The results of breeding experiments designed to determine the genetic control of the colour/pattern polymorphism in Philaenus spumarius in certain British populations are described and contrasted to previously published results for material taken from populations in southern Finland. The 11 principal phenotypes are controlled by seven alleles at a single autosomal locus, with complex patterns of dominance and co-dominance. In Finland, and most of the rest of the species' extensive range, the eight melanic morphs are wholly or substantially limited to the females, in which they are dominant to the typical form. Previously, this sex limitation has been explained in terms of reduced penetrance of melanic alleles in males and/or dominance reversal between the sexes, such that the eight melanic phenotypes (controlled by five alleles which are adjacent in the dominance heirarchy) are dominant to typical in the females but recessive in the males. Published data on morph frequencies in S Finland and on breeding experiments using material collected from these populations are re-examined and it is shown that neither theory accounts adequately for all the evidence. By contrast, in most British populations there is greatly increased penetrance in males of the melanic morphs which are strictly female-limited elsewhere. Breeding experiments, using P. spumarius taken from selected British populations, provide clear evidence that melanics are dominant to typical in both sexes. This difference in genetic control is entirely consistent with the balance of morph frequencies between the sexes in the populations from which the breeding material for the two separate studies was taken. Experimental material for this study was taken from populations in the Cynon Valley in south Wales, which have the highest melanic frequencies in the species' range and show particularly clear expression of melanic phenotypes in males. Both of these features are strongly correlated with severe aerial pollution from a local smokeless fuel factory. Selection for melanism in these populations is clearly strong, which probably accounts for the high level of penetrance and the dominance of melanics to typical in both sexes. Although further experiments are needed, it is suggested that regulatory loci, controlling the penetrance and expression of melanic alleles in males, could account for the observed differences in genetic control between populations in Britain and Finland.  相似文献

The visible polymorphism of the spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius, has been investigated in the vicinity of a smokeless fuel factory in the Cynon Valley of south Wales. The factory is a significant source of local particulate air pollution. A striking relationship exists between the combined frequencies of the eight dark (melanic) morphs and proximity to the factory. Maximum melanic phenotype frequencies of over 95“, occur in both sexes immediately adjacent to it and decline to levels normal for south Wales 1.5–6 km away, depending on direction. This relationship is largely confined to sites within the valley; samples from adjacent localities outside it have melanic frequencies within normal limits for the south Wales area. Maximum melanic phenotype frequencies in the Cynon Valley are far higher than any known from elsewhere in the species range in Europe, Asia and North America. No consistent difference is apparent in total melanic frequency between males and females at any of the sites in this study. However, marked differences exist between the sexes in the relative contributions of the eight melanic phenotypes to the overall association with the factory. For females the industrial melanism is entirely attributable to the group flanicollis + gibbus + leucocephalus (mainly leucocephalus) whereas in males both this group and the group quadnmaculatus + albomaculatus + leucopthalmus contribute to the relationship. It is suggested that this relationship is due to the selective effects of the local air pollution from the factory. The exact nature of the selection involved is as yet uncertain; it would appear to be strong since the local adaptation involved has developed in a maximum of 40 generations since the factory was opened. Finally, comparison is made with two other insects, a ladybird and a moth, in which high frequencies of melanic forms are also associated with this pollution source.  相似文献

  • 2 The role of thermal factors in the maintenance of the balanced polymorphism was investigated by measurements of dorsal reflectance and body temperature when artifically irradiated.
  • 3 Non-melanic forms had higher reflectances and showed lower temperature excesses when irradiated. There was considerable variation in reflectance for the populi–typicus morph group, and trilineatus is therefore the only true‘non-melanic’morph.
  • 4 For samples along altitudinal transects in three Scottish glens, trilineatus frequencies were found to be negatively and populi-typicus and melanic frequencies positively correlated with altitude.

Twenty-four large adult samples of the meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius , were collected from within a 4 times 3 km area containing Cardiff docks, south Wales. All samples are highly polymorphic for colour and pattern and show marked geographic variation in the combined frequency of the eight melanic morphs (from <15% to > 75%). Maximum melanic phenotype frequencies in both sexes coincide with dock wharfs currently containing large accumulations of pulverized coal and these samples are heavily contaminated with small coal particles. However, interpretation of this association is complicated by the existence, until 1976, of a smokeless fuel factory causing local air pollution immediately adjacent to the area of highest melanic frequency. It is suggested that the association of high levels of melanism in P. spumarius with areas heavily contaminated with particulate pollutants is due to direct selective effects of small particles favouring melanies.  相似文献

The endemic Tahiti reed‐warbler Acrocephalus caffer occurs in two distinct morphs, a typical or ‘yellow’ morph and a melanic or ‘dark’ morph, which are found together in the valleys of the eastern and central parts of the island of Tahiti (Society Islands, French Polynesia). We investigated the molecular basis of the plumage colour polymorphism in this species using sequences of the melanocortin‐1 receptor (MC1R), a gene often found associated to melanism in birds. We found that the MC1R genotype was perfectly associated with plumage colour in the Tahiti reed‐warbler, with the same nonsynonymous substitution that showed a correlation with phenotype in the Caribbean bananaquit Coereba flaveola. An heterozygous reed‐warbler at this site presented a melanic phenotype, suggesting that the melanic allele is dominant. All other Polynesian reed‐warbler species, which do not have a melanic morph, shared the ‘yellow’ nucleotide at this position. These results suggested that the same mutation point was linked to a melanic polymorphism in two unrelated passerine birds.  相似文献

Local populations of the adder, Vipera berus, are polymorphic for dorsal colour pattern, containing both melanistic (black) and zig-zag patterned individuals. Colour patterns in snakes influence crypsis and thermoregulatory capacity and therefore may be subjected to natural selection. To find an explanation for the maintenance of this polymorphism I examined temporal and spatial variation in morph frequency, and tested for differential selection among morphs using data from a six year capture-mark-recapture study. The data derive from six groups of islands in the Baltic Sea off the Swedish east coast, two mainland localities near the coast, and one inland locality. Morph frequency did not change over time within a population but varied among populations: melanistic individuals were not found at the inland locality, but comprised from 17 to 62% of the coastal and island populations. Adders frequently moved between islands within a group, but the tendency to disperse was independent of morph. These results suggest that the polymorphism is stable and maintained by a deterministic process. Scar frequency was twice as high among melanistic as among zig-zag snakes, and melanistic individuals were easier to capture, indicating that predation may be higher on the melanistic morph. Colour morphs did not differ in body size, but analysis of recapture data shows evidence for differential survival among morphs. Zig-zag males survived better than melanistic males, but the relative survival rates of morphs were reversed in females. This difference was consistent through time and may be due to sexual differences in behaviour, with melanism increasing predation intensity when associated with male but not with female behaviour. Opposing fitness consequences of colour pattern in the two sexes may help maintain colour polymorphism within populations of Vipera berus.  相似文献

Apochromic forms of the Eurasian Dactylorhiza incarnata s.l. were studied in northern Europe to reveal their genetic (allozyme) and morphological diversity and to assess their systematic significance. The study included eight localities with sympatric populations of plants with anthocyanin‐pigmented and apochromic flowers. Parallel samples of the two morphs were taken from each locality. Genetic variation was only found at the allozyme loci pgd, pgi and ugpp. Statistically significant differences in allele frequencies between the two colour morphs were found in two localities and demonstrate that the occurrence of apochromic individuals in D. incarnata s.l. is not always because of spontaneous mutation. At least in some localities the apochromic plants form distinct breeding groups (but local populations of different colour morphs may also be composed of several more or less distinct breeding groups). Based on molecular and morphometric data, it is proposed that the apochromic study populations from calcareous fens should be referred to D. incarnata var. ochroleuca, whereas the apochromic study populations from non‐calcareous fens are better treated as aberrant local populations of var. incarnata s.l. The neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma citrinellum is polymorphic in the structure of its pharyngeal jaw apparatus and external morphology. The pharyngeal jaws are either gracile and bear slender, pointed teeth (papilliform) or robust with strong, rounded teeth (molariform). Molariform morphs have a ‘benthic’, and papilliform morphs a ‘limnetic’ body form. Furthermore, this species is also polychromatic, with yellow and black morphs. The molariform morphology of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus adapts the fish for cracking and feeding on snails. Based on analysis of stomach contents, 94% of the molariform morph ate snails whereas only 19%, of the papilliform morph did so. This result suggests that the morphs occupy different ecological niches. The morphology of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus does not correlate significantly with sex, but it does with body colouration (P<0.005). Cichlasoma citrinellum mate assortatively with their own colour; therefore a mating preference for colour may lead to genetic isolation of trophic morphs. The frequency of the molariform morph differs strikingly among populations of five Nicaraguan lakes and its abundance is correlated with the abundance of snails, the fishes' principal prey item. Among populations the frequency of molariform morphs decreases in the dry season. Morphology possibly changes reversibly within particular individuals between seasons. These results suggest that phenotypic plasticity and polymorphisms may be an adaptive characteristic of cichlid fishes. Patterns of intraspecific morphological variation match patterns of interspecific morphological diversification which suggests that universal developmental mechanisms canalize the possible expressions of morphology. The ability to respond morphologically to environmental shifts, in conjunction with genetically determined trophic polymorphisms and sexual selection via mate choice, could be the basis for speciation through intermediate stages of polymorphism of the impressive adaptive radiation of cichlid fishes.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The light and melanic morphs of M.unipunctatus are described, their genetic inheritance considered, and their geographic distribution over a pollution gradient in Yorkshire is examined.
2. There is an obvious colour dimorphism. The light forms are disruptively patterned while the melanic forms are uniformly dark.
3. Genetic crosses indicate that the melanic character is inherited as a Mendelian dominant and that separate alleles, linked on the same chromosome, control the respective melanisms of the head-thorax and of the abdomen.

 Different high-Arctic, freshwater localities at Ny-A˚lesund, Svalbard (79°N) were examined for their UV-absorbing properties, depth and presence of melanic or non-melanic morphs of the planktonic crustacean Daphnia pulex. Light regimes in two localities with each of these morphs were measured by using underwater spectroradiometer. Most localities have low absorbance of short-waved light, but no clearcut relationship between UV transparency and occurrence of melanic morphs was detected. Yet, in the laboratory, the melanic morph showed far lower growth rates, thus being competitively inferior to the non-melanic. Conversely, the melanic morph was more resistant to UV light, suggesting a trade-off between the metabolic tax paid for the melanin synthesis and its UV-protecting abilities, or a staggered growth capacity possibly owing to polyploidy. Frequency of melanic or non-melanic clones could thus be directly linked to ambient UV-B stress and serve as an indicator thereof, but the apparently extensive need for UV protection under the Arctic light regimes is still puzzling, and the role of melanism and polyploidy in these organisms cannot be considered finally settled. The edible Ruspolia differens (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is an important source of food in East Africa, but the seasonality of its population dynamics and host plant use are not fully understood. We studied seasonal patterns in the population density and relative frequency of developmental stages, sexes, colour morphs and host plants of the non‐swarming R. differens at two study sites in central Uganda over 15 months. Linear mixed models were used to study how precipitation and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) predict population density and relative frequency of developmental stages, sexes, colour morphs and host plants. The results showed that all developmental stages of non‐swarming R. differens were found in the field throughout the year. The population densities of R. differens were high in wet seasons and low in dry seasons and were best predicted by the EVI of the previous month. The sex ratio of the non‐swarming R. differens populations was female biased. The proportion of males and green colour morphs increased during and after the rainy season. The use of host plants fluctuated seasonally so that during the greener seasons individuals used the more preferred host Panicum maximum more frequently. Overall, our work indicates that R. differens has a seasonal dynamic so that vegetation greenness can be used to forecast non‐swarming R. differens population densities. Our results also suggest that source populations for swarming individuals might have a local origin. This is important for the management of habitats for reproduction and conservation of viable populations of R. differens in East Africa.  相似文献

Variation in colour/pattern morph frequencies in Eupteryx urticae and E. cyclops is described for various field populations. Eupteryx urticae populations in S Wales exhibit a steep morph-ratio cline, such that black morph frequencies are positively correlated with altitude. High melanic frequencies at high-altitude sites, and the absence of the two darker morphs in lowland populations, suggest a similar trend in E. cyclops , but the data are insufficient to confirm this statistically. No differences in morph frequencies were detected on different parts of the primary host plant or on alternative host species. Similarly, there were no consistent trends within or between the two annual generations of either species, although melanic morph frequencies in one E. urticae population were heterogeneous over 10 generations. It is suggested that the polymorphism in E. urticae is strongly influenced by climate selection, darker morphs being at an advantage in cooler environments where their coloration enhances absorption of solar radiation. The advantage gained through thermal melanism is probably balanced by visual selection against black morphs by entomophagous parasitoids.  相似文献

Body size and coloration may contribute to variation in performance and fitness among individuals; for example, by influencing vulnerability to predators. Yet, the combined effect of size and colour pattern on susceptibility to visual predators has received little attention, particularly in camouflaged prey. In the colour polymorphic pygmy grasshopper Tetrix subulata (Linnaeus, 1758), females are larger than males, although there is a size overlap between sexes. In the present study, we investigated how body size and colour morph influenced detection of these grasshoppers, and whether differences in protective value among morphs change with size. We conducted a computer‐based experiment and compared how human ‘predators’ detected images of large, intermediate or small grasshoppers belonging to black, grey or striped colour morphs when embedded in photographs of natural grasshopper habitats. We found that time to detection increased with decreasing size, that differences in time to detection of the black, grey and striped morphs depended differently on body size, and that no single morph provided superior or inferior protection in all three size classes. By comparing morph frequencies in samples of male and female grasshoppers from natural populations, we also examined whether the joint effects of size and colour morph on detection could explain evolutionary dynamics in the wild. Morph frequency differences between sexes were largely in accordance with expectations from the results of the detection experiment. The results of the present study demonstrate that body size and colour morph can interactively influence detection of camouflaged prey. This may contribute to the morph frequency differences between male and female pygmy grasshoppers in the wild. The distribution of four variants for flower colour ofCrocus scepusiensis in the northern part of the Western Carpathians is described. The frequency of white stigmata morphs declines from east to west. In the center of the area stigmata colour morphs show strikingly patchy distribution. White perianth morphs usually occur at low frequencies and their distribution with minor exceptions is restricted to the central part of the area, where patchy distribution of the morphs is a rule. These distribution patterns suggest that the founder effect has played a major role in determining the genetic composition of individual populations. The cline for stigmata colour may also be explained by the dynamics of population expansion. No influence of selection can be demonstrated, but the association between perianth and stigmata colour, and the excessively low frequency of white perianth morphs may imply that the polymorphisms are not selectively neutral.  相似文献

Several morphotypes that so far have been attributed to the allegedly cosmopolitan ascidian Cystodytes dellechiajei occur in the Mediterranean Sea. Colour variation is the difference most frequently reported. In this study, we addressed the genetic structure of this ascidian in relation to geographical location and colour morph. Partial sequences of the gene cytochrome  c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) were obtained from seven populations of the western Mediterranean, encompassing eight colour varieties. All population genetic analyses (exact test, pairwise F ST, hierarchical analysis of molecular variance, multidimensional scaling, nested clade analysis) indicated clearly that differences between colour morphs are large enough to obscure any geographical differentiation when colours are combined within localities. When variance due to colour divergence was removed, however, a significant geographical variability between localities remained. The genetic divergence between the colour morphs analysed was significant in comparisons of the brown and purple forms with the others, but not among the green, blue, and white morphs. Phylogeographic analyses suggest that population fragmentation and range expansions have shaped the present-day distribution of the haplotypes. The frequency of females was determined for eight populations of the gynodioecious shrub, Hebe strictissima (Scrophulariaceae) and related to plant vigor among populations, as indicated by the average number of leaves per shoot. The purpose was to test the idea that females should be more prevalent in relatively poor sites where plant vigor is low. This hypothesis was based on sex-ratio theory, coupled with the idea that fruit-set in the polleniferous morph (i.e., in “males”) is more dependent on vigor than it is in females. I found that, within populations, females produced significantly more fruit than males and that plant vigor did not differ significantly between the sexes. Fruit-set on males was positively and significantly correlated with the number of leaves per shoot within plants, among plants within populations, and among populations. No such correlations were found for females. The greater plasticity of the males altered the relative seed fitnesses of the two morphs among the eight populations, resulting in a negative correlation between female frequency and average plant vigor. I suggest, in general, that such plasticity may be an important factor in sex-ratio variation among populations and that it should be incorporated into models of sex-ratio evolution.  相似文献

Cyclic parthenogenesis is the ancestral mode of reproduction in the cladoceran crustacean, Daphnia pulex, but some populations have made the transition to obligate parthenogenesis and this is the only mode of reproduction known to occur in arctic populations. Melanism and polyploidy are also common in arctic populations of this species. Prior allozyme studies of arctic D. pulex revealed substantial levels of clonal diversity on a regional scale. Clonal groupings based on cluster analysis of allozyme genotypes do not conform to groupings based on the presence/absence of melanin or on ploidy level. In order to further elucidate genetic relationships among arctic D. pulex clones, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation was examined in 31 populations from two Canadian high-arctic sites. The data were also compared to a previous study of mtDNA variation in populations from a Canadian low-arctic site. Cladistic analysis of restriction site variation of the entire mitochondrial genome and nucleotide sequence variation of the mitochondrial control region was used to construct genetic relationships among mitochondrial genotypes. Three distinct mitochondrial lineages were detected. One lineage was associated with diploid, nonmelanic clones and is the same as the lineage that is found in temperate populations of D. pulex. The other two lineages (A & B) were associated with polyploid, melanic clones. Sequence divergence between the A and B lineages was 2.4%. Sequence divergence between D. pulex and either of these two lineages exceeded 3%. It is suggested that the melanic, polyploid clones are hybrids between males of D. pulex (and/or a closely related congener, D. pulicaria) and females of either of two ancestral melanic species that have mitochondrial lineages A and B. Geographic patterns of mitochondrial diversity in ‘melanic’ lineage B support the hypothesis of an high-arctic refuge for the ancestral species during the last glacial period.  相似文献

Females of Lampropholis delicata are dimorphic for colour pattern, the difference between morphs being the presence or absence of a distinct white mid-lateral stripe. A less distinct striped morph occurs also in males. We evaluated alternative hypotheses for the maintenance of this polymorphism by examining temporal and spatial variation in morph frequency, testing for differential selection among morphs using data on body size and reproductive traits from preserved specimens, and experimentally manipulating colour pattern in free-ranging lizards of both sexes, to assess the influence of the lateral stripe on survival rates. We found that the relative frequency of striped individuals varied among populations and decreased from north to south in both sexes, coincident with an increasing incidence of regenerated tails. Morph frequencies did not change through time within a population. Striped gravid females appeared to survive better and produced larger clutches than did non-striped females. In our experimental study, the relationship between survival and colour morph differed between the two sexes; males painted with a white lateral stripe had lower survival than control (brown stripe) males, but survival did not differ between striped and control females. The different response in the two sexes may be due partly to differences in temperature and microhabitat selection. We propose that the white lateral stripe decreases susceptibility to predators in gravid females but increases risk of predation in males, especially in combination with low temperatures. The polymorphism might be maintained by: (1) opposing fitness consequences of the stripe in males and females; (2) sex-specific habitat selection; and (3) gene flow in combination with spatial variation in relative fitness of the two morphs.  相似文献

The empirical reasons for the persistent rarity of a genotype are typically complex and tedious to identify, particularly in nature. Yet rare morphs occur in a substantial fraction of phenotypic polymorphisms. A colour polymorphism has persisted for decades in the eastern mosquitofish, yet why this is so remains obscure. Here, I report the results of (1) intensive sampling at 45 natural sites to obtain the frequency distribution of the melanic (black) mosquitofish morph in Florida, (2) predation trials, conducted independently in mesocosms, with three different predatory species and (3) two mark-recapture studies, conducted in nature. This work (1) documents the rarity of melanic mosquitofish in nature, (2) demonstrates that melanic males experience a selective advantage over silver males in the presence of predators, (3) indicates no difference in the colour morphs' survival at a natural site essentially devoid of these predators, although suggesting a higher rate of recapture for melanic males at a site rife with predators. Overall, selective predation appears to contribute to the persistence of the melanic morph, despite its rarity in nature.  相似文献

The Gulf of California endemic reef fish, Acanthemblemaria crockeri (Blennioidei, Chaenopsidae), reportedly has two colour morphs, one with melanic lateral spots ('Gulf' morph) and one with orange spots ('Cape' morph). In this study, we recorded colour morph in both males and females and collected mitochondrial DNA sequence data for cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and tRNA-Pro/D-loop of specimens from throughout the Gulf to explore the genetic basis of the colour morphs. Two highly divergent (HKY + I distance = 11.9% for COI), reciprocally monophyletic lineages were identified, consistent with the presence of two parapatric species. A 30-km gap between the distributions of mitochondrial lineages roughly corresponds to a hypothesized former seaway across the Baja California peninsula north of La Paz, although the estimated divergence time (1.84 million years ago) is more recent than the hypothetical seaway (3–4 million years ago). Surprisingly, the distribution of mitochondrial species is not congruent with the distribution of either male or female colour morphs. Our analysis also revealed significant population differentiation within both species and no shared haplotypes among populations. The northern Gulf species includes four populations (NB, CB, NM and CM) corresponding to northern and central Baja and northern and central mainland sites, while the Cape species includes two populations (SB and SM) corresponding to the Baja and mainland sides of the southern Gulf. The NB/CB division corresponds to a hypothesized Plio–Pleistocene mid-peninsular seaway. The level of genetic divergence documented in this lineage is extraordinary for a marine fish with a pelagic larval stage within a semi-enclosed basin.  相似文献
