An investigation was made of the number of preformed organs in winter buds of 3-year-old reiterated complexes of the 'Granny Smith' cultivar. Winter bud content was studied with respect to bud position: terminal buds were compared on both long shoots and spurs according to branching order and shoot age, while axillary buds were compared between three zones (distal, median and proximal) along 1-year-old annual shoots in order 1. The percentage of winter buds that differentiated into inflorescences was determined and the flowers in each bud were counted for each bud category. The other organ categories considered were scales and leaf primordia. The results confirmed that a certain number of organs must be initiated before floral differentiation occurred. The minimum limit was estimated at about 15 organs on average, including scales. Total number of lateral organs formed was shown to vary with both bud position and meristem age, increasing from newly formed meristems to 1- and 2-year-old meristems on different shoot types. These differences in bud organogenesis depending on bud position, were consistent with the morphogenetic gradients observed in apple tree architecture. Axillary buds did not contain more than 15 organs on average and this low organogenetic activity of the meristems was related to a low number of flowers per bud. In contrast, the other bud categories contained more than 15 differentiated organs on average and a trade-off was observed between leaf and flower primordia. The ratio between the number of leaf and flower primordia per bud varied with shoot type. When the terminal buds on long shoots and spurs were compared, those on long shoots showed more flowers and a higher ratio of leaf to flower primordia.  相似文献

The evolutionary trend and its ecological implications in sympodial and monopodial branching patterns has been investigated in 20 JapaneseAcer spp. through comparison of shoot tip abortion and terminal bud formation. The genus is divided into two species groups according to its branching pattern, one (6 species) predominantly exhibiting sympodial branching with frequent monopodial branching in short shoots (sympodial species), and the other (14 species) exhibiting only monopodial branching (monopodial species). The early ontogeny of leaf and bud scales is described. Despite the difference in branching patterns, the bud scales of terminal buds are essentially the same in having a leaf base developed to function as a protecting organ. In all the sympodial species, during the abortion of a sympodium shoot tip, one or two pairs of primordia were found to occur on the apex, and later wither. These primordia resemble bud scales of terminal buds in their ontogeny and morphology, and appear to be rudimentary. It is suggested that a rudimentary terminal bud develops together with the establishment of sympodial branching, and that sympodial branching has originated from monopodial branching. Based on this proposed evolutionary trend, it is suggested thatAcer has moved from less shady habitats into shady habitats with monopodial branching (advantageous for vertical growth) changing into sympodial branching (advantageous for lateral spread).  相似文献

Needle primordia in buds and branch lengths were assessed in the crown of a plantation-grown white spruce tree. There was a gradation in needle primordia in buds in branches within the crown. The largest number of primordia was in the terminal bud of the leading main stem shoot, with the number in first-order whorl lateral shoot terminal buds decreasing from whorl 1 to whorl 4, below which buds contained a similar small number of primordia (about one-third as many as in the terminal shoot). Previous year's shoot elongation followed a similar pattern (i.e., elongation of whorl branches was greater closer to the top of the tree and elongation in the fourth through ninth whorls was about one-third that of the main stem leader). Higher order branches within whorls had within-branch gradation in shoot elongation and number of needle primordia, with older branches having as few as 16–30 primordia in buds and 3–4 cm elongation for high-order branches on older main stem whorls. There were strong correlations between the number of primordia in branch terminal buds and branch length/diameter and bud length/diameter/volume. In both black spruce and white spruce, there were strong correlations of number of needle primordia in main stem leader terminal buds with number of needle primordia in terminal buds of first and second whorl leaders.  相似文献

Buds of shoots from the trunk, main branches, secondary branchesand short branches of 10–21 year-old Nothofagus pumiliotrees were dissected and their contents recorded. The numberof differentiated nodes in buds was compared with the numberof nodes of sibling shoots developed at equivalent positionsduring the following growing season. Axillary buds generallyhad four cataphylls, irrespective of bud position in the tree, whereas terminal buds had up to two cataphylls. There were morenodes in terminal buds, and the most distal axillary buds, oftrunk shoots than in more proximal buds of trunk shoots, andin all buds of shoots at all other positions. The highest numberof nodes in the embryonic shoot of a bud varied between 15 and20. All shoots had proximal lateral buds containing an embryonicshoot with seven nodes, four with cataphylls and three withgreen leaf primordia. The largest trunk, and main branch, shootswere made up of a preformed portion and a neoformed portion;all other shoots were entirely preformed. In N. pumilio, theacropetally-increasing size of the sibling shoots derived froma particular parent shoot resulted from differences in: (1)the number of differentiated organs in the buds; (2) the probabilityof differentiation of additional organs during sibling shootextension; (3) sibling shoot length; (4) sibling shoot diameter;and (5) the death of the apex and the most distal leaves ofeach sibling shoot. The structure of shoots, in particular of winter buds, ofHydrangea macrophylla was examined. The non-flower-bearing shoot is usually composed of a lower and an upper part, between which a boundary is discernible by means of a distinctly short internode. This internode is the lowermost of the upper part, and it is usually shorter than the internodes immediately above and below, although the internodes tend to shorten successively from the proximal to the distal part of the shoot. Variations exist in the following characters among the terminal bud, the axillary bud on the lower part of the shoot and the axillary bud on the upper part: (1) length of bud; (2) character of the outermost pair of leaf primordia; (3) degree of development of secondary buds in the winter bud; and (4) the number of leaf primordia. Usually, the terminal bud contains several pairs of foliage leaf primordia with a primordial inflorescence at the terminal of the bud, but the axiallary bud contains only the primordia of foliage leaves in addition to a pair of bud scales.  相似文献

The size (length and diameter) and number of leaf primordia of winter buds of Nothofagus antarctica (G. Forster) Oerst. shrubs were compared with the size and number of leaves of shoots derived from buds in equivalent positions. Buds developed in two successive years were compared in terms of size and number of leaf primordia. Bud size and the number of leaf primordia per bud were greater for distal than for proximally positioned buds. Shoots that developed in the five positions closest to the distal end of their parent shoots had significantly more leaves than more proximally positioned shoots of the same parent shoots. The positive relationship between the size of a shoot and that of its parent shoot was stronger for proximal than for distal positions on the parent shoots. For each bud position on the parent shoots there were differences in the number of leaf primordia per bud between consecutive years. The correlations between the number of leaf primordia per bud and bud size, bud position and parent shoot size varied between years. Only shoots produced close to the distal end of a parent shoot developed neoformed leaves; more proximal sibling shoots consisted entirely of preformed leaves. Leaf neoformation, a process usually linked with high shoot vigour in woody plants, seems to be widespread among the relatively small shoots developed in N. antarctica shrubs, which may relate to the species' opportunistic response to disturbance.  相似文献

Understanding the relationships between bud size and position and bud fate through time is crucial for identifying and subsequently modeling the mechanisms underlying tree architecture. However, there is a lack of information on how bud size drives crown architectural patterns in coexisting tree species. We studied bud demography in two coexisting Mediterranean oak species with contrasting leaf habit (Quercus ilex, evergreen; Q. faginea, deciduous). The main objective was to analyse the effect of bud size on the fate of buds with different positions along the shoot (apical, leaf axillary and scale-cataphyll axillary buds). The number, length and position of all buds and stems were recorded in marked branches during 4 years. Study species presented different strategies in bud production and lifespan. The evergreen species showed greater mortality rate than the deciduous one, which produced larger buds. Bud size and position were highly related since apical buds where longer than axillary ones and bud length declined basipetally along the stem. Apical buds had also higher chances of bursting than axillary ones. Within positions, longer buds presented a higher probability of bursting than shorter ones, although no absolute size threshold was found below which bud bursting was impaired. In Q. ilex, four-year-old buds were still viable and able to burst, whereas in Q. faginea practically all buds burst in their first year or died soon after. Such different bud longevities may indicate contrasting strategies in primary growth between both species. Q. ilex is able to accumulate viable buds for several ages, whereas Q. faginea seems to rely on the production of large current-year buds with high bursting probability under favourable environmental conditions.  相似文献

Al -talib , Khalil H., and John G. Torrey . (U. California, Berkeley.) Sclereid distribution in the leaves of Pseudotsuga under natural and experimental conditions. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(1): 71–79. Illus. 1961.—A study of the distribution of sclereids in cleared leaves taken from 1-, 2-, and 4-year-old shoots of an adult tree of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco showed a repeated pattern of sclereid distribution along the shoot axis with many sclereids in the basal leaves grading into few or no sclereids in the terminal leaves of each year's growth. Attempts were made to influence sclereid distribution by bud defoliation of attached branches with and without auxin treatment and by testing the effects of growth-regulating substances on sclereid formation in leaves of excised buds of Pseudotsuga cultured in vitro. Whereas removal of the basal ¾ of the leaves at the time of bud unfolding had no effect on bud, leaf or sclereid development, removal of the leaves of the upper half or complete defoliation led to premature expansion of next year's terminal bud with leaves developing in part from presumptive bud-scale primordia. Indoleacetic acid at 0.5% in lanolin paste applied to the defoliated region prevented this premature bud expansion. Defoliation of the basal half did not affect sclereid formation in the terminal leaves. Sclereid development in leaves of prematurely expanded buds on defoliated branches was normal except in the few cases where bud expansion occurred in the presence of low-auxin concentrations. Then, sclereid development was inhibited. Sclereid formation in leaves of excised buds grown in nutrient culture was generally much less frequent than in intact branches, and auxin treatment still further reduced the frequency of sclereids. It was concluded that sclereid initiation and differentiation in the intact plant may well be under the control of hormonal factors in the plant, one of which may be auxin.  相似文献

STOFFBERG, E., 1991. Morphological and ontogenetic studies on southern African podocarps. Shoot apex morphology and ovuliferous cone initiation. Four species of Podocarpus indigenous to southern Africa were investigated. The morphology of the primordium of the female cone is compared with that of the shoot apex. Rhythmic growth occurs in Podocarpus. The external morphology of bud scales protecting dormant shoot apices is described and illustrated. Female strobili of the three species of section Podocarpus studied are initiated in the axils of euphylls during the spring growth flush as laterally flattened triangular structures. The axillary position of a female cone indicates that it is a modified shoot. The first two cone bracts (prophylls) are formed approximately at right angles to the subtending bract (one or both are fertile), while the 3rd and 4th bracts originate on the anterior and posterior sides of the strobilus respectively. Two to four bracts per cone are formed, not in pairs–the phyllotaxis is spiral. In P.falcatus primordia of female strobili and vegetative branches could be distinguished only after emergence of the seed scale complex. Based on cell differentiation, well-defined cytological zones can be distinguished in the shoot apex and it is classified as being of the Abies-Cryptomeria-lype. Meristematic zones of cone primordia and vegetative branches are basically similar, although the former are less well defined. No gradual transition from a vegetative to a reproductive apex could be identified and it would seem that the fate of axillary buds are determined at the time of their origination or even before.  相似文献

Investigation of the development and organography of the shoot systems of Microgramma vacciniifolia and M. squamulosa was undertaken for the purpose of determining: (1) the features of shoot growth that are responsible for the distinctive vining character of these epiphytic ferns; and (2) the mode of origin of branches and their contrast with leaf initiation. Shoots of both species are dorsiventral and plagiotropic (i.e., parallel to the substrate) in habit. Since the shoot apical meristem is radial in transectional symmetry, shoot dorsiventrality in Microgramma is a postgenital or secondary developmental event, and its inception is related to the initiation of lateral appendages. Leaves and buds arise in a distichous phyllotaxis and occupy opposite and alternating positions on the dorsal surfaces and flanks of the rhizome. Endogenous roots are initiated in two rows from the ventral surface of the stem, in the vicinity of the rhizome meristem; however, they do not emerge from the rhizome until some distance behind the tip and do not elongate until the region of substrate contact. We conclude that the vining nature of this fern rhizome is a result of precocious internodal elongation and the concomitant delay of leaf and bud expansion in the region of stem elongation. In addition, observation of branch origin confirms previous suggestions that branching in Microgramma is strictly lateral and extra-axillary and not a dichotomous derivative as proposed by some workers. Leaf and bud primordia differ not only in the nature of their respective vascular supplies but also in their actual course of initiation. In the case of the leaf, the primordium is precociously emergent and exhibits a lenticular apical cell at its summit when it is only one plastochron removed from the flanks of the apical meristem. By contrast, initials of the bud primordium divide less actively and remain in a sunken position for at least 5–6 plastochrons; only when the bud apex becomes expanded and emergent does a tetrahedral apical cell become recognizable at the tip of the bud promeristem. Because of the distinctive pattern of branch and leaf origin, as well as the lack of adventitious and phyllogenous origin of branch primordia, we suggest that the shoot of Microgramma is a useful test organism for the re-examination of the problem of leaf and bud determination in the ferns.  相似文献

In both Chamaedorea seifrizii Burret and C. cataractarum Martius each adult foliage leaf subtends one axillary bud. The proximal buds in C. seifrizii are always vegetative, producing branches (= new shoots or suckers); and the distal buds on a shoot are always reproductive, producing inflorescences. The prophyll and first few scale leaves of a vegetative branch lack buds. Transitional leaves subtend vegetative buds and adult leaves subtend reproductive buds. Both types of buds are first initiated in the axil of the second or third leaf primordia from the apex, P2 or P3. Later development of both types of bud tends to be more on the adaxial surface of the subtending leaf base than on the shoot axis. Axillary buds of C. cataractarum are similarly initiated in the axil of P2 or P3 and also have an insertion that is more foliar than cauline. However, all buds develop as inflorescences. Vegetative branches arise irregularly by a division of the apex within an enclosing leaf (= P1). A typical inflorescence bud is initiated in the axil of the enclosing leaf when it is in the position of P2 and when each new branch has initiated its own P1. No scale leaves are produced by either branch and the morphological relationship among branches and the enclosing leaf varies. Often the branches are unequal and the enclosing leaf is fasciated. The vegetative branching in C. cataractarum is considered to be developmentally a true dichotomy and is compared with other examples of dichotomous (= terminal) branching in the Angiospermae.  相似文献

A study of the composition of long-branch terminal buds (LBTB) of Pinus banksiana Lamb. and the yearly periodicity associated with their formation, development, and elongation was undertaken. Each LBTB has lateral bud zones and zones of cataphylls lacking axillary buds. When present, staminate cone primordia differentiate from the lowest lateral buds in the lowest lateral bud zone of the LBTB. Ovulate cone primordia and lateral long-branch buds can differentiate from the upper lateral buds in any lateral bud zone. When both types of buds are present, lateral long-branch buds are uppermost. Dwarf-branch buds occur in all lateral bud zones. During spring LBTB internodes elongate, new cataphylls are initiated, dwarf branches elongate, needles form and elongate, pollen forms and is released, and ovulate cones are pollinated. During summer buds form in the axils of the newly formed cataphylls. By early fall the new LBTB are in overwintering condition and the four types of lateral buds are discernable. The cytohistological zonation of the LBTB shoot apex is similar to that of more than 20 other conifer species. Cells in shoot apices of pine are usually arranged in distinct zones: apical initials, subapical initials, central meristem, and peripheral meristem. Periclinal divisions occur in the surface cells of the apex; therefore no tunica is present. At any given time, shoot apex volume and shape vary among LBTB in various positions on a tree. In any one LBTB on a tree, shoot apex shape changes from a low dome during spring to a high dome during summer to an intermediate shape through fall and winter.  相似文献

The effect of assimilate supply on axillary bud developmentand subsequent shoot growth was investigated in roses. Differencesin assimilate supply were imposed by differential defoliation.Fresh and dry mass of axillary buds increased with increasedassimilate supply. The growth potential of buds was studiedeither by pruning the parent shoot above the bud, by graftingthe bud or by culturing the bud in vitro. Time until bud breakwas not clearly affected by assimilate supply during bud development,Increase in assimilate supply slightly increased the numberof leaves and leaf primordia in the bud; the number of leavespreceding the flower on the shoot grown from the axillary budsubstantially increased. No difference was found in the numberof leaves preceding the flower on shoots grown from buds attachedto the parent shoot and those from buds grafted on a cutting, indicating that at the moment of release from inhibition thebud meristem became determined to produce a specific numberof leaves and to develop into a flower. Assimilate supply duringaxillary bud development increased the number of pith cells, but the final size of the pith in the subsequent shoot was largelydetermined by cell enlargement, which was dependent on assimilatesupply during shoot growth. Shoot growth after release frominhibition was affected by assimilate supply during axillarybud development only when buds sprouted attached to the parentshoot, indicating that shoot growth is, to a major extent, dependenton the assimilate supply available while growth is taking place.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Assimilate supply, axillary bud, cell number, cell size, defoliation, development, growth potential, meristem programming, pith, Rosa hybrida, rose, shoot growth  相似文献

The time at which a bud began to expand was related to its positionnot only on an individual shoot but also within the crown. Thedistribution of buds and branches on the shoot was uneven; theshoot tip, where they were densely clustered, was termed the‘whorl; and the remainder of the shoot, where they werewidely spaced, the ‘interwhorl’ stem. In spring, the terminal bud started expanding before the ‘whorl’buds which preceded the ‘interwhorl’ stem buds;completion of the flush of growth, determined by the end ofleaf expansion, occurred in the reverse order, ‘interwhorl’> ‘whorl’ > terminal. Similarly bud expansionstarted at the top of the crown and progressed downwards, andthe first shoots to complete their flush were at the bottomof the crown. Approximately 60% of the buds on each shoot beganexpanding in spring but only about half of these formed branches.Bud abscission began in May and by Sep. 45% of buds originallypresent had abscised. Most of-the buds that did not abscisewere the small buds at the base of the shoot that were not originallyassociated with a leaf. Approximately 42% of ‘whorl’buds and 28% of MnterwhorP stem buds formed branches. ‘Whorl’branches were approx. 60% longer that ‘interwhorl’stem branches; buds on the lower surface of the shoot producedlonger branches than those on the upper surface. The implicationsof the results for the development of crown form and selectionof superior oak are discussed. Quercus petraea, oak, buds, branches, crown form  相似文献

  • Location and degree of protection of aerial buds are important functional traits in disturbance- or stress-prone environments since aerial buds ensure the development of new organs under favourable growing conditions. This study was carried out in a Brazilian Cerrado area under regeneration after long-term Pinus cultivation, where the trees were clear-cut in 2012 and the remaining material was burned in 2014.
  • After the fire treatment, several species resprouted from belowground organs and their aboveground organs were directly exposed to full sunlight. We collected 15 terminal branches with fully expanded leaves from three individuals of each of three Eugenia species to investigate if those with well-developed belowground organs invest in bark for aboveground bud protection. The samples were analysed using light and electron microscopy.
  • In addition to terminal and axillary buds, all species presented accessory buds, and the number varied according to the node analysed. None of the aerial buds were protected by bark, but all were well protected by cataphylls and densely pubescent leaf primordia. There were also inter- and intra-petiolar colleters that released a mucilaginous protein exudate. The distance between the shoot apical meristem and the outer surface was longer in the terminal bud than in axillary buds. The bud leaf primordia covering the shoot apical meristem had a thick cuticle, unicellular non-glandular trichomes that accumulate phenolic and lipophilic compounds, and secretory cavities.
  • Our study shows that all three Eugenia species studied here had highly protected aerial buds allocated from belowground organs. These morphological traits may improve the chances of the species' persistence in areas subjected to frost events, low relative humidity, high irradiance and harmful UV levels.

The tillering phase in Hordeum bulbosum L. is terminated whenthe newly-formed axillary buds no longer emerge as tillers, but differentiate into dormant regeneration buds. The patternof development of the axillary buds differs during the tilleringphase and the post-tillering phase. During the former, accumulationof leaf primordia corresponds to the age of the bud, i.e., leafnumber per bud increases basipetally along the shoot. Duringthe post-tillering phase, leaf number per bud decreases basipetallyfrom the base of the future bulb internode. This transitionis brought about by an acceleration in the rate of accumulationof leaf primordia which is more sustained in the buds situatedcloser to the base of the bulb internode. These positional differencesin the morphogenesis of the regeneration buds are reflectedin their physiological responses during the relaxation of dormancyand activation of the buds.  相似文献

The effect of axillary bud age on the development and potentialfor growth of the bud into a shoot was studied in roses. Ageof the buds occupying a similar position on the plant variedfrom 'subtending leaf just unfolded' up to 1 year later. Withincreasing age of the axillary bud its dry mass, dry-matterpercentage and number of leaves, including leaf primordia, increased. The apical meristem of the axillary bud remained vegetativeas long as subjected to apical dominance, even for 1 year. The potential for growth of buds was studied either by pruningthe parent shoot above the bud, by grafting the bud or by culturingthe bud in vitro. When the correlative inhibition (i.e. dominationof the apical region over the axillary buds) was released, additionalleaves and eventually a flower formed. The number of additionalleaves decreased with increasing bud age and became more orless constant for axillary buds of shoots beyond the harvestablestage, while the total number of leaves preceding the flowerincreased. An increase in bud age was reflected in a greaternumber of scales, including transitional leaves, and in a greaternumber of non-elongated internodes of the subsequent shoot.Time until bud break slightly decreased with increasing budage; it was long, relatively, for 1 year old buds, when theysprouted attached to the parent shoot. Shoot length, mass andleaf area were not clearly affected by the age of the bud thatdeveloped into the shoot. With increasing bud age the numberof pith cells in the subsequent shoot increased, indicatinga greater potential diameter of the shoot. However, final diameterwas dependent on the assimilate supply after bud break. Axillarybuds obviously need a certain developmental stage to be ableto break. When released from correlative inhibition at an earlierstage, increased leaf initiation occurs before bud break.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Age, axillary bud, cell number, cell size, pith, shoot growth, Rosa hybrida, rose  相似文献

The organogenetic cycle of shoots on main branches of 4-year-old Juglans regia trees was studied. Mono- and bicyclic floriferous and vegetative annual shoots were analysed. Five parent annual shoot types were sampled between October 1992 and August 1993. Organogenesis of summer growth units was monitored between 16 Jun. and 3 Aug. 1993. Variations over time in the number of nodes, cataphylls and embryonic green leaves of terminal buds were studied. The number of nodes of parent shoot buds was compared with the number of nodes of shoots derived from parent shoot buds. The spring growth units of mono- and bicyclic shoots consist exclusively of preformed leaves which were differentiated, respectively, during the spring flush of growth (mid-April until mid-May) or the summer flush of growth (mid-June until early August) in the previous growing season. Thus, winter buds may consist of flower and leaf primordia differentiated in two different periods during annual shoot extension. The summer growth units of bicyclic shoots consist of preformed leaves that were differentiated in spring buds during the spring flush of growth in the current growing season. Bud morphology is compared between spring and summer shoots.  相似文献
