Acid-solubilized collagen (ASC) and pepsin-solubilized collagen (PSC) were extracted from the seaweed pipefish (Syngnathus schlegeli) and partially characterized. The amount of collagens isolated in the subsequent treatments was 5.5% of ASC and 33.2% PSC on the basis of lyophilized pipefish body weight, respectively. According to the electrophoretic pattern and CM-cellulose column chromatogram, the collagens might be classified as type I collagens, containing α1 and α2 chain. The imino acid content of collagen from pipefish was lower than those of mammalian collagens as also were the denaturation temperatures (Td) of collagens were 34.8°C and 35.1°C, respectively. This study shows that there is a possibility to use pipefish collagen as the alternative source of collagen from industrial purposes and subsequently it may evaluate the economical value of the seaweed pipefish.  相似文献

Fecundity selection, acting on traits enhancing reproductive output, is an important determinant of organismal body size. Due to a unique mode of reproduction, mating success and fecundity are positively correlated with body size in both sexes of male-pregnant Syngnathus pipefish. As male pipefish brood eggs on their tail and egg production in females occurs in their ovaries (located in the trunk region), fecundity selection is expected to affect both sexes in this species, and is predicted to act differently on body proportions of males and females during their development. Based on this hypothesis, we investigated sexual size dimorphism in body size allometry and vertebral numbers across populations of the widespread European pipefish Syngnathus typhle. Despite the absence of sex-specific differences in overall and region-specific vertebral counts, male and female pipefish differ significantly in the relative lengths of their trunk and tail regions, consistent with region-specific selection pressures in the two sexes. Male pipefish show significant growth allometry, with disproportionate growth in the brooding tail region relative to the trunk, resulting in increasingly skewed region-specific sexual size dimorphism with increasing body size, a pattern consistent across five study populations. Sex-specific differences in patterns of growth in S. typhle support the hypothesis that fecundity selection can contribute to the evolution of sexual size dimorphism.  相似文献

Gross dissection, light microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to generate a detailed understanding of the ovarian anatomy of the pipefish, Syngnathus scovelli. The ovary is a cylindrical tube bounded by an outer layer consisting of a smooth muscle wall and an inner layer of luminal epithelium, with follicles sandwiched between the two layers. A remarkable feature of this ovary is a sequential pattern of follicle development. This pattern begins at the germinal ridge with a gradient of follicles of increasing developmental age extending to the mature edge. The germinal ridge is an outpocketed region of the luminal epithelium containing early germinal cells and somatic prefollicular cells. Therefore, the germinal ridge and luminal epithelium share the same ovarian compartment and follicle formation occurs within this compartment. The mature edge is defined as the site of oocyte maturation and ovulation. The outer ovarian wall contains unmyelinated nerve fibers throughout. Longitudinally oriented unmyelinated nerves are also observed near the smooth muscle bundles associated with the mature edge. Oocytes near the mature edge are polarized such that the germinal vesicle (nucleus) is generally oriented toward the luminal epithelium. The sandwichlike organization of the ovary results in follicles that have a shared theca. An extensive lymphatic network is also interspersed among the follicles. Thus, the exceptional features of the pipefish ovary make it particularly well suited for the examination of early events in oogenesis. Specifically, we characterize pipefish folliculogenesis in detail.  相似文献

Prior to reproductive maturity male and female worm pipefish Nerophis lumbriciformis are not significantly different in standard length ( L S), eviscerated mass or condition indices. Subsequently, however, mature females achieve significantly ( P  < 0·001) greater values of L S and mass. For egg-bearing males, there was no marked difference in the mass of embryos with increasing development ( P  > 0·1); similarly there was no significant divergence in condition indices calculated for males carrying embryos of increasing development. Post-brooding males, however, had significantly lower values for the hepato-somatic index than either egg-bearing or non-mated male worm pipefish ( P  < 0·001). This study suggests that male worm pipefish invest a significant proportion of their energy budget into the development and maintenance of the brooding patch, to the detriment of increased length or mass.  相似文献

Nilsson's pipefish Syngnathus rostellatus were found on tidal flats in the Dollard (Ems estuary, Wadden Sea) in high numbers in May and June (20 to 150 1000 m-2) and August and September (150 to 300 1000m-2). Low numbers were found in April, July, November and December. Nilsson's pipefish with eggs and larvae in their brood pouch were most numerous in May and August and September. Both the fraction of Nilsson's pipefish with a brood pouch and the fraction of brood pouches with eggs and larvae increased with fish length. Analysis of length-frequency distributions suggests that two cohorts live in the Dollard (spring cohort, April–August; summer cohort, July–December). Reproducing animals were found in both cohorts. It was assumed that the spring cohort was the previous year's summer cohort, which migrate to the tidal flats in spring, reproduced and then disappeared. The summer cohort was their offspring (0 group) which leave the tidal flats during November and December.  相似文献

Syngnathid fish (pipefish and seahorses) are unique among teleost fish in that their ovary consists of a rolled sheet with germinal ridge(s) on the dorsal side running along the entire length of the sheet. A distinct difference is seen in the ovarian structure between polygamous Syngnathus pipefish and monogamous seahorses (Hippocampus spp.), the former having one germinal ridge and the latter with two ridges. This study examined the ovarian structure and the mode of egg production in a monogamous pipefish Corythoichthys haematopterus. The ovary of C. haematopterus had two germinal ridges like that observed in monogamous seahorses. There were two distinct groups of follicles in the ovary, one being a cohort of extremely small follicles and the other a cohort of follicles developing and increasing in size with the passage of time. We suggest that the ovarian structure and the mode of egg production in this pipefish are adaptations to monogamy.  相似文献

Due to the phenomenon of male pregnancy, the fish family Syngnathidae (seahorses and pipefishes) has historically been considered an archetypal example of a group in which sexual selection should act more strongly on females than on males. However, more recent work has called into question the idea that all species with male pregnancy are sex-role reversed with respect to the intensity of sexual selection. Furthermore, no studies have formally quantified the opportunity for sexual selection in any natural breeding assemblage of pipefishes or seahorses in order to demonstrate conclusively that sexual selection acts most strongly on females. Here, we use a DNA-based study of parentage in the Gulf pipefish Syngnathus scovelli in order to show that sexual selection indeed acts more strongly on females than on males in this species. Moreover, the Gulf pipefish exhibits classical polyandry with the greatest asymmetry in reproductive roles (as quantified by variances in mating success) between males and females yet documented in any system. Thus, the intensity of sexual selection on females in pipefish rivals that of any other taxon yet studied.  相似文献

The life‐history traits of two species of pipefish (Syngnathidae) from seagrass meadows in New South Wales, Australia, were examined to understand whether they enhance resilience to habitat degradation. The spotted pipefish Stigmatopora argus and wide‐bodied pipefish Stigmatopora nigra exhibit some of the shortest life spans known for vertebrates (longevity up to 150 days) and rapid maturity (male S. argus 35 days after hatching (DAH) and male S. nigra at 16–19 DAH), key characteristics of opportunistic species. Growth rates of both species were extremely rapid (up to 2 mm day?1), with seasonal and sex differences in growth rate. It is argued that short life spans and high growth rates may be advantageous for these species, which inhabit one of the most threatened marine ecosystems on earth.  相似文献

Hybridization is thought to be an important source of novel genetic variation, and interspecific hybridization may increase the adaptive potential of wild populations. While hybridization has not been previously reported in syngnathid fishes (seahorses and pipefish), the sympatric occurrence of closely related species at high densities increases the probability of interspecies mating in this group. Southern California is home to five species of Syngnathus pipefish, and these species frequently co-occur in near-shore eelgrass beds along the California coast. Recent work has identified exceptionally high levels of genetic diversity in southern populations of Syngnathus leptorhynchus, a widespread species which ranges from Mexico to Alaska. Microsatellite genotyping and mitochondrial sequence data are used here to study the population genetics of S. leptorhynchus and S. auliscus at a site in San Diego Bay where they are found to co-occur at high densities. While no adult hybrids were detected in the study population, analysis of male broods indicates that interspecies mating is occurring between the two species. The lack of premating isolating mechanisms between these two relatives suggests that hybridization may be common in sympatric species of Syngnathus.  相似文献

In monogamous animals, males are usually the predominant competitors for mates. However, a strictly monogamous pipefish Corythoichthys haematopterus exceptionally exhibits a reversed sex role. To understand why its sex role is reversed, we measured the adult sex ratio and the potential reproductive rate (PRR), two principal factors influencing the operational sex ratio (OSR), in a natural population of southern Japan. The adult sex ratio was biased towards females throughout the breeding season, but the PRR, which increased with water temperature, did not show sexual difference. We found that an alternative index of the OSR (Sf/Sm: sex ratio of 'time in') calculated from the monthly data was consistently biased towards females. The female-biased OSR associated with sex-role reversal has been reported in some polyandrous or promiscuous pipefish, but factors biasing the OSR differed between these pipefish and C. haematopterus. We concluded that the similar PRR between the sexes in C. haematopterus does not confer reproductive benefit of polygamous mating on either sex, resulting in strict monogamous mating, and its female-biased adult sex ratio promotes female-female competition for a mate, resulting in sex-role reversal.  相似文献

The dorsal and pectoral fins are the primary locomotor organs in seahorses (Hippocampus) and pipefish (Syngnathus). The small dorsal fins beat at high oscillatory frequencies against the viscous medium of water. Both species are able to oscillate their fins at frequencies likely exceeding the point of flicker fusion for their predators, thus enhancing their ability to remain cryptic. High-speed video demonstrated that seahorse dorsal fins beat at 30-42 Hz, while pipefish dorsal fins oscillate at 13-26 Hz. In both species, the movement of the fin is a sinusoidal wave that travels down the fin from anterior to posterior. Mechanical properties of seahorse and pipefish dorsal fin muscles were tested in vitro by the work loop method. Maximum isometric stress was 176.1 kN/m(2) in seahorse and 111.5 kN/m(2) in pipefish. Work and power output were examined at a series of frequencies encompassing the range observed in vivo, and at a number of strains (percent length change during a contractile cycle) within each frequency. At a given strain, work per cycle declined with increasing frequency, while power output rose to a maximum at an intermediate frequency and then declined. Frequency and strain interacted in a complex fashion; optimal strain was inversely related to cycle frequency over most of the frequency range tested. Seahorse dorsal fin muscle was able to generate positive work at higher cycling frequencies than pipefish. Both species produced positive work at higher frequencies than have been reported for axial and fin muscles from other fish.  相似文献

We observed the mating pattern and social behaviour of the pipefish Corythoichthys haematopterus in temperate waters of Japan during three successive breeding seasons. Males cared for a clutch in their brood pouch for 9-19 days until hatching and had several broods in the season with nonbrooding intervals of only 1 or 2 days. The population sex ratio was female biased and some females were always excluded from reproduction. Although males were sometimes courted by unmated females together with their regular partners, they always mated with the latter. The pair bond was maintained until the next season if both members survived. When males lost their partners, they remated with neighbouring unmated females within a few days. In contrast, widowed females remained unmated for a long time. Females had larger home ranges and were more active in courtship displays than males. This pipefish provides the first example of sex role reversal among monogamous syngnathid fish. We suggest that mate guarding by females is a primary proximate factor for maintenance of monogamy in this fish. Copyright 2001 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.  相似文献

In the pipefish Syngnathus typhle , pregnant males provide all parental care. Females are able to produce more eggs than males can brood, and consequently females compete more intensely for mates than do males, a phenomenon defined as sex-role reversal. As the genetic mating system influences the operation of sexual selection, we investigate variation in one phenotypic component of mate quality, female body size, as a possible proximate influence on mating system variation in S. typhle . Breeding trials were employed, each consisting of a single receptive male with four adult females. In each replicate, a focal male was paired either with a set of small or with a set of large females. Males were allowed to mate freely, and after several weeks of brood development, maternity of the progeny was resolved using three microsatellite loci. Males with access either to small or to large females successfully mated with a mean of 2.1 or 1.3 females, respectively, a significant difference. Results indicate that variation in female size can affect the mating system and thereby influence sexual selection in pipefish. Thus, the high rate of multiple mating by S. typhle males in the wild may be explained in part by the extensive size variation in naturally occurring, sexually mature females.  相似文献

The transfer of acquired and specific immunity against previously encountered bacteria from mothers to offspring boosts the immune response of the next generation and supports the development of a successful pathogen defense. While most studies claim that the transfer of immunity is a maternal trait, in the sex‐role‐reversed pipefish Syngnathus typhle, fathers nurse the embryos over a placenta‐like structure, which opens the door for additional paternal immune priming. We examined the potential and persistence of bacteria‐type‐specific parental immune priming in the pipefish S. typhle over maturation time using a fully reciprocal design with two different bacteria species (Vibrio spp. and Tenacibaculum maritimum). Our results suggest that S. typhle is able to specifically prime the next generation against prevalent local bacteria and to a limited extent even also against newly introduced bacteria species. Long‐term protection was thereby maintained only against prevailing Vibrio bacteria. Maternal and paternal transgenerational immune priming can complement each other, as they affect different pathways of the offspring immune system and come with distinct degree of specificity. The differential regulation of DNA‐methylation genes upon parental bacteria exposure in premature pipefish offspring indicates that epigenetic regulation processes are involved in transferring immune‐related information across generations. The identified trade‐offs between immune priming and reproduction determine TGIP as a costly trait, which might constrain the evolution of long‐lasting TGIP, if parental and offspring generations do not share the same parasite assembly.  相似文献

The foveal and non-foveal retinal regions of the pipefish, Corythoichthyes paxtoni (Syngnathidae, Teleostei) are examined at the level of the light and electron microscopes. The pipefish possesses a deep, pit (convexiclivate) fovea which, although lacking the displacement of the inner retinal layers as described in other vertebrate foveae, is characterised by the exclusion of rods, a marked increase in the density of photoreceptors and a regular square mosaic of four double cones surrounding a central single cone. In the perifoveal and peripheral retinal regions, the photoreceptor mosaic is disrupted by the insertion of large numbers of rods, which reduce spatial resolving power but may uniformly increase sensitivity for off-axis rays. In addition to a temporal fovea subtending the frontal binocular field, there is also a central area centralis subtending the monocular visual field. Based on morphological comparisons with other foveate teleosts, four foveal types are characterised and foveal function discussed with respect to the theoretical advantage of a regular square mosaic.  相似文献

Ritualized morning interactions, called greeting, were investigated for a natural population of the monogamous pipefish Corythoichthys haematopterus . Every morning, pair members moved to a fixed site in their overlapped home ranges within an hour of sunrise to engage in greetings for a few minutes. After the greetings, they separated and each returned to its original site. On the day of spawning, the behavioural pattern of greetings differed from that on the other days and exchanged displays intermittently until spawning, which occurred 1–3 h after sunrise. In the field experiment where either of pair members was isolated in a cage for a day, the temporarily mate-losing fish (called resident fish) approached an unpaired fish of the opposite sex, which was released at the greeting site next morning, but thereafter few interactions occurred between them. In contrast, when the partner was released after the withdrawal of the unpaired fish, the resident fish immediately approached it and they exchanged greetings. This fact suggests that each individual discriminates its partner from others. The function of daily greetings in this pipefish is discussed from aspects of the reproductive synchronization of a pair and the maintenance of monogamy without mate guarding.  相似文献

Microsatellite parentage analysis was applied to 22 broods of the northern pipefish Syngnathus fuscus for the first time. The majority of males mated singly, 23% of males mated with two females, and no males mated with more than two females. The arrangement of embryos within the brood pouch of multiply mated males reflects a previously undocumented fill pattern where full‐sib groups are segregated within the pouch by both right and left sides as well as anterior and posterior ends.  相似文献

Understanding how selection acts on traits individually and in combination is an important step in deciphering the mechanisms driving evolutionary change, but for most species, and especially those in which sexual selection acts more strongly on females than on males, we have no estimates of selection coefficients pertaining to the multivariate sexually selected phenotype. Here, we use a laboratory‐based mesocosm experiment to quantify pre‐ and post‐mating selection on female secondary sexual traits in the Gulf pipefish (Syngnathus scovelli), a sexually dimorphic, sex‐role‐reversed species in which ornamented females compete for access to choosy males. We calculate selection differentials and gradients on female traits, including ornament area, ornament number and body size for three episodes of selection related to female reproductive success (number of mates, number of eggs transferred and number of surviving embryos). Selection is strong on both ornament area and ornament size, and the majority of selection occurs during the premating episode of selection. Interestingly, selection on female body size, which has been detected in previous studies of Gulf pipefish, appears to be indirect, as evidenced by a multivariate analysis of selection gradients. Our results show that sexual selection favours either many bands or larger bands in female Gulf pipefish.  相似文献
