Phonomyogram (PMG, or acoustic myogram) is known to increase with force in isometric contractions. We investigated this relationship for dynamic contractions against different inertias. PMG and surface electromyogram (EMG) from biceps brachii and brachioradialis muscles were simultaneously recorded with the angular acceleration of elbow flexions. These were self-initiated movements (30 degrees) toward a fixed target and performed against two different inertias. PMG and EMG were integrated from the onset of the signal to the end of the acceleration phase. Phono- and electromechanical delays were also measured. For integrated EMG (iEMG), there was a linear relationship between integrated PMG (iPMG) and force, the slope of which did not depend on inertia. There was also a linear relationship between iPMG or iEMG and angular acceleration, with a higher slope for the highest inertia condition. There was also a family of linear relationships between iPMG or iEMG and angular acceleration, and their slopes depended on inertia. Measurements of the phono- and electromechanical delays showed that onset of PMG followed that of EMG but preceded onset of acceleration. It is suggested that PMG expresses tension of the underlying muscle contractile elements. Given the simplicity of the PMG method, we conclude that PMG allows convenient evaluation of muscle tension during human dynamic contraction.  相似文献

The electrical activity of the biceps brachii and pronator teres muscles is studied through the prono-supination of the forearm in some anisometrical conditions (dynamic work) when the inertia of the mobile system and the elbow position are being varied. The subjects are required to perform pronation, supination and flexion movements, either isolated or combined. From the findings obtained when the integrated electrical activity (Q) is related to the mechanical work (W), one can conclude that a. the Q-W linear relationship seems to characterize the chief function of a muscle, b. the slope of the Q-W relationship depends on the elbow position, c. the pronator muscles do not inhibit in a selective manner the biceps supinating function. So a bifunctional muscle seems to act as a whole.  相似文献

Horizontal "extension-flexion" movement of human arm at the elbow joint was studied. Humans performed movements in accordance with the instruction to ignore sudden trajectory changes that arose by the arm during lengthening of different elastic rods with friction. It was shown by multi-dimension regression analysis that the electric activity of biceps and triceps muscles of the shoulder was correlated first of all with the work of load and then with loading force, muscle work and other mechanic and myographic characteristics. One could suppose that information on energy quantities was contained in afferentation signals of the nervous system to correct the program commands on the spinal level. The purpose of correction was to preserve constant quantity of energy expenditure, as well as accuracy and duration of movement.  相似文献

The purpose of this work has been to develop a model of electromyographic (EMG) patterns during single-joint movements based on a version of the equilibrium-point hypothesis, a method for experimental reconstruction of the joint compliant characteristics, the dual-strategy hypothesis, and a kinematic model of movement trajectory. EMG patterns are considered emergent properties of hypothetical control patterns that are equally affected by the control signals and peripheral feedback reflecting actual movement trajectory. A computer model generated the EMG patterns based on simulated movement kinematics and hypothetical control signals derived from the reconstructed joint compliant characteristics. The model predictions have been compared to published recordings of movement kinematics and EMG patterns in a variety of movement conditions, including movements over different distances, at different speeds, against different-known inertial loads, and in conditions of possible unexpected decrease in the inertial load. Changes in task parameters within the model led to simulated EMG patterns qualitatively similar to the experimentally recorded EMG patterns. The model's predictive power compares it favourably to the existing models of the EMG patterns.  相似文献

Visually triggered forearm movements were analyzed by an Information Theory approach. Human subjects made smooth movements which were characterized by moderate speeds, ranging about 100 degrees per second, by continuity in the position and velocity traces, and attainment of final average EMG levels before completion of the movement. We calculated the information transmitted by final position, biceps EMG, triceps EMG, and the ratio of the EMGs. The results were: (1) The information transmitted by final joint angle increased with number of targets but gradually levelled off. The maximum value was slightly over 3 bits, corresponding to an equivalent number of less than nine independent arm positions for a single movement. (2) The information transmitted by the ratio of the EMGs exceeds that transmitted by the biceps or triceps alone. (3) A previous theoretical prediction based on a spring model (Sakitt, 1980a) gives a moderately good fit to the experimental EMG ratio as a function of final position over a large range of angles. Our results lend consistency to two ideas about the nature of visually triggered forearm movements. First, our finding about the EMG ratio suggests that the basic motor program for final position is probably in terms of relative allocation of innervations, rather than looking up individual values. Second, single movements of this kind transmit surprisingly little information. The purpose of this study was to use an electromyography (EMG) based muscle model to investigate the performance enhancement of stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) tasks at different elbow flexion-extension velocities. A torque motor was used to oscillate the forearms of seven healthy male subjects (23-40 years) during SSC and non-SSC contractions at four frequencies of movement (.58, 1.5, 2.4 and 3.3Hz) over a range of 105 degrees -162 degrees of elbow extension. The torque was integrated as a function of joint angle to yield the work produced by the elbow flexors. The elbow flexors were transcutaneously stimulated with a voltage equivalent to 60% maximum voluntary isometric contraction torque for 4s at 50Hz. EMG of the elbow flexors and extensors was recorded from the biceps and triceps respectively. The processed EMG was used to drive a Hill based model to predict the torque of the elbow flexors. Results indicate that muscle work increases from non-SSC to SSC trials. Work decreases for SSC and non-SSC trials with increasing velocity. The simulated constant activation muscle model predicted work well for all trials and conditions, indicating muscle model accuracy. The EMG driven model predicted well for all non-SSC trials, but significantly underestimated the work for SSC tasks, suggesting that the contractile component is directly involved in optimising muscle work during SSC tasks.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine how the triphasic electromyogram (EMG) pattern of muscle activation developed from the agonist muscle only pattern as movement time (tmov) decreased. Six adult women produced a series of 30 degrees elbow extension movements in the horizontal plane at speeds ranging from ballistic (less than 400-ms tmov) to very slow (greater than 800-ms tmov). Surface EMG from triceps brachii (agonist) and biceps brachii (antagonist) muscles were recorded, together with elbow angle, on a microcomputer. The results showed that triphasic EMG patterns developed systematically as tmov decreased from 1000 ms to less than 200 ms. In trials with very long tmov, many elbow extension movements were produced by a single continuous activation of the agonist triceps brachii muscle. As tmov decreased however, agonist activation became predominantly burst-like and other components of the triphasic EMG pattern [activation of the antagonist (Ant) and second agonist activation (Ag2)] began to appear. At the fastest movement speeds, triphasic EMG patterns (Ag1-Ant-Ag2, Ag1 being first activation of agonist muscle) were always present. This data indicated that the triphasic pattern of muscle activation was not switched on when a particular tmov was achieved. Rather, each component systematically developed until all were present, as distinctive bursts of activity, in most trials with tmov less than 400 ms.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to analyse the effects of microgravity on i) the achievement of goal-directed arm movements and ii) the quadrupedal non-human primate locomotion. A reaching movement in weightlessness would require less muscle contraction since there is no need to oppose gravity. Consequently the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the monkey forelimb muscles should be changed during or after spaceflight. EMG activity of the biceps and triceps muscles during goal-directed arm movements were studied in Rhesus monkeys before, during and after 14 days of spaceflight and flight simulation at normal gravity. The EMG activity was also recorded during treadmill locomotion before and after spaceflight. When performing arm motor tasks, the delay values of the EMG bursts were unchanged during the flight. On the contrary, mean EMG was significantly decreased during the flight comparatively to the pre- and post-flight values, which were very similar. Compared with flight animals, the control ground monkey showed no change in the burst durations and mean EMG. After spaceflight, quadrupedal locomotion was modified. The animals had some difficulty in moving, and abnormal steps were numerous. The integrated area of triceps bursts was increased for the stance phase during locomotion. Taken together these data showed that spaceflight induces a dual adaptative process: first, the discharge of the motor pools of the forelimb musculature was modified during exposure to microgravity, and then upon return to Earth, monkeys changed their new motor strategy and re-adapt to normal gravity.  相似文献

The patterns of EMG activity in the biceps and triceps muscles were recorded during horizontal oscillatory movements of the forearm. Subjects showed increased frequency of oscillation as they voluntarily reduced movement amplitude. EMG burst duration was significantly correlated with wavelength of oscillation in every case. In almost half the cases burst intensity was also positively correlated with wavelength. Subjects seemed to be using one or both these methods to control amplitude. A model was developed in three stages which satisfactorily accounted for the data.  相似文献

The effect of repeated maximal effort isotonic contractions on electromechanical delay was studied. Over 4 days, 17 male subjects performed 400 rapid elbow flexion trials. The kinematics and surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of the biceps brachii of these subjects were recorded. The period from the onset of the EMG until the beginning of movement was defined as the electromechanical delay. The period from the beginning of movement until the end of the EMG was defined as the second component of the contraction. Over the 4 day period there was an increase in the speed of limb movement. The mean power frequency and the duration of the EMG during the electromechanical delay did not change, while the root-mean-square amplitude increased. The duration of the EMG during the second component of the contraction remained stable. The mean power frequency and the root-mean-square amplitude of the EMG during the second component of the contraction increased with the speed of limb movement. We conclude that the faster contractions were a result of changes in motor unit recruitment during the second component of the contraction, rather than in the electromechanical delay.  相似文献

Relations between the kinematic parameters of slow (non-ballistic) targeted extension movements in the elbow joint of humans and characteristics of the movement-related EMG activity in the two heads of the m. triceps brachii were analyzed. Test movements were performed under conditions of application of non-inertional external loadings directed toward flexion. It was shown that the movement-related EMG activity of the elbow extensors, similarly to what was observed in the flexors at flexion movements with the same parameters, demonstrates a complex structure and includes dynamic and stationary phases. In the former phase, in turn, initial and main components can be differentiated. The rising edge and decay of the main component of the dynamic extensor EMG phase could be approximated by exponential functions; this component was never split into a few subcomponents. Dependences between the amplitudes of m. triceps brachii EMG phases and the amplitude of the movement (or external loading) were, as a rule, nonlinear but monotonic. An increase in the test movement velocity led to an increase in the rate of rise of the rising edge of the dynamic EMG phase, while an increment in the amplitude was less significant. Under the used test conditions, the activity of the elbow extensors was usually accompanied by some coactivation of the antagonists (m. biceps brachii). It is concluded that motor commands coming to the elbow extensors at performance of the extension test movements differ from motor commands to the flexors at analogous flexion test movements by a simpler structure and more tonic pattern. Biomechanical specificities of fixation of the mentioned muscle groups to the arm bones (stability of the moment for application of the extensor force under conditions of changing the joint angle vs variable moment of the flexor force) are considered one of the main reasons for such specificity of the patterns of the extensor and flexor motor commands.  相似文献

The muscle pronator teres was studied by surface electromyography during elbow flexion in a horizontal plane. The forearm was in semi-pronation and movement was performed at various velocities. A quantitative comparison was made between pronator teres activity and two main elbow flexors, biceps brachii and brachioradialis. The mean timing of the onset of activity was constant: biceps brachii was activated first followed by pronator teres and brachioradialis, and the lower the velocity of flexion, the earlier was the onset of biceps brachii activity. There was a linear relationship between the integrated EMG from each muscle and the work done. However, this relationship was less exact for pronator teres and brachioradialis at low values of work, a finding which opens questions about the generality of this relationship and about the "muscle equivalent" concept. Pronator teres appears to participate in elbow flexion besides its role in pronation. Despite similar anatomical peculiarities, pronator teres does not behave in the same way as anconaeus or popliteus and, above all, it is not the sole muscle active in slow movement. Thus, all the stocky muscles lying close to an articulation do not behave in the same way.  相似文献

Pain changes movement but most studies have focused on basic physiological adaptations during non-functional movement tasks. The existing studies on how pain affects lower extremity gross movement biomechanics have primarily involved movements in which the quadriceps is the primary muscle and little attention has been given to how pain in other muscles affects functional movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the gait patterns of healthy subjects that occur during experimental muscle pain in the biceps femoris.In a cross-over study design, 14 healthy volunteers underwent EMG assisted 3D gait analyses before, during and after experimental biceps femoris pain induced by intramuscular injections of hypertonic saline. Isotonic saline injections were administered as a non-painful control.The experimental biceps femoris pain led to reductions in hip extensor moments, knee flexor and lateral rotator moments. No changes in lower extremity kinematics and EMG activity in any of the recorded muscles were observed.It is concluded that experimental muscle pain in the biceps femoris leads to changes in the gait pattern in agreement with unloading of the painful muscle. The changes are specific to the painful muscle. The present study provides support to the theory that musculoskeletal pain is a protective signal leading to changes in movement patterns that serve to unload the painful tissue.  相似文献

The effects of long-term fatigue upon maximal force and peak rate of tension development (PRTD) (dF/dt max) are studied in man (elbow flexors), in the rat (pseudo-isolated gastrocnemius muscle) and in the frog (isolated sartorius muscle). The muscles are fatigued by voluntary anisometric anisotonic contractions against an elastic resistance in man, and by maximal tetanic contractions in the frog and the rat. In man, the excitation level of the muscle is controlled by the integrated surface EMG of the biceps brachii. In the animals, the muscles are stimulated by a neurostimulator. The PRTD and the maximal isometric force are measured during fatigue tests. In man, frog and rat, the maximal voluntary isometric torque or the maximal force and the PRTD decrease initially more or less rapidly according to the power developed during the fatigue process, and then less rapidly. The relationship between PRTD and maximal force is linear in the animals and curvilinear in man. The variations of maximal force and PRTD are discussed in relation to the level of excitation of the muscles and of the composition in different motor units types and their spatio-temporal recruitment. From a biomechanical point of view, it seems necessary to study the behavior of the series elastic component during the evolution of long term fatigue.  相似文献

Knee flexion is a movement that initiates rising from a sitting position, which is a common therapeutic exercise for patients unable to ambulate. We investigated how voluntary isometric biceps femoris contraction affects motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude following transcranial magnetic stimulation, background electromyographic (EMG) amplitude, and H-reflex amplitude in ipsilateral leg muscles. Subjects were seated on the edge of a bed with their hips and knees flexed at 90°, and the soles of their feet on the floor. MEP and background EMG were recorded from the tibialis anterior (TA) and soleus (SOL), and H reflexes from SOL of 30 volunteers. Background EMG and MEP also were recorded while voluntarily contracting tested muscles. Biceps femoris contraction increased MEP and background EMG for TA and SOL ( p < 0.01). Maximal background EMG and MEP increased with increasing voluntary contraction of tested muscles ( p < 0.005). Regression slope differed little between TA and SOL. Biceps femoris contraction facilitated MEP comparably for TA and SOL, while SOL background EMG exceeded that of TA ( p < 0.02). The relationship between MEP facilitation and background EMG changed to favor more efficient facilitation in TA ( p < 0.05), but not SOL ( p > 0.1). MEP recorded from TA and SOL with subthreshold stimuli using needle electrodes were more frequent with biceps femoris contraction ( p < 0.04). H-reflex amplitude of SOL decreased during biceps femoris contraction ( p < 0.001). We concluded that biceps femoris contraction affects leg muscle MEP, background EMG, and H reflexes differently.  相似文献

Propulsion in swimming is achieved by complex sculling movements with elbow quasi-fixed on the antero-posterior axis to transmit forces from the hand and the forearm to the body. The purpose of this study was to investigate how elbow muscle coactivation was influenced by the front crawl stroke phases. Ten international level male swimmers performed a 200-m front crawl race-pace bout. Sagittal views were digitized frame by frame to determine the stroke phases (aquatic elbow flexion and extension, aerial elbow flexion and extension). Surface electromyograms (EMG) of the right biceps brachii and triceps brachii were recorded and processed using the integrated EMG to calculate a coactivation index (CI) for each phase. A significant effect of the phases on the CI was revealed with highest levels of coactivation during the aquatic elbow flexion and the aerial elbow extension. Swimmers stabilize the elbow joint to overcome drag during the aquatic phase, and act as a brake at the end of the recovery to replace the arm for the next stroke. The CI can provide insight into the magnitude of mechanical constraints supported by a given joint, in particular during a complex movement.  相似文献

The shoulder muscles are highly solicited in pole vaulting and may afford energy gain. The objective of this study was to determine the bilateral muscle activity of the upper-limbs to explain the actions performed by the vaulter to bend the pole and store elastic energy. Seven experienced athletes performed 5-10 vaults which were recorded using two video cameras (50Hz). The mechanical energy of the centre of gravity (CG) was computed, while surface electromyographic (EMG) profiles were recorded from 5 muscles bilateral: deltoideus, infraspinatus, biceps brachii, triceps, and latissimus dorsi muscles. The level of intensity from EMG profile was retained in four sub phases between take-off (TO1) and complete pole straightening (PS). The athletes had a mean mechanical energy gain of 22% throughout the pole vault, while the intensities of deltoideus, biceps brachii, and latissimus dorsi muscles were sub phases-dependent (p<0.05). Stabilizing the glenohumeral joint (increase of deltoideus and biceps brachii activity) and applying a pole bending torque (increase of latissimus dorsi activity) required specific muscle activation. The gain in mechanical energy of the vaulter could be linked to an increase in muscle activation, especially from latissimusdorsi muscles.  相似文献

The present work aimed at investigating the effects of mechanically amplified tremor on cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) in the alpha band. The study of CMC in this specific band is of particular interest because this coherence is usually absent in healthy individuals and it is an aberrant feature in patients affected by pathological tremors; understanding its mechanisms is therefore important. Thirteen healthy volunteers (23±4 years) performed elbow flexor sustained contractions both against a spring load and in isometric conditions at 20% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC). Spring stiffness was selected to induce instability in the stretch reflex servo loop. 64 EEG channels, surface EMG from the biceps brachii muscle and force were simultaneously recorded. Contractions against the spring resulted in greater fluctuations of the force signal and EMG amplitude compared to isometric conditions (p<.05). During isometric contractions CMC was systematically found in the beta band and sporadically observed in the alpha band. However, during the contractions against the spring load, CMC in the alpha band was observed in 12 out of 13 volunteers. Partial directed coherence (PDC) revealed an increased information flow in the EMG to EEG direction in the alpha band (p<.05). Therefore, coherence in the alpha band between the sensory-motor cortex and the biceps brachii muscle can be systematically induced in healthy individuals by mechanically amplifying tremor. The increased information flow in the EMG to EEG direction may reflect enhanced afferent activity from the muscle spindles. These results may contribute to the understanding of the presence of alpha band CMC in tremor related pathologies by suggesting that the origin of this phenomenon may not only be at cortical level but may also be affected by spinal circuit loops.  相似文献

This study quantified the interaction of electromyography (EMG) obtained from the vastus lateralis and metabolic energy cost of running (C(r); mL·[mass+load](-1)·meter(-1)), an index of running economy, during submaximal treadmill running. Experiments were conducted with and without load on the back on a motor-driven treadmill on the downhill, level and uphill slopes. The obtained EMG was full-wave rectified and integrated (iEMG). The iEMG was divided into eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) phases with a foot sensor and a knee-joint goniometer. The ratio of ECC to CON (ECC/CON ratio) was regarded as the muscle elastic capacity during running on each slope. The C(r) was determined as the ratio of the 2-min steady-state VO(2) to the running speed. We found a significant decrease in the C(r) when carrying the load at all slopes. The ECC/CON ratio was significantly higher in the load condition at the downhill and level slopes, but not at the uphill slope. A significant gradient difference was observed in the C(r) (downuphill). Thus, an alteration of Cr by the gradient and load was almost consistent with that of the ECC/CON ratio. The ECC/CON ratio, but not the rotative torque (T) functioning around the center of body mass, significantly correlated with C(r) (r=-0.41, p<0.05). These results indicated that the ECC/CON ratio, rather than T, contributed to one of the energy-saving mechanisms during running with load.  相似文献

The present study investigated the influence of mechanical constraints (load and movement velocity) on the movement accuracy during a reciprocal aiming precision task. Seven participants had to point rhythmically and alternatively (with flexion–extension of the right elbow) a cursor at two targets as accurately as possible. Two loads (applied to the limb effectors; 500 and 2500 g), two movement frequencies (1.25 and 1.75 Hz) as well as two target sizes (1 and 5 cm) were manipulated. Surface EMG activity of both biceps brachii and triceps brachii was recorded. Attentional demands, reflecting the central cost associated with the performance of aiming movements was assessed using a dual-task paradigm (via a probe reaction time task – RT). While the results demonstrated a significant degradation of pointing accuracy with mechanical loading (mean absolute error – AE for 500 g load: 0.32 mm ± 0.64; mean AE for 2500 g load: 0.51 ± 0.74 mm), no significant effect of movement frequency was found. For the two mechanical constraints, the mental effort to meet the task demands remained the same (mean RT−500g: 370 ± 123 ms; mean RT−2500g: 395 ± 119 ms). Electromyographic activity of both biceps brachii and triceps brachii muscles evidenced neural adaptations to changes in mechanical constraints. Put together, the present findings suggest that the cause of the observed loss of movement accuracy may probably result from more peripheral alterations such as an impairment of the afferent information processing.  相似文献
