The seasonal abundance of epilithic algae was correlated with major physico-chemical parameters in a first-order, heavily shaded stream in northern Arizona. Diatoms made up over 85%, by numerical abundance, of the epilithon community Light energy, water temperature, and stream discharge were most highly correlated with seasonal abundance of epilithic diatom taxa when analyzed with stepwise multiple regression. None of the chemical variables measured in the study (NO3-N, O-PO4, SiO2, including PH) was found to be significantly correlated with the seasonal community structure of epilithic diatoms. Total diatom cell densities showed a significant negative correlation to stream bed light energy. Likewise, total diatom cell densities along a transect in the stream bed showed a negative correlation to current velocity during those months when base flow was low and stable, and current velocity was ≤25 cm·sec-1. Most diatom taxa had highest cell densities at temperatures < 16°C and at daily mean stream bed light levels < 400 μE·m?2·s?1. Highest cell densities of green algae occurred at temperatures between 6–16°C and at daily mean stream bed light levels of > 400 μE·m?2·s?1. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) grew best at the highest recorded water temperatures and daily mean stream bed light energy (16–20°C and 900–1200 μE·m?2·s?1). Abrupt increases in NO3-N coincided with a brief pulse of Nostoc pruniforme colonies during June, and leaf drop from Alnus oblongifolia during October.  相似文献

Biomass, chemical composition, growth rates and the photosynthetic response of natural populations of sea ice algae in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica were followed over most of the spring bloom to examine temporal variability under a relatively constant incident irradiance (ca. 1500–1700 μE · m-2· s-1 at solar noon). Collection were restricted to bottom 20 cm of the ice sheet in an area with little or no snow (0–5 cm). At low temperature and irradiance these algae normally exhibited low assimilation numbers (ca. 0.1–0.4 mg C · mg Chl-1· h-1). Average growth rates (0.02–0.45 d-1), based on changes in standing stocks, were also low. Biomass, biochemical composition, growth rates, assimilation numbers and photosynthetic efficiencies (mg C · mg Chl-1· h-1 (μE · m-2· s-1)-1) displayed large fluctuations over periods of several days during the growth season. On the other hand, Ik which is an index of photoadaptation, and Im, the optimal irradiance for photosynthesis, were relatively constant with less than twofold variation throughout our study. Substantial nutrient fluxes (3.3–8.0 mmol Si or N · m-2· d-1) were necessary to satisfy the minimum nutrient demand for the observed biomass levels and population growth rates; over the 41 days of our study, integrated nutrient demand represented 69–150 mmol N or Si · m-2, Only 5–25% of this total demand could be met by all of the nutrients in the ice sheet, if they were readily available. However, adequate amounts were present in the top few meters of the water column. With small nutrient gradients in surface waters below the sea ice, vertical eddy diffusivities on the order of 3.8–9.3 cm2· s- should supply sufficient nutrients to meet algal demand.  相似文献

Fifty algae from seven phyla have been examined in order to determine whether they contain protein-bound hydroxyproline and whether this hydroxyproline is concentrated in the cell wall. Green algae, with the exception of Nitella, all contain hydroxyproline, and in most cases it is concentrated in the cell wall. Hydroxyproline is also present in low levels in the brown algae, but here it is concentrated in the soluble proteins. Red algae contain no hydroxyproline. The presence of hydroxyproline in blue-green algae is variable, but when present the levels are low. It appears, then, that the major algal phyla differ with respect to the distribution and occurrence of hydroxyproline-proteins.  相似文献

Varying concentrations of Fe were tested with three hydroxamate siderophores to demonstrate the interactions affecting growth of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chlorella vulgaris. Schizokinen was purified from the excretions of the blue-green alga Anabaena sp. grown in low-Fe medium. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was inhibited by schizokinen when in molar excess of the Fe concentration; the inhibition was overcome with excess Fe. The growth of C. vulgaris was not affected by this chelator. Results with desferrioxamine were similar. A weaker chelator, rhodorulic acid, did not inhibit the growth of either alga. Low concentrations of the chelators may stimulate algal growth when Fe precipitates are hydrolyzed. Since different algae respond differently to the presence of the chelators, the observed interactions could be important in determining competitive relationships when Fe is limiting. If an alga can excrete a strong chelating agent, as does Anabaena, algae lacking the ability to compete with the chelator may not grow.  相似文献

Algal community structure is described for a deep-water rock pinnacle in the Gulf of Maine. Three depth zones of algal dominance were apparent consisting of 1) leathery macrophytes (to 40 m), 2) foliose red algae (to 50 m) and 3) crustose algae (fleshy crusts to 55 m and coralline crusts to 63 m). Microscopic filamentous and erect calcareous algae were also present but inconspicuous. Upright macroscopic filamentous and thin sheet-like forms were not observed on the pinnacle. Sea anemones (Metridium senile) dominated some vertical faces and abrupt prominences in the shallowest regions of the pinnacle (to 24 m) and locally appeared to set the upper vertical limits of kelp and possibly foliose reds. Laminaria sp. formed an open park-like canopy from 24 to 30 m whereas Agarum cribrosum, the deepest kelp, grew as isolated individuals to 40 m. Peyssonnelia sp. and Leptophytum laeve were the deepest occurring fleshy (to 55 m) and calcareous crusts (to 63 m), respectively. The occurrence of these algae at record depths for the Gulf of Maine and for cold water marine environments may be the result of an absence of large herbivores and the high productivity potential of the benthos in these relatively clear waters. By compiling data on depth distribution patterns world-wide, it is evident that the three zone structure of algal morphologies observed in the Gulf of Maine is a global phenomenon.  相似文献

We examined the temperature tolerance of microscopic phases from geographically disjunct isolates of eight species or closely related, putatively conspecific taxa of temperate brown algae with disjunct distributions. Maximum within-taxon differences were small and ranged from 1.6° to 4.3° C. Desmarestia aculeata and Sphaerotrichia divaricata, both with northern hemisphere amphioceanic distributions, showed little or no significant intraspecific variation between the mean upper survival limits (USL) of Atlantic and Pacific strains (δUSL ≤ 1.4°C), which would agree with a relatively recent separation of the respective populations. Among the plants with bipolar distributions, there was likewise very little difference (δUSL 0–1.1°C) between northern and southern hemisphere strains in Striaria attenuata and in the species pair Desmarestia viridis/D. willii. In Desmarestia ligulata, and in the species pairs Desmarestia firma/D. munda, Dictyosiphon foeniculaceus/D. hirsutus, and Scytothamnus australis/Scytothamnus sp., significant differences occurred, which indicate longer divergence times. δUSL in these cases ranged from 1.7° to 2.7°C, without overlap between strains from the northern and southern hemispheres. All species that passed the equator during cooler epochs had a USL of 26–27°C, at least in some geographical isolates. The NE Asian kelp Undaria pinnatifida, which passed the equator in recent times, had a USL of 29.6°C. We hypothesize that the mechanism of spreading in the amphipolar species studied was migration of vegetative microthalli. The more unlikely alternative hypothesis of continuous populations through the tropics during a cooler epoch would imply a drop in seawater temperatures to approximately 20° C in summer and 15° C in winter, which is not supported by paleoclimatic evidence.  相似文献

于2015年3月到7月在湖北省内多处水体采集浮游藻类样品,通过光学显微镜观察样品形态,共鉴定出团藻目群体鞭毛类3科5属8种。其中四豆藻科Tetrabaenaceae Nozaki et Itoh为中国新记录科,四豆藻属Tetra-baena(Dujardin)Fromentel和似团藻属Volvulina Playfair为中国新记录属,发现了5个新记录种分别为简单四豆藻Tetrabaena socialis(Dujardin)Nozaki et Itoh、科尔曼实球藻Pandorina colemaniae Nozaki、致密似团藻Vol-vulina compacta Nozaki、柱状空球藻Eudorina cylindrical Korshikov和单果空球藻Eudorina unicocca Smith。基于3种分子标记进行的系统发育分析验证了各样品的形态学鉴定;同时四豆藻科、盘藻科和团藻科均为单系类群,进一步支持了Nozaki的分类系统。  相似文献

Four axenic strains of snow algae were examined for optimum pH under laboratory conditions using M-1 growth medium. Growth was measured using cell counts, cell measurements and absorbance readings at 440 nm. Strains C204 and C479A of Chloromonas sp. from the Adirondack Mountains, New York, grew optimally at pH 4.0 to 5.0. Strains C381F and C381G, Chloromonas polyptera (Fritsch) Hoh., Mull. & Roem. from the White Mountains, Arizona, grew optimally at pH 4.5 to 5.0. Growth was significantly higher at pH 4.0 in the northeastern species (Chloromonas sp.), but no significant difference was observed in final growth at pH 4.5, 5.0 and 5.5 between species. It is postulated that the more acidic precipitation in the northeastern United States may be selecting for strains of snow algae with greater tolerance to acidity than in strains from the southwestern United States or that the different pH optima reported are simply species differences. New York strain C204 was also grown in heavily buffered AM medium where it had an optimum pH of 5.0, but cells became irregularly shaped and tended to clump at pH 6.0 to 7.0. Growth of C204 in AM medium was significantly lower than in M-1 medium for snow algae. These findings justify the use of M-1 medium for this type of experimentation.  相似文献

Karyogamy was inhibited by heat stress in zygotes of Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngbye) Link (isogamy), Cutleria cylindrica Okamura (anisogamy), and Fucus distichus subsp. evanescens (C. Agardh) Powell (oogamy). Although high temperatures did not inhibit migration of the male and female nuclei, nuclear envelope fusion was blocked. The ultrastructural stage at which karyogamy was inhibited varied among these species. In S. lomentaria, the outer membranes fused with each other, but the inner membranes did not fuse. Partial fusion of the nuclear envelope occurred in C. cylindrica. In F. distichus, the block of karyogamy at high temperature was incomplete, and nuclear fusion proceeded gradually. The block to karyogamy in S. lomentaria zygotes was reversible, and karyogamy proceeded when zygotes were transferred from 22° to 14° C. Experiments using inhibitors suggested that proteins that might be formed de novo after fertilization do not participate in karyogamy or its inhibition at either 14° or 22° C.  相似文献

Temperature and photon flux density (PFD) vary independently in estuaries, e.g. high PFD may occur at any temperature, so it is necessary to consider synergistic effects of these factors on algal growth. Because natural PFD is highly variable and daylength changes confound seasonal temperature cycles, it is easier to interpret factorial experiments in controlled laboratory conditions. Clonal Ulva rotundata Blid. (Chlorophyta) has been studied extensively in outdoor culture. In this study it was maintained indoors under square wave photoperiods at five PFDs and three temperatures. Growth rate, photqsynthetic light response (P-I) curves, and photosystem II chlorophyll fluorescence properties were measured at the growth temperature following acclimation. Interactions between PFD and growth temperature were strongly indicated in all physiological parameters measured. Greatest PFD response occurred at the highest temperature, and the largest temperature response occurred at the highest PFD. Light-saturated photosynthesis (Pm) dark respiration (Rd), and light-limited quantum yield (Φm) were sufficient to describe acclimation status. The light-saturation parameter (Ik) was redundant and potentially misleading. Although U. rotundata exhibits a great amplitude of photoacclimation, it apparently has little capacity for temperature acclimation compared to the kelp, Laminaria saccharina, for which published data indicate similar photosynthetic rates over a broad range of growth temperatures. Diurnal variation of Pm and Rd at a growth PFD of ~ 1700 ± 200 μmol photons · m?2· s?1 was similar to the pattern observed previously in outdoor culture, suggesting endogenous control of these parameters. Quantum yield and the ratio of variable to maximum chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), which were depressed in midday sunlight exceeding ~ 1500 μmol photons · m?2· s?1, were relatively invariant through the day in indoor culture, indicating that these parameters are controlled primarily by instantaneous PFD. Growth and fluorescence data are also presented for some other macroalgae for comparative purposes.  相似文献

Four species of bluegreen algae were tested for possible effect on the protozoan Paramecium caudatum Ehrenberg. Toxicity was demonstrated using lyophilized cells of Fischerella epiphytica Ghose and Gloeotrichia echinulata (Smith) Richter. Nostoc linckia (Roth) Bornet & Thuret failed to show any effects when lyophilized but became toxic when sonified. Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyngb.) Bréb. was nontoxic in all tests. G. echinulata was lethal at 0.1 mg·ml?1 which is comparable to the toxic concentration of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs reported for microcrustaceans.  相似文献

A SCUBA diver, using a bar-clamp sampler, collected quantitative epilithic algae samples from artificial substrates (slate and acrylic plates) and river stones at two stations on the Susquehanna River bottom in 1974. At Falls, Pennsylvania, algal colonization on monthly plates (submerged for ca. 30 day periods) was most rapid between September and October. In winter, when algal density on cumulative plates (submerged 2–13 mo) and on stones present in the river peaked at 18,100 and 21,900 units/ mm2, respectively, colonization of clean monthly plates nearly ceased. Similar colonization patterns were observed in a portion of the river polluted by coal mine drainages (SSES), but expansion of the algae population at SSES was inhibited by iron in the effluents, and densities never exceeded 2,400 units/mm2 on stones or plates. Diatoms composed 95% of the overall standing crop at Falls and 65% at SSES.  相似文献

phosphorus-limited chemostats were used to study the effect of degree of phosphorus deficiency on several aspects of the composition and metabolism of Anabaena variabilis Kütz. and Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) Bréb. The changes as a function of the dilution rate could be placed into 3 patterns. Most aspects of the composition showed it progressive change with dilution rate. The carbohydrate content generally increased while cellular P and nitrogen, protein, nucleic acid and chlorophyll contents generally decreased over the entire range of increasing deficiency studied. The changes in metabolism fell into a second pattern, showing great sensitivity to the onset of P deficiency. The ability to take up phosphate and the alkaline phosphatase activity increased most markedly with increasing deficiency at the higher dilution rates. The third pattern was confined to the, lipid content of S. quadricauda, which increased with deficiency only at the lowest dilution rates.  相似文献

塔里木盆地塔北隆起轮南46井、英买1、2井奥陶纪石灰岩内含有大量的钙藻化石、蓝细菌以及疑难微体化石。这些钻井岩芯均在深达5000-6200m的地下深部取得。钙藻主要为绿藻类的Dasyporella,Ver‘miporella,Moniliporella以及?Plexa;红藻类的管孔藻类Solenoporaceans;钙化蓝细菌则有Girvanella,Botomaella,?Subtifloria等;疑难微体化石有Bevocastria,Nuia,Rothpletzella。这些钙藻生活于热带或亚热带正常盐度的浅海水内,其水深不到20m。世界各地的奥陶纪Vermiporella均位于古赤道的两侧,这表明它们是在气候炎热、温暖海水中生活的一类海洋藻类。Girvanella以藻灰结核和内碎屑最为常见,某些球粒可能代表Girvanella破碎后形成的单管或小棒。塔里木盆地钙藻植物群相似于哈萨克斯坦、波罗的海周围地区以及北美同时代植物群,这表明这些钙藻和蓝细菌化石具有遍布于全球的性质。塔北隆起早、中奥陶世沉积属于典型的碳酸盐岩台地相沉积。到晚奥陶世时,碳酸盐岩沉积被浅水陆棚沉积所取代,以陆源碎屑岩为主,夹少量的碳酸盐岩。  相似文献

Multi-L-arginyl-poly(L-aspartic acid) [arg-poly(asp)], the polypeptide component of the cyanophycin inclusion body, is found in cells of many blue-green algae. Formation of this material can be induced by a variety of treatments including the addition of excess nitrogen-containing compounds, the addition of specific inhibitors of macromolecular synthesis, and the exclusion of sulfur or phosphorus. Knowledge of the conditions that induce the synthesis of this polypeptide has made possible an ultrastructural survey to determine the presence and cellular location of cyanophycin bodies in a variety of cyanobacteria. Data presented show that certain strains of the unicellular genus Synechococcus Nägeli do not contain arg-poly(asp) under environmental conditions that markedly increase the level of such material in other cyanobacteria. In addition many strains show spatial localization of the cyanophycin bodies under normal growth conditions, and moreover the normal pattern is retained even when massive synthesis of arg-poly(asp) is induced. Finally there is no evidence that these inclusion bodies occur in certain beggiatoan gliding bacteria.  相似文献

Most industrial and agricultural enterprises of the Kamchatsky district are situated along the coast of the Avacha Bay and its river drainage. Intensive water pollution resulted in extreme deterioration of the bay's ecology. The destruction of macrophytobenthos under the influence of pollution was investigated. Materials were regularly collected at the same sampling sites in different seasons of the year from 1988 up to 1999. Analysis of our data allowed us to determine directions of long-term changes of species composition and macrophytobenthos structure, speed of degradation of different types of vegetational communities and reasons for all these processes. The Avacha Bay's flora consisted of more than 160 species up to 1970s, including species belonged to 104 genera, 47 families, 23 orders, 3 divisions (30 Chlorophyta, 48 Phaeophyta, 82 Rhodophyta). Flora of the internal part of the bay differed from that of the bay's mouth and consisted of 143 and 146 species, respectively. Presently, the whole flora of the bay (internal part+ throat) includes only 94 species. Along the urban coast 18 poly- and mesosaprobious species are found only. They are characterized by small sizes, low productivity and short life cycles. Most of them are ephemeral with a primitive morphology. The responsive reaction of algae to pollution resulted in decreases in size and weight of the thalli, and appearance of anomalies of development. Laminaria bongardiana was used as a bioindicator. The changes of weight and sizes of its plants allow us to determine degree of the pollution in different parts of the coast of the Avacha Bay.  相似文献

Effects of light and temperature on growth of two freshwater photosynthetic cryptophytes of different cell size were studied in batch cultures. For the smaller Cryptomonas 979/67, Steele's model and equation of Platt et al. described the relationship between growth rate and photon flux density (PFD), whereas a hyperbolic tangent function gave a better fit for the larger Cryptomonas 979/62. Maximum growth rates given by the three models were consistent with each other, but the hyperbolic tangent function gave slightly lower estimates. Maximum growth rates in relation to temperature were well described for both species by the model of Logan et al. The optimum temperature for growth for Cryptomonas 979/67 was ca. 24.5° C and 19.0° C for Cryptomonas 979/62. The lethal temperatures were 30.4° C and 23.1° C for 979/67 and 979/62, respectively. The estimated maximum growth rates were 1.38 div.·day?1 for Cryptomonas 979/67 and 0.87 div.·day ?1 for Cryptomonas 979/62. There were interspecific differences in photoadaptation strategies, as Cryptomonas 979/67 required relatively high PFDs to show net growth, whereas Cryptomonas 979/62 grew at lower irradiances. Cryptomonas 979/67 showed photoinhibition soon after the saturation point, but Cryptomonas 979/62 tolerated a much wider range of irradiance. From their growth responses to light, Cryptomonas 979/ 67 appears to be a stenotopic and Cryptomonas 979/ 62 a eurytopic strain.  相似文献

The temperature requirement for growth and the upper survival temperatures (USTs) of 15 Antarctic red algal species collected on King George Island (South Shetland Islands) and Signy Island (South Orkney Islands) were determined. Two groups with different temperature requirements were identified. 1) A “eurythermal” group includes Rhodymenia subantarctica, Phyllophora ahnfeltioides, Gymnogongrus antarcticus, and Rhodochorton purpureum, growing between 0° and 10°C with optimum values at (0°) 5°(l0°)C. The USTs of these species and of Porphyra endiviifolium, Delesseria lancifolia, and Bangia atropurpurea were between 22° and 16°C. These species survived temperatures in a similar range as most endemic Arctic or Arctic/cold-temperate species but exhibited a lower temperature demand for growth, suggesting an earlier contact with low temperatures than Arctic species. 2) A stenothermal group includes Pantoneura plocamioides, Myriogramme mangini, Ballia callitricha, Phyllophora antarctica, Gigartina skottsbergii, Georgiella confluens, and Plocamium cartilagineum growing at 0° or ≤5°C with optimum values at 0° or 5°C. The USTs of these species and of Phycodrys austrogeorgica were between 14° and 7°C. The species of this group must have had an even earlier contact with the Antarctic cold-water environment than species of the “eurythermal” group. Gigartina skottsbergii, Georgiella confluens, Plocamium cartilagineum, and Pantoneura plocamioides were probably exposed longer to low temperatures than the other species of this group or Antarctic green and brown algae because they show the lowest temperature requirements so far determined in seaweeds. The results are discussed in the context of present local temperature regimes at the localities where the isolates were collected. Moreover, an attempt was made to explain the geographic distribution of individual species by the temperature requirements determined in this study. Only a few of the distribution limits are determined by temperature growth and/or survival characteristics. In many species (Rhodymenia subantarctica, Ballia callitricha, Gigartina skottsbergii, Bangia atropurpurea, Rhodochorton purpureum, and Plocamium cartilagineum), the development of temperature ecotypes is evident.  相似文献
