A planktonic alga similar in general morphology and pigments to Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves and Sieburth has caused persistent and ecologically damaging blooms along the south Texas coast. Experiments using 100 μM NO3?, NO2?, and NH4+ demonstrated that the alga could not use NO3? for growth but could use NO2? and NH4+. Doubling iron or trace metal concentrations did not permit growth on NO3?. Chemical composition data for cultures grown in excess NO3? or NH4+, respectively, were as follows: N·cell?1 (0.88 vs. 1.3 pg), C:N ratio (25:1 vs. 6.4:1), C:chlorophyll a (chl a) (560:1 vs. 44:1), and chl a·cell?1 (0.033 vs. 0.16 pg). These data imply that cells supplied with NO3? were N-starved. Culture addition of 10 mM final concentration chlorate (a nitrate analog) did not affect the Texas isolate while NO3? utilizing A. anophagefferens was lysed, suggesting that the NO3? reductase of the Texas isolate is nonfunctional. Rates of primary productivity determined during a dense bloom indicated that light-saturated growth rates were ca. 0.45 d?1, which is similar to maximum rates determined in laboratory experiments (0.58 d?1± 0.16). However, chemical composition data were consistent with the growth rate of these cells being limited by N availability (C:N 28, C:chl a 176, chl a·cell?1 0.019). Calculations based on a mass balance for nitrogen suggest that the bloom was triggered by an input of ca. 69 μM NH4+ that resulted from an extensive die-off of benthos and fish.  相似文献

Physiological rate measurements were made with Oscillatoria thiebautii (Gom.) Geitler in the subtropical north Atlantic Ocean between Spain and Bermuda during May and June of 1975. The near surface C:N fixation ratios averaged 6.5, and the cellular composition ratio was 6.2, suggesting that N2 fixation is the major path of nitrogenous nutrition for this alga. Compared to other oceanic phytoplankters, it has a low affinity for orthophosphate at oceanic concentrations (ks= 9.0); however, it has a high potential for utilizing phosphomonoesters (170–300 ng atoms P ·μg chl a?1· h?1). Maximal photosynthesis occurred at 450–700 μ Einstein · m?2· s?1, and was inhibited by full sunlight. Calculated cell division rates (ca. 180 days) suggest that relative to other phytoplankters in this oceanic region, O. thiebautii must be subjected to negligible grazing pressure. No major differences in C, N, chl a or ATP were observed between the tuft (fusiform) and puff (spherical) colonies. ATP concentrations relative to other cellular constituents varied greatly between colonies, suggesting a general inter-colony physiological variability in the open Atlantic. With increasing depth in the euphotic zone, there was no evidence for chromatic adaption. The observations that O. thiebautii represents only a small fraction of total phytoplankton biomass and that its growth rate is 10–100 times slower than that of the other indigenous phytoplankton, strongly suggest that N2 fixation by this alga is a virtually insignificant component of the nitrogenous nutrition for the phytoplankton of the North Atlantic central gyre in late Spring.  相似文献

The particulate-phase concentrations of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSOp) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSPp) in sea-ice algal communities from the North Water, northern Baffin Bay, were examined from April to June 1998. The concentrations of these compounds were measured in the bottom 2 cm of the ice at 36 locations throughout this region and are compared with results from water-column samples collected for a complementary study. In general, levels of DMSPp (8.66–987 nmol·L 1, average 126 nmol·L 1) in sea-ice algal communities were slightly less than those found in bottom sea-ice algal communities from other polar locations but greater than those found in phytoplankton in other polar environments or at more temperate latitudes. Furthermore, DMSPp :chl a ratios (0.02–14.8 nmol·μg 1, average 1.91 nmol·μg 1) in the sea-ice algal community were slightly less than those found in other polar environments. DMSOp was measured for the first time in sea-ice algal communities. DMSOp concentrations varied from 1.35 to 102 nmol·L 1 (average 13.7 nmol·L 1). DMSOp:chl a ratios varied from 0.01 to 4.5 nmol·μg 1 (average 0.22 nmol·μg 1) and were significantly lower than the DMSPp:chl a ratios observed in this study. It has been hypothesized that DMSO can act as a cryoprotector in phytoplankton cells. However, the low concentrations of DMSO observed in the ice algae during this study indicate that intracellular concentrations of DMSO are unlikely to have a significant influence on the freezing point depression of intracellular fluids.  相似文献

The effects of growth temperature on the marine chlorophyte Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher were studied to provide a more mechanistic understanding of the role of environmental factors in regulating bio-optical properties of phytoplankton. Specific attention was focused on quantities that are relevant for modeling of growth and photosynthesis. Characteristics including chlorophyll a (chl z)-specific light absorption (a*ph(λ)), C:chl a ratio, and quantum yield for growth (φμ) varied as functions of temperature under conditions of excess light and nutrients. As temperature increased over the range examined (12°-28°C), intracellular concentrations of chl a increased by a factor of 2 and a*ph(λ) values decreased by more than 50% at blue to green wavelengths. The lower values of a*ph(λ) were due to both a decrease in the abundance of accessory pigments relative to chl a and an increase in pigment package effects arising from higher intracellular pigment concentrations. Intracellular pigment concentration increased as a consequence of higher cellular pigment quotas combined with lower cell volume. At high growth temperatures, slightly more light was absorbed on a per-cell-C basis, but the dramatic increases in growth rate from μ= 0.5 d?1 at 12° C to μ= 2.2 d?1 at 28°C were primarily due to an increase in φμ (0.015–0.041 mol C (mol quanta)?1). By comparison with previous work on this species, we conclude the effects of temperature on a*ph(λ) and φμ are comparable to those observed for light and nutrient limitation. Patterns of variability in a*ph(λ)and φμ as a function of growth rate at different temperatures are similar to those previously documented for this species grown at the same irradiance but under a range of nitrogen-limited conditions. These results are discussed in the context of implications for bio-optical modeling of aquatic primary production by phytoplankton.  相似文献

1. In previous work, phytoplankton regulation in freshwater lakes has been associated with many factors. Among these, the ratio of total nitrogen to total phosphorus (TN : TP) has been widely proposed as an index to identify whether phytoplankton are N‐ or P‐limited. From another point of view, it has been suggested that planktivorous fish can be used to control phytoplankton. 2. Large‐scale investigations of phytoplankton biomass [measured as chlorophyll a, (chl‐a)] were carried out in 45 mid‐lower Yangtze shallow lakes to test hypotheses concerning nutrient limitation (assessed with TN : TP ratios) and phytoplankton control by planktivorous fish. 3. Regression analyses indicated that TP was the primary regulating factor and TN the second regulating factor for both annual and summer phytoplankton chl‐a. In separate nutrient–chl‐a regression analyses for lakes of different TN : TP ratios, TP was also superior to TN in predicting chl‐a at all particular TN : TP ranges and over the entire TN : TP spectrum. Further analyses found that chl‐a : TP was not influenced by TN : TP, while chl‐a : TN was positively and highly correlated to TP : TN. 4. Based on these results, and others in the literature, we argue that the TN : TP ratio is inappropriate as an index to identify limiting nutrients. It is almost impossible to specify a ‘cut‐off’ TN : TP ratio to identify a limiting nutrient for a multi‐species community because optimal N : P ratios vary greatly among phytoplankton species. 5. Lakes with yields of planktivorous fish (silver and bighead carp, the species native to China) >100 kg ha?1 had significantly higher chl‐a and lower Secchi depth than those with yields <100 kg ha?1. TP–chl‐a and TP–Secchi depth relationships are not significantly different between lakes with yields >100 kg ha?1 or <100 kg ha?1. These results indicate that the fish failed to decrease chl‐a yield or enhance ZSD. Therefore, silver carp and bighead carp are not recommended as a biotic agent for phytoplankton control in lake management if the goal is to control the entire phytoplankton and to enhance water quality.  相似文献

The phytoplankton community structure of a hypertrophic lake was quantitatively determined with the aid of flow cytometry. The flow cytometry signals were calibrated to obtain cell‐specific information, such as the chl a content and the biovolume per cell. The reliability of this method was tested with laboratory cultures. The results of the phytoplankton structure in a hypertrophic lake with respect to chl distribution in the different algal groups obtained by flow cytometry were compared with the results from HPLC pigment fingerprinting. Both methods yield the percentage contribution of the different algal groups to total chl a. The chl a specific absorption coefficient of the phytoplankton (a*Phy) was determined via visible (VIS) spectroscopy of samples taken from a hypertrophic lake (Auensee) in 2003. The results indicated that a*Phy of the total cell suspension is dependent on the phytoplankton structure as well as on environmental factors. The linear relationship between a*Phy at 675 nm and the product of the chl a content per cell and the biovolume offered the possibility to normalize phytoplankton absorption spectra to acquire the taxon‐specific a*Phy. The estimated a*Phy (675 nm) values were used to normalize single cell absorption spectra at this wavelength to obtain the a*Phy between 400 and 750 nm for representatives of the major algal groups. Our measurements show that the absorption coefficient for the whole phytoplankton community varies within the season. Finally, we used the a*Phy and the chl a distribution to calculate the light absorption of each algal group in the hypertrophic lake.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to test whether NH4 + and NO3 affect the growth, P demand, cell composition and N2 fixation of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii under P limitation. Experiments were carried out in P-limited (200 μg l−1 PO4-P) chemostat cultures of C. raciborskii using an inflowing medium containing either 4,000 μg l−1 NH4-N, 4,000 μg l−1 NO3-N or no combined N. The results showed the cellular N:P and C:P ratios of C. raciborskii decreased towards the Redfield ratio with increasing dilution rate (D) due to the alleviation of P limitation. The cellular C:N and carotenoids:chlorophyll-a ratios also decreased with D, predominantly as a result of an increase in the chlorophyll-a and N content. The NH4 + and NO3 supply reduced the P maintenance cell quota of C. raciborskii. Consequently, the biomass yield of the N2-grown culture was significantly lower. The maximum specific growth rate of N2-grown culture was also the lowest observed. It is suggested that these differences in growth parameters were caused by the P and energy requirement for heterocyte formation, nitrogenase synthesis and N2 fixation. N2 fixation was partially inhibited by NO3 and completely inhibited by NH4 +. It was probably repressed through the high N content of cells at high dissolved N concentrations. These results indicate that C. raciborskii is able to grow faster and maintain a higher biomass under P limitation where a sufficient supply of NH4 + or NO3 is maintained. Information gained about the species-specific nutrient and pigment stoichiometry of C. raciborskii could help to access the degree of nutrient limitation in water bodies. Phytoplankton pigment distributions during the spring isothermal periods of 1998 and 1999 and their association with episodic sediment resuspension were characterized in coastal waters of southern Lake Michigan. Total and phylogenetic group chl a concentrations (derived using chemical taxonomy matrix factorization of diagnostic carotenoids) corresponded with assemblage and group biovolumes estimated from microscopic enumeration (P≤ 0.001). Diatoms and cryptophytes dominated assemblages and together typically comprised greater than 85% of relative chl a. Total chl a concentrations and both fucoxanthin·chl a ? 1 and alloxanthin·chl a ? 1 ratios were similar across depths (P> 0.05), indicating uniform distributions of and photophysiological states for assemblages and diatoms and cryptophytes, respectively, throughout the mixed water column. Total chl a concentrations were not always spatially uniform from near‐shore to offshore waters, with the greatest variability reflecting the influence of tributary inflows upon coastal assemblages. Sediment resuspension strongly influenced water column particle density and light climate; however, total and group chl a concentrations did not correspond with coefficients of Kd and suspended particulate matter concentrations (P> 0.05). The correspondence of both light attenuation and suspended particulate matter concentration with relative diatom chl a (P≤ 0.001) indicated an apparent association between sediment resuspension and diatoms. This, and the negative association (P≤ 0.0001) between relative diatom and cryptophyte chl a, corresponded with the spatial dominance of diatom and cryptophyte chl a in near‐shore and offshore waters, respectively. The presence of viable chl a and fucoxanthin within the surficial sediment layer, established this layer as a potential source of meroplanktonic diatoms for near‐shore assemblages.  相似文献

The effect of phosphate (PO4 +3) and pH in regulating nitrate (NO3) and ammonia (NH3 +) uptake by phytoplankton was investigated in two Oklahoma lakes using 15N tracers. Addition of PO4 +3 above ambient concentrations had a negligible effect on the rate of uptake of NO3 or NH3 +. Manipulation of pH of lake water had little effect on uptake of either NO3 or NH3 +. A correlation analysis suggested that NO3 is not used by phytoplankton when NH3 + concentrations exceed about 210 µg NH3 +-N(1)–1.  相似文献

The turnover of chlorophyll a (chl a) was investigated in the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell and Hasle using a new method based on the incorporation of 14C into chl a. The alga was maintained in its exponential growth phase under continuous light; 14C was supplied as bicarbonate. The time course of label accumulation into the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain was determined for time periods equivalent to 1–2 cell doublings. The labeling kinetics of the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain were described satisfactorily by a simple precursor-pigment model with two free parameters, the precursor turnover rate and the pigment turnover rate, both having dimensions of time?1. The model was fit to the experimental data to determine the values of these two free parameters. The turnover rates of the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain were not significantly different, ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 per day. These rates are equivalent to turnover times ranging from days to weeks. Growth rate-normalized turnover rates did not vary with irradiance (7.5–825 μE · m?2· s?1). The precursor turnover rates of the tetrapyrrole ring and the phytol side chain differed by an order of magnitude. These results indicate that chl a is not degraded significantly in cultures of T. weissflogii grown under continuous light. Neither irradiance nor growth rate affected growth rate-normalized chlorophyll turnover rates. Our results are inconsistent with the hypothesis that steady-state cellular concentrations of chl a are maintained by a dynamic equilibrium between rates of synthesis and degradation.  相似文献

The dependence of substrate saturated uptake of 15NH4+, 15NO3?, 32PO43?, and 14CO2 on photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD or photsynthetically active radiation, 400–700 nm) was characterized seasonally in oligotrophic Flathead Lake, Montana. PO43? uptake was not dependent upon PPFD at any time of the year, whereas NH4+, NO3?, and CO2 uptake were consistently dependent on PPFD over all seasons. Maximal rates of NH4+, NO3? and CO2 uptake usually occurred near 40% of surface PPFD, which corresponded to about 5 m in the lake; inhibition was evident at PPFD levels greater than 40%. NH4+, NO3? and PO43? were incorporated in the dark at measurable rates most of the year, whereas dark CO2 uptake was always near 0 relative to light uptake. CO2 and NO3? uptake were more strongly influenced by PPFD than was NH43? uptake. The PPFD dependence of PO43?, NH4+, NO3? and CO2 uptake may affect algal growth and nutrient status by influencing the balance in diel and seasonal C:N:P uptake ratios.  相似文献

The chl a specific absorption coefficients [a* (λ), m2·mg chl a ? 1] were examined in chemostat culture of the Prymnesiophyceae Isochrysis galbana (Parke) under a 12:12‐h light:dark cycle at low light (75 μmol photons·m ? 2·s ? 1) and high light (500 μmol photons· m ? 2·s ? 1) conditions. Other associated measurements such as pigment composition, cell density, and diameter as the measure of cell size were also made at the two light regimes every 2 h for 2 days to confirm the periodicity. A distinct diel variability was observed for the a* (λ) with maxima near dawn and minima near dusk. The magnitude of diel variation in a* (440) was 15% at low light and 22% at high light. Pronounced diel patterns were observed for cell size with minima near dawn and maxima near dusk. The magnitude of diel variation in cell size was 9.3% at low light and 21% at high light. The absorption efficiency factors [Q a (440)] were determined by reconstruction using intracellular concentrations of pigments and cell size. The Q a (440) also showed a distinct diel variability, with minima near dawn and maxima near dusk. The diel variation in a* (λ) and Q a (λ) was primarily caused by changes in cell size due to growth, although there was some influence from diel variations in the intracellular pigment concentrations. The results presented here indicated that diel variation in a* (λ) was an important component of the optical characterization of phytoplankton.  相似文献

Analysis of ten- and four-year datasets for the large, shallow, subtropical, and eutrophic Lakes Okeechobee (USA) and Taihu (China), respectively, suggest that resource-ratio explanations for cyanobacteria dominance may not apply to these two lakes. Datasets were examined to identify relationships between nutrient ratios [total nitrogen (TN):total phosphorus (TP) and ammonium (NH4 +):oxidized N (NO x )] and phytoplankton community structure (as proportions of cyanobacteria and diatoms to total phytoplankton biomass). Datasets were pooled by sampling month, averaged lake-wide, and analyzed with linear regression. In Okeechobee, the cyanobacteria proportion increased and the diatom proportion decreased with increasing TN:TP. In Taihu, cyanobacteria decreased with increasing TN:TP, but the opposite trend observed for diatoms was marginally significant. Okeechobee cyanobacteria increased and diatoms decreased with increasing NH4 +:NO x , but no significant relationships between phytoplankton and NH4 +:NO x were observed in Taihu. Both lakes had significant relationships between phytoplankton community structure and total nutrients, but these relationships were the opposite of those expected. Relationships between phytoplankton community structure and water quality parameters from the previous month resulted in improved relationships, suggesting a predictive capability. Statistical analysis of the entire datasets (not pooled) supported these and additional relationships with other parameters, including temperature and water clarity.  相似文献

Phytoplankton growth rate in response to irradiance can be approximated by a hyperbola defined by three coefficients: i) initial slope (α); ii) asymptote (μm); and, iii) X-axis intercept or compensation irradiance (Ic). To mathematically represent the interaction of temperature and irradiance on growth rate, one must describe the relationship between these constants and temperature. The marine diatom, Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve, was grown in unialgal culture at different levels of irradiance and 2-3 photoperiods at 0, 5, 10, 16 and 22 C. The value of Ic is ca. 1.0 ly·day?1 or less at all temperatures. The initial slope (div·ly?1) is a “u-shaped” function of temperature described by the second degree polynomial, α= 0.25–0.02T+0.001T2. Within the range 0–10 C, μm (div·day?1) is an exponential function of temperature described by the equation, μm= 0.48 exp (0.126T). At each temperature and selected levels of irradiance, cell size and cellular content of C, N and chl a were determined. The C:chl a and N:chl a ratios increased with irradiance because of increases in C and decreases in chl a. At lower temperatures (0, 5, 10 C), the rate of increase of both ratios with irradiance was greater than at the higher temperatures (16, 22 C). Cellular content of N was independent of irradiance and temperature, and the C:N ratio ranged from 5 to 8 with a slight tendency to lower values at low irradiance. Cell volume was not influenced by either temperature or irradiance.  相似文献

The effects of nutrient enrichment on the release of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen (DOC and DON, respectively) from the coral Montipora digitata were investigated in the laboratory. Nitrate (NO3 ) and phosphate (PO4 3−) were supplied to the aquarium to get the final concentrations of 10 and 0.5 μmol l−1, respectively, and the corals were incubated for 8 days. The release rate of DON per unit coral surface area significantly decreased after the nutrient enrichment, while the release rate of DOC was constant. Because the chlorophyll a (chl a) content of zooxanthellae per unit surface area increased, the release rate of DOC significantly decreased when normalized to unit chl a. These results suggested that the incorporation of NO3 and PO4 3− stimulated the synthesis of new cellular components in the coral colonies and consequently, reduced extracellular release of DOC and DON. Actually, significant increase in N and P contents relative to C content was observed in the coral’s tissue after the nutrient enrichment. The present study has concluded that inorganic nutrient enrichment not only affects coral-algal metabolism inside the colony but also affects a microbial community around the coral because the organic matter released from corals functions as energy carrier in the coral reef ecosystem.  相似文献

The photosynthesis‐irradiance response (PE) curve, in which mass‐specific photosynthetic rates are plotted versus irradiance, is commonly used to characterize photoacclimation. The interpretation of PE curves depends critically on the currency in which mass is expressed. Normalizing the light‐limited rate to chl a yields the chl a‐specific initial slope (αchl). This is proportional to the light absorption coefficient (achl), the proportionality factor being the photon efficiency of photosynthesis (φm). Thus, αchl is the product of achl and φm. In microalgae αchl typically shows little (<20%) phenotypic variability because declines of φm under conditions of high‐light stress are accompanied by increases of achl. The variation of αchl among species is dominated by changes in achl due to differences in pigment complement and pigment packaging. In contrast to the microalgae, αchl declines as irradiance increases in the cyanobacteria where phycobiliproteins dominate light absorption because of plasticity in the phycobiliprotein:chl a ratio. By definition, light‐saturated photosynthesis (Pm) is limited by a factor other than the rate of light absorption. Normalizing Pm to organic carbon concentration to obtain PmC allows a direct comparison with growth rates. Within species, PmC is independent of growth irradiance. Among species, PmC covaries with the resource‐saturated growth rate. The chl a:C ratio is a key physiological variable because the appropriate currencies for normalizing light‐limited and light‐saturated photosynthetic rates are, respectively, chl a and carbon. Typically, chl a:C is reduced to about 40% of its maximum value at an irradiance that supports 50% of the species‐specific maximum growth rate and light‐harvesting accessory pigments show similar or greater declines. In the steady state, this down‐regulation of pigment content prevents microalgae and cyanobacteria from maximizing photosynthetic rates throughout the light‐limited region for growth. The reason for down‐regulation of light harvesting, and therefore loss of potential photosynthetic gain at moderately limiting irradiances, is unknown. However, it is clear that maximizing the rate of photosynthetic carbon assimilation is not the only criterion governing photoacclimation.  相似文献

The water-soluble compounds synthesized by the weed, Pluchea lanceolata, and released by it into the soil significantly reduced seed germination, number of nodes, internode length, shoot and root lengths, nodule number and weight, and Chl a and b and Chl a/b ratio of asparagus bean plants. The pattern of accumulation of nutrients in shoot and root of asparagus bean was also affected. In contrast, the net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of fully expanded leaves were higher in plants grown with treated soil. The concentrations of Mg++, Zn++, and PO43- were higher and K+ was lower in shoots of plants grown with treated soil as compared to those grown with the control soil. Also, roots of plants grown with treated soil showed greater accumulation of Mg++ and NO3-. Shoot/root ratio of nutrients in plants grown with control soil were higher for Zn++, Na+, Ca++, and NO3-, whereas plants grown with treated soil had higher ratios for PO43-. These results provide evidence for allelopathic interference by P. lanceolata to the growth of asparagus bean.  相似文献

Investigations on phytoplankton communities in a nearshore region off the Cape Peninsula revealed three types of upwelled water. During active upwelling temperatures were < 10 °C and concentrations of inorganic nutrients were high (Type 1). Maturing upwelled water was characterized by temperatures > 10°C and nitrate concentrations varying between 2 and 15 μg-at. NO3-N · 1?1 (Type 2), while aged upwelled water (Type 3) contained low concentrations of nitrate (<2 μg-at. NO3-N · 1?1) at temperatures > 10°C. During the summer of 1978–1979 diatoms dominated the communities from October to January but microflagellates were dominant in February and March. In both types of community, low concentrations of ATP, chlorophyll a, protein and carbohydrate were measured in Type 1 water with protein/carbohydrate ratios being > 1. In Type 2 water concentrations of chlorophyll a, ATP and protein were high and the protein/carbohydrate ratio was > 1. Concentrations of chlorophyll a and ATP remained high in Type 3 water but the protein/carbohydrate ratio decreased to < 1 due to an increase in the concentration of acid-soluble glucan. It was concluded that the communities were in an active phase of growth in Type 1 and Type 2 water when adequate nutrients were available, but were in a slow-growing phase in Type 3 water when nitrate concentrations were low. Correlation coefficients, simple linear regressions and stepwise multiple regressions between biochemical and environmental variables confirmed that nitrate was the nutrient most closely related to the biochemical composition of phytoplankton. Using linear regression equations of biochemical variables on glucan it was estimated that chlorophyll a existed in a ratio of ≈ 1: 1 between living phytoplankton and bacteria/detritus, while the percentage of ATP was high in the phytoplankton component of Type 1 water but low in that of Type 2 water. The percentage of protein in detritus was greater than in living phytoplankton, and the carbohydrate content of living phytoplankton increased as the upwelled water matured from Type 1 and Type 2 to Type 3.  相似文献

Specific growth rate of Cryptomonas ovata var. palustris Pringsheim was measured in batch culture at 14 light-temperature combinations. Both the maximum growth rate (μm) and optimum light intensity (Iopt) fit an empirical function that increases exponentially with temperature up to an optimum (Topt), then declines rapidly as temperature exceeds Topt. Incorporation of these functions into Steele's growth equation gives a good estimate of specific growth rate over a wide range of temperature and light intensity. Rates of phosphate, ammonium and nitrate uptake were measured separately at 16 combinations of irradiance and temperature and following a spike addition of all starved cells initially took up nutrient at a rapid rate. This transitory surge was followed by a period of steady, substrate-saturated uptake that persisted until external nutrient concentration fell. Substrate-saturated NO3?-uptake proceeded at very slow rates in the dark and was stimulated by both increased temperature and irradiance; NH4+-uptake apparently proceeded at a basal rate at 8 and l4 C and was also stimulated by increased temperature and irradiance. Rates of NH4?-uptake were much higher than NO3?-uptake at all light-temperature combinations. Below 20 C, PO4?3-uptake was more rapid in dark than in light, but was light enhanced at 26 C.  相似文献
