Micro-evolutionary change and population dynamics of a brood parasite and its primary host: the intermittent arms race hypothesis

A long-term study of the interactions between a brood parasite, the great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius, and its primary host the magpie Pica pica, demonstrated local changes in the distribution of both magpies and cuckoos and a rapid increase of rejection of both mimetic
and non-mimetic model eggs by the host. In rich areas, magpies improved three of their defensive mechanisms: nest density
and breeding synchrony increased dramatically and rejection rate of cuckoo eggs increased more slowly. A stepwise multiple
regression analysis showed that parasitism rate decreased as host density increased and cuckoo density decreased. A logistic
regression analysis indicated that the probability of changes in magpie nest density in the study plots was significantly
affected by the density of magpie nests during the previous year (positively) and the rejection rate of mimetic model eggs
(negatively). These results are consistent with a hypothesis (the intermittent arms race hypothesis) of spatially structured
cyclic changes in parasitism. During periods of parasitism, host defences continuously improve, and as a consequence, the
fitness gains for parasites decrease. When host defences against parasites reach a high level, dispersing parasites have a
selective advantage if they are able to emigrate to areas of low resistance. Once parasites have left an area hosts will lose
their defensive adaptations due to their cost in the absence of parasitism. The scene is then set for re-colonization by great
spotted cuckoos.

Temporal patterns of host availability, brown-headed cowbird brood parasitism, and parasite egg mass
Bill M. Strausberger 《Oecologia》1998,116(1-2):267-274
I studied relationships between temporal patterns of host availability, brood parasitism, and egg mass for the parasitic
brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater). At a study site consisting largely of edge habitat in north-eastern Illinois, I found 834 bird nests from 27 species. A
total of 407 cowbird eggs and nestlings were found in these nests over three laying seasons. Nearly all (n= 379; 93%) were found in the nests of seven host species. For these species and all taken together, weekly nest availability
generally decreased whereas parasitism frequency generally increased throughout the cowbird laying season, but the proportions
of nests parasitized and the mean number of cowbird eggs in them did not. Additionally, no correlation was found between the
proportions of nests parasitized and nest availability. Cowbird egg mass generally increased throughout the laying season,
indicating that foraging conditions improved and that, early in the laying season, egg mass and quality may be less important
than quantity. Consistently high weekly levels of parasitism indicate that cowbird reproduction was less limited by resources
needed for egg production and more by the availability of suitable host nests. Fluctuating weekly host availabilities suggest
that previously established, constant rates of cowbird egg laying would produce an excess of eggs during periods of low host
availability. Further, the low frequency of parasitism (1%) of nests in stages too advanced for successful parasitism, and
of abandoned nests, is consistent with the hypothesis that cowbirds' consistently high rate of egg production helps assure
an egg is available when an appropriate nest is found. Frequently, nests were parasitized multiple times, raising the possibility
that cowbirds were interfering with their own reproduction. A diverse host community increases the possibility that a decline
of any one host species is unlikely to affect cowbird reproduction significantly.

Brood parasites dramatically reduce the reproductive successof their
hosts, which therefore have developed defenses againstbrood parasites. The
first line of defense is protecting thenest against adult parasites. When the
parasite has successfullyparasitized a host nest, some hosts are able to
recognize andreject the eggs of the brood parasite, which constitutes the
secondline of defense. Both defense tactics are costly and would be
counteractedby brood parasites. While a failure in nest defense implies
successfulparasitism and therefore great reduction of reproductive successof
hosts, a host that recognizes parasitic eggs has the opportunityto reduce the
effect of parasitism by removing the parasiticegg. We hypothesized that, when
nest defense is counteractedby the brood parasite, hosts that recognize
cuckoo eggs shoulddefend their nests at a lower level than nonrecognizers
becausethe former also recognize adult cuckoos. Magpie (Pica pica)
hoststhat rejected model eggs of the brood parasitic great spottedcuckoo
(Clamator glandarius) showed lower levels of nest defensewhen
exposed to a great spotted cuckoo than when exposed toa nest predator (a
carrion crow Corvus corone). Moreover, magpiesrejecting cuckoo eggs
showed lower levels of nest defense againstgreat spotted cuckoos than
nonrecognizer magpies, whereas differencesin levels of defense disappeared
when exposed to a carrion crow. These results suggest that hosts specialize in
antiparasitedefense and that different kinds of defense are antagonistically
expressed. We suggest that nest-defense mechanisms are ancestral, whereasegg
recognition and rejection is a subsequent stage in the coevolutionaryprocess.
However, host recognition ability will not be expressedwhen brood parasites
break this second line of defense.

Change in host rejection behavior mediated by the predatory behavior of its brood parasite

Passerine hosts of parasitic cuckoos usually vary in their abilityto
discriminate and reject cuckoo eggs. Costs of discriminationand rejection
errors have been invoked to explain the maintenanceof this within-population
variability. Recently, enforcementof acceptance by parasites has been
identified as a rejectioncost in the magpie (Pica pica) and its
brood parasite, the greatspotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius).
Previous experimentalwork has shown that rejecter magpies suffer from
increased nestpredation by the great spotted cuckoo. Cuckoo predatory
behavioris supposed to confer a selective advantage to the parasitebecause
magpies experiencing a reproductive failure may providea second opportunity
for the cuckoo to parasitize a replacementclutch. This hypothesis implicitly
assumes that magpies modulatetheir propensity to reject parasite eggs as a
function of previousexperience. We tested this hypothesis in a magpie
populationbreeding in study plots varying in parasitism rate. Magpie pairs
thatwere experimentally parasitized and had their nests depredated, after
their rejection behavior had been assessed, changed theirbehavior from
rejection to acceptance. The change in host behaviorwas prominent in study
plots with high levels of parasitism, but not in plots with rare or no cuckoo
parasitism. We discussthree possible explanations for these differences,
concludingthat in study plots with a high density of cuckoos, the probability
fora rejecter magpie nest of being revisited and depredated bya cuckoo is
high, particularly for replacement clutches, and, therefore, the cost for
magpies of rejecting a cuckoo egg ina replacement clutch is increased.
Moreover, in areas with highlevels of host defense (low parasitism rate), the
probabilityof parasitism and predation of rejecter-magpie nests by thecuckoo
is reduced in both first and replacement clutches. Therefore, rejecter magpies
in such areas should not change their rejectionbehavior in replacement
clutches.

We tested great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) discrimination against two common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) female color morphs (gray and rufous) in two areas with different parasitism rates and proportions of the two morphs. Hosts recognized the two cuckoo morphs from a control, the feral pigeon (Columba livia), at Apaj, Hungary (where brood parasitism was heavy), whereas no significant differences among the models were recorded at Lužice, Czech Republic (where the parasitism rate was moderate). At Apaj, the hosts discriminated the rufous morph (which is slightly predominant there) better than the gray morph from the control. Between-site comparison (after controlling for background aggression) revealed that great reed warblers were more aggressive towards the rufous morph at Apaj than at Lužice, whereas their responses to the gray morph did not differ, corresponding with much higher between-site difference in the relative abundance of the rufous morph. Our results suggest that both local parasitism pressure and relative abundance of two female color morphs of a brood parasite may significantly influence host nest defenses.

Avian brood parasites reduce the reproductive output of their hosts and thereby select for defence mechanisms such as ejection of parasitic eggs. Such defence mechanisms simultaneously select for counter-defences in brood parasites, causing a coevolutionary arms race. Although coevolutionary models assume that defences and counter-defences are genetically influenced, this has never been demonstrated for brood parasites. Here, we give strong evidence for genetic differences between ejector and nonejectors, which could allow the study of such host defence at the genetic level, as well as studies of maintenance of genetic variation in defences. Briefly, we found that magpies, that are the main host of the great spotted cuckoo in Europe, have alleles of one microsatellite locus (Ase64) that segregate between accepters and rejecters of experimental parasitic eggs. Furthermore, differences in ejection rate among host populations exploited by the brood parasite covaried significantly with the genetic distance for this locus.

Summary Nest defence is a frequent and widespread parental behaviour which enhances brood survival. We have found that in a Spanish Magpie population which is heavily parasitized by the brood parasitic Great Spotted Cuckoo, Magpies defend (1) unparasitized more frequently than parasitized nests, and (2) at the end of the nestling period more frequently than in other stages of the breeding cycle. Great Spotted Cuckoos are brood parasites, which means that their eggs are incubated and their nestlings are raised by members of a host species. Brood parasites are not thought to take care of their own offspring. However, we have found that Great Spotted Cuckoos sometimes scolded us on our regular visits to parasitized magpie nests (but never on those to unparasitized nests). Frequency of nest defence by cuckoos differed significantly among years, being significantly higher at the beginning of the study. Although sporadic observations of adult brood parasites feeding juveniles have been recorded, nest defence has not previously been suggested for any brood parasite.

Diversity of the gut bacterial community is of prime importance for optimal food digestion and, therefore, for nutritional condition of avian nestlings. Consequently, bacterial community should be considered as a predictor of the future survival and recruitment of young birds. To explore this hypothesis, we studied the cloacal microbiota, by using RISA procedure, in two avian species sharing environmental conditions during growth, the avian brood parasitic great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius , and their main host in Europe, the magpie Pica pica . As estimates of phenotypic condition of nestlings we studied two nutrition-dependent traits, the immune response to an innocuous antigen (phytohemagglutinin), and the residuals of body mass on tarsus and wing length of nestlings. According to the hypothesis, we found significant relationships between microbial diversity and nestling phenotypic traits related to probability of recruitment. Briefly, both magpie and cuckoo nestlings having more similar microbial diversity were also those with similar immune response and body condition index respectively. Our results show a possible association between bacterial communities and variables related to the probability of post-fledging survival and recruitment of birds, as well as possible reasons explaining magpie-cuckoo differences in the nutritionally conditioned variables better associated with their bacterial diversity.

Egg discrimination in hosts of the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus is frequently studied by experimental parasitism, using model cuckoo eggs. We compared egg rejection behaviour of the great
reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus to either model cuckoo eggs made of plastic or painted real host eggs. We simultaneously parasitised host nests by two different
egg types to simulate cuckoo parasitism. A previous study revealed very similar, ca. 70%, rejection rates against both of
these egg types (beige or bluish background colour maculated with dark brown) when they were used for single parasitism. In
the present study we showed 96% average rejection rates against these egg types when they were applied in multiple experimental
parasitism, causing a more predictable output for rejection behaviour. Hard plastic eggs and painted real eggs were rejected
at similar frequencies, and videotaping revealed that model egg rejection caused extra work for great reed warblers. We revealed
a new type of rejection behaviour, when hosts tried to eject hard-shelled model cuckoo eggs: Hosts made little holes in the
middle part of these plastic eggs by pecking them several times before ejection, as if seeking the possibility to pierce and
hold these eggs in their bills. Painted real eggs were rejected by actually puncturing the eggshell and holding them in the
bill during ejection. No instances of grasp ejection were recorded during filming. Most experimental eggs of either type were
ejected within 1 day after the introduction of the eggs, indicating that hosts made their rejection decisions quickly. Our
observations suggest the lack of plasticity in the mode and timing of ejection behaviour towards experimental cuckoo eggs
of different types in great reed warblers.

Egg rejection behaviour towards parasitic eggs was studied in a great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus population in central Hungary, which was heavily (about 65%) parasitised by the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus . Clutches were experimentally parasitised during the egg-laying period with artificial, moderately mimetic cuckoo eggs or with conspecific eggs that were good mimics of the hosts' eggs. Great reed warblers rejected 76.2% of the artificial cuckoo eggs, mainly by ejection, but accepted most of the conspecific eggs (87.5%). Cuckoo eggs in naturally parasitised clutches were rejected at a lower rate (32%). When, in addition to the egg mimicry experiments, a stuffed cuckoo was placed near the nest, accompanied by the recording of a female cuckoo call, hosts' rejection rate of the artificial cuckoo egg increased from 76% to 96%. The sight of the cuckoo, on the other hand, did not influence host's rejection behaviour when a conspecific egg was used in the experiment. A stuffed collared dove Streptopelia decaocto , accompanied by its call, was used as a control, and did not cause any increased rejection. Great reed warblers were more aggressive towards the cuckoo than to the dove dummy. When the cuckoo eggs in naturally parasitised clutches were exchanged with artificial cuckoo eggs, we observed no increase in the rejection rate. We conclude that great reed warblers in our heavily parasitised population are capable of detecting brood parasitism in their clutch by identifying the parasitic egg. The efficiency of this identification depends mainly on the mimicry of the foreign egg. The sight of the cuckoo at the nest may increase rejection rate by stimulus summation, and this conditional effect is mainly affected by the degree of mimicry of the parasitic egg.

Recent studies, which have found evidence for kin-biased egg donation, have sparked interest in re-assessing the parasitic nature of conspecific brood parasitism (CBP). Since host–parasite kinship is essential for mutual benefits to arise from CBP, we explored the role of relatedness in determining the behaviour of conspecific nest parasites and their hosts in nesting female Barrow's goldeneyes ( Bucephala islandica ), a duck in which CBP is common. The results revealed that the amount of parasitism increased with host–parasite relatedness, the effect of which was independent of geographical proximity of host and parasite nests. Proximity per se was also positively associated with the amount of parasitism. Furthermore, while hosts appeared to reduce their clutch size as a response to the presence of parasitic eggs, the magnitude of host clutch reduction also tended to increase with increasing relatedness to the parasite. Hence, our results indicate that both relatedness and spatial proximity are important determinants of CBP, and that host clutch reduction may be an adaptation to nest parasitism, modulated by host–parasite relatedness. Taken together, the results provide a demonstration that relatedness influences host and parasite behaviour in Barrow's goldeneyes, resulting in kin-biased egg donation.

Archegozetes longisetosus is a parthenogenetic oribatid mite and a chelicerate model organism. We examined the localisation of processes between vitellogenesis and embryogenesis as well as the anatomy and histology of involved structures by means of light- and electron microscopy. The proximal oviduct is differentiated into an oviductal bulb, exhibiting a strong secretory epithelium. Here, solidification of the egg shell instantaneously occurs upon passing of the egg from the perivitelline space into the oviductal lumen. This is interpreted as an internalised oviposition with the generation boundary being effectively located at the ovary-oviduct transition, rendering the oviducts into functional brood chambers. The parity mode combines elements of oviparity and ovolarviparity with facultative egg retention.

A parasitic wasp, Aenasius bambawalei, was studied for its biological parameters and parasitism levels in the cotton mealybug (Phenacoccus solenopsis). Biological parameters including parasitism efficiency, time to pupation, time to eclosion and adult sex ratio were studied under lab conditions. Parasitism levels in field collected mealybug were determined using PCR. Results showed an increase in parasitism over the study period, with higher parasitism levels in 2009 compared to the preceding 2 years.

Black scale Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) is a widespread olive pest in California and Europe. Metaphycus lounsburyi (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is often one of its main parasitoids. Augmentative releases of M. lounsburyi have been proposed in those areas in which biological control is ineffective. In this paper, we study the relationship between black scale and M. lounsburyi in the field. According to our data, M. lounsburyi parasitizes mainly ovipositing females of black scale. Parasitism rates of ovipositing females reach high levels. In those scales, M. lounsburyi develops as a gregarious parasitoid, with an average of 13 and a maximum of 40 parasitoids developing per scale. The secondary sex ratio is female biased (proportion of males = 0.13) and appears to be brood size dependent. Metaphycus lounsburyi eggs are encyrtiform; however, its egg load is much higher than other Metaphycus that also parasitize black scale. The implications of these results on the behavioral ecology of M. lounsburyi and its use in biological control of black scale are discussed.
