Resting spores of Thalassiosira scotia Fryx. et Hoban were abundant in phytoplankton net hauls collected from the Scotia Sea south of South Georgia in December 1981. Primary valves are distinguished from secondary valves by the presence of marginal striae with rounded, shoelike protrusions, villi surrounding marginal areolae and marginal striae, greater numbers of central strutted processes, and differences in structure of occluded processes. Densities of marginal strutted processes also tend to differ, though ranges overlap. Thalassiosira scotia is most closely related to T. antarctica, differing from that taxon by having coarser areolation, heavier silicification, and more prominent occluded processes. Rudimentary valves of T. scotia differ from those of T. antarctica.  相似文献

Summary Thalassiosira bulbosa Syvertsen is described from one clonal culture and natural marine, arctic material collected from brown spots on the ice and from seawater close to the ice border. The new taxon belongs to the group of Thalassiosira species with a single central strutted process and one marginal ring of strutted processes. Specific features are the conspicuous bulbshaped outer part of the marginal strutted processes and a strutted tube surrounded by two oblong, bean-shaped satellite pores. T. bulbosa forms resting cells differing from the vegetative cells mainly in the degree of silicification and by having fewer openings through the frustule. The species may obtain its maximal cell size by a purely vegetative auxospore formation.  相似文献

Thalassiosira oestrupii (Ostenfeld) Hasle was studied from the southern Indian Ocean, Wed-dell Sea, and northern Atlantic Ocean. It has the longer extension of the strutted process inwards, with three small columnar supports. A single strutted process near the central areola is 2-3 areolae away from the single labiate process; both are usually visible in the light microscope. Two bands are septate: the valvocopula (intercalary band next to the mantle) is ribbed with a complex pattern of pores, while the other intercalary band (copula) present has but a single ring of large pores. T. oestrupii var. venrickae is described from warmer water with similar bands but with differences in areolae array and spacing of marginal strutted processes. It was found in the Gulf of Mexico, eastern and western Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and western Indian Ocean. The two varieties appear to differ in their ecology and distribution, with T. oestrupii var. oestrupii apparently a cosmopolitan oceanic taxon and T. oestrupii var. venrickae a tropical and subtropical continental shelf taxon.  相似文献

A new species of diatom, Thalassiosira sundarbana, is described based on light and scanning electron microscopy along with molecular phylogeny. The specimen was collected from Chemaguri creek of the Indian part of Sundarbans mangroves, and subsequently a clonal culture was established. Thalassiosira sundarbana possess variable numbers of occluded processes, and one labiate process on the valve face. Valve margin is ribbed and areolae are fasciculated on the valve face. Two rings of strutted processes are present on valve face. Strutted processes are also scattered on the valve face apart from the presence of two rings. Valvocopula and copula have rows of pore, and pleurae are hyaline. Bayesian analyses of nuclear encoded small subunit (SSU) rDNA and plastid encoded rbcL gene confirmed that T. sundarbana is phylogenetically novel. Salinity tolerance experiment with the clonal culture of T. sundarbana showed that this isolate can grow in salinity ranging from 10–35 psu. The maximum growth rate was observed in 15 psu salinity (0.5 divisions 24 h?1). On the basis of morphological features and molecular phylogeny, this clonal isolate is considered as a new estuarine species of Thalassiosira.  相似文献

Summary The resting spore morphology of the antarctic diatoms Coscinodiscus furcatus Karsten and Thalassiosira australis Peragallo are described. Both species form endogenous resting spores. The spore valve of C. furcatus differ from those of the vegetative cells primarily by (i) a greater convexity and (ii) a coarser and more distinctly fasciculated areolation. This resting spore is identical to the diatom traditionally identified as C. stellaris var. symbolophorus (Grunow) Jørgensen in the Antarctic. The resting spore of T. australis differs from the vegetative cells by (i) a lack of clusters of strutted processes in a modified ring on valve face, (ii) a coarser areolation and tangential rows of areolae and (iii) a narrower and more simply structured girdle. The resting spore valve of T. australis has been described as belonging to a separate species, Actinocyclus excentricus Peragallo.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of Zn availability on growth rate (μ), cell morphology, and elemental stoichiometry and incorporation rate in two marine diatoms. For the coastal diatom Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve, the half‐saturation constant (KS) for growth was 4.1 pM Zn2+, and growth ceased at ≤ 2.6 pM Zn2+, whereas for the oceanic diatom Thalassiosira oceanica Hasle, KS was 0.5 pM Zn2+, and μ remained at ~40%μmax even at 0.3 pM Zn2+. Under Zn‐limiting (Zn‐L) conditions, S. costatum decreased cell size significantly, leading to an 80% increase in surface area to volume ratio (SA/V) at Zn2+ of 3.5 pM compared to Zn‐replete (Zn‐R) conditions (at Zn2+ of 13.2 pM), whereas T. oceanica’s morphology did not change appreciably. Cell quotas of C, N, P, Si, and chl a significantly decreased under Zn limitation in S. costatum (at Zn2+ of 3.5 pM), whereas Zn limitation in T. oceanica (at Zn2+ of 0.3 pM) had little effect on quotas. Elemental stoichiometry was ~85C:10N:9Si:1P and 81C:9N:5Si:1P for S. costatum, and 66C:5N:2Si:1P and 52C:6N:2Si:1P for T. oceanica, under Zn‐R and Zn‐L conditions, respectively. Incorporation rates of all elements were significantly reduced under Zn limitation for both diatoms, but particularly for Si in S. costatum, and for C in T. oceanica, despite its apparent tolerance of low Zn conditions. With [Zn2+] in some parts of the ocean being of the same order (~0.2 to 2 pM) as our low Zn conditions for T. oceanica, our results support the hypothesis that in situ growth and C acquisition may be limited by Zn in some oceanic species.  相似文献

We investigated copper (Cu) acquisition mechanisms and uptake kinetics of the marine diatoms Thalassiosira oceanica Hasle, an oceanic strain, and Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle et Heimdal, a coastal strain, grown under replete and limiting iron (Fe) and Cu availabilities. The Cu‐uptake kinetics of these two diatoms followed classical Michaelis–Menten kinetics. Biphasic uptake kinetics as a function of Cu concentration were observed, suggesting the presence of both high‐ and low‐affinity Cu‐transport systems. The half‐saturation constants (Km) and the maximum Cu‐uptake rates (Vmax) of the high‐affinity Cu‐transport systems (~7–350 nM and 1.5–17 zmol · μm?2 · h?1, respectively) were significantly lower than those of the low‐affinity systems (>800 nM and 30–250 zmol · μm?2 · h?1, respectively). The two Cu‐transport systems were controlled differently by low Fe and/or Cu. The high‐affinity Cu‐transport system of both diatoms was down‐regulated under Fe limitation. Under optimal‐Fe and low‐Cu growth conditions, the Km of the high‐affinity transport system of T. oceanica was lower (7.3 nM) than that of T. pseudonana (373 nM), indicating that T. oceanica had a better ability to acquire Cu at subsaturating concentrations. When Fe was sufficient, the low‐affinity Cu‐transport system of T. oceanica saturated at 2,000 nM Cu, while that of T. pseudonana did not saturate, indicating different Cu‐transport regulation by these two diatoms. Using CuEDTA as a model organic complex, our results also suggest that diatoms might be able to access Cu bound within organic Cu complexes.  相似文献

Thalassiosira Cleve is one of the most species-rich marine diatom genera. Previous studies have mainly focused on polar and temperate areas, but recent studies on material from Asian waters suggested that a high and undescribed species diversity of Thalassiosira occurs in Asia. On the basis of plankton samples collected from the South China Sea, a new species, T. sinica sp. nov. Y. Li & Y. Q. Guo is described. The morphology of the cells was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The hypervariable region of the nuclear large-subunit ribosomal DNA and the relatively conserved region of the nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA were sequenced for information on phylogenetic relationships. The living cells are usually solitary and drum-shaped. The areolae on the valve are delicate, small and arranged in fascicles. In addition to a regular ring of marginal fultoportulae on the valve edge, T. sinica possesses one central fultoportula and a number of fultoportulae arranged into 2–3 irregular rings on the valve face. A rimoportula located inside the ring of marginal fultoportulae possesses a long and strong external tube. The valvocopula and the copulae have rows of pores, but the pores on the valvocopula are larger than those on the copulae. Thalassiosira sinica appears to be included in subgroup C sensu Gedde because of a rimoportula with a distinct external tube located on the valve face. The molecular phylogeny, inferred from both SSU and LSU sequences, does, however, not support the validity of subgroup C, as the closest allies of T. sinica here turned out to be T. diporocyclus and T. lundiana, species in which the rimoportulae are located on the valve margin.  相似文献

Diatom systematics depends almost entirely upon structure of the silica shell. It is not known to what extent the taxonomic species, as defined by shell structure, corresponds to the genetic species—i.e., to the reproductively isolated population. As an approach to this problem, we report here a comparison of enzymes by electrophoresis. We have examined the genetic constitution of a number of clones of (presumably) the same species for each of 2 closely related, centric diatom species: Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle and Heimdal and T. fluviatilis Hustedt. The 4 clones of T. fluviatilis form a distinct group, clearly separated from all the T. pseudonana clones. Within T. pseudonana, 4 estuarine clones and one reef clone form a group that is distinctly different from 4 oceanic clones. A single clone of T. pseudonana from the Continental Slope waters is intermediate between these 2 groups and probably shares genes with both groups, indicating that the 2 T. pseudonana groups are not genetically isolated. We conclude that i) within groups, isolates are closely related even though they originated from different continents; and, ii) T. pseudonana is subdivided into ecological races.  相似文献

Assessing the iron (Fe) nutritional status of natural diatom populations has proven challenging as physiological and molecular responses can differ in diatoms of the same genus. We evaluated expression of genes encoding flavodoxin (FLDA1) and an Fe-starvation induced protein (ISIP3) as indicators of Fe limitation in the marine diatom Thalassiosira oceanica. The specificity of the response to Fe limitation was tested in cultures grown under Fe- and macronutrient-deficient conditions, as well as throughout the diurnal light cycle. Both genes showed a robust and specific response to Fe limitation in laboratory cultures and were detected in small volume samples collected from the northeast Pacific, demonstrating the sensitivity of this method. Overall, FLDA1 and ISIP3 expression was inversely related to Fe concentrations and offered insight into the Fe nutritional health of T. oceanica in the field. As T. oceanica is a species tolerant to low Fe, indications of Fe limitation in T. oceanica populations may serve as a proxy for severe Fe stress in the overall diatom community. At two shallow coastal locations, FLD1A and ISIP3 expression revealed Fe stress in areas where dissolved Fe concentrations were high, demonstrating that this approach may be powerful for identifying regions where Fe supply may not be biologically available.  相似文献

Type material of Thalassiosira minuscula Krasske and material identified by the respective authors as Nitzschia delicatissima Cleve and Cyclotella nana Hustedt (= Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle et Heimdal) have been examined in light and electron microscopes. It is suggested that the slide labelled “Nitzschia delicatissima Helder 7/5–97” is accepted as neotype of the species since the original material must be regarded as lost, and that Thalassiosira pseudonana is identical to the diatom isolated by Guillard as clone 3-H. Nitzschia actydrophila Hasle and Thalassiosira monoporocyclus Hasle are rejected as separate species, the first being conspecific with N. delicatissima and the second with T. minuscula. The question is raised whether more emphasis should be laid on iconotypes of small diatom species identifiable only in the electron microscope than on real individuals.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction is commonly assumed to occur in the vast majority of diatoms due to the intimate association of this process with cell size control. Surprisingly, however, little is known about the impact of sexual events on diatom population dynamics. The Sig1 gene is strongly upregulated during sexual reproduction in the centric diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii and has been hypothesized to encode a protein involved in gamete recognition. In the present study, degenerate PCR primers were designed and used to amplify a portion of Sig1 from three closely related species in the cosmopolitan genus Thalassiosira, Thalassiosira oceanica, Thalassiosira guillardii, and Thalassiosira pseudonana. Identification of Sig1 in these three additional species facilitated development of this gene as a molecular marker for diatom sexual events. Examination of the new sequences indicated that multiple copies of Sig1 are probably present in the genome. Moreover, compared to the housekeeping gene β-tubulin, the Sig1 genes of isolates of T. weissflogii collected from different regions of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans displayed high levels of divergence. The Sig1 genes of the four closely related Thalassiosira species also displayed high levels of sequence divergence compared to the levels observed with a second gene, Fcp, probably explaining why Sig1 could not be amplified from more distantly related species. The high levels of sequence divergence both within and between species suggest that Sig1 is rapidly evolving in a manner reminiscent of the manner observed in other genes that encode gamete recognition proteins. A simple model is presented for Sig1 evolution and the implications of such a rapidly evolving sexual reproduction gene for diatom speciation and population dynamics.  相似文献

唇形突是海链藻中常见的一类突起, 其形态学特征和排列方式是重要的分类学依据。绝大多数海链藻只有一个唇形突, 两个唇形突的现象仅报道于极少数海链藻种类。我国关于双唇形突海链藻的报道较少。研究利用扫描电镜(SEM)技术, 对采自我国沿海海域的自然水样, 以及分离获得的单克隆培养藻株进行了形态学观察, 针对其中的海链藻属Thalassiosira Cleve种类开展了形态学的专题研究。报道了4个具有双唇形突的海链藻种类, 分别是有翼海链藻T. bipartita (Rattray) Hallegraeff、脆弱海链藻T. fragilis Fryxell、亨氏海链藻T. hendeyi Hasle &; Fryxell和维斯吉思海链藻T. visurgis Hustedt, 其中有3个为我国新记录种类: 脆弱海链藻、亨氏海链藻和维斯吉思海链藻。对每个种类的形态学特征、生活习性和生态分布进行了描述, 提供了扫描电镜照片, 对相似种类的形态学特征进行了比较研究, 分析了唇形突的变化类型及其分类学价值。  相似文献

A new species Stephanodiscus vestibulis is described from an eutrophic, hardwater habitat in western North America. Under the light microscope it resembles, and has perhaps been confused with, certain other small species of the genus. Structural features of the valve resolved by SEM, however, show that it is unique. The new species is particularly characterized by arch-like vestibules over the external openings of the marginal strutted processes. Other features include central and marginal strutted processes with three satellite pores, internally domed criba on the puncta and a single labiate process.  相似文献

Minidiscus trioculatus, M. comicus and M. chilensis are new records for China, and M. subtilis, is a new species. They differ from Thalassiosira species by their strutted processes and one single labiate process being distant from valve margin and they differ from each other by their areola patterns on valves and distribution patterns of strutted processes and the labiate process. A key to the species of Minidiscus is given. Minidiscus subtilis Gao, Cheng et Chin sp. nov., figs 7-8 Valves disc-shaped, slightly concave in center, weakly silicified, 3.5-5.5μm in diameter. Areola unequally radiate-striate, striae 8.5 / lμm. A narrow valve mantle without striae. Three strutted processes and a single labiate process located in the central area of the valve. Among them, one strutted process in the very center with the other two adjacent to it, forming an isometric triangle with the labiate process between the two subcentral strutted processes. Two small satellite pores in each base of the strutted processes. M. subtilis differs from M. chilensis mainly by their radiate striae continuously distributed from the valve center tothe margin.  相似文献

Examination of original material from the Ehrenberg collection plus clonal cultures from the Gulf of Mexico and net hauls from widely separated stations in the world's oceans confirms that Coscinodiscus eccentricus is correctly placed as Thalassiosira eccentrica (Ehrenb.) Cleve. A closely related species, T. symmetrica, is described, with, the main differences being found in the value processes and distribution patterns. The former species is more abundant in inshore waters; the latter has been found in oceanic waters. Comparisons are drawn between these 2 species, T. mendiolana and Planktoniella sol.  相似文献

壳面孔纹的形态学特征是海链藻的重要分类学依据之一。线形亚属的海链藻种类大多是从圆筛藻属修订而来, 它们之间的区别特征细微, 需电镜下观察才能准确鉴定。我国关于线形亚属海链藻的报道较少。研究利用电镜(EM)技术, 对采自我国沿海海域的自然水样, 以及分离获得的单克隆培养藻株进行了形态学观察, 针对其中的海链藻属Thalassiosira Cleve种类开展了形态分类学的专题研究。报道了6个隶属于线形亚属的海链藻种类, 分别是紧密海链藻T. densannula Hasle &; Fryxell、微小海链藻T. exigua Fryxell &; Hasle、线形海链藻T. lineata Jousé、微线形海链藻T. nanolineata (Mann) Fryxell &; Hasle、结线形海链藻T. nodulolineata (Hendey) Hasle &; Fryxell和柔弱海链藻T. tenera Proschkina-Lavrenko, 其中有4个为我国新记录种类: 紧密海链藻、线形海链藻、微线形海链藻和结线形海链藻。对每个种类的形态学特征、生活习性和生态分布进行了描述, 提供了电镜照片。对相似种类的形态学特征进行了比较研究, 分析了孔纹特征的变化类型及其分类学意义。  相似文献

Three Cocconeis Ehrenberg species, epiphytic on the leaves of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, were studied by light and electron microscopy. A new species, C. pseudonotata, is described which is closely related to C. notata Petit and C. diruptoides Hustedt. Gross morphology and the presence of a sigmoid raphe and sternum are the characters shared by the three species, whereas the central areas of sternum and raphe-sternum valves, and the stria and areola densities are the main distinctive characters for the species when observed by light microscopy. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations revealed that the fine structure of areolae must be also considered in order to identify the species. Comparison among the three species has been carried out by observations on material from our samples, as well as on the type material of C. diruptoides and cleaned samples from the Hustedt collection. The study also provides new information on the geographical distribution of these species.  相似文献

Along the Mediterranean coast,Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile meadows have a great ecological and economical importance. However, there is a general regression of these meadows due to human activities such as illegal bottom trawling, may be affecting to overall ecosystem health. We examined changes in the community structure of mobile fauna associated withP. oceanica meadows at different spatial scales and taxonomic levels. The aim of this paper was to identify the most efficient taxonomic level to use in environmental impact studies of bottom trawling. At the macroscale level (10 to 100 m), there were significant differences between sites in the densities of some fish species and also the total fish assemblage structure, at both family and species taxonomical levels. At the microscale (0.1 to 1 m), some species of amphipods and isopods showed significant differences in their population densities. In the overall analysis of community structure, the coarse taxonomical levels, such as phyla and class, did not show significant differences, however amphipods and isopods showed significant differences at family and species levels. From these results, both study scales are required to detect changes onPosidonia meadows' fauna. Monitoring of some fish species such asDiplodus annularis (Linnaeus, 1758) and the overall fish assemblage as well as the structure of the amphipod and isopod communities appears to be the most efficient tool in the assessment of environmental impacts by bottom trawling onP. oceanica meadows.  相似文献
