Intestinal disaccharidase and alkaline phosphatase activities in experimental rabbit mucoid enteropathy

Mucoid enteropathy was induced experimentally by ligation of the cecum, and the activities of mucosal disaccharidases and alkaline phosphatase were measured at different locations along the small intestine of the sick and control rabbits. In the duodenum of rabbits with mucoid enteropathy, the activity of acid beta-galactosidase II was elevated and hetero beta-galactosidase declined. In the jejunum, the activities of lactase, acid beta-galactosidase I and II, hetero beta-galactosidase, trehalase, sucrase and alkaline phosphatase were significantly lower in animals with mucoid enteropathy. In the ileum, acid beta-galactosidase II, hetero beta-galactosidase, maltase, trehalase, sucrase and alkaline phosphatase showed decreased activity in rabbits with mucoid enteropathy.     

Intestinal lactase and other disaccharidase activities of a suckling crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophagus)

1. The intestinal disaccharidase activities of a suckling crabeater seal were investigated. 2. Lactase, maltase, isomaltase and cellobiase activities were readily detected but trehalase and sucrase activities were absent. 3. The intestinal homogenates were separated into a soluble (S2) fraction and a particulate brush border (P2) fraction. The lactase activities of the two fractions had different properties corresponding to those of an acid and a neutral beta-galactosidase respectively. Approximately two-thirds of the total lactase activity measured at pH 6.0 was due to the acid beta-galactosidase. 4. The isomaltase and cellobiase activities were found almost exclusively in the particulate fractions but about one third of the maltase activity was in the S2 fraction. This soluble maltase activity appeared to be due to an acid maltase.     

The effect of spermine on the disaccharidase activities in suckling rats of different age.

The influence of the age of the rat on the maturation of disaccharidase activities induced by spermine was studied. Three-day- and 9-day-old rats were used in the experiment. Spermine was administered orally or directly into the stomach using thin tubing daily for 3 days, and disaccharidase activities in the jejunum were measured. While spermine caused maturation of not only lactase activity but also maltase and sucrase activities in 9-day-old rats, it only caused maturation of lactase activity in 3-day-old rats. Histological studies showed no significant changes in the jejunum of 3-day-old rats treated with spermine.     

Phospholipids and ATPase activities in the developing chick brain.

During the embryogenesis of chick brain an increase in the specific activities of Na,K- and Mg-ATPase takes place. We determined the quantities of the phospholipids phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine and sphingomyelin in the developing chicken brain by quantitative thin-layer chromatography and found changes in their composition during the first 18 days after incubation. The increase in the Na,K-ATPase activity was proportional to the increase in phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine; the increase in the Mg-ATPase activity was approximately proportional to the increase in phosphatidylethanolamine.     

Developmental changes in collagen glycosyltransferase activities in chick embryos

The developmental pattern of collagen galactosyltransferase and collagen glucosyltransferase activities was determined in chick embryos between the 4th and 21st day of growth. Both enzyme activities increased up to the 16th day and decreased thereafter in whole chick embryos and in most tissues studied. The highest collagen glycosyltransferase activities were found in the leg tendons of the 16-day-old embryos, and the activities found in cartilage were higher than those noted in either skin or skull, indicating that the the activities of the collagen glycosyltransferases may play a part in the regulation of the carbohydrate content of the collagen synthesized by a given tissue. The changes observed in the collagen glycosyltransferase activities agree with previous data on the development of prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase activities and also with findings on collagen turnover in the developing chick embryo.
