Nitrogen (N) deposition has increased substantially since the second half of the 20th century due to human activities. This increase of reactive N into the biosphere has major implications for ecosystem functioning, including primary production, soil and water chemistry and producer community structure and diversity. Increased N deposition is also linked to the decline of insects observed over recent decades. However, we currently lack a mechanistic understanding of the effects of high N deposition on individual fitness, species richness and community structure of both invertebrate and vertebrate consumers. Here, we review the effects of N deposition on producer–consumer interactions, focusing on five existing ecological frameworks: C:N:P ecological stoichiometry, trace element ecological stoichiometry, nutritional geometry, essential micronutrients and allelochemicals. We link reported N deposition-mediated changes in producer quality to life-history strategies and traits of consumers, to gain a mechanistic understanding of the direction of response in consumers. We conclude that high N deposition influences producer quality via eutrophication and acidification pathways. This makes oligotrophic poorly buffered ecosystems most vulnerable to significant changes in producer quality. Changes in producer quality between the reviewed frameworks are often interlinked, complicating predictions of the effects of high N deposition on producer quality. The degree and direction of fitness responses of consumers to changes in producer quality varies among species but can be explained by differences in life-history traits and strategies, particularly those affecting species nutrient intake regulation, mobility, relative growth rate, host-plant specialisation, ontogeny and physiology. To increase our understanding of the effects of N deposition on these complex mechanisms, the inclusion of life-history traits of consumer species in future study designs is pivotal. Based on the reviewed literature, we formulate five hypotheses on the mechanisms underlying the effects of high N deposition on consumers, by linking effects of nutritional ecological frameworks to life-history strategies. Importantly, we expect that N-deposition-mediated changes in producer quality will result in a net decrease in consumer community as well as functional diversity. Moreover, we anticipate an increased risk of outbreak events of a small subset of generalist species, with concomitant declines in a multitude of specialist species. Overall, linking ecological frameworks with consumer life-history strategies provides a mechanistic understanding of the impacts of high N deposition on producer–consumer interactions, which can inform management towards more effective mitigation strategies. 相似文献

Spatial variability in the distribution of macroalgae and invertebrates was examined at a number of sites in the Strait of
Magellan. Two main predictions of models of zonation were tested in this study: (1) consistency in patterns of vertical distribution
among sites one to tens of kilometers apart, and (2) homogeneity between areas at the same level on the shore, tens to hundreds
of meters apart. Two types of habitat were considered: continuous rocky shores and blocks of rock in gravel beaches. In the
former habitat, percent cover estimates of sessile organisms (algae and mussels) were obtained from three replicated plots
(0.5 × 0.5 m) sampled non-destructively in each of three random areas (stretches of shore about 20 m long) at each of three
levels on the shore: high, middle and low intertidal zone. This procedure was repeated at six different sites along the Chilean
coast of the Strait of Magellan. Blocks of rock were sampled at two sites about 1 km apart. Estimates of the abundance of
sessile (barnacles and mussels) and mobile (limpets) organisms were obtained for six blocks at each of two levels on the shore
(high and low intertidal zone) at each site. At each level on the shore, three blocks were sampled on the top and three on
the vertical sides. A single plot was sampled on each block. This design allowed a test of the null hypothesis of no interactive
effects between position on the blocks and level on the shore. Both the predictions were falsified: (1) there were large between-site
differences in the vertical structure of assemblages and (2) variability between areas at the same level on the shore was
large for some of the most common algae. In contrast, the null hypothesis of no interactive effects of position on the blocks
and level on the shore was retained. The results of this study show that vertical position on the shore alone is not a good
predictor of the structure of assemblages of benthic organisms in the rocky intertidal of the Strait of Magellan.

A coevolutionary model is developed of the interaction between a host and an internal parasitoid, where the outcome of parasitism depends upon the extent to which individual hosts invest in resistance mechanisms and individual parasitoids in countermeasures (virulence). The host and parasitoid are assumed to have coupled population dynamics (of Nicholson–Bailey form) and to be composed of a series of asexual clones with different levels of resistance and virulence. Investment in resistance and virulence mechanisms is assumed to be costly. The model has two main outcomes. First, if resistance is relatively costly compared to virulence, the host may be selected not to invest in resistance mechanisms despite parasitoid investment in virulence, in effect trading off the risks of parasitism against the savings in costs. A number of cases which appear to correspond to this result have been reported. Second, for most other feasible parameter values, an arms race occurs between host and parasitoid, until effective resistance becomes so costly that the host abandons defence. This abandonment is followed by a reduction in parasitoid virulence and the cycle begins again. These cycles may explain reports of persistent additive genetic variation in resistance and virulence, and may also contribute towards population dynamic stability. 相似文献

Pollination biology of 41 plants species of 21 families blooming in the forest understory was investigated in a lowland mixed diplerocarp forest in Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak. Among these species, 29 species (71%) were pollinated by bees, four (10%) by nectariniid birds, three by small dipterans, and others by moths, butterflies, syrphid flies, wasps, and beetles. The 29 bee-pollinated species consisted of five distinct pollination guilds: ten species pollinated by medium traplining bees (two Amegilla species), nine by small traplining bees (three halictid and a xylocopine species), two by stingless bees and beetles, seven by stingless bees, and one by megachilid bees. The bees constituting the first two guilds were shade-loving, swiftly flying, long-tongued trapliners. Proboscis lengths of these pollinators correlated with flower depth of the host plant. Pollination systems in the forest understory were distinguished from that in the canopy by the prevalence of specific interactions, the number of traplining solitary bees, and lack of pollination systems by mass-recruiting eusocial bees, large Xylocopa bees, thrips, bats, and wind. These characteristics are largely similar between the Palaeotropics and the Neotropics through convergence of nectarivorous birds (spiderhunters vs. hummingbirds) and traplining bees (Amegilla vs. euglossine bees). 相似文献

Species coexistence involving trophic interactions has been investigated under two theoretical frameworks—partitioning shared
resources and accessing exclusive resources. The influence of body size on coexistence is well studied under the exclusive
resources framework, but has received less attention under the shared-resources framework. We investigate body-size-dependent
allometric extensions of a classical MacArthur-type model where two consumers compete for two shared resources. The equilibrium
coexistence criteria are compared against the general predictions of the alternative framework over exclusive resources. From
the asymmetry in body size allometry of resource encounter versus demand our model shows, counterintuitively, and contrary
to the exclusive resource framework, that a smaller consumer should be competitively superior across a wide range of supplies
of the two resource types. Experimental studies are reviewed to resolve this difference among the two frameworks that arise
from their respective assumptions over resource distribution. Another prediction is that the smaller consumer may have relatively
stronger control over equilibrium resource abundance, and the loss of smaller consumers from a community may induce relatively
stronger trophic cascades. Finally, from satiating consumers’ functional response, our model predicts that greater difference
among resource sizes can allow a broader range of consumer body sizes to coexist, and this is consistent with the predictions
of the alternative framework over exclusive resources. Overall, this analysis provides an objective comparison of the two
alternative approaches to understand species coexistence that have heretofore developed in relative isolation. It advances
classical consumer–resource theory to show how body size can be an important factor in resource competition and coexistence. 相似文献

It has been shown that isolation of sea urchin blastomeres before the post-division adhesion leads mainly to the formation
of equal blastomeres at the stage of 4th cleavage division, whereas isolation after adhesion results in the formation of micromeres
simultaneous with that in intact embryos. Similar results were obtained in five sea urchin species. It has been concluded
that there exists a critical point in the cleavage process, when blastomeres exchange information that determines the further
cleavage pattern. It has been shown with this “micromere model” that serotonin and its analogs influence the cleavage pattern
of half-embryos. These data have served as a basis for the hypothesis of “protosynapse,” a bilaterally symmetric structure
in which the blastomeres are not only source and target of the signal but also a passive obstacle to leakage of the signal
substance from the interblastomere cleft to the milieu. Such a structure may also specify the primary asymmetry of the blastomeres.
The micromere model may be useful in specific pharmacological screening. 相似文献

Summary Studies over the last 15 years have revealed that deep-sea benthic megainvertebrates show a variety of reproductive patterns that are adapted to the deep-sea, an environment in which the fauna occurs at low densities and resources are sparse. In the NE Atlantic the majority of species reproduce year round whilst a limited number of species reproduce on a seasonal basis believed to be entrained by the deposition of surface derived organic material on the deep-sea bed. A third pattern of rapid growth and early reproduction is found in a limited number of species that utilize unpredictable and ephemeral resources in the deep sea. Examination of the fertilization and behavioural biology of species from the bathyal depths suggest some species enhance fertilization success by forming pairs during their breeding season. However, the same concentration of sperm, as seen in shallow water invertebrates, is required for successful fertilization. At least one deep-sea species of echinoid requires high pressure for successful embryogenesis suggesting a depth-related segregation of deep-sea fauna. The origin of megafaunal populations of deep-sea invertebrates in the N. Atlantic is discussed in the light of these new data in relation to varying reproductive patterns and the environmental changes that have occurred during the last deglaciation. 相似文献

Abstract The present work is a study of the blue-green algae living in the coralloid roots of Macrozamia communis and isolated from Macrozamia communis in culture. The light and electron microscopic study pointed out the distribution of these microorganisms in the cortical area of coralloids and did not reveal any cells invaded by bacteria. On the basis of their aspect the blue-green algae living either in the coralloid roots or in culture were classified as belonging to the genus Nosloc, with some features of Nosloc commune. Inside the coralloids the cells of the blue-green algae were surrounded by abundant mucilage and contain granulations. In culture the blue-green algae were on the contrary very poor in mucilage and rich in polyphosphate granules. Numerous phycobilosomes were ranged along the outside of the thylakoid membranes in alternate arrangement to the granules of the neighbouring lamellae. 相似文献

Do biotic interactions shape both sides of the humped‐back model of species richness in plant communities? 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

A humped-back relationship between species richness and community biomass has frequently been observed in plant communities, at both local and regional scales, although often improperly called a productivity-diversity relationship. Explanations for this relationship have emphasized the role of competitive exclusion, probably because at the time when the relationship was first examined, competition was considered to be the significant biotic filter structuring plant communities. However, over the last 15 years there has been a renewed interest in facilitation and this research has shown a clear link between the role of facilitation in structuring communities and both community biomass and the severity of the environment. Although facilitation may enlarge the realized niche of species and increase community richness in stressful environments, there has only been one previous attempt to revisit the humped-back model of species richness and to include facilitative processes. However, to date, no model has explored whether biotic interactions can potentially shape both sides of the humped-back model for species richness commonly detected in plant communities. Here, we propose a revision of Grime's original model that incorporates a new understanding of the role of facilitative interactions in plant communities. In this revised model, facilitation promotes diversity at medium to high environmental severity levels, by expanding the realized niche of stress-intolerant competitive species into harsh physical conditions. However, when environmental conditions become extremely severe the positive effects of the benefactors wane (as supported by recent research on facilitative interactions in extremely severe environments) and diversity is reduced. Conversely, with decreasing stress along the biomass gradient, facilitation decreases because stress-intolerant species become able to exist away from the canopy of the stress-tolerant species (as proposed by facilitation theory). At the same time competition increases for stress-tolerant species, reducing diversity in the most benign conditions (as proposed by models of competition theory). In this way our inclusion of facilitation into the classic model of plant species diversity and community biomass generates a more powerful and richer predictive framework for understanding the role of plant interactions in changing diversity. We then use our revised model to explain both the observed discrepancies between natural patterns of species richness and community biomass and the results of experimental studies of the impact of biodiversity on the productivity of herbaceous communities. It is clear that explicit consideration of concurrent changes in stress-tolerant and competitive species enhances our capacity to explain and interpret patterns in plant community diversity with respect to environmental severity. 相似文献

This paper presents seasonal in situ monitoring data on benthic coverage and coral–algae interactions in high-latitude fringing reefs of the Northern Red Sea over a period of 19 months. More than 30% of all
hermatypic corals were involved in interaction with benthic reef algae during winter compared to 17% during summer, but significant
correlation between the occurrence of coral–algae interactions and monitored environmental factors such as temperature and inorganic nutrient availability was not detected.
Between 5 and 10-m water depth, the macroalgae Caulerpa serrulata,
Peyssonnelia capensis and filamentous turf algae represented almost 100% of the benthic algae involved in interaction with corals. Turf algae were
most frequently (between 77 and 90% of all interactions) involved in interactions with hermatypic corals and caused most tissue
damage to them. Maximum coral tissue loss of 0.75% day−1 was observed for Acropora-turf algae interaction during fall, while an equilibrium between both groups of organisms appeared during summer. Slow-growing
massive corals were more resistant against negative algal influence than fast-growing branching corals. Branching corals of
the genus Acropora partly exhibited a newly observed phenotypic plasticity mechanism, by development of a bulge towards the competing organism,
when in interaction with algae. These findings may contribute to understand the dynamics of phase shifts in coral reefs by
providing seasonally resolved in situ monitoring data on the abundance and the competitive dynamic of coral–algae interactions. 相似文献

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is explained by drug transporters with a drug-handling activity. Despite much work, MDR remains
multifaceted, and several conditions are required to generate drug resistance. The drug pumping was conceptually described
using a kinetic, i.e., temporal, approach. The re-emergence of physical biology has allowed us to take into account new parameters
focusing on the notion of space. This, in turn, has given us important clues regarding the process whereby drug and transporter
interact. We will demonstrate that the likelihood of drug-transporter meeting (i.e., the affinity) and thus interaction are
also driven by the mechanical interaction between drug molecular weight (MW) and the membrane mechanical properties. This
should allow us to mechanically control drug delivery. 相似文献

It is proposed in this paper that the term somatization as applied to the Chinese requires further exploration. By way of a study of Chinese language usage employing body-related expressions, an indirect method of finding the equivalence in meaning is demonstrated. Results of the study reveal the scope and depth of the symbolic meanings of the body in Chinese culture. 相似文献

Biotic interactions may strongly affect the distribution of individual species and the resulting patterns of species richness. However, the impacts can vary depending on the species or taxa examined, suggesting that the influences of interactions on species distributions and diversity are not always straightforward and can be taxon-contingent. The aim of this study was therefore to examine how the importance of biotic interactions varies within a community. We incorporated three biotic predictors (cover of the dominant vascular species) into two correlative species richness modelling frameworks to predict spatial variation in the number of vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens in arctic–alpine Fennoscandia, in N Europe. In addition, predictions based on single-species distribution models were used to determine the nature of the impact (negative vs. positive outcome) of the three dominant species on individual vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen species. Our results suggest that biotic variables can be as important as abiotic variables, but their relative contributions in explaining the richness of sub-dominant species vary among dominant species, species group and the modelling framework implemented. Similarly, the impacts of biotic interactions on individual species varied among the three species groups and dominant species, with the observed patterns partly reflecting species’ biogeographic range. Our study provides additional support for the importance of biotic interactions in modifying arctic–alpine biodiversity patterns and highlights that the impacts of interactions are not constant across taxa or biotic drivers. The influence of biotic interactions, including the taxon contingency and range-based impacts, should therefore be accounted for when developing biodiversity forecasts. 相似文献

Nodal signals are key regulators of mesoderm and endoderm development in vertebrate embryos. It has been observed experimentally that in Xenopus embryos the spatial range of Nodal signals is restricted by the signal Antivin (also known as Lefty). Nodal signals can activate both Nodal and Antivin, whereas Antivin is thought to antagonise Nodal by binding either directly to it or to its receptor. In this paper we develop a mathematical model of this signalling network in a line of cells. We consider the heterodimer and receptor-mediated inhibition mechanisms separately and find that, in both cases, the restriction by Antivin to the range of Nodal signals corresponds to wave pinning in the model. Our analysis indicates that, provided Antivin diffuses faster than Nodal, either mechanism can robustly account for the experimental data. We argue that, in the case of Xenopus development, it is wave pinning, rather than Turing-type patterning, that is underlying Nodal–Antivin dynamics. This leads to several experimentally testable predictions, which are discussed. Furthermore, for heterodimer-mediated inhibition to prevent waves of Nodal expression from propagating, the Nodal–Antivin complex must be turned over, and diffusivity of the complex must be negligible. In the absence of molecular mechanisms regulating these, we suggest that Antivin restricts Nodal signals via receptor-mediated, and not heterodimer-mediated, inhibition. 相似文献

This review deals with the effect of variations in phospholipid and sterol structure on the nature and magnitude of lipid-sterol interactions in lipid bilayer model membranes. The first portion of the review covers the effect of Chol itself on the thermotropic phase behavior and organization of a variety of different glycero- and sphingolipid membrane lipid classes, varying in the structure and charge of their polar headgroups and in the length and structure of their fatty acyl chains. The second part of this review deals with the effect of variations in sterol structure on the thermotropic phase behavior and organization primarily of the well studied DPPC model membrane system. In the third section, we focus on some of the contributions of sterol functional group chemistry, molecular conformation and dynamics, to sterol-lipid interactions. Using those studies, we re-examine the results of recently published experimental and computer-modeling studies to provide a new more dynamic molecular interpretation of sterol-lipid interactions. We suggest that the established view of the rigid sterol ring system and extended alkyl side-chain obtained from physical studies of cholesterol-phospholipid mixtures may not apply in lipid mixtures differing in their sterol chemical structure. 相似文献

It is postulated that there is a causal relationship between mechanical stimulus and the rate of bone healing post fracture. However, despite numerous experimental studies in the literature, no quantifiable relationship has been proposed. It is hypothesized in the present study that the temporal rate of bone fracture healing, measured in terms of callus stiffening per week, can be described mathematically based on the relative motions between bone fragments at the initial stage of the healing process. To test this, a comparative reanalysis of experimental data found in the literature was conducted. These individual data sets described a relationship between an initial intermittently applied peak interfragmentary strain and the change in interfragmentary motion or the increase in callus stiffness over time. The data were converted into a relative increase in stiffness, which normalised the results and reduced inter-study variability. The rates of healing for the various initial strains were compared, and based on this a mathematical phenomenological model was derived. Error analyses were then performed, which showed a high level of congruence between the in-vivo and simulated rates of healing. The results of the comparative analysis revealed that there is a positive correlation between the rate of callus stiffening and interfragmentary strain. Finally, the proposed model has shown for the first time that a quantifiable cause–and–effect relationship exists between the rate of bone healing and mechanical stimulus. 相似文献
