Salmonellosis has been reported as an important cause of mortality of garden birds in several countries, including Norway and Scotland. We investigated the frequency of the disease in garden birds submitted for postmortem examination by members of the public in England and Wales between 1993 and 2003, inclusive. We found salmonellosis to be the most frequent cause of death due to infectious disease in the garden birds submitted. This disease was confirmed in 7 of the 45 bird species that were examined postmortem, with the greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) and the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) most frequently affected. Salmonella Typhimurium definitive phage type (DT) 40, DT56 variant(v), and DT160 accounted for the majority of isolates. Salmonellosis incidents chiefly occurred in the English Midlands, the English/Welsh border region, and southern England. Variation in the temporal and spatial distribution of the phage types occurred over the study period. While birds were examined throughout the year, there was a marked winter seasonality in salmonellosis. A significant sex bias was observed in affected greenfinches, with males more frequently diagnosed with salmonellosis than females. No sex bias was observed for other affected species. Further research is required to determine if salmonellosis is an important constraint to the populations of affected species and if disease outbreaks are driven by human factors, such as provisioning.  相似文献

Campylobacter, salmonella and chlamydia in free-living birds of Croatia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and avian chlamydiosis are zoonotic diseases in which birds have been suggested to play an important role as reservoirs. We have investigated the prevalence of Campylobacter and Salmonella spp. and Chlamydophila sp. in 107 free-living birds belonging to 25 species from 13 families from Croatia in order to examine the natural infections caused by these agents. Campylobacter jejuni-like organisms were isolated from 2 of 107 free-living bird species examined (1.9%). Salmonella was isolated from 8 fresh fecal specimens from free-living bird species (7.4%). These isolates were identified as S. typhimurium in 4 (3.7%), and S. enteriditis in 4 (3.7%) free-living birds. These samples originated from feral pigeons (Columba livia domesticus; n=14; 28.6%), rook (Corvus frugilegus; n=13; 15.4%), buzzard (Buteo buteo; n=12; 16.7%), black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus; n=8; 12.5%) and tawny owl (Strix aluco; n=8; 12.5%). The presence of Chlamydophila sp. was not detected in the free-living birds examined during this study. Epidemiological aspects and possible significance of the examined birds as a source of infections for domestic animals and humans are discussed.  相似文献

Background

The type III secretion systems (T3SSs) encoded bySalmonellapathogenicity island 1 and 2 (SPI-1 and SPI-2) are important for invasion of epithelial cells during development ofSalmonella-associated enterocolitis and for replication in macrophages during systemic infection, respectively. In vitrostudies have previously revealed hierarchical transport of different SPI-1 factors and ordered synergistic/antagonistic relationships between these proteins duringSalmonellaentry. These results suggest that the level and timing of the expression of these proteins dictate the consequences of bacterial infection and pathogenesis. However, the expression of these proteins has not been extensively studiedin vivo, especially during the later stages of salmonellosis when the infection is established.  相似文献

Enteric illnesses remain the second largest source of communicable diseases worldwide, and wild birds are suspected sources for human infection. This has led to efforts to reduce pathogen spillover through deterrence of wildlife and removal of wildlife habitat, particularly within farming systems, which can compromise conservation efforts and the ecosystem services wild birds provide. Further, Salmonella spp. are a significant cause of avian mortality, leading to additional conservation concerns. Despite numerous studies of enteric bacteria in wild birds and policies to discourage birds from food systems, we lack a comprehensive understanding of wild bird involvement in transmission of enteric bacteria to humans. Here, we propose a framework for understanding spillover of enteric pathogens from wild birds to humans, which includes pathogen acquisition, reservoir competence and bacterial shedding, contact with people and food, and pathogen survival in the environment. We place the literature into this framework to identify important knowledge gaps. Second, we conduct a meta‐analysis of prevalence data for three human enteric pathogens, Campylobacter spp., E. coli, and Salmonella spp., in 431 North American breeding bird species. Our literature review revealed that only 3% of studies addressed the complete system of pathogen transmission. In our meta‐analysis, we found a Campylobacter spp. prevalence of 27% across wild birds, while prevalence estimates of pathogenic E. coli (20%) and Salmonella spp. (6.4%) were lower. There was significant bias in which bird species have been tested, with most studies focusing on a small number of taxa that are common near people (e.g. European starlings Sturnus vulgaris and rock pigeons Columba livia) or commonly in contact with human waste (e.g. gulls). No pathogen prevalence data were available for 65% of North American breeding bird species, including many commonly in contact with humans (e.g. black‐billed magpie Pica hudsonia and great blue heron Ardea herodias), and our metadata suggest that some under‐studied species, taxonomic groups, and guilds may represent equivalent or greater risk to human infection than heavily studied species. We conclude that current data do not provide sufficient information to determine the likelihood of enteric pathogen spillover from wild birds to humans and thus preclude management solutions. The primary focus in the literature on pathogen prevalence likely overestimates the probability of enteric pathogen spillover from wild birds to humans because a pathogen must survive long enough at an infectious dose and be a strain that is able to colonize humans to cause infection. We propose that future research should focus on the large number of under‐studied species commonly in contact with people and food production and demonstrate shedding of bacterial strains pathogenic to humans into the environment where people may contact them. Finally, studies assessing the duration and intensity of bacterial shedding and survival of bacteria in the environment in bird faeces will help provide crucial missing information necessary to calculate spillover probability. Addressing these essential knowledge gaps will support policy to reduce enteric pathogen spillover to humans and enhance bird conservation efforts that are currently undermined by unsupported fears of pathogen spillover from wild birds.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption of European finches, the siskin (Carduelis spinus), the brambling (Fringilla montifringilla), the bullfinch (Pyrhulla pyrhulla), the greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) and the hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes), was recorded continuously while ambient temperature was decreased stepwise from +30 down to-75°C. The oxygen consumption, body temperature (telemetrically), and shivering (integrated pectoral electromyography) of greenfinches were measured simultaneously at ambient temperatures between +30 and-75°C. Maximum heat production, cold limit, lower critical temperature, basal metabolic rate and thermal conductance (of the greenfinch) were determined. The diurnal variation of oxygen consumption of siskins and greenfinches was recorded at thermoneutrality and below the thermoneutral zone in winter- and summer-acclimatized birds. The diurnal variation of body temperature and thermal conductance of greenfinches were also determined. The diurnal variation of heat production was not seasonal or temperature dependent in the siskin and in the greenfinch. Nocturnal reduction of oxygen consumption saved 15–33% energy in the siskin and greenfinch. Body temperature of the greenfinch was lowered by 2.5–3.4°C. The nocturnal reduction of thermal conductance in the greenfinch was 39–48%. The basal metabolic rate was lowest in the largest bird (hawfinch) and highest in the smallest bird (siskin). The values were in the expected range. The heat production capacity of finches in winter was 4.7 times basal metabolic rate in the siskin, 4.2 times in the brambling, 3.5 times in the greenfinch and 2.9 times in the bullfinch and hawfinch. The heat production capacity of the siskin and greenfinch was not significantly lower in summer. The cold limit temperatures (°C) in winter were-61.2 in the siskin,-41.3 in the greenfinch,-37.0 in the bullfinch,-35.7 in the brambling and-28.9 in the hawfinch. The cold limit was 14.3°C higher in summer than in winter in the siskin and 8.7°C in the greenfinch. Thermal insulation of the greenfinch was significantly better in winter than in summer. The shivering of the greenfinch increased linearly when ambient temperature was decreased down to-40°C. Maintenance of shivering was coincident with season. In severe cold integrated pectoral electromyography did not correlate with oxygen consumption as expected. The possible existence of non-shivering thermogenesis in birds is discussed. It is concluded that the acclimatization of European finches is primarily metabolic and only secondly affected by insulation.Abbreviations AAT avian adipose tissue - bm body mass - BMR basal metabolic rate - C t thermal conductance - EMG electromyogram - HP heat production - HP max maximum heat production - MR metabolic rate - NST non-shivering thermogenesis - RMR resting metabolic rate - RQ respiratory quotient - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - T c colonic temperature - T 1c lower critical temperature - TNZ thermoneutral zone - T st shivering threshold temperature - V oxygen consumption  相似文献

Aims

The control of Salmonella in pig production is necessary for public and animal health, and vaccination was evaluated as a strategy to decrease pig prevalence.

Methods and Results

The study examined the efficacy of a live Salmonella Typhimurium vaccine, administered to sows on eight commercial farrow‐to‐finish herds experiencing clinical salmonellosis or Salmonella carriage associated with S. Typhimurium or its monophasic variants. Results of longitudinal Salmonella sampling were compared against eight similarly selected and studied control farms. At the last visit (~14 months after the start of vaccination), when all finishing stock had been born to vaccinated sows, both faecal shedding and environmental prevalence of Salmonella substantially declined on the majority of vaccinated farms in comparison to the controls. A higher proportion of vaccine farms resolved clinical salmonellosis than controls. However, Salmonella counts in positive faeces samples were similar between nonvaccinated and vaccinated herds.

Conclusions

The results suggest that maternal vaccination is a suitable option for a Salmonella Typhimurium reduction strategy in farrow‐to‐finish pig herds.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Salmonella vaccines have the potential to reduce the prevalence of Salmonella in pigs and result in a reduction of human cases attributed to pork.  相似文献

Aims: To investigate the transmission of Salmonella spp. between production animals (pigs and cattle) and wildlife on production animal farms in Denmark. Methods and Results: In the winter and summer of 2001 and 2002, 3622 samples were collected from Salmonella-infected and noninfected herds of pigs and cattle and surrounding wildlife. Salmonella was detected in wildlife on farms carrying Salmonella-positive production animals and only during the periods when Salmonella was detected in the production animals. The presence of Salmonella Typhimurium in wild birds significantly correlated to their migration pattern and food preference. Conclusions: Salmonella was transmitted from infected herds of production animals (cattle and pigs) to wildlife that lived amongst or in close proximity to them. Significance and Impact of the Study: Salmonella in animal food products is associated with the occurrence of Salmonella in primary animal production. Strategies to control the introduction and spread of infection should include wildlife management, as the nearby wildlife may act as reservoirs for Salmonella spp. and/or may be passive carriers of the bacteria.  相似文献

Aims: Recent studies have suggested that Salmonella Typhimurium strains associated with mortality in UK garden birds are significantly different from strains that cause disease in humans and livestock and that wild bird strains may be host adapted. However, without further genomic characterization of these strains, it is not possible to determine whether they are host adapted. The aim of this study was to characterize a representative sample of Salm. Typhimurium strains detected in wild garden birds using multi‐locus sequence typing (MLST) to investigate evolutionary relationships between them. Methods and Results: Multi‐locus sequence typing was performed on nine Salm. Typhimurium strains isolated from wild garden birds. Two sequence types were identified, the most common of which was ST568. Examination of the public Salmonella enterica MLST database revealed that only three other ST568 isolates had been cultured from a human in Scotland. Two further isolates of Salm. Typhimurium were determined to be ST19. Conclusions: Results of MLST analysis suggest that there is a predominant strain of Salm. Typhimurium circulating among garden bird populations in the United Kingdom, which is rarely detected in other species, supporting the hypothesis that this strain is host adapted. Significance and Impact of the Study: Host–pathogen evolution is often assumed to lead to pathogens becoming less virulent to avoid the death of their host; however, infection with ST568 led to high mortality rates among the wild birds examined, which were all found dead at wild bird‐feeding stations. We hypothesize that by attracting unnaturally high densities of birds, wild bird‐feeding stations may facilitate the transmission of ST568 between wild birds, therefore reducing the evolutionary cost of this pathogen killing its host, resulting in a host‐adapted strain with increased virulence.  相似文献

The viability of different species ofSalmonella in seawater was studied under controlled laboratory conditions. The negative influence of water self-purifying factors exerted on the survival of the microorganisms varied depending on the factor considered and also on the specie selected. Biotic and luminous factors were mainly responsible for the inactivation and disappearance ofSalmonella in the water solutions. The addition of 1% of sewage to filtered seawater and freshwater provoked a decrease in the number ofSalmonella populations tested in comparison with the solutions without sewage. On the other hand, an increase of sublethally injuredSalmonella cells with respect to exposure time was not observed. From the results obtained from T90 inactivation experiments, it may be deduced that the main factor implicated in the disappearance ofSalmonella from the water mass is physical dilution.  相似文献

Emerging infectious diseases are increasingly cited as threats to wildlife, livestock and humans alike. They can threaten geographically isolated or critically endangered wildlife populations; however, relatively few studies have clearly demonstrated the extent to which emerging diseases can impact populations of common wildlife species. Here, we report the impact of an emerging protozoal disease on British populations of greenfinch Carduelis chloris and chaffinch Fringilla coelebs, two of the most common birds in Britain. Morphological and molecular analyses showed this to be due to Trichomonas gallinae. Trichomonosis emerged as a novel fatal disease of finches in Britain in 2005 and rapidly became epidemic within greenfinch, and to a lesser extent chaffinch, populations in 2006. By 2007, breeding populations of greenfinches and chaffinches in the geographic region of highest disease incidence had decreased by 35% and 21% respectively, representing mortality in excess of half a million birds. In contrast, declines were less pronounced or absent in these species in regions where the disease was found in intermediate or low incidence. Also, populations of dunnock Prunella modularis, which similarly feeds in gardens, but in which T. gallinae was rarely recorded, did not decline. This is the first trichomonosis epidemic reported in the scientific literature to negatively impact populations of free-ranging non-columbiform species, and such levels of mortality and decline due to an emerging infectious disease are unprecedented in British wild bird populations. This disease emergence event demonstrates the potential for a protozoan parasite to jump avian host taxonomic groups with dramatic effect over a short time period.  相似文献

The occurrence ofSalmonella in endemic and subendemic species of lizard and frog of Gran Canaria,Gallotia stehlini andRana perezi, as well as captive reptiles from other regions of the world was investigated. The occurrence ofSalmonella was statistically higher in endemic and subendemic species than in captive animals (p<0.001). Seventy strains ofSalmonella were isolated.S. berta andS. grancanaria were the most frequently isolated serotypes. The study ofSalmonella in gall-bladder contents showed a high parasitation (85%), being higher inGallotia stehlini (100%) than inRana perezi (60%). None of the isolated salmonellae were resistant to tested antibiotics.  相似文献

Background

Salmonella spp. have been isolated from a wide range of wild animals. Opportunistic wild carnivores such as red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and badgers (Meles meles) may act as environmental indicators or as potential sources of salmonellosis in humans. The present study characterizes Salmonella spp. isolated from the intestinal contents of hunted or dead red foxes (n?=?509) and badgers (n?=?17) in northern Italy.

Findings

Thirty-one strains of Salmonella belonging to 3 Salmonella enterica subspecies were isolated. Fourteen different serovars of S. enterica subsp. enterica were identified, among which were serovars often associated with human illness.

Conclusions

Wild opportunistic predators can influence the probability of infection of both domestic animals and humans through active shedding of the pathogen to the environment. The epidemiological role of wild carnivores in the spread of salmonellosis needs to be further studied.

Aim: This study aimed to assess the applicability of a combined approach of traditional and molecular epidemiology in order to detect salmonellosis outbreaks in the Piedmont region (Italy), characterized by high Salmonella prevalence. Methods and Results: Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used in real‐time and in combination with clinical surveillance to assess the relatedness of salmonellosis human cases; subsequently, PFGE profiles of clinical isolates were compared with those of isolates from food items collected during the same study period to identify putative food sources of Salmonella. The real‐time subtyping approach allowed the identification of an outbreak (21 isolates), which was undetected by epidemiological surveillance. Conclusions: Traditional epidemiological investigation did not allow the formulation of hypotheses on food items possibly associated with the outbreak owing mainly to patients’ difficulties in remembering foods they ate, and the tendency of health‐care professionals to direct patient’s suspicion towards specific food items. Significance and Impact of the Study: This finding highlighted the value of real‐time molecular subtyping in salmonellosis outbreak identification. In order to improve national epidemiological investigations implementing public health agency network and planning, information campaigns for health‐care professionals are required.  相似文献

Aims

To evaluate mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) and threonine effects on performance, small intestine morphology and Salmonella spp. counts in Salmonella Enteritidis‐challenged birds.

Methods and Results

One‐day‐old chicks (1d) were distributed into five treatments: nonchallenged animals fed basal diet (RB‐0), animals fed basal diet and infected with Salmonella Enteritidis (RB‐I), animals fed high level of threonine and infected (HT‐I), birds fed basal diet with MOS and infected (MOS‐I), birds fed high level of threonine and MOS and infected (HT+MOS‐I). Birds were inoculated at 2d with Salmonella Enteritidis, except RB‐0 birds. Chicks fed higher dietary threonine and MOS showed performance similar to RB‐0 and intestinal morphology recovery at 8 dpi. Salmonella counts and the number of Salmonella‐positive animals were lower in HT+MOS‐I compared with other challenged groups.

Conclusion

Mannan oligosaccharides and threonine act synergistically, resulting in improved intestinal environment and recovery after Salmonella inoculation.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Nutritional approaches may be useful to prevent Salmonella infection in the first week and putative carcass contamination at slaughter. This is the first report on the possible synergistic effect of mannan oligosaccharides and threonine, and further studies should be performed including performance, microbiota evaluation, composition of intestinal mucins and immune assessment.  相似文献

In 1965 and 1966 respectively 9628 and 10467Salmonella strains were screened for resistance to tetracycline and chloramphenicol. In 1965 the major half of the strains were also tested for ampicillin resistance and in 1966 all strains passed this test. In 1965 20.9% and in 1966 21.7% were found resistant, mainly to tetracycline. The incidence of resistance to chloramphenicol remained low (less than 1%). By far the majority of the resistant strains belonged toS. typhi murium andS. panama. The rate of resistance in the former organism remained nearly equal to that observed in 1963 – 1964, whereas inS. panama it has diminished.Ampicillin-resistant strains were found in as many as 23 different types ofSalmonella. In 8 types in which ampicillin resistance was found, only animal strains were concerned. These findings may represent cases of primary ampicillin resistance. In the human strains ofSalmonella the incidence of ampicillin resistance increased from 11.6% in 1965 to 15.3% in 1966.  相似文献

Aims: Salmonella spp. are an important cause of food‐borne infections throughout world, and the availability of rapid and simple detection techniques is critical for the food industry. Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium cause the majority of human gastroenteritis infections, and there are a reported 40 000 cases of salmonellosis in the United States each year. Methods and Results: A novel rapid and simple isothermal target and probe amplification (iTPA) assay that rapidly amplifies target DNA (Salmonella invA gene) using a FRET‐based signal probe in an isothermal environment was developed for detection Salmonella spp. in pre‐enriched food samples. The assay was able to specifically detect all of 10 Salmonella spp. strains without detecting 40 non‐Salmonella strains. The detection limit was 4 × 101 CFU per assay. The iTPA assay detected at an initial inoculum level of <10 CFU in the pre‐enriched food samples (egg yolk, chicken breast and peanut butter). Conclusions: This detection system requires only a water bath and a fluorometer and has great potential for use as a hand‐held device or point‐of‐care‐testing diagnostics. The iTPA assay is sensitive and specific and has potential for rapid screening of Salmonella spp. by food industry.  相似文献
