These proceedings represent nearly all the platform and poster presentations given during the International Symposium on Evaluation of Butadiene and Chloroprene Health Risks, held in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, on September 20-22, 2005. The Symposium was attended by 78 participants representing private industry (37), academia (21), government (11), not-for-profit organizations (5), and consulting (4). The program followed the format of previous symposia on butadiene, chloroprene, and isoprene in London UK (2000) and butadiene and isoprene in Blaine, Washington USA (1995). This format enabled the exchange of significant new scientific results and discussion of future research needs. Isoprene was not evaluated during the 2005 Symposium because of lack of new data. For background information, the reader is referred to the proceedings of the London 2000 meeting for a thorough historical perspective and overview of scientific and regulatory issues concerning butadiene, chloroprene, and isoprene [Chem.-Biol. Interact. (2001) 135-136:1-7]. The Symposium consisted of seven sessions: (1) Introduction and Opening Remarks, (2) Butadiene/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)--Process Overview, Exposure and Health Effects/Human Studies; (3) Chloroprene--Process Overview, Exposure and Health Effects/Human Studies; (4) Mode of Action/Key Events; (5) Risk Assessment; (6) Poster Presentations; and (7) Panel Discussion and Future Directions. The Symposium concluded with a discussion by all participants of issues that arose throughout the course of the Symposium. The Proceedings of the Symposium published in this Special Issue are organized according to the Sessions outlined above. The purpose of this foreword is to summarize the presentations and their key findings and recommend future research directions for each chemical.  相似文献

An outstanding array of prominent investigators gathered in Barcelona on May 28th and 29th, 2009 for the first Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Symposium to discuss progress in different areas of cancer research. Organized by Dr. Manel Esteller, this Symposium also publicized the launching of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Program (PEBC), of which Esteller is the director. The symposium covered a variety of topics, including the use of animal models to study cancer, the study of epigenetic pathways involved in tumorigenesis, and the future of epigenetic therapeutics. Some of the highlights of this meeting are summarized in this report.  相似文献

In this Symposium on the Ethics and Epistemology of Big Data, we present four perspectives on the ways in which the rapid growth in size of research databanks—i.e. their shift into the realm of “big data”—has changed their moral, socio-political, and epistemic status. While there is clearly something different about “big data” databanks, we encourage readers to place the arguments presented in this Symposium in the context of longstanding debates about the ethics, politics, and epistemology of biobank, database, genetic, and epidemiological research.  相似文献

This presentation is aimed at giving some background information on molecular biology, thus serving as an introduction to the Symposium on Molecular Biorheology held during the Sixth International Congress of Biorheology in Vancouver. The papers presented at this Symposium indicate that the use of molecular biological techniques allows the understanding of normal and abnormal rheological properties of cells and organs at the molecular level. It is hoped that these examples will provide an impetus for us to open new frontiers of research in biorheology by taking advantage of the powerful tools developed from recent advances in molecular biology.  相似文献

The Keystone Symposium on the Cell Cycle and Development brought together biologists with an interest in how cell cycle control is integrated into the ontogenetic program of multicellular organisms, and showcased research using a wide variety of systems from both animals and plants. A clear indication from the meeting is that this research is changing the conventional wisdom on both cell cycle control and development.  相似文献

“Balancing Interests”, the theme of the 17th International Symposium on Shift Work and Working Time held in Hoofddorp, The Netherlands (September 2005), refers to the ambition to reach an optimal balance between the various aspects of shift work. Economic, ergonomic, physical, and psychosocial factors all interact in determining the impact of shift work at the individual, organizational, and societal level. It is the challenge of this multidisciplinary field of research to model all relevant factors in such a way that it will allow us to optimize the dynamic trade-off between the yield and the risk of shift work. The organizers of the 17th International Symposium and the co-editors of these proceedings are convinced that the high quality of the contributions will bring us closer to this ultimate goal.  相似文献

The American Peptide Symposium has been a forum for new research in peptide science for almost thirty years. For young scientists it has provided an opportunity to present their experimental results and to learn more about ongoing research in this rapidly changing field. The 15th American Peptide Symposium, held in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A. in June, 1997, highlighted the research of young scientists in two ways. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows competed in the Young Investigators Poster Competition for awards for the most outstanding posters. The Young Investigators Mini-Symposium on the first day of the meeting provided an opportunity for selected young scientists to give oral presentations on their research. This special issue of Letters in Peptide Science highlights some of the results presented by young scientists as part of these two forums. The papers included exemplify the diversity of research in peptide science, from synthetic methodology to peptide structure to novel peptide design and biological activity. The outstanding quality of the research performed by these young scientists shows our field will be in good hands for the years to come.  相似文献

Population studies: Animal ecology and demography   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This concluding survey of the problems considered in the Symposium naturally falls into three sections. In the first brief section certain of the areas in which there is considerable difference in outlook are discussed with a view to ascertaining the nature of the differences in the points of view of workers in different parts of the field; no aspect of the Symposium has been more important than the reduction of areas of dispute. In the second section a rather detailed analysis of one particular problem is given, partly because the question, namely, the nature of the ecological niche and the validity of the principles of niche specificity has raised and continues to raise difficulties, and partly because discussion of this problem gives an opportunity to refer to new work of potential importance not otherwise considered in the Symposium. The third section deals with possible directions for future research. Concluding remarks reprinted from theCold Spring Harbor Symposia on quantitative Biology, Vol. 22, pp. 415–427 (1957) with the permission of the Long Island Biological Association.  相似文献

This dedicated issue of Chronobiology International is devoted to the selected proceedings of the 20th International Symposium on Shift Work and Working Time held in Stockholm, Sweden, 28 June to 1 July 2011. It constitutes the fifth such issue of the journal since 2004 dedicated to the selected proceedings to the meetings of the Working Time Society. The key theme of the 20th Symposium was "Biological Mechanisms, Recovery, and Risk Management in the 24-h Society." The collection of papers of this dedicated issue represents the best of contemporary research on the effects of night and rotating shift schedules on worker health and safety. The contents cover such topics as sleep restriction, injuries, health, and performance of night work and rotating shiftwork, plus light treatment as a countermeasure against the circadian disruption of shiftwork. The majority of the papers are observational field studies, including some of large sample size, and three studies are well-designed laboratory experiments.  相似文献

RNA research is alive and well. The joyride for those studying the biochemistry and molecular biology of RNA continues, although perhaps not at the thrill-a-month pace of recent years. The Keystone Symposium provided an opportunity to gain deeper insight into RNA-based biological phenomena by attempting to place current research in an evolutionary context. In this sense the meeting was an unqualified success. The meeting participants, having been warmed by the New Mexico sun and the chile-laden cuisine, now return to their laboratories determined to pursue not only the details of RNA biochemistry and molecular biology, but also the evolutionary implications of their work.  相似文献

Will installment of a few fences and rangers be sufficient to secure the rich orchid floral in an economically challenged area under the current rapidly changing environments? What are the research and restoration needs? We convened the Guangxi International Orchid Conservation Symposium in May 2009 in Leye county, a remote, rural area in southwestern China that is rich in orchids, to address these questions. Symposium participants examined orchid conservation issues from various angles, as reflected in this volume. Although the biological factors in orchid conservation were emphasized, social factors (i.e. protected area - people relations) were also presented here. These reviews and analyses will inform conservation workers in China as well as around the world.  相似文献

The 2010 Yale Research Symposium on Complementary and Integrative Medicine highlighted original research in related areas by Yale faculty and provided a forum to discuss and debate issues of evidence and plausibility. In this brief report, we describe selected presentations on such diverse foci as nutritional influences on cancer, acupuncture for low back pain, protein intake's effects on bone consumption, Chinese herb-derived adjuvant chemotherapy, and the relationship between anger and cardiac arrhythmia. This symposium demonstrated that rigorous research methods are being used to study unconventional therapies and that an integrative medicine approach requires a solid scientific foundation.  相似文献
