If the distribution of the types of nerve fibers in the various intercostal nerves is taken into consideration, an intercostal nerve segment can be an acceptable donor nerve graft for sensory and/or motor nerve replacements. Zonular fibers are a specific form of extracellular matrix composed mainly of fibrillins. The purpose of this study was to determine which cells secrete fibrillin-1 during development and aging. A specific guinea pig fibrillin-1 mRNA probe was designed and cloned in order to identify fibrillin-secreting cells in guinea pig eye, using in situ hybridization. Immunofluorescence, with a specific guinea pig monoclonal antibody, was used to compare protein levels at different stages from birth to 35 months of age. Electron microscopy and immunolabeling were used to investigate the organization of zonular microfibril bundles. We identified the cells of non-pigmented epithelium of the ciliary body as the main source of fibrillin secreted into the zonule. Moreover, while mRNA expression decreased during aging, there was no decrease in fibrillin immunoreactivity, as previously described in human aorta. These data indicate a very slow turnover of the zonular microfibrils which can be correlated with the appearance during aging of a new periodic fibrillar structure. This new structure may reflect an increased cross-linking in the long-lived zonular microfibrillar bundles.  相似文献

An on-line computerized graphic display has been developed for use during stereotactic operations. This depicts in the form of figurine charts and alph-numeric symbols, appropriately oriented on saggital brain diagrams, the results of serial threshold stimulation of the brain. The display facilitates choice of target sites and the data can be stored in a tape library from which search-and-plot programs can be activated for any type or combination of types of response.  相似文献

Regional differences in histochemical properties along the length of rat intrafusal muscle fibers were examined. Breast shape is best evaluated while the patient is in an upright position. However, many surgeons are reluctant to have a patient sit upright during surgery because of concerns over the patient's hemodynamic instability. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to prospectively measure cardiovascular parameters, including heart rate and mean arterial pressure, in a series of 30 patients who were placed upright during various aesthetic and reconstructive breast procedures. Data regarding the number of times the patient was placed upright and the amount of time spent in the upright position were also recorded. Measurements were obtained immediately before and after elevating the head of the bed to 80 to 90 degrees during the procedure. The average supine mean arterial pressure was 73 +/- 3 mmHg and that for an upright position was 70 +/- 3 mmHg. The average supine heart rate was 73 +/- 4 beats per minute and that for an upright position was 76 +/- 4 beats per minute. Although the difference between these results is statistically significant (p < 0.05), there was no clinical significance to placing patients in an upright seated position in this study, and no patient had to be laid back down because of hemodynamic instability. Therefore, the upright seated position is strongly advocated for intraoperative evaluation of breast shape, and a safe and effective method to accomplish this is described.  相似文献

Computers, particularly medical imaging techniques, have created a renaissance in stereotactic surgery. Human stereotaxis was primarily developed and performed beginning in the 1940s for functional disorders. Interest waned in the 1960s following the introduction of L-dopa until computer-based three-dimensionally precise tomographic modalities (specifically computed tomography) were introduced beginning in the mid-1970s as a routine diagnostic aid. New image-compatible hardware and instrumentation were introduced along with techniques and associated software for relating points and volumes appearing on these diagnostic images into stereotactic space. This paper reviews the computer and imaging technology that has led to this renaissance and discusses some of the important features of a computer-interactive stereotactic system.  相似文献

We have used electron microscopy and established methods of three-dimensional reconstruction to obtain structural information on the 30 nm chromatin fibers from sea cucumber sperm and chicken erythrocytes. The fibers show a longitudinal periodicity of 10–11 nm. We have interpreted this periodicity as due to a grouping of nucleosomes into disks, each disk containing about 5–6 nucleosomes. These disks are closely stacked to form the chromatin fiber. We have built a detailed model for four fibers and we have determined the approximate coordinates of all the nucleosomes in them. The average distance found between neighboring nucleosomes has a value close to 11 nm. They may be connected either as a regularly distorted helix or as a layered zigzag. The second model appears more appropriate, since in the constrictions of the fibers the nucleosomes can only be connected as a zigzag.  相似文献

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major human pathogen and its capsular polysaccharide has been shown to be the main virulence factor. The molecular organization of the genes governing the formation of this capsule was not studied until the 1990s. The capsular clusters (cap) of eight of the 90 known pneumococcal types have now been studied. The cap operon, located between the dexB and aliA genes, is arranged as a central region comprising the genes coding for the specific-type polysaccharide, flanked by open reading frames that are mostly common to all of the serotypes. The biochemical functions of 24 genes required for capsular polysaccharide biosynthesis have been elucidated but the precise role of the flanking regions in capsular formation is unknown. The natural genetic transformation characteristic of pneumococci, the arrangement of the cap locus and the abundance of transposable elements at this locus favor the genetic variability of the capsule in this microorganism. These well-documented observations together with the finding that some genes located outside the cap cluster may also participate in capsule formation increase the complexity of pneumococcal infection control.  相似文献

Structural and functional studies have been done on the nerve-muscle transmission in m. biventer cervicis of mouse using electrophysiological, mechanographic and microscopic techniques. It was shown that each muscle fiber has several synaptic inputs, although m. biventer cervicis is a typical phasic skeletal muscle. Usually, there is a single large synapse of the end-plate type and several small synaptic contacts. Some of the synapses investigated produce typical end-plate potential which is transformed into the action potential. Certain part of synapses are capable of producing action potentials only during facilitation of the transmission by rhythmic stimulation. In curarized preparations, supramaximum single indirect stimulus may evoke in a single point of a fiber multicomponent postsynaptic responses of various amplitude and, sometimes, of various latency. Contractile response of a single segment to a maximum direct stimulation is always higher than to an indirect one. Unusual functional properties of m. biventer cervicis are discussed in relation to peculiarities of its origin.  相似文献

A homolog of the meningococcal cps locus region E has been identified in Neisseria gonorrhoeae immediately upstream of the gonococcal region D locus. Region E has no detectable function in capsule biosynthesis in Neisseria meningitidis or in lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis in either organism. The open reading frame is homologous to proteins of unknown function in Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae. Further analysis of the N. meningitidis cps cluster has identified a second copy of region D encoding three additional open reading frames, including homologs of DNA methyltransferases. The organization of the region D and E genes in N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis in relation to the cps genes provides some insight into the evolutionary origin of encapsulation in N. meningitidis.  相似文献
