The measurement of bone loss in patients undergoing maintenance dialysis over a period of two and a half years is reported. The tendency to lose bone is a likely event in renal failure, but depends more on the individual patient than on the type of dialysis used, provided that steps are taken to prevent avoidable calcium loss during dialysis. Vitamin D therapy was an important factor in preventing bone loss in some cases. The tendency to lose bone more readily when both kidneys were absent may have reflected a deficiency of 1-25 dihydrocholecalciferol. On the other hand, bone loss was also observed in transplanted patients. The need to measure bone loss at regular intervals once renal failure has been diagnosed is stressed.  相似文献

The current paradigm for pathology reference intervals is for each laboratory to determine its own interval for use with each test offered by the laboratory. It is our contention that this approach does not best serve the medical community, especially at a time when electronic databases of health information are being expanded and integrated. We also believe that this approach is not performed well in many laboratories and is excessively expensive in practice. In contrast, we believe that the preferable option is to develop and apply common reference intervals throughout Australia and New Zealand, together with common reporting formats and assay standardisation wherever this is possible.

We are aware that these are neither trivial nor simple issues, however we believe that failure to achieve this goal where technically possible will be a failure of the pathology profession to meet the challenges of the modern health community.

Summary To assess the action of testosterone on the ontogenetic song development of canaries, silastic tubes containing testosterone propionate were implanted in 10 males at day 60. The implants were renewed at two week intervals until day 116. During the exogenous testosterone application the following time-related changes in the plasma titers were measured. The highest peaks of testosterone occurred 20 days after the first testosterone implantation. Between days 20 and 50 this concentration decreased drastically whereas DHT-concentration gradually reached a maximum. We assume that exogenous testosterone induces higher metabolic activity by converting the testosterone to DHT.  相似文献

With the regard to language maintenance, one of the most successful in over fifty of ethno-linguistic communities in China is the Korean community with more than two millions of Korean-speakers, in which there have been Regulations Regarding the Ethnic Language Use, and a maintenance-orientated and bilingual education system. However, language attrition comes to be occurring in the Korean community because more than two hundred thousands of Korean-speaking migrants have streamed from the Korean-rural community to the Chinese-urban community for the last twenty years. This paper, in urban-anthropological and sociolinguistic perspectives, is aiming at an analysis of the cause of population moves and the urbanization process of the Korean community as well as their impact on the language maintenance and bilingual education in the Korean community. It is mainly divided into four sections, namely, (1) the situation of Korean-speaking community; (2) the problem of language maintenance; (3) the impact of Korean-speakers moves on language maintenance; (4) the impact of negative growth of population, and (5) the impact of uneven ratio of female population.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of the main components of the ecosystem as well as the vertical distribution of their biomass and production were studied in the salmon lake Dalnee at Kamchatka Peninsula. The data received were used for the construction of schemes of energy balance during two successive years: 1970 and 1971, which were different by their thermic regime. Analysis of schemes showed that during a colder season the food chain was shorter and more effective in relation of the use of primary production by zooplankton. Through the detritus pool the ecosystem used from 16% (1971) up to 70% (1970) of energy of primary production. Seasonal succession includes two main phases -autotrophic and heterotrophic. The energy balance of the planktonic community at these two phases is given.  相似文献

The mechanisms of long-term synaptic maintenance are a key component to understanding the mechanism of long-term memory. From biological experiments, a hypothesis arose that repetitive stimuli with appropriate intervals are essential to maintain new synapses for periods of longer than a few days. We successfully reproduce the time-course of relative numbers of synapses with our mathematical model in the same conditions as biological experiments, which used Adenosine-3′, 5′-cyclic monophosphorothioate, Sp-isomer (Sp-cAMPS) as external stimuli. We also reproduce synaptic maintenance responsiveness to intervals of Sp-cAMPS treatment accompanied by PKA activation. The model suggests a possible mechanism of sustainable synaptogenesis which consists of two steps. First, the signal transduction from an external stimulus triggers the synthesis of a new signaling protein. Second, the new signaling protein is required for the next signal transduction with the same stimuli. As a result, the network component is modified from the first network, and a different signal is transferred which triggers the synthesis of another new signaling molecule. We refer to this hypothetical mechanism as network succession. We build our model on the basis of two hypotheses: (1) a multi-step network succession induces downregulation of SSH and COFILIN gene expression, which triggers the production of stable F-actin; (2) the formation of a complex of stable F-actin with Drebrin at PSD is the critical mechanism to achieve long-term synaptic maintenance. Our simulation shows that a three-step network succession is sufficient to reproduce sustainable synapses for a period longer than 14 days. When we change the network structure to a single step network, the model fails to follow the exact condition of repetitive signals to reproduce a sufficient number of synapses. Another advantage of the three-step network succession is that this system indicates a greater tolerance of parameter changes than the single step network.  相似文献

Robert MacArthur developed a theory of community assembly based on competition. By incorporating energy flow, MacArthur's theory allows for predictions of community function. A key prediction is that communities minimise energy wastage over time, but this minimisation is a trade‐off between two conflicting processes: exploiting food resources, and maintaining low metabolism and mortality. Despite its simplicity and elegance, MacArthur's principle has not been tested empirically despite having long fascinated theoreticians. We used a combination of field chronosequence experiments and laboratory assays to estimate how the energy wastage of a community changes during succession. We found that older successional stages wasted more energy in maintenance, but there was no clear pattern in how communities of different age exploited food resources. We identify several reasons for why MacArthur's original theory may need modification and new avenues to further explore community efficiency, an understudied component of ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Question: Are long‐unburnt patches of eucalypt forest important for maintaining floristic diversity? Location: Eucalyptus forests of southeastern New South Wales, Australia. Methods: Data from 976 sites representing a range of fire history from three major vegetation formations – shrubby dry sclerophyll forest (SF), grassy dry SF and wet SF – were analysed. Generalized linear models were used to examine changes in species richness with increasing time since wildfire and analysis of similarities to examine changes in community composition. Chi‐squared tests were conducted to examine the distribution of individual species across four time since fire categories. Results: Plant species relationships to fire varied between the three formations. Shrubby dry SF supported lower plant species richness with increasing time since wildfire and this was associated with shifts in community composition. Grassy dry SF showed significant shifts in community composition and species richness in relation to time, with a peak in plant species richness 20–30 yr post fire (either prescribed fire or wildfire). Wet SF increased in species richness until 10–20 yr post wildfire then displayed a general declining trend. Species richness in each vegetation type was not related to the fire frequencies and fire intervals observed in this study. Conclusions: Long‐unburnt (30–50 yr post wildfire) forests appeared to play a minor role in the maintenance of plant species diversity in dry forest systems, although this was more significant in wet forests. Maintenance of a range of fire ages within each vegetation formation will assist in maintaining floristic diversity within regions.  相似文献

Rapid diagnostic pathways for cancer have been implemented, but evidence whether shorter diagnostic intervals (time from primary care presentation to diagnosis) improves survival is lacking. Using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, we identified patients diagnosed with female breast (8,639), colorectal (5,912), lung (5,737) and prostate (1,763) cancers between 1998 and 2009, and aged >15 years. Presenting symptoms were classified as alert or non-alert, according to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance. We used relative survival and excess risk modeling to determine associations between diagnostic intervals and five-year survival. The survival of patients with colorectal, lung and prostate cancer was greater in those with alert, compared with non-alert, symptoms, but findings were opposite for breast cancer. Longer diagnostic intervals were associated with lower mortality for colorectal and lung cancer patients with non-alert symptoms, (colorectal cancer: Excess Hazards Ratio, EHR >6 months vs <1 month: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72-1.00; Lung cancer: EHR 3-6 months vs <1 month: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.80-0.95; EHR >6 months vs <1 month: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.74-0.89). Prostate cancer mortality was lower in patients with longer diagnostic intervals, regardless of type of presenting symptom. The association between diagnostic intervals and cancer survival is complex, and should take into account cancer site, tumour biology and clinical practice. Nevertheless, unnecessary delay causes patient anxiety and general practitioners should continue to refer patients with alert symptoms via the cancer pathways, and actively follow-up patients with non-alert symptoms in the community.  相似文献

Alveolar macrophages collected by pulmonary lavage from male Fisher-344 rats at intervals (24–72 h) after HgCl2 injection (1–5 mg/kg, sc) were analyzed by several techniques. Within 24–72 h, the macrophages showed morphological signs of activation (hypertrophy and ruffled plasma membrane). Lipid peroxidation (increased malondialdehyde concentration) was not detected until 48 h. Dose- and time-related effects of HgCl2 on malondialdehyde concentration and time-related effects of HgCl2 on malondialdehyde concentration and mercury content of alveolar macrophages were observed 24–72 h postinjection. Diminished cell viability occurred only at 72 h after the highest dosage of HgCl2. This study demonstrates that the alveolar macrophage was a cellular target for mercury toxicity following parenteral exposure to HgCl2.  相似文献

盐地碱蓬(Suaeda salsa)盐沼湿地是黄渤海地区河口区域的重要湿地类型, 是水鸟迁徙停歇期的重要栖息地。本研究以辽河口国家级自然保护区为研究地点, 通过对盐地碱蓬盐沼湿地和相邻泥质滩涂两个固定样区连续三年的水鸟组成调查和行为观察, 分析盐地碱蓬盐沼湿地在鸻鹬类多样性维持和栖息地利用中的作用。共记录到鸻鹬类水鸟28种6,348只次, 其中盐地碱蓬湿地记录到4科13种, 泥质滩涂记录到4科27种, 泥质滩涂的物种多样性显著高于盐地碱蓬盐沼湿地。此外, 盐地碱蓬盐沼湿地与相邻的泥质滩涂的鸻鹬类鸟类群落组成存在较大差异, 盐地碱蓬盐沼湿地的鸟类群落组成以体型较大的大杓鹬(Numenius madagascariensis)、白腰杓鹬(N. arquata)、灰鸻(Pluvialis squatarola)等为主, 而泥质滩涂以环颈鸻(Charadrius alexandrinus)、黑腹滨鹬(Calidris alpina)等小型鸻鹬类为主, 这说明两种生境在鸟类多样性维持中具有不同的功能。行为分析发现, 泥质滩涂中栖息鸟类的主要行为为取食(58.71%-93.26%), 而盐地碱蓬盐沼湿地鸟类的行为既包括较大比例的取食, 也包括休息, 特别是在春季迁徙期。这进一步说明, 两种生境在水鸟的栖息地利用中具有一定的生态功能差异。尽管盐地碱蓬盐沼湿地记录到的鸟类物种数和数量均低于泥质滩涂, 但是, 两种生境中存在较大比例的共同分布物种, 这说明其生态功能具有较强的生态互补性, 二者作为一种独特的湿地景观组合, 在鸻鹬类迁徙停歇期的栖息地利用和物种多样性维持中发挥着不可替代的作用。  相似文献

Little is known about the role of immigration in shaping bacterial communities or the factors that may dictate success or failure of colonization by bacteria from regional species pools. To address these knowledge gaps, the influence of bacterial colonization into an ecosystem (activated sludge bioreactor) was measured through a disturbance gradient (successive decreases in the parameter solids retention time) relative to stable operational conditions. Through a DNA sequencing approach, we show that the most abundant bacteria within the immigrant community have a greater probability of colonizing the receiving ecosystem, but mostly as low abundance community members. Only during the disturbance do some of these bacterial populations significantly increase in abundance beyond background levels and in few cases become dominant community members post‐disturbance. Two mechanisms facilitate the enhanced enrichment of immigrant populations during disturbance: (i) the availability of resources left unconsumed by established species and (ii) the increased availability of niche space for colonizers to establish and displace resident populations. Thus, as a disturbance decreases local diversity, recruitment sites become available to promote colonization. This work advances our understanding of microbial resource management and diversity maintenance in complex ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract The Eastern Snake River Plain aquifer has hydrologically distinct zones in basalt flow units and interbedded sediments. The zones that differ markedly in physical features (e.g., porosity and permeability) have similar groundwater chemistries. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether intervals within the aquifer that contrast on the basis of permeability have distinct communities of unattached microorganisms based on functional attributes. Aquifer sampling was conducted using a submersible pump to obtain whole-well (w) samples, and a straddle-packer pump (SPP) to obtain samples from specific aquifer intervals that were vertically distributed in the open borehole. The SPP intervals ranged from 4.6 to 6.1 m in length and were located from 142 to 198 m below land surface. A community-level physiological profile (CLPP) was used to determine functional characteristics of the microbial community in the groundwater samples based on the community response to 95 sole organic carbon sources. Surface soil samples at the site were analyzed in a similar manner for comparison. The total bacterial population in the groundwater samples was determined using acridine orange direct counts. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the CLPP dataset distinguished between surface soil and aquifer microbial communities. Soils scored low in the respiration of polymers, esters, and amines and high in bromosuccinate, when compared to aquifer samples. The W samples were distinct from SPP samples. The 180- to 198-m interval, with the lowest hydraulic conductivity of all intervals, yielded samples that grouped together by PCA and cluster analysis. Direct counts varied between 104 and 105 cells ml−1, and showed no relationship to the depth of the sample or to the hydraulic conductivity of the sample interval. Differences between microbial communities based on respired carbon compounds were discerned in separate, hydrologically distinct intervals within the borehole, although these differences were slight. Differences among aquifer intervals were less apparent than differences between surface soils and groundwater, and may be related to variations in hydrologic properties over the intervals sampled. The results suggest that free-living microbial communities in basalt aquifers, as characterized by CLPP are relatively unaffected by wide ranges in hydraulic conductivity when other abiotic factors are essentially equal. The factors regulating soil microbial stability (e.g. resistance and resilience) are poorly understood, even though microorganisms are essential for ecosystem functioning. In this study, we tested whether a functional microbial community subjected to different primary mild stresses was equally resistant or resilient to a subsequent severe stress. The nitrate reducers were selected as model community and analysed in terms of nitrate reduction rates and genetic structure by narG PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting. Heat, copper and atrazine were used as primary stresses and mercury at a high concentration as a severe stress. None of the primary stresses had any significant impact on the nitrate reducer community. Although primary stress with heat, copper or atrazine had no effect on the resilience of the nitrate reducer activity to mercury stress, pre-exposure to copper, another heavy metal, resulted in increased resilience. In contrast, the resistance of both structure and activity of the nitrate reducer community to severe mercury stress was not affected by any of the primary stresses tested. Our experiment suggests that the hypothetical effect of an initial stress on the response of a microbial community to an additional stress is complex and may depend on the relatedness of the two consecutive stresses and the development of positive cotolerance.  相似文献

群落构建研究对于解释物种共存和物种多样性的维持是至关重要的,因此一直是生态学研究的中心论题。尽管近年来关于生态位和中性理论的验证研究已经取得了显著的成果,但对于局域群落构建机制的认识仍存在很大争议。随着统计和理论上的进步使得用功能性状和群落谱系结构解释群落构建机制变为可能,主要是通过验证共存物种的性状和谱系距离分布模式来实现。然而,谱系和功能性状不能相互替代,多种生物和非生物因子同时控制着群落构建,基于中性理论的扩散限制、基于生态位的环境过滤和竞争排斥等多个过程可能同时影响着群落的构建。所以,综合考虑多种方法和影响因素探讨植物群落的构建机制,对于预测和解释植被对干扰的响应,理解生物多样性维持机制有重要意义。试图在简要回顾群落构建理论及研究方法发展的基础上,梳理其最新研究进展,并探讨整合功能性状及群落谱系结构的研究方法,解释群落构建和物种多样性维持机制的可能途径。在结合功能性状和谱系结构研究群落构建时,除了考虑空间尺度、环境因子、植被类型外,还应该关注时间尺度、选择性状的种类和数量、性状的种内变异、以及人为干扰等因素对群落构建的影响。  相似文献

The gel forming mucus layer surrounding scleractinian corals play fundamental functions in the maintenance of a favorable microenvironment required for the survival of these organisms. In particular, it harbors a rich partially species-specific symbiotic community through yet poorly understood molecular interactions. However, removal or contamination of this community by exogenous bacteria is closely linked to the worldwide bleaching events that are presently devastating coral colonies. The present study investigates the structure of major high molecular weight glycoconjugates that are responsible for both rheological properties of mucus and sugar-protein interactions with microbial communities. We demonstrated that it is composed by two distinct types of sulfated macromolecules: mucin type glycoproteins densely substituted by short unusual O-linked glycans and repetitive polysaccharides.  相似文献

Though the primary development of principles of energetics waspioneered in aquatic studies, considerable information has accruedfrom more recent investigations of terrestrial species. Studiesof soil organisms—particularly arthropods—have givenus some understanding of the applicability of principles ofenergetics to terrestrial communities. Data from soil communitieshave yielded an annual energy budget for oribatid mites, ecologicalefficiencies for two trophic levels, and a series of herbivore:carnivoreratios for a number of communities. Energy-flow analyses ofthe problems of species abundance in community organization,the relationship of population production and maintenance, andthe energy relationships of the soil to above-ground communitieshave also been attempted. As data accumulate, however, the inadequacyof the Lindeman model becomes apparent, and there are prospectsfor change in this conceptual scheme.  相似文献

Abstract Fire frequency is the number of fires experienced by a particular community within a given time period. This variable can potentially be resolved into a number of interacting components, including time since the most recent fire, and the length of the inter-fire intervals. We estimated the effects of inter-fire intervals and sequences of inter-fire intervals, independently of time-since-fire, on the floristic composition of 26 samples from dry sclerophyll vegetation with different fire histories in Brisbane Water National Park near Sydney. In particular, we examined the effects in the recent fire history of: the length of the shortest inter-fire interval (1–26 years); repetition of very short (1–3 years) and medium (7–14 years) inter-fire intervals; and recovery from very short (1–3 years) and short (4–6 years) inter-fire intervals. Our analyses suggest that inter-fire interval may account for about 55% of the floristic variation among our samples, which were taken at a uniform 18 months after the most recent fire. There appear to be at least three general and unrelated effects of the recent history of inter-fire intervals on the floristic composition of this vegetation: (i) shorter inter-fire intervals were associated with a reduction in the number of species present in the community, along with a more unequal abundance of the remaining species, particularly of those large Proteaceae shrubs that often dominate the community biomass in dry sclerophyll shrublands of southeastern Australia; (ii) the presence of an inter-fire interval that is 1–6 years long was associated with an additional reversible reduction in the number of fire-sensitive species present in the community, particularly those common shrub species with a canopy-stored seed-bank and non-leguminous species with a soil-stored seed-bank; and (iii) repetition of inter-fire intervals that are 1–5 years long was associated with an increase in the abundance of herbaceous fire-tolerant species. This means that variation in these characteristics is associated with changes in abundance of different plant species, and that the floristic composition of any one area can be influenced in three different ways by these variables. Management of fire for plant species conservation must therefore be based on both length of time-since-fire and length of inter-fire intervals if it is to be effective.  相似文献

Facultative hyperparasitism is likely to be the most common form of intraguild predation among parasitoids. However, difficulties associated with studying facultative hyperparasitoids in the field have hampered a thorough understanding of their trophic ecology. In this study, we used a combination of stable isotope analysis and published natural history information to infer trophic interactions in a guild of field-collected primary parasitoids and facultative hyperparasitoids that attack a gall-making midge on Baccharis pilularis. Our three a priori hypotheses were: (1) stable isotope values should increase incrementally from the host plant to higher trophic levels; (2) the two species of ectoparasitoids should exhibit higher stable isotope signatures than the two endoparasitoids, and; (3) the two facultative hyperparasitoids should exhibit stable isotope signatures that fall between zero and one trophic level steps above that observed for the primary parasitoids. Food webs inferred from stable isotope data generally agreed with previously published accounts of community structure. As expected, both δ13C and δ15N were progressively enriched in the heavy isotope from the host plant to the herbivorous midge to the parasitic wasps. Multivariate analysis of stable isotope data revealed that the two primary ectoparasitoids occupied a similar trophic niche, but were significantly different from the primary endoparasitoids. We attribute this result to “coincidental intraguild predation” by ectoparasitoids that develop on already-parasitized midge larvae. One of the facultative hyperparasitoids, Zatropis capitis, exhibited a stable isotope signature approximately one trophic step above the primary parasitoids. Unexpectedly, the second facultative hyperparasitoid, Mesopolobus sp., appeared to be developing as a primary parasitoid at all sites. Coupled with independent assessments of community structure, stable isotope analysis validated trophic links constructed by previous researchers and identified potential taxon-specific differences in trophic interactions for two facultative hyperparasitoids in the B. pilularis gall community.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available to authorised users in the online version of this article at .  相似文献
