Twenty eight species of Ixodidae have been found on man in South America (21 Amblyomma, 1 Boophilus, 2 Dermacentor, 2 Haemaphysalis, 1 Ixodes and 1 Rhipicephalus species). Most of them are rarely found on man. However, three species frequently parasitize humans in restricted areas of Argentina (A. neumanni reported from 46 localities), Uruguay (A. triste from 21 sites) and Argentina–Brazil (A. parvum from 27 localities). The most widespread ticks are A. cajennense (134 localities in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela), A. ovale (37 localities in Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela) and A. oblongoguttatum (28 sites in Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela). Amblyomma aureolatum (18 localities in Argentina, Brazil, French Guiana and Paraguay), A. cajennense, and A. triste are vectors of rickettsioses to man in South America. A better understanding of the respective roles of these and other tick species in transmitting pathogens to humans will require further local investigations. Amblyomma ticks should be the main subjects of these studies followed by species of Boophilus, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis and Rhipicephalus species. In contrast with North America, Europe and Asia, ticks of the genus Ixodes do not appear to be major players in transmitting diseases to human. Indeed, there is only one record of an Ixodes collected while feeding on man for all South America. 相似文献

Amblyomma triste is the most prevalent tick species reported in human tick bites in Uruguay and has been found to be infected with Rickettsia parkeri, but no other microorganisms have been reported from this tick. A sample of 254 adults of A. triste was collected by flagging on vegetation in suburban areas in southern Uruguay. Pools of five ticks were assembled and a screening
for the DNA from the resulting 51 pools was realized by PCR assays using primers for amplifying a fragment of 16S rRNA gene
for members of Anaplasmataceae. Seventeen pools were positive (33%) and the sequenciation of the gene fragment amplified revealed
the presence of a putative new Alpha-Proteobacterium (denominated Atri-uru). The phylogenetic analysis showed that this microorganism
is closely related to the symbiont of I. ricinus denominated ‘Candidatus Midichloria
mitochondrii’ and other associated organisms. This rickettsial symbiont of ticks is included in a recent new clade proposed for the Alpha
subclass of the Proteobacteria. The discovery of this bacterium in A. triste is the first evidence of this group of Rickettsiales detected in the Genus Amblyomma, and the first record in South America. Also, in two of 17 positive samples a Gamma-Proteobacterium related to Francisella-like organisms was detected. 相似文献

While conducting projects on ticks from deer and on tick ecology in animal trails in an Atlantic rainforest reserve in Southeastern Brazil, researchers of our group were bitten by ticks several times. Some of these episodes were recorded. Three species of adult ticks attached to humans: Amblyomma brasiliense Aragão, Amblyomma incisum Neumann, and Amblyomma ovale Koch. Eight nymphal attachments with engorgement on humans were recorded. From these, six molted to adults of A. incisum, one to an adult of A. brasiliense, and one had an anomalous molting, therefore the adult tick could not be properly identified. Local reactions to tick attachment varied among individual hosts from almost imperceptible to intense. Especially itching, but hyperemia and swelling as well, were prominent features of the reaction. Overall it can be affirmed that human beings can be a physiologically suitable host species for ticks in the Atlantic rainforest and that itching was an important if not the major component of the resistance to tick bite. 相似文献

Herbertia crosae (Iridaceae) is described from the stony grasslands of northwestern Uruguay. The new species resemblesHerbertia lahue but can be easily distinguished by the narrower leaves, slender habit, the smaller pale lilac flowers, the presence of yellow
spots at the base of the tepals, the red, adpressed hairs along the filament column, the presence of filaments free at the
apex, the channeled style arm, the recurved secondary divisions of the style arm, and the smaller fruits. A key to the species
of the genus is provided in which five species are now recognized. 相似文献

This study describes the seasonal distribution of larvae, nymph, and adult life stages for 3 species of ixodid ticks collected by tick drag and sweep methods from various habitats in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Grasses less than 0.5 m in height, including herbaceous and crawling vegetation, and deciduous, conifer, and mixed forests with abundant leaf/needle litter were surveyed at United States (US) and ROK operated military training sites and privately owned lands near the demilitarized zone from April-October, 2004 and 2005. Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann adults and nymphs were more frequently collected from April-August, while those of Haemaphysalis flava Neumann and Ixodes nipponensis Kitaoka and Saito were collected more frequently from April-July and again during October. H. longicornis was the most frequently collected tick in grass habitats (98.9%), while H. flava was more frequently collected in deciduous (60.2%) and conifer (57.4%) forest habitats. While more H. flava (54.1%) were collected in mixed forest habitats than H. longicornis (35.2%), the differences were not significant. I. nipponensis was more frequently collected from conifer (mean 8.8) compared to deciduous (3.2) and mixed (2.4) forests. 相似文献

The pathogenicity of five species of entomopathogenic fungi (Deuteromycetes, species: Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Metarhizium flavoviride, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and Verticillium lecanii ) to the various developmental stages of Boophilus annulatus ticks was compared under laboratory conditions. M. anisopliae and B. bassiana strains were most virulent to engorged females and caused 85-100% mortality within 7-10 days post-inoculation (PI). The highest mortality of engorged females caused by other fungi reached only 25-60%. All tested fungi prevented or reduced the egg laying capability of the ticks several days before their death. Females surviving after treatment with the most virulent M. anisopliae strain (Ma-7) reached only 7-8% of their egg laying capacity as compared with the control. Other fungi caused a reduction of the weight of laid eggs by 35.4-80.8% as compared with untreated females. Only M. anisopliae and B. bassiana strains caused 70-98% mortality of the treated eggs. Unfed larvae of Boophilus annulatus were sensitive to M. anisopliae and M. flavoviride strains. The Ma-7 strain was most virulent to unfed larvae, with a mortality rate of 80.4% at a concentration of 1 ×107 spores ml -1 and 100% mortality at a concentration of 1 ×108 spores ml -1 . 相似文献

Biological data of three generations of Amblyomma tigrinum in the laboratory are reported and the suitability of different host species for immature ticks are compared. Grouping the
three generations, infestations by both the larval and nymphal stages were performed on chickens (Gallus gallus), wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus), rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus),wild mice (Calomys callosus), dogs (Canis familiaris) and opossums (Didelphis albiventris). Only dogs were used for infestations by adult ticks. Tick developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27°C and
RH 90%. The proportion of engorged larvae recovered from chickens (21.7% of the exposed larvae) was significantly larger (p<0.001) than those from the five mammal species used in the infestations (maximum of 3.1%). A significant larger (p<0.01) proportion of engorged larvae successfully molted after being fed on chickens than on mammal hosts. The proportion
of engorged nymphs recovered from chickens (28.8% of the exposed nymphs) was significantly larger (p<0.001) than those from mammal hosts (range: 0–2.1%). Larvae showed similar feeding periods on exposure to different host
species, except for those larvae fed on C. callosus, which showed significantly longer (p<0.001) feeding periods. Engorged larvae detachment peaked on the 5th feeding day, followed by the 6th day, on all hosts except for C. callosus. Larval premolt periods were similar for engorged ticks exposed to different host species, except for larvae fed on dogs,
which showed significantly longer (p<0.001) premolt periods. Host detachment of engorged nymphs peaked on the 6th feeding day on chickens. Although nymphal detachment on rats peaked on the 8th day, only 15 nymphs were recovered from this host species. In a sample of 144 F3 nymphs fed on chickens no significant difference (p>0.10) was found between the feeding or premolt periods of 82 males and 62 females, but female nymphs were significantly heavier
(p<0.005) than male nymphs. Sixteen engorged females (61.5% of the exposed ticks) were recovered after being fed on dogs, and
all these females laid viable eggs. Chickens, the only avian host, were the most suitable host when compared with the five
mammal species. Dogs were demonstrated to be a suitable host for adults of A. tigrinum, which is consistent with, several reports of adult A. tigrinum ticks parasitizing dogs in different areas of South America.
Our results reinforce that in these same areas avian species are the major hosts for immature stages of this tick species.

The present paper reports the occurrence of natural co-infection of Babesia caballi and Encephalitozoon-like microsporidia in the tick Anocentor nitens. Engorged females of ticks, collected from a naturally B. caballi-infected horse, were incubated at 27 degrees C and relative humidity over 83%. After a 6-day incubation period, Giemsa-stained smears prepared from hemolymph were examined microscopically under oil immersion. B. caballi infected ticks were dissected and samples of midgut tissue were examined by transmission electron microscopy, through which free sporokinetes were seen in the cytoplasm of gut epithelial cells. In addition, Encephalitozoon-like microsporidia were observed inside the parasitophorous vacuoles in the same cell in which sporokinetes of B. caballi were found and also in some neighbour cells. They presented different morphological stages, suggesting a sequential phases of development. 相似文献

Tetradenia riparia (Lamiaceae) is a well-known herbal medicine with a variety of useful properties, including its acaricidal effect. This experiment was carried out to study the bioacaricidal activity of T. riparia essential oil (EO) against engorged females of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari; Ixodidae). For this purpose, nine serial concentrations (12.50%, 6.25%, 3.75%, 1.80%, 0.90%, 0.45%, 0.22%, 0.11%, and 0.056% w/v) of T. riparia were used for the adult immersion test (AIT). For the larval packet test (LPT), we used 14 serial concentrations (100.00%, 50.00%, 25.00%, 12.50%, 6.25%, 3.65%, 1.82%, 0.91%, 0.45%, 0.228%, 0.114%, 0.057%, 0.028%, and 0.014% w/v). The results for AIT showed 100.00% and 2.05% mortality, 19.00 and 90.20% for the total number of eggs, egg-laying inhibition of 0.00% and 90.20%, hatchability inhibition of 0.00% and 70.23%, and product effectiveness of 100.00% and 2.89%, respectively. The AIT indicated that the LC50 and LC99.9, calculated using the Probit test, were for mortality (%) 0.534 g/mL (0.436–0.632) and 1.552 g/mL (1.183–1.92); for total number of eggs were 0.449 g/mL (0.339–0.558) and 1.76 g/mL (1.27–2.248); and for hatchability inhibition were 0.114 g/mL (0.0–0.31) and 2.462 g/mL (1.501–3.422), respectively. Larvae between 14 and 21 days old were fasted and placed in each envelope. Bioassays were performed at 27° ± 1 °C, RH ? 80%. Larval mortality was observed 24 h after treatment and showed 10.60–100% mortality in the LPT bioassay. The LPT showed that the LC50 and LC99.9 were 1.222 g/mL (0.655–1.788) and 11.382 g/mL (7.84–14.91), respectively. A positive correlation between T. riparia EO concentration and tick control, was observed by the strong acaricidal effects against R. (B.) microplus, and the mortality rate of ticks was dose-dependent. Our results showed that T. riparia is a promising candidate as an acaricide against resistant strains of R. (B.) microplus. 相似文献

From January 2002 to December 2004, 152 ticks were collected from 40 wild birds recovered in Santo André Natural Reserve and Monsanto Forestal Park, Portugal mainland. Five ticks species were identified from 22 species of birds, and new host record were provided for some species. In addition, 32 (21%) ticks were screened by PCR to detect infections with agents belonging to order Rickettsiales: Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, and Rickettsia spp. PCR amplicons were obtained in 5 (15.6%) tick samples. Rickettsia DNA exhibiting gltA sequences similar to those of Rickettsia aeschilimannii, R. helvetica and R. massiliae were identified in Hyalomma marginatum, Ixodes ventalloi and in Rhipicephalus turanicus, respectively. This is the first report of rickettsiae infections in ticks collected from wild birds in Portugal. Giving the results presented above wild birds play an important role in the maintenance and dissemination of several tick species and associated rickettsiae. 相似文献

This is the first report of North American bullfrogs, Lithobates catesbeianus (=Rana catesbeiana), invasion in Uruguay. This Anura was introduced for farming proposes in 1987, but at present most of the farms are closed.
At one of these closed farms, located at Rincón de Pando, Canelones, we report the occurrence of a feral population of L. catesbeianus. This invasion point is at an early stage and restricted to one or two ponds. We also report the effects of L. catesbeianus invasion in the community structure. This includes species composition and species size structure. In this system bullfrog
tadpoles constitute a very important proportion of the present biomass. Bullfrog tadpoles appear to be displacing native amphibians
and having some type of positive interaction with fishes. At the invaded system we found more fish species and larger sizes
of the shared fish species. We analyze the involved risks of this invasion, the ecological impact by predation, the competition
and habitat modification, and the potential of bullfrog to act as pathogens vector. We also recommend taking measures in order
to avoid the expansion of this population. There is also the need of studies to search for new invasion points in Uruguay,
especially where bullfrog farms were located. 相似文献

We report biological data of two generations of Amblyomma triste in laboratory and compared the suitability of different host species. Infestations by larval and nymphal stages were performed
on guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), chickens (Gallus gallus), rats (Rattus norvegicus), rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), wild mice (Calomys callosus), dogs (Canis familiaris) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Infestations by adult ticks were performed on dogs, capybaras and rabbits. Tick developmental periods were observed in
an incubator at 27 °C and RH 90%. Guinea pigs were the most suitable hosts for larvae and nymphs, followed by chickens. The
remaining host species were less suitable for immature ticks as fewer engorged ticks were recovered from them. Mean larval
feeding periods varied from 3.8 to 4.7 d between different host species. Mean larval premolt periods ranged from 8.9 to 10.4
d. Nymphal mean feeding periods varied from 4.2 to 6.2 d for ticks fed on different host species. Premolt period of male nymphs
(mean: 15.4 d) was significantly longer than that of female nymphs (14.7 d). Female nymphs were significantly heavier than
male nymphs. The overall sex ratio of the adult ticks emerged from nymphs was 0.9:1 (M:F). Capybaras were the most suitable
host for the tick adult stage as significantly more engorged females were recovered from them and these females were significantly
heavier than those recovered from dogs or rabbits. The life cycle of A. triste in laboratory could be completed in an average period of 155 d. The potential role of guinea pigs, birds and capybaras, as
hosts for A. triste in nature, is discussed.

Ticks (Ixodoidea) likely transmit the greatest variety of human and animal pathogens of any arthropod vector. Despite their medical significance little data is available about the messenger molecules in the central nervous system that coordinate all physiological processes in these animals, including behaviour. In our study, we performed the first comprehensive neuropeptidomic analysis of a tick species by using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Specifically we analyzed the neuropeptides in the synganglion of Ixodes scapularis. The forthcoming sequence of the genome of this species will represent the first genomic analysis of a member of the large subphylum Chelicerata. For our approach we used information from predicted neuropeptide precursor sequences found in EST databases [Christie, AE. Neuropeptide discovery in Ixodoidea: an in silico investigation using publicly accessible expressed sequence tags. Gen Comp Endocrinol 2008;157:174–185] as well as data obtained by complete de novo sequencing. The direct tissue profiling yielded 20 neuropeptides from 12 neuropeptide precursors. The sequences of these neuropeptides are not as unique as predicted; a comparison with the peptidome of other invertebrates shows a close relationship with insect neuropeptides. This work will provide a resource for studying tick neurobiology and will hopefully also help to identify novel targets for tick and tick-borne disease control. 相似文献

Due to the increased trade in exotic reptiles, many of which are infested with ticks of various genera, there is an increased
risk of exotic ticks and pathogens being introduced and potentially becoming established in new geographical areas. Despite
the number and variety of tick species collected from reptiles, their role in the maintenance of pathogens and transmission
to humans has not been fully investigated for all species. The potential public health risks to the United Kingdom have been
examined through a preliminary study involving the collection and identification of exotic tick species imported via the reptile
trade. Reptiles imported into Heathrow Airport, London (July 2003–October 2004) were carefully examined for ectoparasites.
Five species of tick were collected: Aponomma exornatum, Ap. latum, Amblyomma rotundatum, Am. dissimile and Am. nuttalli. This is the first report of Am. dissimile identified from an interception at Heathrow airport. The potential for establishment of exotic ticks in the UK and the public
health risks are discussed.

Emerging tick-borne diseases of humans and animals have occurred frequently during the past 30 years. These disease outbreaks appear to result from changes in the distribution of tick and vertebrate hosts, and the introduction of humans and domestic animals into tick–pathogen–wildlife cycles. Use of molecular technologies now available for identification of pathogens in ticks can provide valuable information that allows for risk analysis of emerging tick-borne diseases. In this study, the prevalence of selected pathogens in ticks collected in six locations in central Spain from the major wild ungulate species, European wild boar (Sus scrofa) and Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus), was determined by PCR. Tick species collected included Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor marginatus, Rhipicephalus bursa and Hyalomma m. marginatum. Pathogens identified in ticks included piroplasmids, Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp. and Rickettsia spp. Piroplasmids were identified in all tick species except I. ricinus. Ehrlichia spp. were detected in all tick species and collection locations, while Rickettsia spp., which proved to be R. slovaca and a recently identified Rickettsia sp. DnS28, were identified only in D. marginatus. A. marginale and A. phagocytophilum were detected in D. marginatus, R. bursa and Hy. m. marginatum. Concurrent infections of these pathogens were frequently observed in ticks. Notably, A. phagocytophilum, which is infective for a broad host range that includes humans and domestic and wild animals, was identified in ticks from all collection locations. The variety of ticks and tick-borne pathogens demonstrated in this study suggests a risk in central Spain for the emergence of tick-borne diseases in humans and domestic animals. 相似文献

The Effect of Male Ticks on the Feeding Performance of Immature Stages of Rhipicephalus Sanguineus and Amblyomma Americanum (Acari: Ixodidae) 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A unique group of immunoglobulin-binding proteins (IGBPs), produced by ixodid male ticks during the latter half of their prolonged feeding period, improves the feeding performance of co-feeding females. As a follow-up to this observation, we investigated whether male tick feeding also affects the feeding of other developmental stages. Immature stages of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreeille) and Amblyomma americanum (L.) were fed on rabbits in the presence or absence of conspecific males. The mean weight of larvae and nymphs of both species that fed around males and detached from the host on the first day of dropping was significantly higher than when the immature ticks fed on rabbits in the absence of males. However, larvae of both species and nymphs of R. sanguineus that fed slower and detached on the second day of dropping did not show significant differences in weight. A similar pattern was observed for A. americanum nymphs although, unlike R. sanguineus, the presence of males also influenced the feeding performance of the nymphs that fed slowly and detached on the second day of drop-off. The improved feeding performance demonstrated by immature ticks in the presence of males may be due to immunomodulatory saliva proteins, such as immunoglobulin-binding proteins (IGBPs) that are introduced into the co-feeding site. The results are considered in relation to the distribution of ixodid tick species on their natural hosts. 相似文献
