Geographic locality and host identity shape fungal endophyte communities in cupressaceous trees 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Understanding how fungal endophyte communities differ in abundance, diversity, taxonomic composition, and host affinity over the geographic ranges of their hosts is key to understanding the ecology and evolutionary context of endophyte–plant associations. We examined endophytes associated with healthy photosynthetic tissues of three closely related tree species in the Cupressaceae (Coniferales): two native species within their natural ranges [Juniperus virginiana in a mesic semideciduous forest, North Carolina (NC); Cupressus arizonica, under xeric conditions, Arizona (AZ)], and a non-native species planted in each site (Platycladus orientalis). Endophytes were recovered from 229 of 960 tissue segments and represented at least 35 species of Ascomycota. Isolation frequency was more than threefold greater for plants in NC than in AZ, and was 2.5 (AZ) to four (NC) times greater for non-native Platycladus than for Cupressus or Juniperus. Analyses of ITS rDNA for 109 representative isolates showed that endophyte diversity was more than twofold greater in NC than in AZ, and that endophytes recovered in AZ were more likely to be host-generalists relative to those in NC. Different endophyte genera dominated the assemblages of each host species/locality combination, but in both localities, Platycladus harboured less diverse and more cosmopolitan endophytes than did either native host. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses for four classes of Ascomycota (Dothideomycetes, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycetes, Eurotiomycetes) based on LSU rDNA data (ca 1.2 kb) showed that well-supported clades of endophytes frequently contained representatives of a single locality or host species, underscoring the importance of both geography and host identity in shaping a given plant's endophyte community. Together, our data show that not only do the abundance, diversity, and taxonomic composition of endophyte communities differ as a function of host identity and locality, but that host affinities of those communities are variable as well. 相似文献

Questions: 1. What are the distribution and habitat associations of non‐native (neophyte) species in riparian zones? 2. Are there significant differences, in terms of plant species diversity, composition, habitat condition and species attributes, between plant communities where non‐natives are present or abundant and those where non‐natives are absent or infrequent? 3. Are the observed differences generic to non‐natives or do individual non‐native species differ in their vegetation associations? Location: West Midlands Conurbation (WMC), UK. Methods: 56 sites were located randomly on four rivers across the WMC. Ten 2 m × 2 m quadrats were placed within 15 m of the river to sample vegetation within the floodplain at each site. All vascular plants were recorded along with site information such as surrounding land use and habitat types. Results: Non‐native species were found in many vegetation types and on all rivers in the WMC. There were higher numbers of non‐natives on more degraded, human‐modified rivers. More non‐native species were found in woodland, scrub and tall herb habitats than in grasslands. We distinguish two types of communities with non‐natives. In communities colonized following disturbance, in comparison to quadrats containing no non‐native species, those with non‐natives had higher species diversity and more forbs, annuals and shortlived monocarpic perennials. Native species in quadrats containing non‐natives were characteristic of conditions of higher fertility and pH, had a larger specific leaf area and were less stress tolerant or competitive. In later successional communities dominated by particular non‐natives, native diversity declined with increasing cover of non‐natives. Associated native species were characteristic of low light conditions. Conclusions: Communities containing non‐natives can be associated with particular types of native species. Extrinsic factors (disturbance, eutrophication) affected both native and non‐native species. In disturbed riparian habitats the key determinant of diversity is dominance by competitive invasive species regardless of their native or non‐native origin. 相似文献

Emergent trees may have an influence on the volume and the spatial distribution of water input into agroforestry stands and may thus affect water availability for the main crops. Our goal was to analyze the influence of such trees on rainfall distribution in a cacao agroforest area in the rainforest margin zone of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The emergent trees studied belong to the species Bischofia javanica (Phyllanthaceae) and were 15 m high remnants from the natural forest. A set of 96 throughfall gauges was systematically distributed underneath canopies of cacao only, and underneath canopies of cacao plus emergent trees (cacao plus trees). Mistletoes constitute an important food resource for animals in many ecosystems. However, these plants are considered pests in urban areas because of deleterious effects they have on the host trees. Studies in urban areas were mostly focused on listing host species or procedures to control the “pest”. In this sense, broader studies including several aspects of mistletoes ecology in urban ecosystems are still missing. We studied the interaction of the mistletoe, Phoradendron affine, with its dispersers and hosts in two urban sites in Uberlândia, Brazil. Phoradendron affine fruits were consumed almost exclusively by Euphonia chlorotica, which was crucial for seed germination. Parasitism was recorded in five hosts, two native (Handroanthus chrysotrichus and Tabebuia roseoalba) and three exotic species (Spathodea campanulata, Ligustrum lucidum and Melia azedarach). Mistletoes were found parasitizing larger host trees, a trend commonly reported for mistletoe-host interaction. Mistletoe seed germination was not affected by the trees species, whether host or non-host, but the radicle of germinated seeds could not penetrate the bark and seedlings invariably died in non-host species. We found a high prevalence of parasitism in our study, in comparison to what previous studies reported for natural areas. The spatial distribution of the hosts and high light incidence on isolated host trees may lead to this high prevalence in urban areas. Rather than eradicated, mistletoes in urban areas should be ecologically managed and their importance for bird species conservation must be considered. More studies to determine which bird species are favoured by mistletoe presence in urban areas will be essential for this purpose. 相似文献

Field observations over a three-year period were used to document the floristic composition, flowering and fruiting sequences of the Sarcopoterium spinosa Mediterranean batha of Ariel. This plant community was found to be species-rich, with high percentages of annuals, bushes and geophytes, low percentages of herbaceous plants, climbers and trees, and ten species considered rare in Israel. Typical Mediterranean characteristics were observed in the S. spinosa batha: spring flowering reaching a peak in April, small between-year variation in flowering and fruiting, most species having Mediterranean distribution, and partial resistance to fire. 相似文献

The felid-specific urinary odour compound 3-mercapto-3-methylbutanol and its precursors have been found in several felid species in captivity, but its presence in wild felids has not previously been investigated. We analysed the naturally deposited scent marks from three species of wild, free-ranging big cats in Northern Botswana and found 3-mercapto-3-methylbutanol in four samples of leopard urine (N = 13), but not in lion urine (N = 15) or cheetah urine (N = 6). Individual variation in the presence of the tomcat compound in samples from big cats in the wild may reconcile conflicting results from captive cats. 相似文献

The downy mildew pathogen of basil (Ocimum spp.) has caused considerable damage throughout the past five years, and an end to the epidemics is not in sight. The downy mildew of coleus (Solenostemon spp.) is just emerging and here we report that it was very recently introduced into Germany. Although it has been recognised that these pathogens are a major threat, the identity of the pathogens is still unresolved, and so it is difficult to devise quarantine measures against them. Using morphological comparison and molecular phylogenetic reconstructions we confirmed in this study that the downy mildews of basil and coleus are unrelated to Peronospora lamii, which is a common pathogen of the weed Lamium purpureum. In addition, we conclude by the investigation of the type specimen of P. swingleii and downy mildew specimens on Salvia officinalis that the newly occurring pathogens are not identical to P. swingleii on Salvia reflexa. The taxonomy of the downy mildew pathogens of hosts from the Lamiaceae and, in particular, from the tribes Mentheae and Elsholtzieae, is discussed, and a new species is described to accommodate the downy mildew pathogen of basil and coleus, which is the first downy mildew pathogen known to be parasitic to hosts of the tribe Ocimeae. 相似文献

In the Florida Everglades, nutrient enrichment from agricultural outflow and the change in hydrology have collectively contributed to the expansion of cattails (Typha spp.). To assess the effectiveness of prescribed fire in controlling cattails and to predict vegetation dynamics after the fire, it is important to understand the seasonal variation of the soil seed bank and how the seed bank is affected by nutrient enrichment and fire. This paper investigates the effects of season, nutrient enrichment, and fire on soil seed bank species composition, richness, and density along a nutrient gradient in Water Conservation Area 2A (WCA 2A) of the Florida Everglades. Species richness was significantly affected by nutrient enrichment and season but not their interaction. Total seed density, however, was significantly affected by the interaction between nutrient enrichment and season. Yet, at species level, the relationship between seed density, nutrient enrichment and season varied. The highest seed density of cattail occurred in summer at highly enriched sites, but that of sawgrass occurred in fall regardless of enrichment; the seed density of water lily was very low regardless of season and nutrient enrichment, and the highest Amarathus seed density occurred at highly enriched sites year round. Moreover, germination timing differed greatly among species. While cattail seeds had a short incubation period and started to germinate 2–3 days after initiation of the germination assay, sawgrass seeds generally started to germinate 4 weeks later. Further, both the prescribed summer fire at the highly enriched site and the natural winter fire at the moderately enriched site reduced the seed density of cattail but not of sawgrass. Our results suggest that fire application for vegetation recovery in WCA 2A would benefit from explicitly considering seasonal dynamics of the seed bank. 相似文献

The endogenous tonB gene of Escherichia coli was used as a target for spontaneous deletion mutations which were isolated from ruvAB-, recG-, and ruvC- cells. The rates of tonB mutation were essentially the same in ruv+, ruvAB-, recG-, and ruvC- cells. We analyzed tonB mutants by sequencing. In the ruv+, recG-, and ruvC- strains, the spectra were different from those obtained from the ruvAB- cells, where deletions dominated followed by IS insertions, base substitutions, and frameshifts, in that order. We then analyzed the tonB-trp large deletion, due to simultaneous mutations of the trp operon, and found that the frequency in ruvAB- was higher than those in ruv+, recG-, and ruvC- cells. To characterize deletion formation further, we analyzed all the tonB mutants from one colicin plate. Seven deletions were identified at five sites from the 45 tonB mutants of ruv+ cells and 24 deletions at 11 sites from the 43 tonB mutants of ruvAB- cells. Thus, the ruvAB- strain is a deletion mutator. We discuss the role of RuvAB in avoiding deletions. 相似文献

Species richness and composition of the Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera) were studied in larch (Larix kaempheri [Lamb.] Carrière) plantations, secondary forests, and primary forests. In addition, the effects of forest management practices,
such as thinning and long rotation, were examined in the larch plantation. The species richness of Chrysomelidae was higher
in the larch plantation than in the secondary forest or in the primary forest. Among the larch plantations, the species richness
in old-aged plantations was higher than that in middle-aged plantations. The composition of the beetle assemblages in the
larch plantation differed from that in the secondary forest or in the primary forest. Exosoma akkoae (Chujo), Batophila acutangula Heikertinger, and Calomicrus nobyi Chujo were caught with a bias toward the larch plantation. Longitarsus succineus (Foudras) and Sphaeroderma tarsatum Baly were caught more in the secondary forest and the primary forest, respectively. More B. acutangula and S. tarsatum were caught in stands where their host plants occurred at higher rates. Species richness of understory plants was an important
factor for chrysomlid species richness, and frequency of host occurrence affected the number of individuals of leaf beetles
examined. It seems that forest types and forest management practices affect host plants as well as Chrysomelidae, and that

Moesziomyces penicillariae (Brefield) Vànky is a basidiomycete fungus responsible for smut disease on pearl millet, an important staple food in the sub-Sahelian zone. We revisited the life cycle of this fungus. Unlike other Ustilaginales, mating of sporidia was never observed and monoclonal cultures of monokaryotic sporidia were infectious in the absence of mating with compatible partner. These data argued for an atypical monokaryotic diploid cell cycle of M. penicillariae, where teliospores only form solopathogenic sporidia. After inoculation of monoclonal solopathogenic strains on spikelets, the fungus infects the ovaries and induces the folding of the micropilar lips, as observed during early pollination steps. The infected embryo then becomes disorganized and the fungus invades peripheral ovary tissues before sporulating. We evaluated the systemic growth abilities of the fungus. After root inoculation, mycelium was observed around and inside the roots. As argued by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection using specific primers for M. penicillariae, the fungus can grow from roots to the caulinar meristems. In spite of this systemic growth, no sori were formed on the varieties of pearl millet tested after root inoculation. All together, these data suggest that the reduced life cycle of M. penicillariae – i.e. dispersal of ‘ready to infect’ solopathogenic sporidia, floral infection – is an adaptation to the aetiology of this disease to short-cycle pearl millet varieties from the sub-Sahel. 相似文献

To investigate the role of Glu196 of leucine aminopeptidase from Streptomyces griseus (SGAP) in SGAP activation by calcium and substrate specificity, we constructed E196X SGAP by saturation mutagenesis. Most mutations led to the abrogation of SGAP activation by calcium, and substitution with Lys led to a marked increase in activity toward Asp-p-nitroanilide (pNA) and a decrease in that toward Lys-pNA. A similar result was obtained from the investigation using non-calcium-activated enzyme from Streptomyces septatus (SSAP). These results indicate that Glu196 of SGAP is associated with the environment around the substrate binding site besides its role in SGAP activation by calcium. 相似文献

Firing and resetting of traps in aquatic Utricularia species are associated with water flows and trap volume changes. In this study, trap thickness was used as a measure of water flow and was monitored automatically using an electronic position sensor. Isolated traps from three aquatic Utricularia species were monitored over the course of 1-2 days to verify spontaneous firings (without any mechanical stimulation) and describe their basic characteristics. Isolated traps of three Utricularia species were initially fired by mechanical stimulation and allowed to naturally reset within a period of 24-48 h. Within this resting period, spontaneous firings were found in the traps of all species and in two trap age categories of U. vulgaris. The timing of spontaneous firings was found to be irregular. Spontaneous firings ranged between 0.29 and 2.4 during the 24-h resting period and the mean time between two spontaneous firings was highly variable within each species (319-891 min). There was no quantitative difference between spontaneous and mechanically stimulated firings of the traps. Spontaneous firings could explain how phytoplankton or detritus enters traps even when no prey species are present. 相似文献

The abundance and diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) was assessed based on the collection of basidiocarps during 12 months comprising the spring of 1995, and the summer, autumn, and winter of 1996, in three stands of young, middle-aged, and rotation age plantations of Pinus taeda and Eucalyptus dunnii, in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. A total of 3,085 collections yielded 34 presumed EMF taxa in ten genera, including mushroom-like and sequestrate species. Fruiting patterns of EMF differed with host and season, and host specificity was apparent in some. The overall relative importance (RI) and the Shannon diversity index (H) suggested that stands of E. dunnii had a more diverse aboveground EMF community than those of P. taeda. Overall, species of Scleroderma and Laccaria were not only the most abundant but also had the highest biomass values. The results show that a small number of species of abundant biomass and a larger number of species of less-abundant biomass characterize each forest class. 相似文献

Abies alba Mill. (European silver fir) and Fagus sylvatica L. (beech) are Eurosiberian species dispersed over the Iberian Peninsula. Climate change predictions indicate a rise in temperature and a decrease in precipitation in this region, threatening the future existence of these species. In the present study we analyzed the future topo-climatic suitability of Abies alba and Fagus sylvatica and the mixed forests of these two species, using the General Linear Models technique and data from the third National Forest Inventory (Ministerio de Agricultura PyA, 2007). We considered two modeling approaches based on niche theory: modeling community (Abieti-Fagetum) and overlapping individual species models. General trends showed an overall decrease in both species’ topo-climatic suitability and indicated that the Pyrenees will play a crucial role as a climatic refuge. The modeling approaches markedly differed, however, in their current and future spatial agreement. Despite good accuracy results, community modeling through co-occurrence does not encompass the environmental space of individual species prejudicing future assessments in new environmental situations, suggesting a need for future studies in community modeling. 相似文献

Analysis of ITS 1 and ITS 2 sequences in the pearl oysters Pinctada albina, Pinctada chemnitzi, Pinctada fucata, Pinctada fucata martensii, Pinctada imbricata, Pinctada margaritifera, Pinctada maxima, Pinctada nigra and Pinctada radiata was carried out. Homogeneity test of substitution patterns suggests that GC contents are highest in P. margaritifera and P. maxima and chromosomal rearrangements occurred in P. chemnitzi. These observations indicate that P. margaritifera and P. maxima are primitive species and P. chemnitzi is a recent species. Phylogenetic analysis shows that the pearl oysters studied constitute three clades with P. margaritifera and P. maxima forming the basal clade, congruent with results revealed by the substitution pattern test. The second clade consists of P. fucata, P. fucata martensii and P. imbricata. Low genetic distances among these taxa indicate that they may be conspecific. The remaining species make up the third clade and low genetic divergence between P. albina and P. nigra suggests that they may represent the same species. The ITS 1 sequence of P. radiata in GenBank is almost identical to that of P. chemnitzi determined in the present study and we suspect that the specimen used for the P. radiata sequence was misidentified. 相似文献
