism between plant roots and microbes in the rhizosphere.  相似文献

In this study we examine the influence of non-monsoon sediment arrival on the high-diversity SE Indian seagrass meadows of the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. We used a gradient-based approach to examine the influence of increasing sediment loads on species composition and shoot density. In addition, for the ubiquitous seagrass (Cymodocea serrulata), we tested the influence of sediment on its biomass and productivity. We identified three sites in Palk Bay and four sites in Gulf of Mannar (SE India) along a gradient of sediment input. At each of the seven locations, sediment traps were deployed to measure sedimentation rates. Nine seagrass cores were taken systematically along 50 m transects at a constant sub-tidal depth to measure shoot density and biomass. A few shoots of C. serrulata were marked to estimate the above ground seagrass growth rate. Our results indicate that sedimentation rates that ranged from 8.6 to 62.4 mg DW cm−2 d−1 could not explain species composition of the meadow or shoot density of the observed species. C. serrulata was, by far, the most abundant species and present in all sediment conditions. Sedimentation rates did not alter shoot elongation rates in C. serrulata, ranging from 1.54 ± 0.29 SD to 0.25 ± 0.02 SD cm d−1, but in contrast, increased vertical rhizome elongation rate. This increase was reflected in an increase in below ground biomass along the sediment gradient (R2 = 0.582, p = 0.01). C. serrulata appears to be able to adapt to the sediment dynamics in this area by allocating resources to rhizomes and roots to counteract burial and stabilizing sediments. Given that siltation is one of the most important threats to seagrass meadows, understanding the species-specific adaptive mechanisms of seagrass species in these high-sediment, high diversity South Asian meadows is an important first step in ensuring their long-term survival and functioning.  相似文献

Many marine protists produce a benthic resting stage during their life history. This non-motile cyst stage can either germinate near the sediment surface to provide the inoculum for subsequent blooms or, be buried by sediment deposits over time and entrained into the sedimentary record. Buried cysts can be resuspended into the water column by mixing events (e.g., storms) or other disturbances (e.g., dredging). It is not clear how long cysts can survive while buried in the sediments and still be capable of germinating given favorable conditions. Here, the germination success of cysts produced by the potentially toxic dinoflagellate genus Alexandrium and the non-toxic dinoflagellate genus Scrippsiella is reported from a 60-cm sediment core collected in Sequim Bay, WA, in December 2011. Cysts of Alexandrium spp. and Scrippsiella spp. were isolated from 2-cm sections of the core, placed in individual wells of a 96-well plate with growth medium, imaged, incubated at favorable conditions and monitored for germination. An image analysis program, DinoCyst, was used to quantitatively measure the amount of granular storage products, presumed energy stores, inside the cytoplasm to test the hypothesis that older cysts located deeper in the sediment core will have fewer energy stores available and will be less likely to germinate. An index of the area of the cytoplasm occupied with granular storage products relative to cyst size, termed ‘cytoplasmic fullness’, and age, based on 210Pb dating of surrounding sediments, was compared with germination success or failure. This research indicates that cysts of Alexandrium spp. and Scrippsiella spp. can remain viable in sediments for 60 years or longer, show little visual evidence of cytoplasmic deterioration over this timescale (as measured by cytoplasmic fullness), and that germination success is statistically similar for cysts isolated from 0–60 cm deep in the sediment core. These results suggest that a cyst's cytoplasmic fullness is not indicative of viability and that cysts located as deep as 60 cm in the sediments are as likely to germinate as surface cysts given favorable conditions.  相似文献

In many coastal and estuarine areas the planktonic copepods Acartia tonsa and Acartia clausi show a spatial separation with A. tonsa restricted to brackish waters and confined environments and A. clausi inhabiting areas more influenced by sea water. The hatching and viability of A. tonsa and A. clausi eggs exposed to anoxia and anoxia/sulfide (conditions that are frequent in bottom waters of the most confined areas) was evaluated to determine if these stress factors play a role in the distribution of these species. Subitaneous eggs, spawned by laboratory reared organisms, were incubated in near anoxia (< 7.59 × 10− 3 mmol O2 L− 1) or anoxia/sulfide (∼ 1 mmol L− 1) for different periods (1, 4, 8 and 15 days), then transferred to normoxic conditions. The exposure of the eggs to near anoxia and sulfide appears to induce the same response (quiescence) in both species. Exposure times ≤ 8 days to near anoxia or anoxia/sulfide did not affect egg viability, while 15 day exposure caused significant declines in hatching success of both species. A significant difference between the effects of near anoxia and anoxia/sulfide was observed when incubation lasted 15 days; hatching of eggs exposed to sulfide being higher than that of eggs exposed to near anoxia for both species. No significant differences were observed between the two species in hatching success of eggs exposed to both near anoxia and anoxia/sulfide (with the exception of eggs incubated in near anoxia for 4 days). The results indicate that the impact of anoxia and sulfide on the eggs of the two Acartia species cannot be a factor explaining the spatial distribution in coastal and brackish environments of these copepods.Feeding experiments on A. clausi were also performed. Suitability of different algal species to rear this copepod was evaluated and the results were compared with data previously obtained for A. tonsa. Differences in feeding needs between A. clausi and A. tonsa are discussed.  相似文献

Viable diatom and dinoflagellate resting stages were recovered from sediments in Koljö Fjord on the west coast of Sweden. To determine the maximum survival time of buried resting stages, samples from sediment depths down to 50?cm were incubated at temperatures of 3, 10 and 18?°C. Sediment cores were dated by 210Pb and the age of samples containing viable resting stages was determined using the constant rate of supply model. Dilution cultures of surface sediments allowed semiquantitative estimates of the potential seed bank. Dinoflagellate cysts from species such as Diplopsalis sp., Gymnodinium nolleri, Oblea rotunda and Protoceratium reticulatum were viable down to 15?cm depth, or 37 years old. Spores and resting cells of the diatoms Chaetoceros spp., Detonula confervacea and Skeletonema costatum were viable to over 40?cm depth, and may have been buried for many decades. The seed bank of living resting stages in surficial sediments was found to be rich (c. 57000 diatom resting stages g?1 wet weight and c. 200 dinoflagellate cysts g?1 wet weight), and the percentage of viable resting stages was higher for spore- and cyst-forming species. The oxygen-deficient sediments in Koljö Fjord appear to be a natural conservator of cell viability, a condition not easily simulated in laboratory studies. These results are ecologically important since spores and cysts are a repository of genetic material able to repopulate waters if resuspended and exposed to suitable light, temperature and nutrients.  相似文献

The Alexandrium spp. resting cysts were found abundantly in faecal pellets collected from the bottom sediments at two stations in Hiroshima Bay. It is considered that these faecal pellets were excreted by the macrobenthos, such as polychaeta and mollusca, based on their size and morphology. Polychaeta was the most dominant macrobenthos, and mollusca was the second most dominant group in Hiroshima Bay. The resting cysts of Alexandrium spp. in the bottom sediments at the two stations were counted in both the faecal pellets of macrobenthos and in the surrounding sediment. As a result, the number of cysts in the faecal pellets accounted for 28.9-35.2% of total cysts. In addition, cysts isolated from faecal pellets had almost the same germination ability as those in the sediment. Thus, Alexandrium cysts are tolerant to the predation and digestive processes of macrobenthic organisms.  相似文献
