Ciliary aggregations have been found to occur on the olfactory epithelium of Gadus morhua (L.) and Melanogrammus aeglefinus (L.). The fine structure of ciliary aggregations is constant, consisting of 9 +2 complexes enclosed by a single membrane, though the number of complexes may vary within any ciliary aggregation. It is suggested that ciliary aggregations are motile structures associated with the sensory epithelium and may assist in the circulation of fluid between lamellae.  相似文献

Summary Adults of a stink bug,Megacopta punctissimum, form aggregations on stems of the bush-clover,Lespedeza crytobotria, in spring. They do not oviposit there, but feed and mate within aggregations. Oviposition is made on other leguminous plants such as the kudzu-vine,Pueraria lobata. Mean size of aggregations (groups of two or more individuals which sit on a stem at distance less than 3 cm from their nearest neighbors) consisted of 4.4 individuals. The sex ratios within aggregations were similar to overall sex ratio of the population including solitary individuals (0.58). More than 50% of females found in aggregations were copulating. Percentage of femalesin copula in larger aggregations was higher than that in smaller aggregations, and this difference was considered to be caused by the higher chance of sexual enconters in larger aggregations. It was suggested that the aggregation of this species on the bush-clover is not a ‘harem’ (a male monopolizes a group of females reported in some other stink bugs) but is mating aggregation to raise the chance of mating. Summary The distributional features and physical characteristics of some 1500 krill (Euphausia superba Dana) aggregations detected and sized acoustically in the south-west Indian Ocean are described. The aggregations were on average considerably smaller than elsewhere in the Antarctic. Aggregation biomass was log-normally distributed with a mean of 0.18 t. Only 3% of the aggregations were heavier than 1 t. The aggregations were on average 4.2 km apart along-track, and on 10 of the 15 survey days were randomly distributed, judged by a Chisquare test based on expected Poisson statistics. The distribution of aggregations heavier than 1 t, and of aggregations 20 km on either side of such aggregations was similarly judged to be random. These observations suggest widespread randomness throughout the survey area, which is consistent with the absence of pronounced hydrographic or topographic concentrating mechanisms in the region. On the 5 non-random days, aggregations were smaller than average and were clustered on a scale of 1 km, suggesting that they could have been in the process of fragmenting or amalgamating. Estimates of the mean nearest-neighbour distance were derived for the random distributions. It is suggested that these could be useful in the development of fisheries-dependent indices of krill abundance.  相似文献

A school project to investigate aggregations in flatworms is described. It was found by a series of simple experiments that the formation of aggregations in the flatworm, Polycelis nigra, was influenced by light intensity, temperature, and some form of chemical stimulus released by already aggregating flatworms. Such investigations could be adapted to suit many levels of school practical work.  相似文献

Understanding aggregation dynamics of forage species is important for evaluating biophysical scaling in marine ecosystems and heterogeneity of trophic interactions. In particular, zooplankton aggregations are fundamental units of many pelagic systems, but are difficult to observe continuously through space and time. Using an established modeling framework that encompasses a coupled regional oceanographic and individual‐based modeling system, we test the hypothesis that persistence (duration) of krill aggregations is dependent on their size, intensity, and location of formation within the coastal upwelling region of the California Current. In support of this hypothesis, we found that aggregation size is positively related to intensity, whereas persistence has a parabolic response to aggregation size and intensity, indicating the likelihood that large and highly persistent aggregations are rare. Persistence of krill aggregations also depends on formation location within coastal upwelling areas. We found that krill aggregations were more likely to form near a major seabird colony and that some coastal upwelling areas act as sources of aggregations for other areas. Observations of seabird aggregations were used to evaluate the potential structural realism of predicted krill aggregations. Seabird aggregations displayed marked coherence with predicted krill aggregations in space, providing important criteria on the scaling and availability of krill aggregations to breeding and migratory species. Predicting scales of krill aggregation dynamics will benefit ecosystem assessments, and numerical modeling of predator foraging and marine spatial management aimed at ensuring protection of ecologically important areas.  相似文献

We analyzed the distribution pattern and size structure in aggregations of the far eastern sea cucumber (trepang), Apostichopus japonicus in Busse Lagoon (Southern Sakhalin). Trepang populations, which differ in their size composition and population density, have been grouped by their spatial differentiation. It has been shown that in the absence of solid substrates in the lagoon, the animals gather on substrates such as the alga Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis and on clusters of the oyster Crassostrea gigas. It is found that on the southeastern part of the lagoon, trepang makes up an extensive aggregation confined to the bed of Ahnfeltia; the distribution of the holothurians mostly has a random pattern. In the northwestern part of the lagoon, trepang makes up aggregations on oyster and algal beds; the distribution of these aggregations shows a random pattern.  相似文献

In fish-eating North Pacific killer whales, large multi-pod aggregations of up to 100 animals often occur. These aggregations are thought to be reproductive gatherings where mating between members of different pods takes place. However, killer whales are social animals, and the role of these aggregations might also be establishing and maintaining social bonds between pods. Alternatively, it is also possible that multi-pod aggregations are in some way connected with foraging or searching for fish. In this study of killer whales in the western North Pacific, we describe multi-pod aggregations quantitatively and suggest their functional role in the life of fish-eating killer whales. We show that foraging is rare in multi-pod aggregations, whether inter-clan or intra-clan, and thus they are unlikely to play an important role in cooperative foraging. Socialising occurs more frequently in inter-clan rather than in intra-clan aggregations, which suggests the higher arousal level and possible mating during inter-clan aggregations. In summary, multi-pod aggregations of Kamchatka killer whales might be both reproductive assemblages and “clubs” of some kind in which whales gather to establish and maintain social bonds.  相似文献

Folding of equine cytochrome c at a low protein concentration (26 microM) eliminated a slow kinetic phase (time constant three seconds) that was observed in the previous hydrogen exchange pulse-labeling experiments at pH 6.2 and 10 degrees C. It was demonstrated that this slow folding phase was caused by intermolecular aggregations. Because heterogeneous kinetics is a very general feature in the folding of proteins characterized by pulsed hydrogen exchange coupled with two-dimensional NMR, our experimental results suggest aggregations might also be responsible for the complex folding kinetics of other proteins. This is possible since these experiments were performed at relatively high protein concentrations.  相似文献

Clonal propagation is an important life history trait for many sessile organisms, and often leads to the formation of monoclonal aggregations. In the marine environment, sea anemones have been model species for testing theory regarding the evolution of sex and understanding the contribution of sexual versus asexual reproduction to the population structure in facultatively clonal animals. However, little attention has been paid to tropical actiniarians. The corkscrew anemone Bartholomea annulata is common in tropical marine habitats in the western Atlantic and Caribbean; it forms small aggregations (2–4 anemones) on coral reefs and larger aggregations (>10 anemones) in mangrove habitats. We used field surveys and molecular analyses to investigate patterns of distribution, abundance, and genetic structure of aggregations formed by B. annulata on a reef in the US Virgin Islands and in a unique mangrove habitat in the Florida Keys. Abundance was greatest at the abandoned rock quarry mangrove habitat in the Florida Keys, where anemones formed continuously distributed aggregations carpeting the exposed limestone walls. Genetic diversity assessed via intersimple sequence repeats (ISSRs) and six microsatellite loci revealed that asexual reproduction plays only a minor role in the formation of both small and large anemone aggregations. Specifically, ISSR analyses showed that only ~10% of anemone aggregations were clonal in the US Virgin Islands, while microsatellite genotyping identified clonality in only 1 of 35 aggregations. In the Florida Keys, only four clonal genotypes were recovered within aggregations, but eight clones, representing 33% of the total surveyed population, had individuals in multiple aggregations. Thus, population structure of B. annulata appears to rely primarily on sexual reproduction, although asexual reproduction may play a nontrivial role in some environments. Mechanisms that drive the formation of genotypically diverse aggregations remain unknown, but may include attraction toward conspecifics, shared use of preferred habitats, or the local retention of larvae in partially enclosed habitats.  相似文献

In the oocytes of Eomenacanthus stramineus accessory nuclei arise by budding from the nuclear envelope. It is suggested that microtubules and the thick layer of the nuclear lamina are involved in this process. Newly formed accessory nuclei contain aggregations of fibrillogranular material. These aggregations are slightly Feulgen positive, RNA negative and stain positively with the AgNOR method. During later developmental stages one dense, RNA-positive inclusion appears in each accessory nucleus. These inclusions consist of on Ag-NOR-positive cortical layer and an Ag-NOR-negative core. The function of accessory nuclei in the species investigated is discussed in the light of these results.  相似文献

Gregariousness is a common feature in aposematic insect prey and offers the additional benefit of enhancing the effectiveness of their toxic defences. Aggregations of the aposematic larvae of two species of leaf beetles, Paropsis atomaria and Paropsisterna variicollis, occur together on the same Eucalyptus trees over spring and summer. Conventionally, the colouration of these larvae is thought to provide aposematic protection against vertebrate predators, but supporting evidence is limited. We determine whether environmental preferences contribute to the heterospecific aggregations, and the potential costs for larvae of living in heterospecific aggregations. We surveyed natural aggregations of the larvae of both species in the field and recorded environmental variables of these aggregations. This revealed that heterospecific aggregations occurred more commonly at higher leaf temperatures, and in less visually conspicuous locations. Paropsis atomaria larvae were twice as likely to be found in heterospecific aggregations than Pa. variicollis. Next, we manipulated larval aggregations in the field to investigate the survival and gregarious behaviour of larvae in heterospecific aggregations. The gregarious behaviour of both species of larvae did not differ between heterospecific and monospecific aggregations. Further, the survival of larvae did not significantly differ between heterospecific and monospecific aggregations. We suggest that the preference for P. atomaria larvae to aggregate with Pavariicollis at higher leaf temperature results in the observed heterospecific aggregations, with a potential benefit of lowerer parasitoidism rates for P. atomaria.  相似文献

Reef fish spawning aggregations are attractive and often lucrative to fish but particularly vulnerable to fishing, with many cases of declines or extirpations. While awareness of the risks of aggregation exploitation has grown substantially in the tropical western Atlantic in the last decade, the phenomenon of aggregation-spawning is little known in the vast Indo-Pacific region where few aggregations are managed or monitored, and are rarely considered in marine-protected area designations. Even in the tropical western Atlantic and Caribbean, marine-protected area planning, until recently, did not typically consider spawning aggregations. Available data and analyses of aggregation-fisheries and aggregating species strongly suggest that: (1) the majority of known aggregations that are exploited are yielding declining landings; (2) aggregating species show greatest overall declines in local fisheries when their aggregations are also exploited; (3) from an economic perspective, aggregation fishing may yield lower prices for fish, or aggregations may be more valuable unexploited, as a source of fish for local fisheries or as tourist attractions; (4) hyperstability can mask declines in aggregation-fisheries, based on fishery-dependent data; (5) monitoring of aggregation catches by either fishery-dependent or fishery-independent means is deceptively challenging. There are also possible ecosystem-level consequences of reducing or eliminating spawning aggregations. We conclude that aggregation-fisheries are likely to be sustainable only for limited subsistence-level use, that the precautionary principle should be more widely applied in aggregation-fisheries and that, despite growing interest in aggregations over the last decade, few of the key biological questions necessary for effective management have been, or are being, addressed.  相似文献

Summary Field observation indicated that extensive aggregation behavior occurs in Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, an important echinoid herbivore in rocky subtidal zones of northern New England. The relationship of this behavior to the behavioral ecology of this species was investigated. Laboratory studies indicated that urchins are chemically sensitive to the stimuli of food and other urchins. Quantitative field experiments with tagged animals and transects showed the existence of two types of aggregations: feeding and nonfeeding, which appear to be pervasive phenomena in the biology of S. droebachiensis. It is concluded that, depending upon their hunger state, urchins shuttle between feeding aggregations in exposed locations and non-feeding aggregations located in relatively sheltered areas (where they spend most of their time). Individuals of S. droebachiensis aggregate actively through response to other urchins in the form of chemotaxis. The aggregative behavior may be maintained for its selective value in terms of defense from predation and, to lesser extents, facilitation of feeding and breeding.  相似文献

Summary Three kinds of aggregation behaviour were observed in an exposed shore population of Nucella lapillus. Aggregations on the open rock surface during the summer protected dogwhelks from water movement, and were not found on shores where the topography conferred protection. Feeding occurred mainly within these aggregations, probably because individuals experienced less disturbance there than when isolated. Physical contact was important in holding animals together.Winter and pre-breeding aggregations were usually found in clefts or pools. All age groups formed winter aggregations, but those of immature dogwhelks were not as permanent as those of adults, and the latter merged with the prebreeding aggregations. Winter aggregations protected dogwhelks from dislodgment when their ability to regain a foothold was reduced by low temperatures, while pre-breeding aggregations brought the sexes together for fertilization, but the permanence of adult winter aggregations suggested that reproductive activity may have been occurring within them.  相似文献

Aggregation behavior is common throughout the animal world, although it is rare in spiders (Araneae). Nephila clavipes spiders are frequently found both in solitary webs and in aggregations of conspecifics. N. clavipes aggregations are not considered social, because these spiders do not engage in food sharing or group parental care. The currently accepted explanation for N. clavipes aggregations is that they form passively, as spiders aggregate in response to the patchy distribution of food resources in the environment. Here, we show instead that N. clavipes females actively seek out conspecifics and, therefore, that aggregations arise from conspecific attraction. We experimentally established that (1) N. clavipes females actively follow the trails left by conspecifics and (2) aggregations are formed independently of prey density in a particular area. These results suggest that while aggregations in high food patches increase encounter rates of conspecific spiders and support the nutritional needs of multiple large spiders, this potential benefit is not the proximate mechanism for aggregation. Thus, we hypothesize that N. clavipes females likely acquire fitness benefits from aggregating with conspecifics.  相似文献

The lymphoid structures in the gastrointestinal tract of immunized and non-immunized adult Xenopus laevis were studied by light and fluorescent microscopy. Serial sections stained with May-Grunnwald Giemsa showed that lymphoid aggregations and scattered lymphoid cells are present along the whole digestive tract. The aggregations are few and rather small in the oesophagus and stomach, they are particularly voluminous in the duodenum. An indirect immunofluorescent technique using antisera against Xenopus laevis 19S and 7S immunoglobulins and their heavy polypeptide chains, revealed the presence of immunoglobulin-containing cells in the duodenal region. The oesophagus and stomach were devoid of these. It has been shown that the immunoglobulins produced in the duodenal lamina propria are formed of both heavy and light polypeptide chains, and that the heavy chains are of the 19S H-type.  相似文献

It is well known that cytokinins are a class of phytohormones that promote cell division in plant roots and shoots. However, their targets, biological functions, and implications in mammalian systems have rarely been examined. In this study, we show that one cytokinin, zeatin riboside, can prevent pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells from serum deprivation-induced apoptosis by acting on the adenosine A(2A) receptor (A(2A)-R), which was blocked by an A(2A)-R antagonist and a protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor, demonstrating the functional ability of zeatin riboside by mediating through A(2A)-R signaling event. Since the A(2A)-R was implicated as a therapeutic target in treating Huntington's disease (HD), a cellular model of HD was applied by transfecting mutant huntingtin in PC12 cells. By using filter retardation assay and confocal microscopy we found that zeatin riboside reversed mutant huntingtin (Htt)-induced protein aggregations and proteasome deactivation through A(2A)-R signaling. PKA inhibitor blocked zeatin riboside-induced suppression of mutant Htt aggregations. In addition, PKA activated proteasome activity and reduced mutant Htt protein aggregations. However, a proteasome inhibitor blocked both zeatin riboside-and PKA activator-mediated suppression of mutant Htt aggregations, confirming mediation of the A(2A)-R/PKA/proteasome pathway. Taken together, zeatin riboside might have therapeutic potential as a novel neuroprotectant and a lead for treating neurodegenerative disorders.  相似文献

Eight microsatellite loci were used to investigate the genetic structure of the giant honeybee (Apis dorsata) population in northeast India. This species migrates seasonally between summer and winter nesting sites, and queens appear to return to their previously occupied site. Furthermore, there is a strong tendency for colonies of this species to aggregate at perennially utilized nesting sites that may be shared by more than 150 colonies. These behavioral features suggest that colonies within aggregations should be more related than random colonies, but that the long-distance migration could act to minimize genetic differentiation both between geographical areas and within aggregations. Our genetic study supports these conjectures arising from natural history. A. dorsata aggregations are comprised of colonies that share more alleles than expected by chance. Although queens heading neighboring colonies are not close relatives, fixation indices show significant genetic differentiation among aggregation sites. However, there appears to be sufficient gene flow among aggregations to prevent high degrees of relatedness developing between colonies within aggregations. The results also suggest that there is significant population structuring between geographical regions, although the level of structuring caused by aggregation exceeds the differentiation attributable to geographic region.  相似文献

Primarily for intertidal species, internal brooding has been reported as a frequently used reproductive strategy of sea anemones. While brooding reduces dispersal, this strategy seems to be beneficial in a harsh environment, such as the intertidal zone. We focused on the species composition, habitat preference and spatial structure of the internally brooding sea anemones, Aulactinia stella and Urticina crassicornis, which both form aggregations in the intertidal zone of the Barents Sea. We analyzed the color patterns of polyps within aggregations and the distance between polyps at different ages. Juveniles settled near the individual parent that released them. The distance between the U. crassicornis parent individual and its juveniles increased with increasing size of the juveniles. This tendency leads to a spatial structure based on the aggregations comprising one or two reproducing individuals that are surrounded by small, identically colored anemones. Our findings revealed that monochromatic aggregations dominated, which suggests that U. crassicornis similar to A. stella may reproduce asexually. A. stella appeared to be more resistant to wave action and more able to colonize the sandy ground compared to U. crassicornis, which prefers large boulders providing shelter, avoids sites exposed to strong wave action and often occurs in dense aggregations in the habitat patches favorable for survival and reproduction. It seems that internal brooding allows for the successful colonization of harsh and heterogeneous habitats, such as the intertidal zone, by counteracting the washout by waves and tidal action.  相似文献

Spawning aggregations in coral-reef fishes have been hypothesized to confer any one of several mutually non-exclusive benefits, largely expected to serve the interests of both sexes simultaneously. Here we provide indication that in the brown surgeonfish, Acanthurus nigrofuscus, spawning aggregations may confer a sex-specific benefit. Following tagged individuals en-route to their daily spawning-aggregation site we found that while migrating groups (≤20 fish) consist of both males and females, females tend to occupy the lead position more often than expected by chance. In addition, we found evidence that female A. nigrofuscus divide their daily egg-stock among several spawning bouts within the aggregations. We propose that female leadership en-route to spawning aggregations, together with the potential benefits of multiple female mating, are consistent with a sex-specific benefit to spawning aggregations.  相似文献
