A routine sampling technique has been developed using artificial styrofoam substrate to estimate benthic algal productivity in the littoral zone of lakes. Estimation of maximum carbon fixed in Lake Tahoe ranged from 11.1 mg C·m?2· day?1 at 0.5 m to 17.1 mg C·m?2· day?1 at 1.0 m. Estimates were made for communities composed of both diatom and green algal populations in water between 0.5 and 3.0 m. Maximum productivity occurred between 1–2 m. The technique developed can give comparable estimates of productivity if adequate replication is undertaken to decrease problems associated with periphytic heterogeneity.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were used to examine how variation in the density of spore settlement influences gametophyte growth, reproduction, and subsequent sporophyte production in the kelps Pterygophora californica Ruprecht and Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag. In still (non-aerated) cultures, egg maturation in both species was delayed when spores were seeded at densities 300 · mm?2. Although the density at which this inhibition was first observed was similar for both species, the age at which their eggs matured was not. P. californica females reached sexual maturity an average of 4 days (or ~ 30%) sooner than did M, pyrifera. As observed previously in field experiments, per capita sporophyte production was negatively density dependent for both species when seeded at spore densities of 10 · mm?2. Total sporophyte production (i.e. number · cm?2) for both species, however, was greatest at intermediate densities of spore settlement (~ 50 spores · mm?2). In contrast, total sporophyte production by P. californica steadily increased with increasing spore density in aerated cultures; highest sporophyte density was observed on slides seeded at a density of 1000 spores · mm?2. Preliminary experiments with P. californica involving manipulation of aeration and nutrients indicate that inhibition of gametophyte growth and reproduction at higher densities of spore settlement in non-aerated cultures was probably caused by nutrient limitation.  相似文献

Extensive blooms of the autotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum (Lohmann) occurred in the Peru coastal upwelling region at 15°S latitude in March through May 1977 and contributed significantly to the organic productivity of the region. From observations made during the JOINT-II oceanographic expedition, a budget of the carbon flux of these unusual photosynthetic organisms can be constructed. The light dependent C fixation was determined with short (1 h) incubations because of the organisms' sensitivity to confinement and rapid nutrient exhaustion. Maximum photosynthesis occurred at 50% of incident light with a maximum rate of particulate C synthesis of 2187 mg C · m?3· h?1. The specific carbon uptake rates were also high with a maximum light saturated value of 16.8 mg C ·(mg chl a)?1· h?1. The rate of excretion of dissolved organic C at the productivity maximum ranged from 16.1 to 181.1 mg C · m?3· h?1. The range of percent excretion was 1.8–12.5% the total C fixed, similar to the range found in both motile and nonmotile phytoplankton assemblages. Respiration, determined by the decrease in particulate C in the dark, averaged 4.6% of the previously fixed photosynthetic C · h?1. M. rubrum actively took up amino acids and naturally occurring dissolved organic carbon. The C budget for this ciliate indicates that the daily contribution to the particulate food chain is large, although not as great as is indicated by short incubations. The contribution of M. rubrum to the productivity and elemental fluxes of upwelling and coastal ecosystems has been seriously underestimated.  相似文献

Clones of Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cl. isolated from Narragansett Bay, R.I., during different seasons were grouped according to their electrophoretic banding patterns. The growth rates, pg chlorophyll · cell?1, carbon uptake · cell?1· h?1, and carbon uptake · pg chl?1· h?1 were measured at 20°C, in a 14:10 h L:D cycle at 180 μE · m?2· s?1. Statistically significant sources of variation were found among groups of clones in growth rate, pg chl · cell?1, and carbon uptake · pg chl?1· h?1. It was concluded that there is a significant relationship between the physiological characteristics of clones isolated from populations in different seasons and patterns of genetic variation inferred from the electrophoretic studies. However, genetic diversity detected by banding patterns tends to underestimate the total genetic diversity in natural populations. The groups of clones most common in summer bloom populations had significantly higher growth rates, lower values of pg chl · cell?1, and higher rates of carbon uptake · pg chl?1· h?1 at 20°C than did the group of clones most common in winter bloom populations. However, differences among groups in these parameters at 20°C alone cannot account for the seasonal cycling of genetically variable populations of Skeletonema in Narragansett Bay. The range of growth rates among clones of this species is 0.1–5.0 divisions · d?1 under a single set of temperature and light conditions. Chlorophyll concentrations range from 0.2–1.7 pg chl · cell?1 and carbon uptake · pg chl?1· h?1 varies by a factor of 7 among clones. The range of physiological variation in this species means that it is difficult to use laboratory studies of single clones to analyze the responses of natural populations of Skeletonema.  相似文献

In Greenland, free‐living red coralline algae contribute to and dominate marine habitats along the coastline. Lithothamnion glaciale dominates coralline algae beds in many regions of the Arctic, but never in Godthåbsfjord, Greenland, where Clathromorphum sp. is dominant. To investigate environmental impacts on coralline algae distribution, calcification and primary productivity were measured in situ during summers of 2015 and 2016, and annual patterns of productivity in L. glaciale were monitored in laboratory‐based mesocosm experiments where temperature and salinity were manipulated to mimic high glacial melt. The results of field and cold‐room measurements indicate that both L. glaciale and Clathromorphum sp. had low calcification and photosynthetic rates during the Greenland summer (2015 and 2016), with maximum of 1.225 ± 0.17 or 0.002 ± 0.023 μmol CaCO 3 · g?1 · h?1 and ?0.007 ±0.003 or ?0.004 ± 0.001 mg O2 · L?1 · h?1 in each species respectively. Mesocosm experiments indicate L. glaciale is a seasonal responder; photosynthetic and calcification rates increase with annual light cycles. Furthermore, metabolic processes in L. glaciale were negatively influenced by low salinity; positive growth rates only occurred in marine treatments where individuals accumulated an average of 1.85 ± 1.73 mg · d?1 of biomass through summer. These results indicate high freshwater input to the Godthåbsfjord region may drive the low abundance of L glaciale , and could decrease species distribution as climate change increases freshwater input to the Arctic marine system via enhanced ice sheet runoff and glacier calving.  相似文献

The susceptibility to photoinhibition of tree species from three different successional stages were examined using chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange techniques. The three deciduous broadleaf tree species were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, pioneer and early successional, Quercus mongolica, intermediate shade‐tolerant and mid‐successional, and Acer mono, shade‐tolerant and late successional. Tree seedlings were raised under three light regimes: full sunlight (open), 10% full sun, and 5% full sun. Susceptibility to photoinhibition was assessed on the basis of the recovery kinetics of the ratio of vaviable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) of detached leaf discs exposed to about 2000 μmol m?1 s?1 photon flux density (PFD) for 2 h under controlled conditions (25 to 28 °C, fully hydrated). Differences in susceptibility to photodamage among species were not significant in the open and 10% full sun treatments. But in 5% full sun, B. platyphylla sustained a significantly greater photodamage than other species, probably associated with having the lowest photosynthetic capacity indicated by light‐saturated photosynthetic rate (B. platyphylla, 9·87, 5·85 and 2·82; Q. mongolica, 8·05, 6·28 and 4·41; A. mono, 7·93, 6·11 and 5·08 μmol CO2 m?1 s?1for open, 10% and 5% full sun, respectively). To simulate a gap formation and assess its complex effects including high temperature and water stress in addition to strong light on the susceptibility to photoinhibition, we examined photoinhibition in the field by means of monitoring ΔF/Fm on the first day of transfer to natural daylight. Compared with ΔF/Fm in AM, the lower ΔF/Fm in PM responding to lower PFD following high PFD around noon indicated that photoinhibition occurred in plants grown in 10 and 5% full sun. The diurnal changes of ΔF/Fm showed that Q. mongolica grown in 5% full sun was less susceptible to photoinhibition than A. mono although they showed little differences both in photosynthetic capacity in intact leaves and susceptibility to photoinhibition based on leaf disc measurements. These results suggest that shade‐grown Q. mongolica had a higher tolerance for additional stresses such as high temperature and water stress in the field, possibly due to their lower plasticity in leaf anatomy to low light environment.  相似文献

Bacterioplanktonic biomass and production in the river Meuse (Belgium)   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
This paper presents results of bacterial biomass determination by epifluorescence microscopy after acridine orange staining and 3H-thymidine incorporation measurements in the river Meuse. Bacterial production is calculated from thymidine incorporation using an experimental conversion factor (0.5 1018 bacterial cells produced per mole of thymidine incorporated into macromolecules). Seasonal variations of bacterial biomass and production at two stations are presented. Biomass ranges between 0.05 mgC · 1−1 (in winter) and 0.8 mgC · 1−1 (in summer). The variations of bacterial production seem to be closely linked to those of primary production; values lower than 1 μgC · 1−1 · h−1 are found in winter and high values (> 5 μgC 1−1 · h −1) in summer. Longitudinal profiles in the Belgian course of the river show important increase of biomass and production from upstream to downstream. Bacterial growth yield (Y) has been determined (Y = 0.3) in order to calculate bacterial carbon uptake from bacterial production.  相似文献

A typical marl lake of the Upper Great Lakes region has very few quantitatively important aquatic macrophytes. The macrophytes, however, dominate the total primary production of the lake. Submersed vegetation is extremely sparse on the shallow (less than I m) marl bench that characterizes the littoral of these lakes, and is completely dominated by one. little-known species (Scirpus subterminalis Torr.) between 1 and 7 m. A detailed investigation of the spatial and seasonal distribution of macrophytic species and biomass showed that S. subterminalis strongly dominated the lake (79% of total biomass). S. suhterminalis represented an almost pure stand (to 200 g m?2 mean annual ash-free dry weight) at all times of the year at intermediate depths of macrophytic growth (1–6 m). Two species of Chara (of eight varieties and forms) were present in significant quantities (12% of total biomass; to 100 g m?2) but were severely limited to shallow depths (0-S-l m) and protected areas. Several annual submersed angiosperms were present (9% of total biomass), but only two species were quantitatively important. Potamogeton illinoensis Morong. and P. praelongus Wulfen formed brief summer peaks (less than 100 g m?2) at 3 and 4–6 m, respectively. A striking feature of the seasonal biomass distribution of Scirpus subterminalis was the higher, viable biomass (to 150g m?2) throughout the winter under ice cover. Cyclic fluctuations of the S. subterminalis populations were discerned at different depths, each with different periodicities. The population at 2 m exhibited a fall peak; that at 4 m had a summer maximum. The lowest overall biomass of S. subterminalis occurred in the 2 m population in June. Chara populations at 0–2 m also exhibited a relatively constant biomass throughout the year. The appearance of Nitella at 7 m in July-October and of Chara at 5 m in September-October was interpreted as an interaction between light, thermal, and carbon stratification. Estimates of macrophytic productivity of perennial (‘evergreen’) species populations whose biomass remains relatively constant throughout the year were made employing several different methods of calculation and turnover factors. All methods resulted in productivity estimates in good agreement with the conservative value of 178 g m?2 year?1 for the entire lake. In comparison to the other components (phyto-planktonic, epiphytic and epipelic algae) of the primary production of Lawrence Lake, the aquatic macrophytes constituted a major portion (anuual mean 82·77 g C m?2 year?1 or 48·3 %) of the total production of the lake. The low diversity but relatively high quantitative importance of macrophytes in marl lakes is attributed to an adverse dissolved inorganic and organic chemical milieu which inhibits phytoplanktonic production and allows only certain adapted macrophytes to develop strongly. The phenomenon of perennial biomass levels throughout the year is believed to be much more common than previously suspected and has iikely resulted from adaptations of submersed macrophytes to ameliorated conditions of water and temperatures relative to the terrestrial situation in winter.  相似文献

Measurements of net photosynthesis (PS, O2 evolution), dark respiration (R, O2 consumption), and light and dark carbon fixation (14C) were conducted on whole blades, isolated blade discs, sporophylls, apical scimitars and representative portions of stipe and holdfast of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera L.C. Ag. On a dry weight basis, highest net PS rates were observed in apical scimitar segments and whole blades (3.81 and 3.07 mgC · g dry wt?1· h?1, respectively), followed by sporophylls (1.42 mgC·g dry wt?1· h?1) and stipe segments (0.15 mgC·g dry wt?1· h?1). No PS capacity was observed in holdfast material. Respiration rates showed similar ranking ranging from 1.22 mgC·g dry wt?1·h?1 for apical scimitar to 0.18–0.22 mgC·g dry wt?1· h?1 for holdfast material. Considerable within blade variability in both PS and R was also found. Steepest PS and R gradients on both an areal and weight basis were found within immature blades followed by senescent and mature blade material. Highest net PS rates were associated with the blade tips ranging from 3.08 (mature blades) to 10.3 mgC·dry wt?1·h?1 (immature blades). Highest rates of R generally occurred towards the basal portions of blades and ranged from 1.03–1.80 mgC·g dry wt?1·h?1 for immature blades. The variability within and between blades was high, with coefficients of variation approaching 50%. The observed patterns can be related to the decreasing proportionment of photosynthetic tissue and increasing proportionment of structural tissue as occurs from the blade tip to the blade base. Rates of light carbon fixation (LCF) revealed longitudinal profiles similar to oxygen measurements for the different blade types, with the absolute rates being slightly lower. Patterns of dark carbon fixation (DCF) were less easily interpreted. Highest rates of DCF (0.04–0.06 mgC·g dry wt?1·h?1) occurred at the basal portions of immature and senescent blades. Longitudinal profiles of total chlorophyll (a + c) on both an areal and weight basis were very similar to the profiles of PS. Normalized to chlorophyll a, PS displayed an unusual longitudinal profile in immature tissue; however, such profiles for mature and senescent tissues were similar to those for PS on an areal basis. It was demonstrated that it is difficult, if not impossible, to select single tissue discs that are representative of whole blades. The metabolic longitudinal profiles reveal a characteristic developmental pattern; the previous working definitions of immature, mature, and senescent blades, based on morphology and frond position thus have a physiological basis.  相似文献

We quantified the effects of initial macroalgal tissue nitrogen (N) status (depleted and enriched) and varying pulses of nitrate (NO3?) concentration on uptake and storage of nitrogen in Ulva intestinalis L. and Ulva expansa (Setch.) Setch. et N. L. Gardner using mesocosms modeling shallow coastal estuaries in Mediterranean climates. Uptake of NO3? (μmol · g dry weight [dwt]?1 · h?1) was measured as loss from the water after 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h and storage as total tissue nitrogen (% dwt) and nitrate (ppm). Both species of algae exhibited a high affinity for NO3? across all N pulses and initial tissue contents. There was greater NO3? removal from the water for depleted than enriched algae across all time intervals. In the low‐N‐pulse treatment, U. intestinalis and U. expansa removed all measurable NO3? within 8 and 12 h, respectively, and in the medium and high treatments, removal was high and then decreased over time. Maximum mean uptake rates of nitrate were greater for U. expansa (~300 μmol · g dwt?1 · h?1) than U. intestinalis (~100 μmol · g dwt?1 · h?1); however, uptake rates were highly variable over time. Overall, U. expansa uptake rates were double those of U. intestinalis. Maximum tissue NO3? for U. expansa was >1,000 ppm, five times that of U. intestinalis, suggesting that U. expansa has a greater storage capacity in this cellular pool. These results showed that opportunistic green algae with differing tissue nutrient histories were able to efficiently remove nitrate from the water across a wide range of N pulses; thus, both are highly adapted to proliferate in estuarine environments with pulsed nutrient supplies.  相似文献

A cell‐wall deficient strain of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii P. A Dang. CC‐849 was cotransformed with two expression vectors, p105B124 and pH105C124, containing phbB and phbC genes, respectively, from Ralstonia eutropha. The transformants were selected on Tris‐acetate‐phosphate media containing 10 μg · mL?1 Zeomycin. Upon further screening, the transgenic algae were subcloned and maintained in culture. PCR analysis demonstrated that both phbB and phbC genes were successfully integrated into the algal nuclear genome. Poly‐3‐hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthase activity in these transgenic algae ranged from 5.4 nmol · min?1 · mg protein?1 to 126 nmol · min?1 · mg protein?1. The amount of PHB in double transgenic algae was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) when comparing with PHB standard. In addition, PHB granules were observed in the cytoplasm of transgenic algal cells using TEM, which indicated that PHB was synthesized in transgenic C. reinhardtii. Hence, results clearly showed that producing PHB in C. reinhardtii was feasible. Further studies would focus on enhancing PHB production in the transgenic algae and targeting the chloroplast for PHB accumulation.  相似文献

The presence of up to 500 μg sulfur·l?1 of an equimolar mixture of cysteine and methionine had virtually no effect on the SO42- uptake rate of Navicula pelliculosa, (Bréb.) Hilse whereas the rate of Ankistrodesmus falcatus (Corda) Ralfs was decreased by the presence of 500 μg S· l?1 and Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyngbye) Bréb. by 50 μg S·l?1. Primary productivity in these axenic cultures was affected (decreased) only in A. falcatus. The C:S uptake ratio was lowest in N. pelliculosa and highest in A. falcatus. Considering these species as representative of groups of naturally occurring algae, patterns of SO42- uptake and primary productivity in a eutrophic and a moderately oligotrophic lake reflected the results of the algal culturing experiments: SO42- uptake rates, relative to primary productivity, were higher in the presence of diatoms and bluegreen algae and lower when green algae were present; the addition of the cysteine I methionine mixture to the lake waters decreased the rate of microplankton SO42- uptake in correlation with the makeup of the algal community; primary productivity decreased upon the addition of cysteine I methionine when green algae were relatively abundant. It is concluded that, in most fresh water systems, the effects of organic sulfur pollution on algal SO42- uptake and primary productivity are insignificant as compared to other ecological changes that occur due to that pollution.  相似文献

The effects of environmental variables, particularly irradiance, on the sinking rates of phytoplankton were investigated using cultures of Chaetoceros gracilis Schütt and C. flexuosum Mangin in laboratory experiments; these data were compared with results from assemblages in the open ocean and marginal ice zone of the Greenland Sea. In culture experiments both the irradiance under which the diatom was grown and culture growth rate were positively correlated with sinking rates. Sinking rates (ψ) in the Greenland Sea were smallest when determined from chlorophyll (mean ψchl= 0.14 m · d?1) and biogenic silica (ψsi= 0.14 m · d?1) and greatest when determined from particulate carbon (ψc= 0.55 m · d?1) and nitrogen (ψN= 0.64 m · d?1). Field measurements indicated that variations in sinking may be associated with changes in irradiance and nitrate concentrations. Because these factors do not directly affect water density, they must be inducing physiological changes in the cell which affect buoyancy. Although a direct response to a single environmental variable was not always evident, sinking rates were positively correlated with growth rates in the marginal ice zone, further indicating a connection to physiological processes. Estimats of carbon flux at stations with vertically mixed euphotic zones indicated that approximately 30% of the daily primary production sank from the euphotic zone in the form of small particulates. Calculated carbon flux tended to increase with primary productivity.  相似文献

Two methane utilizing bacteria strains, GB 21 and WSB 874, were cultivated with methane as sole carbon and energy source in a submerged continuous fermentation process. The aim of the investigations was to reach high biomass concentrations (>25 g BDM ·kg?1 medium) and high productivities (>3 g BDM · kg?1 · h?1). A precondition for the high-performance fermentation process was to ensure a transfer rate of methane and oxygen in quantities required by the microorganisms. For this purposes a high performance stirred pressure fermenter was used. The fermentation process is characterized by the transfer of two gaseous substrates. In order to develop a technical process it was necessary to investigate both the correlations between the two gases and the productivity of the fermentation process and the influence of system pressure on the microorganisms. Within a pressure range of up to 0.7 MPa a biomass concentration of up to 50 g BDM · kg?1 medium and a productivity of up to 9 g BDM · kg?1 · h?1 was reached in a continuously running fermentation process under nonsterile conditions. Under these fermentation conditions the microbial population consisted of a dominating main culture GB 21 or WSB 874, respectively, and an accompanying flora (type II). The microbial population was very stable in its composition during the fermentation process running continuously for weeks and months.  相似文献

Investigations on chlorophyll a and primary productivity were carried out in the Chukchi Sea and its northern Chukchi Plateau during the 2nd Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition in the summer of 2003. The results showed that chlorophyll a concentrations were 0.009–30.390 μg/dm3 at the surveyed waters; the surface chlorophyll a concentrations were 0.050–4.644 μg/dm3 and the average value was (0.875±0.981) μg/dm3 in the surveyed area. In the Chukchi Sea Shelf, chlorophyll a concentrations at the depth from 10 m to bottom were higher than that in the surface water, and the concentrations were lower at the depth below 75 m in the Chukchi Plateau. Chlorophyll a concentrations descended in 3 sequential samplings on Transect R, with average values of (2.564±1.496) μg/dm3, (1.329±0.882) μg/dm3 and (0.965±0.623) μg/dm3, respectively. The potential primary productivity ((2.305± 1.493) mgC/(m3·h)) in the Chukchi Sea was higher than that ((0.527±0.374) mgC/(m3·h)) in the Chukchi Plateau. The results of the size-fractionated chlorophyll a and primary productivity showed that microplankton accounted for the majority of the total chlorophyll a (63.13%) and primary productivity (65.16%) at the survey stations. The contributions of the nanoplankton and picoplankton to the total chlorophyll a and primary productivity were roughly the same.  相似文献

Theoretical Maximum Algal Oil Production   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Interest in algae as a feedstock for biofuel production has risen in recent years, due to projections that algae can produce lipids (oil) at a rate significantly higher than agriculture-based feedstocks. Current research and development of enclosed photobioreactors for commercial-scale algal oil production is directed towards pushing the upper limit of productivity beyond that of open ponds. So far, most of this development is in a prototype stage, so working production metrics for a commercial-scale algal biofuel system are still unknown, and projections are largely based on small-scale experimental data. Given this research climate, a methodical analysis of a maximum algal oil production rate from a theoretical perspective will be useful to the emerging industry for understanding the upper limits that will bound the production capabilities of new designs. This paper presents a theoretical approach to calculating an absolute upper limit to algal production based on physical laws and assumptions of perfect efficiencies. In addition, it presents a best case approach that represents an optimistic target for production based on realistic efficiencies and is calculated for six global sites. The theoretical maximum was found to be 354,000 L·ha?1·year?1 (38,000 gal·ac?1·year?1) of unrefined oil, while the best cases examined in this report range from 40,700–53,200 L·ha?1·year?1 (4,350–5,700 gal·ac?1·year?1) of unrefined oil.  相似文献

The relative importance of respiration and organic carbon release to the efficiency of carbon specific growth of Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Clave was evaluated over a light range from 1500–15 μE · m?2· s?1. Net growth efficiency ranged from 0.45–0.69 with a maximum at 130 μE · m?2· s?1. Respiration was 93% or more of the variations in growth efficiency. Organic carbon release ranged from 0–7% of gross production and increased with light intensity. Carbon specific particulate production was a hyperbolic function of incident light intensity and was related exponentially to particulate carbon production per unit chlorophyll a. Full sunlight conditions, 1500 μE · m?2· s?1, did not induce photoinhibition of gross production. Variations in the efficiency of growth of S. costatum were minimized over a wide range of light intensities mainly because of variations in cellular pigments which permitted the efficient utilization of available light energy, and a reduction in the losses of carbon which increases the growth rate, possibly as a consequence of the recycling of respired carbon within the cell.  相似文献

A dense community of shade adapted microalgae dominated by the diatom Trachyneis aspera is associated with a siliceous sponge spicule mat in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Diatoms at a depth of 20 to 30 m were found attached to spicule surfaces and in the interstitial water between spicules. Ambient irradiance was less than 0.6 μE · m?2· s?1 due to light attenuation by surface snow, sea ice, ice algae, and the water column. Photosynthesis-irradiance relationships determined by the uptake of NaH14CO3 revealed that benthic diatoms beneath annual sea ice were light-saturated at only 11 μE·m?2·s?1, putting them among the most shade adapted microalgae reported. Unlike most shade adapted microalgae, however, they were not photoinhibited even at irradiances of 300 μE·m?2·s?1. Although in situ primary production by benthic diatoms was low, it may provide a source of fixed carbon to the abundant benthic invertebrates when phytoplankton or ice algal carbon is unavailable.  相似文献

Although sea‐ice represents a harsh physicochemical environment with steep gradients in temperature, light, and salinity, diverse microbial communities are present within the ice matrix. We describe here the photosynthetic responses of sea‐ice microalgae to varying irradiances. Rapid light curves (RLCs) were generated using pulse amplitude fluorometry and used to derive photosynthetic yield (ΦPSII), photosynthetic efficiency (α), and the irradiance (Ek) at which relative electron transport rate (rETR) saturates. Surface brine algae from near the surface and bottom‐ice algae were exposed to a range of irradiances from 7 to 262 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1. In surface brine algae, ΦPSII and α remained constant at all irradiances, and rETRmax peaked at 151 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1, indicating these algae are well acclimated to the irradiances to which they are normally exposed. In contrast, ΦPSII, α, and rETRmax in bottom‐ice algae reduced when exposed to irradiances >26 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1, indicating a high degree of shade acclimation. In addition, the previous light history had no significant effect on the photosynthetic capacity of bottom‐ice algae whether cells were gradually exposed to target irradiances over a 12 h period or were exposed immediately (light shocked). These findings indicate that bottom‐ice algae are photoinhibited in a dose‐dependent manner, while surface brine algae tolerate higher irradiances. Our study shows that sea‐ice algae are able to adjust to changes in irradiance rapidly, and this ability to acclimate may facilitate survival and subsequent long‐term acclimation to the postmelt light regime of the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Ulothrix zonata (Weber and Mohr) Kütz. is an unbranched filamentous green alga found in rocky littoral areas of many northern lakes. Field observations of its seasonal and spatial distribution indicated that it should have a low temperature and a high irradiance optimum for net photosynthesis, and at temperatures above 10°C it should show an increasingly unfavorable energy balance. Measurements of net photosynthesis and respiration were made at 56 combinations of light and temperature. Optimum conditions were 5°C and 1100 μE·m?2·s?1 at which net photosynthesis was 16.8 mg O2·g?1·h?1. As temperature increased above 5° C optimum irradiance decreased to 125 μE·m?2·s?1 at 30°C. Respiration rates increased with both temperature and prior irradiance. Light-enhanced respiration rates were significantly greater than dark respiration rates following irradiance exposures of 125 μE·m?2·s?1 or greater. Polynomials were fitted to the data to generate response surfaces. Polynomial equations represent statistical models which can accurately predict photosynthesis and respiration for inclusion in ecosystem models.  相似文献
