Osprey: a network visualization system   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10       下载免费PDF全文
We have developed a software platform called Osprey for visualization and manipulation of complex interaction networks. Osprey builds data-rich graphical representations that are color-coded for gene function and experimental interaction data. Mouse-over functions allow rapid elaboration and organization of network diagrams in a spoke model format. User-defined large-scale datasets can be readily combined with Osprey for comparison of different methods.  相似文献

In the Mediterranean, most areas belonging to the initial distribution range of the Osprey Pandion haliaetus have been lost and local populations have disappeared in recent decades because of persecution. Even though direct management actions have allowed local partial recovery, the Mediterranean population currently only holds a few tens of breeding pairs and is still exposed to local extinction risks. One of the last Mediterranean Osprey breeding areas lies along the North African coast between Morocco and Algeria. In this paper, we report new information on the Osprey population within the Al Hoceima National Park, Morocco. The status of the population for 2012 and 2013 is reported and compared with data collected during the period 1983–1990. A reduction in number of nests and breeding pairs was observed and a 35.7% decrease in the population size recorded. In addition, we discuss the main identified threats to Osprey habitats (e.g. dynamite and poison fishing) that affect the Osprey breeding population in this area. In this context, we stress the necessity for urgent measures to be adopted at the local scale for the protection of this vulnerable population in the light of a sound conservation strategy also at the scale of the Mediterranean.  相似文献

Boshoff, A. F. &; Palmer, N. G. 1983. Aspects of the biology and ecology of the Osprey in the Cape Province, South Africa. Ostrich 54:189-204.

Information gathered opportunistically on the distribution, habitat, density, seasonality, timing of migration, food spectrum, feeding and hunting behaviour and periodicity, flight mode, influence of weather on hunting activity, interspecific and intraspecific interaction, general behaviour and conservation status of the Osprey Pandion haliaetus in the Cape Province, South Africa, is presented. The species is confined mainly to the coastal region and was recorded most frequently from the larger estuaries. Although it is basically a non-breeding migrant to the area, with peaks of occurrence during the austral summer, birds were recorded throughout the austral winter. A maximum density of 0,0028 Osprey/ha of surface water was determined; there is some evidence for an increase in the number of birds in the main study area from 1980 to 1982. The birds are persistent hunters and forage mainly in the littoral zone at water depths of up to 1,5 m, with a hunting activity peak at mid morning and at late afternoon. The food spectrum comprised 84–91% mullet (Mugilidae) of 20–700 g and 9–14% Mozambique Tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. Flapping flight was preferred for hunting purposes and the implications of this are discussed. The study area is considered to provide optimal foraging conditions of windspeed and cloud cover for Ospreys. There was little aggressive interaction between Ospreys and resident Fish Eagles Haliaeetus vocifer and competition between these two species was not a major factor. Kelp Gulls Larus dominicanus harassed Ospreys with grey. The conservation status of Ospreys in the Cape Province is considered to be satisfactory at present.  相似文献

Although marine protected areas (MPAs) are a common conservation strategy, these areas are often designed with little prior knowledge of the spatial behaviour of the species they are designed to protect. Currently, the Coral Sea area and its seamounts (north-east Australia) are under review to determine if MPAs are warranted. The protection of sharks at these seamounts should be an integral component of conservation plans. Therefore, knowledge on the spatial ecology of sharks at the Coral Sea seamounts is essential for the appropriate implementation of management and conservation plans. Acoustic telemetry was used to determine residency, site fidelity and spatial use of three shark species at Osprey Reef: whitetip reef sharks Triaenodon obesus, grey reef sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and silvertip sharks Carcharhinus albimarginatus. Most individuals showed year round residency at Osprey Reef, although five of the 49 individuals tagged moved to the neighbouring Shark Reef (~14 km away) and one grey reef shark completed a round trip of ~250 km to the Great Barrier Reef. Additionally, individuals of white tip and grey reef sharks showed strong site fidelity to the areas they were tagged, and there was low spatial overlap between groups of sharks tagged at different locations. Spatial use at Osprey Reef by adult sharks is generally restricted to the north-west corner. The high residency and limited spatial use of Osprey Reef suggests that reef sharks would be highly vulnerable to targeted fishing pressure and that MPAs incorporating no-take of sharks would be effective in protecting reef shark populations at Osprey and Shark Reef.  相似文献

We have developed a software package called Osprey for the calculation of optimal oligonucleotides for DNA sequencing and the creation of microarrays based on either PCR-products or directly spotted oligomers. It incorporates a novel use of position-specific scoring matrices, for the sensitive and specific identification of secondary binding sites anywhere in the target sequence. Using accelerated hardware is faster and more efficient than the traditional pairwise alignments used in most oligo-design software. Osprey consists of a module for target site selection based on user input, novel utilities for dealing with problematic sequences such as repeats, and a common code base for the identification of optimal oligonucleotides from the target list. Overall, these improvements provide a program that, without major increases in run time, reflects current DNA thermodynamics models, improves specificity and reduces the user's data preprocessing and parameterization requirements. Using a TimeLogic™ hardware accelerator, we report up to 50-fold reduction in search time versus a linear search strategy. Target sites may be derived from computer analysis of DNA sequence assemblies in the case of sequencing efforts, or genome or EST analysis in the case of microarray development in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.  相似文献

The processes of competition and predation determine the degree to which species can coexist; the importance of competition in particular has been emphasized at high trophic levels. Competition exclusion will occur when habitat overlap between sympatric species is high. In this study, we investigated nesting habitat overlap between internationally protected diurnal tree-nesting avian predators of central Europe, namely, White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), and Osprey (Pandion haliaetus). We found significantly different nesting habitats among the study species and suggest that this could be a consequence of the resource-based segregation, but not a consequence of asymmetrical interspecific competition. The results also show that habitat of the recovering populations of White-tailed Eagle overlapped with the habitat used by the Lesser Spotted Eagle, Black Stork, and Osprey to varying extents with a niche overlap values being below the competition exclusion threshold. Nevertheless, we suggest that competition by White-tailed Eagle at a population level may limit Osprey, though not Lesser Spotted Eagle or Black Stork.  相似文献

Capsule Sex-biased dispersal and an age-dependent effect in survival rate accounted for the pattern of first settlement and reproduction in a newly reintroduced Osprey population.

Aims We estimate the survival of translocated individuals, describe juvenile movements and evaluate the success of first breeding events to document the re-establishment of an Osprey breeding population.

Methods Between 2006 and 2010, 32 fledgling Ospreys were reintroduced via hacking techniques in Maremma Regional Park, Italy. We evaluated the effects of age on survival through multistate capture-mark-recapture analyses. Movements were investigated by radiotracking and using records of resightings.

Results Survival was high for juveniles after the release (0.87), markedly decreased during the first winter (0.26), and improved again in subsequent years (annual apparent survival of 0.69 for immatures and 0.93 for adults). Mean distance covered in initial dispersal was greater for females (246.2?km) than for males (38.7?km).

Conclusion Our results provided information on dispersal and survival rate of reintroduced Ospreys in a Mediterranean area. Despite low apparent survival in the first year, the high survival rates found in immatures and adults suggested favourable conditions for this new population. The study of demographic parameters is important for calibrating management actions aimed at the establishment of a self-sustaining Osprey population.  相似文献

We studied nesting habitat selection of the endangered non‐migratory Osprey Pandion haliaetus population of the Canary Islands and evaluated the effect of human expansion in recent decades. Compared with randomly selected potential nest‐sites, Osprey nests were more frequently found on taller, southwest‐facing cliffs, characterized by lower human pressure and closer to Yellow‐legged Gull Larus michahellis colonies and Barbary Falcon Falco pelegrinoides breeding sites. Furthermore, changes in some breeding habitat features have been detected in recent decades. According to our predictive models, large areas of suitable habitat are available but unoccupied in the Canaries, and human activities are probably limiting the settlement and dispersion of new pairs.  相似文献

We analysed migration strategies of the Osprey Pandion haliaetus on the poorly studied Eastern European–East African flyway. Four adult birds were equipped with GPS-based satellite-transmitters or data-loggers in their breeding sites in Estonia (north-eastern Europe) and tracked to their wintering grounds in Africa and back, during up to six migration cycles. Departure times, migration routes, as well as wintering and stopover sites varied remarkably between individuals but not much between years. Stopovers (2–30 days) were made mostly in Europe and less in the Middle East (Turkey) and north-eastern Africa (Egypt). The Ospreys did not avoid flying long distances over the sea, and the sea was crossed four times during the night. The current study adds to current knowledge on Osprey migration and should help to concentrate actions on protecting important flyways and stopover locations.  相似文献

The effects of large-scale climatic phenomena on the timing of breeding in the Osprey Pandion haliaetus were studied during 1981–2006 in a small local population of about 20 pairs near the southern coast of Finland. The timing of breeding was estimated on the basis of the wing length of the largest young within the brood. The wing lengths were plotted against the date of the measurement to get a linear regression model characterizing the average developmental stage of broods in relation to date. This model was used when converting the measurements to correspond to the median date of all the measurements. Large-scale climatic phenomena were characterized by the winter and monthly indices of the North Atlantic oscillation (NAO). A significant positive relationship between the winter NAO index and timing of breeding in the Osprey, as indicated by the wing length of the largest young in the brood, was found. The relationship was even stronger when only the monthly value of January was considered. These relationships seemed to be linked with consequent earlier ice melting after mild winters. The results indicate prominent effects of large-scale climatic phenomena and that they can be monitored with relatively modest effort.  相似文献

A broad range of migration strategies exist in avian species, and different strategies can occur in different populations of the same species. For the breeding Osprey Pandion haliaetus populations of the Mediterranean, sporadic observations of ringed birds collected in the past suggested variations in migratory and wintering behaviour. We used GPS tracking data from 41 individuals from Corsica, the Balearic Islands and continental Italy to perform the first detailed analysis of the migratory and wintering strategies of these Osprey populations. Ospreys showed heterogeneous migratory behaviour, with 73% of the individuals migrating and the remaining 27% staying all year round at breeding sites. For migratory individuals, an extremely short duration of migration (5.2 ± 2.6 days) was recorded. Mediterranean Ospreys were able to perform long non‐stop flights over the open sea, sometimes overnight. They also performed pre‐ and post‐migratory trips to secondary sites, before or after crossing the sea during both autumn and spring migration. Ospreys spent the winter at temperate latitudes and showed high plasticity in habitat selection, using marine bays, coastal lagoons/marshland and inland freshwater sites along the coasts of different countries of the Mediterranean basin. Movements and home‐range areas were restricted during the wintering season. The short duration of trips and high levels of variability in migratory routes and wintering grounds revealed high behavioural plasticity among individuals, probably promoted by the relatively low seasonal variability in ecological conditions throughout the year in the Mediterranean region, and weak competition for non‐breeding sites. We stress the importance of considering the diversity in migration strategies and the particular ecology of these vulnerable populations, especially in relation to proactive management measures for the species at the scale of the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

We studied the nest site selection and distribution pattern at landscape level of the German Osprey population, and demonstrated how to test the predictions of the ideal free distribution theory and its derivatives on such an expanding population. Information about the location and breeding success of each Osprey nest site between 1995 and 2005 was collected through a long-term monitoring programme. Data of land cover types were acquired from the administrations of each federal state and the CORINE Land Cover database. The results showed that Ospreys preferred landscapes with more water bodies and forests. Such sites were also occupied earlier and had higher local population density. However, in the study period of 11 years, there was a gradual shift from forest-dominated landscapes to agricultural land-dominated landscapes. The breeding success increased over time, with no difference in the breeding success between pairs nesting on trees and poles, whereas there was higher breeding success at nest sites surrounded by more agricultural land and less forest. The more efficient foraging in eutrophic lakes in agricultural landscapes was the most likely cause for the higher breeding success. The distribution pattern of the Ospreys did not match the resource allocation, which deviated from the models tested. We suggested that the proximate cues used for nest site selection mismatched site quality due to anthropogenic environmental changes.  相似文献

1. Nesting osprey Pandion haliaetus L. were exposed to controlled low-level CF-18 jet aircraft overflights along the Naskaupi River, Labrador, Canada, during 1995. Jet aircraft flew near five nests at distances ranging from 2·5 nautical miles (nm) to directly overhead at speeds of 400–440 knots.
2. Maximum noise levels (L1) and other noise metrics were influenced by many factors including topography, distance, altitude, wind speed and direction.
3. Based on 240 h of observations from blinds, we recorded osprey nest attendance and egg exposure during 139 individual overflights. Similar observations were completed at two control nests. Overflights as low as 30 m above ground occurred during incubation, nestling and prefledging only when observers were present.
4. Osprey behaviour did not differ significantly (P = 0·126) between pre- and post-overflight periods. Despite L1 values occasionally exceeding 100 decibels, adult osprey did not appear agitated or startled when overflown.
5. Osprey were attentive to and occasionally flushed from nests when float planes, other osprey or raptors entered territories, and when observers were entering or exiting blinds.  相似文献

Allozyme variation at six polymorphic loci was examined in 10 populations of Tridacna maxima from reefs in the Western Coral Sea, to test whether patterns of relatedness previously reported for foraminiferan populations reflected a fundamental structuring of the fauna in the region. Genetic distances (Nei's D) among populations of T. maxima ranged from 0–0.065 and increased with increasing geographical separation. No significant differences in gene frequencies were observed among populations within two groups of reefs identified by cluster analysis: the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and among the offshore reefs excluding Lihou and Osprey. Significant genetic differences among these groups and the outliers Lihou and Osprey were consistent with the greater geographical separation of populations between areas than within areas. There was no evidence of differentiation along a north-south axis as reported for the foraminiferan Marginopora vertebralis, nor did populations from offshore reefs on the Queensland Plateau form a well-defined group that was genetically distinct from the GBR. The patterns observed for M. vertebralis do not appear to reflect a fundamental structuring of biota in the region. The differences in the pattern of genetic variation for M. vertebralis as compared with those for T. maxima may be due to several differences in the biological characteristics of the two species. The time of breeding in particular may influence the extent to which the divergence of the East Australian Current restricts larval dispersal among reefs in the central Queensland Plateau.  相似文献

Nautiloids are the subject of speculation as to their threatened status arising from the impacts of targeted fishing for the ornamental shell market. Life history knowledge is essential to understand the susceptibility of this group to overfishing and to the instigation of management frameworks. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the life of Nautilus in the wild. At Osprey Reef from 1998–2008, trapping for Nautilus was conducted on 354 occasions, with 2460 individuals of one species, Nautilus pompilius, captured and 247 individuals recaptured. Baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVS) were deployed on 15 occasions and six remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives from 100–800 m were conducted to record Nautilus presence and behavior. Maturity, sex and size data were recorded, while measurements of recaptured individuals allowed estimation of growth rates to maturity, and longevity beyond maturity. We found sexual dimorphism in size at maturity (males: 131.9±SD = 2.6 mm; females: 118.9±7.5 mm shell diameter) in a population dominated by mature individuals (58%). Mean growth rates of 15 immature recaptured animals were 0.061±0.023 mm day−1 resulting in an estimate of around 15.5 years to maturation. Recaptures of mature animals after five years provide evidence of a lifespan exceeding 20 years. Juvenile Nautilus pompilius feeding behavior was recorded for the first time within the same depth range (200–610 m) as adults. Our results provide strong evidence of a K-selected life history for Nautilus from a detailed study of a ‘closed’ wild population. In conjunction with population size and density estimates established for the Osprey Reef Nautilus, this work allows calculations for sustainable catch and provides mechanisms to extrapolate these findings to other extant nautiloid populations (Nautilus and Allonautilus spp.) throughout the Indo-Pacific.  相似文献

From what I personally observed on this trip and from information gathered en route and elsewhere, it would seem that-in spring at any rate-the migration along the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez is not very extensive, particularly with regard to the smaller birds. White Storks and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, however, follow this line in vast numbers on their journey north, though, as regards the first-named species, the vast majority had passed through earlier than the date of my visit to that district.
As will be noted from the list of species appended to this paper, very little collecting was done with the gun. The principal object of the trip was to obtain live specimens of the Osprey and other of the larger birds breeding in the locality for the Giza Zoological Gardens. In respect of the Osprey only was I successful, and returned with three young which were still flourishing in the Zoo collection when I left Egypt in July 1927. I was disappointed in not finding more species engaged in nesting operations, and it would appear that such birds as Sula leuco- gaster , Phaëton indicus , Casmerodius albus melanorhynchus , Platalea leucorodia , Larus leucophthalmus , and Sterna bergii welox , which undoubtedly breed in the latitude I visited, do so considerably later in the year than the month of April. Further south, on the Farsan Group of Islands Lat. N. 17°, the Brown Booby was breeding in October. Eggs were found at the end of that month and young birds early in November 1926.  相似文献

The low fecundity, late maturity, long gestation and long life span of Nautilus suggest that this species is vulnerable to over-exploitation. Demand from the ornamental shell trade has contributed to their rapid decline in localized populations. More data from wild populations are needed to design management plans which ensure Nautilus persistence. We used a variety of techniques including capture-mark-recapture, baited remote underwater video systems, ultrasonic telemetry and remotely operated vehicles to estimate population size, growth rates, distribution and demographic characteristics of an unexploited Nautilus pompilius population at Osprey Reef (Coral Sea, Australia). We estimated a small and dispersed population of between 844 and 4467 individuals (14.6-77.4 km(-2)) dominated by males (83:17 male:female) and comprised of few juveniles (<10%).These results provide the first Nautilid population and density estimates which are essential elements for long-term management of populations via sustainable catch models. Results from baited remote underwater video systems provide confidence for their more widespread use to assess efficiently the size and density of exploited and unexploited Nautilus populations worldwide.  相似文献

The ability to rotate the fourth toe to accompany the first toe in opposition of the second and third toes is well known for the Osprey Pandion haliaetus, as an adaptation to have a stronger grip in catching and carry fish. The presence of a similar ability in the Grey-headed Fish Eagle Haliaeetus ichthyaetus and Lesser Fish Eagle Haliaeetus humilis, not shared with other piscivorous eagles, has largely been overlooked. Based on the growing number of photographs of these birds on the internet, the still scarce literature on their ecology and phylogeny, and personal field observation, I draw attention to this and other traits of their morphology, speculating on their origin and adaptive value.  相似文献
