The changes generated by a Spanish trout farm, located in the upper Río Tajuña (Central Spain), on benthic macroinvertebrates were studied by comparing biological characteristics of an upstream station (S-1) with those of three downstream sites placed 0.01 (S-2), 0.15 (S-3) and 1 (S-4) km below the fish farm outlet. In addition, a biological index is presented for estimating relative contributions (informative weights) of major macroinvertebrate groups to the macrobenthic community. Species richness and Shannon diversity were depressed downstream from the trout farm. However, density and biomass values were significantly higher at downstream stations during the summer, presumably due to an increase in water temperature and food supply. Amphipods, plecopterans and planarians were the macroinvertebrates most adversely affected by the fish farm effluent. Coleopterans, ephemeropterans and trichopterans were absent immediately below the outlet (S-2), but exhibited a partial downstream spatial recovery of their informative weights at S-3 and S-4. The abundance of tubificid worms, chironomids, simuliids and leeches increased below the trout farm, with dipterans predominating at all downstream sampling sites. The macrobenthic trophic structure was altered downstream from the trout farm by a significant increase in collectors (gathers and filter feeders) and predators, and a marked decrease in shredders and scrapers. The highest environmental impact was found just below the troutfarm outlet (S-2). It is concluded that the fish farm generates potamological effects on the functional structure of the macrobenthic community.  相似文献

An assessment of the performance of a resistivity fish counter   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Closed-circuit television was used to provide a visual record of the events associated with the counts recorded by a resistivity fish counter. The fish seen were classified as' large'fish > 50 cm length and' small'fish of < 50 cm. Some of the' large' fish escaped detection by the counter, some' small'fish were counted and some counts were registered when nothing was seen. The sensitivity of the counter varied inversely with water conductivity which varied inversely with discharge.
Evidence was obtained suggesting that fish ascending a weir tend to swim closer to the bottom than do those descending. It was found that fish tended to move upstream just after sunset and downstream just before sunrise except when the water was turbid and when the fish were very close to spawning. The numbers of fish movements recorded increased during those periods when discharge was decreasing after a spate but when spawning activity was at its peak, increased activity occurred in the complete absence of any change in discharge. Instances of the same fish re-crossing the counting zone several times were recorded and the simultaneous passage of more than one fish through the counting zone was observed.  相似文献

Egg-to-fry development and survival of brown trout Salmo trutta were compared in two rivers of the Pyrenean piedmont, the Nive d'Arnéguy, with few human activities, and the Nive des Aldudes, with many anthropogenic activities including 11 fish farms and two sewage treatment plants (STPs). Survival was estimated between spawning (early December) and emergence time (early March) by means of capsules, 7 cm3 in volume, filled with green eggs then inserted into the gravel of artificial redds at spawning sites. In the Nive des Aldudes, three sets of conditions were studied: a fish farm near the springs, a fish farm and an STP in a village, and a series of fish farms and an STP in a village. In each situation, two artificial redds were created upstream and two others downstream from the fish farms. In the Nive d'Arnéguy, four sites were equipped: each of the two downstream sites with two artificial redds, and the two upstream sites with one redd. Substratum characteristics (proportion of fine particles) and the quality of surface and interstitial water (oxygen content, ammonia and nitrite nitrogen) were periodically measured. There was no redd substratum difference between sites upstream and downstream of fish farms. Survival to fry emergence was higher in the Nive d'Arnéguy (63·5%) than in the Nive des Aldudes (47·7%). In this latter river, the nitrogen released from the STPs was 0·5% that from fish farms. Fish farming impaired survival close to fish farm effluents (31·6%), as compared to survival upstream (63·6%), and induced a development delay during the yolk-sac fry stage. These differences were mainly linked to a drop in the dissolved oxygen content in interstitial water induced by the nitrogen flow in surface and interstitial waters.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in a small desert stream were influenced by environmental changes caused by recharge of water supply storage basins and an aquaculture operation. Simulium virgatum was the most abundant benthic insect collected in Whitewater Canyon (Riverside County, CA) after April; however, it was never found in trout farm effluent where the ammonium‐nitrogen concentration was > 0.25 mg/liter. S. virgatum densities downstream of the input of water from the Colorado River aqueduct were lower than at other sampling sites in the Whitewater River. Simulium tescorum, an especially anthropophilic black fly, was most abundant during February and March, was not collected from late spring through early autumn, and was found only in the highly enriched, less variable flow of trout farm effluent. The mean concentrations of ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen in the trout farm effluent nearly 1 km from the fish holding ponds were ten and two times, respectively, the ambient levels in the Whitewater River upstream of the effluent discharge point. A combination of factors probably contributed to the presence of S. tescorum in the trout farm effluent including homogenization of the flow regime, enrichment of larval resources, and the development of riparian vegetation that provided oviposition and attachment sites.  相似文献

Accidental escapees from aquacultural facilities are an ongoing problem facing scientists, conservationists, policy makers and naturalists throughout the world. The topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva , a small cyprinid native to Southeast Asia, was introduced to Romanian waters in 1960 via the aquaculture trade and has since spread throughout Europe. It first appeared in England in an ornamental fish farm near Romsey in Hampshire. The aim of the present study was to quantify the dispersal of this potentially highly invasive species from an ornamental fish farm into the wild. In order to measure the dispersal of escapees, intensive electrofishing surveys were carried out between June and September 2003 in the catchment downstream of the fish farm. The distribution of topmouth gudgeon in the catchment was found to be limited and patchy. The presence of small individuals suggests that the species has successfully established itself in the wild, but this remains to be confirmed. The results were examined in light of invasion theory principles of biological resistance and ecological fitness.  相似文献

The study was undertaken on three adjacent rivers in NW Ireland, on one of which an Atlantic salmon Salmo salar freshwater juvenile rearing unit is situated. Two markers which distinguished farm and wild populations were used. An Ava II-B RFLP in the ND1 region of mtDNA was at a frequency of 0.58 in the farm strain but absent in the wild populations. Allele E at minisatellite locus Ssa- A45/2/l was at a frequency of 0.91 in farm samples, but at a maximum of 0.41 in the populations in the two rivers adjacent to the one with the juvenile rearing unit. The farm strain showed a significant reduction in mean heterozygosity (0.281 ± 0.057), over three minisatellite loci examined, compared to wild samples (0.532 ± 0.063). The occurrence of farm genotypes and the independent occurrence of mtDNA and minisatellite markers in several parr samples from the river indicated that escaped juvenile salmon completed their life cycle, bred and interbred with native fish, upon their return to the river. Escaped fish homed accurately, as adults, to the site of escape, i.e. the area adjacent to the hatchery outflow in the upstream part of the river. Breeding of males in the lower part of the river was also indicated but this could have been due to mature male parr which had moved downstream. The return of adults of farm origin to the river to breed was indicated by the presence of the Ava II-B haplotype in adults netted in the estuary.  相似文献

On a commercial fish farm in Western Scotland, smolting Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., showed no major changes in serum thyroxine (T4) levels in the spring. In contrast, serum T4 levels in smolting, wild salmon, trapped as they left the Girnock Burn, Aberdeenshire, varied markedly over this period. Serum T4 levels were correlated with the stream discharge rate pertaining as the fish left the stream. Levels in migrating, smolting fish were higher than those in fish captured above the fish-trap by electro-fishing. In a stream channel, serum T4 levels in smolting fish caught previously in the fish-trap were rapidly elevated by exposure to increased water-flow, whereas levels in fish previously captured above the trap remained substantially unchanged. Serum T4 levels in salmon parr leaving the stream in autumn were generally lower than those in smolting fish leaving in spring and were not demonstrably affected by stream discharge rate.  相似文献

Based on feed composition, fish composition and feed conversion, some theoretical effects of feeding on waste discharge are calculated to illustrate the appropriateness of farm effluent monitoring. The effects of feed conversion and feed spillage and feed composition on waste discharge (suspended and dissolved N, P & COD) are demonstrated. Slight variations in feed conversion at the moment of sampling, especially those evoked by feed spillage, have tremendous consequences for discharge values. It appears crucial to determine whether observed conversions are explained by inherent efficiencies of fish growth, or whether higher growth efficiencies are combined with feed spillage. Therefore, thorough knowledge of relationships between nutrient intake and growth should be applied to effluent assessment. A calculation is presented to serve as a preliminary assessment of the impacts of these variables on water quality monitoring. The concept is illustrated using measurements from a recirculation pilot eel culture system.  相似文献

Pike‐perch (Sander lucioperca L. 1758) is one of the freshwater species caught by professional fishermen in the Netherlands. The species is also popular with sport fishermen. Little is known about its migration and rehabilitation in large river systems. The aim of the present study was to obtain data on the movements of pike‐perch in the Dutch large river systems and investigate when and how far individual fish swim up‐ or downstream. Seasonal migration was expected. The second objective was to gain information on how many fish pass the Haringvlietdam when migrating downstream during high discharge, and ending up in the North Sea. The third objective was to gain data on how many fish were caught by the fishermen. NEDAP TRAIL System® transponders were surgically implanted in 286 pike‐perch between June 2007 and October 2008. Marked fish could be detected via several detection stations in the river systems throughout the Netherlands and one in the River Rhine station in Germany. Sport fishermen were asked to inform the organization when a marked fish was caught. Data collected between June 2007 and April 2010 indicate a pike‐perch home range of 30–40 km, with some individuals migrating up to more than 200 km. A regional approach regarding fisheries management is necessary. No seasonal patterns were found. Swimming activity was highest during darkness. Results showed pike‐perch around the Haringvlietdam swimming in the saltwater area on the sea side of the dam, and returning to the freshwater Lake Haringvliet, indicating that the structure of the dam is used for feeding, but also that the fish will die if the dam is closed when fish are still outside.  相似文献

The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, escaped from a fish farm in Mazabuka, probably in 1987, and was found in September 1992 on a 75 km stretch of the river, mainly downstream from the site of release. In most areas, except near Mazabuka, O. niloticus was relatively uncommon and so far does not seem to have hybridized with the local tilapias.  相似文献

The downstream migration of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salarL.) and sea trout smolt (S. trutta L.) was investigated using radio telemetry in the spring of 1999 and 2000. Forty wild sea trout smolts, 20 F1 sea trout smolts, 20 hatchery salmon smolts and 20 salmon smolts from river stockings were radio tagged and released in the Danish River Lilleaa. The downstream migration of the different groups of fish was monitored by manual tracking and by three automatic listening stations. The downstream migration of radio tagged smolts of both species occurred concurrently with their untagged counterparts. The diel migration pattern of the radio tagged smolts was predominantly nocturnal in both species. Wild sea trout smolt migrated significantly faster than both the F1 trout and the introduced salmon. There was no correlation between net ground speed, gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity or fish length in any of the different groups. The migration speed of wild sea trout smolts was positively correlated with water discharge in both years. In F1 sea trout smolts, migration speed was positively correlated with temperature in 1999. The migration speed of salmon smolts did not correlate to any of the investigated parameters.  相似文献

基于一维水理模式(HEC-RAS)和河川栖地二维模式(River 2D),以5%权重栖地可使用面积(weighted usable area,WUA)增减率判定筏子溪丁坝对台湾石鱼宾的影响范围,并结合近年台湾地区丁坝设置的相关文献,探讨丁坝对鱼群栖地的影响范围以及丁坝建置要素[如坝高、坝长(阻水率)、流量、河道平均坡降、单双丁坝]对其范围的影响.结果表明:丁坝对下游的影响范围皆远于上游,下游影响范围约为上游的2~6倍.上下游影响范围之比随坡降增加而下降、随丁坝阻水率及流量增加而增加,但流量趋近至10年重现期距时,上下游影响范围比趋于2.双丁坝配置较单丁坝配置有较优的WUA.  相似文献

The weakly electric fish, Gathonemus niger, discharged with a frequency of 4 to 8 Hz during the day and 10 to 16 Hz during the night. The frequency of superimposed burst discharges (32 to 56 Hz) was independent of diurnal factors. The variation of the electric organ discharge frequency during the day was investigated in response to controlled electric stimulus patterns: (a) A free running stimulus frequency of 4 Hz, simulating the resting frequency of another fish, and different stimulus intensities, simulating different distances between two fish. (b) Free running frequencies of 4, 8, 16, …, 128 Hz and two particular stimulus intensities. (c) Discharge coupled stimuli (each discharge triggered an electric stimulus with a fixed delay) and different stimulus intensities.All three kinds of stimuli elicited defined and predictable response discharge patterns supporting the assumption that an electric fish would respond to a particular discharge pattern of another fish also in a similar and predictable manner. Low stimulus intensities (0·04 to 0·2 mV per cm) caused cessation of the discharge activity, a ‘hiding’ or ‘listening’ response. The discharge rate increased linearly with the logarithm of the stimulus intensity. The fish was particularly sensitive to stimulus frequencies which simulated its burst activity (32 to 56 Hz). Discharge coupled stimuli showed that the fish responded to about eight times lower stimulus intensities if the stimulus occurred between two discharges (15 to 30 m-s after the fish's discharge) than if the stimulus occurred within or immediately after the discharge. All suprathreshold stimuli elicited a typical discharge pattern: The irregular resting discharge activity became significantly regular. The degree of regularity was even improved during maintained stimulation. The regularisation of the discharge activity is thought to be involved in the fish's electrolocating system whereas frequency variations are considered as being involved in both the locating system and as communication signals among weakly electric fish.  相似文献

I examine how dispersal of juvenile creek chubs (Semotilusatromaculatus) from beaver ponds into adjacent stream environments interacts with temporal abiotic variability to influence fish foraging, growth, and long-term persistence in the lotic ecosystem. Minnow trapping in upstream and downstream beaver ponds, along with weir traps used to monitor directional movement, indicated that most chubs colonized the stream from the downstream beaver pond. Large annual fluctuations in density of age 0 creek chubs occurred in the stream over a 10-year sampling period. Multiple regression analysis indicated that stream temperature, precipitation, and the density of reproductive creek chubs were not correlated with summer density of age 0 chubs in the stream. The factor most strongly associated with increased density of age 0 creek chubs was creation of the downstream beaver pond during the 6th–7th years of the study, suggesting dispersal from the pond was the primary factor determining age 0 fish density in the stream. Most individuals in the strong year classes neither persisted in the stream through their first winter nor resulted in an increased abundance of older age classes in later years. Comparison of age 0 fish density in summer to the proportion of fish surviving to age 1 in spring suggested that overwinter mortality was density dependent. Furthermore, a comparison of the size structure for age 0 individuals in summer to age 1 individuals the following spring indicated that winter mortality was size dependent. Experiments in an artificial stream adjacent to the natural channel revealed that fish growth was strongly density dependent, decreasing as fish density increased across both spring and summer, and elevated and low discharge. The decline in invertebrate prey captured by the fish and the subsequent decline in fish growth appeared to be particularly pronounced under low discharge in summer. Changes in juvenile creek chub density had no significant effect on benthic insect or crustacean abundance, suggesting that exploitative competition for limited invertebrate drift resources was a more important cause of density- dependent growth than depressed local benthic invertebrate abundance. These results suggest that lotic regions adjacent to beaver ponds act as potential reproductive “sinks” for dispersing juveniles confronting seasonal and flow-mediated restrictions on resource acquisition and growth, and the occurrence of seasonal bottlenecks to their survival, especially harsh winter conditions. The Tampa Bay region of Florida exhibits the highest concentration of ornamental aquaculture facilities in the USA. Because of the diversity of aquaculture products (~800 species and varieties) and extensive production history (began in the 1930s and 1940s), this region could be a hotspot for escaped ornamental fish. We evaluated the scope of ornamental fish invasions in this region by examining (1) escape vectors and (2) the distribution of escaped fish. We investigated potential pathways of fish escape including theft/vandalism, fish transport, bird carry-off, and through effluent discharge. Fish were sampled at the effluent discharge and continued into the surrounding environment. The dominant escape vector was through farm effluents; there was no evidence that theft/vandalism, fish transport, or bird carry-off contributed to fish escape. Most captured fish were natives, especially the ubiquitous Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). Ornamental species and varieties were also captured, especially cichlids and poeciliids such as the Green Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) and Southern Platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus). Ornamental fish were often found in the immediate vicinity of fish farms but were rarely captured in the surrounding environment. Catch per unit effort and ornamental fish diversity declined when moving away from the aquaculture facility effluent and was reduced at sites with a detention pond. The observed fish distribution might be due to relatively cold water in sub-tropical Florida, predatory fish in the environment, and additional factors related to the physical or biological habitat. Ultimately, few ornamental fishes have established in this region despite a long period of extensive culture.  相似文献

Nocturnal downstrean migration of juvenile Atlantic salmon is usually interpreted as increased locomotor activity. The frequency of downstream passages of 0–1 + salmon in an endless stream channel was greater by night than by day in both smoking and non-smolting fish in autumn and spring. Movement increased at dusk, and decreased after dawn. Mature male 1 + fish moved slightly less than immatures in October, but significantly more in November. Total movement frequency was lower at full moon than at other moon phases, and movement was reduced when the moon was up. Under turbid conditions by day, the threshold water velocity inducing nett downstream movement was 8.2 cm s−1, and the relative velocity of fish swimming downstream was never more than one third that of fish holding station at the normal maximal flow of 25–30 cm s−1.
At the end of their first growing season in October, fish which had been offered food continuously through 24 h did not differ in size from those fed by day only, but the latter were significantly larger than those offered food only at night.
We conclude that: (1) the fish fed actively by day, and not by night; (2) station-holding represented activity, and downstream nocturnal movement represented relative inactivity (displacement) which occurred on loss of visual orientation, hence migration resulted from reduced activity; (3) lack of displacement in early autumn has adaptive value for maturing fish, but not for non-spawners.  相似文献

Peaks in the emigratory activity of sexually immature, juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar , occur in autumn and early winter and in spring at the Girnock Burn in Aberdeenshire. Stream temperature is apparently without effect on the release of potentially emigrant fish from the stream. Migrants tend to leave the stream when stream discharge rate is elevated. Whereas downstream movements in autumn and the earlier part of the spring are made almost invariably when the stream's discharge rate is higher than the seasonal norm, later in spring they often occur when discharge rates are lower than the seasonal norm and when no apparent increase in absolute stream discharge rate has occurred. Emigration is depressed in the lunar quarter centred on the full moon. The nature of the relationship between the autumn and spring emigrations is discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the impact of fish farm biodeposition on benthic bacteria, thraustochytrid protists, and heterotrophic protozoa (nanoflagellates and ciliates) in an oligotrophic area of the Mediterranean Sea. The fish farm impact was investigated both on a seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) bed and on soft bottom sediments. In both systems, sediment samples were collected with a multicontrol sampling strategy (i.e., beneath the fish farm and at three control sites per system). The uneaten food pellets supplied to the fish determined the accumulation of sediment organic matter and the enhancement of protein content in impacted sediments (both seagrass bed and soft sediments). In both systems, the abundance and biomass of heterotrophic protists increased significantly beneath the fish farm, but the structure of the protist assemblages responded differently in vegetated and unvegetated sediments. Thraustochytrid abundance increased significantly in impacted seagrass. These results provide evidence that the structure of protist assemblages respond significantly to fish farm biodeposition and indicate that the monitoring of these benthic components provides complementary information for the assessment of the fish farm impact on the benthic systems.  相似文献

Aims: To evaluate the role of manure treatment lagoons of swine operations in the fate of faeces‐ and feed‐borne tetracycline‐resistant genes (TRG). Methods and Results: Samples of feed, faeces, lagoon liquid and lagoon sediment in farm’s vicinity were collected at three swine operations varied on their operational practices and analysed on the presence and frequencies of incidence of sixteen TRG in upstream sources (feed, faeces) and downstream receptacles (lagoon liquid and sediments). The highest frequency of TRG incidence was observed in a farm with extensive antibiotic usage and the lowest in the antibiotic‐free farm. The study revealed a decrease in TRG richness and diversity in the downstream habitats of each farm. The observed TRG diverged into two groups, the persistent genes that were detected both upstream and downstream, and the transient genes that were detected in the upstream habitats but became nondetectable in the lagoons. Quantitative PCR analysis revealed that upstream concentrations and abundances (determined as TRG/16S rRNA gene ratios) of transient and persistent TRG were similar; however, the former were attenuated in the lagoons to the levels below the detection limit, whereas the latter were ~ 100‐1000 fold amplified in their (mostly) liquid phases and were also detected in farms’ vicinities. Conclusion: Manure lagoons of swine operations imposed both positive and negative selection towards faeces‐ and feed‐borne TRG that, respectively, caused either their proliferation or attenuation in those environments. Significance and Impact of the Study: The study reveals that discharge of antibiotic resistance genes from swine farms to the environment is linked to their positive selection (defined as an impact leading to proliferation of those genes) in manure lagoons.  相似文献
