Acipenseriformes occupy a special place in the history of ideas concerning fish evolution, but in many respects, phylogenetic studies of the group remain in their infancy. Even such basic questions as the monophyly of Acipenser (the largest genus) are unanswered. We define relationships based on comparative osteology, which allows us to incorporate well-preserved fossils into analyses. Acipenseriformes has existed at least since the Lower Jurassic (approximately 200 MYBP), and all fossil and recent taxa are from the Holarctic. Phylogenetic relationships among Paleozoic and Early Mesozoic actinopterygians are problematic, but most workers agree that Acipenseriformes is monophyletic and derived from some component of paleonisciform fishes. (Paleonisciformes is a grade of primitive non-neopterygian actinopterygians, sensu Gardiner 1993.) Taxa discussed in comparison here are: Cheirolepis, Polypterus, Mimia, Moythomasia, Birgeria, Saurichthys, Lepisosteus and Amia. We review generic diversity within the four nominal families of fossil and recent Acipenseriformes (Chondrosteidae, Peipiaosteidae, Polyodontidae, and Acipenseridae), and provide a cladogram summarizing osteological characters for those four groups. Monophyly of the two extant families is well-supported, but there are no comprehensive studies of all of the known species and specimens of Chondrosteidae and Peipiaosteidae. As a result, sister-group relationships among Chondrosteidae, Peipiaosteidae, and Acipenseroidei (= Polyodontidae + Acipenseridae) are unresolved. We discuss five features fundamental to the biology of acipenseriforms that benefit from the availability of our new phylogenetic hypothesis: (1) specializations of jaws and operculum relevant to jaw protrusion, feeding, and ram ventilation; (2) anadromy or potamodromy and demersal spawning; (3) paedomorphosis and evolution of the group; (4) the bioégeography of Asian and North American polyodontids and scaphirhynchines; and (5) the great abundance of electroreceptive organs in the rostral and opercular regions. Finally, we summarize our nomenclatural recommendations.  相似文献

Myocardial apoptosis is primarily triggered during reperfusion (R). The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that R-induced apoptosis develops progressively during the late phase of R, and that R-induced apoptosis is associated with changes in expression of anti- and pro-apoptotic proteins and infiltrated inflammatory cells. Thirty-one dogs were subjected to 60 min of left anterior descending coronary occlusion followed by 6, 24, 48, and 72 h R, respectively. There was no group difference in collateral blood flow, measured by colored microspheres during ischemia. Necrotic cell death (TTC staining) was significantly increased during R, starting at 27 ± 2% at 6 h R and increasing to 41 ± 2% at 24 h R. There was no further change at 48 (37 ± 3%) and 72 (36 ± 6%) h R, respectively. TUNEL positive cells (% total normal nuclei) in the peri-necrotic zone progressively increased from 6 (26 ± 2*) to 24 (38 ± 1*), 48 (48 ± 3*) and 72 (59 ± 4*) h R, respectively. The number of detected TUNEL positive cells at these time points was consistent with an increased intensity of DNA ladders, identified by agarose gel electrophoresis. Compared with normal tissue, western blot analysis showed persistent reduction in expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 from 6 (16 ± 0.8%*) to 72 h R (78 ± 2%*), and increase in expression of pro-apoptotic proteins including Bax from 6 (30 ± 3%*) to 72 h R (66 ± 3%*), and p53 from 6 (12 ± 1%*) to 72 h R (91 ± 2%*), respectively. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that infiltrated neutrophils (mm2 myocardium) were significantly correlated with development of necrotic and apoptotic cell death from 6 to 24 h R, respectively (P < 0.05), while large macrophage infiltration seen during 48 to 72 h R were correlated with apoptotic cell death (P < 0.05). These results indicate that 1) necrosis peaked at 24 h R when apoptosis was still progressively developing during later R; 2) changes in Bcl-2 family and p53 proteins may participate in R-induced myocardial apoptosis; 3) inflammatory cells may play a role in triggering cell death during R. * P < 0.05 vs. normal nuclei and tissue; P < 0.01 vs. 6 h R.  相似文献

In wheat, corn and sorghum grains twenty-six genera and seventy-seven species including sixteen ofAspergillus and twenty-one ofPenicillium were identified.In grain samples adjusted to various moisture levels (up to 18.8 % on a dry-weight basis) and stored for 4 months at 8, 20 and 30 C seed-borne fungi were monthly identified and counted, and the germinability of the grains was tested. In the control samples (moisture content 7.1–8.2 %) temperature had no effect on the fungal counts and on the precentage germination. With the rise of temperature and moisture content the fungal counts markedly increased and the germinability declined.The list of fungi dominant in one or more of the experiments, included eight species ofAspergillus, six ofPenicillium, two ofFusarium and one each ofAlternaria andCurvularia. The order of dominance of these fungi varied according to the type of grain, the length of storage and the treatment.A. niger was the dominant organism in the control samples of the three grains. It could grow successfully at high moisture contents but above 15 %, it was usually overgrown by other fungi. In wheatP. citrinum andA. sydowii, in cornP. citrinum andA. terreus, and in sorghumA. terreus andA. niger were the dominant fungi at moisture contents above 15 % after four months storage at 30 C. When stored at 8 CPenicillium species tended to predominate over other fungi in grains with high moisture contents.In surface-sterilized grains adjusted to 15 % moisture content, inoculated with six dominant fungi separately and incubated at 30 C,A. niger, P. citrinum andP. variabile caused severe deterioration in the three grains;A. ochraceus in wheat only andF. moniliforme in wheat and corn;C. spicifer was slightly injurious to the three grains.  相似文献

Measurements were made of net rates of CO2 assimilation in lichens at various ambient concentrations of CO2 in air and in helox (79% He, 21% O2). Because of the faster rate of CO2 diffusion in the pores of lichen thalli when filled with helox than when filled with air, a given net rate of assimilation was achieved at a lower ambient concentration of CO2 in helox. The differences were used to estimate resistances to diffusion through the gas-filled pore systems in lichens. The technique was first tested with five lichen species, and then applied in a detailed study with Ramalina maciformis, in which gas-phase resistances were determined in samples at four different states of hydration and with two irradiances. By assuming, on the basis of previous evidence, that the phycobiont in R. maciformis is fully turgid and photosynthetically competent at the smallest hydration imposed (equilibration with vapour at 97% relative humidity), and that, with this state of hydration, diffusion of CO2 to the phycobiont takes place through continuously gas-filled pores, it was possible also to determine both the dependence of net rate of assimilation in the phycobiont on local concentration of CO2 in the algal layer, and, with the wetter samples, the extents to which diffusion of CO2 to the phycobiont was impeded by water films. In equilibrium with air of 97% relative humidity, the thallus water content being 0.5 g per g dry weight, the resistance to CO2 diffusion through the thallus was about twice as large as the resistance to CO2 uptake within the phycobiont. Total resistance to diffusion increased rapidly with increase in hydration. At a water content of 2 g per g it was about 50 times as great as the resistance to uptake within the phycobiont and more than two-thirds of it was attributable to impedance of transfer by water. The influences of water content on rate of assimilation at various irradiances are discussed. Summary Germination of fruits of Lactuca sativa L. cv. Arctic King showed a sharp upper temperature maximum at 31±1.0°C on an agar substrate in light. In a series of 60 tests carried out over 2 years, above, below and in the region of this maximum it was demonstrated that variability of germination counts was greater in the transition zone around this maximum. This is important when single controlled temperatures are chosen to compare effects of chemical or physical stresses on germination, where the stress causes the transition zone to shift and introduces a factor of greater variability into the results.  相似文献

Summary In Brewbaker and Kwack's medium (BK) only 16% of the pollen grains germinated, and these produced pollen tubes having a maximum length of 25 m. With a solution based on Monnier's medium 47% germination and 160-mlong pollen tubes were observed. Calcium was shown to be essential for germination; the optimal concentration was 880 mg/l calcium chloride. The optimal concentrations of magnesium sulphate and boric acid were 360 and 50 mg/l, respectively. Germination at pH 4.0 but also pH 8.0 and the presence of vitamins B1 and B6 (1 mg/l each) were stimulatory. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was superior to sucrose as an osmoticum and germination and tube length were significantly improved using PEG 4000 at a concentration of 120 g/l (0.03 M). Equimolar concentrations of PEG 400 and PEG 600 gave inferior results. Combining PEG with sucrose in the medium did not improve germination or increase tube length.  相似文献

The foundation of the symbolic tradition in medical anthropology is the examination of a patient's experience of a category of illness. The interpretation of folk explanations of etiology and nosology provides insight into the cultural definition of what constitutes an illness, how and why an illness is labeled, and how the afflicted individual should be treated. Further, the analysis of sociocultural meaning emerges as a critical theoretical contribution to our understanding of health and culture.Allen Young in his article Some Implications of Medical Beliefs and Practices for Social Anthropology suggests ... that if we want to learn the social meaning of sickness, we must understand that signs, whatever their genesis, become symptoms because they are expressed, elicited, and perceived in socially acquired ways (1976: 14). He further states that some categories of sickness are particularly interesting in that they enable people to organize the illness event into an episode that has form and meaning (1976: 19–20). Nervios is an example of a symptom that has acquired a special sociocultural pattern of expression, elicitation and perception in San José, Costa Rica. The empirical study of symptom presentation in general medicine and psychiatric outpatient clinics describes the patients who present the symptom and their associated attributes and explanations of the symptom's occurrence. The meaning of nervios is then discussed within a social interactional and symbolic framework.  相似文献

Summary In pot experiments with oats on a sandy soil deficient in managanese and with an extremely low content of reducible managanese, the effect of 0.125 g reducible managanese in two pyrolusite fertilizers (-managanese dioxides) made in 1938 and 1955, respectively, was compared with the effect of 0.125 g water-soluble managanese as managanese sulphate.On soil to which no ferrous sulphate was added, the response to manganese added as Pyrolusite 1938 and Pyrolusite 1955 was of the same magnitude, but slightly less than the response to managanese added as managanese sulphate. The difference between the effect of pyrolusite and that of managanese sulphate was not, however, statistically significant.On soil to which ferrous sulphate had been added, a response was obtained to Pyrolusite 1938 twice as high, and to Pyrolusite 1955 three times as high as the response to manganese sulphate. These results support the suggestion2 that the manganese effect of ferrous sulphate is due to its ability to reduce higher managanese oxides in the soil.Since soil dressed with ferrous sulphate gave a response to added Pyrolusite 1955 which was about 50 per cent higher than the response to Pyrolusite 1938, and since, furthermore, the same amount of reducible manganese and the same number of manganese atoms on the surface of the two fertilizers were involved, it is probable that the difference between the effects of the two pyrolusite fertilizers found under these circumstances is due to difference in their crystallinity.  相似文献

The effects of N-(2,4-dimethyl-5-(((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)amino)phenyl)acetamide (mefluidide) and 3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid (dicamba) on in vitro growth and somatic embryogenesis ofDactylis glomerata L. (orchard grass) were studied using suspension cultures and explanted leaf bases. All experiments employed modified Schenk and Hildebrandt medium amended with concentrations of dicamba ranging from 15 to 120 M (SH-15 to SH-120) and of mefluidide ranging from 1 to 100 M. SH medium without either growth regulator was used for embryo germination. Embyro production in suspension cultures with SH-30 medium plus 3 g/L casein hydrolysate was significantly reduced by 1 M mefluidide. Only 15% of these embryos germinated and produced plants compared to 84% from controls. Growth, as measured by dry weight, was significantly reduced by 50 or 100 M mefluidide. The number of embryos formed on leaf sections was significantly reduced by 20 or 25 M mefluidide. Embryos that formed with 10 M or more mefluidide were callused on both SH-15 and SH-30 media. Shoot formation was inhibited from individual embryos and embryo/callus masses that developed on either SH-15 or SH-30 medium containing 5 M or more mefluidide. Radicle emergence was significantly reduced with 10 M mefluidide regardless of 15 or 30 M dicamba. Histological examination revealed that mefluidide inhibited both shoot and root meristem development with shoot development being the more sensitive. Inhibition of both was independent of dicamba concentrations. Shoot formation was also reduced from embryos that had developed on SH-30 medium without mefluidide when transferred to medium containing mefluidide without dicamba.  相似文献

Summary Phytochrome photoconversions PrPfr and PfrPr can be measured by differential spectrophotometry in dry seeds (6% water content) of Pinus nigra Arn. A red light irradiation given before imbibition induces germination when the seeds are subsequently wetted and kept in darkness.In continuous darkness the phytochrome content shows a drastic increase at the beginning of moistening.The detectable pigment is entirely in the Pr form. The normal PfrPr dark reversion is observed. Pfr destruction does not take place.  相似文献

Maximum inhibition of Glycine max, cv. Essex seed germination occurred at 10 g/ml following 72 hr imbibition in constant light. Seeds imbided 108 hr in constant darkness at this concentration showed a 20% rise in germination over that of the control. Imbibition of G. max, cv. Williams seeds in either light or dark for 96 hr did not suppress germination. Imbibition of Essex seeds in either light or dark at 2.5 through 10 g/ml stimulated root elongation except for 10 g/ml at 96 hr (light). Maximum inhibition of Williams root elongation under constant light was at 48 and 72 hr with 10 g/ml. Statistically significant differences in cotyledon, leaf and stem lengths between non-treated (NT) and treated (T) seedlings were not found except for Williams stem length at 2.5 / ml. Root elongation was stimulated 1.2- and 1.1-folds, respectively, at 5.0 (Essex) and 2.5 (Williams) g/ml. Toxin at 2.5 through 10.0 g/ml did not markedly alter either cotyledon or leaf widths with the exception of Williams leaf width at 2.5 g/ml. Medium supplementation with 2.5 through 10.0 g/ml resulted in cotyledon, leaf and root weight enhancements for Essex seedlings. Stem weight was not markedly affected. An 18% rise in Williams cotyledon weight above that of the control was seen at 2.5 g/ml. Williams leaf weights were increased 1.75- and 1.25-folds, respectively, at 2.5 and 10.0 g/ml. Aflatoxin B1, at 2.5 g/ml promoted Williams stem and root elongation 1.20- and 1.09-folds, respectively. Most of the radioactivity from 65Zn-ZnCl2 recovered within organs was found within Essex roots for both T and NT seedlings. A higher amount of radioactivity was recovered within roots at each toxin concentration than was without toxin. However, this was not statistically significant. Significant differences in the distribution of radioactivity within roots between NT and T Williams seedlings were not observed. Generally, AFB1 failed to affect significantly these two varieties of soybeans based on the tests relating to germination, growth and radiolabel uptake.  相似文献

Summary The ability of gibberellic acid (GA3) to prevent the light inhibition of stem elongation in peas was examined for several varieties under a wide range of irradiation conditions.A saturating dose of GA3 largely prevented the inhibitory effect of red light on total stem height in Duke of Albany (tall), Alaska (medium) and Meteor (dwarf) although a small, but statistically significant, effect persisted in all varieties after 3 days of light. The growth of the second internode was, however, markedly inhibited by red light even with a saturating dose of GA3. With gibberellin there was no difference between the effects of continuous red light and 15 minutes per day on height but the second internode was much shorter in the former treatment. The number of internodes present was the same in both cases and, therefore, the upper internodes in continuous light were as long or longer than in the 15-minute treatment. The number of internodes was only slightly fewer in darkness than in light so that, with GA3, the effect of red light was transient and only the growth of the lower internodes was inhibited. Without GA3 overall height was less in both red light treatments than in darkness for all three varieties.In blue light, on the other hand, there was no difference depending on whether height or internode length is considered, and even with a saturating dose of GA3 the growth rate remained depressed in continuous blue light. There was, however, some interaction between blue light and GA3.Red/far-red reversal experiments showed that in the varieties Alska and Duke of Albany the far-red stimulation of elongation persisted in the presence of a saturating dose of GA3 while for the dwarf variety Meteor there was a significant interaction between far-red and GA3.At least a quantitative difference was found between tall and dwarf peas in their response to light. Tall varieties showed a much greater effect of a prolonged exposure to blue and a smaller effect of a short exposure to red than dwarf varieties. Increasing the duration of exposure to red increasingly inhibited the growth of tall varieties. The medium variety Alaska grew to approximately the same height in continuous red and blue light.  相似文献

We studied the effects of short-term (5–10 min) treatment of Nicotiana tabacum L. pollen grains with concanavalin A (ConA) on their activation (changes in the membrane potential and intracellular pH) and germination in vitro. ConA (10–1000 g/ml) induced plasma membrane hyperpolarization in the vegetative cell and enhanced pollen grain germination. These effects depended on ConA concentration and were interrelated: the value of the membrane potential was negatively correlated with the number of pollen grains germinated for 1 h of their incubation (r = –0.96). In addition, ConA (100 g/ml) increased the intracellular pH value by 0.3 unit. All these effects of ConA are determined by its specific interaction with carbohydrate determinants because a competitive sugar methyl--mannopyranoside (0.1 M) completely blocked ConA effects. The data obtained presume that the specific receptors are present on the surface of pollen grains, evidently on their plasma membrane, and their interaction with lectins has a functional significance for pollen grain activation and germination.  相似文献

A successful technique for the initiation and proliferation of shoots from epicotyl tissue of soybean, Glycine max, has been developed and is described. Fertile plants were recovered. Seeds were germinated on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 5 M benzyladenine. Explanted epicotyl sections were induced to form callus and shoots on Schenk and Hildebrandt medium containing 5.2 mM monobasic ammonium phosphate, 74 M 3-aminopyridine, and 20 M kinetin for five weeks. Shoot proliferation was maintained on N6 medium containing 1.75 mM ammonium sulfate, 2.1 nM picloram, and 0.1 M benzyladenine. Shoots rooted on Gamborg's B5 medium without growth regulators. Shoot-forming cultures were maintained for 60 months. Although all varieties tested produced shoots, some variation in numbers of shoots obtained was observed.  相似文献

The substrate specificity of the thermostable phenol sulfotransferase (PST) from primary cultures of brain microvessel endothelial cell monolayers was characterized. Selected catecholamines, catecholamine metabolites, and p-nitrophenol at 5, 50, and 500 M were used as substrates in PST assays of cytosol extracts. Endogenous catecholamines, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine, exhibited no detectable activity as substrates (500 M) compared to 500 M p-nitrophenol as substrate (1.8 pmol/mg/min specific activity) for the PST. In contrast, 500 M of either deaminated or 3-O-methylated metabolites of catecholamines exhibited intermediate (1.0 pmol/mg/min specific activity) to low (0.2 pmol/mg/min specific activity) activity, respectively, as substrates compared to p-nitrophenol as substrate for the PST. Additionally, 500 M of metabolites of catecholamines that were both deaminated and 3-0-methylated exhibited high activity (>3.0 pmol/mg/min specific activity) as substrates compared top-nitrophenol as substrate for the PST. Qualitatively similar results were observed at lower substrate concentrations. Therefore, results from this study suggest a potential role for PST as part of the enzymatic blood-brain barrier in regulating transendothelial passage of endogenous catecholamines between the blood and the brain.  相似文献

This work examined the performance of a sequencing batch reactor treating dyeing effluents from a factory that processes mainly wool and wool/polyester blends. Different operational conditions were evaluated, namely the influence of the anaerobic and the subsequent aerobic phase on the organic load removal, as well as the effect of the length of the aeration period (from 8 to 12h) on process efficiency. A comparison between a fill stage in fast and slow modes was carried out. Results indicate that the cycle 2 conditions (fast fill and 12h aeration time) improved the overall efficiency (85±6% soluble COD and 95±4% BOD5 removal yields) with a predominant COD uptake occurring in the aerobic stage. Slow, linear COD removal was observed in the anaerobic phase, in contrast with an exponential COD decrease in the oxic phase. For SS a level under 100mg/l was general achieved in the exit of the reactor. With respect to dye degradation, a noticeable decrease of the absorbance measured in the UV–visible range was observed. This could be explained by the reduction of the azo bonds of some of the present dyes in the anaerobic step, in which ORP values lower than –400mV were attained. Some oxidation of anthraquinone sulphonate dyes and of the aromatic amines resulting from azo bond cleavage could also have been taken place, as well as bioelimination mechanisms such as dye sorption.  相似文献

Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are regarded as a susceptible crop to suboptimal temperatures. In temperate regions, low temperatures reduce establishment of beans when planted early in the growing season. Seeds of 14 cultivars/lines or beans were germinated in petri dishes at a constant 8, 10, 12, or 18°C or at 12 h alternating temperatures of 10/8, 12/8 or 18/8°C. Differences in germination percentages and rates between cultivars/lines were significant, especially at low temperatures. Cultivars/lines that germinated best and quickly at constant 8°C were Volare, Great Northern (G.N.) Tara, G.N. Belneb # 1, G.N. Spinel, and San Cristobal. Germination percent and rate of Pinto-UI-111 and Canadian Wonder increased significantly when temperatures were increased by 2 to 4°C for 12 h per 24 h, compared with a constant 8°C. Whereas, germination of G.N. Belneb # 1 was reduced. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to study the effect of cold treatment on polypeptide patterns of seven cultivars/lines. Seeds were germinated at 18°C constant for 96 h or at 18°C for 48 h followed by 48 h at 2 or 8°C. During cold treatment the synthesis of some polypeptides increased. Volare, G.N. Tara Pinto-UI-111 and Canadian Wonder showed changes in polypeptide patterns, while Alubia-33-1, Michigan 84100 and BAT-1225 showed no changes in polypeptide patterns if compared to the control (96 h at 18°C in the dark). This suggests a likely essential role of these proteins in the development of chilling tolerance.  相似文献

In vitro micropropagation of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi was performed to increase the number of ground cover species able to serve as substitute for members of the Rosaceae susceptible to fire blight. Explants (node segments) excised from plants growing in the greenhouse were established in vitro on a medium containing 10 M -naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and activated charcoal (2 g I-1). Using in vitro grown shoots, two propagation procedures were used:- Culture of nodal fragments with 50 M NAA resulted in the growth of 6 to 7 nodes every 4 weeks, yielding 1 700 almost rootable shoots after 4 subcultures;- Development of axillary shoots obtained with media containing 25 M benzyladenine (BA) and 20 M indoleacetic acid (IAA) yielded almost 500 rootable shoots after 4 subcultures.
