During the past decade, the relative abundance of the brown macroalgae Dictyota spp. has been high in the Florida Keys. Recent studies have shown that members of this genus successfully reproduce via vegetative fragmentation. To investigate the importance of fragmentation on the reef community, this study examined: (1) the degree of epiphytism on benthic organisms, (2) the rate of fragment production through fish foraging activities, (3) the likelihood of fragment entanglement, and (4) the fragment attachment and success rate. It was found that reef fish contributed substantially to the fragment pool; furthermore, most fish-produced fragments produced rhizoids and attached to sand grains within 24 h in the field. Fragments of Dictyota spp. most commonly became entangled around and then attached themselves to the green alga Halimeda tuna, and other Dictyota spp. These results suggest that vegetative fragmentation of Dictyota spp. plays an important role in the changing community structure on the Florida Keys reef tract.  相似文献

The generally slow and incomplete recovery of the long-spined sea urchin, Diadema antillarum, from the 1983–84 Caribbean-wide die-off, particularly in the Florida Keys, USA, raises the question of factors limiting population recovery. This study sought to quantify larval settlement rates as an indicator of larval supply at two sites in the Florida Keys, utilizing methods comparable to an historic study. Settlement at two sites in southwest Puerto Rico was also examined as a comparison of present-day settlement rates at a site where D. antillarum recovery has been moderate. Monthly settlement rates were low (max < 2 m−2) and did not differ between the two sites examined in the Florida Keys. Settlement was significantly higher at only one of the Puerto Rico sites (max 16 m−2), but still an order of magnitude lower than that reported for historic populations in Cura?ao (1982–83). Results are consistent with the hypothesis of low larval supply limiting D. antillarum recovery in the Florida Keys.  相似文献

Identifying which factors lead to coral bleaching resistance is a priority given the global decline of coral reefs with ocean warming. During the second year of back‐to‐back bleaching events in the Florida Keys in 2014 and 2015, we characterized key environmental and biological factors associated with bleaching resilience in the threatened reef‐building coral Orbicella faveolata. Ten reefs (five inshore, five offshore, 179 corals total) were sampled during bleaching (September 2015) and recovery (May 2016). Corals were genotyped with 2bRAD and profiled for algal symbiont abundance and type. O. faveolata at the inshore sites, despite higher temperatures, demonstrated significantly higher bleaching resistance and better recovery compared to offshore. The thermotolerant Durusdinium trenchii (formerly Symbiondinium trenchii) was the dominant endosymbiont type region‐wide during initial (78.0% of corals sampled) and final (77.2%) sampling; >90% of the nonbleached corals were dominated by D. trenchii. 2bRAD host genotyping found no genetic structure among reefs, but inshore sites showed a high level of clonality. While none of the measured environmental parameters were correlated with bleaching, 71% of variation in bleaching resistance and 73% of variation in the proportion of D. trenchii was attributable to differences between genets, highlighting the leading role of genetics in shaping natural bleaching patterns. Notably, D. trenchii was rarely dominant in O. faveolata from the Florida Keys in previous studies, even during bleaching. The region‐wide high abundance of D. trenchii was likely driven by repeated bleaching associated with the two warmest years on record for the Florida Keys (2014 and 2015). On inshore reefs in the Upper Florida Keys, O. faveolata was most abundant, had the highest bleaching resistance, and contained the most corals dominated by D. trenchii, illustrating a causal link between heat tolerance and ecosystem resilience with global change.  相似文献

The type species of Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth (1797, Cat. Bot I: 148, pl. VIII, fig. 1). This has been treated as a probable synonym of Ceramium nodulosum (Lightfoot) Ducluzeau, one of the species formerly confused under the illegitimate name Ceramium rubrum (Hudson) C. Agardh. However, in 1996 Silva showed that C. nodulosum (Lightfoot) Ducluzeau is a later homonym of C. nodulosum de Candolle 1805, and advocated conserving C. rubrum with a neotype. As an alternative to this, we investigated whether the name C. virgatum might be available for this species. The lectotype of C. virgatum is Roth's illustration of a much-branched, fully corticate, Ceramium specimen from Eckwarden, North Sea, which could represent any member of the ' C. rubrum' group. We obtained material resembling Roth's, from the North Sea island of Helgoland, as a potential epitype. Its rbc L sequence was aligned with sequences of all C. rubrum -like species in the British Isles, i.e. C. secundatum , C. botryocarpum , C. pallidum and ' C. nodulosum '. The Helgoland material was clearly conspecific with ' C. nodulosum ' from Ireland (0.08% divergence). We therefore suggest that the name C. virgatum Roth should be employed for this species. Phylogenetic analyses of these sequences aligned with various representatives of the tribe Ceramieae, placed the North Atlantic C. rubrum -like species in two well-supported clades. In one of these, C. virgatum is basal to C. secundatum and C. botryocarpum. The other clade consists of C. pallidum and a partly ecorticate species resembling C. diaphanum.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distributions of the epiphytic diatom flora on Thalassia testudinum was described within the Florida Bay estuary and at one Atlantic site east of the Florida Keys over a 1-year period. Species of the genus Mastogloia dominated the epiphytic diatom flora (82 out of 332 total species). Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) and Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) revealed four distinct spatial assemblages and two temporal assemblages. Eastern and western Florida Bay assemblages were identified within the estuary. The eastern diatom assemblage was characterized by high relative abundances of Brachysira aponina and Nitzschia liebetruthii, while the western assemblage was characterized by the abundance of Reimerothrix floridensis, particularly during summer. Two diverse and distinct marine assemblages, one located in the Gulf of Mexico along the western edge of Florida Bay and the other behind the Florida reef tract in the Atlantic Ocean, were also identified. Analysis of the spatial distribution of diatoms and water quality characteristics within Florida Bay suggest that these assemblages may be structured by salinity and nutrient availability, particularly P. The Gulf of Mexico and the western Florida Bay assemblages were associated with higher water column salinities and TP concentrations and lower DIN concentrations and TN:TP ratios relative to the eastern Florida Bay assemblage. The temporal variation in diatom assemblages was associated with water temperature, though temporal indicator species were few relative to the number of spatial indicators. Morphological investigations identified 11 Ceramium Roth species, of the 18 previously reported from Brazil. Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of the chloroplast‐encoded rbcL gene confirmed the presence of seven of these species. Three other species are reported from Brazil for the first time. Ceramium affine Setchell & Gardner and C. filicula Harvey ex Womersley were previously known only from the Pacific Ocean (Mexico and Australia, respectively). A new species, C. fujianum Barros‐Barreto et Maggs sp. nov., is described here. Its general habit is similar to that of C. strictum sensu Harvey from Europe but it has one less periaxial cell than C. strictum; its cortical filament arrangement is closest to C. deslongchampsii Chauvin ex Duby, also from Europe, but whorled tetrasporangia partially covered by cortical cells differ strikingly from the naked protruding tetrasporangia of C. deslongchampsii. Ceramium species in which each periaxial cell cuts off transversely only a single basipetal cell formed a robust clade. The genus Ceramium as represented in Brazil is not monophyletic with respect to Centroceras Kützing and Corallophila Weber‐van Bosse; Ceramium nitens, which has axial cells completely covered by rounded cortical cells formed by acropetal and basipetal filaments, did not group with any Ceramium clade but was weakly allied to a species of Corallophila. All three Brazilian Centroceras sequences were attributed to a single species, C. clavulatum.  相似文献

Branch cultures ofEucheuma alvarezii Doty var.tambalang Doty, farmed in the Philippines, andE. isiforme (C. Agardh) J. Agardh var.denudatum Cheney, from the west coast of Florida, were gradually transferred through three temperature regimes over a 6-week period. Photosynthetic responses were measured under a series of irradiances (P-I curves) and temperatures to determine immediate responses of the plants before, during and after completion of the transfers. The Philippine variety did not show acclimation to 18 °C either after gradual transfer from the initial culture temperature of 25 °C or when abruptly transferred from 25 to 18 °C. The Florida variety did show acclimation to 25 °C when gradually transferred from 18 to 22 to 25 °C over the 6-week period, but not if abruptly transferred from 18 to 25 °C. The west coast variety ofE. isiforme from Florida shows a temperature acclimation ability that parallels the seasonal changes in water temperature of its habitat.  相似文献

Spongivory on Caribbean reefs releases corals from competition with sponges   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Malcolm S. Hill 《Oecologia》1998,117(1-2):143-150
Competition for space is an important process on tropical coral reefs. Few studies have examined the role sponges play in community structure despite the fact that many sponges are competitively superior to reef-building corals in space acquisition. Surveys conducted throughout the Florida Keys indicated that Chondrilla nucula was involved in about 30% of all coral-sponge interactions; this sponge has also been observed in 40–50% of coral-sponge interactions on other Caribbean reefs. C. nucula is also the top prey item of the Hawksbill turtle, and among the preferred prey of several spongivorous fish. I examined how predation influenced sponge competitive abilities (particularly those of C. nucula), and whether this type of indirect effect had important consequences for community dynamics in the Florida Keys. Exclusion of sponge predators (primarily angelfish) resulted in increased sponge overgrowth, with a subsequent greater loss of coral cover, compared to uncaged pairwise interactions. When caged, the corals Dichocoenia stokesii and Siderastrea sideraea lost significantly greater surface area and number of polyps to the sponge C. nucula compared to uncaged interactions. For caged interactions involving the sponge Ectyoplasia ferox, there was a trend for greater loss of  S. sideraea surface area and polyps compared to uncaged interactions. Predation had a greater affect on C. nucula than on any of the other sponges examined. Predator exclusion experiments performed with naturally occurring coral-sponge interactions demonstrated a significant decrease in total coral cover compared to uncaged controls. It is proposed that indirect effects arising from spongivory (especially consumption of  C. nucula) may have large community consequences. Species diversity on Caribbean reefs may be maintained, at least in part, by spongivores. Received: 28 January 1998 / Accepted: 22 June 1998  相似文献

Ceramium inkyuii sp. nov. is newly described based on samples collected from the east coast of Korea and compared with similar species such as C. paniculatum and C. tenerrimum. The new species is characterized by pseudo‐dichotomously branched thalli with a twist in the upper part, a single row of spines on the abaxial side, strongly inrolled apices, and the presence of gland cells. In contrast, C. paniculatum has alternate branches and lacks gland cells, and C. tenerrimum is spineless and also lacks gland cells. Ceramium inkyuii was observed to be an annual species producing tetrasporangia in the spring to summer and cystocarps in the fall. Plastid‐encoded rbcL and nuclear small subunit (SSU) rDNA sequences were determined in four samples of C. inkyuii from different locations and six samples of four putative relatives. All four C. inkyuii replicates from three different locations had identical sequences of each gene, and the interspecific sequence divergences were enough to warrant its natural entity. The phylogenies of the rbcL and SSU rDNA sequences also indicate the monophyly of C. inkyuii. The spinous C. inkyuii was more closely related to the spineless C. tenerrimum than to the spinous C. paniculatum.  相似文献

The δ15N and δ13C values of particulate organic material (POM) were analyzed from 35 sites in the Florida Keys over the time interval 2000 to 2002. The sites within the study area were delineated into nine transects stretching from Key West to Key Largo. Each transect consisted of three to five sites extending from close to the Keys to the edge of the reef tract. The POM had mean δ15N and δ13C values of +3.6‰ (σ = ±3.2‰) and −19.9‰ (σ = ±0.6‰) respectively. Over the study period there were no statistically significant changes in δ15N, δ13C, or C:N. For the majority of the sampling dates, the δ13C values showed a distinct inshore (δ13C = −18.3‰, σ = ±1.0‰) to offshore gradient (δ13C = −21.4, σ = ±0.9‰). In contrast, the δ15N values showed no consistent patterns related to the distance from land. The more positive δ13C values of the nearshore samples suggest that the source of the carbon and the nitrogen in the POM in the nearshore was mainly derived from the degradation of seagrass detritus and not from the input of anthropogenically derived material from the Florida Keys. In contrast, the POM on the outer reef was dominated by marine plankton. As mineralization and nitrification of the organic nitrogen pool are major contributors to the dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the water column, it is unlikely that variations in the δ15N of the algae and other benthic organisms reported in the Florida Keys are related to the input of sewage.  相似文献

A new species, Sargassum boreale Yoshida et Horiguchi is described. It belongs to the subgenus Bactrophycus section Teretia, with cylindrical receptacles and is distinct from Sargassum confusum C. Agardh, S. pallidum (Turner) C. Agardh and Sargassum microceratium (Turner) C. Agardh in having a rather elongated stem with smooth surface and distantly issuing main branches, with narrow leaves. The distinction between S. boreale and these species is also revealed by a difference in internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS‐2) sequences. In addition to the base substitutions, the existence of a large gap in S. boreale distinguishes this species from others. Sargassum boreale is distributed around Hokkaido and Saghalien to 50°N latitude. A key to the species of section Teretia is provided.  相似文献

A new genus is proposed to accommodate four species belonging in the Ceramium flaccidum complex based on comparative vegetative morphology and rbc L sequence analysis: C. flaccidum (Harvey ex Kuetzing) Ardissone (1871), C. gracillimum, C. Agardh (1824), C. fimbriatum S. & G. (1924) and C. rectocorticum Dawson 1950. Comparative rbcL sequence analysis indicates that this complex forms a distinct monophyletic clade separate from other Ceramium species. Although C. flaccidum has been placed in Hormoseras Kuetzing 1841 (as H. flaccidum Harvey ex Kuetzing 1862), the type species of Hormoceras is Ceramium diaphanum . The new genus is characterized by alternate branching, incomplete cortication, production of three cortical filament initials of which the basipetal initial divides horizontally, and unicellular rhizoids terminating in pad-like structures produced from periaxial cells. Cortical filament development is discussed for related genera in the tribe Ceramieae ( Campylaephora, Carpoblepharis, Centroceras, Ceramium, Corallophila, Herpochondria, Microcladia, Reinboldiella ). Rbc L-based phylogenies indicate that the new genus is sister to Centroceras , a genus possessing three cortical filament initials. The phylogenetic relationships within the tribe may correlate with cortication patterns that characterize each genus  相似文献

Synopsis A study of two populations of the bonnethead shark,Sphyrna tiburo was conducted in Florida Bay and Tampa Bay, Florida from September 1982 to December 1986. The maintenance of sharks in captivity at the Marine Science and Conservation Center in the Florida Keys, and the collection of sharks from widely separated geographical areas allowed the examination of latitudinal variation in reproduction. Several reproductive parameters were found to differ: (1) size at maturation, (2) age at maturation, (3) time of fertilization, (4) rate of embryonic development, (5) size at birth, (6) the energetic investment in producing offspring, (7) gestation period, and (8) the incidence of infertility. Average litter size and maximum age of females was not different between the two populations. These contrasting life history parameters are not easily explained. Food limitation and seasonal differences between the two areas are considered as factors controlling reproduction in these populations. It is noteworthy that the average size of adult females in Tampa Bay is significantly greater than that of Florida Keys sharks. This size difference may be important in explaining the observed differences in reproduction.  相似文献

Ten species of Sargassum (Sargassaceae, Phaeophyceae) were found along the Gulf of Thailand. Morphological characteristics of Sargassum baccularia (Mertens) C.A. Agardh, S. binderi Sonder, S. cinereum J.G. Agardh, S.crassifolium J.G. Agardh, S. longifructum Tseng et Lu, S. oligocystum Montagne, S. polycystum C.A. Agardh, S. siliquosum J.G. Agardh, S. swartzii (Turner) C.A. Agardh and one unidentified species were examined and are described in detail. The most common species were S. polycystum distributed widely in almost all the study sites, S. crassifolium restricted to Prachuap Khirikhan Province, S. longifructum restricted to Chumphon Province, S. siliquosum restricted to Surat Thani Province and one unidentified species restricted to Songkhla Province. Three species (S. cinereum, S. longifructum and S. swartzii) are new records for the algal flora of Thailand. Five species (S. baccularia, S. cinereum, S. longifructum, S. polycystum and the unidentified species) belong to the section Zygocarpicae (J.G. Agardh) Setchell.  相似文献

Baseline genotypes were established for 256 individuals of Caulerpa collected from 27 field locations in Florida (including the Keys), the Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, and Honduras, nearly doubling the number of available GenBank sequences. On the basis of sequences from the nuclear rDNA‐ITS 1+2 and the chloroplast tufA regions, the phylogeny of Caulerpa was reassessed and the presence of invasive strains was determined. Surveys in central Florida and southern California of >100 saltwater aquarium shops and 90 internet sites revealed that >50% sold Caulerpa. Of the 14 Caulerpa species encountered, Caulerpa racemosa was the most common, followed by Caulerpa sertularioides, Caulerpa prolifera, Caulerpa mexicana, and Caulerpa serrulata. None of the >180 field‐collected individuals (representing 13 species) was the invasive strain of Caulerpa taxifolia or C. racemosa. With one exception (a sample of C. racemosa from a shop in southern California belonged to the invasive Clade III strain), no invasive strains were found in saltwater aquarium stores in Florida or on any of the internet sites. Although these results are encouraging, we recommend a ban on the sale of all Caulerpa species (including “live rock”) because: morphological identification of Caulerpa species is unreliable (>12% misidentification rate) and invasive strains can only be identified by their aligned DNA sequences, and because the potential capacity for invasive behavior in other Caulerpa species is far from clear. The addition of the Florida region to the genetic data base for Caulerpa provides a valuable proactive resource for invasion biologists as well as researchers interested in the evolution and speciation of Caulerpa.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequence data of molecular markers 18S rRNA, RUBISCO spacer, and cox2‐3 intergenic spacer were integrated to infer the phylogeny of Gracilaria species, collected from the western coast of India, reducing the possibility of misidentification and providing greater phylogenetic resolution. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using cox2‐3 and RUBISCO spacer sequences, exhibiting the same clustering but differing slightly from that of the rRNA‐based phylogenetic tree. The phylogeny inferred from the combined data set confers an analogous pattern of clustering, compared with those of trees constructed from individual data sets. The combined data set resulted in a phylogeny with better resolution, which supported the clade with higher consistency index, retention index, and bootstrap values. It was observed that Gracilaria foliifera (Forssk.) Børgesen is closer to G. corticata (J. Agardh) J. Agardh varieties, while G. salicornia (C. Agardh) E. Y. Dawson and G. fergusonii J. Agardh both originated from the same clade. The position of G. textorii (Suringar) De Toni faltered and toppled between G. salicornia and G. dura (C. Agardh) J. Agardh; however, G. gracilis (Stackh.) M. Steentoft, L. M. Irvine et W. F. Farnham was evidently distant from the rest of the species.  相似文献

Between 1992 and 2000, we sampled 504 randomly chosen locations in theFlorida Keys, Florida, USA, for the elemental content of green leaves of theseagrass Thalassia testudinum. Carbon content ranged from29.4–43.3% (dry weight), nitrogen content from 0.88–3.96%, andphosphorus content from 0.048–0.243%. N and P content of the samples werenot correlated, suggesting that the relative availability of N and P variedacross the sampling region. Spatial pattern in C:N indicated a decrease in Navailability from inshore waters to the reef tract 10 km offshore;in contrast, the pattern in C:P indicated an increase in P availability frominshore waters to the reef tract. The spatial pattern in N:P was used to definea P-limited region of seagrass beds in Florida Bay and near shore, and anN-limited region of seagrass beds offshore. The close juxtaposition ofN–and P-limited regions allows the possibility that N loading from thesuburban Florida Keys could influence the offshore, N-limited seagrass bedswithout impacting the more nearshore, P-limited seagrass beds.  相似文献

Lack of recovery of the sea urchin Diadema antillarum in the Caribbean region following a widespread epizootic in 1983–1984 has garnered great interest due to the role of this species as a grazer of macroalgae that exclude reef-building corals. In the Florida Keys, USA, previous research suggests that reestablishment of D. antillarum is limited by low fertilization success and a lack of larval supply. However, the physical mechanisms determining larval supply in the Florida Keys remain poorly resolved. Here, we use coupled biological and physical oceanographic datasets of D. antillarum larval supply to settlement collectors, sea surface temperatures and heights, and the Okubo Weiss parameter to examine a link between influx of larvae to the middle Florida Keys and Tortugas Eddy activity in the Straits of Florida. The greatest magnitude of settlement over 3 months of measurements occurred from late May to late June 2015, coinciding with the passage and dissociation of a Tortugas Eddy. Settlement occurred on collectors only at offshore bank-barrier reef sites, consistent with a temperature signal of a passing eddy at these sites. No D. antillarum were observed by divers at sites 1 yr following settlement on the collectors. The results indicate that despite the lack of population recovery, D. antillarum larval influx can occur during intermittent oceanographic events.
