Although most physiological processes of bivalves are highly size-dependent in a non-linear manner, often only total densities of populations of freshwater bivalves such as the zebra mussel are reported rather than size-frequency information. This can cause serious errors when trying to predict or assess the environmental impacts of these filter feeders on planktonic communities or the role of their pseudofeces in transferring materials from the plankton to the benthos. We used a bioenergetics model to examine the effect that differing size-frequency distribution has on influencing total phytoplankton consumption and pseudofeces production. We constructed different size-frequency distributions of 1000 zebra mussels with the same mean length or same mean body mass for comparison. In addition, we used several size-frequency distributions from the published literature. The size-frequency distribution of a population had a tremendous impact on both total consumption and pseudofeces production with rates varying by more than an order of magnitude (43.5 g consumption by 1000 smaller mussels to 654 g for a population dominated by large mussels). These data emphasize the importance of knowing not only population density, but population size structure in order to accurately understand and predict the impacts of zebra mussels, or any filter feeder on pelagic and benthic communities. This work also demonstrates the usefulness of a tool such as our bioenergetics model for partitioning the relative impacts of densities and size on a variety of factors such as consumption and pseudofeces production.  相似文献

In order to examine the importance of the settling of large particles to the food supply and feeding behavior of a benthic culture of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, we investigated the tidal dynamics of large (>0.5 mm diameter) marine aggregates, commonly known as marine snow, during three tidal cycles in July 1998 at a shallow, subtidal, low current flow regime site along the coast of Maine (Shorey Cove, Roque Island, Englishman's Bay, Maine). In situ, optically measured marine snow showed a distinct tidal signal displaying an increase in size and abundance through high tide with a peak on the early ebb tide as it settled to the bottom. Marine snow volume ranged an order of magnitude through the tidal cycle, from under 8 to over 80 mm3 l−1. An increase in the in situ marine snow volume corresponded with an increase in benthic mussel feeding activity (from 20% to 60% of maximum exhalant siphon area, which is an estimate of pumping rate) and maximum rates of pseudofeces production by the mussels during periods of low tidal current speeds. In contrast, mussels from the same population feeding on surface waters in shipboard chambers produced no pseudofeces and had high pumping rates (80-100% maximum exhalant siphon area) over the whole tidal period. A second peak in benthic mussel pumping rates also occurred during flood tide.Food quality was lower in the bottom waters due to significantly higher particulate inorganic matter (PIM, >2 mg l−1) when compared with the surface waters. PIM accounted for 95% of the total settled mass flux of 3.4 g m−2 day−1 measured in sediment traps deployed 1 m off the bottom, with organic carbon representing only 2.5% of the mass flux during the mid-summer conditions. At low-current sites such as Shorey Cove, Roque Island, Maine, the settling of marine snow provides an important additional source of food, albeit of low quality, to benthic populations of blue mussels.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus, was investigated within three intertidal mussel beds along Ninety Mile Beach, northern New Zealand, between August 2000 and March 2001. Adult mussels of different sizes (45-105 mm in shell length) were collected from the intertidal sites about 30 min after being submerged by the incoming tide for gut content analyses. Results of these analyses indicate that mussels consume a variety of phytoplankton, micro- and mesozooplankton, including mussel larvae and post-larvae. Cannibalism of juveniles of up to 620 μm was recorded for intertidal mussels, and conspecifics of up to 2.4 mm were found within the stomachs of additional mussels collected in August 2000 from a nearby subtidal site. For all three intertidal populations, mussel larvae and juveniles contribute about 70% of the food particle consumption during the spawning peak in August, while phytoplankton and other zooplankton constitute the majority of the food source (about 99%) in March, during gametogenesis. Larger intertidal mussels tended to have more food particles in their stomachs than smaller mussels within all three populations. Distinctive differences in food consumption among intertidal populations directly coincide with variations in total particulate matter (TPM), particulate organic matter (POM) and percent organic matter (OM) in the adjacent seawater.Separate experiments designed to test the feeding behavior of mussels feeding at different times during the incoming tide were conducted at one of the intertidal sites during August 2000 and March 2001. Results from these experiments indicate a marked shift in food consumption from bivalves to other mesozooplankton in August, and from phytoplankton to mesozooplankton in March. The observed combination of mussel predatory and grazing behavior over the incoming tide and through the year provides evidence for a strong food-web link between the benthic and pelagic life stages of this species. Furthermore, the high rate of cannibalism during some months of the year suggests that this source of food may significantly contribute to the energy budget of wild populations, with potential implications for evolutionary adaptive success.  相似文献

Bivalve Condition Index (CI) is widely employed in environmental monitoring programmes as it integrates physiological responses to stress with changes in somatic growth. Besides indicating, the commercial quality of a bivalve population it may be also be used to compare the relative health of animals in nearby populations. In this study, CI of green mussels, Perna viridis was evaluated as the intrinsic response to the variations in the environment in two potential mussel mariculture sites in the tropical monsoon region with diverse remoteness to riverine outflow. Condition index of mussels from site with relatively higher riverine influence (RI) was compared with mussels from area of reduced riverine (RR) influence along Karnataka coast (Eastern Arabian Sea). The dominant patterns of spatial trends in 12 environmental variables (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, rainfall, chlorophyll-a (chl-a), suspended particulate matter (SPM) particulate organic matter (POM), particulate inorganic matter (PIM), POM/SPM, chla/POM and PIM%) of the sites were resolved by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The stepwise multiple regression analysis related the spatial variability in CI to variations in water temperature and organic content of the seston (chlorophyll-a and particulate organic matter). The discriminant analysis performed with monthly mean water temperature, chl-a levels and CI ratio [high CI ratio (CIhigh) and low CI ratio (CIlow)] indicated that 83.9% of the CIhigh was associated with high chl-a and high water temperature group whereas, 72.4% of CIlow were associated with low chl-a and low water temperature regime. The RR site presented less variation in environmental parameters offering a more conducive environment for the growth of mussels, characterised by better CI with low seasonal variations. Whereas, in the site proximate to riverine discharge, reserves were alternatively channelled into energy-consuming processes and hence unfavourable environmental conditions showed poor tissue condition due to utilization of energy reserves which were potentially destined for growth. Thus, average CI, besides its representation of the general health condition of the bivalves can potentially be used in selecting suitable sites for bivalve mariculture in comparable hydrological environment.  相似文献

Upward nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface were studied in a mussel farming zone (Carteau, Gulf of Fos, France) in order to estimate the impact of organic matter input from biodeposition. Nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, silicate, phosphate and oxygen were measured. Fluxes were estimated by means of polyacrylate benthic chambers placed at sites located under (UM) and outside (OM) the rope hanging structures. Transformation of biodeposited organic matter increases phosphate, silicate and ammonia fluxes. No variation in nitrite fluxes could be detected and only minor differences were observed in nitrate and the oxygen production/consumption equilibrium at the two stations. Phosphate and silicate fluxes, which were always higher at the UM than at the OM site, decreased from spring to winter. Ammonia fluxes were very high under mussel cultures in May and September and lower in November. The fact that ammonia flux was always higher at the UM than at the OM sites might be explained by degradation of mussel biodeposit, as well as by benthic macrafauna excretion. Discrepancies between fluxes of the nutrients studied at the UM and OM sites increased as organic particulate matter in the water column decreased. Variations of oxygen flux followed a different pattern, since they were correlated with presence and abundance of photosynthetic microphytes on the bottom and in the water. Bottom respiration exceeded production of oxygen only in May 1988 at the UM station. As it now stands, biodeposit input into the sediment under mussel ropes does not affect the ecosystem, although the flow of nutrients towards the water column is higher than in other areas.  相似文献

Epifaunal suspension-feeding bivalves can play important roles in marine ecosystems affecting macrobenthic communities, benthic boundary layers and benthic-pelagic coupling, not just by their presence but also by any changes in feeding behaviour. While seston quality and quantity have consistently been found to be important influences on the feeding rates of suspension-feeding bivalves, factors stressing individuals are also likely to be important, as they may affect energy-dependent thresholds of response. We postulated that (1) history of seston quantity would affect how suspension feeders deal with increases in total suspended particulates, and (2) high-seston concentrations would affect feeding rates more in individuals whose energy reserves were low after spawning. Three sites were selected for short-term (1 day) feeding experiments on the pinnid bivalve, Atrina zelandica. At one site, the experiment was run pre-and postspawning. Atrina exhibited high rejection of filtered particles (mostly 75% to 100%) and high organic absorption efficiencies (0.9-1) at all seston levels. Strong differences in the response of feeding behaviour to increased seston concentrations were observed between A. zelandica from the different sites, with lesser differences observed between times. The site-specific feeding responses to seston concentrations observed are likely to affect our ability to model responses of A. zelandica to sediment loading and to influence the importance of A. zelandica to benthic-pelagic coupling.  相似文献

The food chain dynamics of the edible mussel Mytilus edulis L., the American oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) and the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) were investigated in large experimental tanks with flowing, filtered sea water and controlled addition of phytoplankton. The feeding rate of the mussel (5.36 μg carbon removed/l/g C animal was higher than that of the oyster (3.92) and clam (3.03) but the ecological efficiencies (net production/ingested food) × 100 of the clam (23.69 %) and the oyster (18.38 %) were higher than that of the mussel (10.01 %).The food chain efficiencies (net production/available food) were lower than the ecological efficiencies, suggesting under-exploitation of the available food. The clam, although having a lower feeding rate, was more efficient in utilizing the food it filtered and so showed the highest net production. The rates (μg-at/l/g C animal) of regeneration of nutrients, especially total inorganic nitrogen (mussel, 2.1723 × 10?3; oyster, 7.4270 × 10?3; and clam, 8.1750 × 10?3) along with reported high biodeposition rates of bivalves suggest that multi-species aquaculture systems would be more efficient and productive than one-species systems.  相似文献

Samples of suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected from the Humber Estuary had higher concentrations of particulate metals than SPM from Holderness coastal waters (U.K.). Characterised SPM from both sources was used in laboratory experiments involving the uptake of radiotracer109Cd,137Cs,54Mn and65Zn. Kinetic experiments, over five days, showed that the rate and extent of uptake was highly dependent on particle type, with109Cd,54Mn and65Zn being more reactive with Humber Estuary particles than those from Holderness and137Cs having the opposite trend. Adsorption experiments were also carried out on suspensions in which SPM from the Humber Estuary and Holderness coastal water were mixed in various proportions. These experiments revealed that Kd for65Zn increased linearly with the proportion of Humber SPM, Kd for137Cs decreased linearly with increase in Humber SPM and Kd for54Mn and109Cd displayed non-linear behaviour. The results of the study were used to develop an algorithm for predicting the partition coefficients in the Humber Plume based on the extent of particle mixing from the two source regions. The use of206/207Pb ratios in determining the extent of particle mixing is discussed, along with the application of the algorithm to the modelling of particulate trace metal behaviour in the Humber-Wash coastal zone.  相似文献

1. To investigate the impact of zebra mussels ( Dreissena polymorpha ) on phytoplankton community composition, temporal variability in selective feeding by the mussels was determined from April to November 2005 in a natural lake using Delayed Fluorescence (DF) excitation spectroscopy.
2. Selective grazing by zebra mussels varied in relation to seasonal phytoplankton dynamics; mussels showed a consistent preference for cryptophytes and avoidance of chlorophytes and cyanobacteria. Diatoms, chrysophytes and dinoflagellates responded differentially to zebra mussel grazing depending on their size. Analysis of excreted products of the zebra mussels revealed that in addition to chlorophytes and cyanobacteria, phytoplankton >50  μ m and very small phytoplankton (≤7  μ m) were largely expelled in pseudofaeces.
3. The zebra mussel is a selective filter-feeder that alters its feeding behaviour in relation to phytoplankton composition to capture and ingest high quality phytoplankton, especially when phytoplankton occur in preferred size ranges. Flexibility of zebra mussel feeding behaviour and variation in susceptibility among phytoplankton groups to mussel ingestion indicate that invading zebra mussels could alter phytoplankton community composition of lakes and have important ecosystem consequences.  相似文献

Benthic bivalves are important links between primary production and consumers, and are essential intermediates in the flow of energy through estuarine systems. However, information on the diet of filter feeding bivalves in estuarine ecosystems is uncertain, as estuarine waters contain particulate matter from a range of sources and as bivalves are opportunistic feeders. We surveyed bivalves at different distances from the creek mouth at the Yangtze estuarine marsh in winter and summer, and analyzed trophic dynamics using stable isotope (SI) and fatty acid (FA) techniques. Different bivalve species had different spatial distributions in the estuary. Glauconome chinensis mainly occurred in marshes near the creek mouth, while Sinonovacula constricta preferred the creek. Differences were found in the diets of different species. S. constricta consumed more diatoms and bacteria than G. chinensis, while G. chinensis assimilated more macrophyte material. FA markers showed that plants contributed the most (38.86 ± 4.25%) to particular organic matter (POM) in summer, while diatoms contributed the most (12.68 ± 1.17%) during winter. Diatoms made the largest contribution to the diet of S. constricta in both summer (24.73 ± 0.44%) and winter (25.51 ± 0.59%), and plants contributed no more than 4%. This inconsistency indicates seasonal changes in food availability and the active feeding habits of the bivalve. Similar FA profiles for S. constricta indicated that the bivalve had a similar diet composition at different sites, while different δ13C results suggested the diet was derived from different carbon sources (C4 plant Spartina alterniflora and C3 plant Phragmites australis and Scirpus mariqueter) at different sites. Species-specific and temporal and/or spatial variability in bivalve feeding may affect their ecological functions in intertidal marshes, which should be considered in the study of food webs and material flows in estuarine ecosystems.  相似文献

The egg production of the copepod Acartia bifilosa was measured and related to environmental variables and food availability in two estuaries located in the same biogeographic region (Bay of Biscay) but showing very strong differences in abiotic and biotic features: the Gironde estuary (France) and the estuary of Mundaka (Spain). The study was conducted during the spring-summer-autumn period of 1994. Food availability was evaluated by analysing the chlorophyll a (Chl a), the particulate organic carbon (POC) and the easily extractable macromolecular compounds such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids of the seston. The egg production of copepods was estimated from field incubations with natural water, and phytoplankton feeding of adult females was estimated by means of the gut fluorescence method. The nutritional environment of the Gironde was characterised by high amounts of suspended particulate matter (SPM) with low food value, emphasising the mainly detrital origin of the organic matter (OM). In Mundaka, the higher contribution of phytoplankton to the seston led to marked increases in particulate food value accounting for up to 35% of organic matter. The weight-specific egg production was found to be sharply higher in Mundaka (ranging from 0.2 to 0.63×10−3 day−1) than in the Gironde (ranging from 0 to 0.13×10−3 day−1), but the seasonal trend of variations was similar, the highest weight-specific egg production rates occurring in early summer and the lowest in autumn in both estuaries. Egg production was not correlated linearly with temperature since maximal egg production occurred at intermediate temperatures. In Mundaka, the egg production showed a significant positive correlation with the chlorophyll and the Chl/SPM and the POC/SPM ratios. This coupled with higher values of algal food availability (Chl a/SPM: 10 to 1870 μg g−1) and gut fluorescence (between 0.12 and 0.38 ng Chl a Eq ind−1) indicate that a herbivorous diet could cover the energy requirements of A. bifilosa and support egg production. In the Gironde, the algal food availability and the gut fluorescence were lower (Chl a/SPM: 10 to 80 μg g−1; GF: 0.09 and 0.25 ng Chl a Eq ind−1), and the egg production showed significant positive correlation with the particulate food value, suggesting that other sources of carbon rather than phytoplankton were responsible for the observed changes in egg production. Results indicate that the particular seston properties of each system may be responsible for the noticeable differences in A. bifilosa fertility among estuaries.  相似文献

Carbon isotope composition of suspended organic matter (CICSOM) and of organic carbon of the bottom sediments (CICBS) was studied in a series of expeditions (starting in 1993) to the White, Kara, Chukchi, and Barents seas in the Russian Arctic. For each sea, CICSOM and CICBS was found to depend primarily on the ratio of OM produced in the water and OM of terrigenous origin. While in the White Sea, where the primary production (PP) is 5.3 times higher than the yearly inflow of terrigenous OM, δ13C of SOM carbon is ?29.1‰, in the Chukchi Sea, where PP is more than 300 times higher than the inflow of terrigenous OM, δ13C of SOM carbon is ?21.8‰. In the Barents and Chukchi seas, a considerable effect of suspended material arriving with the currents from the neighboring seas on formation of the CICSOM was demonstrated. The difference between CIC OM of the bottom sediments form CICSOM, the main component of organic matter in the sediments of all shelf seas, was demonstrated for the first time for all the seas studied. This results from production of additional microbial OM due to CO2 assimilation at the water-sediment redox boundary or in near-bottom water.  相似文献

Background

Estuaries are highly productive ecosystems that can export organic matter to coastal seas (the ‘outwelling hypothesis’). However the role of this food resource subsidy on coastal ecosystem functioning has not been examined.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We investigated the influence of estuarine primary production as a resource subsidy and the influence of estuaries on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in coastal mollusk-dominated sediment communities. Stable isotope values (δ13C, δ15N) demonstrated that estuarine primary production was exported to the adjacent coast and contributed to secondary production up to 4 km from the estuary mouth. Further, isotope signatures of suspension feeding bivalves on the adjacent coast (Dosinia subrosea) closely mirrored the isotope values of the dominant bivalves inside the estuaries (Austrovenus stutchburyi), indicating utilization of similar organic matter sources. However, the food subsidies varied between estuaries; with estuarine suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) dominant at Tairua estuary, while seagrass and fringing vegetation detritus was proportionately more important at Whangapoua estuary, with lesser contributions of estuarine SPOM. Distance from the estuary mouth and the size and density of large bivalves (Dosinia spp.) had a significant influence on the composition of biological traits in the coastal macrobenthic communities, signaling the potential influence of these spatial subsidies on ecosystem functioning.

Conclusions/Significance

Our study demonstrated that the locations where ecosystem services like productivity are generated are not necessarily where the services are utilized. Further, we identified indirect positive effects of the nutrient subsidies on biodiversity (the estuarine subsidies influenced the bivalves, which in turn affected the diversity and functional trait composition of the coastal sediment macrofaunal communities). These findings highlight the importance of integrative ecosystem-based management that maintains the connectivity of estuarine and coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

The metal–thiolate connectivity of recombinant Cd7-MT10 metallothionein from the sea mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis has been investigated for the first time by means of multinuclear, multidimensional NMR spectroscopy. The internal backbone dynamics of the protein have been assessed by the analysis of 15N T 1 and T 2 relaxation times and steady state {1H}–15N heteronuclear NOEs. The 113Cd NMR spectrum of mussel MT10 shows unique features, with a remarkably wide dispersion (210 ppm) of 113Cd NMR signals. The complete assignment of cysteine Hα and Hβ proton resonances and the analysis of 2D 113Cd–113Cd COSY and 1H–113Cd HMQC type spectra allowed us to identify a four metal–thiolate cluster (α-domain) and a three metal–thiolate cluster (β-domain), located at the N-terminal and the C-terminal, respectively. With respect to vertebrate MTs, the mussel MT10 displays an inversion of the α and β domains inside the chain, similar to what observed in the echinoderm MT-A. Moreover, unlike the MTs characterized so far, the α-domain of mussel Cd7-MT10 is of the form M4S12 instead of M4S11, and has a novel topology. The β-domain has a metal–thiolate binding pattern similar to other vertebrate MTs, but it is conformationally more rigid. This feature is quite unusual for MTs, in which the β-domain displays a more disordered conformation than the α-domain. It is concluded that in mussel Cd7-MT10, the spacing of cysteine residues and the plasticity of the protein backbone (due to the high number of glycine residues) increase the adaptability of the protein backbone towards enfolding around the metal–thiolate clusters, resulting in minimal alterations of the ideal tetrahedral geometry around the metal centres.  相似文献

Fluxes of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus were determined in two areas of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, at a site influenced by the farming of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and a control site. Mussel farming induced intense biodeposition of organic matter to the underlying sediments, which stimulated sediment oxygen demand, and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus regeneration rates compared to the nearby control station. Overall benthic fluxes (–11.4 ± 6.5 mmol O2 m−2 h−1; 1.59 ± 0.47 mmol NH4+ m−2 h−1 and 94 ± 42 μmol PO43− m−2 h−1) at the mussel farm are amongst the highest ever recorded for an aquaculture impacted area and question the belief that farming of filter-feeding bivalves has inherently lower impacts than finfish farming. In situ incubations of intact mussel ropes demonstrated that the mussel rope community was an enormous sink for oxygen and particulate organic matter, and an equally large source of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate to the water column. Overall, a one meter square area of␣mussel farm (mussel ropes and underlying sediment) was estimated to have an oxygen demand of 46.8 mmol m2 h−1 and to regenerate inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus at rates of 8.5 and 0.3 mmol m2 h−1, with the mussel ropes accounting for between 70 and more than 90% of the overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Even taking into account that within the farmed area of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, there are 15–20 m−2 of open water for each one covered with mussel ropes, the mussel ropes would account for a large and often dominant part of overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. These results demonstrate that it is essential to take into account the activity of the cultivated organisms and their epiphytic community when assessing the impacts of shellfish farming. Overall, whilst grazing by the mussel rope community could act as a top-down control on the phytoplankton, most of the ingested organic matter is rapidly recycled to the water column as inorganic nutrients, which would be expected to stimulate phytoplankton growth. Consequently, the net effect of the mussel farming on phytoplankton dynamics, may be to increase phytoplankton turnover and overall production, rather than to limit phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Many studies on the biology of bivalves have focused on identifying the importance of various environmental factors in regulating feeding behaviour in order to predict ingestion and growth responses in a variety of habitats. When taking into consideration the diversity of studies undertaken and the variety of methodologies employed, it is perhaps not surprising that there have been inconsistencies in both interspecific and intraspecific comparisons. In order to compare and contrast the way in which feeding activities of a mussel species (Mytilus edulis) and a scallop species (Placopecten magellanicus) respond to environmental factors and seston characteristics, we exposed both species simultaneously to a fluctuating assemblage of natural particles found in their local environment. Similar sizes of mussels (40-73 mm) and scallops (40-88 mm) were held in flow through chambers at two different sites in Atlantic Canada on four separate occasions, during which environmental conditions, including seston characteristics, were monitored and individual clearance rates were measured. Because the same individuals were measured over time, repeated-measures statistical procedures were used to analyze the data. Results indicate that weight standardized clearance rates of mussels were significantly higher than those of scallops only at the highest concentration tested (12.8 mg l− 1), which translates into almost 3 times more material being filtered. Scallops appeared to respond to fluctuations in environment parameters and suspended food particles more consistently than mussels. These data suggest that the feeding behaviour of these two species is mediated differently by the same environmental parameters. Our study also demonstrates the importance of selecting appropriate statistical tests (e.g., repeated measures) for the analyses of data obtained from repeated sampling of the same individuals over time, and the need to consider species-specific feeding responses when developing models that predict the influence of bivalve feeding on ecosystem function.  相似文献

To establish if nutrients limit the growth of bivalves requires information not only on the quality of food available, but also the animals' feeding behaviour and endogenous metabolic demands. We hypothesized that growth of the Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) would vary in response to seasonal changes in food quality rather than quantity. We also predicted that the oysters would show feeding preferences for nitrogen over carbon, and this behaviour would result in carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios for ingested and absorbed matter that would be lower than the C/N of both the seston and the oysters' estimated metabolic maintenance requirements. The experiments were done in two phases under natural conditions. In phase 1, feeding behaviour was assessed on a single occasion and the results used to pose hypotheses for testing in phase 2, which included measurements made on three occasions encompassing autumn, winter and spring conditions. Growth rates varied with changes in ambient food quality and not with the concentration of total suspended matter. Feeding behaviour responded to food quality and, in most cases, resulted in nitrogen enrichment. For example, when nitrogen was potentially limiting to growth and/or maintenance, due to high food C/N (July) or high nitrogen demand (March), pre-ingestive selection ensured nitrogen enrichment of ingested matter and C/N ratios of ingested matter which were below the maintenance requirement. However, in November, when endogenous demands indicated an increased requirement for carbon, feeding behaviour resulted in carbon enrichment, an increase in carbon conversion efficiency, and ingested C/N ratios greater than the maintenance requirement. The results support the assertion of variable feeding physiology in oysters, responsive to both exogenous (seasonal differences in carbon and nitrogen availability) and endogenous (cycles of reproduction and growth) factors.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to evaluate effects of supplementation of calcium salts of long chain fatty acids (Ca-LCFA) as a rumen inert fat (PF) on in vitro fermentation and apparent nutrient digestion in adult buffaloes fed wheat straw based diets. For the in vitro fermentation study, five total mixed rations (TMR) consisting of a concentrate mixture (CM), green Sorghum bicolor, WS and supplemented without (C) or with 30 g/kg dry matter (DM) rice bran fatty acid oil (RBO) (30 RBO) or 20 g/kg RBO + 10 g/kg PF (20 RBO/10 PF) or 10 g/kg RBO + 20 g/kg PF (10 RBO/20 PF) or 30 g/kg PF in the DM in the ratio of 340:50:580:30 were prepared. The in vitro DM degradability (IVDMD), TN, trichloro acetic acid precipitable N (TCA-N), non-protein N (NPN) and ammonia N (NH3-N) were similar among groups. Within the fat supplemented groups, total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) concentration increased linearly (P=0.025) with PF supplementation. Apparent nutrient digestibility was determined on 20 adult buffaloes divided into five equal groups fed CM supplemented without (C) or with 300 g RBO (30 RBO) or 200 g RBO + 100 g PF (20 RBO/10 PF) or 100 g RBO + 200 g PF (10 RBO/20 PF) or 300 g PF (30 PF) along with limited green S. bicolor and WS maintaining forage: concentrate ratio of 650:350. Fat supplementation had no effect on the DM intake and apparent digestibilities of DM, organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), total carbohydrate (TCHO) and neutral detergent fiber (aNDF). Within fat supplemented groups, inclusion of PF increased digestibilities of DM, OM, ether extract (EE), TCHO, aNDF and ADF. Supplemental fat also increased the digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) content of the diet, which also increased linearly with PF supplementation. All buffaloes were in positive N, Ca and P balances. We conclude that 200–300 g supplemental PF in the form of Ca-LCFA can be included in straw based diets fed to buffaloes to increase its energy density without adversely affecting DM intake and digestibility.  相似文献

The hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus sp. is demonstrated to incorporate inorganic CO2 from sea water. After ≈24 h incubation with H14CO2 the major part of the radioactivity is incorporated into macromolecules mostly in proteins but also in a notable lipidic fraction. 77 to 98% of this radioactivity is found in the gill and autoradiographs show that CO2 fixation is only observed in cells containing high concentrations of bacteria. The results endorse the hypothesis that the associated bacteria might provide a nutritional source for the mussel. The mussel is also able to absorb and incorporate dissolved amino acids. Heterotrophic processes involving dissolved organic matter may interfere with the autotrophic pathways. Beside its capability of feeding on particulate material, the mussel may be thus able to live on reduced carbon and nitrogen compounds synthesized by its associated bacteria as well as on dissolved organic compounds present in sea water. The effective participation of the different processes is probably related to the ecological conditions experienced by the mussel in vent areas.  相似文献

The ability of a wild strain of Scenedesmus obliquus, isolated from a heavy metal-contaminated environment, to remove Cd2+ from aqueous solutions was studied at several initial concentrations. Viable biomass removed metal to a maximum extent of 11.4 mgCd/g at 1 mgCd/l, with most Cd2+ being adsorbed onto the cell surface. A commercially available strain (ACOI 598) of the same microalga species was also exposed to the same Cd concentrations, and similar results were obtained for the maximum extent of metal removal. Heat-inactivated cells removed a maximum of 6.04 mgCd/g at 0.5 mgCd/l. The highest extent of metal removal, analyzed at various pH values, was 0.09 mgCd/g at pH 7.0. Both strains of the microalga tested have proven effective in removing a toxic heavy metal from aqueous solutions, hence supporting their choice for bioremediation strategies of industrial effluents.  相似文献
