The cerebrally innervated eyes of metamorphically competent larvae, newly metamorphosed larvae, and adults ofAporrhais pespelecani are ultrastructurally investigated and compared. The eyes are composed of a lens, a cornea, and an everse retina. In adults, a humour is located behind the lens. The retina consists of two different types of cells: sensory cells and supportive cells. The present study confirms earlier results and demonstrates that the distal part of the sensory cells is altered during ontogenesis. In metamorphically competent larvae, the sensory cells are exclusively ciliary. In newly metamorphosed larvae and in adults, however, the sensory cells are of the mixed type, bearing both cilia and microvilli. Furthermore, the findings confirm that both the supportive and corneal cells, as well as the distal supportive cell processes which are restricted to the eyes of adults are involved in lens formation.  相似文献

Molecular phylogenetics of Caenogastropoda (Gastropoda: Mollusca)   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Caenogastropoda is the dominant group of marine gastropods in terms of species numbers, diversity of habit and habitat and ecological importance. This paper reports the first comprehensive multi-gene phylogenetic study of the group. Data were collected from up to six genes comprising parts of 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA (five segments), 12S rRNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, histone H3 and elongation factor 1alpha. The alignment has a combined length of 3995 base positions for 36 taxa, comprising 29 Caenogastropoda representing all of its major lineages and seven outgroups. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses were conducted. The results generally support monophyly of Caenogastropoda and Hypsogastropoda (Caenogastropoda excepting Architaenioglossa, Cerithioidea and Campanilioidea). Within Hypsogastropoda, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses identified a near basal clade of nine or 10 families lacking an anterior inhalant siphon, and Cerithiopsidae s.l. (representing Triphoroidea), where the siphon is probably derived independently from other Hypsogastropoda. The asiphonate family Eatoniellidae was usually included in the clade but was removed in one Bayesian analysis. Of the two other studied families lacking a siphon, the limpet-shaped Calyptraeidae was associated with this group in some analyses, but the tent-shaped Xenophoridae was generally associated with the siphonate Strombidae. The other studied hypsogastropods with an anterior inhalant siphon include nine families, six of which are Neogastropoda, the only traditional caenogastropod group above the superfamily-level with strong morphological support. The hypotheses that Neogastropoda are monophyletic and that the group occupies a derived position within Hypsogastropoda are both contradicted, but weakly, by the molecular analyses. Despite the addition of large amounts of new molecular data, many caenogastropod lineages remain poorly resolved or unresolved in the present analyses, possibly due to a rapid radiation of the Hypsogastropoda following the Permian-Triassic extinction during the early Mesozoic.  相似文献

In the larvae of some cranchiid squids the eyes are carried sideways on long stalks and also possess a presumed luminous organ. The structure of this organ is described but the only sign of light producing tissues is some possible luminescent bacteria. The stalked eye may be connected with plankton feeding at great depths, perhaps improving distance judgement. The older animals of these species carry a different form of luminous organ.  相似文献

Abstract. The external epithelial cilia and other surface structures of the nuculoid protobranchs Nuculana pernula and Nucula nitidosa were studied. The gill lamellae and labial palps are partly covered with very long cilia. These have a modified slender distal portion, an ordinary metazoan-type basal body, a basal foot. and a single, long cross-striated rootlet. In cilia on the gills of N. nitidosa , the basal foot is thick and attaches to the next basal body directly behind. Unciliated surface areas on the gills, labial palps, and foot are covered with a dense brushborder of microvilli. We observed no specific homologies between the cilia of the protobranchs studied and the epidermal cilia of the enigmatic Xenoturbella bocki , hence the recent hypothesis of a close connection of the latter to the protobranch bivalves is questioned.  相似文献

The cerebrally innervated eyes of the veliger larvae of Smaragdia sp. and Strombus sp. are composed of a lens, a cornea, and an everse retina. The retina contains two different types of cells, ciliary sensory cells and supportive cells which bear one or two cilia. It is suggested that: (a) the ciliary photoreceptors of these teleplanic veliger larvae are correlated with a long pelagic life in the ocean, which can last up to twelve months, and (b) that structural details of the photoreceptors can change during ontogenesis (ciliary vs rhabdomeric). Furthermore, the cilia of the supportive cells apparently tranport lens material and thus play an important role in lens formation. A decomposition mechanism of pigment granules is examined.Abbreviations bb basal body - bp basal plate - c cilium - cc corneal cell - cm ciliary membranes - cw ciliary whorl - ecm extracellular matrix - gr electron-dense granules - l lens - lb lamellar body - mp membranous pieces - mt microtubules - mv microvilli - n nucleus - oc optic cavity - on optic nerve - pg pigment granule - sc sensory cell - sj septate junction - spc supportive cell - v vesicles  相似文献

The relationship between three genera considered basal in the Chromodorididae (Cadlina, Tyrinna, Cadlinella) has not yet been resolved by traditional morphological means. Here we examined the sperm ultrastructure of Tyrinna nobilis, Tyrinna evelinae, Cadlina flavomaculata and Cadlina cf. nigrobranchiata, with the expectation of finding phylogenetically informative characters. No Tyrinna or Cadlina species showed sperm similarities to Cadlinella. Both Cadlina species and Tyrinna nobilis (but not T. evelinae) exhibited coarse striations in the acrosomal pedestal. The putative fibers that occurred between the coarse striations of the pedestal are condensed into a layer in Cadlina and Tyrinna, but not in other species that also have coarse striations (Gymnodoris), and may constitute evidence for a close relationship. Tyrinna evelinae possessed fine acrosomal striations, which was shared with other Chromodorididae, Actinocyclidae and the cryptobranchs Rostanga and Aphelodoris. We also examined the sperm ultrastructure of ‘Chromodorisambiguus, an animal which has shown molecular affinities to species of Cadlina, and not Chromodoris. The sperm of ‘C.’ ambiguus did not exhibit the typical Cadlina characteristics, but also showed important differences to other investigated Chromodoris species.  相似文献

In gastropod mollusk Baicalia carinata Dybowski, 1875, sampled in different sites of the Lake Baikal, comparison of 81 sequences of internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) located between the genes for 18S rRNA and 5.8S rRNA, and of 100 sequences of the fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome-c-oxidase subunit 1 gene (CO1) was performed. Molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the endemic mollusk species studied formed at least two distinct populations, Southwestern and Eastern. Statistical significance of the species subdivision into two populations was evaluated using the Mann-Whitney rank test.  相似文献

The Assimineidae are a family of amphibious microgastropods that can be mostly found in estuaries and mangroves in South Africa. These snails often occur in great numbers and are ecologically important to the St Lucia Estuary, which forms a crucial part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Genetic and shell morphometric analyses were conducted on individuals collected from nine localities distributed from the northern lake regions to the southern lake and the mouth of the St Lucia estuarine lake. Mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (28S) DNA was used to construct Bayesian Inference, Neighbour-joining, Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood trees. Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis were performed on standard shell parameter data. Results indicate that two different taxa are present in St Lucia. The taxon comprising individuals from the South Lake and St Lucia Estuary Mouth is identified as Assiminea cf. capensis Bartsch, in accordance with the latest taxonomic consensus. The taxon comprising assimineid individuals from False Bay, North Lake and South Lake, is here tentatively named “Assiminea” aff. capensis (Sowerby). These two taxa exhibit patterns of spatial overlap that appear to vary depending on environmental parameters, particularly salinity. The need to resolve the complex taxonomy of assimineids is highlighted.  相似文献

Abstract. The ultrastructure of the ciliary apparatus of multiciliated epidermal cells of the trochophore of Epimenia babai and the adult of Strophomenia scandens was studied. The trochal cirri of E. babai consists of long cilia with unspecialized tips. The surfaces between the trochs are sparsely covered with shorter cilia of similar structure except for length. In the adult of S. scandens , the foot is covered by a dense mat of cilia with blunt electron-dense tips. In both E. babai and S. scandens , all cilia have two perpendicularly orientated rootlets. This condition is similar to that of the Chaetodermomorpha (=Caudofoveata) and Polyplacophora. In other molluscs studied to date, the cilia of multiciliated epidermal cells have a single rootlet or a derivative thereof. The presence of two ciliary rootlets likely represents the basal plesiomorphic state for the Bilateria. The existence of this character in the Neomeniomorpha, Chaetodermomorpha, and Polyplacophora is congruent with the hypothesis of a basal position of these taxa within the Mollusca.  相似文献

Grain density microautoradiography (MAR) was used to study uptake of dissolved amino acids (DFAA) in microalgal communities from a sandy bay on the west coast of Sweden. A mixture of fifteen 3H-labeled amino acids (final concentration 20–80 nmol l–1) was added to sediment samples collected from two depths (0.5 and 4 m), on five occasions representing different seasons. On all sampling occasions, the microflora was dominated by diatoms (> 85% of the total biomass). Cyanobacteria occurred in the summer and autumn, but never dominated the biomass. Between 5 and 48% of all counted algal cells showed uptake (1–44% of algal biomass). Uptake was recorded for all majors microalgal groups (diatoms, cyanobacteria and autotrophic flagellates). Uptake was more frequent on the shallow site and the highest proportion of cells showing uptake occurred in May. Although uptake was common among both motile and attached growth forms, on several occasions uptake frequencies were higher for attached cells. As the attached fraction is frequently burried out of the photic zone, and not able to rapidly migrate towards light, this implies that heterotrophic capacity should be valuable. Also at species level, some taxa showed higher uptake frequencies than others, for example populations of motile diatom species that displayed a seasonal behaviour (blooming species), such as Nitzschia cf. dissipata and Cylindrotheca closterium. Other species showing frequent uptake were the coccoid colony-forming cyanobacterium Microcrocis sp., and the filamentous cyanobacterium Phormidium sp.. The results suggest that there is a high potential for DFAA uptake in the microphytobenthic community and that for some growth forms and species this could imply a competitive advantage.  相似文献

Abstract. The ribbon‐shaped salivary glands in Bulla striata were studied with light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Secretion is produced in tubules formed by two types of secretory cells, namely granular mucocytes and vacuolated cells, intercalated with ciliated cells. A central longitudinal duct lined by the same cell types collects the secretion and conducts it to the buccal cavity. In granular mucocytes, the nucleus is usually central and the secretory vesicles contain oval‐shaped granular masses attached to the vesicle membrane. Glycogen granules can be very abundant, filling the space around the secretory vesicles. These cells are strongly stained by PAS reaction for polysaccharides. Their secretory vesicles are also stained by Alcian blue, revealing acidic mucopolysaccharides, and the tetrazonium reaction detects proteins in minute spots at the edge of the vesicles, corresponding to the granular masses observed in TEM. Colloidal iron staining for acidic mucopolysaccharides in TEM reveals iron particles in the electron‐lucent region of the vesicles, while the granular masses are free of particles. In vacuolated cells, which are thinner and less abundant than the granular mucocytes, the nucleus is basal and the cytoplasm contains large electron‐lucent vesicles. These vesicles are very weakly colored by light microscopy techniques, but colloidal iron particles could be observed within them. The golf tee‐shaped ciliated cells contain some electron‐dense lysosomes in the apical region. In these cells, the elongated nucleus is subapically located, and bundles of microfibrils are common in the slender cytoplasmic stalk that reaches the basal lamina. The morphological, histochemical, and cytochemical data showed some similarities between salivary glands in B. striata and Aplysia depilans. These similarities could reflect the phylogenetic relationship between cephalaspidean and anaspidean opisthobranchs or result from a convergent adaptation to an identical herbivorous diet.  相似文献

Thin sections of cartilage from the chondrocranium of cuttle fish and octopus were examined using the transmission electron microscope. It was found that cephalopod chondrocytes differed considerably from the chondrocytes of vertebrate cartilage; in particular they possessed many long and ramifying cytoplasmic processes and had an ultrastructure typical of protein-secreting cells. They did not, however, contain secretory granules; while vesicles and rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae seemed to open directly to the cell surface. The cell body and processes contained cytoskeletal structures: microtubules were easily recognized, but intermediate and thin filaments were difficult to make out as they were frequently clumped into bundles. Some chondrocytes contained conspicuous accumulations of hemocyanin. The cytoplasmic processes possessed intercellular contacts similar to gap junctions. Also present on processes and the cell body were cell-extracellular matrix focal adhesions. The chondrocytes were not polarized or arranged in any preferential spatial order, however, with their processes they formed a three-dimensional network throughout the cartilage tissue. Ultrastructural findings are discussed in relation to the singular morphofunctional characteristics of cephalopod cartilage which shares features with both the cartilage and bone of vertebrates.  相似文献

The spermatozoon of Tornatina sp. has been studied with phase-contrast light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The head of the spermatozoon consists of an elongate acrosome which caps the apex of an unusually complex, helical nucleus. This elaborate nuclear morphology has not been previously reported, but possibly is found in other opisthobranch gastropod spermatozoa. An axoneme is inserted deeply into the base of the nucleus whilst posterior from the nucleus, the axoneme is ensheathed successively by the mitochondrial derivative (midpiece) and 'glycogen' granules (glycogen piece). The midpiece exhibits fine structure similar to that observed in other euthyneuran spermatozoa (paracrystalline and matrix materials) and possesses a single helical compartment filled with what are probably glycogen granules. A dense ring structure occurs at the junction of the midpiece and glycogen piece. The spermatozoon of Tornatina and other gastropods (prosobranch and euthyneuran) are compared.  相似文献

Amblyospora sp. in Culex salinarius (Coquillett) is transovarially transmitted and has 2 developmental sequences, one in each host sex. In females, the entire life cycle is restricted to oenocytes which become greatly hypertrophied due to the multiplication of diplokaryotic cells during merogony and come to lie next to ovaries. Sporulation occurs only after a blood meal is taken and is shortly followed by infection of the oocytes and subsequent transmission to the next host generation. In the male host, infections spread from oenocytes to adipose tissue where diplokaryotic cells undergo a 2nd merogony. During this merogonic cycle, the number of diplokaryotic cells greatly increases and the infection is spread throughout the body of the larval host. Sporulation is initiated with the physical separation of the 2 members of the diplokaryon and the simultaneous secretion of a pansporoblastic membrane. Subsequent meiotic division and morphogenesis result in the formation of 8 haploid spores enclosed with a pansporoblastic membrane. Buildup of spores and subsequent destruction of host adipose tissue prove fatal to the male host during the 4th larval stage.  相似文献

Twenty-one carabid species were used in a laboratory study to determine the effect of beetle size and temperature on the predation of one day old Deroceras reticulatum (Muller) slugs. The beetles were caught in arable land at the study site. None of the five small-sized beetle species killed slugs, whereas five of the seven medium-sized beetle species and eight of the nine large-sized beetle species killed slugs. Four of the most abundant beetle species at the study site were used to assess the effect of temperature on the predation of 1-day-old slugs. There were significant differences in the proportion of beetles predating slugs at the different temperatures. Regression analysis showed that there was a significant increase in the proportion of Pterostichus madidus (Fabricius) and Harpalus rufipes (Degeer) beetles predating slugs as temperature increased. Nebria brevicollis (Fabricius) inflicted its highest level of slug mortality at 8°C and its larvae were the only predators to significantly increase slug mortality at 4°C, the lowest experimental temperature. Harpalus aeneus (Fabricius) inflicted significant levels of slug mortality at 20°C, the highest experimental temperature. It appeared that the predatory activity of these beetle species at the five experimental temperatures reflected their annual activity periods in the field.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of mature spermatozoa is investigated for the first time in the Volutidae, based on the commercially significant South American species Zidona dufresnei (Donovan, 1823) (fresh material) and supplemented with observations on testicular (museum) material of the deep sea New Zealand species Provocator mirabilis (Finlay, 1926). Euspermatozoa of Z. dufresnei (ex sperm duct) consist of: (1) a tall-conical acrosomal vesicle (with short basal invagination, constricted anteriorly) which is flattened anteriorly and associated with an axial rod, centrally perforate basal plate and short accessory membrane; (2) a rod-shaped, solid and highly electron-dense nucleus (with short basal fossa containing centriolar complex and initial portion of a 9 + 2 axoneme); (3) an elongate midpiece consisting of the axoneme sheathed by 5–6 helical mitochondrial elements, each exhibiting a dense U-shaped outer layer; (4) an elongate glycogen piece (axoneme sheathed by nine tracts of putative glycogen granules); (5) a dense annulus at the junction of the midpiece and glycogen piece and (6) a short free tail region (axoneme surrounded only by plasma membrane). Paraspermatozoa of Z. dufresnei are vermiform and dimorphic: the first type contains approximately 14–20 axonemes (arranged peripherally and interspersed with microtubules) and numerous oblong dense vesicles, numerous less dense (round) vesicles, occasional, large lipid-like vesicles, and scattered mitochondria; the second type contains 25–31 axonemes (peripherally arranged, interspersed with microtubules), occasional mitochondria and extensive cytoplasm. Results obtained for P. mirabilis from testis material are essentially as observed in Z. dufresnei, although the euspermatozoan acrosome still has to achieve its compressed transverse profile. Observations on paraspermatozoa were limited by fixation quality of available (testis) tissues, but these cells are similar to the first type of Zidona paraspermatozoa. Although most of the euspermatozoal features are also observed in many neotaenioglossans and neogastropods, the U-shaped outer layer of each mitochondrial element has not previously been reported and may prove a diagnostic feature of the Volutidae, the subfamily Zidoniinae or possibly only the Zidonini (in which Z. dufresnei and P. mirabilis are currently placed).  相似文献

Summary The eye of the deep-sea penaeid shrimp Gennadas consists of approximately 700 square ommatidia with a side length of 15 n. It is hemispherical in shape and is located at the end of a 1.5 mm long eye stalk. The cornea is extremely thin, but the crystalline cone is well-developed. A clear zone between dioptric structures and the rhabdom layer is absent. A few pigment granules are found within the basement membrane; otherwise they, too, are absent from the eye of Gennadas. The rhabdom is massive and occupies 50 % of the eye. It consists of orthogonally oriented microvilli (the latter measuring 0.07 m in diameter) and is 75 m long. In cross sections adjacent rhabdoms, all approximately 8 m in diameter, form an almost continuous sheet and leave little space for retinula cell cytoplasm. In spite of a one h exposure to light, rhabdom microvilli show no disintegration or disruption of membranes. Vesicles of various kinds, however, are present in all seven retinula cells near the basement membrane. Bundles of seven axons penetrate the basement membrane. On their way to the lamina they often combine and form larger aggregations. The authors wish to thank the director of the Meat Industry Research Institute in Hamilton and his staff for the use of their electron microscope facilities  相似文献
