Flowering of Pharbitis nil plants was slightly inhibited byexposure to the light of the full moon for 8 or more hours witha single dark period of 16, 14 or 13 h. It is suggested thatin the natural environment moonlight may have at most only aslight delaying effect on the time of flower induction in short-dayplants. Inhibition of flower initiation in light culture of a long-dayduckweed, Lemna gibba G3 by an inserted period of brief darknesschanges its magnitude with the application time of the dark-break.‘Response vs. time of the dark-break’ curve consistsof superimposed thermo-insensitive oscillatory and thermo-sensitivehourglass components. Oscillation is diurnal and damps in afew days. The situation is very similar to what has previouslybeen revealed concerning the non-photosynthetic light-requirementof the same strain of duckweed for frond multiplication. Increasingphotophily for flower production is likely accompanied by decreasingphotophily for frond production, and vice versa. The presenceof iron chelators such as o-phenanthroline and ,'-dipyridylor reduced iron concentration in culture medium abolishes theoscillatory change, without modifying the hourglass change,in either vegetative or reproductive photophily. Ferrous, butnot ferric, ions likely mediate between the basic clock andthe photophily. Critical daylength for flower induction is notaffected by exogenous chelators. Flowering and pollination biology ofChloranthus serratusandChloranthusfortuneiwere studied. Flowering took place from early Marchto mid–April inCh. fortunei, and from April to September,the whole growth period, inCh. serratus.The flowering periodof an inflorescence ofCh. serratusaveraged about 8 d and anthesisof a single flower was 5–6 d. Flowers are slightly protogynous.The flower emitted fragrance when the androecium became white.Both species are entomophilous with thrips as exclusive pollinators.Under natural conditions, fruit set occurs mainly as a resultof cross-pollination, but self-pollination and agamospermy mayoccur in some cases. In flowers ofCh. fortuneiandCh. serratus,theincurved androecium, the carpel and the spike axis form a nearlyclosed chamber that contains the anthers and stigma. The developmentof a floral-axial chamber may be an important step towards amore economical and effective pollination system. Floral morphology,pollination biology and fossil evidence suggest that the mainevolutionary trend in the genusChloranthusis towards developmentof ‘closed’ flowers. Flowering stems are formed under long-day conditions on root explants of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) cultured in vitro while under short days, only vegetative growth is observed. Under short-day conditions (12 h), stem elongation is induced by treating newly formed shoot apices with GA3 (1 l, 10–3M). No flower buds were formed on the GA3-induced stems. Long days seem to be indispensable for the induction of flower buds on the elongated stem.  相似文献

A technique for growing buds, flowers, and pods of oilseed rape(Brassica napus L. cv. Haplona) on stem explants in vitro hasbeen developed. Open flowers and young pods underwent normaldevelopment on a basal medium of minerals, vitamins, and sucrosebut the development of buds was less successful. Young buds(3 mm long) did not develop and only limited development ofthe older buds (5 mm long) took place. Some 3 mm-long buds wereinduced to develop to open flowers by adding naphthyl aceticacid or gibberellic acid. Pod and seed set in open flowers werenot affected by adding plant growth substances to the medium,but pod elongation and pod dry weight were promoted by gibberellicacid, 105 M, and benzyl amino purine, 107 M, respectively. Reducingthe supply of sucrose or minerals to open flowers reduced seedset, pod elongation and pod weight but did not affect pod set.The physiological significance of the results is discussed. Background and Aims The desert legume genus Ammopiptanthuscomprises two currently endangered species, A. mongolicus andA. nanus. Genetic variability and genetic differentiation betweenthe two species and within each species were examined. • Methods Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) marker datawere obtained and analysed with respect to genetic diversity,structure and gene flow. • Key Results Despite the morphological similarity betweenA. mongolicus and A. nanus, the two species are geneticallydistinct from each other, indicated by 63 % species-specificbands. Low genetic variability was detected for both populationlevel (Shannon indices of diversity Hpop = 0·106, percentageof polymorphic loci P = 18·55 % for A. mongolicus; Hpop= 0·070, P = 12·24 % for A. nanus) and specieslevel (Hsp = 0·1832, P = 39·39 % for A. mongolicus;Hsp = 0·1026, P = 25·89 % for A. nanus). Moderategenetic differentiation was found based on different measures(AMOVA ST and Hickory B) in both A. mongolicus (0·3743–0·3744)and A. nanus (0·2162–0·2369). • Conclusions The significant genetic difference betweenthe two species might be due to a possible vicariant evolutionaryevent from a single common ancestor through the fragmentationof their common ancestor's range. Flowering plants of Begonia × cheimantha cv Emma and Begonia x hiemalis cv Schwabenland Red were exposed to different light levels (0, 40, 80 M m–2S–1) and to ethylene (150 nl 1–1) in growth cabinets. Increasing irradiance level increased the number of flower buds in both begonia species. The amount of 14C-assimilates translocated to flower buds and the acid invertase activity in flower buds and flowers also increased with increasing irradiance level. Conversely, treatment with ethylene decreased the accumulation of 14C in flowers and flower buds, but did not affect acid invertase activity. Ethylene accelerated abscission of flowers and flower buds and increased the number of cup shaped and small flowers.  相似文献

传粉昆虫在访花时,通常会表现出对某一类型花的偏爱性。本研究利用人工制作的大小、颜色、形态和气味不同的9种类型的花来研究小峰熊蜂Bombus hypocrita的访花偏爱性。结果表明:当增加花的大小、形态、气味等附加特征数时,小峰熊蜂的偏爱性程度与花朵附加特征数有显著相关性(P<0.01)。当花朵颜色由2种增加到4种,熊蜂对紫色花的偏爱性程度降低,但花朵颜色的种类与小峰熊蜂的访花偏爱性没有相关性(P>0.05),花颜色的种类对熊蜂访紫色花的偏爱性影响不大。大小为5 cm的紫花被访次数(108±9次)明显高于大小为3 cm的紫花被访次数(40±4次)(P<0.01),说明熊蜂明显喜欢访大花瓣的紫花。完全盛开的紫花被访次数(129±13次)显著高于刚绽放的花被访次数(26±3次)(P<0.01),说明熊蜂喜欢访盛开的紫花。柠檬味的紫花被访次数(63±8次)明显低于草莓味的紫色花被访次数(88±2次)(P<0.05),说明熊蜂喜欢访草莓味的花朵。  相似文献

Background and Aims For rare endemics or endangered plantspecies that reproduce both sexually and vegetatively it iscritical to understand the extent of clonality because assessmentof clonal extent and distribution has important ecological andevolutionary consequences with conservation implications. Asurvey was undertaken to understand clonal effects on fine-scalegenetic structure (FSGS) in two populations (one from a disturbedand the other from an undisturbed locality) of Echinosophorakoreensis, an endangered small shrub belonging to a monotypicgenus in central Korea that reproduces both sexually and vegetativelyvia rhizomes. • Methods Using inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) asgenetic markers, the spatial distribution of individuals wasevaluated using Ripley's L(d)-statistics and quantified thespatial scale of clonal spread and spatial distribution of ISSRgenotypes using spatial autocorrelation analysis techniques(join-count statistics and kinship coefficient, Fij) for totalsamples and samples excluding clones. • Key Results A high degree of differentiation betweenpopulations was observed (ST(g) = 0·184, P < 0·001).Ripley's L(d)-statistics revealed a near random distributionof individuals in a disturbed population, whereas significantaggregation of individuals was found in an undisturbed site.The join-count statistics revealed that most clones significantlyaggregate at 6-m interplant distance. The Sp statistic reflectingpatterns of correlograms revealed a strong pattern of FSGS forall four data sets (Sp = 0·072–0·154), butthese patterns were not significantly different from each other.At small interplant distances (2 m), however, jackknifed 95% CIs revealed that the total samples exhibited significantlyhigher Fij values than the same samples excluding clones. • Conclusion The strong FSGS from genets is consistentwith two biological and ecological traits of E. koreensis: bee-pollinationand limited seed dispersal. Furthermore, potential clone matesover repeated generations would contribute to the observed highFij values among genets at short distance. To ensure long-termex situ genetic variability of the endangered E. koreensis,individuals located at distances of 10–12 m should becollected across entire populations of E. koreensis.  相似文献

Adventitious shoots were regenerated from fragmented flowerbuds, individual petals and receptacles in a number of differentcarnation cultivars. The major site of shoot formation was thesubepidermal cells at the proximal end of the petals. The yieldof shoots from a single flower bud was high, ranging between70 and 275, for the 11 cultivars tested. The regeneration mediumcontained Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with4–8 µm -naphthaleneacetic acid and 4–8 µmbenzyladenine. The preferred regeneration protocol appears highlysuited to the development of gene transfer systems. The integration of innate andadaptive immune responses is required for efficient control ofCandida albicans. The present work aimed to assess, at thelocal site of the infection, the immunocompetence of macrophages inrats infected intraperitoneally with C. albicans and exposedsimultaneously to stress during 3 days (CaS group). We studied the1) ability to remove and kill C. albicans,2) tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) release,3) balance of the inducible enzymes NO synthase (iNOS) andarginase, and 4) expression of interleukin (IL)-1 andIL-1 receptor antagonist (ra) mRNA. Compared with only infected animals(Ca group), the number of colony-forming units was significantly higherin CaS rats (P < 0.01), and the macrophagecandidicidal activity was ~2.5-fold lower (P < 0.01). Release of TNF- was diminished in both unstimulated andheat-killed C. albicans restimulated macrophages of the CaSgroup (Ca vs. CaS, P < 0.03 and P < 0.05, respectively). In Ca- and CaS-group rats, the rates for both thearginase activity and the NO synthesis were significantly enhanced.However, the stress exposure downregulated the activity of both enzymes(CaS vs. Ca, P < 0.05). After in vitro restimulation,the IL-1ra/IL-1 ratio was significantly diminished in CaS-group rats(P < 0.05). Our results indicate that a correlationexists between early impairment of macrophage function and stress exposure.

开花时间是植物的重要生活史性状。对模式植物的研究表明: 从感受内外环境信号开始到最终分化形成功能性花器官的过程涉及复杂的信号转导途径和调控网络; 开花时间受多种因子的调控, 而FT基因作为整合途径成分起到非常关键的作用。植物的花期变异在物种、群体和个体水平上具有复杂的自然变异模式, 且不同植物的花期变异随全球环境变化而具有不同的变异趋势。植物个体之间通过传粉进行的基因交流需要功能性开花时间的一致或重叠, 而花期变异会导致群体之间或群体内部亚群体之间的基因流障碍和遗传分化, 并可能导致邻域或同域的物种形成。该文分析了植物花期变异与群体遗传分化的关系, 认为决定开花时间的基因在物种分化中可能起到关键的作用, 而对开花时间自然变异模式的研究对于揭示晚近分化快速辐射物种的进化模式具有重要意义。  相似文献

Flowers of Antirrhinum majus L. were separated and the componentparts analysed for cation exchange capacity (CEC), uronic acid(UA), and mineral composition. The potassium content fell, andboth the calcium content and Ca/K ratio increased in the orderstigma style ovary. These changes in composition in the differentparts of the flower are in keeping with the variation expectedfrom, and found for, their CEC values. Although its primary function is monovalent anion exchange, theband 3 protein also cotransports divalent anions together with protonsat low pH. The putative proton binding site, Glu-681 in humanerythrocyte band 3, is conserved throughout the anion exchanger family(AE family). To determine whether or not the monovalent anion bindingsite is located near Glu-681, we modified this residue with Woodward'sreagent K(N-ethyl-5-phenylisoxazolium-3'-sulfonate; WRK). Measurements ofCl binding by35Cl-NMR show that externalCl binds to band 3 evenwhen Cl transport isinhibited ~95% by WRK modification of Glu-681. This indicates thatthe external Cl bindingsite is not located near Glu-681 and thus presumably is distant fromthe proton binding site. DIDS inhibitsCl binding even when WRK isbound to Glu-681, indicating that the DIDS binding site is also distantfrom Glu-681. Our data suggest that the DIDS site and probably also theexternally facing Cltransport site are located nearer to the external surface of themembrane than Glu-681.

Branch internodes of mature plants and stem internodes of seedlings of Fortunella hindsii flowered in vitro on half-strength MT (Murashige and Tucker 1969) basal medium supplemented with benzyladenine, adenine, 6---dimethylallylaminopurine and kinetin. The highest percentage of flowering was achieved with explants originating from branch internodes of flowering plants close to the apex on half-strength MT basal medium containing 5% sucrose and 0.01 mg 1–1 BA in light. Exposure to darkness for more than 3 weeks followed by re-exposure to light reduced flowering. Flowering required a 4-day exposure to BA, but shoot formation could be initiated even without exposure to BA. First branch internode segments on MT basal medium containing 5% sucrose were prolific in flower (85%) production. The sucrose treatment affected the flower bud size distribution. There were about 13 flower buds per culture in the largest size category (>5 mm).  相似文献

In Petunia hybrida flowers, both pollination and stigma woundinginduced a transient Increase in ethylene production and hastenedcorolla senescence. Ethylene production by different flowerparts was measured in situ using laser photoacoustic (LPA) spectroscopy.In pollinated flowers, ethylene was exclusively produced bythe stigma/style region whereas wounding of the stigma Inducedethylene production both by the stigma/style region and by theremaining flower parts. In aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG)-treatedflowers, subsequent treatment of the unwounded stigma with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylicacid (ACC) induced ethylene production exclusively by the stigma/styleregion whereas treatment of a previously wounded stigma withACC induced a simultaneous increase in ethylene production bythe stigma/style region and the remaining flower parts. Theseresults suggest that following stigma wounding, either ACC orethylene is involved in inter-organ communication. Followingpollination, the signal is apparently not directly related toethylene. In vivo ACC oxidase activity of most flower parts, includingthe gynoecium, was higher in light than in dark. Light or darkdid not influence the relative contributions of stigma/styleand remaining flower parts to the total pollination, woundingor ACC-induced ethylene production, indicating that ACC is nottranslocated. Both in excised styles and intact flowers, radiolabelledACC and its analogue -aminoisobutyric acid (AIB), applied eitherto an intact or wounded stigma, were largely immobile confirmingthat ACC is not likely to play a role in inter-organ signalling. The results collectively suggest that following stigma wounding,translocation of ethylene may be the signal responsible forinitiation of corolla senescence; following pollination thesignal is not directly related to ethylene. Much research has focused on understanding breeding synchronyin animals and its relationship to such issues as mating systemsand extrapair copulations in birds (Birkhead and Biggins, 1987;Emlen and Oring, 1977; Knowlton, 1979; Stutchbury and Morton,1995). To empirically examine synchrony, one needs an appropriatemeasure of the degree of synchrony in a population. A mathematical model was used to represent an idealhomogeneous lung placed within a box with gas flow(box) surrounding the lung. Thealveoli are assumed to be ventilated with room air(A) andperfused at constant flow () containinginert gases (x) with various perfusate-air partition coefficients(p,x).The ratio of transpleural flux of gas(plx)to its total delivery to the lung via pulmonary artery( ),representing fractional losses across the pleura, can be shown todepend on four dimensionless ratios:1)p,x,2) the ratio of alveolar ventilation to perfusion(A/), 3) the ratioof the pleural diffusing capacity(Dplx) to the conductance ofthe alveolar ventilation (Dplx /Ag,where g is the capacitancecoefficient of gas), and 4) theratio of extrapleural (box) ventilation to alveolar ventilation(box/A).Experiments were performed in isolated perfused and ventilated rabbitlungs. The perfusate was a buffer solution containing six dissolvedinert gases covering the entire 105-fold range ofp,x usedin the multiple inert gas elimination technique. Steady-state inert gasconcentrations were measured in the pulmonary arterial perfusate,pulmonary venous effluent, exhaled gas, and box effluent gas. Theexperimental data could be described satisfactorily by thesingle-compartment model. It is concluded that a simple theoreticalmodel is a useful tool for predicting transpleural flux from isolatedlung preparations, with known ventilation and perfusion, for inertgases within a wide range of .

Information in the literature suggests that the process of applebud morphogenesis is controlled by the level of growth substances,notably gibberellins in the bud, and by the availability ofgrowth substrate (S). The spur buds of apples must contain acertain minimum number of nodes (Nm) before flower primordiacan be formed, and the process of bud morphogenesis can be describedby a rate of node production with time, t by the equation It is postulated that the parameter kG is a function of thebalance between the enzymes systems in the bud, the rate ofsynthesis of the enzymes associated with the development offloral bud parts (floral enzymes) being inversely related tothe level of gibberellins (G) in the bud. The parameter kG isa function of the nutritional state of the bud; a is a rateparameter, and i is a conversion factor. Node production rateis asymptotic with increase in S, but switches from high tolow values as G varies about a critical concentration. The implicationsof the model, which appears to describe most observations, arediscussed, and some suggestions for testing it are put forward.  相似文献
