The study examined the response to variation in food ration within a breeding season on components of the reproductive performance of mature female three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus , a batch spawner. The main effect of food availability was on the duration of the inter-spawning interval (ISI). Low ration resulted in an increase in the number of days until the next spawning. A low ration during one inter-spawning interval increased the length of the next ISI, even if there was a high ration in the latter. Females that experienced high rations for two successive ISIs showed an increase in batch fecundity over the successive spawnings. There was no tendency for fish on low rations to produce bigger eggs or eggs with higher lipid concentration. Females on low ration had a lower carcass dry matter concentration and a lower liver dry weight immediately after their third spawning. Female sticklebacks responded to a low ration with little change in egg number or size, but a slight reduction in physiological condition. Egg characteristics and, to a lesser extent, batch fecundity are insensitive to current rate of food consumption, but the interval between spawnings is sensitive to both current and previous rates of consumption.  相似文献

The response of female three-spined sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) to differences in food ration during the breeding season was quantified for several variables related to reproductive performance. The measured protein and lipid contents (mg g−1) of eggs were unaffected by ration. Egg size increased with an increase in both ration and female size, but the proportional increase in egg size was much smaller than the proportional increase in ration. The best predictor of mean batch (clutch) fecundity and weight was female size. There was a small but significant increase in batch fecundity with ration, but the increase was not directly proportional to the increase in ration. The rate of spawning, total breeding season fecundity and total weight of eggs spawned over the breeding season were sensitive to ration with breeding season fecundity and weight increasing in direct proportion to ration. Thus, in female sticklebacks, there is a hierarchy of sensitivity to ration in the response of variables related to reproduction.  相似文献

Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum , the convict cichlid, is a biparental, substrate-spawning, Central American cichlid. Male-female pairs were kept for 4 months on one of three food rations: high–1 g food daily; medium–1 g three times per week; low–1 g per week. The number of spawnings was directly related to the food ration. The fecundity of the females on the low and medium rations declined. At all rations the inter-spawning interval and egg size increased during the experiment. Egg size was positively related to ration and the length of the inter-spawning interval, but the latter was inversely related to ration. Females on the high ration grew in weight while those on the low ration lost weight. Histological examination of the ovaries at the end of the experiment suggested that low rations reduced the proportion of oocytes that become vitellogenic. At the end of the experiment, the total, gonad and liver weight of females at a given length were significantly related to ration. No similar, significant effect was found for the males, although growth in length of the males was related to ration. Ration had no detectable effect on the histological appearance of the testes.

Female Three-spined sticklebacks spawn several times in a breeding season, at intervals of a few days. The changes that take place in females during the interval between successive spawnings were analysed. The average time between spawnings was 87.5 hours. Between spawnings females increased in weight by between 15 and 30%. The bulk of this weight increase was lost when the eggs were spawned. The increase in weight was because of an increase in weight of the ovaries, which showed an increase in both dry matter and water content. After spawning the ovaries formed 8 to 9% of the total body weight, and this increased to up to 24% just prior to the next spawning. The ovaries were maximally hydrated immediately after spawning. There were no significant changes in the calorific value of the ovaries, but the calorific value of the rest of the body was a minimum just after spawning. It was estimated that between spawnings females were making a net gain of energy at an average rate of 2 cal/hour. After spawning, courtship behaviour by the females waned, but recovered over the last half of the interval between spawnings. The inter-spawning interval of the Three-spined stickleback provides a useful situation in which physiological and nutritional aspects of reproduction in a teleost fish can be studied.  相似文献

Using a ‘model’ sepiolid, Euprymna tasmanica, this study investigated the role of maternal nutritional and thermal history on egg quality and subsequent embryo survival. E. tasmanica is a multiple spawner, therefore it was possible to track egg quality and hatching success over successive spawning episodes. A two-factor orthogonal experimental design, involving two feeding levels (high and low rations) and two temperatures (summer and winter), was implemented with half of the replicates used to explore embryonic development and the remaining half examining egg-yolk quality via fatty acid analysis. Differences in reproductive output and embryo mortality were largely attributed to maternal ration and not temperature. Females maintained on low ration produced smaller clutches, consisting of smaller eggs and exhibiting higher embryo mortality rates than high ration females. Both batch fecundity and relative hatching success declined over successive clutches. Lipid content was also significantly lower in low ration females, however, the relative quality in terms of lipid and fatty acid constituents was maintained regardless of treatment and spawning frequency. It is suggested that elevated embryo mortality rate in eggs spawned by low-fed females was a function of insufficient maternally derived yolk resources to fuel embryogenesis. Results indicate that maternal nutritional and reproductive history are important determinates for offspring survival, potentially having significant effects on the magnitude of subsequent recruitment events in squid populations.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior of female whitebelly damselfish, Amblyglyphidodon leucogaster, was investigated in the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea over two breeding seasons. Females were promiscuous, mating with 7–10 different males throughout the season. Females lay eggs in distinct batches, defined as the total number of eggs laid in a day. Generally females deposit a batch of eggs with one male (87.2%) and are capable of laying a new batch every other day. Egg batch size averaged 4009 eggs and females laid from 2 to 22 egg batches per season. The variation in spawning success was not correlated to body size. Females preferred to deposit eggs in nests that already contained early stage eggs (0–2 days old). Within a nest, females chose to lay eggs contiguous to the youngest egg batch, regardless if the nest contained either a single batch or multiple batches of different ages. Female within-nest spawning patterns appear to be a consequence of between nest preferences for nests with young eggs. It is proposed that the strong within-nest preference is a consequence of mate selection where females may use new egg batches as a visual cue as part of a copying style. Such a style may reduce the risk of predation and increase feeding opportunities, because less time is expended in mate selection, which would provide additional resources for egg production and ultimately increase female spawning success over the breeding season. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Among individuals of female three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus from a population in the Camargue, southern France, studied in 12 successive years, adult L T ranged from 31–64 mm, clutch size ranged from 33–660 eggs, and mean egg diameter per clutch ranged from 1.15–1.67 mm. Because the population was strictly annual, inter-annual variation corresponded to variation among generations having experienced different environmental conditions. Body mass varied significantly among years, suggesting an effect of varying environmental conditions. Gonad mass and clutch size increased with body mass, but mean egg diameter was not correlated to body mass. Body mass-adjusted gonad mass, interpreted as reproductive effort per clutch, did not vary significantly among years, suggesting that this trait was not influenced by environmental conditions. Body mass-adjusted clutch size and egg size varied significantly among years. Inter-annual variation in body length at breeding, clutch size and egg size was of the same order of magnitude as inter-population variation reported by other authors for this species. During the breeding season, reproductive effort and clutch size tended to increase. Egg size tended to decrease during the breeding season but this seasonal pattern varied among years. Observed life-history variation is discussed both in terms of its evolutionary significance and methodological implications in the study of life-history variation among populations.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive behavior of damselfish,Chromis notata, was studied at Mukaishima Island, Seto Inland Sea of Japan. Spawning occur synchronously among the fish in the study area except during a part of the breeding season. Neither spawnings nor hatchings, however, coincide with any particular phase of the lunar or tidal cycle. The intervals between the spawning peaks vary considerably during the breeding season. These results support the hypothesis that synchrony of breeding is facilitated by social interactions among the fish of a local area. The male inter-spawning intervals, and even the intervals between last spawning and next nesting, are longer than the female inter-spawning intervals in the beginning of breeding season. This delay of male spawning is attributed to the long incubation period and may have an influence on the male reproductive success.  相似文献

In the interval between successive spawnings, female sticklebacks consumed approximately their own wet weight of Tubifex. On average, for 100 cal of food consumed, 26 cal of eggs, 3 cal of somatic growth and 11 cal of faeces were produced. In the absence of somatic growth, the efficiency of egg production was estimated as nearly 30%, and it was predicted that in the absence of egg production, the efficiency of somatic growth would range from 20% for a fish of 0.8 g wet weight to 3% for 2 g fish.
The weight of eggs produced at a spawning was a function of the weight of the female but not of the amount of food consumed. If food consumption was not sufficient to cover the cost of egg production, the fish lost weight. Total production (the summation of egg production and somatic growth) was a function of the amount of food consumed.  相似文献

Silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus, were collected by fishing with drift gillnets on one spawning ground in Kuwait waters during 1998–2000. Fish size frequency, sex ratio, maturation cycle, spawning frequency, fecundity and egg weight were assessed. The length–weight relationship differed between sexes whereby females were significantly bigger than males. Spawning started in mid‐May and continued until early October. During this time the water temperature ranged from 26.0 to 32.8°C, salinity was ? 39.0‰ and water depth ranged between 5 and 12 m. Large females spawned earlier than young spawners and the overall percentage of males during the spawning period was 70.3%. Spawning occurred after 13.00 h, with peak spawning between 15.00 and 18.00 hours during outgoing tide. Mean daily spawning frequency amounted to 63.2%. Spawning activity was found to be associated with the lunar cycle and spawnings were concentrated during the first and third quarters of the moon period, indicating a semilunar reproduction cycle. It was concluded that a female would spawn at least six times during the season. No change was observed in relative fecundity during the peak spawning season (June–August). Average relative batch fecundity was 176.3 eggs g?1 somatic weight (SW), corresponding to a relative total fecundity of 1058 eggs g?1 SW, which is 1.5 times higher than estimates obtained from counting the standing stock of oocytes. Bigger fish produced heavier eggs and the egg weight decreased as the spawning season progressed. Based on gonadal cycles, oocyte size frequency distribution and total fecundity, we concluded that silver pomfret is a multiple batch spawner with indeterminate fecundity.  相似文献

Synopsis We describe the short-term patterns of egg production and release in the lemon tetra, Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis (Characidae) as observed over a six month aquarium study and then use our results and those of others to both describe general patterns and derive comparative predictions. Female lemon tetras ovulated about once every four days; differences among individuals were small and inconsistent. As in other species, the probability of ovulation depended strongly on time since last ovulation, indicative of an ovarian cycle; furthermore we found no obvious long-term patterns of ovulation within females and batch fecundity was independent of the length of the two previous interovulation intervals and of the one following. Each batch of ovulated eggs was released over an average of 23.1 spawning acts, beginning as soon as the lights went on in the morning. The number of spawning acts increased with ovulation fecundity but decreased with the number of other females spawning in the tank on that day. The mass of eggs produced every four days was greater than that of the remaining ovary, and the mass of eggs that could be produced in a season was greater than that of the female. This latter observation highlights the most important consequence of repeated reproduction within a season - increased reproductive output - and leads to predictions associating it with less seasonal environments (e.g. low latitudes), as well as with small ovaries and small body size. The significance of releasing a batch of eggs over many spawning acts remains unknown.  相似文献

Female three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus exposed to spring conditions (14) C and a photoperiod of 16L: 8D), and fed 6% of initial body weight per day of enchytraeid worms (controls) over 56 days, or either at regular 3-day or variable 1–5-day intervals between feeds, did not differ significantly in the proportion spawning (72%), in time to first spawning (24·5 days), in fecundity at first spawning (34) or in egg diameter (1·4 mm) at first spawning. There was no significant effect of feeding regime on lipid concentration of females immediately after first spawning (18·8% dry weight), but the experimental females had a slightly lower dry matter content and lower fresh and dry liver weight than controls. Eggs of females on the variable-interval regime had a higher lipid content than eggs from other groups. Days to spawning was correlated inversely and fecundity positively with initial length. Females adjusted their food intake to compensate for short periods of food deprivation, allowing them to maintain their reproductive performance at first spawning.  相似文献

The breeding season of Atherina boyeri living in the brackish lagoons of Mauguio, Pérols and Méjean (Hérault, southern France) was very protracted (February-September). The peak of the reproductive effort occurred in April, May and June. Larger fishes started spawning earlier, and stopped later, than smaller ones. Batch fecundity varied from 4 to 447 oocytes and was positively related to female length and weight. Monthly mean fecundity increased at the beginning of the breeding season and decreased between June and July. Individual mean oocyte diameter ranged from 1.34 to 1.94 mm and was not related to fish length. Monthly mean oocyte size declined throughout the breeding season as water temperature rose. There was no trade-off between number and egg size. The strategy of these sand smelts seemed well adapted to ensure spawning success without endangering their survival. The highest reproductive effort period occurred in such a way that environmental conditions were suitable to the best survival and growth of hatched larvae. When breeding ceased, fishes, particularly the youngest ones, had enough time to improve their condition before overwintering.  相似文献

Latitudinal variation in fitness-related traits has often been attributed to local adaptation to climates. In poikilotherms including fishes, lower temperatures and shorter reproductive seasons at high latitudes would be expected to cause a reduction in annual reproductive output of an individual. Theories of latitudinal compensation predict that organisms at high latitudes should evolve compensatory responses for these climatic effects. Therefore, latitudinal compensation in female reproductive rate (egg production rate), that individuals from high latitudes produce eggs at higher rates than those from lower latitudes, is likely to occur. I tested this hypothesis with a latitudinally widespread reef fish Pomacentrus coelestis that is a multiple batch spawner, from three different localities, from temperate to subtropical waters, within Japan. I used common-environment experiments at three different temperatures to compare reproductive capacity among local populations. In the experiments, average inter-spawning intervals were the shortest and average size-specific clutch weight was the heaviest in fish from the most northern locality across all temperatures, showing clear latitudinal clines. Thus, the northern fish can achieve higher reproductive output per unit time both by shortening inter-spawning intervals and increasing size-specific clutch weight. Additionally, faster egg production rate of the northern fish did not result from increased food consumption. This finding suggests that gross egg production efficiency was higher in the northern fish and that northern fish had a superior capacity for reproduction within a season. These results support the prediction that latitudinal compensation occurs in the female reproductive rate of P. coelestis. As the reproductive season of this species decreases drastically with increasing latitude, the observed cline in the reproductive rate must be an adaptive response to the local selective regime, i.e., length of the reproductive season. Such latitudinal compensation in female reproductive rates may be a common pattern in latitudinally widespread fishes.  相似文献

Hemiculter leucisculus are multiple spawners with indeterminate fecundity, although previous fecundity estimates have assumed a determinate spawning pattern. Batch fecundity and spawning frequency of H. leucisculus were studied in Erhai Lake, China, in which the fish, as an exotic species, has become a successful colonizer. Spawning frequency was 16.05 %, as determined from the percent of females with postovulatory follicles 12 to 36 h old during the peak reproductive period (from May 27 to August 8). The average interval between spawning was 6.2 days and there were more than 16 total spawning batches during the peak reproductive period. The average batch fecundity (mean ± SD) was 11,934?±?5,921 hydrated oocytes in 40 females (standard length or SL: 9.1–14.4 cm), while relative batch fecundity was 560?±?137 eggs g?1 wet weight. The total potential annual fecundity was approximately 190,944 oocytes over the whole spawning season and was much higher than the estimated standing stock (31,585 oocytes) of yolked oocytes (36 females, SL: 9.5–16.2 cm) at the beginning of the spawning season in April 2010. This high annual fecundity is likely to have contributed to successful invasion of Erhai Lake by H. leucisculus.  相似文献

We measured the reproductive output of Takydromus septentrionalis collected over 5 years between 1997 and 2005 to test the hypothesis that reproductive females should allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in a particular clutch and to individual eggs. Females laid 1–7 clutches per breeding season, with large females producing more, as well as larger clutches, than did small females. Clutch size, clutch mass, annual fecundity, and annual reproductive output were all positively related to female size (snout–vent length). Females switched from producing more, but smaller eggs in the first clutch to fewer, but larger eggs in the subsequent clutches. The mass-specific clutch mass was greater in the first clutch than in the subsequent clutches, but it did not differ among the subsequent clutches. Post-oviposition body mass, clutch size, and egg size showed differing degrees of annual variation, but clutch mass of either the first or the second clutch remained unchanged across the sampling years. The regression line describing the size–number trade-off was higher in the subsequent clutch than in the first clutch, but neither the line for first clutch, nor the line for the second clutch varied among years. Reproduction retarded growth more markedly in small females than in large ones. Our data show that: (1) trade-offs between size and number of eggs and between reproduction and growth (and thus, future reproduction) are evident in T. septentrionalis ; (2) females allocate an optimal fraction of accessible resources in current reproduction and to individual eggs; and (3) seasonal shifts in reproductive output and egg size are determined ultimately by natural selection.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 315–324.  相似文献

The upland bully is a prolific and widespread member of New Zealand freshwater fish communities that may mature at age 1 (or earlier). It begins spawning in spring, laying as many as eight clutches of eggs over the spring and summer, at periods as brief as 13 days. Ovaries contain two modes of maturing oocytes, so that oogenesis must be continual during the spawning season. This poses difficulties in fecundity estimation, which were solved by captive rearing. The ovoid eggs are about 2 mm long; egg size declines with clutch number during the summer, but increases with fish size. Clutch size varied, in 70 spawnings, from 121 to 880 eggs, with total seasonal fecundity up to >5000 eggs. The production of multiple clutches greatly increases seasonal fecundity and may explain the success of this species in sometimes unreliable or harsh environments.  相似文献

The effect of food level on the egg production of three-spined sticklebacks was studied experimentally. High food levels increased the percentage of fish that matured, and the weight of the fish at maturity. Weight at maturity was positively correlated with the number of spawnings, the mean number and the weight of eggs produced per spawning. Food level had no effect on the size of the eggs, whether size was expressed as wet or dry weight per egg. Fish on the highest food level spawned at shorter intervals than fish at the lower levels. A preliminary model of the effect of food supply on recruitment to a stickleback population is nresented.  相似文献

Sex differences in resource utilization by the peacock blenny   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents data on the seasonal variation of gonadosomatic, hepatosomatic and feeding indices in nesting males, females and female-like males of the blenniid fish Salaria pavo . Eviscerated condition factors, female fecundity and feeding rates are also presented. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that females maximize their feeding rates during reproduction, converting food into eggs through repeated spawning. Nesting males feed at a very low rate during the breeding season. It is argued that one major component of the reproductive costs in these males is the reduction of feeding opportunities. Female-like males present lower reproductive costs, which probably reflects the compromise between fertilizing some eggs and growing.  相似文献
