Lake sturgeon spawning on artificial habitat in the St Lawrence River   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In 1996, lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) spawning was documented for the third consecutive year on an artificially placed gravel bed in the St Lawrence River. Two distinct spawning periods were observed in 1996. Spawning initially commenced on 17 June, when water temperature reached 15°C. A second spawning event was documented from 28 June to 1 July (16°C). Sturgeon egg densities were monitored in three transects on egg trays, on the gravel surface, and within interstitial spaces in the gravel. Counts of developing eggs in the gravel bed during both spawning periods were used to estimate a total of 275 000 eggs on the study area (0.075 ha). Average egg density was highest in the transect with the highest water velocities. Lake sturgeon fry were first observed in the gravel on 24 June (15.5°C), and first emergence from the gravel was documented on 28 June. Hatching following the second spawning event commenced on 3 July. Based on assessment of average embryo viability (61.6%) and egg‐to‐emergent fry survival (17.6%) an estimate of about 171 000 sturgeon eggs hatched, producing over 49 000 emergent fry. Current velocity, substrate particle size, depth of substrate, and maintenance of sediment‐free interstitial spaces are important considerations in planning future spawning habitat enhancement projects.  相似文献

The common bream, Abramis brama (L.) in Kortowskie Lake (north-eastern Poland) usually spawn when the water temperature during the late spring rises to 20 °C. The optimal water temperature for embryonic development of this population is 21 °C. However, in some cases, the temperatures of the spawning grounds during bream spawning are much higher, becoming semi-lethal or even lethal for bream embryos. The aim of the study was to investigate the natural and artificial spawning effectiveness of bream during a 4-year study regarding the reproductive effectiveness of the wild bream population in relation to thermal fluctuation (optimal and semi-lethal) of their ecosystem during the natural spawning season. During four following seasons, the bream spawners, as well as the eggs, were collected from the spawning grounds and incubated at optimal (21 °C) and semi-lethal (23 °C) temperatures. The spawning of mature bream was artificially induced and the obtained eggs were also incubated at the same temperatures. The period of observed spawners on the spawning grounds was different in different years: the longest time of bream spawning was in the second year of the study and the shortest was during the third year of the study. In the last year, a decrease in water temperature caused a break in the spawning. Thermal changes in water temperature during the spawning season may have caused a high mortality level of bream embryos and decreased the recruitment of the next species generation.  相似文献

Spawning activity of paddlefish Polyodon spathula in the Missouri River, Montana in 2008–2009 was examined to delineate spawning sites and times in relation to discharge, water temperature and turbidity. One hundred thirty‐six eggs were collected at water temperatures ranging from 12.0 to 20.7°C (mean, 16.3°C; SD, 2.5). Only 12 of 89 (13%) congregations of radio‐tagged adults observed during the spawning period coincided with egg captures. Six larvae were collected at water temperatures ranging from 19.1 to 21.7°C (mean, 20.5°C; SD, 0.86). Peak discharge in 2008 (903 m3 s?1 on 14 June) was approximately 30% greater in magnitude and occurred 11 days later than peak discharge in 2009 (612 m3 s?1 on 3 June). Despite these differences in the hydrograph, no significant differences in egg CPUE were found between years (anova , F = 0.69, P = 0.56). Logistic regression identified no significant river condition variables associated with the presence or absence of eggs (P > 0.14 for all variables). However, in both years maximum egg CPUE was recorded within 3 days of the hydrograph peak and at similar water temperatures (17.5°C in 2008, 16.8°C in 2009). These results suggest an overall association of peaking discharge and seasonally warming water temperatures with egg deposition. Higher catches of eggs and larvae than observed in this study may be necessary to clarify short‐term (day‐to‐day) effects of environmental changes on spawning activity. Continued investigation of the relationship between short‐term changes in river conditions and paddlefish spawning activity is needed to understand the mechanics underlying the reproductive success of this species.  相似文献

Egg predation by conspecific males of damselfishes,Pomacentrus nagasakiensis andChromis notatus notatus, was studied at Bohnotsu (31°15′ N, 131°15′ E) and Tsuyazaki (33°47′ N, 130°29′ E), respectively. InP. nagasakiensis, 7 egg-guarding males were removed from nests, and intrusion and egg predation by conspecific males took place in all of the nests within an average time of 12.2 min. Frequency of attacks on eggs by other reef fishes during the period between the removal of egg-guarding males and intrusion of conspecific males was lower than expected, considering the frequency of aggressive displays of the egg-guarding males. The results of male removal experiments forChromis notatus notatus were almost the same, with intrusion and egg predation by conspecific males occurring in all 12 of the nests from which egg-guarding males had been removed. SixP. nagasakiensis and 15C. notatus notatus which intruded into the nests and preyed on eggs were collected. All were males except for 1C. notatus notatus female. Results suggest that these males which intruded into vacant nests to eat eggs did not have clutches of their own during the spawning bouts when the experiments were done. Results also showed that the intruding males were not inferior to egg-guarding males in standard length, gonadosomatic index, and condition factor. It is clear that males which do not have their own clutches during at least 1 spawning bout and prey on others' eggs when egg-guarding males disappear are common in these 2 gregariously nesting damselfishes. It is discussed that conspecific eggs are potentially a good food source not only for other species of reef fishes but also for conspecific males which do not have their own eggs during the spawning bouts. The origin of males wich prey on eggs of other conspecifics is also considered. Some aspects of egg-guarding and aggressive behavior of males in damselfishes are discussed.  相似文献

The development of spawning in perch, pike and roach in Lake Geneva has been studied by means of artificial spawning substrates, laid at different depths, from 1984 to 1993. In Lake Geneva, perch spawned in May. A rise of surface water temperature up to 14 °C stimulated spawning activity while bad weather (surface temperature at 10 °C) induced a spread of the spawning period over more than one month. The spawning period was delayed in years when the mean width of perch egg-ribbons was the largest; this corresponded to the biggest females. At the beginning of the spawning period (early in May), perch preferentially chose a depth of 4 m to spawn. In contrast, at the end of the spawning period, maximum spawning intensity was observed at a depth of 12 m. This phenomenon was more pronounced when water temperature rose above 14 °C in the top 4 m while it remained below 12 °C at a depth of 12 m. Pike spawned at the end of April and at the beginning of May in Lake Geneva. They preferred spruce branches among the different spawning substrates that we tested in Lake Vouglans. When the water temperature increased at the surface of Lake Geneva, pike preferred to lay their eggs on substrates set at 3 m depth where the temperature was cooler than in the surface layer (10.5 °C vs 14 °C). Roach spawned during the last two weeks of May or during the first two weeks of June in Lake Geneva, depending on water temperature. Spawning had generally been spread over a week, but a sudden decrease of water temperature could slow spawning intensity. Roach were able to lay their eggs on natural or synthetic substrates, located 0.5 m below the surface near the shore as well as, at a distance of several hundred metres from the shore. The survival of eggs was always above 90% for perch and roach and generally above 70% for pike.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, water level and moon phase on the movements of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) were studied during pre-spawning and spawning season from April to June. Trends in catches and temperature were removed with linear regression. Cross-correlation analysis showed that temperature change one and two days earlier had the strongest effect on catches. The annual reproductive cycle of the top shell Turbo cornutus from Jeju Island was investigated in two populations using histology. In the northern population, gametogenesis commenced in January as the surface water temperature reached 14?°C, while in the southern population gametogenesis began a month earlier, as the water temperature remained at 17?°C. Ripe top shells first appeared in June and spawning continued from June to October when water temperatures were between 20 and 24?°C. Histology indicated that the spawning period of the southern population was a month earlier and lasted longer (June–October) than in the northern population (July–September). This study assessed the spawning activity of the threatened Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri by measuring egg densities within the artificial habitat of a large impoundment (Lake Wivenhoe, Australia). Eggs were sampled (August to November 2009) from multiple locations across the impoundment, but occurred at highest densities in water shallower than 40 cm along shorelines with a dense cover of submerged terrestrial vegetation. The numbers of eggs declined over the study period and all samples were dominated by early developmental stages and high proportions of unviable eggs. The quality of the littoral spawning habitats declined over the study as flooded terrestrial grasses decomposed and filamentous algae coverage increased. Water temperatures at the spawning site exhibited extreme variations, ranging over 20·4° C in water shallower than 5 cm. Dissolved oxygen concentrations regularly declined to <1 mg l?1 at 40 and 80 cm water depth. Spawning habitats utilised by N. forsteri within impoundments expose embryos to increased risk of desiccation or excessive submergence through water‐level variations, and extremes in temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration that present numerous challenges for successful spawning and recruitment of N. forsteri in large impoundment environments.  相似文献

The wandering glider dragonfly, Pantala flavescens (Fabricius), arrives in Japan from tropical regions every spring. The offspring colonize areas throughout Japan, with rapid increases in populations in the autumn, but all individuals die in the winter, suggesting low tolerance to low temperatures. However, few quantitative data on egg development and water temperature have been reported for this species. Females at the reproductive stage were collected from fields throughout the flying season and their eggs released using an artificial oviposition technique. Almost all of the eggs were fertilized. Egg size was stable throughout the seasons. Most eggs hatched within a period of 5 days at high water temperatures (35 and 30 °C), which were recorded in the shallow ponds and rice paddy fields from summer to early autumn. However, the egg-stage duration increased with declining water temperature. All eggs in water at 15 °C had failed to hatch by 90 days. The calculated critical temperature of water was determined to be approximately 14.3 °C; the total effective temperature for the egg stage was about 80 degree-days. Thus, low water temperatures in winter may prevent P. flavescens overwintering in Japan.  相似文献

The currrent California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) recovery plan entails increasing the reproductive rate via replacement-clutch manipulation of eggs. During the period from 1983 to 1985, 15 eggs were removed from wild nesting pairs for artificial incubation. The eggs were incubated at a dry bulb temperature of 36.4°C in modified forced-air Lyon Electric incubators. The incubation humidity was adjusted for individual eggs based on weight loss data (water = weight), 25.6–30.0°C wet bulb (41.0–63.0% Relative Humidity (RH)). The chicks were hatched initially under forced-air conditions of 36.1°C dry bulb, 31.1–01.7°C wet bulb (70.0–73.0% RH). In 1984, hatching parameters were changed to still-air conditions, 36.1°C dry bulb (top of the egg), 35.0°C dry bulb (bottom of the egg), 31.1–31.7°C wet bulb (70.0-73.0% RH). Tactile and auditory stimulation was utilized during the pip-to-hatch interval. From among 15 eggs collected, 13 hatched, and 12 condor chicks were raised successfully (hatchability: 86.7%; survivability: 92.3%).  相似文献

Silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus, were collected by fishing with drift gillnets on one spawning ground in Kuwait waters during 1998–2000. Fish size frequency, sex ratio, maturation cycle, spawning frequency, fecundity and egg weight were assessed. The length–weight relationship differed between sexes whereby females were significantly bigger than males. Spawning started in mid‐May and continued until early October. During this time the water temperature ranged from 26.0 to 32.8°C, salinity was ? 39.0‰ and water depth ranged between 5 and 12 m. Large females spawned earlier than young spawners and the overall percentage of males during the spawning period was 70.3%. Spawning occurred after 13.00 h, with peak spawning between 15.00 and 18.00 hours during outgoing tide. Mean daily spawning frequency amounted to 63.2%. Spawning activity was found to be associated with the lunar cycle and spawnings were concentrated during the first and third quarters of the moon period, indicating a semilunar reproduction cycle. It was concluded that a female would spawn at least six times during the season. No change was observed in relative fecundity during the peak spawning season (June–August). Average relative batch fecundity was 176.3 eggs g?1 somatic weight (SW), corresponding to a relative total fecundity of 1058 eggs g?1 SW, which is 1.5 times higher than estimates obtained from counting the standing stock of oocytes. Bigger fish produced heavier eggs and the egg weight decreased as the spawning season progressed. Based on gonadal cycles, oocyte size frequency distribution and total fecundity, we concluded that silver pomfret is a multiple batch spawner with indeterminate fecundity.  相似文献

Summary

The development and improvement of artificial incubation techniques for freshwater crayfish eggs and their incorporation into the working schedule of breeding centres is of great interest for commercial production. Factors such as the water circulation system, flow rate, thermal treatment, etc., could strongly influence the success of the process. The present study attempts to test the possible influence of one of these variables, the thermal regime, on both the duration of embryonic development and the efficiency rates obtained in the artificial incubation of white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) eggs. Four different thermal treatments were tested (three of them included a period at low temperature: 4°-5°C). Survival rates to juvenile stage 2 were similar in the four cases, ranging between 66.7 and 72.7%. We conclude that water cooling (an expensive management procedure) is not necessary in astacid breeding centres provided that egg development takes place at moderately low temperatures (8°-10°C) with a subsequent increase of up to 15°C from the eyed stage. However, the inclusion of periods at low temperature (4°-5°C) allows the staggered production of juvenile batches throughout a 3-week period without adverse effects on efficiency rates. This could be useful to breeding centres in meeting seasonal market requirements. In our study, egg and juvenile losses (mortality rate: 15–20%) were concentrated during the last phases of embryogenesis, particularly from the eyed stage to juvenile stage 2, during which they amounted to more than 90% of the overall mortality which took place during the artificial incubation process.  相似文献

The occurrence of Marteilioides chungmuensis, a protozoan paramyxean parasite in the reproductive system of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, was observed at Gosung Bay, Korea. Seasonal variation in gonad development was investigated in a suspended cultured oyster population. Gametogenesis began in February and first-spawning was observed between mid and late June when surface water temperature reached 22 to 25 degrees C. Spawning activity extended from mid June to late September, with 2 marked spawning peaks in June and August. Histological examination indicated that gonad development paralleled seasonal fluctuations in water temperature. Spawning in late June was partly associated with a sudden drop in salinity due to large freshwater inputs to the Bay with the summer monsoon. M. chungmuensis occurred in developing and fully mature eggs of spawning oysters in late June to January, but were not observed from February to May. Monthly mean infection intensity was high in late June when most oysters had their first spawning period. The infection level was also relatively high in late August and November, when oysters were spawning or had completed spawning. Several oysters collected in November (11.4%) and December (16.3%) carried a large quantity of ripe but M. chungmuensis-infected eggs, suggesting that infection also causes spawning failure by delaying spawning and destroying ripe oocytes.  相似文献

The adverse effects of high temperatures on the early life stages of anadromous whitefish Coregonus lavaretus were experimentally examined by assessing fertilization success, the percentage of developmental abnormalities, cumulative mortality and the rate of embryogenesis across a range of temperatures. Temperatures ≥ 7° C increased the proportion of unfertilized and abnormally dividing eggs, deformed embryos and consequent mortality. The higher the temperature, the more severe were the effects. When eggs were fertilized and constantly incubated at various temperatures, the effective level for 50% of the eggs and embryos (EL50) of temperature was 7·6° C at the developmental stage when eye pigmentation was visible. Fewer developmental abnormalities and a lower cumulative mortality rate were observed when embryos were exposed to high temperatures from the later, gastrula stage, than from fertilization or the four‐cell stage. Irrespective of retarded development in terms of day‐degrees (i.e. the sum of daily mean temperatures), a high incubation temperature reduced the development time of C. lavaretus, leading to earlier hatching, and hatched fry were shorter than at the reference temperature of 4–5° C. Global warming will particularly pose risks for stenothermic species such as C. lavaretus, with early life stages being especially susceptible. Thus, relatively small increases and fluctuations in river water temperatures during the spawning season of this anadromous species may have substantial negative impacts on its recruitment and population persistence.  相似文献

Ladigesocypris ghigii (Gianferrari, 1927), commonly called gizani, is an endangered freshwater fish endemic to the Greek island of Rhodes. The spawning behaviour of gizani was studied in aquaria, to develop an artificial breeding technique for this endangered species. Spawning in captivity was recorded over 41 spawning days between 15 February and 14 July 2001, under constant temperature (18 or 21°C) and photoperiod 14L/10D. The number of spawning acts in a day was 82 ± 28. No aggressiveness and no territoriality were developed. The mating system of the fish was polygamous, with females spawning more than once. In captivity, eggs are laid either on aquatic plants or on gravel, while in nature fish spawn mainly on algae and plants. The latter suggests that, as far as breeding substrate is concerned, gizani is an opportunistic species using different substrates when necessary.  相似文献

The oyster Crassostrea gigas was introduced in Spain for aquaculture purposes; however, until now, it is not known whether populations are established in the wild, being necessary to define whether this species is spawning and which environmental variables trigger this process. The influence of environmental parameters on the reproduction of C. gigas was evaluated from January 2008 to October 2009 with oysters grown on a raft in the Ría de Arousa (Galicia, NW Spain). Temperature and chlorophyll a are directly correlated to sexual maturation. Oysters can mature at temperatures below 14°C. The temperature necessary for spawning differs between the sexes, requiring a temperature above 15°C for males and 18°C for females. Females had a single massive spawn between June and September, while males had partial spawning from May to December with two peaks, one in May–September and another in October–December, with the second peak more pronounced. The first spawning peak is related to high temperatures and concentrations of chlorophyll a, and the second spawning peak is mainly related to the food availability in the water. The spawning asynchrony may be impeding establishment of wild C. gigas populations in Spain.  相似文献

Female spawning-site preference within a nest and its effect on the female mate choice in a paternal brooding blenny Rhabdoblennius ellipes , were examined in rocky intertidal pools using artificial nests. The number of eggs deposited at the nest entrance site was lower than the number deposited at the center and at deep sites. Moreover, the within-nest difference in the egg developmental stage indicated that eggs at the nest entrance site were deposited after those at the center and deep sites. These results indicated that females prefer to spawn eggs in the center and deep sites rather than at the entrance site. Owing to the higher egg mortality rate at the entrance site, females may avoid spawning at such sites. An analysis of the nests in the study area suggested that the within-nest site preference affects female mate choice that is females avoided nests where only the entrance site was available for spawning and instead spawned in nests where the center and deep sites were available.  相似文献

Polyclonal antibody developed from egg proteins of the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, was used in quantification of the eggs. Quantity of the egg protein was measured using ELISA and a weight-normalized gonadosomatic index (GSI) was then established. Histology indicated that the oysters collected from Goseong Bay, Korea, in 2000 initiated gametogenesis as early as late February and spawned mostly in late June to early July when water temperature reached 23–25 °C. A second spawning peak was also observed in late August and the spawning activity continued to late October. Oyster egg proteins could be detected by ELISA in all months except March and November; a few oysters collected during December and January contained a measurable amount of eggs. The highest monthly mean GSI, 0.423, was observed in mid-June when the oysters were ready to spawn. The maximum GSI recorded in this study was 0.667. A positive correlation was found between oyster size and fecundity; the number of eggs increased as oyster biomass increased (r2=0.7497). Our data suggest that oysters in Goseong Bay produce 3–196 million eggs during the spawning season. The immunological method developed in this study was sensitive enough to measure a small quantity of eggs and considered to be method of choice for studying bivalve reproduction.  相似文献

Populations of anadromous European smelt Osmerus eperlanus (L.) are declining across its geographical range in northern Europe, but no practical culture techniques exist to develop stock enhancement programmes for this species. In this study, a culture protocol is described to rear fish from fertilised eggs to mature adults in 2 years involving the use of ‘green water’, live feed and artificial diets. The sequence of embryonic development for eggs incubated at 10°C/0 ppt was described and photographed. To determine the optimum conditions for larval culture, fertilised eggs were reared at a range of salinities (0–20 ppt) and temperatures (5–18°C) until first feeding. Best hatching success (ca. 97%), size at hatch (ca. 0.8 mm) and survival to first feeding (ca. 96%) of larvae were achieved under combined conditions of low salinity (0–0 ppt) and temperature (5–10°C). No larvae survived a salinity of 20 ppt. The time taken from fertilisation to hatch (FtH) and hatching duration (HD) were temperature-dependent ranging from 42 days FtH and 10 days HD at 5ºC, to 10 days FtH and 2 days HD at 18°C irrespective of salinity. The results indicate that conservation programmes could utilise existing salmonid hatchery facilities (i.e. freshwater, ≤10°C water temperature) for stock enhancement. Since on-growing of smelt involves the logistical and technical problems of live feed production, it is recommended that smelt enhancement programme utilise freshwater hatchery facilities to rear fish until hatching, and then stock out onto known spawning grounds in rivers allowing hatched larvae to drift into estuaries to complete the larval and juvenile phases. This approach would minimise the time spent in the hatchery post-hatching, eliminate the need for live food production, prevent the development of predator-naïve fish, and hence would mimic the natural life cycle of the species as closely as possible.  相似文献

When acclimated to a continuous, superabundant food supply and constant temperature, Calanus pacificus Brodsky females produce eggs at a weight-specific rate ranging from 0.13 · day?1 at 8°C to 0.21 · day?1 at 15°C. Maximum weight-specific egg production rates do not change with seasonal changes in female body size. The relationship between egg production rate and food concentration is hyperbolic, with threshold and critical concentrations that are high relative to other species for which data are available. Food concentration and temperature influence spawning frequency (i.e., the time required for oocytes to mature) much more than the number of eggs in a single spawning event (i.e., clutch size).
