Although recent studies have demonstrated that female crickets prefer novel males to previous mates, the relative contribution of pre- and postcopulatory behaviors to this advantage remain unknown, as do the reproductive consequences to males. I paired females either with previous or novel mates, and recorded the latency to mating and the time after mating at which the female removed the male's spermatophore, terminating sperm transfer. Females that mated with familiar males removed their spermatophores sooner than females that mated with novel males. Females paired with novel males also mated more quickly than females paired with familiar males, but this difference was not statistically significant. A molecular-based paternity analysis was used to determine whether the postcopulatory preference of females for novel males influences a male's fertilization success. Females were assigned to either mate three times with the same male and then once with a novel male, or four times with four different males. The paternity of the last male was higher when the female previously had mated repeatedly with the same male than when she had mated previously with different males. These results suggest that female spermatophore removal behavior influences male paternity such that novel males receive a fertility benefit.  相似文献

The possibility of sex and nymph discrimination by males was investigated in the cockroach,Nauphoeta cinerea (Olivier). A sexually mature male takes a courting position toward a sexually mature female when he comes into contact with her and recognizes her through antennal contact. In contrast, males often behave aggressively toward each other: they bite at each others; wings and/or legs, chase each other and antennate mutually. The male, however, does not show conspicuous behavior (mating behavior or aggressive behavior) toward nearby nymphs. The male produces audible sounds when he courts a sexually mature but non-receptive female who does not respond to his courtship behavior. We found that the male also stridulates after he repeatedly courts immature teneral females, males and (last-instar) nymphs. After the bodies of teneral insects are sclerotized, the male shows courship and stridulation behavior toward sexually mature but non-receptive females but not toward mature males and nymphs. At this stage the male begins to behave aggressively toward other post-teneral mature males. We think that the variability of the sexually mature male's behavior toward other conspecifics (courtship behavior toward female, aggressive behavior toward male and no conspicuous response toward nymph) results from the male's recognition of adult and nymph.  相似文献

We examined the decisions territorial male beaugregory damselfish (Stegastes leucostictus) make when presented with mating and aggressive situations simultaneously. Specifically, we testedhow males responded to simultaneous and consecutive presentationsof conspecific males and females in bottles. We hypothesizedthat (1) territorial males would show lower levels of courtshiptoward females when a competing male is also present comparedto when only the female is present and (2) territorial maleswould show higher levels of aggression toward intruding maleswhen a female is also present on their territories than whenonly the intruder is present. We predicted that males withhigh-quality breeding sites would court females and attackcompetitors more vigorously than males with low-quality breedingsites. Males on low-quality breeding sites exhibited fewerconspicuous courtship displays toward bottled females and alower bite rate toward bottled males than did the males onhigh-quality breeding sites. We concluded that poor breeding-sitequality was responsible for the decline in the most conspicuous aspects of both courtship and aggression. When presented simultaneouslywith a bottled male and a bottled female, defenders of bothbreeding-site types drastically reduced the number of courtshipdisplays and the amount of time they spent near the female.Thus, all aspects of courtship were reduced in the presenceof a male intruder. Time spent near the bottled male also decreased in these simultaneous presentations; however, this decreasewas less dramatic than the reduction in time spent near bottledfemales. Habitat quality did not affect these trade-off decisions,but the bite rate exhibited toward the bottled male increasedin the simultaneous presentations compared to the single presentations.Due to this increase in a territorial male's defensive behaviorwhen a female is present, we conclude that the presence of afemale temporarily increased the value of a territory. We suggestthat the possible loss of a territory to an intruding maletakes priority over the potential benefits of successfullycourting a single female and that it is a male's future reproduction,as well as his current reproduction, by which he assesses hisbenefits.  相似文献

The guarding of females approaching a limited period of sexual receptivity is a common mating tactic of males. In many decapod crustaceans, such as the shrimp Palaemonetes pugio , females can only copulate during a short period after a reproductive molt. It has been predicted that mate guarding by males (pre-copula) evolves in such species if sex ratios are not highly female-biased and if males can detect the molt stage of the female. The mating tactics of males were investigated in P. pugio . Time-lapse video observations were made on interactions among two males, a pre-molt female, and an inter-molt female (20 replicates). There was no evidence that males recognized a pre-molt female until 24 h before its molt. Significant numbers of male contacts with pre-molt females occurred 1 h before and after the female molt. Copulation took place within 1–3 min of the molt. No behavior commonly associated with mate guarding in decapods was observed – no clasping, agonistic behavior, or close association. It is concluded that the male's mating tactic is pure searching, wherein males haphazardly contact many females in order to find a receptive one. The high encounter rate in nature of these very mobile, aggregated shrimps is proposed as the factor responsible for the evolution of pure searching. It is hypothesized that pure searching is the male tactic of the many species of decapod shrimps with small males, sexually monomorphic cheliped weapons, and aggregated populations.  相似文献

Parthenogenetic populations of the gecko Lepidodactylus lugubris are widespread throughout Polynesia. They often occur parapatrically, and occasionally syntopically, with the increasingly rare bisexual populations. In these instances, a small number of hybrid individuals occur and include both "female" and "male" external phenotypes, both with greatly reduced gonads. Histological examination demonstrates that these hybrids possess small ovotestes. The differentiation of the cortical tissue is identical in both "male" and "female" hybrids, but the medullary tissue is more developed in "males." The remainder of the genital tract in "females" resembles that of fertile females in the parthenogenetic and bisexual populations. By contrast, the "male" hybrids are markedly intersexual. In one of the two specimens autopsied, the hemipenes are more or less the same size as those of bisexual males, and the sexual segment of the kidney is hypertrophied and serous. In the other hybrid "male," the hemipenes have a structure similar to that seen in females, and the sexual segment of the kidney is poorly differentiated. In both hybrid "males," the ductus deferens is extremely narrow and further reduced in its middle portion; oviducts are present and resemble those of normal or hybrid females. Thus, embryonic-like gonads are associated with complete and normal female reproductive ducts in hybrid "females." Hybrid "males" also have embryonic-like gonads and feminized genital ducts but associated with secondary sexual characters that match those of sexually active or quiescent normal males.  相似文献

The social organization, nightly movements and nesting behaviour of Wood mice. Apodemus sylvaticus (L.), were studied by radio-tracking 35 individuals in a deciduous wood in north-east Scotland. The radios, which were mounted on collars and weighed 2·4 g, were only attached to mice weighing more than 20 g. During the breeding season (mid-March to December), when all the mice tracked were reproductively active, male ranges were on average 3·6 times as big (5110 m2) as those of females (1424 m2); male ranges overlapped considerably whilst females probably maintained ranges largely exclusive of one another. The ranges of males overlapped those of females apparently at random, each male's range encompassing parts of about five to ten females' ranges. Individuals' ranges changed position with time, although no total displacements were noted. No long-term bisexual associations were recorded. Nests appeared to be located at random within ranges, and nest sites were changed frequently. In summer, mice nested solitarily, whilst in winter they nested in groups of up to at least three. Typically, mice moved extensively over their ranges each night, males moving further between successive radio-fixes than females, and having fewer activity loci. Throughout the year, mice occasionally left their normal home ranges on excursions, sometimes over 100 m in length.  相似文献

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that male primates in multi-male/multi-female social groups with a clear male dominance hierarchy have a better chance of mating when the number of estrous females is equal to or greater than, as opposed to less than, the males' ordinal rank. I studied a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata fuscata) troop during mating seasons from 1992 to 1995. The mean daily operational sex ratio (OSR; the number of estrous females per troop male), which was calculated on observation days, was 0.21, 1.9, 0.48, and 3.1 in 1992-1995, respectively. Overall, focal animal sampling of males yielded 118 male-day records. The male-day records for each male were divided into the two estrous female number conditions: 1) the male-day records when the number of estrous females was equal to or greater than the male's ordinal rank, and 2) the male-day records when the number of estrous females was less than the male's ordinal rank. In the 1993 and 1995 mating seasons, when the number of estrous females was equal to or greater than the ordinal rank of each male, all of the males were observed mating. Conversely, when the number of estrous females was less than the ordinal rank of some male, they were not observed mating in the 1992 and 1994 mating seasons. The percentage for each male across each male's total mating opportunity was <20% when the number of estrous females was less than the male's ordinal rank. By contrast, the percentage for each male across each male's total mating opportunity exceeded 45% when the number of estrous females was equal to or greater than the male's ordinal rank, except for one male. Of all the male-day records for males observed mating with ejaculation, 41 were obtained when the number of estrous females was equal to or greater than the male's rank; conversely, only three records were obtained when the number of estrous females was less than the male's ordinal rank. Therefore, it appears that males have a better chance of mating when the number of estrous females is equal to or greater than the males' ordinal rank, as opposed to when the number is less than their ordinal rank.  相似文献

In many polygynous species, males typically direct more intensecourtship toward more fecund females. Here we examined thisbehavior in relation to the attractiveness of a male's resource.We used the territorial polygynous beaugregory damselfish (Stegastesleucostictus) and manipulated the quality of male breeding territorieswith two types of artificial sites. We also investigated variablenatural breeding territories. Previous studies have shown thatthese different breeding sites were of different qualities,as judged by the number of eggs accrued by the defending male.Males on all three types of breeding sites did court females,and males using the highest quality sites exhibited significantlyhigher courtship intensity. However, only the group of maleson the highest quality site-type modulated their courtship intensityto female quality (i.e., female size). This indicates that males requiredsome minimal level of resource attractiveness (i.e., a threshold) beforethey exhibited mate preferences based on female quality. Further differencesin the resource attractiveness for males defending the high-qualityartificial sites were not related to differences in courtship behavior.  相似文献

1. Territoriality is commonly associated with resource defence polygyny, where males are expected to gain access to females by anticipating how resources will influence female distribution and competing for resource-rich sites to establish their zone of dominance. 2. We tested this hypothesis in European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) by simultaneously assessing the influence of resources on female distribution and the influence of female distribution on male distribution and breeding success using paternity analyses. 3. Females did not fully distribute themselves among male territories in relation to resources. As a result, relative female abundance in a male's territory depended on territory size, but not on its habitat quality. In turn, relative female abundance in a male's territory determined, at least partially, his breeding success. 4. Interestingly, male territory size, and hence access to females, was partly determined by male body mass (all males) and by residual antler size (subadults only). The latter result suggests that large antlers may be important to young males for establishing their first territory, which is then usually retained for all subsequent reproductive seasons. 5. To conclude, although territoriality of male roe deer has certainly evolved as a tactic for ensuring access to mates, our results suggest that it does not really conform to a conventional resource defence polygyny strategy, as males seem to gain no obvious benefit from defending a territory in an area of high habitat quality in terms of enhanced access to mates. 6. This may explain the stability of male territories between years, suggesting that male territoriality conforms to an 'always stay' and 'low risk-low gain' mating strategy in roe deer.  相似文献

The mating behaviour and male mating success of Hyla ebraccata were examined over three study periods. Mated males were larger than unmated males on a significant number of nights and for one of the three study periods. In field observations of pair formation, female behaviour was consistent with choice of large males: females moved freely through the chorus, remaining within 10 cm of males larger than the nightly mean, before the male initiated amplexus. In 27% (n = 3) of these observations, males chased and fought over the female. However, the females removed two of these three males from amplexus, suggesting that females can also exercise choice after amplexus. There was a significant negative correlation between male size and dominant frequency of the primary note, indicating that the male's advertisement call contained size-related information. Comparisons of the size of mated and unmated males suggest that two factors may have affected the degree to which female choice influenced male mating success. First, the distance between calling males may have limited the opportunity for females to express a mating preference. Secondly, an increase in mean and a decrease in the variance of male size in one of the three study periods also may have limited the ability of females to express a preference for large males.  相似文献

为探讨野桐属(Mallotus)雌雄异株的进化和传粉机制,对白背叶(Mallotus apelta)野生居群的性系统和传粉生物学进行了研究。结果表明,所调查的白背叶居群均由雌性(F)、雄性(M)和少数两性(B)个体组成,平均性比为1:0.66:0.18(F:M:B);3种性别植株的基径大小差异不显著;雌株与两性植株的单花胚珠数、单果结籽数和自然结实率无显著差异;雄株与两性植株的花粉萌发率、花粉组织化学和花粉微形态特征也无显著差异,但雄株的单花花粉量是两性植株的1.26~1.63倍,且差异显著;雌株的异交结实率为96.67%,两性植株的异交结实率为76.00%,两者差异显著,说明居群内雌株的潜在种子生产力明显高于两性植株;野外观察到雄株和两性植株上的雄花具有访花者而雌株没有;雌株经套网处理后结实率超过30%而套袋处理不结实。这些表明白背叶具典型的亚雌雄异株性系统,雌株和雄株的适合度均高于两性植株;雌株以风媒传粉结实,两性植株可能兼有风媒和虫媒传粉特征。  相似文献

Observations made in an outdoor cage showed that most pairings of the grape borerXylotrechus pyrrhoderus Bates were formed via inflight orientation of females towards pheromone-releasing males. The male sex pheromone induced orientation behavior in flying females, as well as walking approaches and prolonged lingering periods near the pheromone source in alighting females. When an approaching female failed to elicit any response in a male (e.g., when the male was copulating), she touched and sometimes mounted him. This behavior stimulated the males and often resulted in successful copulation. The male usually inseminated the second female, and the male's fitness increased when the second mating occurred more than 5 min after the start of the firt mating. These results suggest that male-like behavior in females (i.e., approaching and mounting behavior) has biological significance. The grape borer sometimes forms pairs via incidental encounters of the sexes. This is the same as the prevailing mating system of cerambycids. It is suggested that the male sex pheromonemediated mating system of the grape borer developed from the prevailing system of cerambycid groups.  相似文献

Should a female copy the mate choice of other females? A female may rank a mated male higher in quality than an unmated male because the former has demonstrated that he is able to attract a female. However, a prospecting female may also avoid a mated male because of the risk that she has to compete with the male's initial mate over access to copulations, breeding resources and male parental care. We studied the mate choice of female pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca, in aviaries divided into three compartments, two for males, and one for a female. A female was allowed to choose (build a nest in a nestbox) between two males after a period when she had been kept in a cage behind a one-way mirror and had presumably seen that one of the males was in the company of another female for 5 h. There was no evidence that females copied the mate choice of conspecific females, or that they avoided males that had recently been in the company of another female. Instead, females apparently chose a mate independently of others, choosing the male showing most courtship display. The latter result explains the consistency in mate choice observed when different females chose between the same pair of males in repeat trials. The ability of females to pick out the same male independently may also explain why a few males obtain most copulations in lekking species. The repeated findings that levels of various male-typical behaviors (e.g., copulatory behavior and intermale aggression) are reduced in prenatally stressed (P-S) males, coupled with reports of effects on female physiology and behavior, prompted us to examine the maternal behaviors of P-S animals toward young. Sprague-Dawley female rats were timed-mated (+ sperm = Day 1). From Gestation Days 15 to 22 experimental females were subjected to heat and restraint stress. Control females remained undisturbed throughout pregnancy. The offspring, as adults, were assessed for maternal behavior. P-S males exhibited a significantly shorter latency (in days) to show full maternal behavior (FMB) than Control males, median = 5.0 vs 8.0, respectively. P-S females, on the other hand, exhibited a significantly longer latency than Control females to show FMB (7.0 vs 3.0, respectively). as well as longer latencies to retrieve one, two, or three pups, to begin to crouch over pups, and to build nests in response to young. Sex differences were apparent between Control males and Control females (females were more responsive to young). In contrast, P-S males and Control females exhibited similar latencies to show components of FMB (3-5 days), as did P-S females and Control males (7-9 days). These data demonstrate, therefore, that prenatal stress eliminates the sex difference normally observed in pup-induced maternal behavior. Moreover, the data suggest that prenatal stress renders the male's responsiveness to young more "female-like," while conversely rendering the response of the female more "male-like."  相似文献

The effect of hormones on the development of Japanese quail during the postembryonic period was examined. First, subcutaneous implants of estradiol monobenzoate (EB) and testosterone propionate (TP) were implanted 6–12 hr after hatching. EB and TP had no effect on the differentiation of sexual behavior in genetic males or females. However, EB had marked feminizing effects on plumage in genetic males. Second, the role of gonadal hormones during development was examined by gonadectomizing males and females 6–12 hr after hatching and treating them intramuscularly with EB or TP as adults. EB-treated adult females displayed sexual behavior typical of the genetic female and developed female plumage. A significant proportion of TP-treated females (57%) displayed male sexual behavior patterns. Cloacal gland development and male-type vocalizations were induced. EB-treated males displayed either male or female sexual patterns depending on the stimulus conditions. Third, to test whether bisexuality in gonadectomized males and females is maintained despite steroid treatment and expression of sexual behavior in adulthood, gonadectomized quail which were originally treated with EB received TP and vice versa. The results indicate that in the absence of gonadal hormones after hatching female quail remain bisexual until exposed to estrogen, whereas gonadectomized male quail retain behavioral bisexuality irrespective of prior estrogen or androgen exposure.  相似文献

Mating behavior and the male's contribution to female fecundity were studied in the bean weevil Bruchidius dorsalis (Fahraeus) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) in comparison with two other species, Callosobruchus chinensis (which infests stored beans) and Kytorhinus sharpianus (which feeds on wild legumes). Only females of B. dorsalis showed multiple mating and characteristic precopulatory behavior that appeared to solicit the male's nutritious secretion. In contrast, all females of the other two species did not copulate multiply and did not show such precopulatory behavior. In B. dorsalis, the decrement of male body weight just after copulation indicated that seminal fluid weighing as much as approximately 7% of the male's body weight was transferred to the female. Fecundity was more than eight times higher in females that had copulated ten times than in females that had copulated only once, indicating that males paid most of the nutritional cost of egg production. Precopulatory behaviour of adult male rats towards the passively receptive and towards the ovariectomized females was observed in dyadic interaction, first, at the time when the males were sexually inexperienced and later on after they had gained small and uniform copulatory experience (with a darting female). It was found that precopulatory activity of the sexually inexperienced males towards the ovariectomized female was "higher and richer" than that of males exposed to the passively receptive female. When the males were sexually experienced the frequency of precopulatory behavior increased and the patterns changed only in the animals exposed to the passively receptive female. Precopulatory activity of males weakened during the interaction under all experimental conditions. It is remarkable, however, that the weakening of precopulatory activity of sexually inexperienced males exposed to the ovariectomized female was reinforced again after the female temporarily exhibited behaviour typical of the male. We concluded that both the quality of the female's precopulatory behaviour and the quantity of previous male's experience are the decisive factors in successful interaction.  相似文献

We studied the frequency of multiple paternity for American lobster (Homarus americanus) at three Canadian sites differing in exploitation rate and mean adult size. The probability of detecting multiple paternity using four microsatellite loci and 100 eggs per female was in excess of 99% under various scenarios of paternal contribution. Overall, 13% of the 108 examined females carried a clutch sired by two or three males. Multiple paternity was observed at the two most exploited sites (11% at Magdalen Islands and 28% at Grand Manan Island), whereas single paternity only was observed at the least exploited site (Anticosti Island). Within populations females with a clutch sired by more than one male tended to be smaller than females with a clutch sired by a single male. Based on these and other findings, we postulate a link between female promiscuity and sperm limitation in the American lobster.  相似文献

Single larval inoculations of both the citrus and banana races of Radopholus similis from Florida indicate parthenogenetic reproduction is possible. These races normally reproduce amphimictieally. Both races produced all-female populations from single larva inoculations after 80 d and male-female populations after 180 d. The all-female populations produced female progeny with viable eggs, but no spermatozoa were present in the spermatheca, indicating tychoparthenogenesis occurred. Uninseminated females in the latter study produced both male and female progeny. Approximately 95% of the female progeny of the male-female populations were inseminated, indicating that cross-fertilization had occurred. The proportion of males to females was as expected in a normal bisexual population. No intersex males were observed. The mechanism of sex determination is not fully understood but assumed to be enviromnentally induced.  相似文献

Synopsis We document differences in the use of microhabitats, male courtship behavior, and swimming performance of populations from headwater and downstream sites in two rivers of the Oropuche drainage in Trinidad. Guppies from headwater sites used microhabitats with higher water velocities, had a higher swimming performance, and were less patchily distributed than guppies from downstream sites. Although males from the headwater and downstream sites had similar display rates, males from headwater sites displayed in microhabitats with higher velocities (riffles) whereas males in downstream sites courted in still pools. Subtle effects of female choice maintain the honesty of male courtship behavior in various microhabitats. In downstream sites, where predators impose a survivorship cost on ornamental males, swimming performance was positively correlated with area of carotenoid ornamentation. In headwater sites, males frequently displayed in fast-flowing water, thus paid a higher metabolic cost of courtship. Interactions between characteristics of the physical habitat and predation pressure not only affect the distribution of guppies, but also have subtle effects on the types of condition-dependent traits favored by females.  相似文献
