We examined whether body size affects the swarming behavior and mating success of male Anopheles freeborninear California rice fields. Swarms formed after dusk and persisted for approximately 30 min. The proportion of males in 33 swarms sampled n=6028 ranged from 100 to 92% but decreased over time (r=0.73, t=6.03, P<0.001).On average, swarming males (n=1058) were larger than males sampled from the resting population (n=735, H=35.6, P<0.0001),indicating that some males never swarm at all. Males swarming early were significantly smaller than those swarming during the peak (H=6.71, P=0.009)or final minutes of the swarm (H=4.86, P=0.002). Mated males returned to the swarm after mating, and larger males enjoyed greater mating success than did smaller ones (n=398, H=16.1, P=0.0005).  相似文献

Reciprocal crosses were made between an Indian strain of D. n. nasuta (2n=8) and the Thailand strain of D. n. albomicana (2n=6). Hybrids were fertile. They were inbred for over four years. Later, the karyotypes of the hybrid populations were analysed. In the hybrid progeny of the cross between D. n. nasuta females and D. n. albomicana males, there were six types of kaotypes. Of these, only two types had a diploid content of chromosomes. They were males with 2n=7 and females with 2n= 8 , while others were aneuploids. This hybrid population is designated as Cytorace III. On the other hand, hybrid progeny of the reciprocal cross had 2n-8 in both males and females; and there was no karyotypic variation. This hybrid population is named as Cytorace IV. The composition of these new karyotypes of Cytorace III and IV have been presented and compared with those of Cytorace I and II reported by Ramachandra and Ranganath (1986).  相似文献

Most primates are characterized by cohesive male–female bonds that are maintained year round. While recent studies have addressed the selective pressures influencing the evolution of male–female relationships in primates, we know relatively little about the proximate mechanisms affecting them. It has been demonstrated that newborn white‐faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) attract the attention of other group members and this may be an important mechanism influencing male–female relationships. We studied two groups of C. capucinus in the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica, between February and July 2007. A total of 348 hr of focal data were collected on all adult males (n=6) residing in each of the study groups. During our study, 13 of the 14 group females were either pregnant or lactating, and 9 infants were born. We calculated an average daily affiliation rate between all group males combined and each adult female four weeks before and four weeks after the birth of her infant. Repeated measures ANOVAs revealed no significant changes in affiliation following infant births (F=2.262, df=1, P<0.176). Results remained nonsignificant for rank (F=1.550, df=1, P<0.260) and group membership (F=0.729, df=1, P<0.429). Infant sex was the only variable with a significant effect on affiliation rates between males and females (F=10.020, df=1, P<0.019). Adult males increased their affiliation with all adult females that gave birth to male infants (n=4), while their rates decreased with all but one of the adult females with female infants (n=4). While preliminary, these results indicate that the adult males may cultivate relationships with other males at a young age. Am. J. Primatol. 71:380–383, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

While pheromone communication has been well documented in the female round goby, male responses have not been examined. We determined if male round gobies responded to odours of their conspecifics, and whether that response varied with their reproductive status (reproductive and non-reproductive). No significant differences were observed for any treatment (dechlorinated water, or water conditioned by reproductive males (RM) and non-reproductive males (NRM) and females), although RM spent more time inside shelter than NRM (p < 0.05). Morphologically, length and weight did not vary, but gonadosomatic index, seminal vesicle somatic index and relative head width did differ between the two male groups (p = 0.000). Round goby males guard nests in cavities, and so a preference for shelter with increasing reproductive status is expected. Also, a lack of male responses to conspecific odours may be adaptive in this species, since males nest together in high densities, where increased aggression might prove detrimental for nesting males.  相似文献

We studied survival of elk (Cervus elaphus) ≥1 yr old and quantified mortality sources in the Blue Mountains of Washington, 2003–2006, following a period of extensive poaching. The population was managed under a spike-only general hunting season, with limited permits for larger males and for females. We radiomarked 190 elk (82 males and 39 females >1 yr old and 65 males 11 months old), most with rumen transmitters and neck radiocollars; 60 elk only received rumen transmitters. We estimated annual survival using known fate models and explored survival differences among sex and age classes and in 2 potentially different vulnerability zones for males. We found little support for differences in survival between younger (2–3-yr old) and older (≥4-yr old) branch-antlered males or zone differences for yearling males. A model with zone differences for branch-antlered males was the second ranked model and accounted for 14% of the available model weight. From the best-supported models, we estimated annual survival for yearling males at 0.41 (95% CI: 0.29–0.53). We estimated pooled adult female survival at 0.80 (95% CI: 0.64–0.93); when an age-class effect was included, point estimates were higher for prime-aged females (2–11 yr: S = 0.81 [0.70–0.88]) than for older females (≥12 yr: S = 0.72 [0.56–0.83]), but confidence intervals broadly overlapped. Only 1 of 7 models with a female age effect on survival was among the competitive models. For branch-antlered males, survival ranged 0.80–0.85, depending on whether zone variation was modeled. We recorded 78 deaths of radiomarked elk. Human-caused deaths (n = 55) predominated among causes and most were of yearling males killed during state-sanctioned hunts (n = 28). Most subadult male deaths were from tribal hunting (n = 5), and most mature males died from natural causes (n = 6) and tribal hunting (n = 5). We detected few illegal kills (n = 4). Our results suggest that increased enforcement effectively reduced poaching, that unreported tribal harvest was not a trivial source of mortality, and that spike-only general seasons were effective in recruiting branch-antlered males. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Among insects, males have evolved the ability to discriminate potential mates to avoid vain mating attempts. In Diptera, courtship and mating behaviors of species that do not discriminate potential mates have rarely been studied. In this study, we investigated copulation attempts of the stalk-eyed fly, Sphyracephala detrahens males, which do not engage in any observable pre-copulatory courtship behavior. We found that sexually mature males attempted to copulate with mature males and immature adults of both sexes, as frequently as with mature females. Successful copulation only occurred with mature females. Immature females rejected mounting males by vibrating their bodies and immature and mature males by incurving their abdomen downward. Comparison of the cuticular hydrocarbon components of individuals of different sexes and maturity levels indicated that the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles were similar regardless of the sex and sexual maturity. Therefore, we suggest that visual or chemical information are of little use for males S. detrahens in discriminating receptive conspecific mates. Since elaborate mate discrimination behaviors lead to additional time and energy costs when discrimination is difficult, S. detrahens may increase reproductive success simply by increasing the number of copulation attempts. Age, growth and mortality were analysed for the common two‐banded seabream, Diplodus vulgaris, collected in the eastern Adriatic (Croatian coast) from commercial fishery catches by ‘tramata’ fishing (2005–2006) to obtain growth estimation. The oldest female was estimated to be age 11, the oldest male age 10 years. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated by reading scales were: L = 48.60 cm (SE = 1.101), K = 0.112 (SE = 0.005) and t0 = ?2.366 (SE = 0.060) for all specimens; L = 51.96 cm (SE = 2.153), K = 0.095 (SE = 0.007) and t0 = ?2.837 (SE = 0.120) for females and L = 56.25 cm (SE = 2.662), K = 0.084 (SE = 0.067) and t0 = ?2.920 (SE = 0.117) for males. The overall sex ratio was 1.22 : 1 in favour of males. Total mortality, corresponding to the slope of the descending limb of the catch curve, was Z = 0.81 per year for females and Z = 0.85 per year for males. Exploitation ratios were E = 0.68 for females and E = 0.73 for males.  相似文献

Intraspecific agonism is a problem in fish culture. This has corresponding fish welfare implications. As the design of the holding container may moderate aggressive behaviour, the aim of this study was to reduce agonistic behaviour by altering tank dimensions without changing the available volume. The study used swordtails, a popular aquarium species in which dominance hierarchies between males are common. The frequency of attacks initiated by dominant males against subordinate males was significantly reduced in tanks with smaller surface area (t(12) = ?3.849, P = 0.002) while the frequency of mating displays, assumed to be a measure of normal behaviour, remained unchanged (t(12) = 1.126, P = 0.282). The time that subordinate males spent feeding was also unaffected (t(12) = ?0.081, P = 0.937) while dominant males reduced the time spent feeding in tanks with smaller surface area (t(12) = ?3.468, P = 0.005). However, this is unlikely to be detrimental to the health of dominant males but may reflect a decreased food requirement through reduced energy expenditure. Alteration of tank dimensions in this way is therefore a simple means for small‐scale facilities and pet stores to reduce agonistic behaviour in swordtails.  相似文献

The age and growth of sand smelt, Atherina boyeri (Risso 1810), in the Mar Menor (SE Iberian Peninsula) were studied in samples taken from catches of local fishermen obtained between November 1997 and September 1998. The maximum lengths were 94 mm (FL, fork length) in females and 87 mm (FL) in males. Age determination based on scale readings and validated by length frequency analysis shows that the population has a 3‐year life cycle. Females were significantly longer than males in each of the age classes. Both sexes of the sand smelt grow allometrically (b = 3.113 males; b = 3.043 females) and attain approximately 56.2% of their maximum fork length in their immature first year, after which the annual growth rate drops quickly. The highest growth rate was observed from winter to spring (GL = 16.01 males 1+; GL = 11.25 males 2+; GL = 17.18 females 1+; GL = 9.62 females 2+). The condition cycles were similar for both sexes, with a minimum in June–July and two maximums in April and November.  相似文献

Three main hypotheses can explain the origin of the sexual size dimorphism: (1) the birth-size hypothesis, which states that birth size of males is larger than that of females; (2) the growth-rate hypothesis, which states that males grow faster than females; (3) the growth-length hypothesis, which states that males grow for a longer period of time than females. We examined the factors that may contribute to sexual size dimorphism with growth data of striped skunks Mephitis mephitis Schreber, 1776 held in captivity in Manitoba (Canada), from 7 to 72 days of age. At seven days of age, the mass of male skunks (mean = 79.7 g ± 13.9 SE, n = 37) was significantly larger than that of females (mean = 71.2 g ± 15.0 SE, n = 35) but the head and body length was not statistically different between males (mean = 110.3 mm ± 8.0 SE, n = 37) and females (mean = 95.3 mm ± 7.4 SE, n = 35). There was no difference in growth rate for mass or for length between sexes. We were not able to test for a difference in growth length between sexes. Our results suggest that mass dimorphism occurs early in life.  相似文献

Indonesia has the greatest reported chondrichthyan catches worldwide, with c.110,000 t caught annually. The pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus) and scalloped hammerhead (Sphryna lewini) together comprise about 25% of the total catches of sharks landed in Indonesia. Age and growth parameters were estimated for A. pelagicus and S. lewini from growth‐band counts of thin‐cut vertebral sections. Alopias pelagicus (n = 158) and S. lewini (n = 157) vertebrae were collected from three Indonesian fish markets over a 5 year period. A multi‐model analysis was used to estimate growth parameters for both species. The models of best fit for males and females for A. pelagicus was the three‐parameter logistic (L = 3169 mm LT, k = 0·2) and the two‐parameter von Bertalanffy models (L = 3281 mm LT, k = 0·12). Age at maturity was calculated to be 10·4 and 13·2 years for males and females, respectively, and these are the oldest estimated for this species. The samples of S. lewini were heavily biased towards females, and the model of best fit for males and females was the three‐parameter Gompertz (L = 2598 mm LT, k = 0·15) and the two‐parameter Gompertz (L = 2896 mm LT, k= 0·16). Age at maturity was calculated to be 8·9 and 13·2 years for males and females, respectively. Although numerous age and growth studies have previously been undertaken on S. lewini, few studies have been able to obtain adequate samples from all components of the population because adult females, adult males and juveniles often reside in different areas. For the first time, sex bias in this study was towards sexually mature females, which are commonly lacking in previous biological studies on S. lewini. Additionally, some of the oldest aged specimens and highest age at maturity for both species were observed in this study. Both species exhibit slow rates of growth and late age at maturity, highlighting the need for a re‐assessment of the relative resilience of these two globally threatened sharks at current high levels of fishing mortality throughout the eastern Indian Ocean.  相似文献

The inheritance of adiposity and related traits has been investigated in the obese, diabetes-prone KK/HlLt (KK) and the lean, normoglycemic C57BL/6J (B6) mouse strains, their F1 hybrids, and a large intercross generation. Adiposity index (AI) was defined as the sum of four fat depot weights divided by body weight. Both male and female KK mice were obese, but AI values averaged twofold higher in females than in males. In contrast, B6 females were slightly more lean than males. A genome-wide search revealed several qualitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting AI. The proximal region of Chromosome (Chr) 9 has a large effect on AI, with a much stronger effect in females (lod = 6.3) than in males (lod = 2.7). The data for females fit a model in which a dominant allele from KK increases AI by 30%, with the lod score peak falling between markers D9Mit66 and D9Mit328. This QTL has large effects on inguinal and mesenteric fat pad weights, with smaller effects on gonadal and retroperitoneal fat pads. The region of Chr 9 containing this QTL has extensive homology to human Chr 11q. An X-linked QTL affecting AI was evident in males (lod = 3.77), but not females (lod = 0.7). Exclusion of mesenteric fat from male AI resulted in an increased lod score (lod = 5.0) at 8 cM distal to DXMit166. A suggestive AI QTL (lod = 4.2), differentially affecting males, was localized to Chr 18 near the glucocorticoid receptor locus. A region of Chr 7 had a strong effect on body weight (lod = 6.9), a significant effect on inguinal fat% (lod = 4.4), and a suggestive effect on AI in females (lod = 4.1). Plasma leptin levels were associated with genotypes on Chr 9 (lod = 5.9) and Chr 7 (lod = 4.2). A region of Chr 1 had a suggestive effect on fasted blood glucose (lod = 3.6). Aggressive signals should predict whether the sender of the signal will attack the receiver, yet this criterion has been little studied. We conducted experiments with male House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) in north‐central Illinois in 2009 to test the hypothesis that rates of song delivery and wing‐quivering (putative aggressive signals) signal aggressive intent. We simulated a conspecific territorial intrusion by combining playback of male song with a male taxidermic mount, predicting that these signals would be related to a male's likelihood of attacking a conspecific. All males (N = 37) sang in response to the intrusion. Males attacking the mount sang at significantly higher rates and performed significantly more wing quivers than males that did not attack. In addition, all males that attacked the mount performed wing quivers (9/9), whereas only 53.6% (15/28) of males that did not attack did so (P = 0.011). Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that both song and wing quivering indicate a signaler's aggressive intent and that these signals are likely components of a multi‐component, hierarchical display.  相似文献

Bi‐directional sex change has recently been reported in a range of reef fishes, including haremic species that were earlier thought to be protogynous (female to male). However, the occurrence of this phenomenon and the social conditions driving the reversion of males to females (reversed sex change) have been poorly documented under natural conditions. Reversed sex change is predicted to occur in low‐density populations where facultative monogamy is common. However, few studies have evaluated this over a long period in such populations. We documented the occurrence of bi‐directional sex change during a 3‐yr demographic survey of a population characterised by small harem sizes in haremic hawkfish Cirrhitichthys falco. New males were derived following a change in sex of functional females (secondary males; n = 3) and juveniles always matured first as females (n = 3). Thus, C. falco exhibited a typical protogynous sexual pattern, consistent with a range of haremic fish species. We observed reversed sex change in two males. In both cases, all the females disappeared from their harems and the neighbouring males expanded their territories to encompass the territories of the sex changers. However, bachelor males did not always revert to females. A dominant male experienced bachelor status twice but regained mating opportunities following the immigration of a female into his territory or by taking a female from a neighbouring harem. Thus, we conclude that bachelor males use reversed sex change as a facultative tactic to regain reproductive status in a haremic mating system. In addition, we discuss the influence of harem size upon occurrence of reversed sex change.  相似文献

Growth parameters in pikeperch may be affected by several factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth and length–weight of pikeperch in a reservoir in south‐western Spain and compare the results with previous published data. Age and growth are described for Sander lucioperca from the Alcántara Reservoir (south‐western Spain) from March to October 2009. A total of 285 fish were examined; the ratio of males to females was estimated as 0.78:1 and age ranges as 1–5 years. Total lengths ranged from 16.1 to 52.5 cm. The length–weight relationships were described as W = 0.00 462 TL3.09 (r = 0.9865) for males and W = 0.00279 TL3.16 (r = 0.9921) for females. Growth was expressed in length and the von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated as L∞ = 92.14 cm, k = 0.09, t0 = ?1.05 for males and L∞ = 107.72 cm, k = 0.08, t0 = ?1.16 for females. Growth performance indexes were also estimated as Φ’ = 2.88 for males and Φ’ = 2.96 for females. Differences in growth and length–weight relationships between sexes were not found.  相似文献

The authors report and explain female-biased sex ratios in the neotropical treehopper Umbonia ataliba Homoptera: Membracidae at Monteverde, Costa Rica. Umbonia ataliba mothers semelparously oviposit egg masses into host-plant branches, make feeding holes, and guard the eggs and the nymphs until the young moult to become adults. At adulthood, offspring sex ratios are female-biased, with families having, on average, one male per 3.17 females (SD = 0.149, n = 48). The female bias does not appear to be explained by the hypothesis that males are more difficult to raise to independence: males are smaller than females, males have a shorter development time, males do not require disproportionately more feeding holes, and males do not experience higher mortality in families that are unprotected from parasites and predators, rather, females die more often in protected families. Thus females, not males, may be more difficult to raise to independence. The authors investigated whether increases in the size of males and females increased the fitness of either sex disproportionately, but found no relationship between size and fitness for either sex. We found evidence that local-mate competition conditions and inbreeding occur. Mating occurs at the natal site and nearly all copulations take place between siblings (99.3 %, n = 153 copulations). Most females (mean proportion of females = 0.65, SD = 0.33, n = 7 families) copulate with their male siblings prior to dispersing; whether the unmated proportion copulates later is unknown. This paper suggests that the numerical bias reflects an investment bias favoured under selection by inbreeding and local-mate competition conditions.  相似文献

Growth and reproduction of Chelidonichthys lucerna is reported from Tunisian waters. A total of 286 specimens was collected from landings of bottom trawlers between January 2003 and November 2004. The total length ranged from 16 to 36 cm in females and from 17 to 26 cm in males. Marginal increment analysis of otoliths showed that the translucent zone was laid from October to May and the opaque zone laid from June to September. Females were from 0.5 to 9 years and males from 1 to 7 years old. Growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function were TL = 40.26; K = 0.06 and t0 = ?3.03 in females and TL = 46.16; K = 0.059 and t0 = ?1.32 in males. The coefficient of the allometric length–weight relationships differed significantly by sex. Females with mature gonads were observed between October and May, with peaks in January and February. Length at which 50% of specimens were mature was 21.6 cm TL (estimated age about 3 years) in females and 19.2 cm TL (estimated age about 1.5 years) in males.  相似文献

Age, growth and reproductive characteristics of creole perch, Percichthys trucha, were investigated in the Negro River, southern Argentina from samples collected seasonally, December 1994–December 1995. Age was estimated via scale and whole otolith reading methods. Total length (n = 413) ranged from 103 to 432 mm, and weight from 12 to 1042 g. Significant differences between the length‐weight relationships of males and females were detected (P < 0.05). Isometric growth was observed in juveniles and males, whereas total population and females exhibited positive allometric growth. The marking pattern in scales and otoliths followed an annual rhythm, with the formation of only one annulus in scales and only one hyaline band in otoliths during autumn‐winter. The oldest males were 5 years old whereas maximum age in females was 12 years from scales and 15 years from otoliths. Because scales were found to underestimate age in individuals older than 4 years, otoliths were considered to be the best structures for creole perch age determination. Gompertz growth parameters based on otolith data were L∞: 428.0 mm, k = 0.46 and t0 = 0.43 for total population (r = 0.90), L∞: 410.7 mm, k = 0.42 and t0 = 0.46 for males (r = 0.91), and L∞: 434.1 mm, and k = 0.49 and t0 = 0.43 for females (r = 0.91). Lengths at first maturity (TL50) were 260 and 241 mm in males and females, respectively, both of which corresponded to ages between 1 and 2 years. Macroscopic gonad inspection and the high percentage of juveniles captured during summer indicated that spawning begins at the end of spring.  相似文献

Karyotypes are described for the three species of ground crickets belonging to the North American genusEunemobius. All species possess three pairs of metacentric autosomes and a submetacentric X-chromosome. The sex-determination mechanism is XX-XO with 2n=7 in males and 2n=8 in females. There is no evidence that chromosomal rearrangements have been involved in speciation in the group.  相似文献

Age, growth and mortality were analysed for red bandfish, Cepola macrophthalma, collected in the eastern Adriatic from May 2002 to June 2003. The oldest male was estimated to be age 4, the oldest female age 3. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation are: L = 55.0 cm (SE = 0.1), K = 0.445 (SE = 0.074) and t0 = ?0.1 (SE = 0.001) for males, and L = 48.9 cm (SE = 0.167), K = 0.395 (SE = 0.062) and t0 = ?0.009 (SE = 0.02) for females. The overall sex ratio was 1.42 : 1 in favour of males. Total mortality, corresponding to the slope of the descending limb of the catch curve, was Z = 1.20 per year for females and Z = 1.23 per year for males. Exploitation ratios were E = 0.479 for females and E = 0.433 for males.  相似文献
