Helisoma duryi, Biomphalaria alexandrine and Bulinus truncatuswere maintained in media with seven different sodium chlorideconcentrations ranging from 0.6 to 32 mM. Growth of H. duryiwas significantly reduced only in the 32 mM NaCl treatment,while no significant effects were observed in the net reproductiverate or in egg-laying rates. Bulinus truncatus showed optimalgrowth within the range of 1 to 8 mM NaCl and the net reproductiveand egg-laying rates were reduced in the 32 mM NaCl treatment.Growth of B. alexandrina was reduced in the 16 and 32 mM NaCltreatments, while the net reproductive rate was reduced in the16 and 32 mM NaCl treatments, while the net reproductive ratewas reduced in media with more than 2.0 mM NaCl. Hatching ofB. truncatus eggs was not affected by the high NaCl concentrations,while the hatchability of H. duryi eggs was reduced in the 32mM treatment. Helisoma duryi has been proposed as a biological control agent in schistosomiasis due to its superiority in laboratory competition experiments with various species of the intermediate host snails. Therefore it was considered important to evaluate the response of this snail species and the intermediate host species, Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus, to various physical, chemical and biological factors under laboratory conditions in order to obtain information on the similarities in the ecological niches of these species. The factors considered in the present paper are: temperature, darkness, starvation and food. All three species had optimal growth and egg laying at 26–28 °C. Only H. duryi survived for a longer period at 33°C and it was capable of starting egg laying at this temperature although the onset was delayed. However, low temperature (18°C) caused a relatively larger decrease in egg laying of H. duryi than in the other two species. Growth and egg laying was reduced for H. duryi and B. truncatus kept under darkness and B. alexandrina could not tolerate maintenance under darkness. A few days of starvation of juvenile snails had no effect on later growth and egg laying capacity of the survivors, although mortality in B. truncatus was increased. B. alexandrina had a lower tolerance to starvation than the other two species. Egg laying of snails fed only one of the three laboratory food types decreased for all three species in the order: Vov-vov (dog food in dry pellets), Tetramin (fish food) and lettuce. Combinations of lettuce and one or more proteinaceous food types gave optimal growth and egg laying for all three species.  相似文献

Helisoma duryi, a planorbid snail species, which is a potentialbiological control agent of the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis,was introduced in an irrigation scheme (T.P.C.) in northernTanzania in 1972. The species has been present at T.P.C. since,and during a snail survey in January 1981, a great variationin the shell morphology of H. duryi, ranging from typical H.duryi forms to forms resembling Biomphalaria pfeifferi, theintermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni in the area, was observed.The Biomphalaria- Wkc forms of H. duryi could constitute anentire population but also occasionally occurred in populationsof typical H. duryi. This study was undertaken to determine whether simple shellmeasurements, or ratios between some of these could be usefulin discriminating between H. duryi and B. pfeifferi. Followingparameters were considered: shell height, shell diameter, diameterof the umbilicus, ratio between shell height and diameter ofthe umbilicus, and the number of whorls. Biological control of schistosomiasis by means of introduction of a competitor, Helisoma duryi, of the intermediate host snails has been proposed. In the present laboratory studies the competitive relationships between H. duryi and two Biomphalaria species were investigated both when direct interference between the two competing species was possible and when not. A reduction of growth and reproduction of Biomphalaria was found when direct interference was involved but the effect of competition was lessened when the two species were separated by a mesh.The data showed that despite continuous presence of food in the aquaria food competition was involved in the direct interference between the two species, while the role of chemical interactions could not be evaluated conclusively from the present experiments.The role of food is discussed.  相似文献

Annual and seasonal changes in population densities of Bulinussenegalensis Müller 1781 and B. truncatus (Audouin, 1827)were studied in temporary pools of the west sahelian zone inNiger in relation to environmental factors. B. senegalensisis present in the temporary pools whatever their duration, whereasB. truncatus inhabits only the more persistent pools. B. senegalensispopulations develop mostly during the rainy season when thewater temperature is warm. B. truncatus is most abundant afterthe rainy season when the water temperature is cooler, but thissnail may increase when the water temperature is warmer duringunusual rainy seasons with low and intermittent rainfall. Fieldobservations suggest that interspecific competition is exceptionallyoccurring in the pool colonized by both B. senegalensis andB. truncatus. The implications of these observations on treatmentand retreatment schedules for schistosome infection in peopleand on snail control in temporary pools are discussed. The growth and demography of the freshwater snail Biomphalariapfeifferi, an intermediate host of the parasitic worm Schistosomamansoni in Eastern Zaire, were investigated in the laboratoryunder two conditions of crowding. Both individual and populationgrowth were depressed by crowding. Crowding reduced growth rateand all the variables and parameters related to reproduction(fecundity, instantaneous birth rate, net reproduction rate),but did not affect maximum size, survivorship, instantaneousdeath rate and life expectancy. The mechanism involved in theseeffects is likely to be exploitation competition for especiallyprofitable food items such as diatoms. (Received 10 November 1986;  相似文献

Helisoma duryi is a planorbid snail that has been proposed as biological control agent against intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis. When the population density of this species is increased from 200 to 25 ml per snail in containers of constant volume (i.e. 200 ml) growth decreases. Whereas the single snails (i.e. 200 ml/snail) laid no egg masses, egg-laying in the other groups decreased with increasing density. When four snails were kept in various volumes of water giving the same population densities as above both growth and egg-laying decreased with increasing density. Cross-breeding experiments between an albino and a pigmented strain of H. duryi showed that the albino character is inherited as a recessive autosomal character, cross-fertilization appears to be the only mode of reproduction in H. duryi, stored foreign sperm remains viable for up to five months and stored sperm can survive when snails are aestivating or starving. The implications of the present findings for the use of H. duryi in biological control are discussed.  相似文献

Biological control of the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis by means of the introduction of a competitor snail Helisoma duryi has been suggested. In the present laboratory studies the allometric size-weight relationships of H. duryi and Biomphalaria camerunensis were investigated in order to get a tool for estimating the biomass and dry-weight of snails.Competition experiments were conducted and the results showed a marked inhibition of growth and reproduction of B. camerunensis. No conclusions about the competitive interactions were drawn from the present results but experiments are established to elucidate these mechanisms.  相似文献

Allozyme electrophoresis, ploidy level, and, to a lesser extent,anatomy and shell morphology were used to characterize snailsof the Bulinus truncatus/tropicus complex in Cameroon. Starchgel electrophoresis revealed no intrapopulation variation within20 populations examined for 14 allozyme loci in 12 enzyme systems.Interpopulation differences in allozyme patterns were used todivide the populations studied into five groups. Each groupis distinguished by a unique combination of zymograms for hydroxybutyratedehydrogenase and isocitrate dehydrogenase. Four of these groupsare tetraploids and are identified as B. truncatus. Populationsof the most commonly found B. truncatus group are generallyaphallic, are frequently associated with transmission of S.haematobium, and generally occur at altitudes below 800 m abovesea-level. Populations of B. truncatus belonging to the otherthree groups are usually euphallic, not associated with S. haematobiumtransmision, and generally occur at altitudes above 1000 m.These four groups may represent distinct biotypes of B. truncatus.Populations belonging to the fifth group are diploid, euphallic,not associated with S. haematobium transmission, and occur inhabitats above 1000 m. This is the first confirmed report ofdiploid B. truncatus/tropicus-complex snails from this regionof Africa. Biological control of the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis by means of the introduction oa a competitor snail Helisoma duryi has been suggested. The effect of conditioning by Biomphalaria camerunensis and H. duryi respectively on growth and egg laying capacity of B. camerunensis and on the hatchability of B. camerunensis egg masses was compared. No differences were found besides an indication of a growth promoting effect of B. camerunensis conditioning. B. camerunensis egg masses were found to be much more sensitive to mechanical interference from snails than were H. duryi egg masses. Both juvenile and adult H. duryi caused a great reduction in the number of B. camerunensis egg masses and adult B. camerunensis showed a great tendency to destroy its own egg masses. Newly hatched B. camerunensis appeared to be destroyed to a greater extent by adult H. duryi than by adult B. camerunensis.  相似文献

Studies in recent years on chromosome number in freshwater snailsbelonging to the Bulinus truncatus/tropicus complex demonstratedthe occurrence in Kenya of one diploid species, B. tropicus,and 2 tetraploid species, B. truncatus and B. permembranaceus.Further observations are now described on the morphologies ofthe tetraploid species, and their distributions. Observations were made on B. truncatus from 26 localities (11newly reported) and B. permembranaceus from 26 localities (7newly reported), in respect of chromosome number, egg proteins,enzymes (5 systems), shell (10 variables measured), male genitalsystem (normal or aphallic) and radula (1st lateral tooth, sizeand mesocone shape). B. permembranaceus differs most clearly from B. truncatus inegg proteins, enzyme-loci and in lacking aphallic individuals.Mesocone shape is generally less angular in B. permembranaceus.The shell of B. permembranaceus grows larger, has the columellamore commonly concave and its spire is proportionally higherand more acute. To distinguish these tetraploid species fromthe partly sympatric B. tropicus, observations on chromosomenumber and biochemical characters are necessary. The tetraploids are allopatric, B. truncatus being found rarelyas high as 1900 m altitude, whereas B. permembranaceus occupiesthe altitude range 1940–2760 m. B. truncatus may be expandingits distribution in Kenya in man-made waterbodies, while B.permembranaceus possibly is restricted by adaptation to coolconditions and by interaction with B. tropicus. Uniparental reproduction in the tetraploid hermaphrodite speciesBulinus truncatus has been suggested to occur via self-fertilization,on the basis of cytological and genetic studies. However, recentanalyses of population genetic structure by protein electrophoresisindicated the occurrence of multi-banded phenotypes referredto as ‘fixed hetero-zygosity’. Although intrapopulationand geographical variation of multibanded phenotypes occur,many populations bear only one type of such patterns. This ledto the suggestion that parthenogenesis may well be the matingsyste in B. truncatus. However, such fixed heterozygosity patternsare expected in some tetraploid species in which double disomicinheritance of alleles occurs. It is therefore not possibleto determine from population genetic structure analysis alonewhether segregation occurs or not. Here, we investigate thestability of such patterns over one generation of uniparentalreproduction among four populations. We also present resultsof crossing experiments between individuals from two populations,using two diagnostic loci to analyse their offspring. Our resultsclearly indicate Mendelian segregation of alleles, and confirmsexual reproduction by self-fertilization and cross-fertilization.We interpret the multibanded patterns observed in populationsas the product of both diploid loci of the tetraploid genomewhen they are monomorphic for different alleles. Interference and resource competition by adults inhibited growthrates of conspecific juveniles of the land snail species Mesodonthyroidus and Neohelix albolabris in separate field and laboratoryexperiments, but not in laboratory experiments on Anguispiraalternata. In 1 m2 field cages at near-natural densities underambient food and water conditions, juvenile M. thyroidus apparentlycompeted with adults for food or water or both resources, growingmore slowly when living with two conspecific adults, but beingunaffected by adult presence when food and water were augmented.Neohelix albolabris juveniles were similarly unaffected in fieldcages by presence of two adults when food and water were augmented.In contrast, interference, not resource competition, apparentlyexplained growth inhibition in laboratory cages at densitiesconsiderably greater than natural densities, with non-limitingfood and moisture; both M. thyroidus and N. albolabris juvenilesgrew more slowly as conspecific adult number increased fromzero to three. Salinity causes physiological and morphological changes in plantsand calcium can mitigate many of these effects. In this study,the effects of salinity (75 mol m–3 NaCl) with or withoutsupplemental Ca (10 mol m–3) on the kinetics of maize(Zea mays L.) leaf elongation were examined using Linear VariableDifferential Transformers (LVDTs). Short-term growth responsesof two cultivars (Dekalb hybrid XL75 and Pioneer hybrid 3906)differing in salt tolerance were compared. Salinity caused animmediate reduction in the leaf elongation rate (LER). Within2 h, elongation rates had increased and reached new steady rates.Significant differences between salinity treatments with highand low Ca could be detected within the first 2 h after impositionof salinity for Dekalb hybrid XL75, but not for Pioneer hybrid3906. After 24 h, distinct differences for both cultivars weredetected. Dekalb hybrid XL75, a Na-includer, was more salt-sensitiveand responsive to supplemental Ca (10 mol m–3) than Pioneerhybrid 3906, a Na-excluder. Turgor was not reduced 24 h aftersalinization because there was complete osmotic adjustment inthe elongation zone of the leaves. Analysis of the growth parameterslimiting LER indicated that the yield threshold (Y) was increasedfor salt-stressed plants. In addition, both the cell wall extensibilityand hydraulic conductance were reduced 24 h after salinization.Supplemental Ca increased LER of salt-stressed plants by increasinghydraulic conductance. The differences in LER of the two cultivarsunder saline conditions was attributed to differences in theincrease of Y caused by salinity. The effects of food density on competition between Bosmina longirostris and Bosmina fatalis from Lake Kasumigaura were examined in the laboratory. When the animals were reared with a high concentration of Chlorella, B. fatalis, which is slightly larger than B. longirostris in body length, had larger brood sizes and a higher rate of population growth than B. longirostris. When the species were reared together at high food density, B. fatalis overcame B. longirostris. But B. longirostris won the competition at low food density.The effects of Microcystis on the competition were also examined. When the two species of Bosmina were reared in a mixture of Chlorella and Microcystis, the populations of both species hardly increased, although individual B fatalis showed slightly better individual growth and reproduction than B. longirostris. Decomposed Microcystis, however, was utilized well by both species.In Lake Kasumigaura, the decomposition of abundant Microcystis seemed to raise the food level, favouring B. fatalis over B. longirostris.  相似文献

Daphnia magna were reared in environments with different concentrationsof food and dissolved oxygen, and their life history characteristicsand filter-screen areas were analyzed. Both low food concentrationand low oxygen concentration degraded Daphnia fitness (as measuredby individual growth and reproduction), and synergism was detectedstatistically for the effects of the two factors together. Lowfood concentration induced the development of large filter screensin Daphnia, but this development was suppressed by low oxygenconcentration, suggesting that low oxygen concentration reducesthe filtering rate of Daphnia in a food-limited environment.Therefore, energy uptake by Daphnia seems to be reduced by foodshortages and oxygen deficiencies jointly, and this reductionin energy uptake may be a possible mechanism causing the synergisticeffects of the two environmental stresses on the life historyof Daphnia.  相似文献

为了评估取食含重金属铜饲料对棕尾别麻蝇Boettcherisca peregrine亲代及子代的生长发育与繁殖的影响,在室内给棕尾别麻蝇初产幼虫饲喂含不同浓度(200, 400,800和1 600 µg/g)Cu2+的饲料直至化蛹,并对亲代和子代的生长发育和繁殖有关指标进行了观察和分析。结果表明:低浓度的Cu2+(200 µg/g)对其体重和体长起促进作用,但对幼虫历期、化蛹率、蛹历期、羽化率、性比、交配率和产仔量无显著作用;较高浓度的Cu2+ 则有抑制作用,且Cu2+处理浓度越高,亲代幼虫、蛹和雌雄成虫的体重越轻,幼虫和蛹的体长越短,化蛹率、羽化率、交配率和产仔量越低,幼虫历期和蛹期越长,成虫寿命越短。但Cu2+处理对成虫性比则无显著的影响。相比之下,经Cu2+处理后雌虫所产的子代若不再经Cu2+处理,其子代生存、生长发育与繁殖则基本不受影响,说明Cu2+对亲代的影响不能遗传至子代。此外,还探讨了该蝇亲代与子代体内Cu2+含量在其变态过程中的变化。  相似文献

In a detailed study of the factors which control spray retentionby the shoot, five species with markedly different morphologicalcharacteristics have been examined (Helianthus annuus, Brassicaatha, Linum usitatisrnnwn, Hordeum vulgare, and Pisum sativum).The amount of spray retained, expressed as volume per unit weightof shoot or unit leaf area, is dependent on the stage of developmentof each species, the volume of spray applied, and the surfacetension of the spray solution. The interrelationships betweenthese factors are complex for all the second-order interactionsproved to be highly significant. Under one set of condi tionsthere may be a tenfold difference in retention between two specieswhile under another set the corresponding difference may beas little as twofold. Between a spray output of 14 and 143 ml./m.3 the level of retentionby P. sativum and H. vulgare is linearly related to output butfor H. annuus and B. alba the relationship is curvilinear. Whenthe surface tension is reduced below 40 dynes/cm. retentionby P. sativum and H. vulgare is increased, but for B. alba andH. annuus retention is decreased if the output exceeds 50 ml./m.For a given output, a reduction in the mean droplet size augmentsretention by H. vulgare but not by H. annuus. Differences in retention either between species or between stagesof develop ment are linked with the ratio of leaf area to shootweight, the nature of the leaf surfaces, the angle of incidenceat which the droplets strike the leaf, and localized accumulation.Retention is maximal when the leaf-area ratio is high, the surfacescompletely wetted, and the laminae set in a horizontal plane:once this maximum value is reached any additional spray receivedruns off the shoot. The relationship between retention and the concentration ofthe spray solution required to bring about some standard biologicalresponse has been examined for two groups of compounds—thosewhich are freely translocated (triethanolarnine salts of 2:4-dichloro-,2:4:5-trichloro-, and z-methyl-4-chloro-phenoxyacetic acids)and those which are not (arnrnonium 2:4-dinitro-6-sec-butylphenate).For the first group the equi-effective concentration is inverselyand linearly related to retention since the total amount receivedis of primary importance in determining the inhibition of growth,though the position of the droplets must be taken into account.Placing micro-drops containing the growth regulator on the cotyledonsof L. usitatimmwn inhibits the growth of the shoot less thana spray application of the same amount over the whole shoot:for H. annuus placing the growth regulator on either the firstor second pair of leaves or on the first internode induces moreinhibition of growth than application to the cotyledons. With ammonium dinitro-sec-butylphenate the relationship betweenretention and concentration is also inverse but approximatelylogarithmic for L. usitatisrimum. For some other species thechanges in retention consequent upon a reduction in the surfacetension are not matched by comparable changes in the equi-effectiveconcentration. For B. alba and H. annuus though lowering thesurface tension may decrease retention it may also Himiniahthe concentration because the fall in retention is more thanoffset by a greater penetration of the compound into the shoot. It is concluded that differences in spray retention betweenspecies can play a major role in determining selective actionand the conditions under which this factor may operate mosteffectively are discussed.  相似文献

We tested the influence of different types of food on the fitnessof Daphnia longispina during a period of poor resources by comparingthe growth and reproduction of individuals fed on differentdiets. When Daphnia were under starvation conditions, both dissolvedorganic carbon and metabolic products enhanced bacterial growth,and the cladoceran produced 15 neonates and survived for the55 days of experiment. In the natural water, the edible foodconsisted essentially of bacteria and heterotrophic flagellates,which enabled the cladoceran to grow and reproduce. In waterenriched with Cryptomonas (an alga) or Chilomonas (a heterotrophicflagellate), the daphnid growth rates increased considerablyfrom generation to generation, but later in the time courseof the experiment with Chilomonas than with Cryptomonas. Thisalga enhanced the phosphorus:carbon ratio. The primiparous daphnidsfed with Cryptomonas were smaller than those fed with the heterotrophicflagellate and enrichment with the heterotrophic flagellatealso enhanced reproduction. In Lake Tazenat, when the algalbiomass was insufficient to support the Daphnia life cycle,the heterotrophic organisms were an essential food source. Whenfeeding essentially on bacteria, Daphnia has the capacity togrow and reproduce at very low food concentrations, and thisis important in determining its fitness under competitive conditions.  相似文献

Summary

Castration of Helisoma duryi disturbs the balance between growth and reproduction in favour of growth, as is evidenced by the stimulation of body and shell growth and reduction in egg mass production when compared with sham operated controls. Female accessory sex organ wet weight is increased in castrated and virgin snails. Male accessory sex organ wet weight is unaffected and female accessory sex organ wet weight is reduced by dorsal body ablation, suggesting that growth of differentiated female accessory sex organs is stimulated by the endocrine dorsal bodies. Albumen gland synthetic activity is inhibited in the absence of a functioning gonad. This inhibition may be due partly to the accumulation of secretory products within the glands and partly to the inactivation of the endocrine dorsal bodies and neurosecretory caudodorsal cells in the cerebral ganglia. The circulating levels of the vitellogenic protein ferritin are reduced by castration, and increased by injection and implantation of active gonadal tissue into castrates. This may be due to an indirect effect of gonadal factor (s) on the extragonadal synthesis of ferritin.  相似文献
