A new species of marine endolithic cyanophyte, Hyella pyxis Lukas and Hoffman (Order: Pleurocapsales), differs from other species of Hyella in its cell and filament dimensions, the manner in which its branches are initiated and the presence of gloeocapsin in the sheaths of colonies from the intertidal zone. Hyella pyxis colonies consist of a small cluster of coccoid cells located at the substrate surface and long, conspicuously branched filaments composed of cells that are longer than they are wide. Branches are initiated by the reorientation of the distal end of a filament cell or by the elongation of a filament cell, usually at one of its distal corners. Chromatic adaptation was not observed perhaps accounting for the relatively shallow depth limit of this species. Hyella pyxis was found within mollusk shells from the continental margin of eastern Florida to a depth of 50 m and carbonate rocks in the intertidal zone on Bermuda.  相似文献

A new species of endolithic cyanobacteria, Hyella racemus sp. nov. (order Pleurocapsales), penetrates ooid grains in actively shoaling sands in shallow (0.5–5 m) waters of the Bahama carbonate platform and the Arabian Gulf. Hyella racemus is characterized by prolific branching, resulting in dense grape-like cell clusters that penetrate the carbonate substrate. The clusters radiate inward and form deep, isodiametric pits. Resin casts of these pits are framboid (raspberry-like) in shape. The borehole morphology conforms with the shape of the endolith body and can be identified in resin-cast preparations. Cell division is by cleavage with regular alternation of division planes. The sheath is tight, layered, and colorless or yellow-brown when under strong illumination. The new species is one of the most common endoliths in ooids of the Bahamas and the Arabian Gulf It differs from other members of this endolithic genus by its branching pattern and less prominent apical cells.  相似文献

This paper describes a new genus and species of endolithic microorganism, Cyanosaccus piriformis Lukas and Golubic (Cyanophyta, Pleurocapsales). It is characterized by 1) having one to four spherical to pear-shaped cells within a stalked, gelatinous sheath, 2) its mode of reproduction by release of a large number of baeocytes produced by the proximal daughter cell following transverse binary fission of the parent cell, and 3) its ability to bore into and dwell within carbonate substrates in the marine environment. Its habit of asymmetrical sheath production allies it with the common microboring genera Hyella and Solentia within the family Hyellaceae. Cyanosaccus is a common inhabitant of mollusk shells found in water depths ranging from +0.5 to –75 m MLW on the eastern Florida continental margin and in carbonate sands or rocks in the intertidal and subtidal zones of the Bermuda and Bahama Islands. Its distribution within and among inhabited substrates is patchy due to its mode of reproduction and growth.  相似文献

Hyella immanis, a new species of endolithic cyanobacterium that penetrates carbonate ooid sand grains in the Arabian/Persian Gulf, is formally described. Natural populations of the new taxon were sampled in moving ooid shoals at four locations along the east coast of Saudi Arabia, together with seven other endolithic taxa. The new species was isolated, and its properties were studied under experimental conditions. Small reproductive cells (baeocytes) exhibited positively phototactic gliding motility following release. In culture they grew into colonies forming isodiametric packages (prevalent on agar) and distinct pseudofilaments (prevalent in liquid culture). Carbonate penetration of the cultured strain in liquid culture proceeded at a rate of up to 10 μ· d?1. Agitation of cultures with magnetic stirrers enhanced the frequency of borings and the initial boring rates, but it had no effect on the continuing boring activity. A fossil counterpart of the new species was identified in Upper Proterozoic (700–800 million years old) silicified oolitic and pisolitic rocks of East Greenland.  相似文献

Summary All eight types of blue-green algal community sampled from the intertidal sediments of the lagoon of Aldabra showed detectable rates of acetylene reduction, and six of them showed at least some examples of rates considered by previous authors to be rapid. When the reduction rates are related to the chlorophyll a contents of the communities, the maximum rates recorded come in the following order: Hyella balani, Scytonema sp., Hyella balani-Schizothrix sp., Calothrix crustacea, Rivularia sp., Microcoleus chthonoplastes, Hyella balani-purple sulphur bacteria, Pleurocapsa-Chroococcus. With the exception of the mixed Hyella balani-purple sulphur bacterial community, the rate of acetylene reduction was in all experiments greater in the light than in the dark, the difference being significant (P<0.05) in the majority of cases. The rates were similar in all experiments whether incubation was carried out with sea or brackish water. It seems probable that nitrogen fixation by blue-green algal communities makes an important addition to the lagoon ecosystem, and that not only heterocystous, but also some non-heterocystous, species are involved. Among the latter, the data for Hyella balani and Microcoleus chthonoplastes are especially convincing.  相似文献

Microboring endoliths were studied in dead modern corals collected at various depths and in growth position on La Surprise atoll in New Caledonia. Eight taxa of microborers were regularly observed: three cyanobacteria (Hyella caespitosa, Mastigocoleus testarum, and Plectonema terebrans), two chlorophytes (Ostreobium quekettii and Phaeophila dendroides) and three fungal forms (Dodgella priscus, and two unidentified fungi). The relative abundance of each taxon was determined in the modern corals throughout the studied sampling interval (from 0 down to 40 m water depth). This allowed us to propose for the first time a bathymetric model based on microendolith assemblages colonizing in situ hard-substrates of corals. In this model, the occurrence of the cyanobacteria Hyella and Mastigocoleus indicates a bathymetric range from 0 down to a water depth of 3 and 6 m respectively. The chlorophyta O. quekettii, associated with the cyanobacterium P. terebrans and fungi, is dominant from 10 to 40 m depth, which is the lower limit of our sampling. The distribution ranges of individual taxa observed in the dead coral substrates from New Caledonia are much narrower than those reported in the literature for other substrates.The bathymetric model based on distribution of microborers in modern corals was then applied to interpret the trace assemblages of microborers observed in Holocene corals collected by drilling on two reef sites of New Caledonia : La Surprise islet, in the vicinity of the sampling sites of the modern corals, and the barrier reef of Bayes, on the NE coast of Grande Terre. The paleodepth interpretations performed at various levels along the cores allow identification of several shallowing-upward sequences during the last 7000 years of reef growth in New Caledonia. Differences in the thickness of these sequences between La Surprise and Bayes sites were interpreted as differences in the space available for accommodation between the two sites, in turn related to the differential subsidence that affected New Caledonia during Holocene times. The use of the microendolith trace assemblages in paleodepth reconstructions of Holocene reefs from New Caledonia allowed detection of relative sea level variations finer than those deduced from changes in coralgal assemblages.  相似文献

Hybridization tests among the four sibling species of the Drosophila melanogaster complex were made to determine the reproductive status of the recently discovered D. sechellia (which is endemic to a few islands and islets of the Seychelles archipelago) with regard to its three close relatives, D. mauritiana (endemic to Mauritius) and Afrotropical strains of the two cosmopolitan species D. melanogaster and D. simulans. Interstrain variation in the ability to hybridize with other species was also analyzed for D. melanogaster and D. simulans. D. mauritiana and D. simulans appear to be more weakly isolated from each other than either species is from D. sechellia. A striking unilateral mating success is observed in the cross of D. sechellia with D. simulans. The most extreme isolation is between D. melanogaster and its three siblings. Variation in the ability of strains to hybridize is observed in heterospecific crosses between D. simulans and either D. melanogaster or D. mauritiana.  相似文献

Morphological similarities of many parasites and their hosts have led to speculation that some groups of plant, animal, fungal, and algal parasites may have evolved directly from their hosts. These parasites, which have been termed adelphoparasites in the botanical literature, and more recently, agastoparasites in the insect literature, may evolve monophyletically from one host and radiate secondarily to other hosts or, these parasites may arise polyphyletically, each arising from its own host. In this study we compare the internal transcribed spacer regions of the nuclear ribosomal repeats of species and formae specialis (host races) included in the red algal parasite genus Asterocolax with its hosts, which all belong to the Phycodrys group of the Delesseriaceae and with closely related nonhost taxa of the Delesseriaceae. These analyses reveal that species of Asterocolax have evolved polyphyletically. Asterocolax erythroglossi from the North Atlantic host Erythroglossum laciniatum appears to have evolved from its host, whereas taxa included in the north Pacific species Asterocolax gardneri have had two independent origins. Asterocolax gardneri from the host Polyneura latissima probably arose directly from this host. In contrast, all other A. gardneri formae specialis appear to have originated from either Phycodrys setchellii or P. isabelliae and radiated secondarily onto other closely related taxa of the Phycodrys group, including Nienburgia andersoniana and Anisocladella pacifica. Gamete crossing experiments confirm that A. gardneri from each host is genetically isolated from both its host, and from other A. gardneri and their hosts. Cross-infection experiments reveal that A. gardneri develops normally only on its natural host, although some abberrant growth may occur on alternate hosts. The ability of red algal parasites to radiate secondarily to other red algal taxa, where they may become isolated genetically and speciate, suggests that this process of speciation is not a “genetic dead end” but one that may give rise to related clusters of parasite species.  相似文献

A new species of conifer wood, Xenoxylon morrisonense, is described from the Morrison Formation on the Colorado Plateau. It is compared with other species of Xenoxylon, with X. latiporosum being the closest. Xenoxylon morrisonense differs from X. latiporosum in its marked indentations, simple pits on the horizontal and tangential walls of ray cells, absence of crassulae, presence of wood parenchyma, and thin borders on podocarpoid type crossfield pits. The origin of the septa in the tracheids is summarized, and the possible affinity of Xenoxylon with the Podocarpaceae is considered.  相似文献

A collection of anatomically preserved conifer cones from the Early Cretaceous of Virginia contains two new species of the extinct pinaceous genus Pityostrobus. Superficially, the fossil cones resemble those of modern species of Picea. However, the fossils reveal such a peculiar mixture of anatomical features that they cannot be assigned to any extant genus of the Pinaceae. One of the new species, Pityostrobus hueberi, is most comparable with Pityostrobus corneti Alvin from the Early Cretaceous of Belgium. Pityostrobus virginiana, the other new species, differs from all other members of the genus in only slight—but nonetheless significant—attributes. Pityostrobus hueberi and P. virginiana are the first species of this genus to be reported from Early Cretaceous sediments of the North American Atlantic Coastal Plain. As such, they increase our knowledge of the structural variation exhibited by ancient members of the Pinaceae.  相似文献

Two species of Pluchea have been introduced into the Hawaiian Islands in the present century. These are P. indica, native to southeastern Asia, and P. odorata, native to the western hemisphere. Both are erect shrubs. Within the past 30 years a third Pluchea taxon, a sprawling shrub morphologically distinct from the two species, has appeared in the Hawaiian Islands and on other islands in the tropical Pacific. On the basis of morphology, fertility, meiotic behavior, and other evidence, it is concluded that the third taxon is a hybrid between the two species. The hybrid is highly sterile; it has a limited capacity for asexual reproduction. Metaphase I configurations for both species were found to be 10II; the most frequent configuration in the hybrid was 8II + 4I. The hybrid is given a binomial.  相似文献

Dudresnaya patula sp. nov. is described from 30–60 m depth on the east coast of Florida. The plant grows to a height of at least 10 cm, has flattened axes and main branches to 2 cm wide and 3 mm thick, and has unusually long female reproductive branches. Two new species of Gracilariopsis from the Indian Ocean are proposed—Gracilariopsis (Gp.) mclachlanii Buriyo, Bellorin et M. C. Oliveira sp. nov. from Tanzania and Gracilariopsis persica Bellorin, Sohrabipour et E. C. Oliveira sp. nov. from Iran—based on morphology and DNA sequence data (rbcL gene and SSU rDNA). Both species fit the typical features of Gracilariopsis: axes cylindrical throughout, freely and loosely ramified up to four orders, with an abrupt transition in cell size from medulla to cortex, cystocarps lacking tubular nutritive cells and superficial spermatangia. Nucleotide sequence comparisons of rbcL and SSU rDNA placed both species into the Gracilariopsis clade as distinct species from all the accepted species for this genus, forming a deeply divergent lineage together with some species from the Pacific. The new species are very difficult to distinguish on morphological grounds from other species of Gracilariopsis, stressing the importance of homologous molecular marker comparisons for the species recognition in this character‐poor genus.  相似文献

There are few studies dedicated to species of the Order Parmales all over the world. All 12 taxa described are part of the marine ultraplankton (less than 5 μm). Analysis of filtered samples from the Gulf of Tehuantepec yielded specimens of two taxa of the group. One is a new species, belonging to the genus Tetraparma. Tetraparma insecta sp. nov. is solitary and spherical (2.8–3.8 μm diameter), and all plates lack ornamentations or knobs, the walls are smooth, and only the plate junctions are seen. The shield plates are convex and show a conspicuous rim, some of them with an indentation. This species shows superficial similarities with Tetraparma pelagica, the other species described of the genus, and is very similar to siliceous forms, previously found, with no formal name. The other species is the taxon Triparma laevis form mexicana (Kosman) stat. nov., earlier described for Mexican waters, which has an irregular ala, the shield plates have knobs at the center, the triradiate plates show a “Y”‐shaped keel, and the walls of plates and ala show minute granules. Tetraparma insecta was distributed widely in the study area and was relatively abundant, reaching a density of 4 × 104·L?1, with an evident preference for subsurface waters (10–20 m depth), whereas T. laevis form mexicana was rare and scarce. Both species seem to be restricted to tropical–subtropical waters. We discuss the taxonomy of Parmales, especially concerning the category of subspecies within the group. Parmales is a widespread group in cold and tropical waters.  相似文献

Archaeocalamites lazarii, sp. nov., is based on a few vegetative compressions from the mid-Lower Permian Leonard Series near Fulda, north-central Texas. It is a minor component of a rich biota that includes sphenophylls, pteridophylls, conifers, conchostracan crustaceans, eurypterids, arachnids, insects, xenocanth sharks, and coprolites attributed to tetrapods. Biota and sedimentology indicate deposition in a small freshwater body on a deltaic floodplain. Leaves of A. lazarii differ in size and posture from those of the widespread and characteristically Mississippian aggregate species A. radiatus; nonpreservation of rooting and reproductive organs prevents interpretation of its phylogenetic relationship with other equisetaleans. The main significance of A. lazarii is that it extends the recorded stratigraphic range of the Archaeocalamitaceae from the lowermost Pennsylvanian (Namurian B) to the mid-Lower Permian (Artinskian), leaving a hiatus in records of approximately 55 Ma. This Lazarus taxon also occurs with possibly the youngest recorded eurypterid.  相似文献

A new photosynthetic dinoflagellate species, Coolia canariensis S. Fraga sp. nov., is described based on samples taken from tidal ponds on the rocky shore of the Canary Islands, northeast Atlantic Ocean. Its morphology was studied by LM and SEM. It is almost spherical and has a thick smooth theca with many scattered pores. Plate 1′ is the biggest of the epithecal plates, and 7″ is twice as wide as it is long. Phylogeny inferred from the D1/D2 regions of the LSU nuclear rDNA of three strains of C. canariensis and several strains of other Coolia species, C. monotis, C. sp., showed that C. canariensis strains clustered in a well‐supported clade distinct from the other species. No toxins were detected using mouse bioassay, liquid chromatography with Fluorescence detection (LC‐FLD) or liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry (LC‐MS). Its pigment composition is of the peridinin type of dinoflagellates. Together with this new species, many other strains of C. monotis from the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea have been analyzed for toxin presence, and no evidence of toxin production related to yessotoxins (YTXs) was found, as was previously suggested for C. monotis from Australia.  相似文献

A review of the history of the genus Psilophyton is presented. Two new species with sporangia in organic connection, P. microspinosum and P. dapsile, are described. They are compared with Psilophyton-like plants from Maine and other previously described fertile species of this genus. Evidence from several species in the Trout Valley flora confirms the concept of this taxon as presented by Hueber and Banks. Data based on all sporangium-bearing species of Psilophyton are outlined, certain evolutionary trends within the taxon are tentatively presented, and recommendations for the treatment of the numerous fragmentary species and future new species are suggested.  相似文献

Laurencia marilzae Gil‐Rodríguez, Sentíes et M.T. Fujii sp. nov. is described based on specimens that have been collected from the Canary Islands. This new species is characterized by distinctive yellow–orange as its natural habitat color, a terete thallus, four pericentral cells per vegetative axial segment, presence of secondary pit‐connections between adjacent cortical cells, markedly projecting cortical cells, and also by the presence of corps en cerise (one per cell) present in all cells of the thallus (cortical, medullary, including pericentral and axial cells, and trichoblasts). It also has a procarp‐bearing segment with five pericentral cells and tetrasporangia that are produced from the third and fourth pericentral cells, which are arranged in a parallel manner in relation to fertile branchlets. The phylogenetic position of this taxon was inferred based on chloroplast‐encoded rbcL gene sequence analyses. Within the Laurencia assemblage, L. marilzae formed a distinctive lineage sister to all other Laurencia species analyzed. Previously, a large number of unique diterpenes dactylomelane derivatives were isolated and identified from this taxon. L. marilzae is morphologically, genetically, and chemically distinct from all other related species of the Laurencia complex described.  相似文献

Dinoflagellates of the genus Dinophysis are agents of Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP). They occur along the French coast and affect shellfish exploitation during most of the year (during spring, summer and autumn). Because this species is difficult to cultivate, very little is known about this organism. The first problem is the species‐delineation within this genus which is sometimes unclear based upon the solely on morphological features, in particular for the complex D. acuminata (D. cf. acuminata,, D. cf. norvegica, D. cf.sacculus, and D. skagii) or the complex D. sacculus (D. sacculus and D. pavillardii). The second problem is its detection in natural samples. French Dinophysis blooms have been reported to be toxic under 100 cells L?1, a concentration which corresponds to less than 1 cell 10‐mL?1, as determined by the Utermöhl method of enumeration. Molecular tools may help to resolve these two kind of problems. During one year (spring 1999 to spring 2000), more than 100 fixed samples containing Dinophysis spp. cells were collected along the French coast by the French monitoring network (or REPHY; http://www. ifremer.fr). The genetic diversity of Dinophysis spp. was studied by sequencing and analysis of ribosomal DNA genes. We found that sequences were hightly conserved between species or within the D. acuminata or D. sacculus complex. Two oligonucleotide probes, specific to these complex groups, were designed. Their specificity and sensitivity are actually tested on natural samples by a PCR‐based assay. Furthur investigation will include the development of standard molecular diagnostics due to their rapid and sensitive detection in natural samples.  相似文献
