This paper describes size composition, morphometric, and reproductive parameters of the summer generation of the amphipod
Ischyrocerus anguipes (Krǿyer, 1838) associated with the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus (Tilesius, 1815) in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay (southern Barents Sea, Russia). In summer 2004–2007, prevalence and mean number
of I. anguipes per host were 15.0% and 6.9 ± 1.1 specimens, respectively. The majority of amphipods were found on the host carapace (47.4%)
and the limbs (43.9%). High infestation indices and absence of negative impacts for the host indicate that I. anguipes is a facultative commensal of the red king crab. The amphipods sex ratio was significantly biased toward females (F:M = 2:1).
Females had a greater size than males. The size at 50% maturity of I. anguipes females was estimated to be 3.37 mm. The number of eggs laid is linearly correlated with the size of a female. Some differences
in biological features of symbiotic and free-living amphipods (data obtained in 1940–1950) may be explained by climatic changes
in the Barents Sea or advantages of living on the crab. 相似文献

Large invasive predators like the king crab, Paralithodes camtschaticus, deserve particular attention due to their potential for catastrophic ecological impact on recipient communities. Conspicuous,
epibenthic prey species, such as the slow growing commercial scallop Chlamys islandica, are particularly exposed to the risk of local extinction. A research program integrating experiments and field monitoring
is attempting to predict and track the impact of invasive king crab on scallop beds and associated fauna along the north Norwegian
coast. The claw gape of the crab shows no limitations in handling the flat-bodied scallop. However, the potential impact of
the crab on scallop may depend on the availability of other calcified prey associated with scallop beds, such as the sea star,
sea urchin, and blue mussel, all species recorded in the diet of P. camtschaticus. To address this issue, a laboratory experiment on foraging behaviour of P. camtschaticus was conducted. The experimental results show that all size classes of red king crab prefer scallops, but small juveniles
and medium sized crabs demonstrate active selection for starfish (Asterias rubens) that equals or surpasses the electivity of the large crab. The selection of sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) is slightly positive or neutral for the three crab size classes. These results suggest that scallop beds with a rich associated
fauna are less vulnerable to red king crabs predation and possibly more resilient than beds with few associated species. Also,
crab size distribution is likely relevant for invasion impact, with increasing abundance of small and medium sized crabs being
detrimental for alternative calcified prey associated with scallop beds. Successive stages of crab invasion will see an acceleration
of scallop mortality rates associated with (i) decreasing availability of alternative prey, due to protracted predation pressure
intensified by recruitment of juvenile crabs, and (ii) increased number of large crabs. Estimates of crab density and intake
rates suggest that the accelerated loss rates will eventually endanger scallop beds persistence. 相似文献

Based on materials from trawling (2002–2005) and plankton (2004–2006) surveys, some problems of the reproduction biology of the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus (Tilesius, 1815) population from Peter the Great Bay are considered. It was shown that the width of the carapace varied from 105 to 190 mm in female red king crabs with eggs; 50% of the females reached maturity with a carapace width of 112.8 mm. The average individual absolute fecundity of females was 200000 (114000–296000) eggs. A direct linear correlation between fecundity and female carapace width was recorded. The zoeas I–IV of the red king crab occurred in the plankton from the middle of April up to the end of the second decade of May at water temperatures from 2.8 up to 9.3°C. The periods of larval occurrence in plankton in various years correlated with the water temperature, with a temperature decrease, the duration of the pelagic period increased. No direct correlation was revealed between the phytoplankton bloom and larval release. The density of red king crab larvae in Peter the Great Bay did not exceed 0.02–13.3 spec./m3. The maximum concentration of zoeas was recorded in the central part of Ussuriysky Bay. 相似文献

The intentional introduction of red king crab, Paralithodes camtschatica (Tilesius, 1815) in the Barents Sea represent one of a few successful cases and one that now supports a commercial fishery.
Introductions of alien species into new environments are often associated with genetic bottlenecks, which cause a reduction
in the genetic variation, and this could be important for the spreading potential of the species in the Atlantic Ocean. Red
king crab samples collected in the Varangerfjord located on the Barents Sea (northern Norway) were compared with reference
crab samples collected from the Bering Sea and Kamchatka regions in the Pacific Ocean. All samples were screened for eleven
microsatellite loci, based on the development of species-specific primers. The observed number of alleles per locus was similar,
and no reduction in genetic variation, including gene diversity and allelic richness, was detected between the Varangerfjord
sample and the reference sample from Okhotsk Sea near Kamchatka, indicating no genetic bottlenecking at least for the microsatellite
loci investigated. The same results were found in comparison with the sample from Bering Sea. The level of genetic differentiation
among the samples, measured as overall F
ST
across all loci, was relatively low (0.0238) with a range of 0.0035–0.1000 for the various loci investigated. The largest
pairwise F
ST
values were found between the Bering Sea and Varangerfjord/Barents Sea samples, with a value of 0.0194 across all loci tested.
The lowest value (0.0101) was found between the Varangerfjord and Kamchatka samples. Genetic differentiation based on exact
tests on allele frequencies revealed highly significant differences between all pairwise comparisons. The high level of genetic
variation found in the Varangerfjord/Barents Sea sample could be of significance with respect to further spreading of the
species to other regions in the North Atlantic Ocean. 相似文献

The red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) was introduced in the Barents Sea in the 1960s and soon established a viable population. Proper management and exploitation
of the Barents Sea king crab stock require better understanding of the spatial dynamics at different scales. This study examines
the small-scale movement patterns of seven adult male crabs tracked for a period of up to one month from mid July to mid August
at 150 m depth in a semi-enclosed fjord on the Russo-Norwegian border. The crabs were tagged with acoustic transmitters and
their movements monitored with an acoustic positioning system. Low walking speeds (<0.01 m s−1) were most frequent but the crabs could move at a maximum speed of 0.15 m s−1 and walk an actual distance of up to 270 m over a period of one hour. However, the crabs usually moved within a relatively
restricted area with mean hourly longest rectilinear distance varying from 26 to 64 m. The crabs alternated between periods
of low and high activity, which could reflect feeding in and movements between food patches. The lack of a diel activity rhythm
may be due to high light levels during the polar summer night, or a chemically mediated food search strategy. 相似文献

We examined levels of limb injury in the red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus at 3 sites in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. High incidences of autotomy were registered at all sites examined averaging 46.6% in Dolgaya Bay (DLB), 42.6% in Yarnyshnaya Bay (YRB) and 45.6% in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay (DZB). These levels were greater than in deep waters of the Barents Sea. Significant inter-annual increases in limb loss rates were observed in DZB. The positive correlation of autotomy frequency with the body size was observed for the females in YRB and DZB. The frequency of autotomy was independent of sex for all sites and size groups except for the crabs with CL > 135 mm in DZB where the females had autotomized limbs more often than the males. The chance of injury was higher for posterior legs. Right-side limbs (especially, claws) were lost more often than left-side limbs. The observed frequency of crabs within limb loss patterns did not differ significantly from the expected levels in P. camtschaticus collected in DLB and in YRB but was significantly different than a frequency expected if limb losses were independent in DZB. Our results suggest that crabs in DZB are more affected by limb-inducing factors than individuals from DLB or YRB. The main factors affecting limb injuries in P. camtschaticus in the coastal Barents Sea are predator pressure (mainly for immature crabs), and illegal fishing and recreational diving (for mature crabs). 相似文献

Epifauna associated with the northern stone crab <Emphasis Type="Italic">Lithodes maia</Emphasis> in the Barents Sea 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Species composition, prevalence, and intensities of species colonizing the northern stone crab Lithodes maia in Dalnezelenetskaya Bay (Barents Sea) were examined. Sixteen species attached to the body surface or the host gills were
identified. The most common associates were hydrozoans (100.0%), especially Obelia longissima, and the amphipods Ischyrocerus commensalis (93.8%). Species composition of the stone crab epifauna was similar to that observed for the Lithodid crab Paralithodes camtschaticus, except that tubular polychaetes Pomatoceros triqueter and Placostegus tridentatus were found only on the surface of the stone crab, while fish leeches Johanssonia arctica occurred on the red king crabs. Differences in percentage of infested hosts, and mean intensities of some associates are
influenced by the conditions of carapace structure and size of both crab species. 相似文献

The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae. 相似文献

Enzyme preparation exhibiting glycolytic activity yielding chitooligosaccharides along with N-acetyl-D-glucosamine was obtained from the red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) hepatopancreas. The results of the analysis confirmed the presence of endo- and exochitinase activities in the preparation. HPLC showed that the hydrolysis products of chitin and chitosan did not contain D(+)-glucosamine, which is indicative of the absence of deacetylase and, apparently, exochitosanase activities. A comparison of the dependence of the enzyme preparation activity on temperature and pH of the incubation medium suggests that chitinase and protease activities are exhibited by different enzymes. 相似文献

Setae on the mouthparts of juvenile and adult red king crabs, Paralithodes camtschaticus (Tilesius, 1815), were studied. A total of seven types of setae have been differentiated; their distribution over the mouthparts was determined. It was established that setules and denticles on the surface of setae show a tendency to shorten and/or disappear as the body grows; the length of the setae decreases relative to the size of the individual; the number of setae of most types increases considerably, forming dense groups of setae. These changes are apparently related to the fact that the effectiveness of the functions that are performed by solitary setae decreases with the growth in the size of an individual; these functions are subsequently assumed by groups of setae. 相似文献

Our study confirms the presence of chitinolytic, chitosanolytic, and deacetylase activities in the hepatopancreas of the red king crab, related to the specific diet of this species. The maximum rate of chitin/chitosan hydrolysis by an enzyme preparation from crab hepatopancreas occurs at 36.5–37.0°C. Two pH optimums have been found for the enzymatic reaction under mildly alkaline and acidic conditions for both exo-and endochitinase activities. The enzyme preparation is most affine to partly deacetylated chitin with an acetylation degree within 40–50%. 相似文献

P transposons belong to the eukaryotic DNA transposons, which are transposed by a cut and paste mechanism using a P-element-coded transposase. They have been detected in Drosophila, and reside as single copies and stable homologous sequences in many vertebrate species. We present the P elements Pcin1, Pcin2 and Pcin3 from Ciona intestinalis, a species of the most primitive chordates, and compare them with those from Ciona savignyi. They showed typical DNA transposon structures, namely terminal inverted repeats and target site duplications. The coding
region of Pcin1 consisted of 13 small exons that could be translated into a P-transposon-homologous protein. C. intestinalis and C. savignyi displayed nearly the same phenotype. However, their P elements were highly divergent and the assumed P transposase from C. intestinalis was more closely related to the transposase from Drosophila melanogaster than to the transposase of C. savignyi. The present study showed that P elements with typical features of transposable DNA elements may be found already at the base of the chordate lineage.

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia. We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. The Australian National Herbarium (CANB) kindly lent herbarium specimens of Eucalyptopsis for examination. Notocactus scopa cv. Soonjung was subjected to in planta Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation with vacuum infiltration, pin-pricking, and a combination of the two methods. The pin-pricking combined with vacuum infiltration (20-30 cmHg for 15 min) resulted in a transformation efficiency of 67-100%, and the expression of the uidA and nptII genes was detected in transformed cactus. The established in planta transformation technique generated a transgenic cactus with higher transformation efficiency, shortened selection process, and stable gene expression via asexual reproduction. All of the results showed that the in planta transformation method utilized in the current study provided an efficient and time-saving procedure for the delivery of genes into the cactus genome, and that this technique can be applied to other asexually reproducing succulent plant species. 相似文献

Three enzyme preparations, two acid and one alkaline RNases, were isolated from the hepatopancreas of the red king crab Paralithodes camtschatica using DEAE-cellulose chromatography and gel chromatography. The alkaline RNase was activated by Mg2+ ions and had a pH optimum of 7.2; the acid RNases, a pH optimum of 5.5. The molecular weight of the alkaline RNase was 19 kDa; two acid RNases, 33 and 70 kDa, respectively. The enzymes exhibited a sufficiently high thermostability (IT50 = 53–55°C) and were strongly inhibited by NaCl (IC50, 0.1–0.25 M). The alkaline RNase exhibited no specificity for heterocyclic bases, whereas the acid RNases hydrolyzed poly(U) and poly(A) at maximum rates. 相似文献

Sex ratio distorting endosymbionts induce reproductive anomalies in their arthropod hosts. They have recently been paid much
attention as firstly texts of evolution of host-symbiont relationships and secondly potential biological control agents to
control arthropod pests. Among such organisms, Wolbachia and Cardinium bacteria are well characterized. This study aims at probing such bacteria in the Osmia community to evaluate their potential utilization to control arthropod pests. Among 17 PCR tested species, Osmia cornifrons and a parasitic fly are infected with Wolbachia and a mite species is infected with Cardinium. Phylogenetic tree analyses suggest that horizontal transfer of the bacteria occurred between phylogenetically distant hosts. 相似文献
