Morphological, anatomical and physiological frond traits of Cheilanthes persica (Bory) Mett. ex Kuhn were studied to analyze its adaptive strategy. Mean frond life span is about 340 d. Mature fronds are characterized by 91 g m-2 areal dry mass (ADM) and 217 g m-2 succulence. The reduction of frond water content in July (dehydration phase) caused a 51 % decrease in frond surface area (SA). Fronds were dry in August (desiccation phase); nevertheless, in September they showed an increased SA (rehydration phase). Chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratio, above 3, and the well developed palisade parenchyma (two layers, total thickness of 103.9 µm) are typical for sun leaves. Chl and carotenoid contents and net photosynthetic rate (PN) increased during frond development until the highest values in April-May (maturity phase). When mean air temperature reached 31.3 °C, stomatal conductance (gs) decreased by 34 % and PN by 33 %. The high pigment contents can dissipate the excess of radiant energy, particularly under unfavourable conditions, when PN is low. Rather high PN was found during the rehydration stage. The pronounced decline of mesophyll activity during the declining phase was confirmed by the lowest PN.  相似文献

Diurnal courses in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (), internal CO2 concentration (ci), and water use efficiency (WUE) were studied as season progressed, in relation to environmental factors in field grown Prunus amygdalus. In sun leaves PN reached maximum between 09:00 to 11:00 h and subsequently declined when high temperature and low humidity occurred. An increase was observed late in the afternoon. A decrease in gs and was found as season progressed in both years of measurements. In periods of high evaporative demand, was very low, however, it did not explain the reductions of PN in all the three periods (spring, early and late summer). Midday depression of PN and gs seemed to be related with leaf temperature (Tl) and high irradiance. Increase in ci and F0 and decrease in Fv/Fm found between 12:00 and 14:00 h corresponded to the decrease in PN. Therefore, a transient modification of photosynthetic machinery might be considered. WUE was negatively correlated with vapour pressure difference of leaf to air, that decreased during the day. The September values, higher than in the previous months, were due to the lower seasonal decreases in PN than in gs.  相似文献

Three-month-old plants of mulberry (Morus alba L. cv. Kanva-2) were subjected to a drought stress by withholding water supply. As the leaf water potential (W) was dropping progressively with the severity of treatment and increasing stress duration, the values of leaf area, dry mass accumulation, total chlorophyll (Chl) content, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) were declined. The photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency significantly decreased only at a severe stress treatment. The intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) remained unaltered during a mild stress, yet it increased under moderate and severe stresses. The Ci/gs ratio reflected the mesophyll efficiency during water stress. Rewatering of the plants led to an almost complete recovery of PN, E, and gs, indicating that a short-term stress brings about reversible effects only.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) leaves to environmental and ontogenetic factors were determined on plants grown in the field under high radiation and high nitrogen fertilization. Response curves showed net photosynthesis to only approach light saturation at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 2200 mol m-2 s-1, with rates of approx. 40 mol CO2 m-2 s-1. A broad temperature optimum was observed between 25° and 35°C, with 50% of the photosynthetic rates remaining even at 47°C. The high rate, the lack of saturation at the equivalent of full sunlight, and the tolerance to high temperature of tomato were unusual in light of the literature on this C3 species. Apparently, acclimation to the field environment of high radiation and hot daytime temperature, coupled with the high nitrogen nutrition, made possible the high photosynthetic performance normally associated with C4 species.Photosynthetic ability of the leaf reached a maximum near the time of its full expansion and declined steadily thereafter, regardless of the time of leaf initiation. Leaf nitrogen content showed a similar decline with leaf ontogeny. Photosynthesis was linearly correlated with nitrogen content, whether the nitrogen variation was due to leaf age or rates of nitrogen fertilization. Internal CO2 concentrations (Ci) of the leaf indicated that stomatal function was well coordinated with photosynthetic capacity as leaf age and fluence rate varied down to a PPFD of 500 mol m-2 s-1. As PPFD decreased further, there was less stomatal control and Ci increased to as high as 320 bar bar-1.Dark respiration was highest for expanding leaves and increased nearly exponentially with temperature. Respiration was also highest for young and expanding fruits, and next highest for fruits just turning pink. Fruit respiration increased approximately linearly with temperature, and was estimated to be an important component of the CO2 flux of the plant near maturity because of the heavy fruit load and low leaf photosynthesis at that time. The results are significant for model simulation of tomato productivity in the field.  相似文献

Optical characteristics, contents of photosynthetic pigments, total soluble sugars, and starch, rates of gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and leaf water relations were analysed in three Vitis vinifera L. cultivars, Tinto Cão (TC), Touriga Nacional (TN), and Tinta Roriz (TR), grown in Mediterranean climate. Chl content was significantly lower in TC than in TN and TR leaves, while the Chl a/b ratio was higher. TR had the lowest net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and contents of soluble sugars and starch than TN and TC. In spite of low Chl content, TC showed the lowest photon absorbance and the highest photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2. TC had the lowest predawn and midday leaf water potential. The capability for osmotic adjustment was similar among cultivars and the calculated modulus of elasticity was higher in TC leaves. The typical lighter green leaves of TC seemed to be an adaptive strategy to high irradiance and air temperature associated to water stress.  相似文献

Mesophyll structure and content of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves of three species of steppe plants, Centaurea scabiosa L., Euphorbia virgata Waldst. et Kit., Helichrysum arenarium (L.) Moench, were investigated in four geographical sites of the Volga region and the Urals located in the forest-steppe and steppe zones. Variations of the studied parameters between geographical points depended both on the species and on the structural organization of the leaf. The highest level of variation was observed for leaf area and pigment content per unit leaf area, the size and the number of chloroplasts in the cell changed to a lesser extent. The leaf thickness, leaf area and mesophyll cell sizes mostly depended on the plant species. C. scabiosa had large leaves (40–50 cm2) with large thickness (280–290 μm) and large mesophyll cells (up to 15000 μm3). The leaves of H. arenarium and E. virgata were ten times smaller and characterized by 1.5 times smaller thickness and 2?3 times smaller cell size. Geographical location and climate of the region affected leaf density, proportion of partial tissue volume, and the ratio of the photosynthetic pigments. In the southern point of Volga region with the highest climate aridity, all studied species were characterized by maximum values of volumetric leaf density (LD), due to the high proportion of sclerenchyma and vascular bundles, and specificity of the mesophyll structure. With the decline in latitude, chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid (Car) contents in leaf area were reduced, the ratio Chl/Car was increased, and the ratio Chl a/b was declined. The reduction of the pigment content in the leaf in all species was associated with a reduction in the amount of Chl per chloroplast, and for C. scabiosa and H. arenarium it was associated also with the reduction of chloroplast amount in the leaf area. In turn, chloroplast number per leaf area and the total cell area (Ames/A) depended on the ratio of the number and size of mesophyll cells inherent to this plant species. At the same time, we found a similar mechanism of spatial organization of leaf restructuring for all studied species—decrease in Ames/A was accompanied by increasing in the proportion of intercellular air spaces in the leaf. It is concluded that variations in structural and functional parameters of the photosynthetic apparatus of steppe plants were associated with plant adaptation to climate features. General direction of the changes of leaf parameters of the studied species with aridity was the increase of LD and the decrease of pigment content per leaf area however the cellular mechanisms of changes in the pigment content and integral parameters of mesophyll were determined by the plant species properties.  相似文献

The changes in photosynthetic activity and composition of pigments induced by changes in temperature were examined in the third leaf of three chilling-tolerant and three chilling-sensitive genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.). The plants were grown under a controlled environment at a photon flux density of 550 mol m-2 s-1, a 12 h photoperiod and at a suboptimal temperature of 14/12 C (day/night) until the full expansion of the third leaf. After this treatment, the chilling-tolerant genotypes, when compared with the sensitive ones, displayed a higher photosynthetic activity, a higher content of chlorophyll (Chl) a+b, a higher Chl a/b ratio, a larger total carotenoid pool size as well as a different carotenoid composition. When temperature was subsequently increased to 24/22 C for 3 d the composition of the pigments changed, but the chilling-sensitive genotypes, while adjusting their lower Chl a/b ratio and their different carotenoid composition, were unable to adjust their lower content of chlorophyll, their smaller total carotenoid pool size or their lower photosynthetic performance. Moreover, while the chilling-tolerant genotypes converted the most part of zeaxanthin to violaxanthin in the xanthophyll cycle, the chilling-sensitive genotypes retained high amounts of zeaxanthin. The changes in pigment composition that occurred over the 3 d at 24/22 °C were largely conserved when the plants were returned to 14/12 °C, but photosynthetic activity decreased and zeaxanthin accumulated again. The results suggest that the capability of the chilling-tolerant genotypes, when compared with the sensitive ones, to retain high amounts of pigments and to form a competent photosynthetic apparatus at low temperature is the basis for their more vigorous growth in cool climates.  相似文献

Namaqualand, a semi-arid winter rainfall region of South Africa, supports an exceptional diversity of geophytic species. The survey focused on gas exchange reactions and chlorophyll a fluorescence in geophytes with different leaf orientation in relation to environmental variability. Although the above ground life cycle of geophytes can be extremely short, unlike desert annuals, they are not characterized by a high photosynthetic CO2 uptake. Maximum CO2 uptake ranged from 4 to 20 mol CO2 m-2 s-1. Temperature optima of photosynthetic CO2 uptake were comparably low and ranged from 12 to 22°C for eleven species tested, with only one species above 19°C. The decrease of CO2 uptake with rising temperatures was associated with a substantial increase of photorespiration. Net photosynthesis was saturated between 500 and 900 mol photons m-2 s-1 while electron transport through PSII was saturated at higher photon flux densities. At light intensities beyond saturation, a high variability of PSII efficiency occurred. It was highest for horizontal leaves and lowest for upright leaves. However, the maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm)remained constant during the course of a day, regardless of leaf orientation. This indicates the absence of photoinhibitory effects and a well protected photosynthetic apparatus. Leaf orientation determined interception of solar radiation and thus leaf temperature which was highest for horizontal leaves. In conclusion, Namaqualand geophytes show photosynthetic characteristics that are well adapted to the mild and generally moist conditions during the growing season.  相似文献

Five cultivars of Prunus amygdalus Batsch (Ferragnes, Ferrastar, Marcona, Garrigues, and Non Pareil) grafted on two different rootstocks (Garrigues and GF677), and two cultivars (Ferraduel and Casa Nova) grafted on GF677, were grown for three years under rainfed conditions in an orchard in northeast Portugal. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), leaf conductance for water vapour (gs), leaf water potential (Ψ), instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE), and internal CO2 concentration (Ci) were measured at three periods of the growing season: spring, summer (June or July) and late summer (September) over two years. Ferraduel, Ferrastar, and Marcona presented the best performance in the periods when environmental conditions were not very hard (May or September). Casa Nova and Non Pareil were well adapted to high air evaporative demand, preventing the increase of leaf temperature (T1). Ferrastar, although having a good performance in May and September, did well adapt to hard climatic conditions in June 1994. In the following year, although it presented the highest T1, the values were not limiting (30.6 ± 2.1 °C), and PN was only decreased from May to July. Marcona was highly dependent on T1, but prevented its increasing. Garrigues showed lower PN in most measurement periods. GF677 frequently induced the highest PN, WUE, and Ψ. PN was mainly dependent on T1, radiation, Ci, month, and year. WUE depended on the same factors. Ψ depended mainly on gs, air temperature, month, and year.  相似文献

The content of chlorophylls (Chls) and carotenoids was studied in the leaves of 42 species of boreal aquatic plants with different degree of submergence (emergent, floating, and submerged) and isopalisade, dorsoventral, and homogenous types of mesophyll structure. Hydrophytes were shown to have a low Chl content (1–2 mg/g fr wt) and low Chls/carotenoids ratio (2.3–3.5) as compared to terrestrial plants. The pigment content per dry wt unit and unit leaf area was dependent on the type of mesophyll structure. It was a consequence of the changes in the parameters of leaf mesophyll structure characterizing the density of photosynthetic elements. In a sequence emergent floating submerged forms, the content of Chls and carotenoids decreased, and the photosynthetic capacity decreased due to a reduction in the chloroplast number per unit leaf area. Adaptation of submerged leaves to low illumination and slow CO2 diffusion changed the functional properties of chloroplasts. An increase in the pigment content in the chloroplasts of submerged leaves (7 × 10–9 mg Chl, 2 × 10–9 mg carotenoids) as compared to emergent and floating leaves was accompanied by a decline in the photosynthetic capacity per Chl comprising 1.6 mg CO2/(mg Chl h) versus 3.9 and 3.8 mg CO2/(mg Chl h) in emergent and floating leaves, respectively.  相似文献

Influence of krummholz mat microclimate on needle physiology and survival   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Microclimate and photosynthesis of krummholz mat growth forms of Picea engelmanii (Parry) and Abies lasiocarpa [Hook.] Nutt. were investigated to determine structural features which may aid survival in alpine environments. The structure of krummholz mats was described in terms of the vertical distribution of leaf area index and leaf area density, which exceeded 50 m-1 (based on total leaf surface area) near the canopy surface and approached zero below 30 cm from the surface in both species. Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD, 0.4–0.7 m wavelengths) and wind decreased by an average of 6 and 50-fold, respectively, between 1 m above and 10 cm below mat surfaces in both species. Needle temperatures on a P. engelmannii krummholz mat during July averaged about 2°C above air temperature during the day, with a maximum overtemperature of greater than 20°C above T air during one sunlit period. At night, needle temperatures averaged 3–4°C below T air.Net photosynthesis in year-old P. engelmannii shoots reached a maximum at 15–20°C during July and August. Surface shoots were light saturated at near 1200 moles m-2s-1 PPFD, and had higher photosynthetic rates than subsurface, predominantly shaded shoots above 800 moles m-2s-1. Shade shoots had higher photosynthetic rates when PPFD was below 600 moles m-2s-1, and at 250 moles m-2s-1 shade shoots maintained about 50% of the net photosynthetic rate of sun shoots at light saturation. Shade shoots appeared capable of benefitting photosynthetically from elevated temperatures within krummholz mats despite relatively low light levels. Especially rapid photosynthesis may occur when canopy needles are illuminated by sunflecks and needle temperatures rise by 10° C or more.Snow cover appears crucial for the survival of needles during winter. Snow accumulated within krummholz needle canopies before the sub-canopy zone of unfoliated branches became filled. The concentrated needle growth in the krummholz canopy captured snow in early autumn without support from ground-level snowpack. Early snow cover in both species prevented cuticle abrasion and resulted in high winter needle water contents and viabilities for subsurface compared to surface needles which became abraded, severely dehydrated, and had high mortality between December and February, especially on windward sides of shoots.Extremely high concentrations of needles within krummholz mat canopies created an aerodynamic structure which elevated needle temperatures to more optimal photosynthetic levels in summer and resulted in more efficient snow accumulation in winter. These factors appear crucial for winter needle survival. Thus, krummholz mats appear to be an important adaptation in growth form which provides survival benefits in both summer and winter.  相似文献

In five genotypes of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), the influence of salicylic acid (SA) on photosynthetic activity and biochemical constituents including peroxidase activity at the genotypic level was determined. After SA treatment the total free sugar content increased in IFC 8401 and IGFRI 450 genotypes, whereas the content of total leaf soluble proteins decreased significantly in IFC 902. The high chlorophyll (Chl) (a + b) content in IFC 902 showed a good correlation with the net photosynthetic rate (PN), as in this genotype a significant increase in PN was found after the SA treatment.  相似文献

A suite of functionally-related characters and demography of three species of Neotropical shadeadapted understory shrubs (Psychotria, Rubiaceae) were studied in the field over five years. Plants were growing in large-scale irrigated and control treatments in gaps and shade in old-growth moist forest at Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Irrigation demonstrated that dry-season drought limited stomatal conductance, light saturated photosynthesis, and leaf longevity in all three species. Drought increased mortality of P. furcata. In contrast, irrigation did not affect measures of photosynthetic capacity determined with an oxygen electrode or from photosynthesis-CO2 response curves in the field. Drought stress limited field photosynthesis and leaf and plant survivorship without affecting photosynthetic capacity during late dry season. Leaves grown in high light in naturally occurring treefall gaps had higher photosynthetic capacity, dark respiration and mass per unit area than leaves grown in the shaded understory. P. furcata had the lowest acclimation to high light for all of these characters, and plant mortality was greater in gaps than in shaded understory for this species. The higher photosynthetic capacity of gap-grown leaves was also apparent when photosynthetic capacity was calculated on a leaf mass basis. Acclimation to high light involved repackaging (higher mass per unit leaf area) as well as higher photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf mass in these species. The three species showed two distinct syndromes of functionally-related adaptations to low light. P. limonensis and P. marginata had high leaf longevity (3 years), high plant survivorship, low leaf nitrogen content, and high leaf mass per unit area. In contrast, P. furcata had low leaf survivorship (1 year), high plant mortality (77–96% in 39 months), low leaf mass per unit area, high leaf nitrogen content, and the highest leaf area to total plant mass; the lowest levels of shelf shading, dark respiration and light compensation; and the highest stem diameter growth rates. This suite of characters may permit higher whole-plant carbon gain and high leaf and population turnover in P. furcata. Growth in deep shade can be accomplished through alternative character syndromes, and leaf longevity may not be correlated with photosynthetic capacity in shade adapted plants.

The studied evergreen forest dominated by Quercus ilex showed a leaf area index (LAI) of 4.5, of which 61 % was accumulated within the tree layer, 30 % within the shrub layer, and 9 % within the herb layer. The leaves of all the species were ± horizontally oriented (41°), absorbing a relevant percentage of incident irradiance. The high LAI drastically modified the quality and quantity of solar radiation on the forest underground. The spectral distribution of the radiation under the forest was markedly deficient in blue and red wavelengths. The maximum absorption in these spectral bands was found in spring, when net photosynthetic rate (P N ) was at its maximum, and in summer, when new leaves reached 90 % of their definitive structure. The vertical radiation profile showed an evident reduction of the red-far red ratio (R/FR). Radiation quality and quantity influenced leaf physiology and morphology. Clear differences in leaf size, leaf water content per area (LWC) and specific leaf area (SLA) on the vertical profile of the forest were observed. All the shrub species showed similar SLA (12.02 m2 kg-1, mean value). The ability to increase SLA whilst simultaneously reducing leaf thickness maximized the carbon economy. The high chlorophyll (Chl) content of shrub layer leaves (1.41 g kg-1, mean value) was an expression of shade adaptation. Both leaf morphology and leaf physiology expressed the phenotypic plasticity. Q. ilex, Phillyrea latifolia and Pistacia lentiscus of the forest shrub layer showed wide differences in leaf structure and function with respect to the same species developing under strong irradiance (low maquis): a 57 % mean increase of SLA and a 86 % mean decrease of PN. They showed high leaf plasticity. Leaf plasticity implies that the considered sclerophyllous species has an optimum developmental pattern achieving adaptation to environments. Wild emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccoides Korn) has shown wide genetic diversity for disease resistance and morpho-physiological traits of economic importance. Our objectives were to test for genetic variation (VG) in photosynthetic characteristics residing within and between native populations sampled from three ecogeographical regions of Israel, and to identify potential sources of high photosynthetic efficiency for future wheat improvement. Accessions sampled in the center of wild emmer distribution (upper Jordan Valley) in a relatively narrow geographical range showed the greatest diversity in CO2-assimilation rate per unit leaf area (A) or per unit chlorophyll (A/Chl). Genetic variation was absent for internal CO2 concentration (Ci) and water-use efficiency (WUE) and generally lacking for stomatal conductance (gs). Leaf area, although quite variable, was not a significant cofactor in assessing genetic potential for photosynthesis. Accessions within a given population showed 10-times more variation in A and A/Chl than populations sampled from different locations in a region. Accessions with the highest photosynthetic efficiency were derived from upland steppic populations located in marginal habitats extending southward into Israel. Some accessions having high photosynthetic capacity (A=32 mol m-2 s-1) with no significant reduction in leaf size constitute a potentially valuable genetic resource yet untapped for genetic improvement of hexaploid (T. aestivum L.) wheat.Abbreviations LA total leaf area - VG total genetic variance - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - WUE water-use efficiency  相似文献

Barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Boone) were grown at 20°C with a 16h/8h light/dark cycle of either high (H) intensity (550 mole m-2 s-1) or low (L) intensity (55 mole m-2 s-1) white light. Plants were transferred from high to low (H L) or low to high (L H) light intensity at various times from 4 to 8 d after leaf emergence from the soil. Primary leaves were harvested at the beginning of the photoperiod and a 3 cm apical segment removed for analysis. H control plants had greater chlorophyll (Chl) per leaf area and higher Chl a/b ratios than L controls. Analysis of Chl-protein complexes revealed that H and L plants had the same percentage of total Chl (62–65%) associated with Photosystem II (PS II), but that the organization of Chl within PS II was different. H plants contained lower levels of light-harvesting complex (LHC-II) and higher levels of the PS II complex CPa compared with L plants. Leaf Chl content and Chl organization within PS II were sensitive to changes in light intensity. In H L plants, leaf Chl content decreased, Chl a/b ratio decreased, and a redistribution of Chl from CPa to LHC-II occurred during acclimation to low light. Acclimation of L H plants to high light involved an increase in leaf Chl content, an increase in Chl a/b ratio, and a decrease in LHC-II. In contrast, the level of photosystem I related Chl-protein complexes (CP1 + CP1a) was similar in all light treatments. The light acclimation process occurred slowly over a period of 6 to 8 d in H L and L H plants.Abbreviations DMF dimethylformamide - H control plants grown under high light intensity - H L plants transferred from high to low light intensity - L control plants grown under low light intensity - L H plants transferred from low to high light intensity Cooperative investigations of the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, Raleigh, NC. Different pigments often occur together and affect photosynthetic characteristics of the respective leaf portions. In this study, photosynthetic activity in variegated leaves of five cultivars of the ornamental and medicinal plant, Coleus × hybridus hort., was estimated by image analysis and point data measurements of major chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters and related to the amount of photosynthetic pigments measured with a Chl meter or spectrophotometrically in leaf extracts. Significant differences in Chl and carotenoid (Car) contents were noticed among differentially pigmented sectors of a leaf and among the cultivars. Although the higher Chl concentration was noticed in purple parts compared to green parts of the leaves, the values of minimal and maximal fluorescence yield at the dark- and light-adapted state (F0, Fm, F0', Fm', respectively) were a little lower than those in the green sectors, indicating photoprotective effects provided by anthocyanins and Car, more abundant in the red parts. The lowest Chl and Car content was detected in creamy-yellow and pink sectors and this contributed to low F0, Fm, and Fm', maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, and nonphotochemical and photochemical quenching but high PSII maximum efficiency and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry. Both methods of Chl fluorescence analysis revealed heterogeneity in capture, transfer, and dissipation of excitation energy but Chl fluorescence imaging was more suitable in examining very narrow pigmented leaf areas.  相似文献
