The purpose of the experiment was to investigate the genotype dependency of body composition and adipose tissue metabolism following short-term exercise-training. Six pairs of male, sedentary monozygotic twins took part in a 22 day ergocycle training program at 58% VO2max, with a mean exercise duration of 116 min x day-1. Body weight, fat mass, percent body fat and VO2max, were evaluated before and after the training program. From a suprailiac region fat biopsy, the following adipose tissue metabolic variables were evaluated: fat cell diameter, basal and epinephrine stimulated lipolysis, basal and insulin stimulated lipogenesis from glucose and heparin releasable lipoprotein lipase activity. The exercise-training program increased (p less than 0.01) VO2max and decreased (p less than 0.01) body weight, fat mass and percent body fat. Variation in response within twin pairs was not significantly different than response between pairs in the aforementioned variables. However, a significant within pair resemblance (p less than 0.01) for changes in fat free mass was observed. Adipose tissue metabolic indicators exhibited a large interindividual variation in response to exercise-training. Significant within twin pair resemblance was observed only for basal lipogenesis. Moreover, the non significant within twin pair resemblance for changes in body fat and adipose tissue metabolic indicators suggests that heredity is not a major factor influencing changes in body fat and adipose tissue indicators to short-term training resulting in negative energy balance. Changes in fat free mass were, however, closely coupled to the genotype.  相似文献

Thirteen male volunteers performed cycle ergometer maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max tests) in moderate (21 degrees C, 30% rh) and hot (49 degrees C, 20% rh) environments, before and after a 9-day heat acclimation program. This program resulted in significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) final heart rate (24 bt X min-1) and rectal temperature (0.4 degrees C) from the first to last day of acclimation. The VO2max was lower (P less than 0.01) in the hot environment relative to the moderate environment both before (8%) and after (7%) acclimation with no significant difference (P greater than 0.05) shown for maximal power output (PO max, watts) between environments either before or after acclimation. The VO2max was higher (P less than 0.01) by 4% after acclimation in both environments. Also, PO max was higher (P less than 0.05) after acclimation in both the moderate (4%) and hot (2%) environments. The reduction in VO2max in the hot compared to moderate environment was not related to the difference in core temperature at VO2max between moderate and hot trials, nor was it strongly related with aerobic fitness level. These findings indicate that heat stress, per se, reduced the VO2max. Further, the reduction in VO2max due to heat was not affect be state of heat acclimation, the degree of elevation in core temperature, or level of aerobic fitness.  相似文献

We have previously shown that cardiorespiratory fitness predicts increasing fat mass during growth in white and African-American youth, but limited data are available examining this issue in Hispanic youth. Study participants were 160 (53% boys) overweight (BMI>or=85th percentile for age and gender) Hispanic children (mean+/-s.d. age at baseline=11.2+/-1.7 years). Cardiorespiratory fitness, assessed by VO2max, was measured through a maximal effort treadmill test at baseline. Body composition through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and Tanner stage through clinical exam were measured at baseline and annually thereafter for up to 4 years. Linear mixed models were used to examine the gender-specific relationship between VO2max and increases in adiposity (change in fat mass independent of change in lean tissue mass) over 4 years. The analysis was adjusted for changes in Tanner stage, age, and lean tissue mass. In boys, higher VO2max at baseline was inversely associated with the rate of increase in adiposity (beta=-0.001, P=0.03); this effect translates to a 15% higher VO2max at baseline resulting in a 1.38 kg lower fat mass gain over 4 years. However, VO2max was not significantly associated with changes in fat mass in girls (beta=0.0002, P=0.31). In overweight Hispanic boys, greater cardiorespiratory fitness at baseline was protective against increasing adiposity. In girls however initial cardiorespiratory fitness was not significantly associated with longitudinal changes in adiposity. These results suggest that cardiorespiratory fitness may be an important determinant of changes in adiposity in overweight Hispanic boys but not in girls.  相似文献

Stroke volume (SV) increases above the resting level during exercise and then declines at higher intensities of exercise in sedentary subjects. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an attenuation of the decline in SV at higher exercise intensities contributes to the increase in maximal cardiac output (Qmax) that occurs in response to endurance training. We studied six men and six women, 25 +/- 1 (SE) yr old, before and after 12 wk of endurance training (3 days/wk running for 40 min, 3 days/wk interval training). Cardiac output was measured at rest and during exercise at 50 and 100% of maximal O2 uptake (Vo2max) by the C2H2-rebreathing method. VO2max was increased by 19% (from 2.7 +/- 0.2 to 3.2 +/- 0.3 l/min, P less than 0.001) in response to the training program. Qmax was increased by 12% (from 18.1 +/- 1 to 20.2 +/- 1 l/min, P less than 0.01), SV at maximal exercise was increased by 16% (from 97 +/- 6 to 113 +/- 8 ml/beat, P less than 0.001) and maximal heart rate was decreased by 3% (from 185 +/- 2 to 180 +/- 2 beats/min, P less than 0.01) after training. The calculated arteriovenous O2 content difference at maximal exercise was increased by 7% (14.4 +/- 0.4 to 15.4 +/- 0.4 ml O2/100 ml blood) after training. Before training, SV at VO2max was 9% lower than during exercise at 50% VO2max (P less than 0.05). In contrast, after training, the decline in SV between 50 and 100% VO2max was only 2% (P = NS). Furthermore, SV was significantly higher (P less than 0.01) at 50% VO2max after training than it was before. Left ventricular hypertrophy was evident, as determined by two-dimensional echocardiography at the completion of training. The results indicate that in young healthy subjects the training-induced increase in Qmax is due in part to attenuation of the decrease in SV as exercise intensity is increased.  相似文献

Recent evidence suggests that heavy exercise may lower the percentage of O2 bound to hemoglobin (%SaO2) by greater than or equal to 5% below resting values in some highly trained endurance athletes. We tested the hypothesis that pulmonary gas exchange limitations may restrict VO2max in highly trained athletes who exhibit exercise-induced hypoxemia. Twenty healthy male volunteers were divided into two groups according to their physical fitness status and the demonstration of exercise-induced reductions in %SaO2 less than or equal to 92%: 1) trained (T), mean VO2max = 56.5 ml.kg-1.min-1 (n = 13) and 2) highly trained (HT) with maximal exercise %SaO2 less than or equal to 92%, mean VO2max = 70.1 ml.kg-1.min-1 (n = 7). Subjects performed two incremental cycle ergometer exercise tests to determine VO2max at sea level under normoxic (21% O2) and mild hyperoxic conditions (26% O2). Mean %SaO2 during maximal exercise was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) during hyperoxia compared with normoxia in both the T group (94.1 vs. 96.1%) and the HT group (90.6 vs. 95.9%). Mean VO2max was significantly elevated (P less than 0.05) during hyperoxia compared with normoxia in the HT group (74.7 vs. 70.1 ml.kg-1.min-1). In contrast, in the T group, no mean difference (P less than 0.05) existed between treatments in VO2max (56.5 vs. 57.1 ml.kg-1.min-1). These data suggest that pulmonary gas exchange may contribute significantly to the limitation of VO2max in highly trained athletes who exhibit exercise-induced reductions in %SaO2 at sea level.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The so-called velocity associated with VO2max, defined as the minimal velocity which elicits VO2max in an incremental exercise protocol (v(VO2max)), is currently used for training to improve VO2max. However, it is well known that it is not the sole velocity which elicits VO2max and it is possible to achieve VO2max at velocities lower and higher than v(VO2max). The goal of this study was to determine the velocity which allows exercise to be maintained the longest time at v(VO2max). Using the relationship between time to exhaustion at VO2max in the all-out runs at 90%, 100%, 120% and 140% of v(VO2max) and distance run at VO2max, the velocity which elicits the longest time to exhaustion at VO2max (CV') was determined. For the six subjects tested (physical education students), this velocity was not significantly different from v(VO2max) (16.96+/-0.92 km x h(-1) vs 17.22+/-1.12 km x h(-1), P = 0.2 for CV' and v(VO2max), respectively) and these two velocities were correlated (r = 0.88, P = 0.05).  相似文献

Chromium excretion of eight trained and five sedentary men was determined on rest days and after exercise to exhaustion at 90% of maximum O2 consumption (VO2max) to determine if degree of physical fitness affects urinary Cr losses. Subjects were fed a constant daily diet containing approximately 9 micrograms Cr/1,000 kcal. VO2max of the trained runners was in the good or above range based on their age and that of the sedentary subjects was average or below. While consuming the control diet, basal urinary Cr excretion of subjects who exercise regularly was significantly lower than that of the sedentary control subjects, 0.09 +/- 0.01 and 0.21 +/- 0.03 microgram/day (mean +/- SE), respectively. When subjects consumed self-chosen diets, basal urinary Cr excretion of the trained subjects was also significantly lower than that of the untrained subjects. Daily urinary Cr excretion of trained subjects was significantly higher on the day of a single exercise bout at 90% VO2max compared with nonexercise days, 0.12 +/- 0.02 and 0.09 +/- 0.01 microgram/day, respectively. Urinary Cr excretion of sedentary subjects was not altered after controlled exercise. These data demonstrate that basal urinary Cr excretion and excretion in response to exercise are related to VO2max and therefore degree of physical fitness.  相似文献

First-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients (offspring) are often characterized by insulin resistance and reduced physical fitness (VO2 max). We determined the response of healthy first-degree relatives to a standardized 10-wk exercise program compared with an age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched control group. Improvements in VO2 max (14.1 +/- 11.3 and 16.1 +/- 14.2%; both P < 0.001) and insulin sensitivity (0.6 +/- 1.4 and 1.0 +/- 2.1 mg x kg(-1) x min(-1); both P < 0.05) were comparable in offspring and control subjects. However, VO2 max and insulin sensitivity in offspring were not related at baseline as in the controls (r = 0.009, P = 0.96 vs. r = 0.67, P = 0.002). Likewise, in offspring, exercise-induced changes in VO2 max did not correlate with changes in insulin sensitivity as opposed to controls (r = 0.06, P = 0.76 vs. r = 0.57, P = 0.01). Skeletal muscle oxidative capacity tended to be lower in offspring at baseline but improved equally in both offspring and controls in response to exercise training (delta citrate synthase enzyme activity 26 vs. 20%, and delta cyclooxygenase enzyme activity 25 vs. 23%. Skeletal muscle fiber morphology and capillary density were comparable between groups at baseline and did not change significantly with exercise training. In conclusion, this study shows that first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients respond normally to endurance exercise in terms of changes in VO2 max and insulin sensitivity. However, the lack of a correlation between the VO2 max and insulin sensitivity in the first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients indicates that skeletal muscle adaptations are dissociated from the improvement in VO2 max. This could indicate that, in first-degree relatives, improvement of insulin sensitivity is dissociated from muscle mitochondrial functions.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of exercise intensity and duration on the percent blood lymphocytes in men of low [LF; maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) less than 50 ml.kg-1.min-1 and sedentary], moderate (MF; VO2max = 50-60 ml.kg-1.min-1 and recreationally active), and high (HF; VO2max greater than 60 ml.kg-1.min-1 and recent training history) fitness. Thirty healthy adult men (aged 20-31 yr) participated in four randomly ordered cycle ergometer rides: ride 1 (65% VO2max, 30 min), ride 2 (30% VO2max, 60 min), ride 3 (75% VO2max, 60 min), and ride 4 (65% VO2max, 120 min). Blood samples were drawn at various times before and after the exercise sessions. Lymphocyte subsets were determined by flow cytometry using monoclonal antibodies for total T (CD3+), T-helper (CD4+), and T-suppressor (CD8+) lymphocytes and for a subset of cells expressing a natural killer (NK) cell antigen (Leu7+). Plasma catecholamines were assayed to determine exercise stress. There were sharp reductions (P less than 0.01) in the percentage of pan-T and T-helper lymphocytes immediately after exercise across all fitness levels; the magnitude of this reduction was greatest after the highest intensity (ride 3) or longest duration (ride 4) work. In contrast, the absolute number of T and T-helper cells tended to increase after exercise and significantly so in the HF subjects (P less than 0.005). There was no significant effect of exercise or subject fitness category on the percentage of T-suppressor lymphocytes, although the absolute numbers of this subset increased significantly after exercise in LF subjects. Marked increases (P less than 0.01) in the percentage of NK cells occurred immediately after exercise at all intensities and durations tested; numerical increases in total NK cells were significant in all fitness groups after the highest intensity work (ride 3; P less than 0.005). Irrespective of whether the changes were expressed as percentage or total numbers, recovery to base line occurred at 30 min after exercise. The results suggest that the exercise effect on blood lymphocyte subset percentages in men is transient and occurs across all fitness levels. Concomitant changes in plasma catecholamine concentrations are only weakly associated with these lymphocyte subset percentage responses to exercise. Furthermore, this study shows that the exercise-induced changes in lymphocyte percentages do not consistently reflect changes in the absolute numbers of cells.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of the American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM's) submaximal treadmill running test in predicting VO2max. Twenty-one moderately well-trained men aged 18-34 years performed 1 maximal treadmill test to determine maximal oxygen uptake (M VO2max) and 2 submaximal treadmill tests using 4 stages of continuous submaximal exercise. Estimated VO2max was predicted by extrapolation to age-predicted maximal heart rate (HRmax) and calculated in 2 ways: using data from all submaximal stages between 110 b·min(-1) and 85% HRmax (P VO2max-All), and using data from the last 2 stages only (P VO2max-2). The measured VO2max was overestimated by 3% on average for the group but was not significantly different to predicted VO2max (1-way analysis of variance [ANOVA] p = 0.695; M VO2max = 53.01 ± 5.38; P VO2max-All = 54.27 ± 7.16; P VO2max-2 = 54.99 ± 7.69 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)), although M VO2max was not overestimated in all the participants--it was underestimated in 30% of observations. Pearson's correlation, standard error of estimate (SEE), and total error (E) between measured and predicted VO2max were r = 0.646, 4.35, 4.08 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1) (P VO2max-All) and r = 0.642, 4.21, 3.98 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1) (P VO2max-2) indicating that the accuracy in prediction (error) was very similar whether using P VO2max-All or P VO2max-2, with up to 70% of the participants predicted scores within 1 SEE (~4 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) of M VO2max. In conclusion, the ACSM equation provides a reasonably good estimation of VO2max with no difference in predictive accuracy between P VO2max-2 and P VO2max-All, and hence, either approach may be equally useful in tracking an individual's aerobic fitness over time. However, if a precise knowledge of VO2max is required, then it is recommended that this be measured directly.  相似文献

The emergence of obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes in children requires a rational, effective public health response. Physical activity remains an important component of prevention and treatment for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance. Studies in adults show cardiovascular fitness to be more important than obesity in predicting insulin resistance. We recently demonstrated that a school-based fitness intervention in children who are overweight could improve cardiovascular fitness, body composition, and insulin sensitivity, but it remains unclear whether accurate assessment of fitness could be performed at the school or outside of an exercise laboratory. To determine whether new methodology using measurement of cycling power could estimate cardiovascular aerobic fitness (as defined by VO2max) in middle school children who were overweight. Thirty-five middle school children (mean age 12 +/- 0.4 years) who were overweight underwent testing on a power sensor-equipped Cycle Ops indoor cycle (Saris Cycling Group, Fitchburg, WI) as well as body composition by dual x-ray absorptiometry and VO2max by treadmill determination. Insulin sensitivity was also estimated by fasting glucose and insulin. Maximal heart rate (MHR) was determined during VO2max testing, and power produced at 80%MHR was recorded. Spearman's rank correlation was performed to evaluate associations. Mean power determined on the indoor cycle at 80% of MHR was 129 +/- 77 watts, and average power at 80% MHR divided by total body weight was 1.5 +/- 0.5. A significant correlation between watts and total body weight was seen for VO2max (P = 0.03), and significant negative correlation was seen between watts/total body weight and fasting insulin (P < 0.05). Among middle school children who were overweight, there was a significant relationship between the power component of fitness and cardiovascular aerobic fitness (measured by VO2max). This more accessible and less intimidating field-based measure of power may prove useful in predicting changes in cardiovascular fitness. Thus, accurate assessment of childhood aerobic fitness may be achievable by measurement of power, possibly within the school environment, at substantially less cost and effort than laboratory-based measurements.  相似文献

The maximal rate of O? consumption (VO? max) constitutes one of the oldest fitness indexes established for the measure of cardiorespiratory fitness and aerobic performance. Procedures have been developed in which VO? max is estimated from physiological responses during submaximal exercise. Generally, VO? max is estimated using the classical renowned Astrand-Ryhming test. In young adults, poor fitness and low aerobic performance are often associated with a sedentary lifestyle, which is a well-described factor for the development of obesity and its related disorders such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. In the Indian Ocean, the inhabitants of La Reunion Island, a French overseas department, exhibit an increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. At the University of La Reunion, a new laboratory course involving students was designed to teach the indirect evaluation of their VO? max from the classical Astrand-Ryhming test and using a cycle ergometer as the exercise mode. Inverse and significant correlations were established between the students' fat mass percentages and their VO? max and between their waist-to-hip ratio and VO? max as well. Results from the international physical activity questionnaire showed that most participants in this laboratory were sedentary students. Therefore, this laboratory makes the students practice and understand the use of a classical test to estimate their VO? max. It also alerts them to the correlation between a sedentary lifestyle and higher body fat content. This exercise allowed students to use a scientific method to engage the problem of sedentary lifestyle, which is a real world issue.  相似文献

Whereas novel pathways of pathological heart enlargement have been unveiled by thoracic aorta constriction in genetically modified mice, the molecular mechanisms of adaptive cardiac hypertrophy remain virtually unexplored and call for an effective and well-characterized model of physiological mechanical loading. Experimental procedures of maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2 max)) and intensity-controlled treadmill running were established in 40 female and 36 male C57BL/6J mice. An inclination-dependent VO(2 max) with 0.98 test-retest correlation was found at 25 degrees treadmill grade. Running for 2 h/day, 5 days/wk, in intervals of 8 min at 85-90% of VO(2 max) and 2 min at 50% (adjusted to weekly VO(2 max) testing) increased VO(2 max) to a plateau 49% above sedentary females and 29% in males. Running economy improved in both sexes, and echocardiography indicated significantly increased left ventricle posterior wall thickness. Ventricular weights increased by 19-29 and 12-17% in females and males, respectively, whereas cardiomyocyte dimensions increased by 20-32, and 17-23% in females and males, respectively; skeletal muscle mass increased by 12-18%. Thus the model mimics human responses to exercise and can be used in future studies of molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations.  相似文献

It has been suggested that genetic variation in the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene is associated with physical performance. We studied the association between the ACE insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism and several fitness phenotypes measured before and after 20 wk of a standardized endurance training program in sedentary Caucasian (n = 476) and black (n = 248) subjects. Phenotypes measured were oxygen uptake (VO(2)), work rate, heart rate, minute ventilation, tidal volume, and blood lactate levels during maximal and submaximal [50 W and at 60 and 80% of maximal VO(2) (VO(2 max))] exercise and stroke volume and cardiac output during submaximal exercise (50 W and at 60% VO(2 max)). The ACE ID polymorphism was typed with the three-primer PCR method. Out of 216 association tests performed on 54 phenotypes in 4 groups of participants, only 11 showed significant (P values from 0.042 to 0. 0001) associations with the ACE ID polymorphism. In contrast to previous claims, in Caucasian offspring, the DD homozygotes showed a 14-38% greater increase with training in VO(2 max), VO(2) at 80% of VO(2 max), and all work rate phenotypes and a 36% greater decrease in heart rate at 50 W than did the II homozygotes. No associations were evident in Caucasian parents or black parents or offspring. Thus these data do not support the hypothesis that the ACE ID polymorphism plays a major role in cardiorespiratory endurance.  相似文献

To study the effects of exercise intensity and duration on excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), 8 men [age = 27.6 (SD 3.8) years, VO2max = 46.1 (SD 8.5) ml min-1 kg-1] performed four randomly assigned cycle-ergometer tests (20 min at 60% VO2max, 40 min at 60% VO2max, 20 min at 70% VO2max, and 40 min at 70% VO2max). O2 uptake, heart rate and rectal temperature were measured before, during, and for 1 h following the exercise tests. Blood for plasma lactate measurements was obtained via cannulae before, and at selected times, during and following exercise. VO2 rapidly declined to preexercise levels following each of the four testing sessions, and there were no differences in EPOC between the sessions. Blood lactate and rectal temperature increased (P < 0.05) with exercise, but had returned to preexercise levels by 40 min of recovery. The results indicate that VO2 returned to resting levels within 40 min after the end of exercise, regardless of the intensity (60% and 70% VO2max) or duration (20 min and 40 min) of the exercise, in men with a moderate aerobic fitness level.  相似文献

Moderate physical training is often associated with improved cardiorespiratory fitness in athletes and the general population. In animals, studies are designed to investigate basic physiology that could be invasive and uncomfortable for humans. The standardization of an exercise training protocol for rats based on maximal consumption of oxygen (VO(2)max) is needed. This study validated a program of moderate physical training for Wistar rats based on VO(2)max determined once a week. A 10-stage treadmill running test was developed to measure VO(2)max through an indirect, open circuit calorimeter. Thirty male Wistar rats (210-226 g) were randomly assigned to either a nontrained group or a trained group. The animals were evaluated weekly to follow their VO(2)max during 8 weeks of moderate training and to adjust the intensity of the protocol of training. The soleus muscle was removed for determination of citrate synthase activity. Trained animals maintained their values of VO(2)max during a moderate running training and showed a significant less body weight gain. An increase of 42% in citrate synthase activity of the soleus muscle from trained rats was found after the training program. Our study presents a protocol of moderate physical training for Wistar rats based on VO(2)max. Peripheral adaptations such as the values of citrate synthase activity also responded to the moderate training program imposed as observed for VO(2)max. Other studies can use our protocol of moderate training to study the physiologic adaptations underlying this specific intensity of training. It will provide support for study with humans.  相似文献

This study investigated mechanisms used by horses and steers to increase O2 uptake and delivery (VO2) from resting to maximal rates and identified the mechanisms that enable horses to achieve higher maximal rates of O2 consumption (VO2max) than steers. VO2 and circulatory variables were measured while Standardbred trotting horses and steers (450-kg body mass) stood quietly and ran on a treadmill at speeds up to those eliciting VO2max. As VO2 increased in both species, heart rate and circulating hemoglobin (Hb) concentration increased, thereby increasing O2 delivery by the circulation, while cardiac stroke volume remained unchanged. At VO2max arterial PCO2 increased from its resting value in horses but was unchanged in steers, and arterial PO2 decreased in both species. Although the horses hypoventilated and were hypoxemic at VO2max, no significant decrease in arterial Hb saturation occurred. VO2max of the horses was 2.6 times higher than that of the steers and was associated with a 100% larger cardiac output, 100% larger stroke volume, and 40% higher Hb concentration, whereas heart rates at VO2max were identical in the two species. The higher cardiac output of the horses at VO2max resulted from a 1.2-fold higher mean arterial pressure and 1.6-fold lower peripheral tissue resistance (associated with a larger skeletal muscle capillary bed). Both the magnitude of the difference in VO2max between horses and steers and the mechanisms used to achieve it are the same as observed in smaller pairs of mammalian species with large variation in aerobic capacity.  相似文献

Controversy exists regarding the relative importance of adiposity, physical fitness, and physical activity in the regulation of insulin-stimulated glucose disposal. To address this issue, we measured insulin-stimulated glucose disposal [mg. kg fat-free mass (FFM)(-1). min(-1); oxidative and nonoxidative components] in 45 nondiabetic, nonobese, premenopausal women (mean +/- SD; 47 +/- 3 yr) by use of hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp (40 mU. m(-2). min(-1)) and [6,6-2H2]glucose dilution techniques. We also measured body composition, abdominal fat distribution, thigh muscle fat content, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max), and physical activity energy expenditure ((2)H(2)(18)O kinetics) as possible correlates of glucose disposal. VO2 max was the strongest correlate of glucose disposal (r = 0.63, P < 0.01), whereas whole body and abdominal adiposity showed modest associations (range of r values from -0.32 to -0.46, P < 0.05 to P < 0.01). A similar pattern of correlations was observed for nonoxidative glucose disposal. None of the variables measured correlated with oxidative glucose disposal. The relationship of VO2 max to glucose disposal persisted after statistical control for FFM, percent body fat, and intra-abdominal fat (r = 0.40, P < 0.01). In contrast, correlations of total and regional adiposity measures to insulin sensitivity were no longer significant after statistical adjustment for VO2 max. VO2 max was the only variable to enter stepwise regression models as a significant predictor of total and nonoxidative glucose disposal. Our results highlight the importance of VO2 max as a determinant of glucose disposal and suggest that it may be a stronger determinant of variation in glucose disposal than total and regional adiposity in nonobese, nondiabetic, premenopausal women.  相似文献

Physical inactivity and obesity: a vicious circle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Objective: Physical activity (PA) begins to decline in adolescence with a concomitant increase in weight. We hypothesized that a vicious circle may arise between decreasing PA and weight gain from adolescence to early adulthood. Methods and Procedures: PA and self‐perceived physical fitness assessed in adolescents (16–18 years of age) were used to predict the development of obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) and abdominal obesity (waist ≥88 cm in females and ≥102 cm in males) at age 25 in 4,240 twin individuals (90% of twins born in Finland, 1975–1979). Ten 25‐year‐old monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs who were discordant for obesity (with a 16 kg weight difference) were then carefully evaluated for current PA (using a triaxial accelerometer), total energy expenditure (TEE, assessed by means of the doubly labeled water (DLW) method), and basal metabolic rate (BMR, assessed by indirect calorimetry). Results: Physical inactivity in adolescence strongly predicted the risk for obesity (odds ratio (OR) 3.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.4–10.9) and abdominal obesity (4.8, 1.9–12.0) at age 25, even after adjusting for baseline and current BMI. Poor physical fitness in adolescence also increased the risk for overall obesity (5.1, 2.0–12.7) and abdominal obesity (3.2, 1.5–6.7) in adulthood. Physical inactivity was both causative and secondary to the development of obesity discordance in the MZ pairs. TEE did not differ between the MZ co‐twins. PA was lower whereas BMR was higher in the obese co‐twins. Discussion: Physical inactivity in adolescence strongly and independently predicts total (and especially) abdominal obesity in young adulthood, favoring the development of a self‐perpetuating vicious circle of obesity and physical inactivity. Physical activity should therefore be seriously recommended for obesity prevention in the young.  相似文献
